White House: Some ‘crazy’ liberal critics of Obama ‘ought to be drug tested’

The White House is sparing no punches to some of its critics on the “professional left,” describing them as insatiable and unrealistic.

In an interview with Sam Youngman of The Hill published Tuesday morning, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs unleashed a series of forceful attacks on some unnamed progressive critics of President Barack Obama.

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

The paper described the president’s spokesman as “simmering with anger” and “in furious disbelief” over some of Obama’s liberal detractors, from whom he has faced regular criticism for not pushing a progressive agenda more authoritatively.

“They will be satisfied when we have Canadian health care and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon,” Gibbs retorted. “That’s not reality.”

One topic of liberal dissent was the administration’s handling of health care reform, which the Democratic base was underwhelmed by. Gibbs mocked and dismissed them.

“They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president,” he said.

Gibbs clarified that the “professional left” is not representative of the progressives “in America” and outside Washington, who organized and mobilized in favor of Obama.

The tone of Gibbs’ interview signals brewing frustration in the White House over parts of its base as midterm elections approach. It might hearken back to when White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel privately and pointedly described some liberals as “fucking retarded.”

“I understand why the [White House] is frustrated by liberal dissatisfaction, but not why they complain about it in interviews,” said Ezra Klein of the Washington Post on Twitter.

“Maybe one day Robert Gibbs can gear himself up to express some anger at the Right, too,” tweeted Salon’s Glenn Greenwald, one of the president’s most consistent critics from the left.

If the WH hadn’t been so busy selling us out on healthcare reform while saying that they supported the public option, I might feel differently.

My daughter’s business just closed, a close friend’s business is in bankruptcy, another close friend is in foreclosure, and the President wants ME drug tested. But, thankfully, the banks are still gambling with tax money and paying the CEOs and managers big bonuses. … and the President wants ME drug tested. I voting for the GREEN Party for the rest of my life.

  • http://bleh ObamaSupporter

Well that was smart. Insult your base. I mean I am still an Obama supporter because I agree the alternatives are not realistic, but calling your constituents “retarded” is about the dumbest thing you can do. In any case, I would argue HIS expectations are unrealistic. Consider, who do you know in real life that you can please 100% of time? Answer- unless you are a cult leader, no one. People never, ever agree with each other 100%. That’s just the facts of life. But a smart politician doesn’t insult his base for thinking this. If you get frustrated, use that as more anger against the Right.

UNBELIEVABLE! Under siege by conservatives from all sides and he attacks his ALLIES?????

How about we vote for some Tea Party racists? Would that make you happier Gibbs???? What an ASSHOLE!

It was Obama himself who said the president cant do anything unless the public makes him through political pressure.

So “racist” “commie”"socialist” none of that gets them angry, but call them corporatists and whew, the wrath of god comes down on you? Little sensitive think?

As a liberal who generally likes Obama, gives him credit when it’s due, and is occasionally disappointed by his unwillingness to fight harder, I find Gibbs’s comments idiotic, impolitic and offensive.

If only the Obama folks would turn their ire more fiercely at their conservative critics, instead of at their own base of support….

    Gibbs should apologize, or resign.

Why would Obama’s admin say something so stupid, so idiotic, so ridiculous. Obama needs to issue an apology. Does he not know that these are the people who got him elected in the first place?

“I voting (sic) for the GREEN Party for the rest of my life.” Oh I get it: you’re angry that your daughter’s business just closed, so you’re going throw your vote away on a party that can’t elect anyone to anything. People like you are going to allow the Retardlicans to take over both houses in November. God, you’re fucking retarded. Have fun licking Ralph Nader’s pompous ass for the rest of your life…

Well, frankly, it was a bit dismaying when they pulled the climate change bill, in a year of record heat, melting sea ice, and absolutely terrifying evidence of what all that portends. If the dems don’t get the importance of that, perhaps we need to elect a party that does, like the Greens, which can work with related parties around the world to pull us quite literally out of the fire.

To be sure, it would help if the GOP retreated to its KKK core and never came back, because we do have to get on with it. But that won’t happen so long as it looks like the dems and GOP are our only choices. The dems should be the only right wing party because at least they admit common facts. Let the Greens be the left.

We needed real solutions out of Obama. We needed something to blast a hole in the hull of the insurance industry, not something to patch it up. We needed peace, not obsessive war.

I do believe he’s doing some things, especially on the education front, and I do appreciate how hard his job is, but compared with what is needed, it’s tantamount to a betrayal of the public trust, however much better he is than his predecessors. America is like a woman who has dated a series of abusers, and finally finds someone who seems really nice, but he turns out to be like all the rest when it comes down to it.

Cutting the military budget though — that might go an awful long way in the right direction. Slash the military budget, make peace, get us a measly medicare buy in, do something meaningful about climate change — we might start to breathe easy again.

Actually, Robert, I would have been satisified had Dennis Kucinich been elected in 2008. If he were to primary the president, given the nutbag that the GOP will rally behind thanks to the Tea-per Tantrum crowd, I think Kucinich in 2012 would be a real possibility. So you just keep tap dancing on that land mine, Gibbs.

I feel bad for those who wasted their votes on this undeserving bunch. I don’t believe it’s possible to elect anyone who is not right (democrats) or far right (republicans). The rise of the right in the US follows the general decline of democratic standards for the past 30 or 40 years.

  • http://www.ameridane.org thingwarbler

Don’t hold your breath. The only time Obama will even bother addressing progressives is when it comes time to beg for money to get re-elected. Be sure to take that opportunity to tell him what you think of his Hope, Change & Arrogance…

Bobby Gibbs pitches one beauty of a foot-stomping hissy fit. Poor poor pouty Bobby.

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

No Bobby boy, the Obama isn’t “like George Bush”, the Obama is simply the evolutionary face of Washington politics. Not much changes.
Here’s what’s crazy Bobby boy, war in Afghaniscam. The Obama’s refusal to prosecute the Bushco war criminals. The non-closing of Guantanamo. Wall Street bailouts. Healthcare reform that isn’t reform after all is said and legislated.
Pitch that funky fit Gibbs-o-matic and before you know it, November 2012 will be here and then all the world can see who needs to be drug tested.

  • Michael Davis

Yeah, this liberal would have been happier if Kucinich had won, that’s why I campaigned for him. We’re just hoping he decides to run again.

Canadian style health care and reduction (not elimination) of the Defense (more aptly Offense) industries are “not reality”? Whose reality? The Corporate interests that own most politicians have defined our “reality” to the detriment of all except the ones at the top of the food chain. It’s becoming obvious to many of us that these people don’t live in “reality” that most citizens do. That has to change.

  • Anonymous

This is what happens when the people in power think there are no realistic alternatives to their perceived entitlement to power. This “who else are they going to vote for?” attitude is arrogant and self destructive.

I’m not giving any more money to the Democratic party, nor to any Democratic candidates who do not show some backbone and integrity. I’m hanging up on their damn robo calls begging for donations.

And in my most recent fit of frustration, I changed my voter registration from “Democrat” to “unaffiliated.” I refuse to be pissed on again by those who want my vote.

What Gibbs is saying: we can’t promote a progressive agenda. If we try, Corporate Power will crush us. We have to settle for window dressing, and make it look like we’re bucking the tide. Why can’t you progressives understand that we are not as strong as you think? Why can’t you understand that we ALL are subjects to Corporate Power, that not only rules the US, but also rules the world?

  • Anonymous

How dare any of you hippie freaks criticize the obama corporation. Bush had no child left behind, obama will have no corporation left behind.

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said.

    1) continuing to wiretap citizens without warrant
    2) virtually strip searching teenage daughters and sons at airports by leering rent-a-cops
    3) continuing renditions and secret hit squads
    4) continuing torture
    5) still in Iraq, will be “down” to 50,000 troops — the population of my county seat
    6) never repealed Bush tax cuts for the wealthy which demonstrably did nothing for job creation
    7) mandate to buy from health insurance robber barons with no public option
    8) a banking “reform” bill only Tim Geithner and his predecessor Henry Paulson could love
    9) lifting offshore oil drilling ban before climate change negotiations even start
    10) after BP disaster, opening up hundreds of thousands of acres of pristine Alaskan wilderness, mouthing the industry lie that oil drilled here is “our” oil while we export millions of barrels every day
    11) capitulating on every key point of every important piece of legislation to get Republican votes, only to get none, and never going back and rescinding the capitulations
    12) continually poking a stick in the eye of the people who put his sorry ass in office

That’s my dozen reasons, there, asswipe. Not bad for a dope addict, huh? Just think how many I’ll have once I go to rehab, you piece of shit.

I didn’t include Afghanistan because that utter folly is yours alone — at least Bush had the sense to stay out of that rat hole.

Gibbs, if there’s anybody on dope, its you rat bastards if you think you’ll be reelected in 2012 by alienating your base. Go tell stooge Rahm Emanuel we pajama wearing retards are getting pretty sick of you corporate fellating weenies.

Fuck you and the hope you rode in on. If you don’t shape the hell up, and pronto, you’ll ride out on a fucking rail, you sonofabitch.

“They will be satisfied when we have Canadian health care and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon,” Gibbs retored. “That’s not reality.”

Or just having Obama at least back a public option like he said he would, instead of killing it before negotiations began in a backroom deal with insurance companies. Or ending the occupation in Iraq like he said he would, instead of keeping it in place indefinitely. Or working to get us out of Afghanistan like he said he would, instead of escalating.

But yeah, we’re just splitting hairs I guess, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!

I have said before, many times now, that I am a McKinney supporter. I’ve forgot since when exactly, but it was long before the 2008 elections. So…Why do you pretend you are telling any of us something new? The difference between us and you is: we don’t hate him because he’s black, we hate him because he’s behaving exactly like Bush. And Gibbs knows we’re on to the right vs extreme right paradigm now.

Instead of attempting to make critics into criminals, we ought be testing all the officials by comparing their history and actions to that of the OATH they took. We ought to be investigating our officials to find out if they are affiliated or influenced by foreign agents like aipac, cfr, tc, bilderberg, rothchild, or giant corporations. There’s no need to eliminate the pentagon, but it sure needs a security clearance audit to get rid of oath breakers who have foreign interests and unconstitutional agenda planned for AMERICANS.

If Democrats want my vote, they have to earn it. I don’t see enough difference to reward them for stabbing me in the back.

Until Dems get that message loud and clear, you are fucking-aye right that they not only could — they should — lose both houses in November. They need to fear the wrath of the elecorate, not the namby-pamby “poor me I have no alternative” bullshit that propels them to do the bidding of the corporations in full knowledge they’ll never be held accountable.

When they took control of Congress in 2006 they whined they didn’t have enough votes. Pelosi took impeachment off the table, like it was her table to begin with. Still, we listened to you types and rewarded them in 2008 for making all those excuses.

When we gave them everything they wanted — super majorities in both Houses and the White House — what did they do? They ceded power to Republicans in equal measure at the committee level, they offered up key negotiating points before the discussion was even joined, they continued and escalated wars, they failed to repeal tax cuts for the wealthy, they gave away the store to the health insurance companies and banks, they continued torture, rendition, illegal wiretapping, and indefinite detention without due process, and every time they can’t get anything done it’s the Republicans’ fault when we know damn well it’s that Harry Reid won’t whip his own Seantors into line because he’s a useless, feckless, corporatist fool.

Now since Massachusetts said they had enough of this bullshit and elected a Republican, now the excuses flow like water — oh, dear! We need sixty votes! Just the cover they needed! That’s just an excuse for doing the bidding of the same special interests that control both parties.

If you want to labor under the illusion that not holding Democrats accountable is going to get the job done, well, you’re enabling the alcoholic as far as I’m concerned. I’ll do no such thing, and I want the highest levels of the White House, particularly this drug-addled sonofabitch Gibbs, to fear for their jobs for what they’ve done to we the people who put them there.

As my mama used to say, “I brought you into this world, and if you don’t straighten up I’ll take you out, too.”

A Clinton administration would look like the last one without the dot-com bubble to ride to a wave of approval. Mister Magoo could have presided over that span of time succesfully.

Let’s recap: NAFTA and repeal of Glass-Stegall. Enuf said.

What untold damage might a former board member of Wal-Mart in a pants suit have excised from the middle class? We’ll never know, thank the invisible sky daddy.

Don’t forget, it is in large measure due to corporate Clintonista Third Wayer Rahm Emanuel that Obama is failing so miserably.

The Third Way of course was Terry Macauliffe’s initiative to solicit corporate bribes like a Republican while running as a Democrat, and is still manifest in this administration and pervades the Democratic Party like a cancer.

    Hmm.

Huge numbers of illegal drone strikes in Pakistan, condoning the covert, extra-judicial murder of an American citizen abroad, quietly dropping or ignoring withdrawal timelines, fighting the Supreme Court rulings demanding due process for detainees at Guantanamo Bay-but secreting them to one of our other lovely black sites, expanding the reach of government surveillance, allowing the BP disaster to be handled and “investigated” by BP, championing a POS foreclosure relief bill that hurts struggling homeowners while squeezing out a few more pennies for the banks, surrounding oneself with financial advisors fresh from the financial industry and finance-friendly academia…that’s all that I have off the top of my head.

So, no, it’s not just health care, or the war, or any one other issue. And no, Obama isn’t Bush. But the inescapable fact is that Obama has continued or strengthened some of the most repugnant policies of the Bush administration, and he needs to be called on it every time.

    Agreed.

If the Left is unable to discern the difference between Obama and Bush, they need to be schooled. Yes, Obama is perpetuation SOME of Bush’s policies. But he inherited the biggest disaster, caused by Shrub, in several generations. Obama can’t pull this behemoth called the US to the Left in just 2 years time or pull us off the sandbar as quickly as the Far Left would like. I would point out to the Left that there is this Party called the GOP that has been as obstructionist as possible from the second Obama took office. THEY are your enemy. THEY are the cause of the continued problems. The RIGHT owns the meme and they OWN the largest propaganda mouthpieces in America: Rush and Fox.

I am not the “professional” Left, I am not “Fucking Retarded”, I just passed a drug test and now due to the continued Anti-Left rhetoric I will NEVER vote, or help any Democrat who doesn’t stand up against the Corporatist Obama administration and speak out for the progressive movement!

Clawing back 10% of the damage done by 30 years of Reaganomics does NOT count as a victory! Would Obama have said “it was an honor just to be nominated” had he lost the election?

This deep ditch we are in requires some tough choices to be made to get us out – some PARTISAN choices! Taxes need to reset to 1980 levels, trade policies reset to 1970 and there must be a true shift from an oil based to a renewable based energy policy (start by dropping the oils tax breaks & subsidies and using that money to convert gov’t buildings to solar)

You say it can’t be done… I say “Yes we can” just not with you! Four years is a short time to suffer through some one else just to get the right person in! Obama is destroying the Democratic party and will leave this country a one party nation if he maintains his course through a 2nd term…

It always amazes me how so many Democratic politicians show deference and respect to their political opponents but feel so comfortable crapping on their own base. Those crazy liberals of today are the same people you called your base when you were trying to get elected. Those were the people, like me, who donated money to a political campaign for the first time ever and did so multiple times in both the primary and general elections. There’s talk about closing the enthusiasm gap going into November. How do you do that when some of the most visible leaders in that party show blatant disrespect for their voters and supporters? If I am too far left for you to show any regard for my opinion, maybe I’m too far left for you to want my vote? Let me know.

Seems to me when Shrub was in office, there were Democrat opposers to his legislation. He just didn’t care. For all his dumb-assed ideas, from the Patriot Act to 2 illegal wars to the planned privatization of Social Security, at least Shrub was willing to stick to them win or lose. This president drops his guns at the first sign of a fight, under either the guise of bipartisanship or the Mark McGwire defense of leaving past crimes committed in the past.

I went to the doctor the other day to deal with a pain in the neck. They did an MRI and when I actually saw my backbone, I realized I wasn’t a Democrat.

Then, when they did a CAT scan and I saw my brain I realized I wasn’t a Republican.

The reason dem politicians “show deference” to their opponents is because so many of them are weak weenies who are caught up in their all-consuming attempts to raise their level of self-esteem. What they don’t understand is that no one is going to follow a “leader” squealing “shame on you” as they wag their finger at the enemy.

Not so sure about that. In many ways, Hillary and the Clintons have seemed a lot more genuine to me. I recall prior to the 2008 election, while the primaries were going on or shortly after, Clinton’s and Obama’s commitments not to vote for telecom immunity in the Senate. Obama backtracked, Hillary didn’t vote for it. Said a lot to me– that was commitment. This administration has backtracked on too many promises; I’m a political pragmatist and a blatant realist when it comes to political compromises, etc. but they’ve gone way too far. Say what you will, but you have no evidence that a Hillary administration would be worse, and I’ve none that it would be better. It’s interesting to think about though.

The echelon formation works by breaking a turtle via leaving 1 side purposely weak and 1 side extra strong. So when the infantry/phalanx attack it looks like this:

    Sparta Turtle:

    4-4-4

    vs

    6-4-2

The two collide, and the “Turtle” position breaks as one side moves forward too much, overextending, and exposes the other side to being flanked. THIS is how you break to the two party system. You support 1 party over another for a long enough time. Naturally this has to be the Democrats since:

1- They are more third party friendly and have more progressives. (i.e. Kuccinich. Grayson, Weiner who will promote third party friendly legislation. )

2- They are not regressive, and will not outlaw parties/destroy the economy.

Idealism and heroism are admirable, but in war discipline wins the day.

What the hell are you talking about? Ritter, the centrist wimp, appoints Bennet, the corporate shill, and Obama backs him against Romanoff, the people’s choice. In spite of having less campaign money (because he doesn’t accept PAC money), Romanoff surges ahead, so Obama visits Colorado and makes a state-wide conference call to sell “his boy” Bennet to the people, who, BTW, was just implicated in an investment debacle with DPS (taxpayer) money. I agree with JK. This is unforgivable. And you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Again third party will not work because of the inherent nature of our electoral system that is winner takes all:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duverger%27s_law

It is like trying to protest unjust road laws by driving on the wrong side of the street. It physically will not work because you will run against hard sociological laws.

In the end you will end up with 0% representation even if your side is the vast majority. If Democrats get 30% of the vote, and greens 30%, the GOP will win 40%. They will WIN IT ALL and get 100% representation and you will get 0%.

Again the only way to break the 2-party turtle is Echelon Formation. This is real political-warfare reality.

Gibbs used the term “professional left” obviously referring to those who make a living at being categorized as liberal punditry to distinguish from the “base.” Thus, two birds are killed with one stone: a) Obama appears like a centrist to the independents; and b) Gibbs does not technically offend the “voting left.”

The White House Team obviously knows the voting left has no place else to go, the right will never vote for Obama, and that about 5% of the independents are “in play” and will determine the elections as they usually do. The outrage expressed by the actual voters on the left will only help the cause of bringing in the independents on board.

The White House political team also must figure that energizing the dependable voters is not an issue given the stupidity and craziness of what there is to choose from on the right. To that last point, Gibbs and his teammates owe a debt of gratitude to the “professional left” who highlight the nuttiness of right wing cranks daily and nightly on tv and radio. Merely insulting them will not deter the performance of this valuable political service day in and day out.

So, being a win-win tactic, I assume it was fully vetted by the professional politicians inside the White House. An the commenters on Raw Story who express indignity are playing right along.

Dems posturing on wars under Bush.

    Shades of the Nader Hate.
Kinda typical of the sense of entitlement a two party system produces — esp. with Democrats. Anyone that isn’t voting Repuke, they assume are Dem votes. As such, they figure they own them and don’t really HAVE to campaign to them with anything, other than a charismatic leader, marketing, well-intentions and some vague feeling of being ‘superior’ to the Other Guy.
For most Democrats, those things are more important than actual legislative success…after all, to the true believer, even failure can be made to look successful with enough intimidation and ‘spin’.
Gibbs is just a right wing guy who figures anyone that opposes his will is an extremist of some type of another, as ONLY a crazy or drugged person would dare criticize their greatness and intentions.

I posted a similar comment below and I applaud you for your measured tone.

There are a lot of disaffected liberals out there that could, through a modicum of respect and some sound policy decisions, be re-energized and would happily advocate for more of the same. But when you have people at the upper echelons of the administrations continually and quite loudly shouting at the press that progressives are pussy whiners who need to shut up, sit down and be sure to vote in November, well, your strategy is doomed to failure.

I know a lot of people that I work with (anti-war, veteran based non-profit) and am acquainted with personally-myself included-that are furious with the direction the Obama administration has drifted thus far. And yes, he faces unprecedented Republican intransigence, a completely dysfunctional Congress and a corporate-owned media who feed off of false dichotomy and pugilistic punditry that panders to the basest, frenzied, most willfully ignorant portions of our populace. That sucks. But the things most of us are pissed at are ACTUAL policy decisions either advocated or instituted by Obama and his advisors/appointees.

Running to adversarial reporters and calling us drug addled ideologues who are not only so blind to the reality of these decisions but are too ignorant to have any legitimate criticisms is a sure fire way of pissing away any victory they may hope to have. You can’t piss and moan about how the evil right is unfairly tarring your good name and preventing you from implementing the policies that you assured us you’d fight for while simultaneously snickering to the “cool kids” in the Village that we are douches that you’re using for votes. That may fly in high school, but not here. “All you progressives be sure to vote Democratic so that we can change the nation!” rings hollow after you were handed the largest Congressional majority in a generation and pissed it away, watering down decent legislation to a point that rendered it ineffective, all to gain the non-existent votes of a vocally hostile minority who have publicly sworn to no less than your complete destruction.

Sorry to rant, but the failure to make a distinction between those of us who have legitimate, policy (and reality) based issues with Obama and the 25% of the public whose frothing contempt has been sired by hucksters on the teevee and radio, infused with a healthy dose of racism/”otherism” and sent forth to gum up the mechanisms of debate that are the necessary components of a functioning democracy. To be regarded by the administration in the same light as the loons whose narrative has been little more than Socalist-Marxist-Fascist-Communist-Kenya-Ayers-Wright-Alinsky-Lucifer-Teleprompter-Mustard is a complete slap in the face.

If the Republicans are able to emerge from the midterms victorious (to some degree) then the White House will write it off as evidence of the historical tendency for the party in power to lose seats in the midterm after the presidential election. But they would be wise to pay close attention to the surely depressed Democratic turnout, as the current rhetorical path they are rolling out is going to have real, long term implications.

I agree wholeheartedly, I am what many consider very progressive or far right, I am very disappointed by many of the decisions that Obama is making, but politics is horsetrading and biding your time, I understand that achieving huge progressive gains is unlikely these days and setting up for future progressive gains is good strategy, and I still hold out hope that Obama “is playing chess instead of checkers” but with every decision it seems more that he talks a good progressive talk but walks the corporate walk. And just because he has to play his hand close to his chest doesnt mean I have to, I’m going to make my voice heard and Gibbs can choke on it, I thought the deal was we make ALOT of noise and Obama gets SOME of it done.

On the internet, I completely agree that the first tech-savvy administration needs to get off it’s ass and address the situation.

About Obama being worse than Bush, I must disagree. I know that Obama FEELS worse than Bush, because he was elected on the mantle of “change” and has accomplished little in the way of true policy victories, at least ones not so convoluted and diffuse to be largely meaningless. But, in real terms, Bush was way, way, way worse. I saw some of this coming, as it is simply not the nature of man to relinquish power once it has been given. But I do agree that the extent to which Obama has embraced (and in some areas solidified) many of the most heinous Bush overreaches is depressing in the extreme. The worst part of it is that there is really no where to go, as we have a (nominally) two-party system.

If things continue as they are, I am afraid that I will have little choice than to vote third party in 2012. I know that people (of whom I was one in 2000 & 2004) assert that it is throwing away your vote. But, given the performance of the people that won when the vote I cast counted, I think that maybe my vote might count more if it was dedicated against the two party system. It’s a long term goal, but before there can be a third party, they must get a certain number of votes to be eligible for funding and in the position to seriously take part in the election cycle. I dunno, I am torn. But I can say that I, in good conscience, can no longer lend my support to those who view me and my beliefs with such utter, unbridled contempt.

Obama has expanded the unnecessary ‘war’ in Afghanistan when his own CIA states there are 50 or so Al Qaeda operatives in the country and further that the Taliban are not a threat to US interests. There are still 50,000+ troops in Iraq. He has kept Guantanamo open despite vowing to close this festering sore on America’s image. He is every bit as much a believer in the Bush Doctrine as Bush and he has vigorously expanded federal police power over the citizens of America. I am forced to agree with the bumper stickers reading “You can keep the “Change” for there is very little other than phony “financial reform” and the even more cosmetic “health care reform.” Mr. Gibbs is unhappy that some people refuse to accept Obama’s ‘ice cream’ when they can tell by the odor that it is 100% bullshit.

Yeah I agree. Ending the drug war, dismantling the CIA, stopping torture and endless war that is ruining America’s great reputation, getting rid of the Federal Reserve System that has been bankrupting America since 1913…..SOUNDS LIKE A NIGHTMARE (for the corporate NWO)

  • http://twitter.com/OMGWhatDidWeDo Trevinla

Actually he is not President of a PARTY! He is President of the country!!!

He needs to do what is best for the country – not what is best for the corporations or the rich but what is best for the country!!! It has now been proven that the policies of the last 30 years are not working for the country and this President is scared to make changes!

He likes the car analogies so, how about pulling a Rockford and turning this economy around? It’s time to turn that steering wheel hard left and pull the emergency brake!!!!!!

Kucinich should not be considered a left wing whack job. He is the only sane voice at times. Not crazy or unrealistic, but truly the voice of peace and progress. Too much for this administration? Well, too sad.
If we don’t reach for the best peaceful solutions we will never have them. As is the case now.

Hey Gibbs, tell us how you feel about Ben Nelson opposing the Kagan nomination. What’s that? I can’t hear you when your lips are stuck to his ass. How about Nelson and Lincoln voting to extend the Bush tax cuts? How about Nelson, Lincoln, and Landrieu supporting Republican filibusters and trying to kill health care reform? How about the blue dogs, in general, campaigning proudly on how they’ve opposed the administration?

Please, we’d really like to hear it.

    - He put outa stimulus plan that was 1/2 the size it needed to be
    - He gave millions of new customers to Health Insurance companies while getting a couple of things (that never should have been allowed to happen in the first place) outlawed…
    - He allowed the Bush crimes to go unpunished
    - He hired a corporate shill to head the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection! (oh what, he hasn’t done that yet – Maybe we do still have a chance for Elizabeth Warren…)
    - He pushed back the withdrawl date for Iraq
    - He increased the number of Mercenaries in Afghanistan
    - He gave Gov’t contracts to known cheats, theives and liars
    - He let BP handle an oil spill the way they wanted, not the way the Gov’t agencies wanted…

Sorry to rain on your attempt at being positive to the president, but his education policies in “Race to the Top” are nothing more than an attempt to break the “powerful” teacher unions and privatize education. He wants more charter schools. He wants teachers to be more accountable. This would be okay if teachers were held to the the same standard as CEOs, politicians or pundits! This is another attack on people who helped get him elected. By the way, what kind of school do his daughters attend? All progressives need to vote Green Party. Ralph Nader was right! On the major issues, there isn’t a dime’s bit of difference between them. Let the Dems and Repugs be the corporate party that they are and let the People be represented by a party that really is progressive!

Prediction: Soetoro will re-invent himself as champion of the “bipartisan” neocons, aka, the Banking Party and the Party of Monopolies and job offshoring, absorbing whatever neoliberals have absolutely no shame left in their public alliances (Dodd, Frank, Pelosi, Reid, et al.), now that the true Democratic party, with its former anti-war platform, is in the toilet for the rest of our conceivable lifetime. I wish that were not true.

But Barry always was a neolibcon, and he will tout the bipartisan nature of his unholy alliance and take credit for the extermination of the party of radicals that elected him. Who, he will say, (already has) is way too out there for him.

My prediction. A fine mess. But I feel this was the original idea.

That is why libertarian-leaning republicans and independents are basically the only threat, and a big one. Especially the ones who no longer support wars for oil and drugs. They just don’t perceive the left as being able to get any more traction, thereby free to insult and kick to the curb.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, but that’s what our media does. It likes to make the most rational, logical people, seem insane so that there is no chance of debate in Congress. So that all the self righteous, egotistical, whack jobs can keep their cushy jobs, and monopolize the discussion in this Country.

  • Anonymous

I think the Democrats want to lose control of congress in November. Then Washington goes back to gridlock and the parties can blame each other. Nothing gets done but corporate handouts and both parties can campaign on change again.

You see when we gave them congress and the white house we really expected change but their corporate masters wouldn’t have it so back to gridlock, end less wars and crumbling economy.

Well that’s the difference isn’t it, Gibbs? Liberals want something like the Canadian health system for America. But no politicians even attempt it. Right wingers want to get rid of Social Security and George Bush tried to accomplish just that. He failed but he had no problem trying and he didn’t do it half-hearted and he didn’t apologize. So why wouldn’t liberals feel let down with no one in their supposed camp that seems to share their core convictions?

  • http://www.facebook.com/stranahan Lee Stranahan

I would have been thrilled if President Obama had even tried to keep his promises on health care reform instead of immediately implementing AHIP’s proposal for an individual mandate and having secret negotiations with PhARMA — both of which were 180 degrees the opposite of what Obama explicitly ran on.

That’s not Canadian health care — that’s not doing the opposite of what you ran on.

This country is failing because of the policies of george w. bush. Things haven’t bounced back as fast as everyone would like, but lets not forget who destroyed this country. BUSH AND CHENEY!!!!! It took 8 years for bush to complete his plan for destruction of the middle class. It took 8 years for bush to create billionaires out of millionaires. The frustrated Mr. Gibbs plays a straw-man argument, “They will be satisfied when we have Canadian health care and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon.” Is this a slip that the Obama administration opposes universal health care because Republicans don’t?

Nobody mentioned closing the Pentagon. What happened to the campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay? “President-elect Barack Obama plans to order the closing of the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay as early as his first week in office.” Guantanamo is not the Pentagon.

He is also waaaay behind the curve with his push to increase the number of college graduates. The latest research shows that our “modern” economy does not need more than 40% of the population to have a 4 year degree.

So if the President got his wish more Americans would have massive student loan debt and in an economy who’s jobs would not pay enough to ever pay them off.

    It’s worse than that…

Things are getting bad, and the policy makers in power have been briefed on how bad it is going to get.. That’s why all the “resignations”, generals passing out in hearings and other showing fractures in the structure of the status quo.. The policy makers like I said know that it is going to get MUCH worse.. Many are just quitting, those are the ones who think it will come to politicians snatched out of offices and hung from lamp posts, they want to get out while the getting is good.. The politicians committing political suicide hope that order can be maintained, and that the guys who come in will be blamed for what is unfolding on their watch..

Things are beyond recovery now, and these maggots know it, so for these political creatures, victory is now defeat…

That is why both sides are saying some of the most insulting things towards their bases. It’s a deadly game of musical chairs, they all know that the music is about to stop, and anybody found sitting in a seat of power when the peasants kick in the door is headed to the nearest lamp post. If it doesn’t come to that, then whoever is in power will not see power for over a generation, much like what became our political landscape after the great depression, or should I say, the last great depression.

Good luck, you’re gonna need it to see 2020.

    Dear Mr Gibbs,
If you, President Obama, and the Democratic Party want the support of we “fucking retarded” progressives take a good look at yourselves in the mirror. Backroom deals with big pharma. Not demanding a public option be voted upon. Selling out the U.S. for the gain of Wall Street overlords. On and on…..

The criticism is not for what President Obama didn’t accomplish but for the simple fact that he never tried. Our nation desperately needs people like Elizabeth Warren and Dawn Johnsen yet President Obama has not called them to service. We have no business occupying either Iraq or Afghanistan yet we still are. Gitmo still exists. Those in our government and military that justified and engaged in torture walk are still employed in their government roles.

Mister Gibbs, we gave President Obama the bully pulpit for one reason alone — that of benefiting we the people. When President Obama starts using that pulpit for the benefit of ALL the people of our country then, and only then, can you claim our disappointment fueled outrage is unjust.

The professional American Left and the professional American Right are indistinguishable both hate Democrtats and secretly yearn for bad times so a desperate nation will turn to them for salvation. Despite the fact that President Obama has shepherded more meaningful progressive legislation through a reluctant and devisive Congress than anyone since the 1930′s the Left professes to prefe4r George Bush The only time the professional Left was really happy was in December, 2000 when their favorite candidate got into the White House. The Left loved George for the same reason Christians love lascivious sin, because George like Sin shows that the world really needs a messiah.

We need to recognize the power of the Republican filibuster to derail any even remotely progressive ideas. It has been that power that prevents Democrats from pushing anything that would be truly effective in resolving the economic mess or giving us a decent health care system.

That said, it is possible to change or kill the filibuster. It can be done at the beginning of the next congress when the rules are set and voted on. At that time a simple majority can fix the problem.

The question is, will they? I suggest we demand the Democrats fix this and to make it possible we give them one last chance at holding a majority. If the next term is as ridiculous as the current one, I would support the Green Party or staying at home alternatives

Remember, we do not have instant run off voting in the US. Our existing winner take all election system allows a minority to gain power if the majority splits its vote. That means if progressives are the majority but split their votes between Democrats and Greens, the Republican minority will take control. That would be quite the poison pill.

YOUR MADE MAN WILL NOT DO ANY OF THIS SO HE CAN GO STRAIGHT TO HELL, WITHOUT MY VOTE.I AM WORKING ON HAVING EVERYBODY THAT IS TIRED OF THIS FUCKING BULLSHIT TO CHOOSE THE WRITE-IN CANDIDATE BOX IN THE NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
In the meantime I will work diligently to remove others from public office or position that aren’t representing their respective constiuancies. TELL YOUR MADE-MAN TO GET RID OF THAT IDEALOGICAL ASSHOLE, RAHM EMANUEL, AND ANY OTHER BLUEDOG DEMOCRAT, THAT KEEP OUR GREAT COUNTRY FROM PROGREESING INTO THE FUTURE.
HE WON’T SO FUCK HIM. AGAIN I WILL FIGHT DILIGENTLY TO KEEP HIM AND ANY OTHER TRAITOR BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION FROM RETAINING THEIR SEAT, JUST AS I WILL VOTE ONLY FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICIANS THAT LOOK OUT FOR WE THE PEOPLE , NOT THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS.

So these astute students of human nature and whole-hearted humanitarians find it hard to understand why a starving dog they lured from the streets with promises of decent daily nourishment but then proceeded to starve in captivity has finally snarled at them after repeated broken promises and gratuitous insults transcending the line between thoughtless and just plain malicious! Yeah, Mr. Gibbs, why don’t you bend over so my pit bull can glom onto your useless ass? Fuck all those Obomber minions! As Stokely Carmichael famously warned, “Move over, brother, or we’ll move over you!”

I wouldn’t have minded being partially sold out on health care reform if he would have gotten us out of Iraq and shut down Gitmo and stopped all torture and reinstated the rights of humans and enforced more transparency in government. You know, all the things he promised he was going to do?

The critics can only work with what they have, and he’s not given much for anyone to be satiated with.

It IS reality, except to everyone but these miscreants and those foolish enough to believe them. I fear it’s too late – Gibby says it ain’t reality, leaving unstated the reason: the corruption is too deeply rooted. They won. We lost. Come on over to Europe, where the air is freer!

voting for party rather than candidate is what AMERICANS do, that’s how all of the failed Congress critters stay in office. The “party” has been infiltrated, and the sheeple don’t understand that.

I’m tending pretty strongly toward your position. I am reminded how we on the outside are rather blind to the actual paths of power within the inner circuitry.

I was listening to the great Robert Parry of Consortium News, who pretty much carried the ball on Iran/Contra after the destruction of Gary Webb, and he shows a deeper understanding of how terrible the force patterns are in those contexts. Please keep in mind what happens to presidents who roll back the US Steel price increases by means of “jawbone control” (see my recent post on another RS article), who make peace with the enemy (Russia) behind the backs of the military (while the Soviet leader likewise cuts his own throat by making peace behind the backs of his own general staff), declares unilateral moratoria on nuclear testing in unannounced speeches (American University), fires legacy cabinet members for backstabbing him (Dulles) and generals (Lemnitzer).

As w000t, my correspondent over at that other thread aptly observed, “JFK had made so many enemies his downfall was inevitable.”

It’s naïve to think politics is irrelevant to the practical power available to a head of state. Keep in mind, FDR had a 70% majority in Congress when he took office. You think that doesn’t help? Get some more Democrats on board, if that’s really what you want.

Here’s the Parry clip, in all-too-brief:

But there really is a danger, if radical elements get control, full control of Pakistan, which has nuclear weapons, which was always the big threat, and it was one that Bush and the NeoCons recklessly ignored in favor of this other agenda they had of going into Iraq, and then maybe getting regime change in Syria, and Iran, and — and that was what they wanted.

Um, so they let this other problem get worse and worse, and now the United States is stuck. The Obama administration has inherited a mess. And I don't think it's been particularly clever in how they've tried to respond to it, but I think Obama's been mostly concerned about his political flanks, that if he announced a complete pullout, he would come under such attack in Washington, where the NeoCons are still very powerful, in terms of the news organizations, the OpEd pages, the talk shows, and so forth — he would have been excoriated. And the US military would have attacked. General McChrystal was leaking information about what had to be done in terms of escalating. General Petraeus wanted the escalation. Sec'y of State Clinton wanted the escalation. Defense Sec'y Gates wanted the escalation.

So for Obama to have gone against that he would have paid a very high political price.

I’ve got to get to work. Listen to the mp3 if you want the context.

    Jane Hamsher:

Robert Gibbs — says “the professional left is not representative of the progressives who organized, campaigned, raised money and ultimately voted for Obama.” Well, the Obama in the White House is not representative of the Obama who organized, campaigned, raised money and ran for office, so I guess its’ a wash.

I don’t recall Obama making campaign promises to increase the defense budget and cut Social Security benefits, order the assassination of American citizens without due process, or cut sweetheart deals with the pharmaceutical industry in exchange for political patronage. Where was the bold, inspirational speech where he vowed to give AT&T immunity for operating their own private corporate spy network, tax people’s health insurance benefits, abandon gay rights and throw a party in the rose garden for Bart Stupak’s presidential signing statement? When did he promised to re-appoint Ben Bernanke, protect the bonuses of bailed out bankers and keep shoveling money at Wall Street?

Oh, puh-lease. The filibuster is such a straw man for self-inflicted D dysfunction. If Obama had wanted real progress, he would have gotten behind some bold initiatives and thrown his weight around back when he had the possibility to get something out of it. Instead, he got busy felating Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman — and still had to give away the farm to “get something passed.”

I love how we’re always supposed to wait for that shiny pony just arond the corner, give them one last chance to make up for all the fuck ups, and then when we’ve delivered they turn around and flip us the bird, telling us we’re just retarded dreamers who should get a life.

Yes, I want a single payer health system as do the majority of the US population. If you don’t want to look like Bush stop acting like him. Hmm sell out to health industry? check, Don’t break up big banks, check. Close Getmo?, Net neutrality? The other thing most do not notice is half the crap in the bills you passed were Republican ideas from the 1990′s, maybe if you stopped moving more to the right they would stop comparing Obama to Bush. Stop watering down bill to get Republican votes, because the only votes you get are NO.

The growing dissatisfaction with the Center Right Obama Administration only gets Rahm Emmanuel’s and Robert Gibbs’ dismissal as “retards” or drug abusers.

When will a leader emerge to claim the day we have had enough of the broken promises and lies?

Hey all you pathetic losers getting ready to throw the Obama admin. under the bus because your fragile egos are so hurt by Robert Gibbs! To quote Minor Threat, “Boo-fucking-hoo!!!!” And to reiterate: if you vote in anger for any third party candidates this Nov. YOU ARE THROWING YOUR VOTE AWAY!! There is no other way to look at it. Fuckiing morons. The only way third party candidates have any chance of becoming even remotely viable is if America switches to instant run-off/tiered voting. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE COUNTRY ON PLANET EARTH WITH OUR WINNER-TAKE-ALL VOTING SYSTEM IN WHICH THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES GET ELECTED TO MAJOR OFFICE. NONE! God, you Green Party “radicals” are so fucking retarded! So, instead of taking your pathetc anger over some offhand comment by made Robert Gibbs and turning it into a vapid, empty statement by voting for some Green Party dumb-ass who’ll never be elected, why don’t all you dumbasses fight to get instant run-off voting in your local politics? That would actually be a step towards accomplishing your third-party goal. First you get IRV at the city-level. Then you get your state to adopt it. Then, if enough states adopt it, it might possibly go national. And then, AND ONLY THEN, WILL YOUR VOTE FOR THE GREEN PARTY MEAN ANYTHING!! Otherwise, face it, you’re just an impotent, pathetic, self-righteous liberal stomping his little feet and, I’ll say it again, licking Ralph Nader’s pompous ass (hole). And that asshole doesn’t need any more tongue-action!

I am not here to talk about broken campaign promises. I am pointing out Mr. Gibbs has resorted to the same distraction and deception techniques we mocked during the last administration.

While the Bush administration tolerated their ideological zeolots, the Obama administration is insulting his and making enemies of them using these tactics of typecasting and exaggeration. I suppose that’s just what Obama needs right now, more enemies.

The Right Wing loves how easily it can manipulate the super-reactive Obama administration. Step by step, the Right will guide the response of the Obama administration to keep moving it’s acceptable definition of sanity more and more to the Right and alienating it’s own supporters.

  • Dolmance

I agree that the Obama administration should go after the Republicans and confront them daily, until the American people are ready to make them a bad memory.

But don’t forget – government always disappoints. The alternative to Obama is cyanide in the form of the Republican Party. The President has to pick his battles and choose a strategy for each, very, very carefully.

Criticizing Obama for continuing Cheney et al.’s policies is not crazy, nor is it inaccurate in many cases. The attack on civil rights, and the concentration of wealth is going on unabated. Those are the two things that will eventually internal violence in America.

What I described is the famed “nuclear option”. The Republicans threatened to do that when the Dems used the filibuster against them.

The congress holds a majority vote on the rules they will be following at the beginning of each session. That is the only time that rule can be changed without facing an opposition filibuster. Otherwise the R’s will have to agree to allow the D’s to vote on the rule change.

If this is the White Houses’ true take on the “left” then why did Obama record an address for the “crazy lefties” at Netroots Nation asking us to keep pushing the progressive agenda?

Gibbs is the new Geithner. An embarrassment to this administration.

Barack Obama in his 2005 Daily Kos diary:

“In that spirit, let me end by saying I don’t pretend to have all the answers to the challenges we face, and I look forward to periodic conversations with all of you in the months and years to come. **I trust that you will continue to let me and other Democrats know when you believe we are screwing up.**  And I, in turn, will always try and show you the respect and candor one owes his friends and allies.”

Nice idea, at first I was going to agree, but if a Nader/Paul ticket ever won, Nader would be assassinated and we’d be left with Paul as prez. The corporations would rejoice, as they could ride roughshod over us even more than they already do, shred what remains of the social safety net (social security, medicare, etc.).

I will not vote for Mr. Paul. Libertarianism is a stupid, obsolete ideology for people who do not know what the central problem of our time is–corporatism.

This is bulls**t! Time to fire Gibes and Rahm. And Geithner. And the other sellouts. It’s time for Obama to get serious about keeping his promises (or at least fighting for them) or make way for someone else (like Dennis). Putting the Republicans back in power isn’t the answer to a failed Obama presidency, but a real progressive in 2012 could give him a serious challenge. We’re tired of being kicked under the bus. We worked our collective butts off to get him elected; we have a right to be upset that the White House just caves in without a fight on the important issues.

  • Anonymous

Gibbs needs to resign. He is a republican… using republican talking points to attack Obama’s BASE for goodness sakes. He should be ashamed, and Obama should fire him. It won’t happen of course, Obama himself is a closet republican. He has ignored the left from day one, and has sought to appease republicans at every turn. Rahm Emmanual is another one… he hates the left and appeases neocons and republicans at every chance. He and Obama are buddies though… both belong to the same gay bath house in Chicago and have hung out together (no pun intended) for years.

Yes George Bush does ring a bell, mindboggling. And the reason we had to deal with that piece of shit for 8 years is because a bunch of dumb-fuck Nader supporters in Florida couldn’t extricate themselves from thier own egos long enough to cast a vote for Al Gore. Thanks a lot, Green Party fucktards. And to all of you who believe that there is no difference between the two parties, think how different Katrina would have played out if Gore had been elected. There are a bunch of dead black people in LA who (if they were alive) would beat your third-party ass in for saying there is not difference between the Dems and the Retardlicans. But I guess you’re too busy padding around in your pajama bottoms in your mom’s house to notice that only a spoiled brat could possibly think there’s no difference between the parties. Fuck all y’all third party dipshits. I’ll take you seriously when instant run-off is used in American elections. Until then, you can all suck it!

Whether or not they’re gay isn’t important, probably 90% of the folks in DC are that anyway. But noticing that they are republicans *is* important. For the mere statement of the fact that there is not one iota of difference between the Obama presidency and the Bush presidency to bring about Gibbs’ comments shouldn’t be surprising either. After all, they even use the same propaganda techniques as the Bush crew. “Ooooo, you must be on drugs to think that (because our Jedi mind tricks don’t work on the stoned).”

These people are collectively a joke in comparison to actual democrats, let alone progressives. This WH sits to the right of Eisenhower.

I say, give up on these idiots. Put all your effort into throwing out corporate congresspeople. The “haves, and the have mores” can and will elect their favorite stooge without our help, but if we can grant the legislative branch some cajones, we can begin to limit their influence.

No, I would be happier Obama would have repudiated torture with a resounding No, would not continue contracting mercenaries not “contractors” as the brainwashed media calls them. I would support an Obama program that would have mandated a public option. They could have pushed harder for this but did not. They could have taken it to the people. They could have also been more assertive about regulating derivatives and hedge funds. And what the he** are they talking about with eliminating the pentagon. A reduction of pentagon spending to much less than 60% of the discretionary budget which is what it is now, is not unrealistic. The unrealistic ones are those that can think that the status quo is sustainable in the country. It obviously is not. The country is on the verge of economic collapse, and to a war economy to prop it up. This is not a tenable way to prevent this country’s destruction. It will only exhacerbate it. The fact that this white house calls those that dare to criticize policies that essentially mimic republican, and neocon policies in actions (words don’t matter here, actions speak louder, right?) is what is the problem. And the fact that privacy has not been protected and extrajudicial assassinations have been ok’d is not OK. As is neither the fact the gov. let BP censor the press, and freedom of speech, that we are blindly supporting israeli murder of aid workers in international waters and providing them with weapons they have used to commit war crimes as per a jewish member of the UN, Goldstone. Continue with the list? That we have not really put very much funding for green energy, nor that the gov. has allowed a pubic option to take hold which is not the same as the Single payer only system AT ALL. Nor that NSA funding and funding for companies like halliburton have been cut. Obama has done LITTLE TO NOTHING in action. This relates DIRECTLY to his campaign promises. He extends war spending. He continues to work for those that employ a nice little puppet to put on a nice little progressive face to cover up the dirty work that is really being done. Jailing whistleblowers and making it a priority to jail them, as well as a rapper soldier who made a song protesting the stop loss policy also wreaks of a police state. I don’t care if fox news is making Obama out to be a communist, as if what Fox news says anything meaningful anyways. It is corporate propaganda period. We may not even get the clinton era tax rise to tax the rich to 39%. In Nixon’ time it was in the 70% range for the wealthy, and before that the maximum tax rate was up to 90 something%. Look up maximum tax rates. Obama is supporting still tax breaks for companies that move abroad, and for capping social program spending only and NOT military spending. He is hardly even a democrat at this point. No, it is not unrealistic to criticize him. HE IS A FRAUD, PERIOD. Obama is at best packaging for a system that is broken. The ship is sinking folks. The stock market does not mean sh**. Take your money out if you have any sense, because consumer spending is not going to up, as neither is employment to a significant degree. Spend locally, and support local businesses and credit unions. This will strengthen our economy more than anything else…

If anyone has doubts about Obama and team betraying many of the things he promised to get elected, this should put them on notice on what he thinks of the people who elected him.

We have been betrayed when he campaigned for civil liberties yet his record dealing with the Fourth Amendment is worse than Bush’s was. Earlier this year, he and the Congress(on voice vote no less[cowards not wanted to be recorded]) re-authorized the Patriot Act.

We were betrayed when his boy in the Treasury gave the American taxpayers money away to the very people that caused the financial disaster with hardly anyone being held accountable.

We were betrayed in the Gulf when he allowed the criminals that caused the oil gusher to be in charge of the Gulf and used government agencies to block people from documenting this disaster, violating people’s rights and poisoning the waters with dispersants which effectively put toxins into everything in this body of water. And now they are claiming it’s all fixed. If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you, cheap.

There are so many of these betrayals of his promises that the list could go on and on.

We wanted real change for the cesspool that Washington has become. Instead, the stink seems to be getting worse. We do get an occasional bone thrown our way but even then Obama seems to fight against the very things he promises. Gibbs is just showing his true colors with his attacks. And we the people will be the ones on the short end of the stick.

  • ComradeRutherford

Gibbs came out swinging today in the White House new plan for the 2010 elections: attack the Democratic voting base and demoralize them so that the GOP can win the upcoming elections more easily.

With Obama shitting on the Democrats since the day he was sworn in, why am I supposed to believe he is NOT a Republican? Why am I supposed to vote in 2010? I know, I know, the GOP is worse.

Which leads me back to what my friend told me after 9/11: The only measurable difference between the Democratic Leadership and the GOP is how quickly to turn the US into a totalitarian police-state.

The tone of some of these comments bother me. Robert Gibbs’ (asinine) comments notwithstanding, President Obama has passed landmark legislation (health care reform, finance regulation) DESPITE facing the very real onslaught of an alliance of conservative media and a Republican/Tea Bagger/Conservative machine seemingly out to torpedo his presidency.

Can he be more progressive than he has been? Sure, but there’s the fact that he genuinely appears to be centrist; never mind the fact that that I am not sure that America can handle a Black male that aggressively pursues his agenda, even if that person happens to be president.

President Obama has done some remarkable things, though that is by no means the same thing as saying that he should be above criticism or that he shouldn’t be pushed by the Progressive side of the aisle to do even more.

for sure, wcl. ‘Centrist’ = neoliberal = elitist = the foil for the right in the 2-party oligarchy-promoting, middle-class crushing nightmare we live in. Starting in 1980, the right moved far right, and the ‘center’ moved to where the right was. Now all the right is in John Birch society territory, the ‘center’ is right and the liberals are ‘far left’ and the euro-left or social democrats are full-blown radical commies. The american corporate propaganda machine keeps it that way. Obama is a fraud, plain and simple.

Centrists are often people who don’t know anything and just want to be ‘safe’. So they try and sit in the middle. Little do they comprehend, the lazy measurements they rely on been completely compromised and manipulated.

Gibb is right. There are some very vocal people on the left that were dissatisfied from DAY ONE that everything was not INSTANTLY changed to their liking. Forgetting that this is a Democracy and that, unlike the last royal idiot for president, Boy George, a responsible president does not ram his agenda down the throats of the country, these people have demanded exactly that. Sometimes ideology is blind to reality.

But I sympathize with them since I agree in most part with their agenda. I too wish all the right things would just happen. They should. It’s just that the left put blinders on on Jan 20, 2008, refusing to acknowledge that Obama cannot force others to approve his agenda, he does not have a magic wand. He still has to deal constitutionally with those in the legislature who have differing opinions. Unlike his predecessor he not a monarch. Still, they have attacked, attacked, attacked. Additionally, I strongly suspect that a lot of the dissatisfied left that Gibbs is talking about are, in actuality, Republican imposters pretending to be Democrats on the internet, especially on blogs, trying to sow discontent in the ranks of the Dems.

I think there is still time for this group to grow up and support this president since he may be the last best hope progressives have. Of course the “right” realize this to so they are not going to let up one tiny bit.

Byron I respect your opinion, but Obama has NOT done all he could to get across at least the platform he ran on. If his administration had been as on top of it as his campaign would, then we would be in a much better position today as a country. He did not “rally the troops” when he could have, and many of the choices he has made are not subject to a partisan vote. Gibbs is not helping the situation; his comments released today are like salt in a wound. And times have changed dramatically from election day. He needs to be much more in line with the progressive agenda, otherwise this country may be ripe for a real 3rd party.

If President Obama had fired all of Bush’s prosecutors and got rid of Bush’s Federal Reserve handlers things might be differant. We see Obama increasing the totalitarian state Bush initiated. Why is Guatanomo still open? Why hasn’t habeus corpus been returned. Why is the Patriot Act still in force? Why does Obama want to increase spying the citizens of this country? In some ways Obama is worse than Bush. If you talk the talk, then walk the walk. We’ve had enough of liars and hypocrites.

“he would have paid a very high political price” imo, he’ll be out of the game for good in a few more years. What then? It will be too late to show leadership – still not too late now, but nearly. That assumes everything is not going the way he wants, of course.

That’s simply a lie. That’s a bullshit talking point spread by the “centrist” Dino-Dems like the idiots at Dailykos and places like that.

Everybody I know, even those who had serious doubts about Obama, WANTED him to get in there and live up to the promise. He did not. Many are just, finally, getting over their denial. Apparently you aren’t one of those people. I know it’s hard to face the truth, but it’s undeniable.

As they used to say in Russia “The Czar is good, but he has evil advisors.”

These are the people Obama chose to run things. So are the Republican leftovers like Gates. So is the horde of Goldman-Sachs alumni who run his economic team and Treasury. So is the “triangulating” Clinton whose strategy is to stay just a sliver to the left of the most extreme Republican position. So are Rubins and the rest.

Notably absent are ANY Progressives or Liberals. That’s why Warren hasn’t been nominated but will be passed over as “impractical” once the Dems lose some seats in the midterms in favor of a Wall Street insider.

Face it. Obama is a Wall Street suckling, civil liberty hating, job destroying, torture enabling Republican. But he’s a Black Republican who can give us a rousing speech before selling us out to the same bastards.

Just like the Bush administration, the Obama administration responds to legitimate criticisms with name calling. I no longer have any doubt whatsoever that Obama is one of the bad guys.

“They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president,” he said.

Well, I would be. The man’s got guts. He’d never have bailed out the banks. We’d have single-payer health care. He would actually work with both the Democrats and the Republicans who are pro-peace. And, he would do whatever he could to reinstate the original freedoms as spelled out in the U.S. Constitution. (My personal choice for this country? Kucinich as president, Ron Paul as vice president. They would argue, yes, but only where the left and right in this country would also disagree. No matter what, we would know that they are both thinking of what’s best for us and this nation).

Gibbs may be right in stating that “professional left” does not represent the day-to-day progressive in this country–but neither does Obama, that right-leaning Centrist.

And, as far as Rahm Emanuel being “f-ing retarded”, that’s not what we’re saying. We’re saying that the United States cannot and will not get out of this mess until we stop kissing Israel’s butt. Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff does not give us the “audacity of hope” in that department.

Gibbs is clueless. He, as well as most people in D.C., is just clueless. We just ain’t buying their crap anymore and they can’t seem to get it through their thick heads that the masses really are “waking up”.

When are you people going to realize that you didn’t “elect” your president? Obama does not answer to “We The People”– He answers to the powers that placed him in the White House. Look at who his people have worked for in the past. Republicans and Democrats are but two factions of the same corrupt party. No one gets nominated for the presidency in this country unless they are vetted, groomed and paid for by the international bankers and their many minions. While we squabble over ‘taxes this’ and ‘taxes that’, ‘Republican this’ and ‘Democrat that’ they’re laughing all the way to the bank. No wait, they’re already AT the bank.

I understand what you’re saying, lyris. The standing POTUS must obey the PowersThatBe or get assassinated. We learned that in 1962 and onward. However, I watch things closely. If Kucinich were to get elected then that would mean that the PowersThatBe are losing power. Kucinich has guts, spiritual strength, ethics, integrity, and is an honest man. And, he has a good woman who not only respects him but supports him as best she can. I know it’s weird, but they remind me of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln (except their heights are alternated).

Comments such as cited by Gibbs aims at all people on the left. This is the voting bloc that got Obama elected into office. But it appears that Obama is on his way to a one term, and then Hillary will have her shot.

I voted for Obama, and he’s lost me. His administration’s latest pablum spin on the cleanup of BP’s oil spill reeks of the poop smell. I suppose someone from BP is paying off someone in Obama’s administration…maybe Obama himself.

BP is an evil corporation, and Obama needs to put some of those evil executives in prison for continuous violation of safety laws. A few million dollar fines will not do. They must do prison time to get it through their thick skulls that they’ve killed American citizens at the expense of company profits.

Obama has two more years left to makeup for the terrible mistakes that he’s made. He did not fight for a health insurance public plan, and the current plan will not do justice. I’m more than fed up with his speeches. I usually don’t listen anymore, cuz you know when his lips are moving, the real truth does not come out.

  • Anonymous

You are very naive. Bush/Cheney were just puppets in a decades-long (if not century-long) plan to destroy the middle class. Obama is just the latest ‘useful fool’ in a long line of useful fools. The man has sold out his race, his country and the Constitution He’s worse than the previously mentioned criminals because he did the worst thing he possibly could have done; he promised Hope knowing full well that he could not, WOULD NOT deliver it. This country desperately needs to get over the false Left/Right, Democrat/Republican paradigm. It’s a Brave and Ugly New World.

Nah, Hillary’s busted big time. So busted it’s now called the “Bush/Clinton Crime Syndicate”. Hillary is toast and she knows it.

Palin? Well. . . she’s just stupid. In a recent news article she can’t even keep up with a teacher. Every college educated person knows that teachers aren’t “academics”. They only have to have a “C” to become a teacher. Nearly every other major requires a “B” or higher to achieve the degree. If Palin can’t compete with an average brain then it’s doubtful she’ll ever make president of the newly awakened populace.

I agree with much of the Left’s criticism of Obama, particularly his continuation of Bush’s war in Afghanistan, Bush’s idefinite detentions without trial, etc. But you lost me when you said Hilary. Her politics, like her husband’s, is exactly the same as Obama’s corporatist “centrism.” What we need to do is build progressive MOVEMENTS that empower people before we can even begin to hold so-called progressive politicians to account. They will only be as progressive as we have the power to force them to be. The whole Clinton-Obama centrist program shows how weak we progressives are. Only we can change that.

There is no extreme left in the United States. To be on the extreme left (i.e. communism) you have to support the same kind of authoritarianism you see on the extreme right (i.e. fascism). Take secrecy, government spying, torture, wars of imperialism, etc. These things are easily found on the extreme right, right there in the Republican Party. So, show me the extreme left. I dare you.

Exactly. HERE is the “Change” you can “believe in”:

“At the time, the leading names floated about town were Joan Dempsey, a career Pentagon intelligence official who had served as CIA Director George Tenet’s chief of staff; Maureen “Mo” Baginski, a former top NSA official who had helped reorient the FBI toward counterterrorism after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks; and Rep. Jane Harman, the hard-edged California Democrat who had won intelligence community plaudits for working across the aisle in support of Bush administration national security programs.

Ostensibly, Obama could have had any of the three to run the NGA. Instead, the White House reached down into the ranks for Long, a career DoD intelligence official whose B.S. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and masters in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America seemed to equip her perfectly to run “one of the ‘top computer geek shops’ in the national security world,” as the A.P.’s Kimberly Dozier put it.

Unlike nominees to run the CIA and Directorate of National Intelligence, Long’s appointment did not need Senate confirmation.

Which was convenient for the White House, already under fire for continuing many a Bush administration national security policy. From 2003 to 2006, Long served as deputy to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s intelligence chief Stephen Cambone, a controversial figure who ran some of the Bush administration’s most aggressive security initiatives.”

Obama considered JANE HARMAN, the Congresswoman/ ISREALI ZIONIST SPY CAUGHT BY THE FBI DISCLOSING SECRETS TO A FOREIGN SOURCE.

But instead settled for one of Rumsfeld’s dummies.

    BRILLIANT!!!!

Even if the candidate is good, they must toe the party line, which means that they end up writing the legislation that their sponsors want. Until those with integrity can find refuge in a party for the people, we will descend further into the abyss the corporations want.

    -welcome to the plantation.

While I agree with your first couple statements I must take issue with your assertions that Americans suck and are brainwashed. While certainly some people are brainwashed and do suck many of us aren’t and don’t. Oh yeah and I couldn’t give a shit less if some other countries want to mock Americans. They can suck it. Because regardless of the tyranny trying to take hold of this country we still have some damn good folks here – fighters too.
