“It has become something of a shrine,” Jan Scruggs told US News and World Report in 2007. “It has helped people separate the warrior from the war and it has helped a nation to heal.” So powerful is its impact, replicas of the wall tour the country, reminding towns and villages that sent so many of their young to southeast Asia of the sacrifices made and the lives cut short by combat, then and now.”

BroccoliRob, you have no idea what the First Amendment means. It guarantees that governments will not curtail citizens’ right to speak, but citizens CANNOT say anything they like. There are laws that prevent you from yelling “fire” in a theater, for instance. You cannot call up your neighbor and threaten to kill him without facing consquences, like being charged with terroristic threats. What Dr. Laura did was NOT suffer government consequences but derision in the court of public opinion. She took HERSELF off the air; no one else did (or did so publicly, but it wasn’t the government that intervened). If conservatives believe in freedom of speech so strongly, why was the couple that wore anti-Bush T-shirts arrested during his administration? Or the guy outside Pittsburgh arrested when he went to a Bush appearance with an anti-Bush signs? Yes, conservatives believe in freedom of speech, all right, as long as the speaker agrees with them. And it’s “liberal,” not “lib,” which is derived from the Latin word for “freedom.” Perhaps we should then call you “con,” which means “against” or “fool” as in con man?

I remember a radio therapist some years ago name of Toni Grant. I loved her show, she was so intelligent and caring and thoughtful, just what you would expect of a specialist giving advice to people who have problems.

Schlessinger by contrast is using the airwaves to vent her hostility by being abrasive and just downright mean to callers who have genuine problems they need help with. What I do not understand is why her show was so popular?!

As a young african-american male, I’m not offended by Dr. Laura’s protest or Sarah P.’s take on it. The First Amendment does allow us to say whatever we want. People are entitled to like and dislike whomever they please. And Dr. Laura is correct, black people do use the n-word very vocally and freely. Is it right? I don’t know, is there a double standard? Yes there is. Just like why men are celebrated for their number of mates, and women are disgraced for theirs.
