Xe, the private security company formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide, has agreed to pay a 42 million dollar fine for violating US export regulations, The New York Times has reported.

Blackwater, which changed its name to Xe, gained notoriety in Iraq after guards protecting a convoy opened fire in a busy Baghdad square in September 2007, killing as many as 17 civilians.

The fine is relating to hundreds of violations, including illegal weapons exports to Afghanistan and providing sniper training for Taiwanese police officers, the Times reported, citing company and government officials familiar with the deal.

The unannounced settlement comes after lengthy talks between Xe and State Department lawyers that allow the company to avoid criminal charges, the Times said.

Five executives from the controversial company still face indictment on weapons charges, while at least two ex-employees face murder charges after two Afghans died in Kabul in May 2009.

Despite the fines, Xe can still compete for government contracts, the Times said.

nice that they agreed to pay it…

now if the gov’t would just charge them criminally for murder and embezzlement weapons trafficking, tax fraud…

Blackwater, which gained notoriety when several blackwater operatives did something so horrendous and outrageous in Fallujah the residents were SO incensed they burned their bodies and hung them from the bridges igniting the insurgency.

A piddling fine is just a corporate “Get out of Jail Free” card.

Corporate America will never be cleaned up until the executives that run the companies, as well as the majority shareholders, are personally held responsible for the despicable acts of the companies they run. Hard time in prison and debilitating financial penalties that knock them and their families down a few tax brackets would be a good place to start.

All part of the business plan. Doesn’t even make a dent in their profits.

$42 mil? What a bargain! OJ would have paid that and he only killed two – allegedly.

Blackwater is now a foreign entity. Why are they still a war contractor for the US?

The purpose for any war is to end it unless you’re a contractor at which point the purpose of any war is to continue it to make profit. So why do we have ANY contractor working for our armed forces?

Seems to me any contractor working in a war zone has a conflict of interest because corporations are required by law to make a profit. That being true The People could bring a case against the government for hiring contractors – provided The People were allowed to legally do that.

Methinks the punishment doesn’t fit the crimes. they should all be keel-hauled, for starters

“Shame on you Xe, if you ever do it again, we’ll, we’ll do something worse” -State Dept. spokesperson with fingers crossed behind back.

Unbelievable!!! And you know Eric Prince’ “Amerikkkenness” is beyond reproach, which is why he had to move to Dubai. haha

If you have doubt that we are a fascist empire, please remember that we hire mercenaries to kill, rape, and plunder across the globe. It should be obvious that by doing so, they are making us less safe by creating whole countries and civilizations that hate us, so that any argument that they are out protecting us, should be summarily dismissed by anyone in possession with an ounce of sense. There’s other evidence, should you have a pulse and eyes, but that really should be enough.

Isn’t it NICE that, if you’re wealthy enough to pay millions that you DON’T HAVE TO GO TO JAIL???

Get them out of our government, get them out of our country. Why are we forced to pay for such goons?

$42M is nothing but an excuse to say “we made them pay.”

How is it they can still do business with the government? This company has committed the equivalent of murder as well as other felonies. If corporations are to be treated as “entities” rather having rights equal to human beings than they deserve an equal level of punishment. They should be ordered to dis-corporate and the responsible executives should be barred from employment within that field as well as held responsible for any personal involvement.

$42 million dollars? Not enough to completely drain the pus out of this abscess.

  • http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepr1xp/index.html unsean

Isn’t the United States government using availing itself of the services of Xe (formerly Blackwater)? If that’s the case, it seems logical to assume that the $42 million being paid out comes from monies we are paying Xe for doing what they do (supposedly protecting embassies and other installations, training troops, and occasionally gunning down civilians).

In short, aren’t we billing ourselves $42 million dollars?

I have an idea: How about we cut all contracts with Xe, then bill them $42 million? I suspect it will bite just a bit more then.

Funny how if you are the RIGHT lawbreaker… you pay a fine, or, if you are dirt scum like me, you break the law and go to jail… (I did not) Bankers and Military contractors ARE our government. They can do anything they want.

  • SuccumbingToSanity

    Sounds more like a $42 million refund…

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
