Troops: Refusing to attend Christian concert got us into trouble

The Army said Friday it was investigating a claim that dozens of soldiers who refused to attend a Christian band’s concert at a Virginia military base were banished to their barracks and told to clean them up.

Fort Eustis spokesman Rick Haverinen told The Associated Press he couldn’t comment on the specifics of the investigation. At the Pentagon, Army spokesman Col. Thomas Collins said the military shouldn’t impose religious views on soldiers.

“If something like that were to have happened, it would be contrary to Army policy,” Collins said.

Pvt. Anthony Smith said he and other soldiers felt pressured to attend the May concert while stationed at the Newport News base, home of the Army’s Transportation Corps.

“My whole issue was I don’t need to be preached at,” Smith said in a phone interview from Phoenix, where he is stationed with the National Guard. “That’s not what I signed up for.”

Smith, 21, was stationed in Virginia for nearly seven months for helicopter electrician training when the Christian rock group BarlowGirl played as part of the “Commanding General’s Spiritual Fitness Concerts.”

Smith said a staff sergeant told 200 men in their barracks they could either attend or remain in their barracks. Eighty to 100 decided not to attend, he said.

“Instead of being released to our personal time, we were locked down,” Smith said. “It seemed very much like a punishment.”

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation first reported on the Christian concert. The foundation said it was approached by soldiers who were punished for not attending or offended by the religious theme of the event.

The group’s president, Mikey Weinstein, claims Christian-themed events are “ubiquitous” throughout the military, and he credited the soldiers for stepping forward.

“Whenever we see this egregious, unconstitutional religious tyranny our job is to fight it,” he said.

Smith said he and the other soldiers were told not to use their cell phones or personal computers and ordered to clean up the barracks.

About 20 of the men, including several Muslims, refused to attend the concert based on their religious beliefs, he said.

Smith said he went up the chain of command and traced the concert edict to a captain, who said he simply wanted to “show support for those kind of events that bring soldiers together.”

While not accepting blame, the officer apologized to the soldiers who refused to attend the concert and said it was not his intent to proselytize, he said.

“But once you get in there, you realize it’s evangelization,” Smith said.

“Commanding General’s Spiritual Fitness Concerts.” WTF??? Any soldiers “duty” is to kill on command. How freaking “spiritual” is that?

  • Anonymous

The military has become more religious. It is very scary. Back when I served, some 20 years ago, there were opportunities to attend religious events, but no-one was ever forced.

In my day, it was called fuck, fuck. Just another way troops get harassed by Senior NCOs and officers.

great……fundamental religious mentality in an armed force……isn’t that what these troops are “supposed” to be fighting elsewhere ?

There is an agenda here as subtle as it is. Religion is nothing more than a belief system. The US military does not go unscathed from the influence of the Kol Nidre Gang who want to cultivate the nonsensical edict that Israel is “Chosen” and must be protected at all cost. What better way to mindbend the sheep in military garb, when their guard is down, and get them to embrace these ridiculous ideologies that when they are sent to the middle east, they are doing “God’s will” and protecting Israel from those “evil islamo-fascist Muslims”. The ruthless Zionista’s never sacrifice their own and even claim when an Israeli soldier is taken prisoner, the news, even in America, reports it as them being “kidnapped’. Welcome to the Jew-nited States of America.

    “Commanding General’s Spiritual Fitness Concerts”

Sounds to me like the Commanding General is a Dominionist. I think it’s time he was relieved of command since he doesn’t understand some very basic precepts of this nation and how our military is supposed to be run.

Fuck him, get him out of that command position NOW!

History repeats itself. Weather it be the Roman Catholic Church spurring the crusaders on to commit acts of barbarism against the infidels, or Hitler doing the same against the Jews. Those in power always need an enemy to justify their aggression. The indoctrination and acceptance to the propaganda is the first step in demonizing the enemy. Once under the spell anything done to the enemy is seen as acceptable. Both sides do it. Just me, I think the world would be a much better place without all this religious crap. Then maybe we could live together in peace. All working for a common goal. To better ourselves and advance ourselves as a species. To leave the world a better place for the generations of our children that will follow us.

Nothing against religion, but there should be no government (i.e. military)/brand of religion (i.e. Christian) connection, period. Why the hell do you think this country was founded? Which brings me to the subject of this mosque in NYC. The government needs to stay out of it, including expressing “opinions” on whether it should be built. If Wiccans want to build a temple there, and have the money, why wouldn’t they be allowed? What’s the point of this country if our citizens do not have freedom of religion?

It has been a long time since I was this pissed off. I chose to be a marine BECAUSE I am not a christian. Christians are supposed to be Christ like: loving, kind, forgiving. Marines are none of those things. We are the what murders and madmen fear most. We are not black, white, Mexican, Irish, Jew, or gentile. We are professional killers. We are the ones who come to end the lives of our enemies. We do this with a deep sense of gratitude that we were made different than most other people who recoil at the thought of extreme violence. Someone has to protect the lambs of this world and we sure as hell can’t do it by becoming those lambs ourselves.

It’s amazing to me that so many are terrified of Muslim terrorists with guns taking over our government. The christian terrorists with guns are embedded in the Pentagon, Congress, the military…

The Evangelicalising of our Armed Forces has been going on for a long time. Most of the officers tend to be highly religious and intolerant of those that aren’t. They take great secretive steps to place their people on the ladder of success with what every officers wets himself over, their Officer Evaluation Report (OER), and unit placement. Officers are faced with a choice: become a fundamentalist Christian in everything you do or your career will stall and one won’t get the choice assignments. If you aren’t nervous by this trend, then you should be. Many Officers see themselves as the Warriors of God in his Army. Pushing Fundamentalist Christian attitudes downward promotes a dehumanization of one’s enemies…the so called ragheads/Musleems/terroreests/insert racist comment here/etc…that makes the combat atmosphere conducive to severe violence and atrocities.
Many of these officers believe themselves on a spiritual Crusade in the Middle East.
I spent MANY years in the Army and I was routinely discriminated against and silently punished for not being a Christian, expressing “Liberal” views and attitudes, standing up for my rights and those that weren’t Christian or practicing at a high level of devotion and “attitude”, not praying before training meetings, and not standing for the Christian pageantry at Xmas parties designed to please the fundamentalists and intimidate the rest of us. One of the reasons I left before retirement was because I couldn’t stand what the officers were doing to the Army I loved. The executive mindset ( a course away from leadership) of the officer corps combined with a fundamentalist attitude makes existing in it as a non believer horrible and one of the reasons our military is becoming a very broken machine. The new officer corps has neutered the NCO corps and they have placed ‘yes men’ as their way of keeping the troops in line and not questioning.
This new Army sure is a hell of an effective inquisition and Crusading tool though.

And most people don’t really care as they are either Christian themselves or well, just don’t care because they figure it’s out of their hands. The country has already been lost, it just hasn’t been made official quite yet.

Fascism has many forms, but all are totalitarian in intent.

And the strange thing is that those who foster fascism usually never realize what they are fostering.

From what I’ve read in the New Testament, Jesus Christ was as far away from being a fascist as one can get, whether in a political, economic, religious or personal sense.

I could quote chapter and verse, but the one that stands out for me is when Jesus said, “What profits a man, though he gain the whole world, yet loses his soul?” Fascists, in whatever form, do seem to keep trying to “gain the whole world,” don’t they? Or maybe it’s control over a country that is desired by the fascist, like a liberal democracy, trying to force everyone to conform to their fascist worldview? Or maybe a country’s military, as in our liberal democracy’s pluralistic one, with some religious fascists trying to convert everyone to their religious fascist view, while falsely claiming that they are followers of Jesus Christ?

Good point. The captain might have crossed the line in making it mandatory, but the real offense was in the General’s sponsorship of the event. With the military controlling everything a soldier is exposed to, a person’s spiritual development is still a matter of personal choice.

This is one of many examples of how the 2003 included Religion. Many soldiers of other faiths are ordered to become Christians and drop their own faith. The illegal invasion of Iraq included US Christian groups teaching Christian Religion to Muslims children by paying the parents money. I’ve lived long enough to see many results of those who mess with God.

My brother’s ship had sermons read over the loudspeaker, they were told that they would be fired if Al Gore won the election (The Navy was signifigantly under manpower allocation) and votes were illegally collected after election day (with aforementioned threats repeated) during the 2000 election. That’s why there was that mysterious push for the absentee ballots, they were stuffing the box overseas. Because of the reasons you cited, he refused to say anything, but his officers should hav been arrested, horsewhipped and jailed. Thats probably good for a few decades in Leavenworth

The same type of thing is happening at the Air Force Academy. The command structure and the chaplains are trying to force the cadets to become Christian fundamentalists. The ones protesting are, as here, Catholics, Muslims, atheists, and supporters of the Constitution who know the Constitution requires separation of church and state. When you link state power, particularly military, and religion you end up with religious wars and the Inquisition–only a protestant fundamentalist inquisition rather than a Catholic one. Indeed, Catholics, other protestants, Muslims and Jews would be victims as would atheists. It is indeed dangerous.

Robert Heinlein has a science fiction novel with this theme–with a twist. The Christian fundamentalists take over the country and install a theocracy. Deep in the missile silos a group of military men link together to overthrow the theocracy and restore the Constitution. He’d be horrified to see the military used to impose the theocracy. I think the book is Revolt in 2100.

Although most, eh, really, all my replies on Raw Story comments, are based on my current thoughts, feelings. Yet this one, I must respond on direct experience.

    Fact:

I am an Air Force vet
    I am an atheist
At basic training, I served as a chapel guide.
On active duty, I’ve attended religious ceremonies, as ordered, specifically in honor of POWs.

I had no complaints about any of this.

I played the game, but I also signed a contract.

    Reasons:

    Let me hit each…

Air Force – my dad was career Navy, so I rebelled
Atheist – just who I am
Basic training – sure, got me out of cleaning the barracks on a Sunday, but enjoyed greeting new recruits with a smile and a positive attitude,
Active duty – selected from my flight to attend religious, ceremonial stuff in honor of POWs; I didn’t have to pray. Just be there for support and remembrance.

I fully support you speaking up in defense of your personal beliefs. I fully respect each of you for your convictions.

Yet! Now I hit you with the fucking hammer!

You will not change anything in the military, at least not for the foreseeable future.

Fulfill your military contract, move on, and advocate for change from without. From within, not so easy.

  • Anonymous

    Why?

  • Anonymous

    Let’s rephrase your comment.

It is not the military, but military command, thus our society that grants military command powers.

Most who enlists do so to escape impoverished conditions, to seek something better than their current circumstances. Flip burgers or serve your country.

Do you know how much these people are paid, soldiers who are tasked to kill and die?

Yes, to kill and die. I was Air Force, and on my first day of basic, I was told specifically that my job, no matter what I actually did, was to kill the enemy, or die. (not something you hear much about AF training.)

Yet, for those who are dedicated to defend and protect…

Are compensated at, basically. minimum wage.

“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” H.L. Mencken

    Truer words never spoken.

Christian Dominionists have deliberately infiltrated the armed services with the specific intent of forcing proselytizing their tiny branch of extremist propaganda onto all other serving personnel and subverting authority to serve the cult..

It is past time for us to understand that this is not a quaint peculiarity, but a dangerous cult with no loyalty to the US or to its people…its member’s loyalty is to the church…and theoretically to ‘God’ as defined by whatever fatwahs are issues by their pastors. They violate their oath of service and the Uniform Code of Military Justice daily…they are guilty of high treason and should be treated accordingly…

…but the delusional nature of America’s fondness for religious ‘freedom’ means that we will treat even betrayal and treason as if were some cute quirky little thing like magic underwear for the Mormons or Lent for Catholics.

This isn’t a cute quirk…this is plotted armed rebellion, deliberate subversion and forced participation in cult events. Arrest them…because they are already at war…with everyone outside the cult…but because we believe in ‘tolerance’ we make intellectual excuses and treat it as something other than spiritual warfare.

Fight back…and fight hard…because we’re the enemy even if we don’t realize it yet…but our ignorance of that will not protect us from them when they come.

    VocMagi,

    Tea party?

I’m sorry, but when I read your words, I thought “tea party.”

Not the same words, but the same attitude.

“Christian Dominionists have deliberately infiltrated the armed services with the specific intent of forcing proselytizing their tiny branch of extremist propaganda onto all other serving personnel and subverting authority to serve the cult..”

I’m sorry, but I still see those who enter military service, especially as enlisted, are those individuals seeking to gain more than they can gain from their normal lives.

Jobs are not coming easy these days.

Our armed forces depend on the destitute, mostly those who are seeking something better than their small-town lives.

Military, teachers, two occupations that defend and instruct our children. Yet, they are also the most under paid of any professionals.

I respect your words, VocMagi, your passion, but what solutions do you offer?

Here are my proposed solutions to your words:

-Promote respect for different views, opinions and ideas within your community
-Respect, even though you might not agree with other opinions, for we are all individuals
-Identify with those who object, understand their perspectives, and know that they also have a voice that might be contrary, but a voice they do have
-Decide to be respectful of those that differ from your point of view
-Enjoy who you are. You are unique, a single one out of all of humanity

Keep up the comments! Our voices are never silent!

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

The people who take up military service are just as you say…they are often victims of circumstance who look for economic improvement…and they deserve our support…but understand that they are doubly victims in this…because they are helpless to safely resist these cultists without risking their careers and even their personal safety.

Follow the link for the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. You will learn what these kids are being subjected to…including violence when they resist indoctrination. The death threats for people who push to enforce already existing military rules designed to protect against predatory proselytizing.

I would promote respect…and I share the same values you do…

…but they are not bound by any such compunction. We are dealing with fanatics…each of whom will abuse even a small amount of authority to serve their church and god. When you are dealing with a fanatic who sees you as a fellow true believer or an infidel enemy, your options become limited. Our tolerance and gentleness becomes a weakness…which they understand and exploit to the fullest extent.

I enjoy my uniqueness…and if any one chooses to exercise theirs I would guard that right as dearly as my own…but when they cross the line into forcing others into subservience…it is war. Either you know its war and are ready to fight for your freedom to be different as well others…or you aren’t…and they will overwhelm you while you vacillate.

I wish it weren’t that bad…but it is.

In other words, military service is for masochists with no self esteem.

This is nothing new. When I was in Basic Training in 1965 I was repeatedly confined to the barracks and forced to clean latrines during “religious services” that were attended by all the other members of my company. I claimed “no religion,” and the “authorities” simply hated it – I guess they wanted us to “have religion” when we went to slaughter entire communities of farmers and fishermen who had no interest in anything but survival. No one dared notice, back in those days, the onslaught of the new, fascist Amerikkka…

That’s the way it is, private. A good (hypo)Christian concert will feel like punishment.

Cleaning your barracks isn’t a bad alternative – cleanliness IS next to Godliness!

The man is basically A CANINE, and you can’t live to be a beastly canine, then you have to be punished one way or another. You have to be Euro-American white person to have equal rights and religious freedom.
HITLER ANNOUNCED WHAT HE CLAIMED, BUT THE HYOCRICY DOES NOT WANT TO SAY WHAT THEY PRACTICE! It was lack of Hypocricy that made Hitler so bad. If he committed GENOCIDE of Indians, Africans, Original Americans, Arabs or far-Eastern races, he will be adorned and given the title of “SIR” by Brittish and “SAINT” by the poop, as in the cases of Warrne Hastings, Robert Clive or queen Isabella etc!

Just like Extreme Islam, Extreme Christianity and Extreme Judaism, gotta make them soldiers believe the are doing the killing in the name of God, right?
Wait until Sunday is a state mandated “Sabbath” and civilians are beaten killed and jailed for not observing the Holy Day.
If the Neo-Cons and the Televangelist have it their way, it’s not far off.

I am 77 years old, served 1950-1954, two years in combat zone and never saw a chaplain. Home at Yuma A.F.B., 110 F. in the shade, a “chaplain” closed the base movie theater for a week for a “revival.” I met him later on the dunes and refused to salute him. I usually saluted any human officer detritus He chased me over the sand. I won. He used to come into our barracks with Moody Bible Institute B.S, I always hoped to meet him off base to stuff his tracks up his A**. I see that it’s samo samo nowadays. Hope the worms enjoy his xtian meat!!!!

Funny, I’m only 53, but I haven’t met anybody that wasn’t a little bit of all of those. Have you? I’ll cop — I’m all of ‘em at one time or another, depending on the subject.

Sometimes I think our only distinguishing and lasting advantage over conservatives is our propensity for introspection. The stoicism borne from the inability to question one’s self is a common thread through injustice, poverty, religion, and conservatism, and will be the conservatives’ undoing in the end.

They define themselves as the dinosaurs; they’re proud of it. Their extinction is inevitable, hence their current panic.

When the emporer of Rome converted to Christianity he turned Christianity into a state religion. As a result 23,000 Romans who refused to convert to Chrisitanity were slaughtered in the streets. This is the birth of Christianity.

From that point on the Christians rewrote history to make it look like they were persecuted. The rewrote history to cover the blood on their hands.

I propose the following Constitution Amendment

The new amendment of the Constitution says the United States is now a Secular Nation. Any and all references to any religion or the bible or the 10 commandments are to be removed from all government buildings. There will be no praying or religious services of any kind on any government property. There will be no religion taught in any public or government schools and “intelligent design” will not be taught, only scientific facts. There will be no invocations at any government meetings at any level. No religious icons are allowed in any branch of the government. The national day of prayer will be abolished; “in god we trust” will be removed from all currency and “under god” will be removed from the pledge of allegiance. This amendment clarifies once and for all that there is 100% separation of State and church. There are no exceptions. The United States government is not a Christian Nation and this amendment states the government is not in the business of religion and is and will remain 100% secular.

In many cities, Sunday WAS mandated to be the Sabbath and at least commercial activity was forbidden. While hospitals could be open, for example, no stores could. This was at least into the early 1950s. This was especially hard on religious Jews who were forbidden to work on Saturday.

This was fairly universal, especially in the South, but as things changed it grew into a patchwork of rules.

I remember one large store which was on the border between Miami and El Portal. Miami still had and enforced the law. So the owners who wanted to operate on Sunday soon figured out that they could open and only do business, ie collect money at the back door register. People could exit the back door into El Portal, a small separate town.

The publicity surrounding this “brazen behavior” helped get the law thrown out in Miami.

A civilian commander-in-chief (George W. Bush) got our military into this religious mess, so a patriotic American citizen (like myself, who served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War) would expect that his successor as civilian commander-in-chief (Barack Obama) would clean up the religious mess in our military left him by his arch-conservative predecessor.

    Except there is one problem.

President Obama keeps being falsely accused of being a Muslim, although he is a Christian, thus making it near impossible (based on this right-wing lie) for him to crack down on the fundamentalist “Christian” military commanders, court-martialing them for violating their solemn oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the separation of church and state (or church and the military), like I experienced almost 40 years ago when U.S. commanders actually honored their oath and didn’t try to force their religious beliefs on anyone.

The Pentagon chiefs could crack down on these religious fanatic anti-Constitution commanders, maybe court-martialing a few of them to set an example, but then these “Christian” commanders would show up on Faux News screaming that they were discriminated against on orders of President Obama, the “Muslim.” Of course, there are still a whole lot of U.S. military personnel, both officers and enlisted, who don’t ram their religion down the throats of those serving alongside them, but it is the few bad apples that make the most noise.

So, President Obama is cornered again…damned if he does anything, damned if he doesn’t…and all because right-wingers resorted to spreading another lie based on hatred. Right-wingers malign ACORN falsey. They malign Shirley Sherrod falsely. They malign President Obama falsely. They malign the Sufi imam of the proposed cultural center in NYC falsely.

And all this time I thought the Prince of Lies was a fable. Nope, the Prince of Lies is a Republican.

As a reformed theology lecturer & guest speaker, -one of the PARAMOUNT aspects of genuine Christianity (as opposed to counterfeit-versions that use coercion), the decision to obey the gospel must be completely free-will. Although I have great concern for my fellow man & his eternal condition, –principles of free-will MUST be observed or the faith is no better than other coercive cults & sects. As a reformed theologian, -I constantly lock horns with the likes of giant denominational leaders & TV evangelists who use some of the worst forms of coercion I’ve ever seen -especially on gender-issues & attraction. And I find their musical mouthpieces just as offensive. In legal terms: Christianity is like contract law: Offer, acceptance & consideration. If free-will is not the primary component, -then the matter becomes one of fraud and where the message is delivered with fraud -there is NO genuine proselytism. For more about the men I work with, -G00GLE the global: g0ys (spelled w. a zer0) men’s movement.
