Republicans are going to be embarrassed at the way they’ve opposed a mosque — known as Cordoba House or Park51 — that’s planned near Ground Zero, according to one conservative host.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough told Republicans Monday that they should “speak out against Newt Gingrich and the voices of hate.” While he was at it, Scarborough threatened to leave the GOP for a party “that actually believes in small government.”

Last week, Gingrich compared supporters of the mosque to Nazis. Appearing on Fox & Friends, Gingrich said, “Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington.”

Prior to that, Gingrich argued that the mosque shouldn’t be built near Ground Zero until churches and synagogues are allowed in Saudi Arabia.

“This is demagoguery of the first order,” Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, said Monday. “And people in the Republican Party need to separate themselves from these voices.”

“And I talk to you, my Republican brethren,” he said into the camera. “I don’t know how much longer you’ll be my brethren. I’ll be honest. I’m looking for a conservative party that actually believes in small government and not engaging in Wilsonian wars but that’s another discussion.”

“I’m just talking, you know, as a friend,” Scarborough continued. “I promise you this. You’re going to be embarrassed. You’re going to look back two, three, four years from now and this is going to be dark blot on your record if you don’t speak out against New Gingrich and the voices of hate.”

“This is an embarrassment and you need to speak out against it,” he said.

Opponents of the mosque protested in lower Manhattan Sunday. Daisy Khan, the wife of the controversial imam backing the Islamic center, said Sunday that opposition was “like a metastasized anti-Semitism.”

MSNBC’s Willie Geist told Scarborough that the opposition is proof that anti-Muslim sentiment is worse now than after Sept. 11, 2001.

“It shows us that we are probably farther backward that we were maybe even nine years ago in our interfaith relations,” said Geist.

This video is from MSNBC’s Morning Joe, broadcast Aug. 23, 2010.

    Republicans don’t embarrass.

  • Anonymous

they have already let them win.

  • Anonymous

holy crap! an intelligent sane republican?

  • Anonymous

This has all been ginned up by the far right and the evangelicals in the Repub and Tea parties. Just a cause to bind the villagers together and everyone gets sucked in to these distractions. This way, maybe no one will notice the Repubs want to increase the deficit by renewing the tax cuts for the rich and oh that’s right absolutely no constructive ideas to help the economy they ruined. How about we get back to the important stuff? And Joe; I wish you would have been embarrassed way before now.

  • Anonymous

Republicans are just naturally embarrassing. They cannot help it.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know what party that will be. The republicans are mostly racist, intolerant and war mongers. The tea party is the ultra right wing of the republican party and the democratic party won’t fight for what supposedly believe in, spending more time trying to NOT be labeled as liberals.

  • Anonymous

So, where does Joe think he’s going to go after he abandons the GOP? The Koch funded Tea Party?

  • Anonymous

Giest is not only right about going backward with interfaith realations. We have gone backwards as a nation period . That is not because of Newt and the religious hateful right Good ole morning blow Joe and the Repuke party and 30 years of trickle down econmics . If it were up to the morning blow Joe and the puke party we would all working for a bowl of Mush and fighting for a spot under a bridge..THESE PEOPLE SUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But Joe, the voices of hate claim they’re speaking for gawd. Reagan started this christian crap with his self-proclaimed *born again* status. He spawned the Moral Majority. Then Pappy Bush came along and threw open the GOP’s doors and kissed christian butts for their votes. Now the GOPs want to move away from these holy asses, but if they do the party will split.

I could have told them – and did tell my GOP friends (with whom I have successfully lost contact) that they would regret this inclusion of the christian right. I even explained why, how and what they would do – things that would surely bite my own friends’ butts someday.

When you get in bed with the devil, you go to hell, GOPs.

  • Anonymous

Joe is just now seeing the racism, bigotry and xenophobia in the GOP? Southern Strategy? State’s rights? Reagan kicked off his presidential campaign where? Apparently, Joe didn’t get his racism decoder ring.

I remember that bu$h said we weren’t at war with Islam, and that Islam was a religion of peace. Why isn’t he on the air at domestic terist command center, FAUXNOOZ?

  • Anonymous

He’s dead wrong when he says: “You’re going to look back two, three, four years from now and this is going to be dark blot on your record if you don’t speak out against New Gingrich and the voices of hate.”

Republicans sell fear – their base is motivated by this stuff.

Newt is all about the Constitution, The Bill of Rights and freedom in America…… That is, he is all about his own myopic vision of those things. In Newt’s world, your freedom is the cornerstone, but only if he approves of who you are and what you believe.

If the community center is prevented from being built then the terrorists have won. They showed we do not stand for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly. Only until we stand for these things will we have shown the enemy they have lost, because Muslims around the world will see that we mean what we say when we say we are a nation of freedom.

As of now the Republicans are in line with the Taliban way of doing things giving the talibans the bragging rights to say, “See Americans wants to be like us, a people of intolerance.”

  • Anonymous

This whole ginned up media attack on the community center is a veiled (straw dog) attack on President Obama. It is so obvious it’s sad. So the gay marriage thing not working this time, and illegal immigrants and the Arizona law is stale now, they pony out the community center for Muslim and lie about it being a mosque when it isn’t. We have high unemployment, schools and communities are struggling but the corporate media would rather gin up a bogus story and use it to make people mad at the President. American Conservatives = American Psychos

  • Anonymous

I hate to break it to you, but the terrorists won a long time ago.

How do I handle this issue?

If I’m talking to a Catholic, I say “No Cathedrals should be allowed near schools, ’cause all Catholics are pedophiles, or are contributing to or defending it.”

If I’m talking to a Jew, I say that no synagogues should be built near banks, ’cause it just rubs it in everyone’s face that Zionists control the world economy, and all Jews are in on the scheme.

Or “Mormons are all polygamists,” or “all Baptists are snake-handlers.” You get the idea.

When a white guy says “…but Muslims killed 3000 people on 9/11,” I say “Well, you killed ten million American Indians.”

The insanity of holding any large group responsible for individual bad acts of a few members of the group in the past is easy to demonstrate and palpable when put in such stark terms.

Apparently it’s easier to feel sympathetic for the cult of Islam if you’re not one of the groups they target for beheading. As one of the horrible people with a gay agenda I will oppose religious zealots at every turn, whether they be catholic, mormon, wiccan, or from the cult of Islam. I will also retract my support for any Democratic candidates supporting the mosque or Islam in any way, and a large part of the LGBT crowd will oppose their intolerance and bigotry.
Islam is oppression, ask a gay man or one of the slaves in Africa (or gulf states) that these people oppress.

Islam is hate, just like the KKK, and I don’t tolerate their intolerance, I’m certainly not going to put up with these zealots parading their hate around and calling it a religion. Seeing the “lefties” argue “freedom of religion” is hysterically absurd considering their track record of tearing down every religion in this country, and here they are defending the relics of an archaic past. Islam is hate, oppression, slavery, and homophobia all in one neat little package with the poor taste to call itself the “Religion of Peace”.

Bottom Line: The “mosque outreach” backlash probably wouldn’t be this harsh if they were tolerant of others, or had done some outreach since 911…….apparently they spent the last ten years doing very little “outreach” and opted to hunt Danish cartoonists and their grandkids when they’re not boycotting facebook and attempting to trample the free speech rights of anyone who dared to draw Mohammed. Religion of Peace indeed!

I’m drawing Mo TWICE today! HA HA HA!

Nice try at applying those “Rules for Radicals” but but but, how do you explain the liberal gays opposed to the cult of Islam?!

Could it be the the group targeted for beheading has been tricked by the republicans, or is it more likely that the cult of Islam is a hate group and gays oppose them based on their intolerance and bigotry?

    That’s what I thought!

I appreciate the sanity from Joe, I consider him the least odious of the Republican voices. Yes, I know that betrays my bias.

I find it interesting that he simultaneously has to lump in some liberals as being hateful but the only dissent I’ve heard from the Left is that they feel it’s their Constitutional right but that it’s a bad choice [personally I couldn't care less if they build it there].
However, he praises Karen Hughes for taking the same basic position as those of the dissenting Liberals.

Perhaps I’m wrong. i’d love to hear about any liberals who are as hateful as the demagogues on the Right. They’d equally share my distain.

I used to think that the real Conservative base loved the Constitution except for the parts that supported people/positions they hated. I now suspect they hate the constitution except for the parts that benefit them.

I agree that all religions are delusional, and Islam does have a nasty reputation for imposing religious law on the societies in which it is dominant. That said, the people building the Islamic cultural center have every right to put it where they want it, whether it’s four blocks down or across the street. This whole Ground-Zero-is-a-shrine bit is getting old. The sooner we put up some buildings there and move on the better. It’s a crime scene, nothing more.

It’s pretty amusing that Scarborough says this would all be better under Bush because republicans don’t gin up hate when a Bush is president. So, we need to elect the leaders of the hatemongers just to keep the hatemongerers from hatemongering. This is nuts.

if we oppose the Muslim community center, the 9/11 terrorists win because we expose our self to the world as the bigoted country we are, and one that clearly does not believe in the constitution and first amendment freedoms. The Bush White House, at a MINIMUM, allowed the attacks to go on well before September 11. And now, Gingrich, Palin, and even Senator Reid are attempting to reframe the US not only as being completely victimized by “terrorists” whose identities were never confirmed by the FBI, but they also imply that Osama bin Laden was directly or even indirectly involved in the plot, which has NEVER been alleged by the FBI. Further, the notion that a sight two blocks away from the demolition of the buildings is somehow “hallowed ground” is only yet another attempt to polarize the citizenry. It’s one manipulation after another that keeps the corporatists in charge.

That is just your ignorance talking. Yeah, no atrocities have ever been committed in the name of Christianity. You do a lot of assuming rather than learning. And to label all followers of Islam with the Islamic terrorists defines ignorance. I would no sooner label all Christians sick and twisted like the terrorist, Timothy McVeigh because he considered himself a Christian.

Listen, religion can be used for good as a source of comfort, guidance, and community outreach. But religion is all used for evil as a source for suppression, intolerance, and greed. We can see that here in our own country with the actions of the Christian right that mirrors the kind of intolerance we see in some Muslim countries.

But when you allow yourself to let the fear and hate mongering undermine your ability to critically and rationally make judgments, you will only compound that fear and hate. Humanity will not survive if we allow the fear and hate to rule.

Ah religion – the ultimate wedge issue. Those who wear theirs on their sleeves deserve all the public derision they get. Call it anti-whatever you want. They are not victims, they’re provocateurs hiding behind and using the suffering of others for their own vanity and self-promotion in the name of causes that have no place in this country’s governance or decision making.

If freedom of religion gives them the right to poke me in the eye with it, then I have a right to poke them back. Like all freedoms in America, it extends only so far as it does not diminish mine and when they, of any faith, take over the public debate to promote their religion, or its veiled group-causes, in this secular democracy, then my participation and freedom is diminished. I have not sacrificed for and supported a theocracy of one or multiple religions, I’ve done that for freedom and equality of all citizens regardless of blah blah blah.

If Jews don’t want to be stigmatized as a group, let them stand up and denounce their orthodox brethren who care more for a foreign nation that the one that shelters, protects and gives them all the privileges of citizenship. If Muslims don’t want the same, let them stand up and condemn their extremist brethren who advocate mortal brutality for their own and others in the name of Allah. And Catholics can do the same for their hierarchy that seeks political power while betraying the deepest trusts of their most trusting children in the most depraved way. And Protestants, their fundamentalist wing-nut factions from the KKK to their evangelical TV-thumping politico wannabes. Buddhist extremists at least keep their agenda of American dominance to themselves, if they have one, which suits me fine. Until they do that, they are all the enemies of secular democracy and should be treated accordingly by all political parties. Shout them down. Political parties that support or exploit such things should be shunned.

Supposed moderates of those faiths simply tsk tsk outbursts of their extremist factions, then go back to supporting elected officials that promote laws that impose their articles of faith on all. Tolerance of such crap is weakness, not virtue or strength, and continuing along the path we are one will reduce us to waring tribes no better than the primitive societies we delight in demeaning. Wedge is as wedge does.

    I can’t believe I can agree with Joe Scarborough. I feel like I’m in an alter universe. He is right about the Mosque though and the republicans are looking like right wing radicals no different than the terrorists and the Muslim radicals. They are all nuts. The people who are promoting this hatred are doing it for political reasons. If the republicans can create a common enemy to hate they are easier to control and they don’t have to face the fact they have no political platform to stand on. The Tim pawlenty’s, Newt’s and the rest of the presidential hopefuls have long ago sold their souls to the tea party’s for their blind ambitions. The instigators are just trying to stir up crap {limbaugh, beck etc} to make money off the idiot republicans. I think Joe is the only sane republican left. {I said sane not necessarily smart}

The republican elite will not have it if it does not suit their ends in regaining power for the corporate thieves that fund their existence. Although the bought and paid for blue dog members of the Democratic party that have run interference for these criminals are equally to blame. I’m however certain that their are fewer useful idiots available for manipulation than those with reasonable critical thinking skills. The Republicans weren’t always like this. They used to have backbone. They were the first to condemn the military-industrial complex. Their party went downhill when they invited in the “Dixiecrats”, southern democrats that hated racial equality. Since Abe Lincoln was a Republican, they used to insist they were Democrats. Things have changed. Perhaps the real Republicans will have to split off to form a rival conservative party. Better yet, they’ll find their backbones and stop the bastards from grabbing all the headlines.

It’s not just Gingrich, but Pamela Geller, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Rush Druggaddict Limbaugh, and quite a few other Republicans, as well as a growing number of Democrats, who keep slandering this imam and his wife to millions of people across the country and globe, making hate-filled, outrageous comparisons, and repeatedly mislabeling a cultural center as a “mosque” and claiming it’s on the “sacred” and “hallowed” land of “Ground Zero,” the WTC worksite/gravesite, when it’s TWO BLOCKS AWAY, in a former clothing store, and there are two mosques closer to the open hole of what was the WTC towers and plaza.

Just as guilty, though, are the rest of the media, who refuse to tell the truth, call out the liars and hatemongers, and are hoping this deranged furor puts the GOP in office and furthers the US’s neocon wars in the Middle East. It’s beyond sickening.

a different question, same scenario, is an outlaw motorcycle club a criminal organization, or a legitimate organization with a few bad apples? the correct answer, as i see it is that by allowing the bad apples to operate as obvious club members they have become a criminal organization. same reasoning applies to tea party members wrt racism.

I’m not a republican but as of late, I’ve found some comfort in the words of Eisenhower. Who would be expelled from the republican party today for his views. A good republican is no longer welcomed in the republican party. They are being tossed out like yesterdays garbage. It is a very sad day for real republicans.

I think that Scarborough knows that this is bad and he can’t stand seeing these crazies control the party like they do now. The leader of the republican party isn’t Boehner or Steele or McCain, it’s the Glen Becks, the Rush Lushball, the Michelle Malkins, the Sarah Palins and their cheerleader Fox news. The republican party doesn’t like being controlled by this hard right, but they have no choice because after the thumping they took at the election everybody was looking around saying “what happened”. Then they decided to use these crazies to stop Obama’s healthplan and it emboldened the mob enough to know that we are in power. The republicans have no control anymore over their people. You know it’s crazy when they attack and go after hispanics over immigration (the fastest growing minority/majority in the nation), you know it’s crazy they go after and blame all of Islam over 19 individuals essentially making war with over 1 billion people.

If republicans don’t get off this boat, they may not get back into power for decades to come.

We hate homosexuality NOT the homosexuals. (it is a terrible life reducing life style – and that’s scientifically verified)
We hate murder, NOT the murderers.

Why do you think he gave them BILLIONS of the stimulus money?
Reread what Joe said ! He wants small government.
There is not one single liberal or Dem who does…not one.
    But back to islam:
I have the koran and at least a dozen books on it.
I KNOW what the thing actually says (not the watered down version the liars spread around.
Could one of you mindless lefties please explain how you can support
*in any degree* a religion that specifically demands the suppression of women rights?
That no only advocates, but demands, the acts of deceit and murder to promote it’s supremacy (oh yes it does…literally). There are sooooo many more things it does and promotes that are diametrically opposed to what liberals CLAIM to believe and advocate. You guys fight and protest against Glenn Beck at the Lincoln Memorial and he repeatedly says we must never resort to violence. He advocates freedom from oppression. Just why isn’t it OK to oppose islam if it’s good to oppose Beck? Just what do you guys actually believe?

Im a conservative, and your an embarrassment mitch. Someones religious views are not for me to judge. It is right ALL Americans have. By your comment you apparently belong to some new Glenn Beck religion im guessing? I personally don’t like the fact Becks been programming his followers to think Islam is going to forcefully invade America and make us worship Islam or die. My mom suffers from the same effects of being informed by Glenn and his Faux news buddies. Ironically enough these are the same people who have been the main cheerleaders for perpetual war in the middle east (of course there is no connection between waning support for the war and this latest issue). But hey that’s your right and you should be allowed to worship Glenn Beck all you want as long as it doesn’t prevent someone else from practicing whatever religious views they wish.

Im glad youve done so much research into the “koran” as you spelled it. It is actually the Qur’an. Perhaps you read and speak Arabic so this next fact will be of no news to you.

Translation of the Qur’an has always been a problematic and difficult issue. Since Islam regards the Qur’an as miraculous and inimitable (i’jaz al-Qur’an), many argue that the Qur’anic text cannot be reproduced in another language or form.[83] Furthermore, an Arabic word may have a range of meanings depending on the context, making an accurate translation even more difficult.

Im sure all the books you have on it are all very well written with no hidden agenda whatsoever from the authors. Fair and balanced discussions just like your religion! Perhaps instead of searching for reasons to support your hate of Islam you should research how to be a better Christian or Foxian whatever you guys are calling it.

I would like to hear or read this sura (thats a verse from the Qur’an fyi)”That no only advocates, but demands, the acts of deceit and murder to promote it’s supremacy”
(oh yes it does…literally). ” Thats news to me and something I havent come accross yet. Even a link to where this fact can be verified would be appreciated. Preferably not to a Fox news transcript. Thanks for representing conservatives, Christians and all of America so well. Stay classy.

    Rex,
I’d think you’d be more embarrassed by your pseudo-intellectual approach to my post. It’s sort of pathetic. You like all the other leftards engage in baseless accusations against Beck and the right in general.
You say Beck is all about hate speech and despite his being on the air for 5 HOURS a day you have no audio clips of him spewing hate? WOW that’s just sad!
Is it that there are none, or is it that you, like almost every other lefty, don’t have the personal or intellectual integrity to actually listen to him? I’m sure both of these are true. I’ll bet Beck has said 30 times on his TV show alone, that the moslems should be able to worship and built as they choose.
I DARE YOU to find a single contradictory remark by him!
I CHALLENGE YOU, you liar, to find a single example of Beck suggesting islam is planing to invade us. Lastly,
I DARE YOU to find a single example of FOX news cheerleading the war! (Now pay attn rexy, FOX has News, Entertainment, and Opinion shows. So lets not get confused and lie about the balance and honesty of their news programming.

About the Koran (Qur’an for you rexy): Is this the best you could do? Coldn’t you find any grammar eerrors to help you pretend you are really smarter than me??? Well sorry pal but “Koran” is an accepted spelling for their hate filled tome.
(BTW I also don’t spell JESUS as YESHUA
(Just so you know I am being fair to everyone…LOL)
And it is not a single sura that instructs the use of deception and murder.
And why in the world would I bother doing your research for you?
You don’t have the honor to even verify your idiotic accusations about Beck.
If I did supply the proof you’d just find one of the islamic revisionist liars to suggest that ‘jihad’ only means an internal struggle to become a better person” or another of their lies. If you are so lazy or deluded that you actually don’t know that the koran advocated deception then you are already in the bag son. You name is in their win column, another useful idiot.
And BTW, I have traveled extensively in moslem countries, from Turkey to Indonesia. I have been in their mosques and seen first had the abysmal slavery that islam engenders. I was behind both the iron and bamboo ‘curtains’ and neither was as bleak and desolate as islam. I have also befriended and stayed in the homes of moslems. I have a close personal friend who was trained by Hezbollah with his brother in Leb. And I have heard plenty of them tell the truth about the koran.

I completely understand your ignorance of the truth about islam and the koran.
And I can only assume you imagine the Crusades were just as Monty Python taught them, clueless to the decades of murder the moslems had brought upon the Christians and Jews before they started. Ignorance is fine, it can be fixed if your honest enough. However the penchant for dishonesty you display indicates there is little hope of you ‘manning up” and doing the right thing.

    As Churchill said:
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
.. No stronger force retarding civilization exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science – the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.” — Sir Winston Churchill

    ***NOW ON THE OTHER HAND***

Sometimes this wisdom is spoken from the mouth of the most unlikely sources, like King Nebuchadnezzar which we see in Scripture, and in recent times, by Jiang Zemin, the former leader of Communist China. Former Time correspondent, David Aikman interviewed the retiring head of state in Communist China in 2002 and asked what Zemin wished for in regard to China’s future. Zemin’s response shocked Aikman, and much of the world, when he replied:

“I would like for my country to become a Christian nation.” (Aikman, David. “A Report on Christianity in China: A Conversation With David Aikman.” Speech at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, September 26, 2002.)

When asked “Why?” Zemin’s response was an amazing revelation. He explained how a panel of Chinese scholars had spent twenty years studying why China continually lagged behind the West in science, industry, and culture. After considering every possible explanation, they concluded that it was the religious heritage of the West that had allowed it to reach such heights. The statement of these Chinese scholars was:

“One of the things we were asked to do was look into what accounted for the success, in fact, the pre-eminence of the West all over the world. We studied everything we could from the historical, political, economic, and cultural perspective. At first, we thought it was because of a more powerful military. Then we thought it was because you had the best political system. Next we focused on your economic systems. But in the past 20 years we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. This is why the West is powerful. The Christian moral foundation of the social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don’t have any doubt about this.” (Quoted from Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is Changing the Global Balance of Power, by David Aikman.)

First of all I need to apologize because I digressed from my original point. It isn’t my place or intent to defend or attack anyones religion. Nor is it my intention to attack anyone personally.

THE POINT (pay attention now mitchy)…….

Americans are allowed to practice whatever religion they choose. American Muslims are allowed this right. Whatever your personal views on THEIR religion is irrelevant. This is private property and American Muslims are peaceful.

Im not going to post any links demonizing your god Glenn Beck because as you put it your “already in the bag”. The scariest part about propaganda in America is that most people don’t even realize it is propaganda.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

“Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position.

As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of political warfare.”

    Types of propaganda..

“Defining propaganda has always been a problem. The main difficulties have involved differentiating propaganda from other types of persuasion, and avoiding an “if they do it then that’s propaganda, while if we do it then that’s information and education” biased approach. Garth Jowett and Victoria O’Donnell have provided a concise, workable definition of the term: “Propaganda is the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist.”[4] More comprehensive is the description by Richard Alan Nelson: “Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that attempts to influence the emotions, attitudes, opinions, and actions of specified target audiences for ideological, political or commercial purposes through the controlled transmission of one-sided messages (which may or may not be factual) via mass and direct media channels. A propaganda organization employs propagandists who engage in propagandism—the applied creation and distribution of such forms of persuasion.”[5]

Both definitions focus on the communicative process involved — more precisely, on the purpose of the process, and allow “propaganda” to be considered objectively and then interpreted as positive or negative behavior depending on the perspective of the viewer or listener.”

    Techniques

Common media for transmitting propaganda messages include news reports, government reports, historical revision, junk science, books, leaflets, movies, radio, television, and posters. Less common nowadays are letterpost envelopes examples of which of survive from the time of the American Civil War. (Connecticut Historical Society; Civil War Collections; Covers.) In principle any thing that appears on a poster can be produced on a reduced scale on a pocket-style envelope with corresponding proportions to the poster. The case of radio and television, propaganda can exist on news, current-affairs or talk-show segments, as advertising or public-service announce “spots” or as long-running advertorials. Propaganda campaigns often follow a strategic transmission pattern to indoctrinate the target group. This may begin with a simple transmission such as a leaflet dropped from a plane or an advertisement. Generally these messages will contain directions on how to obtain more information, via a web site, hot line, radio program, et cetera (as it is seen also for selling purposes among other goals). The strategy intends to initiate the individual from information recipient to information seeker through reinforcement, and then from information seeker to opinion leader through indoctrination.

A number of techniques based in social psychological research are used to generate propaganda. Many of these same techniques can be found under logical fallacies, since propagandists use arguments that, while sometimes convincing, are not necessarily valid.

Some time has been spent analyzing the means by which the propaganda messages are transmitted. That work is important but it is clear that information dissemination strategies become propaganda strategies only when coupled with propagandistic messages. Identifying these messages is a necessary prerequisite to study the methods by which those messages are spread. Below are a number of techniques for generating propaganda:

    Ad hominem
A Latin phrase that has come to mean attacking one’s opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments.

    Ad nauseam
This argument approach uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach works best when media sources are limited or controlled by the propagator.

    Appeal to fear
Appeals to fear and seeks to build support by instilling anxieties and panic in the general population, for example, Joseph Goebbels exploited Theodore Kaufman’s Germany Must Perish! to claim that the Allies sought the extermination of the German people.

    Appeal to prejudice
Using loaded or emotive terms to attach value or moral goodness to believing the proposition. Used in biased or misleading ways.

    Disinformation
The creation or deletion of information from public records, in the purpose of making a false record of an event or the actions of a person or organization, including outright forgery of photographs, motion pictures, broadcasts, and sound recordings as well as printed documents.

    Managing the news
According to Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels “The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”[10] This idea is consistent with the principle of classical conditioning as well as the idea of “Staying on Message.”

    Milieu control
An attempt to control the social environment and ideas through the use of social pressure

Name-calling (you know like attaching tard to the end of someones political)
Propagandists use the name-calling technique to incite fears and arouse prejudices in their hearers in the intent that the bad names will cause hearers to construct a negative opinion about a group or set of beliefs or ideas that the propagandist would wish hearers to denounce. The method is intended to provoke conclusions about a matter apart from impartial examinations of facts. Name-calling is thus a substitute for rational, fact-based arguments against the an idea or belief on its own merits.[11]

Obtain disapproval or Reductio ad Hitlerum (A fox news favorite)

This technique is used to persuade a target audience to disapprove of an action or idea by suggesting that the idea is popular with groups hated, feared, or held in contempt by the target audience. Thus if a group that supports a certain policy is led to believe that undesirable, subversive, or contemptible people support the same policy, then the members of the group may decide to change their original position. This is a form of bad logic, where a is said to include X, and b is said to include X, therefore, a = b.

    Quotes out of context
Selectively editing quotes to change meanings—political documentaries designed to discredit an opponent or an opposing political viewpoint often make use of this technique.

    Red herring
Presenting data or issues that, while compelling, are irrelevant to the argument at hand, and then claiming that it validates the argument.

    Scapegoating
Assigning blame to an individual or group, thus alleviating feelings of guilt from responsible parties and/or distracting attention from the need to fix the problem for which blame is being assigned.

    Slogans
A slogan is a brief, striking phrase that may include labeling and stereotyping. Although slogans may be enlisted to support reasoned ideas, in practice they tend to act only as emotional appeals. Opponents of the US’s invasion and occupation of Iraq use the slogan “blood for oil” to suggest that the invasion and its human losses was done to access Iraq’s oil riches. On the other hand, supporters who argue that the US should continue to fight in Iraq use the slogan “cut and run” to suggest that it would be cowardly or weak to withdraw from Iraq.

    Stereotyping
This technique attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable. For instance, reporting on a foreign country or social group may focus on the stereotypical traits that the reader expects, even though they are far from being representative of the whole country or group; such reporting often focuses on the anecdotal. In graphic propaganda, including war posters, this might include portraying enemies with stereotyped racial features.

    Straw man
A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent’s position. To “attack a straw man” is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by substituting a superficially similar proposition (the “straw man”), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

    Testimonial
Testimonials are quotations, in or out of context, especially cited to support or reject a given policy, action, program, or personality. The reputation or the role (expert, respected public figure, etc.) of the individual giving the statement is exploited. The testimonial places the official sanction of a respected person or authority on a propaganda message. This is done in an effort to cause the target audience to identify itself with the authority or to accept the authority’s opinions and beliefs as its own.

“The Bulgarian Martyresses”, 1877 painting by the Russian painter Konstantin Makovsky depicting the rape of Bulgarian women by Ottoman troops during the suppression of the April Uprising a year earlier, served to mobilise public support for the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) waged with the proclaimed aim of liberating the Bulgarians.

    Third party technique
Works on the principle that people are more willing to accept an argument from a seemingly independent source of information than from someone with a stake in the outcome. It is a marketing strategy commonly employed by Public Relations (PR) firms, that involves placing a premeditated message in the “mouth of the media.” Third party technique can take many forms, ranging from the hiring of journalists to report the organization in a favorable light, to using scientists within the organization to present their perhaps prejudicial findings to the public. Frequently astroturf groups or front groups are used to deliver the message.

It is not a religion, it is hate, pure and simple and full of those that will lie to your face and stab you in the back.
We should burn all their hate literature, send them back to the deserts and destroy their temples of hate.
These same people threaten violent retaliation if you burn their hate literature.
Grow up, defend your home and country while you can.

If they don’t build the mosque, they will still be there. How are you going to handle that one, Sparky?

  • Anonymous

The muslims define Islam as obeying the god of Abraham… so to them, when you say this, you are saying… ” I HATE OBEYING GOD “… no wonder some of them dislike you .

that’s ok, you’re just uneducated and hate what you don’t understand…..

Not quite, lev. and deut. are 100x worse than quran, which says things like “God does not love aggressors (in warfare)”.

Too much ignorance = hate in you!

  • elmer fudd

Agree, he’s exhibiting too much common sense to labelled a Conservative!!!

  • Mr_Natural

Your confusion is understandable. None of us is accustomed to an intelligent, educated conservative like Joe Scarborough.

    >>
The only way conservatives can get into power is to scare the hell out of everyone.
    <<
…like Cheney-Bush, drumming up support to invade Iraq: “Saddam Hussein has WMDs!! He’s evil!! And he’s coming to get us!!”

Is that what you’re calling a Liberal, then?

  • http://real-conservative-thought.blogspot.com/ John Rivera

nellpost & MadamDeb, you 2 are the ignorant one. You’re playing right into the hands of the enemy and don’t even know it!

Islam has one goal and that is to convert or kill anyone that is not a Muslim. When will you idiots get that thru your thick sculls?
