Five soldiers accused of killing civilians in Afghanistan are now facing additional charges of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder — a plot that allegedly began when one soldier discussed how easy it would be to “toss a grenade” at Afghan civilians, The Seattle Times reported Wednesday.

The five soldiers were charged with murder in June for the deaths of three Afghan civilians in Kandahar Province this year. According to charging summaries newly released by the Army, additional allegations of conspiracy have since been filed against those soldiers, and seven others have been charged in connection with the conspiracy or with attempting to cover it up.

Some platoon members told investigators that Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs began joking with other soldiers last December about how easy it would be to “toss a grenade” at Afghan civilians and kill them, the newspaper said. One soldier responded that it was a stupid idea, and another believed Gibbs was “feeling out the platoon.”

But eventually, Gibbs formed what one called a “kill team” to randomly execute Afghan civilians while on patrol, the documents said. No motive was discussed. Gibbs has denied any involvement in the killings.

I predict that none of these soldiers will be punished. You can be sure that the way soldiers are trained–as detailed in a recent article in The Nation magazine–comes from higher up, and explains much of the criminal behavior of “our troops.” You can also be sure that none of the higher-ups will be named–much less, disciplined or restrained.

HEY, these guys were trained with tax payer money we borrowed from China to be
professional killers and we gave them the best tools money could buy….so this is
    a big surprise?????

But this isn’t fueling the insurgency, the Afghan withdrawal date is. General James Conway’s comments just keep getting more and more absurd.

  • Anonymous

wow…..another non-story……nobody will get more than a slap on the ass…….oh yeah…..their benefits might be taken away as well……

  • Anonymous

They won’t do time; all is forgiven!
Then they will all get good jobs with LAPD.

It can’t be allowed to look like our army has terrorists in it. They will get off as a matter of good PR for the American military.

Putting a hooligan in uniform does not make him a soldier.

..when playing CounterStrike blurs the lines of reality and thinking in a war…

Your tax dollars at work. Makes you feel pretty good about being an American, doesn’t it? Get out of that hell hole before they seal the borders from the inside!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000840836253 Vajid Ali

That hellhole was doing alright before the ‘civilised first world spreaders of freedom’ arrived. The US troops are doing this and ppl have the nerve to call iraq a hell hole…just remember who turned it into that. America is now just as morally bankrupt as the USSR Nazi germany etc.

Im sure that there are a hell of alot of good people in the USA but they let this happen

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

Well…if this is true…thats about as horrifying as conduct unbecoming can get. In my heart, I hope they get the harshest possible punishment available if found guilty, because these are very likely sociopaths with no ability to discriminate between right and wrong…but the cynic in me knows that a wall of silence stands between them and justice, and the military justice system is so politically compromised that it no longer functions as anything but a PR department. I fear we have bred and trained a generation of uber-monsters…and someday soon they will be home and living next us.

American soldiers plotting to murder Afghans? Isn’t that what they are sent there to do in the first place? The United States government has thousands of people spending billions of dollars and countless hours plotting to murder people in dozens of countries worldwide. This is the mission of the “Defense Department.”

  • Anonymous

“these are very likely sociopaths with no ability to discriminate between right and wrong”

This is precisely what makes them “good soldiers”

  • David R Velasquez

You’re absolutely right. What they did was the most depraved of ideas and further illustrates the pointlessness of the mission there. And how the futility and frustration there is breeding deep resentment in the personnel. The VA is doing a totally inadequate job in dealing with all the stress or PTSD cases. The fact that military suicides are so high must be indicative of some major form of malaise spreading there.

Still the most toxic aspect to those serving over there is the moral dissonance at the heart whole of the US defense strategy.

Is there any surprize that this doesn’t happen more often?

  • Zenzizenzizenzic

Haven’t I read something about gang members in the military?

  • Anonymous

Yep, “Be All That You Can Be!”

  • Anonymous

A few good men indeed. What a disgrace to the uniform. They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of military law.

  • Anonymous

    sad but true

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Kadr will get a tougher sentence than any of these clowns and the “evidence” against him is circumstantial at best and his confessions coerced by torture.

  • Rush Goofbaugh

it’s the same conversation Bush had with Cheney…. wouldn’t it be easy to fool the american people and murder millions of __________________.

  • Rush Goofbaugh

Who needs to be prosecuted are the (christian war criminals) that sent them there in the first place. I won’t hold my breath…………

  • Rush Goofbaugh

Calley didn’t spend much time in jail… and the christian war criminals that sent him there spent none. Now he is sorry…. to late for the dead and their families. But it’s not to late for those war criminals that sent them there to go to jail. War crimes are forever.

And yet my many hours of playing counter strike have not compelled me to kill anyone yet. But what makes me most sad is how we could be using the defense department and our military for the betterment of our country as well as providing services to people in need throughout the world. Not only would the soldiers be learning to be humanitarians instead of killers but our perception around the world would be lifted by these good deeds. The greatest power our country had was when many people around the world wanted to be like us.

  • SuccumbingToSanity

“The greatest power our country had was when many people around the world wanted to be like us. ”

Kim Jong-Il probably has the same arrogant attitude when it comes to his own people.

yes we all know how ‘freedom and democracy’ have become a gift for the ‘liberated peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan etc’. Arrogance and simplistic delusion.

Figures, with the kiind of “morality” taught in Wasilla, Alaska, that this kid Morlock would end up being a psychopathic serial killer.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3XEMEHO6BZRQB32JGAYJQYDBVE EnderW

come to think of it, what the hell kind of parents would name their kid “Morlock”???

Weren’t the Morlocks the cannibalistic troglodyte human mutants from a zillion years in the future in “The Time Machine”?

Goes to show the level of parenting that is available in Wasilla.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3XEMEHO6BZRQB32JGAYJQYDBVE EnderW

no shit, i bet morlock went to sarah’s church.

i wonder if the drugs involved were meth. Sarah is always methed up.

yeah, southern poverty a few years ago uncovered over 25,000 nazi skinheads in gangs in baghdad.

the most common graffitti in baghdad at the time was aryan nations.

Um, Vajid, perhaps you misunderstood me – when I said get out of that hell hole I was referring to the U$, which has undeniably become a hell hole. I would say that Iraq and Afghanistan have become hell holes, but only from the contagion of the U$ “presence” there. The U$ owes at least as much in reparations to the good people of Iraq and Afghanistan as it has spent so far trying to destroy them and posoning their countries, all for the sake of stealing their natural resources. I’m ashamed to be a veteran…
