Tea party activists gather in DC for loosely defined Glenn Beck event

Thousands of Americans gathered Saturday in the heart of the US capital for a rally to “restore America,” led by right-wing icons including talk show host Glenn Beck and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

The rally has attracted controversy because it is being held on the 47th anniversary of civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, at the Lincoln memorial on the National Mall, where King spoke.

Many of those attending Saturday’s event belong to the conservative Tea Party movement, which some African-American groups have criticized as racist, prompting claims that the rally insults King’s legacy.

But Beck, whose Fox News show is a must-watch for many US conservatives, said the date of the event is a coincidence, and that the rally is intended to be non-political. He also argues that he has every right to King’s legacy.

“Whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln. Blacks don’t own Martin Luther King,” he said earlier this month after being accused of trying to “hijack” the anniversary of King’s legendary speech.

The aim of the Saturday rally, dubbed “Restoring Honor,” has been loosely defined, with Beck saying it would be a faith-based show of support and gratitude for US military families, honoring “heroes, our heritage and our future.”

But the inclusion of Republican superstar Palin on the roster of speakers and the rhetoric surrounding the rally suggest the event will be far from politics-free.

“There is profound change happening in America and there is a window of opportunity that comes in the life span of every republic, every civilization, a window of opportunity to reach for that brass ring or to miss it,” Beck said of the gathering on his website.

“We’re not the people that we’ve allowed ourselves to become,” added the rightwing pundit, who has rallied rising conservative opposition to President Barack Obama and his administration.

Those in the crowd at the event, which organizers said could draw some 100,000 people, described a need to reclaim American values.

“We want to see our nation return to its foundation principles,” said Lou Tribus, a 67-year-old retiree who travelled from the southern US state of Tennessee to the capital for the rally.

Another attendee, Dawn, who declined to give her last name, said she wanted to “bring back the values that my country was founded on.”

The 47-year-old, a small business owner from northern Virginia, said she could not understand opposition to the rally’s location and date.

“I think Martin Luther King would agree with us,” she told AFP. “I don’t see why they think we shouldn’t be here today.”

But the question of race and racism has afflicted the new US conservative movement most prominently represented by the Tea Party movement.

Group members have touted openly racist signs at rallies, prompting the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, the most numerous and oldest US organization of its kind, to pass a resolution condemning the Tea Party as racist.

Attendees at the rally Saturday largely honored organizer requests that they not bring banners or political signs. Instead, the predominantly white crowd, many seated on folding chairs and accompanied by their children, wore t-shirts with slogans including “Got principles?” and “Restoring Honor.”

God: Glenn, now that you are trying to get into the pearly gates, I have a few things to clear up.
Glenn: Well God, let me explain, I know I broke every commandment in the book, on numerous occasions, and was paid well for it. But, I begged your forgiveness every day, and I received it.
God: Glenn, I see you fell for that fools trap. Thinking you could continue to get cancellations on your transgressions. Well, you know I deal with things in threes, and now you get a three from me. Three strikes, your out Glenn. Down to hell you go, they need a new furnace tender. These people just amaze me. They cannot accept the inclusion of all races in our society and they are solidly homophobic. Racist homophobes are actually mentally ill, it is a type of paranoid neuroses (read an article about it). I guess now we can calculate how many hard core paranoid neurotics their are in this country.

I am actually embarrased by them. I am sorry for our President because he deserves the respect and support that ALL of our previous Presidents have received and he has been treated awfully by many people, like these, “tea partiers”. I do not think Dr. King would see this gathering as a positive thing, but rather as the veiled insult it was intended to be.

The power and influence of television. The crowd of television citizens brought there by a news network that could be easily run by Mr. Barnum and Mr. Bailey and probably is in spirit.

It is a rally created by television man. A crowd who likes how television man foams at the mouth day after day in television land.

Behind this rally Beck is seeing dollar bills. This rally should be known as dollar bills for Beck. Buy his books, buy his bull. Billy Mays couldn’t do better than the pitch man Beck.

Yes folks Barnum and Bailey brings you the amazing Beck. Watch Beck as he takes a potato and proves to you how it is a communist plot, because potatoes have eyes and the communist have eyes too. Get this and more from Beck, step right up folks, tickets please, tickets please, and don’t forget the buy the t-shirts over there.

23% of Americans are Authoritarian Personalities. They are Beck’s (and Hannity’s and Rush’s) audience. They’ve been the object of the longest (65 year) and most intensive sociological study ever done and we know who they are and how they”think”.[John Dean's "Conservatives without Conscience"] They are, by their own admission, moved by hatred, fear, and other low emotions and are impervious to Logic. Want to understand them, read Dean’s book.

“GLEN BECK IS A COMPLETE MINIPULATOR AND HOW CAN ANYBODY LISTEN TO SOMEONE MAKING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR WITH NO CONCEPT OF REAL WORK”

I would call him a carnival barker…. AND he does have a concept of real work …his career up till a few years ago was as a failed radio DJ a zoo keeper…that is his qualification for his current gig….. television evangelists have a place in this society because they show their audience a light .. and the audience will follow them anywhere…mob mentality

He is not crazy …he is playing a roll that is making him incredibly wealthy …when that happens , they buy into it and become what you see …why do the ones that are not deluded get shot….??? because they will not be controlled and are not good for the guys behind the curtain conspiracy…??? I do not think so this all happens for a reason …who does it benefit….i just bring it up you decide or better yet do your own homework

I can not say it is the GOP, Republicans or conservatives are behind it… [ it is not an accident... there is something behind the curtain for sure ]

And their motivation is divide and conquer…. I do not think the democrats are agitating racism etc to make the tea party look bad… because they are not that effective and probably could not pull off a church bake sale effectively… BUT I do know the “OTHER ONES” will stop at NOTHING

I watched pretty much the whole thing. I thought his message was rambling and incoherent, just like on his show. I thought the crowd look pretty bored, disappointed and I also saw people leaving about 2 hours into the show. I’m pretty certain that the remaining crowd was probably encouraged to move in closer so it looked more well attended than it really was. You could see people moving up closer filling in the gaps while the crazy master of ceremonies was speaking. This guy is a dry drunk, I’ve been saying that about him for more than a year now. He’s drunk with the power that he has and in his dry-drunk state of mind he has an illusion of being some kind of great leader who will lead the nation back to god. I got news for him….. this country was NOT founded on christianity. It is so unamerican to think he can make everybody adhere to his idea of religion. Freedom of religion means freedom FROM religion too. People who follow beck are either stupid or well…….nuf said.

You’ve just exposed me to the term “Authoritarian Personality”. Had I seen it out of context, I would have thought it only applied to dictators, but apparently it describes the type of people who would be most obedient and loyal under a dictator, and the underlying psychological reasons. I think it’s always been a naivety on my part to assume everybody in the world would prefer to be treated as independent and respectable; apparently some people, at their cores, want to be led.

I’m still unclear what it is the tea party people/right wingers think has been taken away from them. What values were taken away that this country was founded on. They still have the freedom to worship whomever they wish or whenever they want, they can still vote for whomever they want to vote for, they can still gather and “protest”, without violence, when they want or where they want.

Yesterday I found myself stopped behind a car with a Teabagger sticker. It wasn’t a bumper sticker because it was big and square so the teabagger had to stick it on the hatch door. When the signal light changed, this asshole bagger didn’t move for almost 30 seconds, then ever so slowly drove on. Behind me there was a long line of traffic and a lot of people would miss the chance to get thru the intersection on that green light cycle. 1/4 of a mile past the intersection and I had to pass the creep who was doing 25 mph on a 4-lane divided road. As I passed, I looked in to see who was driving and I saw a fat woman with a cell phone to her ear oblivious to the world around her.

The motto of the teabaggers (how did I miss this?) should be “It’s All About Me.” That went thru my mind yesterday, then when I recalled that the biggest teabagger heroes are Beck and Palin, that cinched it.

Are you a teabagger? Then fuck YOU.

The Koch brothers and Rupert Murdoch paid for most it, I’d wager. After all, if they didn’t, and 54 people showed up, Beck’s show, and thus Murdoch, would lose a fortune in canceled advertising. Almost the entire Constitution & Declaration of Independence are based on the Bible. Most of the actual writings of the founding fathers had to do with serving God & following the Word. I don’t have a problem with difference of opinion about policy, but why so many personal insults?)

It’s a shame what the tea parties have become. the re-ignition of the event was for liberty, peace, and prosperity in support of Rep Paul. Now, it is unrecognizable. I disagree with everything Beck says, after all, he called Paul supporters terrorists, but the media & the left have gone above and beyond reason to label the entire movement racist. It shows that the left and the media are incapable of even basic, logical argument. Why not argue against some of the absurd positions Beck takes in his interpretation of US history? Beck is a pro big government, pro-intervention, pro-imperialsim neocon and always will be. Perhaps that is why the left doesn’t’ engage in an exchange of ideas: because the left cannot argue against the idea of omnipotent and leading government. Government should be an afterthought in our society not the most oppressive force in our lives. The founding documents (though the constitution’s interpretation of slavery was clearly wrong) spoke to the understanding that people had essential and birth given rights: life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness-property. Now we live in a nation where the government claims ownership to everything from our earnings (income taxes) to our property (eminent domain) to our bodies (drug war)…The ‘freest’ nation on earth has more persons incarcerated than any other nation on the planet.
The discourse today is elementary, distracted, and void of intellectualism. Instead of having a true debate over the function of government and the direction the nation should head into the future, we get this circus perpetuated by corporate media who gains in wealth and influence by creating this false divide. Neocons, like their ‘progressive’ counterparts want to take your wealth from you and use it for the ‘greater good’ because they know better than you because they are the government. It is a charade that has a visible shelf life despite its dominance today. The reason the message of liberty, peace, and prosperity will win out in the end is because it calls us to our best ideals, and is the only way to truly being free. The intellectual revolution has begun. Though not ready to become the sweeping movement that will bring us back in accord with our founding ideals, the masses are ditching former information authorities for the truth. Ours will be a peaceful revolution because nothing is more powerful than an idea.

“Imagine today’s depraved Left calling for a march on Washington. In 1964 the progressive labor movement, liberal organizations and all the major civil rights organizations took on a young and popular president who took office after years of Republican rule. No longer is this possible.

Today, mainline women’s organizations, along with Gay organizations, many Jewish groups, labor, and the rest of the corrupt Left do not represent their constituencies. The corrupt Left can only whine and complain about Glenn Beck and the Tea Party movement. The corrupt Left today is incapable and unwilling to organize anything to match the Tea Party movement. Today’s corrupt Left will only protect Barack Obama with shouts of “racist” at every turn and development.

The great march on Washington in 1964 was not just about great speeches. It was part of a movement. Today’s corrupt Left has forgotten the effect of riding buses for hours in pursuit of a cause you believe in, along with other like minded people. Every bus becomes a political convention and life long friendships. Every bus becomes a strategy session. Every bus becomes a canvassing effort. Every bus reveals unknown allies in local communities who then establish a connection – which becomes a stronger and more powerful movement….

…Obama Dimocrats thought this year’s “Recovery Summer” series of publicity stunts would not only be a time to trumpet how they wasted money on “stimulus” projects. Obama Dimocrats also thought that the series of “Recovery Summer” publicity stunts would preempt another horrible August like the Tea Party summer of Town Hall protests in 2009. Problem is the economic data do not cooperate and Obama and Biden are increasingly out of touch and obviously so.

So let the Obama Dimocrats, the Obama Left, the “creative class” fools allow themselves to feel superior to the Tea Party activists with the same vinegar disdain they held and hold for Hillary Clinton supporters. We haven’t gone away and neither will the Tea Party.

Let these sybarites luxuriate in their smugness. Let them whine. While today’s corrupt Left whines Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin organize. Today’s corrupt Left is not only corrupt it is also useless and stupid.”

I don’t know whether I want the Dems to pay attention or not because they could decide to play Glenn’s side of the rode. On third and fourth thoughts it’s disturbing. Those in the crowd today are definitely conservative voters and no matter who the Dems ran they wouldn’t get their votes. Be interesting to know if this event had been held in New York or Chicago what the turn out would have been. I think the Dems can write off the south and part of the southwest but can they hold the rest of the country? Is American going to have to do the facist thing before we get to the other side of the road?

I guess I’d rather cheer on a bunch of racist, neocon, war-loving, islamophobes than a bunch of lazy, racist, war-loving, exploitative, condescending, corporate-shilling, uber-divisive, hate-your-neighbor, ignorant, segregated neo-libs.

  • Anonymous

Did i mention that neo-lib, fuaxgressives are also hypocrites and sexist assholes?

My Goodness, I missed going to the Glenn Beck Rally. I had better keep a closer eye on my appointment calender. All kidding aside, that character does need to be watched very closely. Somehow he manages to get people to believe in his nonsense.

  • TheDevilCanDance

Lady, you need a boyfriend, seriously, and this is not the right place to find one…..

LOL I think you meant anyone with the reading comprehension of a 3 year year old would dispute Bre’s absurd assertion

I hope you gag on those useless, shriveled balls. Time for you to race-bait some more and pretend to be tolerant while acting like a huge, intolerant, steaming asshole.

“the principles this country was founded on”………..cool……..the return of slavery, women don’t get to vote, states issuing their own currency, more segregation, beating your wife, child labor, unsafe working conditions, public humiliation (stocks), book burning, witch burning, no more advanced science………..can’t wait to step back into the “dark” ages……….

There are bound to have been some Confederacy re-enactors at this Beck event, possibly even carrying guns, which adds even more irony to Beck holding this event at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. I hope the Park Service checks to see if there are any bullet holes in Honest Abe’s statue. And “Restoring Honor” also has it’s connection to the Confederacy, because southern slave-owners had their own “honor code” which often fell outside the law, which after the Civil War morphed into the southern “vigilante code” as certain southerners sought to reclaim and restore their “lost honor.” The Civil War has never ended in the minds of certain Americans, and Beck’s event is just another instance of guerrilla warfare being waged against the rights and freedoms of other U.S. citizens. And who’s primarily funding this right-wing guerrilla attack inside our country? Wealthy old white guys, kind of like the wealthy white plantation owners in the old south. Wealthy old white guys out to enslave all other U.S. citizens economically, politically and religiously.

  • TheDevilCanDance

Aww, I Iove when some post menopausal fruitcake talks naughty to me…

As to blowing Obama’s cock, Darling you are tripping & projecting. I am the secretary of the East Coast chapter of the Aryan Nation, not exactly a liberal organization….

  • TheDevilCanDance

” blow, eats pussy, sucks cock, balls, steaming asshole.”.

Poor thing. Smells like sexual frustration to me.It’s not a boyfriend you need, but a gang-bang :)

100,000 white man march….isn’t it cute? I find it hysterical that after 234 years of the Good ol’ White Boy network, white men are screaming for their rights and “taking back the civil rights movement”. They’re scared because 1) they have lost absolute power. 2) We, America, finally, after 234 years of the promise of equality are closer to Dr. Martin Luther King Jrs. dream than we ever have been and THAT folks is what these teabaggers are rallying against.

  • Anonymous

This is the best ans most well-reasoned comment from a Lib in a long time: “possibly even carrying guns.” Hahaha And you possibly have an IQ!

Beck is a crook, he is doing this shit for the money,he is irrelevant. He will eventually fell victim of his own success, like many before. A major scandal or health condition will bring an end to his career

Besides his most dangerous enemies are not on the left. I don’t think Rush Limbaugh. appreciates Beck’s ever growing success. Bill O’reilyy despises & envies his popularity.
Just a matter of time before someone decides to take him off the playground.

He can call upon 100′s of 1000′s of people, so what. they are millions of Dingos who believe they have been abducted by aliens.. His base represents the top bottom of the worst of America. He may scares the left, but he cannot bite.

No, the March on Washington was on August 28, 1963. All it took was a few seconds to Google the date. While it’s no big sin to make a simple error of a single year, it’s damn funny to see you be so snotty when someone points out your error and you STILL get it wrong.
