Navy airdrops dead, drugged mice in battle with snake species

In its effort to rid the island territory of Guam of an invasive snake species, the US Navy has enlisted the help of an unlikely set of allies: Dead mice stuffed with a common painkiller.

The mice are stuffed with acetaminophen (known more commonly by its brand name, Tylenol), attached to little biodegradable “parachutes,” and then airdropped into the treetops of Guam’s jungle.

The idea is that the mice will be eaten by the brown tree snake — a deadly species that was accidentally introduced to Guam after World War II and has since caused the extinction of several local species.

The dead-mouse airdrops, which began last month, are part of a plan hatched a decade ago by the US Department of Agriculture and the EPA to rid the island of brown tree snakes, reports Stars and Stripes. The drops are being carried out near Naval Base Guam by a naval helicopter crew.

“The discovery that [brown tree] snakes will die when they eat acetaminophen was a huge step forward,” Anne Brooke, conservation resources program manager for Naval Facilities Command Marianas, told Stars and Stripes. “The problem was how you get the snakes to eat it.”

Ordinarily, packing dead mice with poison wouldn’t work, because most snakes wouldn’t eat a dead mouse, but the brown tree snake is an exception.

“There are very few snakes that will consume something that they haven’t killed themselves,” Dan Vice of USDA Wildlife Services told National Geographic. But brown tree snakes are scavengers as well as hunters, and that’s the “chink in the brown tree snake’s armor.”

But simply dropping dead, poisoned mice into the jungle wouldn’t be enough, because if the mice landed on the ground they would be eaten by lizards and other ground-level creatures, and not by the brown tree snake, which lives in treetops. National Geographic explains how this problem was solved:

Before the laced mice are airdropped, they are attached to “flotation devices” that each consist of two pieces of cardboard joined by a 4-foot-long (1.2-meter-long) paper streamer.

The flotation device was designed to get the bait stuck in upper tree branches, where the brown tree snakes reside, instead of falling to the jungle floor, where the drug-laden mice might inadvertently get eaten by nontarget species, such as monitor lizards.

To determine whether the dead-mouse drops are having the desired effect, some of the mice are equipped with radio transmitters that can be monitored for activity.

“If we go out tomorrow and the radio signal from the bait has moved, it’s very likely that [it was eaten by] a snake,” USDA researcher Peter Savarie told National Geographic.

Preliminary results on the project aren’t in yet, but biologist Haldre Rogers of the University of Washington in Seattle says that, at best, it will reduce the snake population, not eliminate it entirely.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the silver bullet for brown tree snakes yet,” she said.

A detailed description of the plan can be found here (PDF), courtesy of the USDA.

Apparently they had to stuff the mice with Tylenol instead of Oxycontin because Rush was planing a vacation in Guam and they were afraid he would get stuck in a tree.

BTW did anyone else see an ad on this page for “rodents in your crawlspace”. Ironic, Article about putting mice in trees and an Google ad to get rid of mice in crawlspaces. Great ad placement!

Having lived on Naval Base Guam years ago and come out of my house with my two small children on several mornings to come face to face with a snake hanging from the tree at my front door not to mention the numerous times the power went out because a snake crawled into transformer or substation and got fried, I wish the Navy and the people of Guam much success with this project. When we lived there the snakes were working on killing off the entirely population a beautiful white bird native to Guam. I believe they have accomplished that now.

“The problem was how you get the snakes to eat it.”

Yeah, snake population control is a little more complicated — it’s not like you can simply scare them into queuing up for a flu shot and then jab them full of life shortening neurotoxins.

I lived on Guam for three years when I was a kid, during the Korean war. I played out in the boondocks almost daily and never saw one of these snakes.
What I did find however was a lot of ammunition left over from WWII. I came home one day with an unexploded Japanese hand grenade that nearly had the pin rusted out. As a kid, I just though it was a cool little metal bottle. Everybody cleared out of our house pretty quick when they saw what I had.

the navy is preparing space to expand the marine contingent from okinawa to guam.

at least they learned that the mongoose is not the answer … cus when the snakes are gone they go after all birds … when the birds are gone … and the bats are gone … the insect populations explode … and the mongoose become the uninvited, infectious, feral picnic guests, that is if the biting ants haven’t already sent you off … maui

introduced by the u$ “…Believed to be a stowaway on a U.S. military transport near the end of World War II, …”

50+ years and this is the best plan the u$ could come up with, i’m sure the people of guam probably started complaining as soon as they realized their birds were gone. and that little parachute is gonna keep it away from other animal species … give me a break the u$ don’t care about collateral damage with humans you think they are going to care about it in the animal world

50+ years to sweep it under the carpet

the u$ probably spent the 1st 10 years denying the problem existed, the next 10 years denying they were at fault, the next 10 years arguing about who should take care of the problem, the next 10 years trying to figure out what to do, the next 10 years to figure out how to pay for it, and maybe the last 5 years “actively” fighting the problem, after it has gotten completely out of control.

i can picture that … rush stuck in a tree with mice tails hanging out of his mouth while the brown tree snake sits on the branch above him telling all the other snakes not to eat the white hanging mice

The only thing that this will accomplish is to create a new version of this snake which is not killed by acetaminophen, for the same reason we have lots of antibiotic resistant bacteria now.

And they will be well fed, fat, and happy snakes.

Why the parachutes? They already stated that these are the only snakes to eat dead mice, so why would monitors be at risk?

Enough of any drug will cause liver damage and eventually failure. Snakes just have a smaller liver than humans, making it less able to process a human’s normal dose of tylenol.

Actually, the Navy there has pristine land I have personally SEEN BIRDS supposedly EXTINCT nesting and thriving…I’ve seen a hawk there. Seen it swoop down from a branch and attack a frog or mouse, couldn’t quite see what it got.

I’ve seen some kind of Jay. I’ve seen the birds they are raising in captivity up north alive and well on Navy facilities..I’d say conservatively…Ive seen 6 species of birds supposedly extinct from this snake.

Not that this snake isn’t a big problem: ever have one cross a powerline next to your house? BOOM, then the lights go out…and the next day pieces of Brown snake next to pole.

    Wiki-brown tree snake:
“Due to the availability of prey and lack of predators in introduced habitats such as Guam, they have been known to grow to larger sizes than their normal 1 to 2 meters in length.[2] The longest recorded length of this species is one found on Guam measuring three meters.[2]”

“Shortly after World War II, and before 1952, the Brown tree snake was accidentally transported from its native range in the South Pacific to Guam, probably as a stowaway in ship cargo.[2][5] As a result of abundant prey resources on Guam and the absence of natural predators outside of feral pigs and Mangrove monitors, Brown tree snake populations reached unprecedented numbers.[2] Snakes caused the extirpation of most of the native forest vertebrate species; thousands of power outages affecting private, commercial, and military activities; widespread loss of domestic birds and pets; and considerable emotional trauma to residents and visitors alike when snakes invaded human habitats with the potential for envenomation of small children.[2] Since Guam is a major transportation hub in the Pacific, numerous opportunities exist for the Brown tree snakes on Guam to be introduced accidentally to other Pacific islands as passive stowaways in ship and air traffic from Guam.[2] To minimize this threat, trained dogs are used to search, locate, and remove brown tree snakes prior to the departures of outbound military and commercial cargo and transportation vessels from the island. [6] Numerous sightings of this species have been reported on other islands including Wake Island, Tinian, Rota, Okinawa, Diego Garcia, Hawaii, and even Texas in the continental United States.[7] An incipient population is probably established on Saipan.[2] APAP has been used to help eradicate the snake on Guam. [8][9]”

    Wiki- guam:
Believed to be a stowaway on a U.S. military transport near the end of World War II, the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) came to Guam and nearly eliminated the native bird population of an island that previously had no native species of snake; this snake has no natural predators on the island. While slightly venomous, the brown tree snake is relatively harmless to human beings. Although some studies have suggested a high density of brown tree snakes on Guam,

residents rarely see these nocturnal snakes. (separated out for emphasis)

The United States Department of Agriculture has trained detector dogs to keep brown tree snakes out of the island’s cargo flow. The United States Geological Survey is training dogs that are capable of detecting snakes in forested environments around the region’s islands.[28][29]

The consequence of the introduction of the brown tree snake has been significant over the past several decades. The reduction of local bird populations has been attributed to the introduction and presence of brown tree snakes, who eat them. According to many elders, koko birds were common in Guam prior to World War II; they are no longer around largely due to predation by brown tree snakes.[30]

U.S. Geological Survey – The Brown Treesnake on Guam:
    Synopsis
Shortly after World War II, and before 1952, the brown Treesnake was accidentally transported from its native range in the South Pacific to Guam, probably as a stowaway in ship cargo. As a result of abnormally abundant prey resources on Guam and the absence of natural predators and other population controls, brown Treesnake populations reached unprecedented numbers. Snakes caused the extirpation of most of the native forest vertebrate species; thousands of power outages affecting private, commercial, and military activities; widespread loss of domestic birds and pets; and considerable emotional trauma to residents and visitors alike when snakes invaded human habitats with the potential for severe envenomation of small children. Since Guam is a major transportation hub in the Pacific, numerous opportunities exist for the brown Treesnakes on Guam to be introduced accidentally to other Pacific islands as passive stowaways in ship and air traffic from Guam. Numerous sightings of this species have been reported on other islands, and an incipient population is probably established on Saipan. It is important that people who may come in contact with the brown Treesnake, particularly on neighboring islands and other high-risk sites, understand the scope of this problem and how to identify the snake so proper action can be taken.

This resource has been developed to provide source materials on the history of the invasion, continuing threats, research results, and containment and management of the brown Treesnake (Boiga irregularis) in Guam and its relevance to other islands and mild continental environments.

    http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/animals/bts.shtml
Report to the Congress: Control of the Brown Tree Snake (BTS) (Aug 2008; PDF | 68 KB)

    Background
The brown tree snake (BTS), also called brown treesnake, was introduced onto Guam after WWII, and has since decimated the native bird population, caused power outages, and is responsible for one of every thousand hospital emergency room visits on the island. To avoid introduction of the BTS, Hawaii and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) have imposed a rigorous BTS Interdiction Program that requires aircraft and cargo departing from Guam to be inspected for the BTS immediately prior to departure. Flights failing to complete this process experience mission delays or cancellations due to flight restrictions. The planned mission expansion on Guam could increase the potential for the BTS to be introduced to other locations.

getting rid of invasive species should be done more but because so many people think that it is not necessary we dont put as much effort into it. this plan looks out for the native species at least in theory it does. we have to put more efforts into getting rid of invasive species that cause huge disturbances in nature. some of the top priorities should be where the invasive species has almost out competed the native species so much that they are on either the threatened or endangered species list.
