Tape analysis: Pistol shots preceded 1970 Kent St. shooting deaths of 4 students

A forensic audio expert says a tape recording of the 1970 shooting deaths of four Kent State University students by Ohio National Guardsmen reveals the sound of pistol shots 70 seconds earlier.

The Plain Dealer reports Friday that the expert’s review detected four shots matching the acoustic signature of a .38-caliber revolver.

Witnesses have previously reported a confrontation involving angry students and a paid FBI informant who was photographing protesters. The informant was carrying a .38-caliber pistol. Some witnesses say he fired it to warn away angry demonstrators, which the soldiers could have mistook for sniper fire.

The FBI informant has denied firing warning shots.

The long-forgotten recording was found in a library archive in 2007.

If true, that makes the National Guardsmen’s actions a little more understandable.

    Not much, but a little.

Very possibly could be true. Something triggered the assault by poorly trained Nation Guard soldiers. And WHO gave these soldiers “LIVE” ammo? There was NO violence on campus to begin with, violence was brought onsite by outside agitators.

  • Anonymous

The FBI has a long history of acting as agent provocateurs in too many incidents to recount. As America’s very own Sicherheitsdienst (SD) they have no shame about creating crimes for them to “solve.”

  • PrissyPatriot

Well, this explains why no Guardsmen went to jail. They were the patsies in the operation, it was a set up. Good ole Gov Rhodes. The FBI informant claims he didn’t do it? Forensics doesn’t lie, but people do.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/PSKROFVS7E4PVTI2CEPLFWEJII John

Please keep in mind that nobody has ever been held accountable for these murders. Not Gov. Rhodes or the commanding officer ….or even this FBI douchebag who was well known around campus as an outsider, provocateur snitch. He was no secret to SDS or Nam Vets Against the War.

This was an early, obscene example of our American tradition of letting evil, rotten bastards skate ….often with rewards and promotions.

Like when the cops threw a bomb at Haymarket Square in the late 1800′s. The authorities secretly perform a violent act by tossing the bomb so the law can open fire on civilians in “defense”.

Why do i have a feeling we will repeat this kind of story yet again in the very near future?

  • Anonymous

… not warning shots , more like a starters pistol at a track meet .

  • Anonymous

How so? They were ordered to fire by their officer in order to push back the students throwing stones at them. Most fired in the air but unfortunately, someone(s) didn’t.

Another black mark in our history.

Agent provocateur. FBI modus operandi then as now. Kent State is an old wound that has not healed. Will never heal until there is accountability. But in America, that never happens. Not to those that should be held to account. Think Vietnam and Bobby McNamara. Think Ronnie RayGun and IranContra. Think 9/11 Bushco Afghaniscam Iraq torture and illegal rendition. Golly and how a come Eric Holder never went after the Bushco? Kent State is the norm. Yes I admit to a glaring omission of numerous instances of government high crimes and misdemeanors. Leonard Peltier and the FBI framing an innocent man…

    Hi smallbear:
Oh yes. If/and/or/when Amerika’s “original” genocidal sins are addressed then maybe just maybe, there might begin some healing. Would seem that Amerika was founded on genocide and ethnic slaughter. First Nation MUST be allowed a “redress of grievances.”
Will that ever happen? I’m not holding my breath nor would I dare to dream. You know, dreams of justice? Justice for First Nation.

The right has been trying to revise the history of the Kent State Massacre for years. This is just the latest in a long line of it-wasn’t-the-govenrment’s-fault theories.

  • Anonymous

    An addendum to your point:

The Kent State shootings also caused a near mass mutiny among the troops in Viet Name. It certainly inflamed and strengthened the anti-war movement. And it provided justification for somed anti-war protesters to begin to use violence in their demonstrations, which had been relatively peaceful up to that point.

  • Anonymous

I believe you may have missed my point . I think that the .38 caliber revolver was used knowing that it would set off the mayhem and murder that ensued . A signal to fire , sort of like a starters pistol .

And almost everyone including the left has nearly forgotten the Jackson State massacre which followed the same general pattern as the Kent State killings except only 2 people died in this incident at a Black College in Mississippi. Most note that this incident never got the publicity that the Kent State killings received. Can anyone guess why that might have been and why in most of these discussions of the tragedies of that summer it still goes mostly unnoticed even today?

And don’t forget the Wyoming range wars, the Ludlow Massacre, and the whole range of violence used against those who just wanted to be paid fairly for risking their lives in the course of trying to feed their families. The gov’t has and will continue to use people who want to make history rather than to leave people alone.

What really bothers me is that it’s damn near ALWAYS the “informers’ who make things FAR worse than they would EVER be. Remember the Sears tower 7? A bunch of complete nit wits who didn’t have a violent thought UNTIL the gov’t informer put them up to it, supplied them with the weapons, and the plan itself. And rather than jail the scum bag informer whose IDEA it was, they jailed the nit wits who let themselves get talked into it.

If gov’t would just TRUST people, things would be FAR better in this country. They scream about not wanting a “nanny state”, but then they turn around and keep us all from being allowed to BE adults. They send in “informers” to try to get the Amish and the Quakers to bomb something, and then make things up when they refuse to take the bait.

Too bad trying to actually SAY something in this country is worthy of being spied on, infiltrated, and screwed. So much for free speech. That only applies if they can put you in a caged 10 x 10 space so NO ONE can hear you.

Unfortunately the gun control freaks don’t have a clue either. Yet they dictate what Joe Blow can have for a firearm and what he can’t have. I’m convinced if these idiots ever came to the realization of what a common shotgun can do at close range they would probably freak and ban it because “we realize” now it’s more deadly than an “assault” rifle. And we all know how knowledgeable they are with the assault rifles. The insane are running the asylum.

  • Anonymous

“Some witnesses say he fired it to warn away angry demonstrators, which the soldiers could have mistook for sniper fire.”

First of all, it’s “mistaken,” not “mistook.” Secondly, it was more likely a deliberate signal than a mistake, to make it seem as though the first shots were coming from where the students were. Although, it’s quite possible the soldiers weren’t in on it.

  • Anonymous

If you think assault weapons should be legal, you have no business being out of the asylum. But frankly, yes, the U.S. should join nearly all economically advanced countries in banning handguns, period–or at least not allowing any more of the damn things to be sold.

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

It didn’t help that the prosecutor for that case was an old ex-National Guardsman from the same unit that committed the shootings. No matter how it started…there was no hope of anything but obfuscation and misdirection from local leaders who wished to shift blame onto the victims.

You know…if we had a real president, with real courage of conviction, he (or she) could direct the Attorney General to address some of the high crimes that have been perpetrated against the good citizens of this country.
With a word, the President could get 10 million people out into the streets, in front of DOJ, or the FBI, or Golden Sacks, or Blackwater/Xe, to demand justice.
I’m not talking about a rally to restore sanity (which I will attend), but a rally to demand justice, and to demand fulfillment of the promise of liberty.

Maybe one day, we’ll get one. Until then, I suppose we’re going to have to make due with Mr. Milquetoast Obama. Such a pity. Is this really the best we can do?

as always, when govt touts an incident, assume they’re GUILTY of False-Flag State-sponsored TERRRORISM.

    The Headline should read:

“Kent State FBI SNITCH FIRED the First Shot, INSTIGATING A Govt MASSACRE of Their Own EMPLOYERS.”

  • Anonymous

The Weathermen started their bombing campaign in October of 1969, more than a half year before Kent State. As for violent anti-war protests, things were getting vicious (I’m referring to the protesters, the police being violent pretty much from the outset) on the West Coast by 1967. Kent State wasn’t a tipping point in re police/military violence against protesters, it was a unique incident that was not repeated.

  • Anonymous

Agree with most of your sentiments, except for this:
“Although, it’s quite possible the soldiers weren’t in on it and really thought they WERE firing back.”

IF the Federalized Nat.Guards were NOT intent on murder, they wouldn’t have been ARMED with bayonets, let alone 600m kill-range rifles for that matter.

More importantly, what one should REALLY ask is, WTF did Nat.Guardsmen think they were supposed to be “protecting?”

The students weren’t threatening any college property. In fact, none of the murders would have occurred, had the govt simply NOT deployed their troops, which by its very act elevated the level of potential violence.

Would the guardsmen have even ‘needed to defend themselves,’ had they NOT complied with the illegal orders, as per Nuremberg, to violate Posse Commitatus, as well as The First Amendment? Common Sense says, NO!

As per your point about perhaps they may have seen a need to “fire back,” the only reason why they could have remotely rationalized a need to bring high power rifles to SCARE the UNARMED students with possibility of DEATH, is because the Texas Tower Shooter, aka Fmr.USMC.Charles Whitman, happened 4yrs earlier in 1966. But we wouldn’t even have that WITHOUT Gvt’s own MK-ULTRA program, which Whitman CLEARLY was part of.

Plus, the entire act of deploying National Guard since its 1903 creation to be put under the aegis of Fed.Govt.Authority, for the sole purpose of controlling a student protest is by DEFINITION a violation of Posse Commitatus Act of 1878. A citizen protest is NOT a case of insurrection. It’s called “Redress of Grievances,” as EXPLICITLY protected under the 1st Amendment.

Plus, the entire notion that ANY CITIZEN would be REMOTELY okay with even the mere idea that an armed troop would simply open up on a group of students, NOT a targeted individual who is clearly armed, is just plain MURDER. The fact that Nat.Guards were warned to be ready to open up on civilian citizenry, ie. THEIR EMPLOYERS, that alone constitutes a conspiracy to MURDER, as Kent State is NOT a 360 degree FreeFire Zone in a War theater.

Those whom participated in govt sanctioned murder should be indicted with capital crimes charge. PERIOD.

Historically, it’s funny if one actually studies the origin of the first capital punishment in America: the Founders viewed the act of devaluing currency so egregious and criminal that penalty for violating the act, especially BY a Govt goon, was DEATH:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinage_Act_of_1792
“Further, the penalty for fraud or embezzlement by officers or employees of the mint was death.”

Clearly, the Founders knew who would be in position to be a FAR GREATER threat; not some armed robber, but a robber with a feathertip pen working withIN the govt.

Clearly, the Founders were onto something; in fact, still, after a rigorous and lawful application of Constitutional Due-Process, the ONLY just application for the Death Penalty is, to be used against Govt lackeys who violate their Constitutional Oaths, as there is NOTHING more dangerous than corrupt public servants, especially ones that LIE UNDER OATH to lead a nation into illegal wars/occupation. Or, the proceeding cycle of elected politicians that knows such state of affairs, yet continue and expand it.

With such ubiquity of Gvt worker corruption, as well as a culture of corrupt Wall St. Banksters that keep them employed, and funded, if such laws were in effect across the board, one may find themselves in a govt worker-LESS American Republic.

  • Anonymous

if you think there is such thing as an “assault weapon” you have no business being out of the asylum.

ALL weapons are used for the purpose of defending or offending, aka.”assaulting.”

Your kitchen knife is an “assault weapon,” under the eyes of the law, if you used it in an assault against someone. As is your car, your cellphone, a hardbound book used to crush a windpipe, phonecord, fork, bread knife, chopstick, or even a sharpened toothbrush handle. As in practically ANY household item. Holy shit, I guess you must be living in an armory.

You’re displaying just how much you’ve been brainwashed with media propaganda. Seriously, ask yourself, just where do you get your understanding of weapons from, unless you’re a really, I mean a really experienced tactical shooting student, other than what you see on TV, films, video games, or “news.” Would you take such uninformed disposition and publicly make damning statements on issues of your own personal concern? NO. So what makes you think you’re qualified to disparage something that requires an extremely responsible attitude toward owning and using it, where high level of expertise is a necessity, when you apparently display very little understanding of?

There IS such thing called an assault rifle, it’s a term Hitler made up to name the StG-44 the SturmGewher. Literally “storm rifle”

  • Anonymous

um, name one commonly used “pistol” that fired a .38 in that era. and, they ain’t talkin’ .38 super.

so you’re not disputing that it might be a gunshot, but your point of contention is whether it was a “pistol” or a “revolver?” Um, those GUNSHOTS DID OCCUR. That is not in dispute. What IS important is that it was NOT a rifle shot, but from a handgun.

well, okay so let’s historically and literally address your, “They don’t even know the difference between a pistol and a revolver.”

if you said that to ANY well informed smallarms historian, or even an enthusiast, they may tell you that ‘Son, YOU DO NOT seem to be aware of the difference, either.’

the definition of a pistol, simply means a “pipe.” modern iteration would clarify that it’s a “pipe”/barrel with a fixed chamber, which would qualify most modern semi-auto handguns, with a moving slide assembly. however, since the term pistol originated in 1500′s, they weren’t referring to a 1911. nor did semi-auto “pistols” come to be until the late, late 1800′s; most widely used handguns of the late 19th Century were “revolvers.” and NO one made the distinction, then. look it up, all revolvers of 19th century Americana were regularly called “pistols.”

you know, there are even old-school gun magazine writers who still neglect to discern magazines vs. “clips.” so please, try not be be overly self-congratulatory that you think you got one gun glossary, sorta correct.

    AMEN, to that!

But IF that were so, oBUSHma would ARREST HIMSELF, as he has CONTINUED and EXPANDED ALL of GWB neocons’ illegal and UNConstitutional policies at home, as well as abroad. Two illegal undeclared wars, continuing secret and indefinite detention, rendition, TORTURE(yes, it still goes on), violation of Habeas Corpus, drone bombing a sovereign nation, renewing the UNConstitutional Patriot ActS, Military Commissions, not to mention Wall St. BailoutS, as well as FORCED purchase of PRIVATE medical insurance under the guise of a Govt program, all ring a bell?

An Assault Rifle (as opposed to an “assault weapon”) is an actual historic firearms term. It means any intermediate caliber rifle with detachable box magazine capable of both semiautomatic and fully-automatic (full or burst) operation. One could have an assault rifle which never saw military use. All select fire and full-automatic weapons are heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act and require police permission for civilian ownership in those states where such ownership is legal. Because such civilian transferable rifles have not been manufacturable for civilian ownership since 1986 they now typically cost more than a new car and are primarily investments.

The “Assault Weapons Ban” affected NO Assault Rifles. This was a term created by the Brady Campaign intended to outlaw manufacture of semi-automantic (one pull one bullet) weapons with a variety of features, such as heat guard on barrel or bayonet, which have not generally been used by criminals. It was intended as a stepping stone to outlaw semi-automatic weapons with a detachable magazine.

Yeah, and these “FBI informants” are usually former criminals doing FBI’s bidding in exchange for lighter treatment and $$$, and they’re now the same ones creating “terrorist” situations and entrapping Muslims in America, who otherwise wouldn’t be doing such things…if it wasn’t for the FBI informants.

  • ladygeek

That’s not true. In 1975, while I was still in college, I got a visit from the FBI who wanted me to become a paid informant because they thought I knew some one in the Weather Underground. The funny part was that I had a kilo of pot sitting in my living room floor because I was cleaning out the stems before I sold it and I went to bed without finishing. I’m going to say this one time and one time only: I did NOT let them into my apartment. I had a guy there who did. He was an idiot but at that time, I didn’t care about how intelligent these guys were…

I never would have let them into the apartment but I happened to be in the shower at the time. I will never forget those 2 agents sitting in my living room trying to not look at the pot. I left town fast. At that time, they couldn’t bust people in their apartments because of the search & seizure laws that required them to get a warrant before they busted you.

  • ladygeek

I understand what you are saying but, since I’m getting old and don’t remember all the details, the National Guard was never meant to serve as a military force engaged in a war time situation. It was clearly not a military force and was a peaceful demonstration and under whatever article, it is legal to assemble and get redress. I was a mere 22 yo at that time and I initially didn’t know what this was all about. But, I quickly found out because as more and more vets went to college and formed the Viet Nam Vets Against the War, they literally didn’t have a voice. I supported these military persons who were willing to sacrifice themselves for an ideal. Unfortunately, it is what we now call “Corporatists”. THAT started in Viet Nam. Also, FYI, there is a ton of oil off the west coast of Viet Nam and that’s what that war was all about.

Read this article by Scott and Perry that was recently published on Truthout

A Long History of America’s Dark Side

by: Peter Dale Scott and Robert Parry, Consortium News | Op-Ed

It may help more thoroughly explain the behavior of your 2nd Lt.
The soldiers and marines tasked with prosecuting America’s psy-wars were, besides the innocent civilians they killed, the only ones to ever pay any price whatever. And the price they have generally paid was their souls and their mental health. Our leaders have used the idealistic young of this country and systematically thrown them away. And when caught perpetrating their amoral, inhuman activities, our leaders inevitably offer up a few scapegoats from the lowest ranks to take the fall for them.

When the populace gets the least whiff of the true nature of war, and engages in dissent we are collectively preyed upon and lose our liberties as a result. We are truly no better than most of our adversaries. We believe in the ideals we’re inculcated with from birth because we have been for the most part successfully distracted, fooled, lied to, and coerced into acceptance.
Besides, there is zero incentive for our leaders to dispense with tyranny and terror, because they have never, ever been held accountable for crimes against humanity–even when we lose the wars we begin. Our cover has always been to self-righteously try the defeated leaders of other countries for the same atrocities we commit, and hope we appear concerned with humanity as a result.

Note: This is a wrenching article to read.

Exactly………..I believe a law abiding citizen should be able to own any weapon he wants short of an atomic weapon. I also believe should the Founding Fathers had foreseen weaponry in the 20th century the second amendment would have been much more elaborate. However, back in the days “arms” encompassed all that existed.

My Step Dad was a news photographer present filming events in Kent that day. He worked for the Cleveland NBC station at the time. He has said from the beginning that there was “another photographer” who fire a pistol for some reason, maybe out of fear, who started the whole thing.

I’d never heard anything to support this until now.

so you’re okay with the notion that govt routinely employ non-decompressed from PTST-ed vets, especially in police jobs, as they did back in Vietnam, as they do now?

Though, really, there is no cure for PTSD, unless the concept of sending off innocent well meaning, gullible youths to murder other innocent youths abroad, itself is abolished. And the ONLY institution that can justify murder of innocent humans is govt. yet, liberals somehow have an on-going historical cognitive dissonance with the FACT that there is NO SUCH THING as a “good gvt.” Nor, taking handouts from murderers, and torturers.

Just because they were VICTIMS, and they ARE, does not excuse them from working for the State, once back home as copTHUGS. If one knows he/she is suffering, they have NO business telling other citizenry what to do, nor are they mentally fit to carry around lethal weapons PAID for by their future murder and torture victims, THE CITIZENRY/Their EMPLOYERS.

though addressing one’s mental state in order to deal with PTSD as “survivors” rather than “victims,” which psychologically speaking does lend one to be continued to be locked in the label, at the end of the day, they’re VICTIMS of the State’s INSANE policies. Period.

There is NO excuse for murder. And if a copTHUG fully knows that he/she isn’t capable of further pressures from a stressful job, they should REFRAIN and Gvt.should BAR them from working in such jobs. This INSANE attitude toward taxleeeches in UNIFORM is precisely WHY we HAVE a fascist police state. PERIOD.

It’s like we have 500 incidents of Rodney King beatings a DAY, in a world now run amok with CORRUPT public servants and copthugs. It’s hard to imagine people went NUTS over ONE video back in 1992 in LA, and now, sheeple MORONICALLY seem to accept that cops are ALLOWED to beat, torture, taser, KILL, and bully the very citizenry that employ them. THE WORST tyrannical apologists, nowadays, ironically are the LIBERALS. Whatever happened to “Question authority?”

considering many were stupid enough to vote for a man who has CONTINUES and EXPANDED ALL of GWB’s illegalities, it ain’t surprising. With ANY liberal who still defend the same murderous actions of the State that are equal to, if not WORSE than those under GWB, continue to do so out of fragile ego, and denial. PERIOD.

The more you all live in delusion of saving face, EVERY MINUTE you’re responsible for electing a man who is continuing to ILLEGALLY murder INNOCENT Civilian population of THREE sovereign nations now: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. though, in actuality, it’s frankly ANY nation that US Mil.Ind.Complex has permanent bases in, which comes out to about 1000 Military bases in over 150 nations.

Drink on that before you defend the poor suckers in badge and uniforms.

STATISM=DEATH of Freedoms and Liberty, the sooner you all wake up from the slumber of the Govt=Good propaganda, the better.

unless you can actually connect the dot that NO organization that lie us into war, can be a “noble one” that can equally provide social programs. Warfare State = Welfare State.

    wakey wakey.

one of these days, American sheeple populace would learn to accept the reality of Govt-sponsored False Flag terrorism, is the Ruling Class’ bread and butter, as much as they readily accept watching idiotic trash like “Dancing with the Stars.”

okay, maybe I’m too optimistic, perhaps in 20yrs perhaps, they may “get” it. But frankly, at the rate the Federal Reserve, and the NWO.Wall St.Banksters and City of London criminals are manipulating the money supply, come dollar collapse, they may just be forced to deal with it.

The question is, will they be STUPID enough to depend on Gvt. and their Wall St. Overlords whom ENGINEERED the financial collapse on purpose with, more handouts?
Or, will they clamor for MORE independence and go back to being “City-State” type community based govt? Unless the Citizenry understands the fundamental philosophy of liberty, I fear the former would be the ones that even the most well meaning liberals would be attracted to.

For those who saw the crime it’s about time the US admitted it now. Another apology for murder by the USA. We have so far said sorry for infecting foreign people with STD and even blacks from the South. Now it’s those young student who did nothing but protest for the freedoms others were born with. The younger generation will hear the apology for the murders of the innocent men/women/children the USA killed/raped/tortured during the Afghanistan/Iraq invasion. Seems an apology wasn’t accepted from Hitler or other dictatiors for their murders of innocent people.

The thread was already talking about Jackson State; sorry if I wasn’t clearer. However, there is a significant difference between Kent State and Jackson State that has nothing to do with race. The Kent State shootings were the work of the National Guard which is military. The Jackson State shootings were the work of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, which is police; one doesn’t delve too deeply into the history of policing in Mississippi of the time to uncover their attitudes and intentions toward African Americans.

As far as implying racism, don’t go reaching for that first off when critiquing a post: it leaves you with nothing with which to insult the other later on. If the person indeed is a racist he/she will consider it praise; if not, you run the risk of alienating someone who conceivably is actually on your side. I don’t want to sound too much like a concern troll but try civility-it has been known to work wonders. If not, you’re shooting more or less blindly from the hip at what you wrongly assume to be a provocation, which is a recapitulation of Kent State.

No, this story — this story that we are reading — was reported months ago. This is recycled news; thus, my comment about Friday being a slow news day. Fridays generally are. They are used by MSM to dump stories or just provide fillers. Also my comment regarding the 40-year delay meets with your implication that there was a cover-up.

That too. Some of these guys are still with us. I was particularly taken aback by the secret recording made of Arlen Specter to a pro-Israeli Jewish audience (Zionist) confirming the current Israeli policy to economically strangle Gaza. There was no regard expressed by him over the civilian lives affected by that inhumane policy. I will forever see him in these two lights — the Warren Commission cover-up and the Gaza crimes against humanity.

Kent State was an act by a fascist state, a fascist state that was initiated by the coup d’etat in 1963. It has remained in power all these years with a particular focus on the military/intelligence/defense industry enforcement of foreign policy throughout the world. This is why people see no difference between Bush and Obama.
