GOP lawmaker: Illegal immigrants are like ‘Hitler’, should be shot

Georgia’s Republican State Rep. John Yates has a position on immigration that almost nobody would agree with: he wants US border agents empowered to “shoot to kill.”

Asked to justify his position, Yates recently told a reporter in Atlanta that illegal immigrants are enemies of America who must be dealt with severely.

“Stopping Hitler was worth the price,” the 89-year-old lawmaker said.

Speaking at a Georgia candidate forum last week, a moderator asked for ideas on dealing with illegal immigration in Georgia. The state shares borders with Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Yates began by saying he favors a tax on money sent from Georgia to Mexico, being that many undocumented residents do not pay an income tax.

Then, the World War II veteran kicked it up a notch or two.

“[The National Guard] ought to be armed and, if warned by leaflets dropped all over Mexico that says that we will shoot to kill if anybody crosses, and be serious about this — and if they do that then there won’t be anybody killed,” Yates said.

His opponent, Rose Carroll, a military spouse and former real estate broker, had a dramatically different answer, saying the issue of immigration demanded “compassion,” reminding Yates that many of the people he’d compared to Hitler are women and children.

“Instead of advocating taking up indiscriminate ‘shoot to kill’ policies or giving Georgians the unfair burden of shouldering huge expenses to fund enforcement of federal laws, I believe Georgia should work to remove the incentives driving illegal immigration,” she explained on her web site. ” I support tougher actions against businesses illegally employing those who are not authorized to work in this country, and encouraging our businesses to use existing resources such as E-Verify to level the playing field and make sure all businesses and employees have a fair shot at doing business.”

Asked to explain his “shoot to kill” remark, Yates told MyFox Atlanta that any invading force should be treated with the utmost hostility.

“Stopping Hitler was worth the price,” he said. “It’s our border, they’re invading us.”

Bill Nigut, Southeast Regional Director of Anti-Defamation League, called Yates’s statements “shocking and deeply disturbing” in a media advisory.

“The hate speech about undocumented workers has moved from the extreme edges of the debate into the mainstream,” he wrote. “The fact that an elected official of the Georgia General Assembly would feel comfortable about making such outrageous remarks proves that point.”

Both Yates and Carroll are running to represent Georgia’s 73rd state house district.

This video is from a Georgia candidates forum, published to YouTube on Oct. 12, 2010.

This video is from MyFox Atlanta, published Oct. 15, 2010.

If they were European people the old bigot wouldn’t be saying that. He’s exactly the type that would’ve strongly supported Hitler had he been born in Germany instead of the USA.

The 89 year old lawmaker. I am sick and tired of this whole fascination and ignorant reverence given to the so-called “greatest generation.” First off, we didn’t save the world from fascist tyranny, we took on the worst of the worst and became a tyrannical fascist force in this world. Secondly, these people are too old to deal with modern society, and clearly still addicted to the old-school war-horse ideology of American exceptionalism. He needs to be REMOVED from office and never allowed to run again, along with all the rest of these old people. NO MORE OLD PEOPLE IN GOVERNMENT!! NONE!! We need to have a cutoff age of 65. After that, NO MORE. You’re done. Over finished done gone and OUT. It’s these old fucks and their ilk who have failed us from the start. Our current situation in this nation is the direct result of their own doing, and for the American people to even PERMIT them to run for office again and again and again until they’re older than dirt. They’ve still got the same ideologies, theories, causes, and techniques. Nothing has changed or gotten better under any of these people and it is absolutely THE time to get rid of them once and for all. He has to go, along with the rest of the WWII obsessed greatest generation catamites that suck up to them.

Come on Yates go out there and shoot to kill. Go ahead John, don’t worry, G-d doesn’t really care about the sixth commandment! At least not when John Yates does the murdering! John Yates typical Georgian Republican!

That guy is nuts, obviously. We became an economic powerhouse after WWII mostly because we were not bombed besides Pearl Harbor and a few minor ballon bombs.

Just about all of Europe needed goods, services, and rebuilding. WWII also got us out of the Great Depression, so you had a whole generation of workers who remembered that period and were happy to be employed no matter what the conditions.

Now, much of the world has caught up to us and right wingers act like that is some terrible thing. People all over the world want a good standard of living. Right Wingers seem to think these people want to take something away from us.

They miss the dirty commies. What a great boogieman that was.

Seems few`politicians ever want to relinquish their power/prestiage like Thurman, Byrd, Kennedy, ect. regardless of age or health condition. Really, if a school bus driver was an elected position would you vote for an 89 year old? Its a shame people don’t view elected officials with the same consideration and importence. All you need to get elected is lots of money, plenty of negative ads, and a promise to your party to keep the status quo.

But their members do not really give a D…
There is something wrong when these people hear their republican candidates talk about not respecting & trashing our constitution , bill or rights , laws , democracy , citizens while trying to say they believe in all the above.
This is why the republican candidates stick to their corporate republican news ( if this is what you wish to call them) organizations and refuse to go on a real news media with real questions about what they are for and what their policies are.

Oh, please. Members of the Greatest Generation are rapidly dying off and won’t be with us for very long, including this guy, who may be suffering from the early stages of dementia anyway. I mean, there are so many reasons why immigrants are NOTHING like Hitler (they have no power and what kind of threat do they represent? Even Meg Whitman and a few other candidates have been willing to employ them …). So perhaps the guy is nuts, but your anger against all of these folks, who gave strength to this country, is misplaced. At least they had a deep respect for education, did not expect things to be given to them and had a good work ethic.

Talk about crapping in the punchbowl. Obviously immigration from Mexico is a HUGE problem and it’s deliberately not being dealt with by the Federal Gov’t which has every obligation to secure that border. It follows also that with the drugs and gangs overwhelming certain border states that any patrols ought to be armed but they should also have rules of engagement that don’t condone indiscriminate killing of aliens – in some cases I’m sure deportation would be a more appropriate response!

Seems to me that the writer has a problem with people over the age of 65 serving in public office regardless if they are members of the “greatest” generation, boomers or whatever.

I also agree with the writer as it has been my experience that the elderly are usually confused about the modern world. Do we really want someone that old making decisions on Net Neutrality? How about abortion, the draft or marijuana? The guy in this story was born in 1921. Can you even imagine what kind of crazy racist sh*thole Georgia was in 1921? Can you really?

    There. Proved you wrong.

Or let’s put a different spin on those stats: the rate of Black male incarceration per 100,000 population in South Africa 1993 [under Apartheid]: 851; In the US under George Bush 2004: 4,919. Or 5.8 times higher than the worst racist regime in the world at the time.

This goober is living in his own fantasy land. “Killing sheriffs and various things down there?” What the hell is he talking about? There have been NO law enforcement officers killed by illegals or drug smugglers. NO beheadings, despite what our less than honest governor (Jan Brewer) has been purporting. There was one deputy sheriff slightly wounded in a shootout in Pinal County, far away from the border, under circumstances that were, to put it mildly, more than questionable. Yates has never been here (Cochise County) and blithely recommends the murder of men, women and children. Illegal immigration and the border have been used as a political tool by right wing fanatics and cynical pols, who are aided and abetted by dishonest and lazy journalists who spend very little or no time at all on the border. But this nut job takes the prize for ignorance and stupidity.

Yates is very very wrong when he says the federal government has abandoned or neglected its role of border enforcement. There are almost 1,000 Border Patrol agents stationed at Douglas and Naco here in Cochise County alone. Lots more in Pima County to the west and Hidalgo County, NM to the east. You can’t travel down a state highway, county road or most cow paths without running into one.

The problem is that federal policy regarding immigration and drugs is a sick joke. The number of Border Patrol agents could be doubled or tripled and people and drugs would still get through.

Folks, most of what you read in the media about the border is just plain bullshit. There is no “brown invasion” as is reported on Fox News and people don’t constantly live in fear. We don’t lock our doors most of the time and have NEVER been victims of crime. But to say that it’s business as usual in Cochise County won’t sell ad space on TV or in newspapers.

I had forgotten the “stupid” factor before I moved back here after many years absence. Georgia IS a backwater. We have one of the worst school systems in the country, highest unemployment rates and a vigorous Tea Party movement filled with people who have no idea about how government actually works, or how “big bidness” runs the state. This is a former agricultural/textile industry state born of slavery, both the traditional and very minimum wage sort. Education is/has not been a priority for these types of business. An educated citizenry won’t work for proverbial peanuts. I contend that the only reason Georgia still exists as a state is to make Alabama and Mississippi look good.

Aside from your inability to form coherent sentences, you’re making a false equivalency. Putting “people in a category” can be done in one of two ways.. one is bullshit and called bigotry, the other is reality based and called categorizing. When 90% of the people of a certain “characteristic” share another characteristic, your observations are reality based and might hold merit (other tests obviously apply).

In this case, most people over the age of 80 have seriously diminished intellectual capacity. Not all, but most. A very large portion of the population of 70 to 80 year olds are rapidly deteriorating intellectually. It stands to reason, then, that people between the ages of 70 and 80 are suspect of not having the intellectual capacity to “govern well”, while those over 80 MOSTLY are not qualified.

I’m not suggesting we have an absolute cutoff for office, but anyone over the age of 70 should be closely scrutinized by the public and media if that person is running for office. Yet, in America, we don’t really learn anything about ANY candidate that isn’t on a 30 second commercial just about election time.

“The internet is not some flat bed truck! It’s a series of tubes!”. Sorry, but that’s too old and too ignorant to be the chair of the Technology Committee.

And ask yourself why these people are in office for 8, 10, 12 terms and working LONG past retirement age. And ask yourself why they keep making policy that holds this country back while enriching the very few. — term limits at a minimum, and -maybe- an upper limit of 70 or 75 years old, since that’s when the mind “typically tends to go”.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

you’re comparing 65 to 90? .. 65 is retirement age, that’s the time we’re supposed to be “relaxing and enjoying the fruits of our lives”.

The point is that near and after 70 the rate of decline in intellectual capacity diminishes quickly in most of the population, and the public needs to pay better attention to those “older candidates”.. as it is, we ‘party ticket’ vote and never learn jack about who’s trying to set policy. Deluded old people is only a part of the problem, the bigger problem is the disengaged public.

Candidates who fail to achieve a minimum score should not be seated. It’s not necessarily *age* that’s the problem per se — Bernie Sanders is the best possible example of a fiery progressive, and he’s well past 65. Bertrand Russell was arrested at the age of 96 in anti-VN war demonstrations. He was also far more intelligent and intellectually able than most of his peers, even at an advanced age. It’s not age we should be looking at but mental fitness. I’d rather have a 90-y.o. Bertrand Russell making policy for me than a 40-y.o. Christine O’Donnell.

Term limits are NOT a good idea for those of us who are happy with our legislators. I’m sure Bernie Sanders’ constituents (or Pete Stark’s, or Barbara Lee’s, or Anthony Weiner’s) would be happy to keep electing them until they no longer wanted office.

No, I am not comparing 65 to 90 and no not everyone wants to retire at 65. For some working is the “fruit” of their lives. My point was to consider Term Limits, so no one overstays until they can no longer function. I know some 30 to 40 somethings that have a more diminished intellectual capacity than some at 60′s or 70′s. Christine O’Donnell for one, Sara Palin etc.

So people like this nutcase can get elected until they die if the people of Georgia like him. The fact that he is a total waste of time is of no consequence? I am also a fan of Mr. Stark, however, Term Limits could be for 20/30 years, as most are in their
early 30′s, they would be out somewhere in their mid 50′s/60′s. Term Limits would also get fires burning under these people’s butts.

I get what you are saying but how do you get our elected officials to agree to a “mental fitness” test. Would this “test” test for racism? stupidity?

I have observed that people tend to hold the attitudes and beliefs that were cemented in them as young adults. If you want your elected official to have a 1940′s world view then go ahead and elect a 90 year old. I would much rather have someone with a modern world view.

We are being invaded by germans? Or did he mean Jews? Or does he mean he expects them to invade Russia this fall? Or is the u.s. like russia and mexico is like germany? That would explain why tea baggers seem to be embracing communism. I say we just give mexico the whole southern half of the u.s and then problem solved.

What bidness really like is a labor force that can’t vote. They got used to that during slavery and Jim Crow. Now they want to continue that with Latinos without documents. I am willing to bet that the majority of Yates’ campaign contributors make their money from the sweat of undocumented people that work for below minimum wages and no benefits.
    Vote the bastard out.

That would certainly be effective…..or the illegals would just bring their own guns and shoot back. Best way to stop illegal immigration is to put up a gnarly fence and maybe some velociraptors with rocket launchers on their backs.

This friggin idiot actually holds public office?? A shoot to kill order for the Mexican Border? Somebody needs to wake this fool up and remind him that we are NOT North Korea or former East Germany. I think we should eliminate the cause of the illegal immigrant problem. Maybe he’d like to suggest that we shoot the employers who hire them? Bet that would fix it. But wait, I have a better idea. Just put them in jail…for a few days, the first time, then longer, lots longer.

The man is clearly senile. Good going Georgia.

What is happening to the Republican Party?? They are becoming the party of the hate more than the party of the people! Georgia’s Republican State Rep. Straw man. I never made those statements. Term limits are defined by the number of terms, not the number of years. Pete Stark has been a good Rep for forever, and he always will be. It’s his nature. He’s a fighter, and he talks to his constituents, and he doesn’t suffer fools gladly. If he got termed out, his constituency would suffer, at least for a while, since there are few like him. On the other hand, you have a point. The thought of ScreechyBarbie O’Donnell sitting in the Senate forever, growing moldy without developing a new thought is enough to terrify.

It is already a disgrace that people with such an obtuse view of the world still exist. It is to OUR shame that these characters get elected. If I were to assume that Mr. Yates is not a racist, then, following his rationale, those that park illegally should also be shot. This would assume that his motives (I refuse to call them “reasons”) are more related to protecting the law by killing those who break it.

Yet, Mr. Yates does not advocate that kind of punishment for anybody who breaks the law, only for foreigners. These foreigners have not committed a violent crime. Not having papers to live in the country is an administrative fault, just like not carrying insurance or being late in paying your taxes.

Mr. Yates is afraid that foreigners will destroy the country by WORKING. He has chosen to ignore that it was our brightest and most brilliant AMERICANS, recruited from the Ivy League by Wall Street firms, that created the biggest assault on the American middle class. Estúpido.

Yates is 100% correct. The Only reason our country is great is because of his generation and the ones that came before were willing to fight to the death for principles. Principles such as defending our national sovereignty. Principles such as using the needed force, up to deadly force, when applicable to defend ourselves. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Yates said, remember he is part of our greatest generation. They did what only a small fraction of the world was willing to do and stand up to fascist invasion and Murder. We took the fight to them and defeated them. America is under attack and a full scale invasion is underway, these illegal aliens kill 25 Americans a day, 9,125 a year. that is more deaths here on American soil each year than on the 9/11 attack. The 9/11 attack outraged Americans and we went to war over it, In Afghanistan we shoot to kill and no one cries foul. what is different here?
Only difference here is that the Illegal Aliens are also raping and killing our children. I have served in Afghanistan and Iraq and I would be proud to defend our borders from invasion, killing the enemy if need be if the enemy forces the issue. I would, in fact, rather serve to protect our borders than go back to Afghanistan again. The enemy is amongst us killing us and we are to slow to realize what is going on. Wake up and pay attention.

Illegal Aliens are doing a lot more than just parking in the wrong spot! you try to pretend they are just here to work. They are less than 5% of the Population yet they make up 22% of all federal prison inmates (28% if you include Immigration offenses) That is a very disproportionate rate, they have no respect for our Laws, that is why they are commiting violent crimes rapes murder forgery conspiracy human slavery drug dealing and gang activity etc at a rate 4 times highr than American citizens! They cost Legal Citizens between 113 to 350 BILLION a year in money that should have been spent on us and OUR children. They are responsible for a minimum of 86 Hospitals going out of business, economic chaos in the border states and a host of disease being spread that were formerly wiped out. They cost in Human Life alone is good enough for me that we should halt this invasion now. These (workers) you so fondly speak of are nothing more than criminals who have broken into our homes to steal as much as they can get.
