O’Donnell admits using campaign cash to pay rent

Christine O’Donnell, the Republican candidate for Senate from Delaware, has admitted to using campaign funds to pay part of the rent on her townhouse, potentially a violation of campaign finance laws. The Associated Press reports:

[O'Donnell] acknowledges using campaign money to pay part of the rent on her current town house. Her attorney maintains someone with the Federal Election Commission approved the arrangement, although the commission’s rules say candidates can’t use campaign money for their mortgage or rent “even if part of the residence is being used by the campaign.”

Last month, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington declared that O’Donnell is “clearly a criminal” for allegedly using $20,000 of campaign money for personal expenses.

“Ms. O’Donnell has spent years embezzling money from her campaign to cover her personal expenses,” CREW’s executive director, Melanie Sloan, said. “Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on much these days, but both sides should agree on one point: thieves belong in jail not the United States Senate.”

    Um…what she did was ILLEGAL. She should recuse herself from the election. She a big enough embarrassment as it is. An ignorant fool.

    She talks when she should shut up, and shut’s up when she should talk … she is not like me.

    I’m not sure why anyone is wasting any more time on this has-
    been or washed-up two-bit politician. She’s history.

  • Anonymous

    No I want her to stay in the race … she is a whole lot better than wasting money on tv and radio ad time! She is truly the GOP candidate that keeps on giving.

  • Anonymous

    ehhhemm…you usually spend your “savings” before you hock your stuff…and how does someone who doesn’t work have savings in the 1st place?…i call bullshit…she would be no good in Washington anyway…she’s a terrible liar…

  • Anonymous

    So when she said she didn’t use campaign money for personal use, she lied. Not only lied but broke the law. Seems like she might make a fine politician. If she lied about that I wonder what else she lied about. Perhaps this is just the tip of the ice berg, and we will find out other sordid details of the other TEA baggers. I hope so.

  • Anonymous

    Giving her all possible breaks on her explanation, she is still a self-admitted failure who doesn’t know how to run her own life. And some people would be dumb enough to put her in charge of something?

    “O’Donnell’s financial past includes a tax lien from the IRS, a lawsuit from the university she attended over unpaid bills and a foreclosure action that she avoided by selling her house to her former campaign attorney before a sheriff’s auction.”

    “she struggled to get work.

    “I sold everything I own. I’m not kidding,” she said. “I sold jewelry. I liquidated all my assets. Now I’m living on my savings.”"

    Old news and Witch Christine is taking in as much money as possible to live off of until the next campaign. Tea Party members never saw it coming and Christine and Hannity are laughing all the way to the bank. Sarah Palin founded this career and others have just joined in.

    THE HELL SHE IS LIKE ME!
    She doesn’t know what she is doing and is feeding off other people by tricking them. She is pure evil!

  • LeftCoastLeftie

    With her vast understanding of election laws, and on the counsel of her attorney, the best she can come up with is “someone” approved it? Did any of her ‘team’ think to get something in writing with perhaps a name, date, and official statement? Or did they just hook up for a bowling date and high-fived each other to seal the deal?

    Delaware – are you embarrassed yet?

  • Anonymous

    Why is everyone so mad at her? When the teabaggers put this dimwit on the ballot they insured a democrat would win what was a republican senate seat.

    The only thing that bothers me is, like Palin, she will be yet another loud grating voice for the ill-informed, cynical wingnut part of the country. She’ll never be off the TV…

    Aside from the sheer entertainment value, we are looking at a 40 year old narcissistic woman who has lied about EVERYTHING and who has never held an elected office. Without Palin-the-Grifter’s endorsement and the money it brought, O’Donnell would be unknown.

    Maybe she’d have to find a real job. If that doesn’t work, bleach her hair and Fox can put her on a talk show.

    She should be in jail. If any of US did anything even CLOSE to this, we would be. Where’s the investigation? When are charges going to be filed? $20,000 is a fair chunk of change to the every day person, not a trifle that any of US would get away with stealing. Oh, that’s right, she keeps running as a republican, so there won’t be ANY charges filed.

    Well, unless this idiot has a get out of jail card, she should at least be dumped by her equally lunatic tea party. What a bunch of nut jobs. And they all belong to the GOP/tea party. This woman is the gift that keeps giving. The tea party that is supposed to revere the Constitution is filled with people as ignorant as this woman. People who do not understand the Constitution anymore than she does. Just a few vague references. Three things the party and the GOP continually focus on to gin up the masses. Abortion, guns, and money.

    This woman is not stupid. Just woefully and willfully ignorant. Just like the party she represents. The fact that they invented this person says volumes about who represent them.

  • Anonymous

    I don’t think Palin would let O’Donnell move in on her territory (“mama chicken” to her brood of rightwingnuts) – there’s only so much room on a stage for ditzy women – one’s entertaining, two gets boring fast. Amazing the Tea Partiers put this type in a general election (though to give credit, the Dems put Alvin “fix-the-S.C.-economy-by-selling-action-dolls-of-me” Greene). How can the Republicans project an image of FISCAL CONSERVATISM when someone like this represents their party?

    I’m very curious how “O’Donnell did with her “freelance public relations work” when the economy was cranking – I’d like to her from some of her clients. If her current PR efforts are any indication of her business, she didn’t do very well at it.

    Thank God for general elections. Hopefully normal people will vote.

    Actually, she sounds perfect for the Senate now that you mention it…

  • Anonymous

    Yeah… I think on non-social issues such as trade, regulations and such she will do exactly as told.

    I think if you read her bio on Wikipedia, you’ll see a natural route to her position–she can talk a good game. So I don’t think they create agents like this, I think they look for them and selectively give support and see who’ll get the job done.

    I see her as an opportunistic psychopathic serial liar but that’s just my opinion. That means that she may be using issues as launching platforms or she may really care about them but that there is no way to know.

    I think she’s one of those rare people, like Palin, who wins fans and followers primarily by exhibiting confidence.

  • Anonymous

    Read her wiki bio, there is a pattern of such behavior.

  • Anonymous

    The Tea Party won’t dump her. You know why? Because the moral barometer of these people is so out of whack that they think Sarah Palin is a hero (even though she’s ok with her grandson’s medical bills being covered by a “socialist” state welfare program in Alaska). Truly I tell you, these people don’t know the meaning of hypocrisy.

    Hmm, I thought O’Donnell originally said “she is me” because I’m not a witch, so neither is she. Now she tells me “she’s me” because she’s living off savings. Neither is true and in no way is Christine O’Donnell “me”. Some dumb PR person came up with the “I’m you” slogan – maybe this indicates her skills during her “freelance PR work”.

    http://www.zoominfo.com/people/O%27Donnell_Christine_-504003.aspx
    Quite a bit on O’Donnell here, but nothing that indicates qualification to be a senator. As expected, her strong suit is social conservatism, with nothing about Fiscal Conservatism, numbers, or logic period. Interesting to see an association with Mel Gibson’s film:
    “A devout Catholic, Christine combined her faith with her God given talent working as an independent marketing consultant on Mel Gibson’s breakthrough film The Passion of the Christ. In addition to developing the pre-release marketing campaign and advanced ticketing program, Christine was also the marketing and media director of the book tour for Inside the Passion, the critically acclaimed best seller offering a behind the scenes look at the making of the film.”

  • Anonymous

    While I agree with Christine that anyone can have financial troubles, she repeatedly lies about hers, saying the tax lien was a mistake and the foreclosure was a mistake, posting letters on her website saying they cleared her when they did no such thing. She wanted us to believe that she had a college degree that had been earned in 1993, except her campaign manager said in an interview that she had one course left to take in order to obtain the degree. The failure of Fairleigh Dickinson to grant a degree to Miss O’Donnell had nothing to do with her not paying her tuition but her lack of finishing all required coursework. This has been printed in many different publications yet O’Donnell repeatedly pretends it is because she owed money on her college loans. She has also claimed during prior elections in 2006 & 2008 that she had acquired her Bachelor’s degree in 1993.

    Now we have her claiming that she spoke to “someone at the FEC” who said it was OK for her to use campaign money to pay her rent despite written guidelines that claim the process to be illegal. Did they say the same thing about her utility bills at the townhome she is renting? Are they also included in these new, special rules for Christine O’Donnell?

    The Tea Party obviously has a very unique set of guidelines for candidates they endorse. As long as they say they are constitutional conservatives, disagree with everything proposed by President Obama, they can lie, cheat, send disgusting email, show little to no regard for their own personal finances and still be considered an ideal choice for the TP.

    Thankfully, the majority of this country is not ready to follow these people over the edge of the cliff!

    Her attorney maintains someone with the Federal Election Commission approved the arrangement, although the commission’s rules say candidates can’t use campaign money for their mortgage or rent “even if part of the residence is being used by the campaign.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yeah right.
    WHO from the Federal Election Commission approved the arrangement, WHEN did they approve the arrangement and WHY would they approve this arrangement, that goes against their unwavering rules, WHERE is the documentation on this “alleged” approval, WHERE is the application that O’Donnell sent for this exception to the rules, and WHAT criteria and exceptions does O’Donnell know about that the rest of the country doesn’t?
    Just as O’Donnell claims that there is no separation of church and state in the constitution and insists that she “exposed” her opponent for not knowing this during the debate, her lawyer may say whatever he wants as well, it just doesn’t mean that he is telling the truth.
    Imagine that, a lawyer telling a lie!
The economy is shit there because of the neocons…and that state and everyone in it is so broke its ridiculous. It gets better. Don’t lose hope.
    For the record, some of us Christians think that greed and self-righteousness are bigger problems than what body parts teenagers touch. We’re more into helping people and showing love than telling people what’s wrong with them.
    O’Donnell’s version of Christianity is all for show and for her own glory. It’s exactly what Jesus despised.
    As someone else commented, I’d like a name to go with the “someone with the Federal Election Commission” who said it was okay to use campaign funds to pay rent, when all I’ve heard makes it clear that can’t be done even if a portion of the residence is used for campaign purposes (this sounds correct since it’s something that could easily be taken advantage of – like spending $150K of funds on designer clothing for “campaign purposes”).
    Can’t believe much this chick says- the list is endless. From Wikipedia: “She [O'Donnell] claimed that she had studied at Oxford University in England but that claim was called “misleading” by The Washington Post as she took only a course run by an unaffiliated institution that was renting space at Oxford.”
    $20K on rent is a pittance compared to $150K on designer campaign clothing.
    What ever happened to those clothes anyway? I heard they were going to get donated to a homeless shelter (would be better to raffle off the stuff to some Palinians and donate the money; no homeless person needs a $500 suit jacket, but $150K could buy a lot of soup or Thanksgiving dinners).
  • Anonymous
    Ah, I saw this headline (and remember it)
    “Palin backlash continues as Republican lawyers head to Alaska to take back her $150,000 campaign clothes”, but I never did hear what happened.
    And this is the kind of “persecution by the Lamestream Media” that drove Palin to quit her job – it was all self generated and O’Donnell is doing the same. If they can’t handle criticism for doing stupid things, they shouldn’t do stupid things.
    Wikipedia said O’Donnell collected $4M to fund the general election, mostly from out of state – the reference article from Delaware Online says $2M “according to O’D's website”. Plan will be to “carpet bomb” Delaware with ads (she lost me with the “I’m you” ad – any others would be entertaining, and too many would get boring fast). The drive to get her elected is from outside the state and doesn’t have Delaware’s best interest in mind. She won the primary with only 30000 votes (about 1% of the population) – hopefully more will show up for the general election and send her packing.
    Rhode Island? A state? I thought that was just an urban legend.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    Oy vey indeed.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    Well it is, just not as smelly.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    Thank the “Reagan Democrats” for this.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    Would somebody tell me this “God’s” telephone number these folks keep using? The Nova Police need to have a few words with the phony.
    Rangel, Waters, Obama, and list still goes on!
    Personally I ‘d rather have a real wiccan in office than one of these damned “Christians.”
    Pick Your Reason
    When your friends can’t explain why they voted for Democrats, give them this list. They can then pick a reason.
    10. I voted Democrat because I believe oil companies’ profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn’t.
    9. I voted Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
    8. I voted Democrat because Freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
    7. I voted Democrat because I’m way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.
    6. I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don’t start driving a Prius.
    5. I voted Democrat because I’m not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies through abortion so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.
    4. I voted Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits.
    3. I voted Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the democrats see fit.
    2. I voted Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.
    1. I voted Democrat because my head is so firmly planted up my Butt that it is unlikely that I’ll ever have another point of view.
    I’ll keep my Freedom, my God and my Guns… You keep the Change…
    Get out and vote November 2nd, 2010
    You think John Lindsay and Ed Koch were criminals? There was a time before Nixon’s “southern strategy” when there were many honest Republicans. Remember, 80% of northern Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act. More than northern democrats, by percentage. You obviously weren’t paying attention in your early years.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    Funny.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    No, I wouldn’t be screaming “y’all” anything. That’s more like you southern Republicrats.”
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    I never called myself a “true patriot.” Anyone who supports this blood-soaked government in any way is not a patriot. They are complicit.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    More like Abbott and Costello in their “Who’s on First?” routine.
  • Benway for the Nova Police
    You must have us confused with the southern Dixiecrats. You do understand that Ronnie was a liberal before he got Alzheimer’s? I didn’t think so.
    A story floating around the internet…
    Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
    All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
    He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
    In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
    Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
    He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
    Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
    If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
    It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
    Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
    Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
    He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
    The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
    He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.
    Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”
    She can’t name a single Democratic member of Congress. She can’t name a single decision by SCOTUS she disagrees with. She uses campaign funds to pay her apartment rent. Don’t get me started on her views on sex; cohabitation with a man while not married and she wants to tell people not to masturbate. What is up with the Repugnacants?
