Pelosi: GOP victory will make America a ‘plutocracy,’ ‘oligarchy’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday said the United States would be ceded to plutocrats and oligarchs if Republicans win next month’s election, referring to the flood of pro-GOP corporate election spending.

“This election is also about our democracy,” Pelosi said on MSNBC’s “Countdown With Keith Olbermann.” “If they win — which I fully intend to stop them from doing — but if they win, it would mean we are now a plutocracy and oligarchy.”

“Whatever these few wealthy, secret, unlimited sources of money are can control our entire agenda,” she said.

The first female speaker struck an unmistakably ominous tone about wealthy groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and Crossroads GPS spending a fortune bankrolling campaigns — overwhelmingly for Republicans — while concealing their sources of funding.

“It is essential and fundamental to our democracy that we not have it be a wholly owned subsidiary of these corporations, and as a part of the Chamber of Commerce,” Pelosi said.

The influx of unlimited and secret election spending, made possible by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling this January, has led to rich business interests mobilizing in an unprecedented way to topple Democrats from power and back the most conservative candidates.

Pelosi regretted that Democrats failed to pass the Disclose Act, which would force election donors to reveal their identities, and blamed Republicans for unanimously blocking it.

“We couldn’t get one Republican to say disclosure is the right thing to do,” she said.

Republicans argue that money spent on influencing elections is merely about free speech and should not be restricted or examined too closely.

By the reckonings of some election analysts — including the New York Times’ Nate Silver and Stuart Rothenberg — Republicans appear poised to win back enough seats to retake the House of Representatives.

Pelosi’s remarks, less than two weeks away from a highly consequential election, reflect Democrats’ strategy in the final push to warn voters that the fabric of American society would be at risk if the current crop of Republicans take control.

“They give new meaning to the term ‘Buy American,’” she said. “They want to buy these elections.”

The videos are from MSNBC’s Countdown, broadcast Thursday, Oct. 21.

As if Amerika is not an oligarchy already?

    Yes, exactly.
Where has Pelosi been? In a coma?

Yes well maybe taking jail off the table for the criminals wasn’t such a good idea after all. I will never be fooled aging into voting for a non progressive. Change will never happen if we keep rewarding this group of spineless coroporate sellouts

And don’t give me that lessor of two evils crap. Evil is evil.

If Nancy had not taken “impeachment off the table” perhaps Dubya’s mess wouldn’t be so messy to clean up!

    Excellent.

Perfect time for a little fearmongering of our own.
The Repubs have been doing that for 2 years non-stop and it has lost its bite.
The Repub strategy of using Pelosi/Reid as a Boogiemen strawmen was not very smart.
They are both very good politicians.
They weren’t picked for Speaker and Majority leader for their looks, although Nancy isn’t bad. LOL

Actually corporations are EXACTLY the reason for their current problems, especially Dick Armey’s groups, Karl Rove’s groups, and the Koch Bros.

Is she serious? She has an estomated wealth of somewhere between $30 and $130 million dollars based on Federal Finance Disclosure forms. She was the one who demended a military jet to fly her between California and Washingto when her broom would do just fine. So when she starts calling the kettle black because of the amount of money they can spend she needs just to look at her wealth and see what is wrong with politicians who buy their way into a cuchy job.

Flag waving patriots will soon have to make a decision about paying more taxes or bringing the boys back home. Uncle Sam is out of cash and he cannot keep borrowing from China, he must raise taxes in order to pay the costs of war. There is little doubt that patriots will choose to bring the boys back home, but they can still wave their flags.

Sadly this nation had been moving towards and has become an oligarchy long ago, when I was a kid, and I am older than dirt.

But lets be clear, what most people call oligarchy is technically a Plutarch (rule by the rich) oligarchy you and I speak of now includes the bloodlines (kings etc) which is a very important point and requires people actually know the definition.

It’s one of those things a politician might say when he or she is trying to avoid coming out and saying there are hereditary factors at play, not just vast and unchecked wealth.

So technically she just spilled the beans. Was it intensional or did she just no completely understand the difference between the two words.

When they say Oligarchy they mean it.

A play on words compounded in complexity by the advent of the corporation as a human being (by way of rights).

And in case you are still gippering the hell out on the subject of Ayan Rand bullshit the word has seen plenty of this and they never did shit for the poor except make more of them. And Reagan raised taxes at the end of the day didn’t he, so blah blah.

    Bye bye Miss American Pie

Well, if you let the Repugs win without forcing them to state what they would do differently

They will say that you gave them a man-date to do what they want with your butt.
Show history that Bush-Republican thinking was vindicated for all its previous criminality by America’s repudiation of the Democrats after Republis ‘won the war’ in Iraq and Afghanny, and saved American from Banker-terrorist attacks, etc (in their words…)

B-R’s don’t want to talk about what they are going to do differently…
And I keep thinking, “WHY WOULD ANYONE VOTE FOR THEM!”
I can ONLY think that a “REPUBLICAN WIN” is just the B-R way of suggesting to some

Yeah right, like it wasn’t already a plutocracy already. Either way way lose. It’s over people, and it’s all YOUR fault. If you EVER voted for a Republican OR a Democrat, then stand up and declare your part in this, because you were part of it. We’ve had years upon years to move away from that, but now it’s far too late. You can’t vote your way out of this. The ONLY way out of this mess is for each and every American in this country to DO something. But most importantly, unless each and every one of you with a son or daughter in the military can convince your child to immediately stop following orders and PROTECT YOU, then you can do something. But if you don’t have the military behind you, and you don’t, you’re fucked. Because when any idiot tries to stand up, they’ll be stomped down, and it’ll be our own sons and daughters who do it. All in the name of protecting America, too!! Then, when it’s all over said and done, and the tribunals and new Nuremberg trials go down, your sons and daughters are all going to say they were only following orders. We’ve been there and done that, and STILL nobody learned a damn thing. As obsessed as we are with WWII in this country and our cinematic industry, we sure haven’t learned anything, because we’re headed down that very same road. Only this time WE’RE the Nazis. Isn’t it a shame? Happened again. Death camps haven’t happened yet, but unless we do something RIGHT NOW, THIS MOMENT, STARTING WITH OUR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS (enlisted or not), then we’ll simply just keep going down that road, and it really WILL be too late.

I have to agree with Pelosi in that if Republicans win this election, the government may lean more towards an oligarchy, especially considering the recent blocking of bills in the senate. A good example to describe their oligarch-ish tendencies would be the vote on healthcare reform. If the bill were to be passed as it was presented, many more people would be able to get coverage under an affordable plan. That in turn would hurt company profits, companies who donate to republicans to stop the bill. However, it would not be safe to automatically assume that all democrats are the better choice in the elections. The simple matter of the fact is that people need to stop being the furious flag waving patriots and educate themselves by reading their news from multiple sources. Take more political science classes at school. And then maybe, just maybe people will be able to realize that America is not a great nation, rather it has the potential to be one. Patriotism, to me, means the ability to realize your nations mistakes and attempt to rectify them by any means necessary

  • Hologram5

Wrong. A Republican victory will turn us into a corporatocracy

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/FZTCSW3ROOZH6M567RKPDFVRAY Donald

The corporate oligarchy, occupying and controlling both political parties and the government, took control in 1999 and its been a rout of constitutional government and the American dream every year thereafter.

It took a corrupt, criminal, bipartisan effort paid for by the corporate elite to drive the nation, once again, into an oncoming 2nd great depression.

Pelosi forgets that the voter is better informed of what has actually been taking place and just will not buy the poison rhetoric spewing from the mouths and minds of both corrupted parties. DON’T VOTE!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HF6V37D6JRZC7LATOJY2EL2IZU Manny

Impeach Roberts and Alito for lying to the Senate during confirmation. They have been the most activist court ever when it comes to legislating from the bench. The states can strip corporations of personhood and the supreme court couldn’t do a thing about it. This action alone would go a long way to salvaging something resembling a democratic republic from what both parties have wrought.

  • Joey Tavares

Gee, I dunno. Me, I live close to my work – I move for the job. In Pelosi’s position, would I choose a private jet paid for by the taxpayer or first class on commercial flights?

This was all going on way before 1999, in America, I think it began in 1913 when the Fedeeral Reserve became our unconstitutional central bank.

The first great depression was a result of the same thing. The stock market has been crashed intentionally in a successful attempt by the big banks and our big Government to seize more control and power.

If you don’t vote than nothing will EVER change. We need people to run for office that know about all this fraud, people like…you guessed it, Ron Paul.

note to liberals, as the Speaker of the House, Pelosi has damn near dictatorial powers when it comes to deciding which bills reach the floor or not. as all military spending is discretionary and must be voted on every two yrs, IF the neoLiB WARMONGERS really wanted to END GWB’s ILLEGAL WARS/OCCUPATIONS, all she had to do in 2006, is to let the previous fiscal budget to expire.

    SHE DIDN’T.

Thursday, October 21st on Keith Olberman’s Countdown Nancy Pelosi said: “If they were to win, it would mean that we are now pl… Putocracy not Oligarchy.” Throughout history oligarchies have been tyrannical. Oligarchies rely on public servitude to exist. (read George Orwell’s 1984). When one of their own goes off the plantation he is met with swift severance from the team (see; Juan Williams).

The tyranny of the oligarchy is evident in NPR’s recent treatment of Mr. Williams by violating his right under the First Amendment to the Constitution. The tyranny of the oligarchy is evident with passing bills (laws) without the consent of the public. Soon to be rectified. VOTE November 2nd.

Within our political class structure wealth, family ties, educational hybrid, determine the efficacy of candidates to run for office. All other’s outside the realm of influence are setting themselves up to be mocked, humiliated, disrespected and belittled by the influence peddlers taking orders from the corporate forces behind the power structures that wield control over our incomes, our consumption and our children.

Not only does the Speaker of the House (third in line of succession to the presidency) mispronounce Plutocracy by saying a Plutocracy is NOT Oligarchy she must consider the democrat control of Congress an oligarchy. Is a American an oligarchy or is it a representative democracy? Is America to be governed by the few or by the many?

Today Americans “we the people” despise plutocrats as much as we despise oligarchs. What I believe ALL Americans seek in their political elites is 1. transparency 2. honesty 3. justice

It is easier to deal behind closed doors in secret, it is just as easy to be dishonest and it is easy to look the other way when an injustice is done. It is time to unlock the doors to secrecy, find people of integrity and good moral judgement to do the just thing for ALL Americans.

I find it still amazing that people are wholly ignorant of even the most obvious qualities of our nation. It’s ridiculous when people will literally deny anything that contradicts what they ‘want’ to believe, and make up excuses to justify doing so. I’m beginning to understand why authoritarian people such as Lenin and Mao preferred a “vanguard” or an elite to pave the way. It also explains why most Anarchists have been largely unsuccessful and every large scale attempt that did succeed was crushed by external forces.

People are too unwilling to see and become psychologically dependent on the system. Its a sad thing to see one go through a crisis of faith, generally changing a person entirely. I think we all need to abandon any hope of any big change from the top. We’re on a one way road, whether we have democrats or Republicans.

We need to stop denying and stalling. We all know what we need to do.

Well….the real economists. I believe Karl Polanyi wrote about this back in the ’40s in his book titled, The Great Transformation.

  • Anonymous

So…you are saying that old farts may have some worth after all?

Let’s not react so quickly here…..

  • Anonymous

Ya know….if only she would wear a mask, whenever I see her photo I begin shuddering uncontrollably….

  • Anonymous

What exactly is Pelosi right about? You mean her support for offshoring all the jobs in America?

Or not going after war criminals Cheney and Bush? I’m confused….please elaborate.

  • Anonymous

Teabagger to citizen: Don’t worry, Nancy, I never planned to have that oligarchy surgery on my eyeballs….

  • Anonymous

Voted for every “free trade” agreement to hasten it, I believe (one who reads all the faux crat’s voting records, and fully understands the only Dem in the Senate is Senator Russ Feingold, and the only Dems in the House are Kucinich, Defazio and Kaptur and Grayson, sure wish they DLC hadn’t voted out McKinney.

  • Anonymous

If you do vote, please check on the accuracy of those voting machines.

    Mine never seem to work…..

  • Anonymous

    “will…”????

You been hiding under a rock all this time?

  • Anonymous

I voted for a few Libertarian judges.
They make fine judges, when they’re sane.

  • Anonymous

1913? That was also the year of the oil depletion allowance and the income tax.

    The trinity of evil…..

Ron Paul, and the entire Paul family, are looney tunes.

As a former labor organizer, the unions died in 1980 when they supported Reagan.

    Dead as dead can be…..

Absolutely slayer, they have experienced things that us younger folks haven’t. That brings wisdom.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know where you’ve been Nancy, but the U.S. and the rest of the “civilized” world already is an oligarchy!

  • Anonymous

Is Nancy becoming a master of the obvious? This country has been an oligarchy since the 80s. Just look at the last few years. We have been run by imense wealth from the Military Industrial complex, the insurance industry, the energy (oil and gas) industry. The health industry including Pharmaceuticals and Wall Street,(banking) Did anything for the people these groups objected to ever get passed in Congress? Certainly not health and banking reform. What was passed was what they allowed. In the 90s we had Richard Mellon Scaife trying to topple Clinton and now we have the Koch brothers trying to topple Obama. This is a democracy? Bullshit.

  • Rush Goofbaugh

Voting for one war criminal (dem) is just as bad as voting for another war crimial (repuks). On the same order as child molester…. both totally avoidable acts of will.

  • Rush Goofbaugh

No shit Nancy…. any time you take impeachment “off the table”… YOU are the enemy…. and deserve to have your ass kicked by those you have abandonded.

  • crash2parties

Ha, ha, ha. Oh, Nancy you are a funny one. Don’t forget “theocracy”, since you definately fit in with that group as well:

” Pelosi’s status as a multi-millionaire property tycoon is germane in analyzing her above policy decisions. Under law, she has declared she owns with her husband two vineyards in St. Helena and Rutherford, Calif., worth from $6-26 million. The Pelosis also own six California properties worth from $3-11 million. There are many more millions of dollars worth of real estate and stock owned solely by her husband Paul, but she hasn’t yet had to specify exactly how much and has only given ballpark figures. Of note, in their portfolio is part ownership of the luxurious CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA, which they were granted a permit to build in 1996 only if they created natural habitats for several local endangered species. To date, these habitats still have not been built. The golf course has also been cited for polluting groundwater. They have hired lobbyists to fight the regulations. ”

“Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spoke last week [May 10th, 2010] at the Catholic Community Conference and urged Catholic priests and bishops to talk up immigration reform from their pulpits. Pelosi reportedy stated, “The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me … say, ‘We want you to pass immigration reform,’ and I said, I want you to speak about it from the pulpit.” Pelosi went on to say that, “Some (who) oppose immigration reform are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the gospels.”

  • Rush Goofbaugh

No let’s not do that…. I’m sure they would fuck up Siberia. How about we outsource them to space… I’m pretty sure they couldn’t fuck up a vacuum.

Oh, Raw Story, who will you turn to when your Champion is defeated and can no longer use its position of power and privilege to impose taxes and levies upon The People?

You will have to increase your bacon budget to 10X its current level is what you’ll have to do! Probably change your tampon, too.

John Byrne will have to sell one of his kidneys to make up for all the kickbacks you’ll no longer be getting from the Dummycrat party.

Nancy where was your voice on 9/11 when Bush Jr sabotaged our constitution then started several wars on false pretense? You had a chance to stop him instead your response was “impeaching Bush is OFF THE TABLE”! You are a hypocrite BITCH!!!

Typical, now that she is getting her ass handed to her on a plate, and only now, is she starting to speak out. Now that it is common knowledge. Well, Nancy, dont let the door hit you on the way out.

amen to that brother…she’s a toothless housepet when we need a pitbull to protect us. What a waste of cells. I’m usually just amazed that the DNC manages to get their people to even show up for votes with her ‘leadership’.

Yeah, right. In France, striking is a god given right to every citizen, and part of their constitution, (which, I might add, they uphold…) The US would only riot if their playstations went on the blink. And then it would only be “vitual rioting.”

That cant be true. Obama isnt related to Cheney, Clinton or Bush….
    Oh, wait….. sorry.

  • yvonneo

It started long before 1913–in fact, corporate powers never went away after the Revolutionary War–they just went covert. Remember, the SCOTUS in the late 1800s ruled that corporations had the same rights as flesh and blood people–that one ruling was an act of treason IMO. (And you might be surprised to know that the British Crown is regarded as a corporation.) And these corporate powers have been working to undermine our democratic republic since literally day one of our nation’s founding. History is repeating itself.

This is what is so frustrating to me about the tea party movement. Too many of them don’t understand who the real enemy is and as a result, they’re unwittingly being used to further the corporate takeover of the peoples’ govt–the same corporate interests our founders fought and died to free us from.

Our constitution was written expressly with the intent of making it a govt comprised of the people, ruled by the people, for the benefit of the people, not of, by and for the benefit of corporations–which is what’s happening today. Yet the tea party movement has been convinced that the peoples’ govt is the enemy. So, basically, they’re saying we the people are the enemy. Now whose agenda do you suppose is being advanced by this confusion? It’s these too big to fail corporations–the international banksters/multinational corporations–which is why they’re spending literally 100s of millions of dollars to influence our elections. And which politicians are receiving the bulk of that money? Those are the guys (left or right) that we need to be rid of.

Our founding fathers declared their independence and fought and died to free us from the yoke of corporate bondage under the King of England. And now here we are fighting this battle all over again, only this time corporate powers are going to win if the people don’t wake up very soon and realize they’re being duped into willingly submitting themselves to corporate bondage. And these corporate powers spend a lot of time, energy and money on keeping us all divided with one wedge issue after another because they know that if the people were to realize what is happening and come together and unite, they’d be history.

GHW Bush said in a 1992 interview (paraphrasing): If the people knew what we have done, we’d be chased down the streets and lynched.

And BTW, the establishment of the Federal Reserve is just a further example of the undue influence of these corporate powers.

Pelosigeist is a horrible play on words. If you are aspiring to become a biting satirist, you’re going to have to do way better than that. Here is an example: Ann Coulter = Ann Coultergeist. See poltergiest and coultergeist kind of rhyme if you don’t use the French pronunciation that Ann prefers. I understand that Pelosigeist is more akin to painting a mental image, but this isn’t the FAUX NEWS (FAUX/FOX = classic play on words!) comment section and the majority of the readers are not going to go there.

You might want to refrain from using the word tampon too. Just sayin’.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I know. I’m surprised your comment didn’t get deleted for the mere mention of that abominable word. Mine, too, for that matter.

Anyway, not sure why you decided to try and cum all over my parade here. You failed, by the way. You are hardly snarky enough to be of any interest.

    Better luck next time!

Your absolutely right on all fronts. I understand that we have a sort of split one party system, and it isn’t fair. These corporations/politicians create a sense of false choice, because as long as we think we have a choice we won’t rise up. The only reason I don’t see a problem with rallying against the Government is because it has become an enemy of freedom and of the people. When the Gov’t thinks it’s okay to send x-ray vans to look through peoples walls and clothes without warrants it is the enemy. When the Gov’t proclaims it will enforce it’s laws no matter how THE PEOPLE of California vote on the pot issue, it has become the enemy. When the CIA can kidnap and experiment on people with LSD back in the 60′s and now just torture whoever they feel like torturing it has become the enemy of the people. That’s only three of countless crimes that our government has committed against us. Every big name politician is involved in very shady evil dealings. Our biggest import to the rest of the world is weapons, and supposedly all we want is peace in the world? Going by your logic here, I might have this wrong, but you said that thinking the government is the enemy is the same as thinking the people are the enemy because this government is of by and for us correct? Well I submit that our Government has become our greatest enemy because it is the arm of action or the big corporations of the WORLD. They aren’t even U.S. corporations. The whole system makes me sick, too bad there is nowhere to escape too.

the most frustrating thing is that the driver never gets blamed. “oh if you had ridden with them there wouldnt have been a bush”. and if we continue to ride with them there will never be another grayson.
