Afghan President Karzai: Bush knew we were getting bags of cash from Iran

Afghan President Hamid Karzai admitted to CNN on Monday that he has received cash payments from Iran after a New York Times report fingered his chief of staff as carrying bags of money back from trips to Iran.

Little noticed in his interview, however, is that he said that President George W. Bush knew Afghanistan was getting cash from their western neighbor.

“Even when we were at Camp David [Maryland] with President [George W.] Bush, this is nothing hidden,” Karzai remarked.

Karzai likened the bags of cash that he received, which his staff doled out to “Afghan lawmakers, tribal elders and even Taliban commanders to secure their loyalty,” to the billions of dollars in US aid his country receives.

“The cash payments are done by various friendly countries to help the president’s office and to help dispense assistance in various ways to the employees around here, to people outside, and this is transparent and this is something that I have discussed,” Karzai said. Iran, he added, “asked for good relations in return and for lots of other things in return.”

“We are grateful to Iran for the help that they are giving and to those receiving that help under my instruction,” he said.

Iran’s ambassador to Afghanistan delivered the cash — in euros — in large plastic bags, according to a New York Times report published last night.

According to an Afghan official on the plane, Mr. Maliki handed Mr. Daudzai a large plastic bag bulging with packets of euro bills. A second Afghan official confirmed that Mr. Daudzai carried home a large bag of cash.

“This is the Iranian money,” said an Afghan official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Many of us noticed this.”

The bag of money is part of a secret, steady stream of Iranian cash intended to buy the loyalty of Mr. Daudzai and promote Iran’s interests in the presidential palace, according to Afghan and Western officials here. Iran uses its influence to help drive a wedge between the Afghans and their American and NATO benefactors, they say.

The payments, which officials say total millions of dollars, form an off-the-books fund that Mr. Daudzai and Mr. Karzai have used to pay Afghan lawmakers, tribal elders and even Taliban commanders to secure their loyalty, the officials said.

That is the way crime bosses do biz in order to control the oil, oil pipelines, gas, gas pipelines, and other vast resources in Afghanistan. Meanwhile the news coverage is a coverup of these realities, creating a new meaning for “news coverage”.

To Americans, the Muslims are not your enemy. USE YOUR FRIGGIN HEADS PPL! You are being used by these industrial complexes and are little more than pawns for the elite. Also remember when you buy people off, you dont ‘buy them off’ their loyalty is always up for sale…..to bad indoctrinated working class suckers in the military forces pay the ultimate price

Iran was part of that thing W called the Axis of what . . . yeah, so it makes perfect sense he’d tolerate this, especially in the nation where 9/11 was spawned. God i’m glad he was able to keep us safe – a billion here, a billion there and everything is good (except at home, of course).

I should be numb to this by now, we all should (since nothing will be done about it), but W was such a tool (of what, we’ll never really know) and the Americans who ‘miss’ him are such fools.

as years go by and we find out more and more about George Bush and his wars we will understand that the only real failing of Pres. Obama was not putting Bush behind bars. It is now documented the Bush wanted to attack Afghanistan, but Cheney and Rumsfeld had other ideas. They pushed Bush into Iraq, this country into financial ruin and our reputation around the world into the toilet

I agree, Shiva. But do you remember when, as one of her first pronouncements as House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi declared that prosecution of Bush et al was “off the table”?

That was when it flashed on me, as it must have on millions of Americans, that Obama’s incipient presidency was already compromised – the back-room deals made, the secret pacts and secret handshakes that allowed Mr Obama to take the White House – that the Obamites would be forced, for the prize of the Presidency, to put up and shut up.

We may discover as many injustices as we have the capacity for outrage and protest against, but we will never see the accountability that is demanded of a functioning capitaliistic demacracy.

you know what it seems to be a fashion these days governments prefer pony up to their allies to attain more power rather than spending on their own people’s welfare, maybe if in first place they had enough popularity among their own people there was no more room left to buy credit from outsiders

And don’t you think for 1 minute that all those establishment hacks both on the right and the left did not know this was all going on.
The Majority of the US Government from both parties share some complicity in all this Treasonous Activity.
Unless we clean house, this BS will never cease.

Kickbacks from the opium-heroin trade. Iran provides routes to Turkey, and has for many decades. Naturally the euros flow south from dealers in…European countries!

Bush knew, so does Obama – but both support(ed) federal prosecutions in California for cannabis cultivation, distribution, and possession – medical necessity or Prop 19 notwithstanding.

Henry Kissinger called it Real-Politics. Previously it was called Duplicity.

    That makes perfect sense.

From a UK news article in Feb 2007: “How the US sent $12bn in cash to Iraq. And watched it vanish.Special flights brought in tonnes of banknotes which disappeared into the war zone.
The US flew nearly $12bn in shrink-wrapped $100 bills into Iraq, then distributed the cash with no proper control over who was receiving it and how it was being spent.”

The article has a photo of a contractor guard with arm resting on a pallet stacked man high with hundred dollar bills. Americans have known that tens and hundreds of billions have been squandered in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we have known for years. Most of the money goes into the pockets of American companies running contracts. The owners of those companies are politically connected to U.S.. politicians in both parties – Don’t forget that Bill Clinton gave Dick Cheney his first Defense Contract jobs after Cheney became CEO of Haliburton. This is money transferred from the tax payers to the politically connected rich of American. After that bank busting transfer, they needed more so they took the equity out of your homes and the equity out of your 401K. Both parties have taken your and your children’s jobs and sent it to China or imported cheap labor to take them here. And today, the Republicans are promising to work with Obama on MORE “free trade” agreements.

I found your entry interesting do I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog :)…

Did anyone check Karzia’s bags when he left Camp David???

no doubt there was Haliburton & Xe money in there…

I have quit being surprised by the illegal exploits of the Bush gang but I have yet to stop being disappointed by the current regime’s response! In fact, even after I have resigned myself to the reality the we elected Bushbama, I will never get over what he has done to this country after what Bush did to it. We have surpassed Nixon’s truth that “When the president does it, it’s not illegal” and reached the point of “When the president wants it, it’s not illegal – for anyone involved”

Chalk this up to just another thing hidden from everyone by the most corrupt and criminal Republican administration in America history, representing the most corrupt, criminal and evil political party, the Republican Party, in the history of America.
