Ark. school board member accused of writing he’d wear purple only if gays ‘commit suicide’

A member of a northern Arkansas school board, commenting on campaign to get people to wear purple to show support for bullied gay and lesbian youth, purportedly posted on Facebook that the only way he would wear purple is “if they all commit suicide.”

The Arkansas Department of Education on Wednesday condemned the alleged posting by Midland School Board member Clint McCance.

The Advocate, a magazine that reports about gay issues, first reported about the posting on its website. The Facebook page has been disabled, but The Advocate posted a screen grab of the purported postings that it says someone forwarded to it.

McCance’s alleged posting was in response to a Facebook campaign that asked supporters to wear purple last Wednesday to show solidarity after several gay and lesbian youths killed themselves, reportedly because of bullying.

“Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves,” McCance allegedly wrote. “The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin.”

McCance didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment Wednesday left on his voicemail. But he told the Arkansas Times that the issue had been “blown out of proportion” and he planned to issue a statement later Wednesday. Officials at the Midland School District said Superintendent Dean Stanley was out of the office and not available for comment.

The Human Rights Campaign, which seeks equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, has called for McCance’s resignation. A Facebook group, “Fire Clint McCance,” had more than 15,000 members by midday Wednesday.

The state Education Department said in a statement Wednesday that it had no jurisdiction over elected school officials but that it would investigate any reports of bullying that arise because of the incident.

“The Arkansas Department of Education strongly condemns remarks or attitudes of this kind and is dismayed to see that a school board official would post something of this insensitive nature on a public forum like Facebook,” the department said.

He’s on an Arkansas school board? Well, the south is hardly known as a hotbed of intellectualism.

you condemn yourself mr. clean hands.

I think the School Board’s disavowal is missing the point: someone with this man’s ideological disposition shouldn’t be a public official.

  • Anonymous

yep, the good christians burned ‘witches’ at the stake for more than a thousand years by the millions in spanish and other inquisitions and just for kicks… and the preferred way to do that was with at least 2 gay men at her feet like kindling, hence the term ‘faggots.’ that is, unless they could afford the ‘indulgence’ to the church to buy heir way out of the burning… there is some irony in the fact that the gay pedophiles of the church have brought it low…

I live in Arkansas, this guy does not represent the majority of the Good People who live here,as an uncle of a gay man I can assure you of that.He is a diluted freak and if more people like him would do the rest of the world a favor and kill themselves maybe he would accomplish some good on this earth.

Hahaaaa! that guys name is…Clint McCance? That’s almost as good as Harsh Whitman.
In any case, he’s republican then he’s GAY. Only gay dudes allowed in the Gay Old Party. Well more specifically, self loathing, projecting, hating, closet gay dudes.
Evenings at that republican/religio ‘Family’ place must be a riot. I can sort of picture it, a human string of fellatio.

Hey, McCance, if you commit suicide I promise I won’t cry!

I knew before I started reading this thread that some IDIOT would have to make a wise crack about Arkansas or the south, and you didn’t let me down. Based on your broad brushed generalizations, I seriously doubt that you have the credentials to be casting aspersions on the intellectualism of others.

This is AK. These people are just one step from the trees. If anyone is waiting for a comment from the school’s administration, they will wait forever. I know something about that state. My best friends husband moved there and married a 14 year old girl. He was in his late 30′s. I suspect there are people there with web feet. Inbreeding is bad you know.

Education is bad there. The state has an appalling lack of knowledge. It is part of the bible belt. And there are no shortage of backward attitudes toward religion, sex and cogent thought. And like most of the bible belt there are grim statistics. The worst of the numbers for unwed mothers is higher in those states then in the rest. And TX has the worst. Old time religion. Suicide for god. Christianity at it’s best.

zzzzz … as a democrat and liberal I am so damn disappointed that we have to put shit and crap like this on one of our leading left leaning sites … I know we are going to lose the house and it really doesn’t matter what the totals are in the Senate, 52, 51, 58, 60, we can’t get crap passed anyway … I would much rather stay a true democrat and stay on issues than to fling a crap story like this around. I enjoy my integrity too much to care about 4th degree crap so far down the food chain that it doesn’t matter.

I grew up in Arkansas. This is a tiny town and not representative of the general population. My hometown is 60 miles away or so and has a thriving LGBT community. Not all Arkansans and not all Southerners are small minded bigots.

  • Anonymous

Why not a purple tie for your kangaroo court?

  • Anonymous

First of all, AK stands for Alaska. AR is the abbreviation for Arkansas.

I was born and reared in Arkansas, as were my three sisters. My father held a Ph.D. and was a professor; my mother is a teacher with a masters degree. My sisters all have masters degrees and I hold a Ph.D. and am a professor like my father. All of us were the products of Arkansas public schools and went on to some of the best institutes of higher learning in this country and in Europe. We also have plenty of age-mates who have comparable educational experiences to our own.

Kind of blows your theories out of the water, doesn’t it?

There are intelligent people and unintelligent people everywhere. Regionalism is about as attractive a trait as racism.

It’s one thing to be filled with hate for gay teenagers or just kids suspected by their creepy peers of being gay, but it’s another thing altogether to be unable to express that hatred in a grammatically correct way. Poor spelling, bad punctuation – FAIL. This guy is a moron.

Alaska is AK. Arkansas is AR. Yes, there’s a startling lack of genetic diversity in this state. I embraced atheism about 2 years ago after really trying to assimilate into this tiny backwater in south central Arkansas. The preacher at the church we attended kept rambling on about “men craving strange flesh”. My daughter was 7 at the time & thankfully never asked me what he meant. This was around the time when the gay adoption ban was on the ballot. I’m still shocked the angry villagers here didn’t run me out of town with pitchforks & blazing torches for being an Obama voter.
Anytime people abandon their own free will & capitulate to a deity that doesn’t exist & churches that want 10% of your money, you get backwoods attitudes like Sharron Angle professes. There’s no logical way to justify forcing a girl to bear the child of her rapist. Which could also be from a family member, especially if we’re still talking about Arkansas. But back to the puke we were discussing. McCance sounds like so many of the righteous bible thumpers who condemn anyone who disagrees with their religious doctrine. If there was a “god”, why would he make someone endure the pain & suffering of being gay? Enduring ridicule for being who you are? The shame that others inflict on you because you don’t fit their idea of what YOUR sexuality should be. In Arkansas you can be a gay man. Only if you’re married to a “godly” woman & have a lot of money. I’ll step down from my soapbox now.

I lived in Texas for 8 years. A worse place I’ve never lived in. Full of homophobic, racist, bigoted assholes. But hey, they were ‘Christian’.

  • Anonymous

Exactly. I’m sick and tired of fools on this comments board posting about bigots hating gays and minorities, then turning around and exhibiting the exact same behavior by hating on people because of where they live. It is regionalism which is the same as racism or homophobia. You’re hating someone because of a particular characteristic whether it be their affection for the same sex, their skin color or the place they live. It’s pretty G.D. ridiculous and if you idiots can’t see that it’s the same thing, then you’re no better than the curb stomper or this school official or the Texas TV personality. So seriously, STFU about Texas and Arkansas and “the South” in general. You’re showing your ass.

  • Anonymous

So you’re saying the struggle for human and civil rights is not central to the progressive movement?

  • Anonymous

no matter how many times I see this, it still hurts my heart to hear such hate – wishing death on another especially over something that person knows nothing about… sad… there is a change coming and we are not ready…. please… show random acts of kindness all….

There are big differences in regional cultures though. I’ve lived it several parts of the country and they all have their vices and virtues. Heck, it’s different from town to town in a region, and from neighborhood to neighborhood. Yes there are exceptions everywhere and yes a lot is based on one’s own distorted perception, but that can be part of it. For instance, where I live now it was originally settled mainly by progressive Germans escaping the tyranny of Bizmarck, Germany’s Reagan. That helped with the starting the republican party when it was still progressive, and spawned the actual Progressive Party, but it also meant people brought Berlin’s “graceless unwillingness to let you know they like you” (slight misquote of William James) with them. That’s a cultural meme that propagates easily even among newcomers. If everyone acts reserved and you don’t know the secret cues that mark you as an insider, you start getting reserved yourself, until finally you’re enough like them in your distrust they start trusting you, but by then your own perceptin is so distorted you’re living in a different world. Human culture is incredibly complex, creative and reflexive, and prone to all sorts of collective errors. This applies to the South as well, where I have also lived. Cultural norms do exist and they can be toxic. If that’s my ass, so be it.

The story lately is not just that remarks like this are being made and acts of violence like the one the other day in Kentucky, but the readiness of the right an d Fox News to try to explain it away, defend it, or even justify it. There will always be miscreants. What’s dangerous is when society itself becomes miscreant, either by supporting their behavior — or by overreacting to it.

  • Scuby

Phil, I don’t question that this dipshit McCance certainly earned or deserves the right to have his “intellectulism” questioned, but to cast the population of the entire state under the same dim light is simply not correct nor fair. I am a proud (and intellectual) citizen of Arkansas, and refuse to allow those who know nothing about the state to smear it based on parroted bias. Believe it or not, Arkansas citizens wear shoes, brush our teeth, marry outside our direct family, etc. We are surgeons, lawyers, architects, engineers, educators, etc., just like in states such as New York, California, Massachussetts, etc. Those who have never been to Arkansas or met its fine people should not be making broad generalizations about it as Jupiter8 did. I would invite anyone who stereotypes this state as a hayseed redneck hillbilly state to come visit the state and learn the truth. That said, of course we have idiots here, just like every state in the union does. My girlfriend, whom is a retired elementary school teacher and advocate for GLBT issues within the public school system, drove up McCance’s school this morning with a large group of people to protest his comments and demand his resignation. They are carrying signs which state the names of the young gay men who committed suicide in support of this cause.

  • Anonymous

Nope, not saying that at all, just saying that some stories are so much bullshit and so obviously crap that everyone except just a few people would agree with … it’s like doing a story that the sun came up this morning. There will always be idiots like this, no one will ever change that, let’s move on and tackle the bigger issues.
