Bad news for Democrats as poll shows 61% say US on the ‘wrong track’

Five days from US elections, President Barack Obama’s Democratic allies got more bad news Thursday in a new poll that found his winning 2008 coalition had fractured amid deep anger at the economy.

As each side unleashed a barrage of brutal last-minute television ads, Democrats enlisted former president Bill Clinton to make the difference in some nail-biter contests while Republicans used Obama’s own words against him.

And with the 2012 White House race set to start in earnest shortly after the election, Republican former vice presidential hopeful SarahPalin said in a television interview that she would run “if there’s nobody else to do it.”

Palin, who has criss-crossed the United States stumping for Republican candidates, told the Hollywood-focused Entertainment Tonight program she would take “a real close look at the lay of the land” before deciding.

Fired-up Republicans were widely expected to net more than the 39 seats they needed to take over the House of Representatives but fall short of the 10 seats they needed to recapture the Senate.

A new survey by The New York Times and CBS television found that, by a broad 61-34 margin, respondents believed that the country was on the “wrong track” as it struggled to emerge from the worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

The survey, which had an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points, found that Republicans had wiped out the Democratic edge with women, Roman Catholics, less affluent Americans and independents, key to Obama’s victory in 2008 and the Democratic capture of Congress in 2006.

While Democrats have beaten Republicans among women voters since 1982, Republicans held a four-percentage-point advantage in the final campaign sprint, and a 47-32 percent edge with independents who often sway US elections.

The poll found nearly two in three respondents willing to back political newcomers on November 2, and 28 percent more ready this year to back someone with views that “seem extreme.”

Obama planned an 11th-hour coast-to-coast campaign blitz through key battlegrounds, while Clinton lent his political star-power to Democrats in tight races, notably looking to pump up the party’s get-out-the-vote efforts.

The former president was to attend three rallies with Democratic Representative Joe Sestak, who was locked in a bitter too-close-to-call Senate battle with Republican Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania.

In Nevada, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blistered Republican rival Sharron Angle with a television advertisement accusing her of leaving children at the mercy of sex offenders, dooming cancer patients to the grave, and shipping US jobs to China.

The commercial, which features shots of an empty playground swing and pallbearers carrying a coffin through a cemetery, also charges that Angle favored prison inmates receiving “massages in a radical Scientology program” — a reference to a proposed treatment plan for women drug addicts behind bars.

Reid, the Republicans’ highest-profile target, was locked in the fight of his political life against Angle, a “Tea Party” darling who has raised millions of dollars to unseat him.

Angle spokesman Jerry Stacy shot back that Reid “is a failed politician who is unable to run on his disastrous record, so he had to deploy a multi-million dollar campaign trying to distort who Sharron is.

“Voters in Nevada are smarter than that, and on Tuesday voters will decide they’ve had enough of Harry Reid and his policies of destruction,” he added.

The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, released an Internet ad warning voters: “Don’t wake up on November third and realize you didn’t do enough” and using Obama’s own hopeful words about the economy against him.

The ad juxtaposes the stubbornly high US unemployment rate of nearly 10 percent and the 13.6-trillion-dollar national debt with the president’s repeated assurances that the country is going “in the right direction.”

All 435 House of Representatives seats, 37 of 100 Senate seats, and 37 governorships are up for grabs in the elections.

Historically, a sitting US president’s party loses seats in his first mid-term elections, but such contests have been poor predictors of chances for a second term.

Taking control of even one chamber of Congress would give Republicans broad control over the legislative agenda in Washington and new power to investigate the Obama administration and probe government programs.

From 2005 HBO Special, George Carlin:

You and I are not in the Big Club

(Editor’s note: WARNING- This is an R-rated excerpt from George Carlin’s lastest special, “Life is worth Losing.” It’s been airing for the past few months on HBO. The first time I saw it, and heard this segment on what I have been calling “The Circle of Greed,” about how the ultra-wealthy use Washington and Wall Street to rob America blind, about how the rich get richer and the rest of us get screwed, my first thought was “if a 69 year-old comedian understands what’s going on, why don’t those in charge get it?” And then I realized: they do get it…and that’s exactly the problem. But as Carlin says in a trailer for this special, which was taped in 2005, “you can’t shut me up, and you can’t dumb me down.” Enjoy.)

There’s a reason that education sucks, and it’s the same reason it will never ever ever be fixed. It’s never going to get any better, don’t look for it. Be happy with what you’ve got. Because the owners of this country don’t want that. I’m talking about the real owners now, the big, wealthy, business interests that control all things and make the big decisions.

    Forget the politicians, they’re irrelevant.

Politicians are put there to give you that idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations, and they’ve long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the State Houses, and the City Halls. They’ve got the judges in their back pockets. And they own all the big media companies so they control just about all the news and information you get to hear.

They’ve got you by the balls.

They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want; they want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want—they don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interest. You know something, they don’t want people that are smart enough to sit around their kitchen table and figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago.

They don’t want that, you know what they want?

They want obedient workers, obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it.

And now they’re coming for your social security money.

They want your fucking retirement money; they want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later because they own this fucking place. It’s a big club and you ain’t in it! You and I are not in the Big Club. By the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you in the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to believe, what to think and what to buy.

The table is tilted folks, the game is rigged.

Nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care. Good honest hard working people, white collar, blue collar, it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard working people continue, these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cocksuckers who don’t give a fuck about them. They don’t give a fuck about you. They don’t give a fuck about…give a fuck about you! They don’t care about you at all, at all, at all.

And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.

That’s what the owners count on, the fact that Americans are and will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white, and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes everyday. Because the owners of this country know the truth, it’s called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.

Stunning bad news for Democrats! Please…four days before the election, this is hardly worth reporting on. Polls still say people have a more favorable view of Democrats than the GOP, even though the generic ballot favors the GOP. This just means a lot of people plan on staying home. Get one or two people you know to vote, and the landslide GOP gains will be much smaller. But I don’t want a Speaker Boehner or a Majority Leader McConnell. Keep criticizing and keep being angry and keep believing we’re on the wrong track…but vote. I want to punish the Democrats for being spineless corporatists and for overall suckitude, but not voting doesn’t help.

who ever believes in polls should continue their beliefs in Santa Clause, The Easter Bunny, and the Second Coming of whoever. Polls are all manipulated and geared, created to get a given result. If you think the results are arbitrary and independent, re-read the first sentence I wrote.

I hear comments from our politicians like ” the American people are smart and they wouldn’t think so and so or do so and so…” They are wrong. The American people are STUPID! And one party knows it and exploits it. The Republican Party knows that people have short memories and that if they come at something with enough zeal and hammer it every day…all day and all night, the country will say “well, I guess there must be something to whatever it is that’s got them upset.”

    Rinse and repeat.

The title of the article is this:

Bad news for Democrats as poll shows 61% say US on the ‘wrong track’

But then the article itself doesn’t go into any detail as to what is the “wrong track” and what is the track this nation thinks we should go on.

Don’t tell me the nation wants to go back to the failed Repubican track that got us into this mess, which is the tax cut for the wealthy only and screw the rest of America track.

The article then says: The poll found nearly two in three respondents willing to back political newcomers…

This has been a mainstream media talking point that has been blown apart. Even when there were only 7 primaries left the media kept this talking point up. The Facts: almost 300 plus incumbent were picked in the primaries only 7 newcomers out of all the primaries made it. This fact goes against the 2 out of 3 for newcomers claim. What is with this mainstream media hype on the public?

The article mainly favorable to Republicans winds down to this:

The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, released an Internet ad warning voters: …The ad juxtaposes the stubbornly high US unemployment rate of nearly 10 percent and the 13.6-trillion-dollar national debt…

But then is stops without adding a rebuttal such as the Republicans if elected will add 4 trillion to the deficit with no way to pay for it. This deficit is tax cut for the wealthy only, that Repubicans have no job creation plan period. That Republicans plan to add 5 trillion deficit if they get their way in destroying Social Security by putting all the money into the hands of Greedy Wall St and once done the money will go poof on the people.

What direction is the right direction? The direction of the Republicans is the nation for the small 1 per cent only, by the 1 per cent only and the rest of American can just go and die. You get what you deserve if you vote Republican.

And this article is vague and in vague in favor of the Republican Party that failed and will continue to fail.

  • Wombat Weatheraxe

Why is this bad news for Democrats? Polls have shown for many months that people believe we are on the wrong track and yet the GOP has blocked and thwarted all attempts at decent legislation. Are the people so stupid that they don’t know who has caused this mess? I think not. Yes, we are in trouble, but the solution is NOT to elect a GOP majority and I believe enough sane people will know that. I say again, polls show nothing other than what the people who write them decide they will show BEFORE they conduct them. Let’s wait until Tuesday and LET THE PEOPLE VOTE!

OK Dems, listen up cause I’ve sat here for 40 years and watched you keep screwing this up. Here is the deal. When you get control of the government you look across the isle, say fuck you, then begin smashing everything that hasn’t been thrown in jail. Take reconsiliation and shove it up Boner’s ass so far he’s licking the tip clean of brown, and stick everything you don’t want to handle on the supreme courts docket.

Because while I have seen the odd republican cross the isle when the climate permits. When they say before you even get into office, “fuck them and everything they do no no no.” next time you know they mean it, just like they did every other time.

They are babies. They hold their breath until you go OK stop. You always go OK stop and they always win.

Let’s try your fav car thing. The car is racing down the hill straight for you, the drive’s plan is to run you down like a dog, slam on the brakes then run over you again and again until even your mom can’t pick you our of the meat pile.

You have two options. You dive out of the way, get up and run like hell, hoping to find a cop that’s not the drives brother (have you figured out this is a horror movie yet? They will never stop and there is no where to hide).

Or, you wait till the car gets real close and you shot the drive between the eyes. When the car rolls to a stop you open the door and shoot him again and again until he’s dead and you have no more bullets.

This isn’t Sesame Street, this is the real world and it’s history is full of brutality and evil.

Unless and until you all find a Gandhi, those are the only two viable options, because these people will walk up behind a pacifist and slit his throat for kicks, then take his wallet as an after thought.

  • Winski

So what are they recommending for a ‘right’ path?? Oh, that’s right they HAVE NO DETAILS of what ‘right path” should be… MORE so, the above article/poll DOES NOT ASK for alternative “right way”s that the country should be taking. That’s TOO hard for the polling folks…

THIS POLL IS A SHAME.. ABSOLUTELY USELESS… and, TELLS NOTHING.

  • Anonymous

Did the question ask WHY the people thought it was on the wrong track? If not, are you just assuming because most think it is that’s bad for the Democrats, the party supposedly in power? That’s a pretty big leap.

I think we’re on the wrong track . . . but I think it’s because of the GO-P-TEA crowd and Democrats too scared to do what they know is right. I voted and it wasn’t for GO-P-TEA.

This country has been on the wrong track since 1980… Democrats & Republicans were in charge… It’s not “bad news for Dems”, it’s bad news for the American people that we are unable to elect representatives that are not in it for themselves.

We have, maybe, one more chance to save this country – 2012. I am not sure how we have to do it but we must find a way to get the money out of politics. We, and I mean both sides of the aisle, Must take the government back from the corporations.

It may be that we get into local parties and start setting rules there. move those rules from the party to local races, then to state and final to national races.

It may be that we need to spend the next two years pulling the wedge out of politics with a grassroots campaign that focuses on what the true grass roots have in common… We all want more responsibility, more transparency, more effectiveness, more jobs and to get America back to the great country it once was… Once we all realize this it will just be the HOW that gets in the way – we are at a point that the media and the multinational corps have convinced most of us that if you aren’t with me, you hate America and that is not true…

FDR said it – “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” and to prove that, the corporatists are running campaigns of fear.

While we fight over the “Board of Education”, how to fix our immigration policy and if we want the government to manage our health care plan or our boss we have lost control of the process of American Democracy. If we can’t get the hate out of American politics, even just a bit, by 2012 we will no longer be what the founding fathers envisioned but we will be what they ran from… A Corporate funded Oligarchy. Our votes will mean as much as votes meant in Soviet Russia…

I hope we can fix this country because I don’t know what system of government will follow and I’d kinda like to live out my years here…

  • http://twitter.com/OMGWhatDidWeDo Trevinla

The politicians make those statements while defunding and deregulating the education system to ensure the American people do not learn how to research or how to do any analytic reasoning, therefore ensuring American people are never “smart and they wouldn’t think so and so or do so and so…”

  • http://twitter.com/OMGWhatDidWeDo Trevinla

just like the health care surveys – of the people who do not like the new health care policies, more than half think they did not go far enough but all the polls say is that a large number of people don’t like the policy…

  • http://smugmug.com/other/anoceanapart Maheanuu

The only thing I can say is if the “Public” thinks we’re on the wrong track with Obama, just wait until they put the Repigliklanns in (if the poll is accurate). With the media today I don’t think that their results should be used to wrap fish in, but that again is only my opinion.

If the results are accurate and the Repigs control the law making side of the government once more then the future “Train Wreck on the New Track” should be nothing short of spectacular. I am not very concerned any longer as my age and the fact that I no longer live in the United States pretty well immunize me and my family from almost all misfortunes that you face in the future. Other than the fact that I have family and friends who live there who stand a very good chance of suffering through this period of bad times brought on by believing in a “BAD” political party, and poorer education.

I will feel sorry for those who fought and lost, as I am still a part of you. But for the members of my family who have, over the years continued to drink the kool-aide and demean and bad mouth anything and everything liberal, the only thing I have to say is… “Enjoy the fruits of your labors as the world has seen the enemy and, It Is You!”.

  • http://twitter.com/OMGWhatDidWeDo Trevinla

are you suggesting that the government did something good in Germany by creating a system where employers didn’t have to lay people off during rough times but rather the paychecks were supplemented by a under-employment type plan???

that would be crazy – how are companies supposed to hire people back at lower wages if they don’t lay them off… (written in “sarcasm” font)

Have most Americans forgotten that the GOP put us on the wrong track and that they want to keep us there?

Because of tax “loop holes”, wealthy Americans and Corporations pay very little to no taxes at all. That means that everyday, average Americans shoulder and carry the tax burden within our society. Is this fair? In reality, Loop holes are just another way for the wealthy to lie and cheat and get around the law. Should loopholes be legal in America? And, what does that teach us about shouldering our fair share and being responsible or not responsible? And why have we put up with this lying and cheating for so long? What are we going to do about it?

The Republican Party, pretends that they want to lower taxes for the American people but they know full well that the loopholes they created means that Corporations and wealthy Americans will escape from paying their fair share and that every-day Average Americans will Shoulder the tax burden. Is this fair?

The Republicans pretend they want jobs here in America. But because of loop holes thousands of jobs have moved to China and India. Why do they support these loopholes so that companies invest in China and India and not here in the United States? Again, is this fair? And, is this cheating? I know it cheats the American people. Everyone knows that to create jobs, you have to invest in America. America’s infrastructure, schools, technology, high-speed rails, cities and towns. You cannot continue to cut and cut, and not put anything back, after awhile you will have nothing left at all but desolation and decay.

One current example of a destroyer is the Republican Governor of New Jersey, currently proud of cutting the budget (education and services) but he will not Fund the tunnel which would have created thousands of jobs for his state. To put something back, just not desolate the state.

The Pretenders, “mission” is to sell to the American people the “bill of goods” that we Need less government, after all, government will only get in the way of their fraudulent schemes and try to hold them accountable to people and not to corporations! Less Government, means No Regulations and no one to keep them from their dirty deeds.

They pretend they did not “bail” out Wall Street. But because of no regulations and policing, they already bailed out Wall Street! Thank God for those sensible government officials who realized that in order to save our economy the bail out was necessary or the whole economy would have collapsed, because Bush & Co. waited until the last minute, when they were ready to get out of dodge and the collapse was imminent, to tell the American people just how badly they had squandered our economy with phony and fraudulent real-estate deals and in funding the phony and unnecessary Iraq War!

If you vote Republican or if you do not vote at all on November 2nd, and in the future you still continue to carry the tax burden while the wealthy get tax breaks, again while paying no taxes, or if you find that your Social Security benefits will be tied to the stock market because of privatization,or if you find that your Unemployment Benefits are put on Freeze while your medical premiums are going up. If you continue to see that more jobs are shipped overseas, while our country decays from neglect and further delines into a third-world country, then you have no one to blame but yourself! Remember: They want to see Pres. Obama Fail, which really means we all fail!

Proves I guess that we live in a nation of dummies if they believe that the Republicans can do any better. Of course it might have helped if Obama would have done the things he promised like ended the wars, shred the Patriot Act and revived the Constitution. He rode in on the backs of people who want a more progressive stance if only to bring the country back to the center. I think it is beyond his control as I also think the country was comprised on 9-11 and that covert faction still holds the White House.

Notice the news keeps telling us about the bad economy and jobs ,,, BUT they never tell Americans just who created this disaster.
H… Bush now like most criminals has someone writing a book about his VERSION of what God told him to do and why.
Think this is not another re-writing or history , then you had better think again.
By the time Texas rewrites our school’s history test books and the rewrite of our history by our government while they have and are writing it on disk,, Americans will never know what our true history was.
The revisionism trend is popular today , where history is revised, to reflect a more accurate account, but—in most cases—it is mainly to satisfy the current social, political, economic, religious or racial biases of those who record it.

Yes, I believe the USA is on the wrong track. Funny how the media comes to the conclusion that’s its because of the Democrats. If asked, I’d tell them I believe its because of the obstuctionist tactics of the Republicans to get anything accomplished. Its like the recent healthcare reform bill. I didn’t like it because I believe it didn’t go far enough, not because I’m against healthcare reform, but the media will group me with those against healthcare reform. I don’t care to watch Wolf Blitzer, that doesn’t mean I don’t like CNN.

If the Tea Party Republicans–slash–Strict Constitutionalists are victorious in this ballgame, those who believe the country is on the wrong track can sit back, and relax as the commuter train speeds the towards the Right Solution Station. Bury your heads in newspaper stories. Feverishly read about your media manufactured anger and frustration. Stand in the aisle and vent if you must. Discuss what the fake poll numbers mean.

You should smile when you read that politicians, lobbyists and the Chamber of Commerce is selling America to the highest bidders. Whatever happens you will be exempt, because you are aboard the right commuter train.

Suddenly there is Banging! Crashing! Screaming! The train that Republicans promised to get on the right track veered, hitting another oncoming train head-on. Survivors are rubbing their heads, wondering what happened. How can experienced engineers make the mistake of putting two speeding trains on the same track, they wonder.

A better questions is how do you stop the pending train wreck that’s heading towards Washington? At the wheel of the Obstruction & Repeal & Impeach commuter will be none other than McConnell and Boehner. Both drivers have vowed to quickly derail the Obama Agenda Express. “That’s what the American people want,” the drivers say. Pre-election chatter predicts there will be heavy collateral damage on the Democratic side.

Legislators of both parties are bought and paid for by big business. Goldman Sucks and Beepee were Obama’s 2 top contributors. What we really need in the US are a couple of additional parties (which will never happen; the dems & gop will never let it happen), or totally public financing of cam-pains.
Obama appointed exactly the wrong people to head his financial team. Summers and Geithner are not the people’s friends.
Obama has basically pissed on his base as is evidenced by the “stop whining” comments from Biden, et al. I won’t vote for republicnots but I might vote for an independent instead of a dem.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gregory-Martin/100000564476826 Gregory Martin

Most of this discontent, IMHO, is not because Obama has gone too far, but that he hasn’t gone far enough. Virtually everyone who voted for him expected that he’d rapidly pull our military out of two wars, condemn torture, close Gitmo, prosecute Bush war crimes and so on, and instead, he wasted his first two years attempting to compromise with people who refuse to compromise (because they are fucking insane!), tried hard to make nice with the GOP with little gestures (like not handing Cheney over to the Hague), throwing the ‘center’ way to the Right. If he’d have taken bolder steps, 80% of the country would’ve had his back and shouted down the wingers. Instead, we get bullshit headlines like this, right before the midterms.

This nation is on the wrong track because its white majority REFUSES to put the Wealthiest White Male 1%ERS among them in PRISON for MULTIPLE FELONS. Seemingly, they’d much rather let these 10,000 or so Wealthy White Men send American men and women off to die fighting unwinnable undeclared wars whose sole purpose is to STEAL/PILLAGE/LOOT the Resources (Gas, Oil, Water & Minerals) Wealth of Non-White nations ALL OVER THE WORLD.

These Wealthy OLD White Male 1%ERS have BOUGHT the Congress (> 3/4 of the Senate & 2/3 of the House are MULTI-MILLIONAIRES as a DIRECT RESULT OF BEING BOUGHT
STOOGS). They have the Courts, Banks, Media, Stupid White People & Congress in their POCKETS. They’ve BOUGHT elections to get the Laws they want and Policies they need to ensure their perpetual Wealth, Power & Control.

They have NO Morality, Ethics, Patriotism or Honor yet they demand such in those they RULE & ROB. They’ve Looted the US Treasury for the last 30yrs., Robbed Taxpayers of over $20 TRILLION in the last 5 to10. They’ve used Illegal Wars and GENOCIDE to eliminate over 10 MILLION people in over 80 Non-White Nations around the World to STEAL & PILLAGE their Oil, Gas, Water & Minerals without opposition. In their unbridled pursuit of WEALTH & POWER, they even MURDERED some 3,000 of their fellow citizens on American soil not 10yrs. ago as Americans ‘popped another Cool one’ and sat on their butts watching Dancing with the Stars!

Yes, the nation is on the wrong track because its citizens are too Cowardly to fight for their ALMOST DEAD Democracy and too SUPID & GREEDY to put the 1%ERS IN PRISON for destroying this one great nation! SHAME ON THE 315 MILLION who live here in SILENCE…

I would like to know what the 61% perceive as the “right track”. Did they expect manna to fall from the sky the moment Obama got elected? Did they expect the Repugs in the Senate to agree on all of the stimulus programs? Did they expect that Obama and the Democrats were going to bring about prosperity in two years?

I guess they want someone to make them feel good about themselves like ole Ronnie Raygun. Then they could go on worshiping that “golden calf” called tax cuts for the rich, and reduced regulation on safety and environmental impact. That might not bring back jobs, but then they will just start believing that garbage about the unemployed being “lazy”.

Do they want to know where their jobs went? Tell them to try India, China, and South Korea. They aren’t coming back under the Repug watch until we eliminate the minimum wage and agree to be treated like serfs in a right wing oligarchy.

Go ahead friends, continue to read your People magazines and dreaming that one of your kids might win American Idol.

  • http://twitter.com/shivabeach Shiva

61% is not a good number. Is certainly better than the 72% that during the Bush administration thought we were in the wrong direction. The problem is we never swerve from the direction we are in
two political parties who refuse to work together is not a recipe for being in the right direction. Refusing people’s rights and wanting war doesn’t help

  • Anonymous

I think the number is indicative of the way things are … we can’t expect it to be any better, but the question is whose fault is it? Well it doesn’t matter, only the people in office can change things … when you have 1/2 of the Congress not helping at all, and probably all of Congress when the GOP takes over the House … things are going to get worse especially if we have assholes in office who are going to fight to repeal everything that was completed the last 2 years.

  • DesertSun59

That 61% is going to be in for a wake up call when we return to Bush-era de-regulation, totally unfettered capitalism and the repeal of health care insurance reform.

Good luck finding another country that might hire you, too.

I don’t believe these polls are accurate. Last night on the 10 pm local news I heard a poll that said our Dem candidate for Governor was up by 12 points. Today, not a full 24 hrs The 12pm news say the republican and Democratic candidate are neck and neck and leaning republican. What crap. We have had 20 years of bad republicans and they have hurt are state immensely. I can’t believe every person out of work and losing their house will vote the very party that almost destroyed our country, back in!

61% say US on the ‘wrong track’

On the wrong track from what? Recovering from an 8-year Republican crime spree.

Obviously, the only solution to a Democratic-led recovery slowed by a historic record number of Republican filibusters is to put Republicans back in power, thus resuming the original crime spree.

    Good thinking, American voters!

Well it maybe true that 61% of the population thinks our country is heading in the wrong direction. However, I disagree this is bad news for Democrats. This poll is a clear indicator that the majority are having a hard time in making ends meet. Primarily, finding good paying jobs in America plays a major factor in the collective responses to the poling question.. My interpretation of this poll is that the majority of Americans are fed up with the party of NO! Yes, they are sick and tired of the negativity that is taking place in Washington. People are simply frustrated with the indecisiveness among the RepubliCANTs. The RepubliCANTs are not interested in moving this country forward. Their only interest is to allow the corporations to run our country and we all know what that means. The RepubiCANT mantra is NO regulation, NO minimum wages, NO safety standards, NO social security, NO medicare or medicaid, NO Veterans benefits, NO Dept of Education, NO environmental protections, NO government student loans for higher education, NO, NO, NO, NO is what the RepubliCANTs and Tea Partiers say towards EVERYTHING! This fact alone is the reason for the 61% of people responding to the question of whether the US is on the right track!

What would be great is if liberals woke up and supported people that were actually like them, and gave Obama a progressive majority to work with – a coalition of Greens, Independents, and Democrats. That would be “extreme” leadership alright. It would probably get things done.

A coalition-brokered Congress is not impossible in American politics but it is highly improbable and possibly rarer than a unicorn. Obama doesn’t know what’s good for him anymore. He will become more conservative, not less, just as happened to Clinton.

There is ample evidence to suggest that Bush stole both those elections anyway, the first was sloppy, but easily pinned on people who voted for real reform (Nader) in Florida. The second was blamed on electronic voting machines in Ohio.

Watching the American political kabuki play out of late is like watching a crack addict trying to get clean in a crack dealers house, with the dealer willing to trade more crack for anal sex…

The tea party is now just another kochtopus warmongering operation.. As soon as they abandoned the slash defense spending options, it became all too clear that the military industrial complex had hijacked the show… Whenever the koch brothers show up at a libertarian gig, you know that the defense crowd is about to bum-rush the stage..

This is all too predictable: The repukes take back control.. And the Wednesday after the election the sun still rises, and the markets even get a bit of a bounce… Up I say by 200 to 300 points.. Quietly in the background, gold and silver also rise mysteriously, gold by about 20 to 30 bucks, silver by about 80 cents to just over a buck… Then B-52 ben unleashes QE 2…
The USD index drops below 73… Gold experiences day after day of record gains, silver performs even better.. The DJIA experiences massive gains as well.. BUT, it is not as it seems, the rise is merely the death spasms of the dollar… Sometime after black friday but before Dec. 20, the hammer falls.. There will NOT be the usual retail hiring boost as usual, what little boost there will be will be more than devoured by the massively spiking unemployment that began running rampant after the QE 2 WMD drop. Things will still look mostly normal on the streets, all the way up until the Xmas sales reports….

The administration will blame the power shift, the repukes will blame the administration… The people will not care.. It’s hard to pay attention to the pundit bickering when your electricity is cut and you can’t sleep due to the hunger pains and the cold, hungry cries of your starving children.. By summer, supply disruptions, first in fuels, then food.. Large empty spaces with apology notes from the store managers will become larger and more frequent on the store shelves.. Also, the cost will skyrocket for what is available. The extreme drop in available taxes will have the first and most visible impact on municipalities, as will the accelerated implosion of the muni bond market… Visible in the loss of police, fire and other services.. You will effectively be told that you are for the most part on your own.. All while the public sector unions scream for their pensions, pensions that nobody has any money for. If you have children, get out of the cities now, stay with relatives, whatever, but get your kids out of the urban areas ASAP.

The wind-down of afghanistan next summer is no joke, nor the continued wind-down of operations in iraq.. Those troops will still be needed, here at home in a desperate attempt by washington and various state capitols to maintain order. The policy makers will discover something about soldiers that they tend to disregard: Those soldiers are from among us for the most part, their families and friends will be among the dissidents they will be ordered to operate against… Loyalties will be tested, impossible choices will have to be made…

After that… Well, hope you can adapt to the new reality..

    Greetings,

I will not vote in this election as I’ve come to the conclusion that withholding my vote is the only act of protest that I have left. I will not legitimize this circus by pretending to agree with it as it does not matter in any way for whom I vote.

When I tell people that I refuse to vote I get a load of crap about how I lose the right to complain or that I’m the reason bad people end up getting elected. I respond with this:

It doesn’t matter if it chess, target shooting or brain surgery, the only way to master something is to do it often. I would be terrified to think that my surgeon only worked once every two years. I might be afraid to fly if I knew that the pilot only flew an airplane once every two or more years.

Given that, what makes Americans believe that we know or understand Democracy in any way since we only practice it once every two or four years? How can we make good decisions about who to elect or what our government should do if we can only participate in it every two or four years? A quick glance at Congress is all anyone needs to see to know that we have no idea as to what we are doing.

I then tell them that I know a way to practice Democracy each and every day and that is by putting Democracy in the workplace. The workers can vote on their salary and decide their leadership, etc, etc, etc. After all, workers that make bad decisions (like voting themselves too high of a salary) would fail and workers at companies that made good decisions would advance. We could learn a lot about Democracy by putting it somewhere where we have contact with it every day. I bet the makeup of our Congress would look a lot different in a world like that.

I tell people this and they are horrified. They usually do not know what to call this evil so I’m called a Communist or a Socialist or Trade Unionist or all three. But Democracy is the rule of all by all so there really is no reason to not have it at work.

People do not want Democracy. They just want to pretend by putting a check next to a name. That is why they have political parties so you wont feel so stupid when you get into the voting booth and look down at a bunch of names and you realize you know nothing about any of them. Oh wait, there are R’s and D’s put next to the names – that sure makes it easier.

    Nope, not voting.

I pretty much agree with you denny, (actually i loved that show). I think that the dem management (oh yeah – they have management) has an alternative game plan and if these idiots on the right actually get a majority in the House – it’s going to be a high rated score on CSPAN. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if the idiots got control of the house – but it is imperative that they remain in control of the Senate. At least in the House, there is a perpetual fountain of knowlegement – Michele Bachmann! I hope she loses too but I don’t think she will based on what I’m hearing here in the Twin Cities.

Please, someone, take me away to somewhere I don’t need any money ;-)

Keep in mind that it’s sometimes good to let the other side take up all the rope only to show their real colors! We’ve been here before and I don’t like the dirty tricks that the repukes use. I just hope & pray that the constituents will see the truth. Unfortunately, I know better.

  • ladygeek

Minnesota is generally at the top as far as any election. I think we were taught before being born that there is a Democratic rule that needs to be maintained. Minnesota generally has the highest turnout of voters in the country. Oh, I’ll be there with jingle bells on my boots.

  • ladygeek

I do see your point. This country is NOT a democracy – it is a representative democracy.as intended by the Framers of the constitution. I have not given my right to vote up. Sometimes, it actually works but even the ancient Greeks had problems with democracy and they created it. The only way to change things is to participate in some manner to make a point and I understand why you’ve made your decision. I hope you will change your opinion but even in a representative democracy, you have rights.
Now as far as corruption goes (which is almost always true in any form of government), it is important to bring those issues – not to your representive or senator in congress, you can write to any senator of representative and it actually works. I just love sending emails to McConnell telling him that he should be ashamed of himself for the way he gives everything up for the bribes. Of course, I don’t get any answer but it’s still fun to do.

28% would vote for extremists? I’d say both party’s candidates are extremists. Both want to and are systematically and selectively scuttling the constitution in their respective ways for their personal ends and those of their special interest sponsors. Each has adopted ideological utopian policies (Repubs for 19th century laissez-faire economics and impotent government, Dems for a globalized borderless state that eviscerates citizenship and opportunity while preying on the very middle class that built it and exploiting the poor.) The SCOTUS is riven with partisanship (nominated and approved by the parties) and has produced a string of decisions that have made a mockery of constitutional law and democracy (the 2000 election decision, equating of corporate paper entities as persons, money as free speech, etc). Americans are even blas’e about the rule-of-law – cheering on their favorites as each take turns at selective enforcement of the laws they like and total disregard and non-enforcement of those they don’t, even though those intentional lapses take great tolls on substantial portions of citizens and pave the way for anarchy – when Americans get so pissed off that they quit voluntarily complying with any law they disagree with, just as their leaders have been doing over the past several decades. Americans have been voting for extremists all along, they just haven’t realized it – yet.

“extreme” depends on where the “center” is, and assumes a unidimensional line stretching between the two “extremities.” I don’t think politics, or life, is like that, but lazy journalists and poly sci profs lean on those terms because they don’t want to get down and dirty with real analysis.

Look, at some point in time it is going to be hard for the politicians to claim to have a mandate to do anything when only 5% of the population turns out to vote. The only way to make this terrible tyranny go away is to starve it of our support and allow it to collapse under its own weight.

I refuse to support these gangsters and war criminals and when you step into the voting booth, you are doing just that regardless of how much “fun” it is.

    It can’t collapse soon enough.

Dems wont get out to vote, either too drunk, stoned, stupid, waiting for the welfare check, dead, etc. One thing I do know is, change is a coming !!!!

your idea of a perfect world is where people get assaulted and falsely arrested for voicing their opinion or doing their job…and as far as stupid goes, you right wingers own that lock, stock and barrel…just look at all the morons you have running for office..

    The economy is bad because:

    1. America has outsourced all its manufacturing to China, Vietnam,
    Korea, Taiwan et al.
    2. Technology doesn’t create jobs, it eats human jobs like Pacman.
    3. The War Department uses trillions for nothing.
    4. Banks screw everyone and keep the money
    5. Congress wastes money on Israel, Palestine, and every other
    country
    6. Really wealthy people numbering 2% of population own 50% of
real estate, financial assets, leaving the rest of America with little
    of either
    7. 40% of every tax dollar goes to service the national debt
Relax, the situation will only get worse.

It’s amazing you right wingers aren’t embarrassed to show your face in public or even admit you ARE right wingers! Given the destruction and misery YOUR right wing republican president did to our country and the quality of candidates you are supporting in this election One would think the right wingers would hide in shame! The stupidity of the right wing candidates would be laughable if it weren’t for the fact that there is a possibility they might be elected. But of course supporters like yourself think they are great because you are just as stupid as your candidates. The fact that they think they know the constitution and obviously don’t is pathetic. The fact that the right wing buffoons who claim they have formed a “grassroots” party is laughable. The Original founder of the tea party publicly denounced the present day tea party and it’s members. They are being supported and used by rich republicans to try and keep bush’s tax cuts for the rich and deregulations for big corp. The teabaggers members have and are being duped by the likes of the john bircher koch bros. and republican racist, dick army. I doubt if any of the teabaggers even recognize these names let alone know what they are doing! The candidates like tancredo, miller, buck, o’donnell, angle and the rest of the nut bags you all think will bring back your country. Your country was hijacked by YOUR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH. He ruined our country with his failed economic policies, ruined our reputation abroad, lied us into unnecessary wars. Ruined our education system, fema , the FDA and every other program or policy. In fact I think it is very just to say if bush could touch it he ruined it. Obama walked into such an incredible mess it will be another 20 years to overcome all of bush’s destruction. In the mean time the republicans great plan is to go back to the same bush economic policies. The very definition of insanity which is [because being an insane republican your probably don't even know you are] doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome. The teabaggers have some ridiculous idea that Obama has grown the present Government larger than it should be and in fact it was GEORGE BUSH who enlarged the powers of the Federal government. It was bush that ran up the damn deficit with his drunken frat boy spending spree! I’m sure he is used to spending and having daddy run around behind him cleaning up the messes of his precious tommy tornado. Even daddy bush couldn’t clean up this mess. But put that aside and think about the teabaggers and what they believe. They want to do away with the dept of education, Social security , the healthcare, minimum wage, abortion, even in the case of pregnancy due to rape by a family member, even if the victim is a child, they will do away with federal taxes so our country’s infrastructure will deteriorate even more, do away with medicare, medicaid, food stamps, our clean water, pollution controls, our parks system. Everything will be privatized including our healthcare, drinking water, freeways etc. Each state will have their own rules regarding immigration. The chaos will be our downfall. Recently scientists have located the gene which helps decide if a person is liberal or conservative. They have already located the gene that allows empathy. Not everyone has the empathy gene and I guess that is actually proven true when you consider the narrow minded cruel tendencies of the republican candidates like Sharon angle, o’donnell, buck and the rest. The audacity spews out of them like projectile vomiting. Miller wants to cut out unemployment and medicaid yet his wife went on unemployment when she lost her job and the family went on medicaid. The hypocrisy is intolerable. The republican party is guilty of un-American activities and should be investigated by congress. The republican party hates Americans and America. They put party above country and their own personal greed above our country’s well being. The republicans are the biggest hate group in America! Congratulations rightwinga, you as a republican, teabagger or whatever you want to call yourself, are now offically the scum of the earth!

Only 61%? They must be manipulating the numbers it’s gotta be more like 85%!!!

I agree with almost all of it. Technology could create jobs. Our infrastructure needs upgrades of new technology across the board. Building a new power grid to replace our 100 year old one would create jobs. It needs to be upgraded to use renewable resources properly. Outfitting government buildings with solar panels would create jobs building and installing. Time to progress a little. On #6 don’t forget 2% owns about 82% of all stocks.

Yes, no side has produced a solution or a “right” track to get on. Their masters like it that way.

The 2 party system is BS. They just play good cop, bad cop and switch it up every couple of years. We are a bunch of fools. That’s what I don’t get about the tea party folks. They all claim to have Libertarian views. Why not vote Libertarian? A legitimate 3rd party that wasn’t co-opted would help make some things a little more honest.

Wow is site a little slanted or what-bunch of cry babies-stop blaming Bush; he had to deal with a Democrat majority in congress. I have never been employed by a poor person-leave the rich alone, so they can create more jobs. This is a great country to start a business if government leaves us alone-get off the dole and start a business-its easy. I run 3 businesses
now and will expand if the tax cuts remain in place. Lot of anger here-stop the division; Republicans are a party of inclusion-come try us out. Being successful and wealthy shouldnt be frowned upon-try it, its fun. Dont tax the heck out us and force us to go to China. Dont spend another trillion on ” shovel ready jobs” create a business friendly atmosphere and the U.S. will prosper. End the welfare-start workfare, training and put a time limit on it. There is nothing wrong with hard work and creating wealth.

While you were crying, I just closed another deal with a Chinese supplier-28 containers, just in time for the Holidays; the profit margin is incredible 82% net-gotta love it. Just cant get a decent manufacturer here. Any way, I am active in a lot of politics, when time dictates. Dont keep crying about Bush, he is a great man-needs to improve on his golf a little but fun to hang out with. This is still the greatest country on earth and opportunities abound, you just have to look for them. Having money or making money is not back-we just have to figure a way the government to keep the governments hands off it ( thank God for creative accountants ) Peace be with you my friend. Check this out this contract and let me know what you think:
    1. Senators/Representatives-Term limits 3 terms and you are done. You do not retire with benefits unless you finish 3 consecutive terms.
    2. Eliminate income tax- 20% consumption tax-by law that’s it.
    3. All congress people must abide by the same rules/laws as the “ common man” i.e. ( Obama health care, social security, etc )
    4. No President should take time off to campaign
    5. No former Senator/Representative can be a lobbyist
    6. Maximum 4 weeks vacation per year per Senator, Representative and President
    7. Judicial appointees must retire by age 75 with a 10 year term limit
    8. Salary is limited to maximum of 2 times the average salary of the average American-no voting raises for themselves.
    9. BALANCED BUDGET make Line item veto law
    10. Ability for U.S. citizens to vote directly on major bills and overturn Supreme Courts mistakes
    11. Make it illegal to switch parties after elected-they must run again in order to switch parties
    12. Give the option to invest Social Security into a Roth IRA or similar safe instrument.
    13. Deport al illegal aliens

I ‘m sorry but if you think gwb is a great man it says an awful lot about you and your judgement. Just the fact that you out source your business so you can make a greater profit without a second thought for your country tells me you care more about your bank account than you do about your fellow man and your country. To me your greed borders on treason. Your admiration for gwb tells me you like stupid rich people who lie, cheat, steal and have little regard for their fellow man…..unless they are rich drunken frat boys. Bush’s callousness and his inability to have empathy for the military he sent into an unnecessary war was never so evident as it was while joking about finding WMD’S at a fund raising dinner. He was with “his” people and they too laughed at his nauseating joke. Soldiers were being maimed and dying for bush’s war and he was laughing about it. Ya, he’s a good man. A good man who I hope rots in hell!

I do agree with a few of items, but by revealing yourself in your first few sentences I would never agree wholeheartedly with you because we have very different philosophies. Greed is ruining our world. People with money only want more money and greed clouds their thinking. They don’t care who or what they destroy as long as they get their big fat profit in the end. They have no morals, integrity or honor. They should be ashamed of themselves. But if they are like george, they don’t have the brains to even realize they should be ashamed.
