Bush claims he was a ‘dissenting voice’ on Iraq

Former President George W. Bush says he was a “dissenting voice” on the decision to invade Iraq because he “didn’t want to use force” but ran out of options.

“I was a dissenting voice. I didn’t want to use force,” Bush told NBC’s Matt Lauer in his first interview promoting his new memoir, “Decision Points.”

“I mean force is the last option for a President,” he continued, according to an NBC News transcript e-mailed to Raw Story. “And I think it’s clear in the book that I gave diplomacy every chance to work. And I will also tell you the world’s better off without somehow in power. And so are 25 million Iraqis.”

The Iraq war was sold by the Bush White House on the notion that dictator Saddam Hussein was an immediate threat to the United States, that he had weapons of mass destruction and ties to Al-Qaeda. Both were proven false.

The Bush administration invaded before the United Nations completed its weapons inspection, raising the question of whether the president really did exhaust all diplomatic options.

Bush declined to say whether he would have made a different decision if he knew all the facts.

“You just don’t have the luxury when you’re President. That’s a very hypothetical question. I will say definitely the world is better off without Saddam in power, as are 25 million people who now have a chance to live in freedom.”

The ongoing war, which began March 20, 2003, resulted in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, and inflamed anti-American sentiment in the region.

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans now consider the war a mistake, according to polls.

A variety of Bush administration officials — including his top counter-terrorism adviser and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs — said the war was based on lies.

The interview is scheduled to air Nov. 8 on NBC’s “Matt Lauer Reports.”

AH-HAAAH!!! Finally he admits that he wasn’t the decider after all. He had bosses, just like Obama has bosses. This is why we are at war. He is only there for the assignment of blame. It is the sole purpose of the office of the Presidency.

We had unprecedented control of Iraq. We were in Saddam Hussein’s palaces, for Christ’s sake. We had multiple spy planes in their air space. We had teams of helicopters swooping down on suspected sites without notice.

The crazy Chimp told the weapons inspectors to get out so he could murder Iraqi civilians without having to worry about regular white people getting in the way. Then he murdered the Iraqis. Based on nothing but lies. And now he lies some more.

Fuck you, George W. Bush. And fuck your little brother, Barack Obama Bush.

Thank you George for explaining to us that you were not in charge of the office your were (supposedly) elected to. When Cheney told you that he was going to be your Vice President did he inform you that he would be in control of the government or did he tell you he would buy you a chainsaw and a plaid shirt that you could use when he sent you off to your BS ranch in Midland to keep yourself busy and he would take care of things while you were vacationing.

George, you flatter yourself. Your voice was non-existent. Your IQ is simply low enough such that you were the perfect fool figurehead for a corrupt administration.

Whatever you may have said, it only solicited laughter from Cheney et. al. as soon as they left your presence. You were clearly the worst president in the history of America (one that looks to have only a couple years to go largely due to your presidency).

    You’re incredibly short-sighted.

He’s already starting to re-write history. Imagine what people will think 100, 200 years from now. No one who remembers the actual event will be alive. History is written by those who won. You have no idea how powerful and embedded his family already is.

    Read this: http://tinyurl.com/carlylegrp

the Bin Laden family is also the owner of one of the largest — if not the largest — contractors in the middle east.

So the US invades Iraq for it’s oil which Saddam refused to share with the world and the UN/NATO turn a blind eye to Bush’s war crimes because they want some oil too.

I read the article, and what may come as a surprise to you is that I actually remember what took place during that time. The point is Phile, he was holding the office of the Commander and Chief of the United States Armed Forces. That means that in that position HE, The President was the Decider. It is not a Corporate Board where everyone has a vote. It is the decision maker. It is his responsibility alone. The lies, not waiting for the UN Weapons Inspectors to continue the work they were doing is on him alone. And, Phille, the weapon inspectors had already gone to where the Intellegence agencies first directed them to go. Nothing, delphia, Rumsfeld in the 80s was the one who sold him the poisons that Sadam killed Kurds and Iranians with. Rummy could not believe that Sadam had actually used it all up. Sadam then turned over a shit load of “stuff” paper and digital. The initial review of that data was showing nothing, no weapons production, no “Yellow Cake” anywhere, nothing Phille. But that would not deter who? Who was then responsible for the decision to go ahead and invade. Everybody knew there was not any “weapons”. There was only Chaney and his For profit war machine. This never had anything to do with Sadam, weapons, what he did or did not do to his subjects. This wasn’t even about Oil. It is what we see, war. The Industrial Military Complex that Eisenhower warned us about,, and then had a heart attack. So, it is not about reading the three paragraph article and then giving you my thoughts on it.

The reason that the right is so easily lead by the media is that it meets the half hour attention span. You can go from knowing nothing, to knowing everything that you could possibly know in order to make the decision that, Obama is a Facist, Oliver North is a Great Patriot, or Corporations should be able to express themselves with as much money as they want during election time. 20 million in 30 second spots in a two week period will sway people into thinking what is being said is true.

So Phille, go back to the words of Eisenhower, a great Warrior President, look at what he did for the country as a Republican, follow the bouncing ball from his warning to NIxons cabinet members, to Reagan’s Cabinet, to the Corporations that those who were in those cabinets went to when not in power and then to what took place in the Bush II period, what people, what companies.

It’s bigger than one page or a half hour infomercial by Rupert and Rove. It really is. The way that this is addressed by those who we are talking about when someone puts the puzzle together for them is, Oh Yea, You’re a conspiricy theorist and everybody wanders back to the 60 second spot or the half hour infomercial with blondie girls in short skirts sittin on the couch between two men. It isn’t a conspiracy theory, it’s just business and that’s what Merica is about. Business

  • Anonymous

He may have been at some point in the past (a dissenter on invading Iraq) as his name was not on the PNAC founding signers list like Cheney and Bush’s brother Jeb and all the other neo-cons but that could have been done to protect him in his run for the upcoming Presidential race of 2000. And it could be complete hogwash. But he was gunning for Sadam from the earliest days of his administration long before 9/11 according to several insiders. So I don’t know how he squares all this unless he was converted in the first few months of his presidency. It’s hard to believe anything he says at any rate.

I thought that I had grown accustomed to his lies, but this is so bald faced I am shocked. There was scarcely anyone except Bush and Cheney who wanted the war. At one point the public was about 65% against the war with Iraq and Bush and company had to take their show on the road and sell the idea. They fired members of the Joint Chiefs and other generals who disagreed with them and ruin careers in the CIA who gave honest assessment about the imagined WMD’s, and twisted Colin Powell’s arm to make him lie before the UN. The truth is that the rest of the government and body politic was in favor of peace and common sense when it came to Iraq and that was what he was dissent against.

There seems to be a good bit of contradiction in this interview. I’ve read that at one point Matt asks Bush about squandering the surplus that existed at the end of the Clinton years. Bush, correctly points out that the surplus was never there, that the surplus was just projections based on the assumption that the dot-com boom would go on forever. So then, why the tax cuts?

It’s one thing to say, ‘I assumed the money was there, so I spent it and it didn’t turn out so well’, but what he’s saying now is ‘The money was never there, but I spent it anyway’. To me that makes it even more baffling. The cuts, given the wars, didn’t make sense then and don’t make sense now.

Oh, and he wanted Saddam the minute he stepped into office. Call it a mix of vengeance for wanting to kill his dad and also an oedipal conflict with daddy Bush as well.

General Sada was discredited when this info came out in 2006. He was the #2 man in Sadam’s airforce until 1991 when he fell out of favor with Sadam and was fired from his position. Of course he sided with the Americans when they invaded and was refered to as an American intelligence agent in the 90′s. He saved his ass by kissing US intelligence ass telling them what they wanted to hear. You think if the Neocon’s had any truely reliable intelligence about those wmd’s in Syria. They wouldn’t have hesitated to at the very least bomb the facility they were being held at in Syria as fast as they could to prove there really was wmd’s to justify the invasion of Iraq? Of course they would have. I call bullshit Mr. Shepard.

Bush was a dissenting voice? Too bad he was not in command, he could have over-ruled the others that were in favor of it. Hold on, wasn’t he the President?

many choose to continue to believe the drink/drug addict George W. Bush. GW was high when Rummy resently leaked the Republicans needed Bush to become President as they had already planned to invade Iraq long before 9/11. Like a true drunk Bush announced he was the Decider and if you weren’t with him you were against him. Powell already apologized for lying to the American people and the United Nations as he knew Iraq had no WMDs. Daddy Bush did his best to save his idiot son. Now with the proof of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity, GW needs money to lawyer up. Cheney will calm he’s to sick to stand trial and has no heart. What was funny is Bush didn’t know the Bank CEO’s admitted they never needed the TARP money but used it for Bonuses, as Bush said he would give bailout money again to Banks. We saw how Americans just voted for the Bush/Cheney policies to come back so we can expect people will rush out to buy GW’s book and then cry to Obama about how they can’t feed their kids. Look for California and New York to quickly recover from this Recession as both have smart Democrat Govenors. Few people even know how the US Government works so they believe the lies the Republicans and Tea Party said. Corporations are now looking for the candidates they paid big bucks as now it’s pay up time. Rep. Boehner well learn lying and stealing can come back and bite you in the butt. Rand Paul will now have his flock worship Aqua Buddha and get that racism started in DC. Now Randy will get all the hookers in DC to worship him and Aqua Buddha.

    Dear Mr. Bush,
You can NOT be both a cheer leader FOR and also the sole dissenting voice OF YOUR WARS!

    … unless you’re schizophrenic.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

That fact of that matter is that there WERE NOT, indeed, Weapons of Mass Destruction, that were NOT smuggled into Syria. This have NOT been verified by a(n unnamed and fictitious) former general that NEVER worked for Saddam Hussein NOR EVER EXISTED.

There, fixed all your typos. You’re welcome.
    PS-You are full of shit.

WMDS! Regime change! Spreadin’ Dumb-ocracyI Doing battle for the lord against Gog and Magog.

    ***

—Now out of office, (Jacques) Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their “common faith” (Christianity) and told him: “Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East…. The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled…. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people’s enemies before a New Age begins.”

This bizarre episode occurred while the White House was assembling its “coalition of the willing” to unleash the Iraq invasion. Chirac says he was boggled by Bush’s call and “wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs.”

After the 2003 call, the puzzled French leader didn’t comply with Bush’s request. Instead, his staff asked Thomas Romer, a theologian at the University of Lausanne, to analyze the weird appeal. Dr. Romer explained that the Old Testament book of Ezekiel contains two chapters (38 and 39) in which God rages against Gog and Magog, sinister and mysterious forces menacing Israel. Jehovah vows to smite them savagely, to “turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,” and slaughter them ruthlessly. In the New Testament, the mystical book of Revelation envisions Gog and Magog gathering nations for battle, “and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.”

    Seriously, which was it, Dumbya?

“Bush declined to say whether he would have made a different decision if he knew all the facts.”

Why do we keep repeating this lie? Everyone knows that Bush had all the facts (i.e. there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq), and invaded anyway. He claims the world is “better off” without Hussien. Are the 4,000+ dead soldiers and their grieving families better off Mr. Bush?

So that whole pesky thing back in 91-92 or thereabouts with your Dad and the quiet reply to the Iraqi’s inquiries about the Kuwait issue…and the American response that we considered it a ‘regional matter’…which then prompted them to go ahead and attack Kuwait…making themselves the perfect target for an American counterattack during the low point of the Bush 1 years…and the non-existent “incubator babies” and the sudden public complicity about military action…

…that was all a big accident then. Total coincidence. Ok…I guess that’s settled.

He’s a war criminal, and one day will be charged…

  • alfredo

For eight years he told us he was the “decider’. Now he tells us he was a dissenter. He lied us into the war, now he’s trying to lie himself out of it. I think he is totally full of #2 ( as opposed to # which is piss). What other option did he try besides “getting Saddam”? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Bush had planned to invade Iraq long before the supreme court appointed him president.
Know why Brent Sowcroft never wanted to have any thing with his administration?
After his first one on one meeting with W, Richard Armitage came out, shook his head and said: “He knows so little”.

  • alfredo

“You just don’t have the luxury when you’re President. That’s a very hypothetical question. I will say definitely the world is better off without Saddam in power, as are 25 million people who now have a chance to live in freedom.”

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.

    Bertrand Russell

“I was a dissenting voice. I didn’t want to use force,” Bush told NBC’s Matt Lauer in his first interview promoting his new memoir, “Decision Points.”

    Over a lie.
