Dems to GOP Congress members: Give up your taxpayer-funded health care

Republican lawmakers who oppose the Democrats’ health reforms should give up their taxpayer-subsidized health insurance and pay for their own coverage, say a group of progressive House Democrats.

In a letter to soon-to-be House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Democrats urged Republicans to stick to their principles opposing government-run health care and give up their own congressional health care plan.

“You cannot enroll in the very kind of coverage that you want for yourselves, and then turn around and deny it to Americans who don’t happen to be Members of Congress,” wrote Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY). “If your conference wants to deny millions of Americans affordable health care, your members should walk that walk.”

Crowley’s letter was signed by three other Democrats: Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD), Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Rep. Linda T. Sanchez (D-CA). Politico’s Glenn Thrush, who first reported on the letter, describes them as “fierce defenders of President Obama’s health care reforms.”

The Democrats say their letter is a response to freshman Rep.-elect Andy Harris of Maryland, a freshman who ran on an anti-health reform platform but on Monday reportedly complained that his health benefits would only kick in a month after he began working on the Hill. Politico reported:

Republican Andy Harris, an anesthesiologist who defeated freshman Democrat Frank Kratovil on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, reacted incredulously when informed that federal law mandated that his government-subsidized health care policy would take effect on Feb. 1 – 28 days after his Jan. 3rd swearing-in.

“He stood up and asked the two ladies who were answering questions why it had to take so long, what he would do without 28 days of health care,” said a congressional staffer who saw the exchange. The benefits session, held behind closed doors, drew about 250 freshman members, staffers and family members to the Capitol Visitors Center auditorium late Monday morning,”.

“Harris then asked if he could purchase insurance from the government to cover the gap,” added the aide, who was struck by the similarity to Harris’s request and the public option he denounced as a gateway to socialized medicine.

Zaid Jilani at ThinkProgress reports that one Republican congressman has actually decided to do exactly what the Democratic foursome wants: He’s forgoing his congressional health plan.

“I’m not taking the pensions, I’m not taking pay raises and my family and I are bringing our own health care to Washington, DC,” Rep.-elect Bobby Shilling (R-IL) told ABC News. “Congress shouldn’t have anything better than the American people.”

Democrats should introduce one of two bills:
    1) No govt health care for Congress
    2) Open their plan to all Americans

  • MillMan

This is where “the rubber meets the road” for the anti care people. IE.: Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.; Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.; …Let them eat cake. … All that sort of stuff.

The artificial divide whereby repuglicans want to separate middle-class American families from their health care, their homes and their hopes for their childrens’ educations is not sustainable. It will die, one way or another, peacefully or not. Make no mistake. We are not all or even mostly blind to this.

The “have’s” want it all but the “have-nots” don’t deserve the same things, so say so-called “big shots”.
As Chenny said “its our due”.

All of Congress should be on the nations Health Care system. Im sure the Democratic Congressmen would balk at that request just as quickly. Fact is, the current Health Care proposal is totally lame. Single payer, public option, get the Health Care industry out of it. But that aint gonna happen.

Its like watching the FDA saying seafood in the Gulf is safe. Yeah, right – Go Obama.

  • Anonymous

You act like the Democrats want something that works for the people. Obama, Pelosi, Reid weren’t duped or railroaded by the Republicans. They are representing their constituency: The Health Care Industry.

  • Anonymous

You think Obama represents the Health Care Industry? For real? Yes, most of the Democrats in Congress on in their pocket, but if Obama was the guy making the call, we would have a public option. But you are aware that Laws have to be passed by Congress first, yes? Congress took out the public option.

  • Anonymous

Obama briefly brought up the public option, but soon dropped it like a bad habit. Never heard him mention it again. Obama has taken the handoff from Bush, and is sprinting towards tyranny with it.

  • Anonymous

Because he was told Congress would never pass it. Just like Financial Reform. Obama and Volcker had their own ideas, but Congress would never pass them, so we got a watered down Bill. If it was up to Obama, Volcker would have written the rules.

Being President is not as powerful as you think. Remember, Bush never made decisions, he was led around like a puppy dog.

Not only should rethugs give up their Government funded health care, but so should their relatives and all their supporters who oppose health care reform. They should turn in their medicare cards and drop their prescription drug benefits. After all these programs are entitlements which add to the deficit. Rethugs, their families and friends should also take their children out of public schools and enroll them in private schools, after all privatization is a good thing, and btw, those who receive social security benefits will do us a service to refuse them. Rethugs should not only talk the talk, but they must walk the walk. Only then can they be credible.

  • jimbo92107

I agree completely. And Democrats that voted against the public option should also pay for their own health insurance.

    Walk that walk, Blue Dogs!

All the democrats had to do was pass medicare for everyone. That would have taken about 500 pages not thousands. There would be no health care dictator deciding who gets exemptions and who doesn’t. There would be not increase in power to the IRS. By now everyone with a social security number would have health care. It would be so popular the democrats would have won this election. One reason that did not happen was not because of the republicans, it was because of the democrats and their take from the insurance industry. The democrats controlled both houses, they could have pushed this through, but no they came up with such a convoluted bill that NO ONE EVEN KNOWS what it will do. and oh yes the democrats would have had to give up their gold plated health care.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RZTZPSZHHZBGTFJACF5QJLHMU VICKI

Finally the Dems show a little bit of backbone, hopefully it’s not to late. Should have trotted out this plan when trying to get the bill passed.

  • http://thejoesteelblog.blogspot.com/ Joe_Steel

At one time I would have dismissed the demand to give up taxpayer-funded health care as a stunt. But considering the low level of cultural comprehension common among tea baggers and other Regressives, Crowley et al should do it. The Democrats lost the election because they weren’t very good at politics. This is politics at its finest. Spotlight the other guy’s hypocrisy and make it the issue. Politics is mostly about character and hypocrisy is a character flaw.

I find it funny that they think this would actually work. Politicians only have a problem with someone getting something for free when it’s not THEM getting it.

How to eliminate career politicians in Washington.

    1) Offer them health care, but at their own expense.
    2) Limit Senators to one term and Representatives to two.
    3) Deny retired members of Congress the right to become lobbyists, permanently.
    4) Eliminate the seniority system.
    5) Move the Capitol, Supreme Court, Pentagon, Treasury Dept., and Federal Reserve Bank headquarters to different cities (no two within 100 miles of each other).

Using his bully pulpit, he would of pleaded to the citizens to call their reps and put the pressure on. He didn’t do any of this however. What he did do, was make backroom deals with big pharma and the insurance companies. He is nothing more than another status qua corporate shill.

Everyone should have basic medical coverage for every health instance. That would include everything except unnecessary procedures such as cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery for burn victims, and other injured people of for a gross condition would be covered.

After that one could pay for a premium insurance that would pay fort the extras, private room instead of semi private or ward. Full cable TV vs basic cable. Fancy colored casts vs plain plaster casts.

Our society depends upon low wage earners. They shouldn’t be penalized just because they don’t get paid megabucks.

Congressional Members’ Personal Wealth Expands Despite Sour National Economy

    http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2010/11/congressional-members-personal-weal.html

and after reading this article it’s not like any of our politicians would be hard pressed to be able to afford health insurance. besides when the housing industry was on the top of the wave they were giving sweet deals to politician, there’s no reason for me to believe that the health insurance companies would be any different.

  • Anonymous

You don’t understand politics. Obama would have allowed the public option. In order to gain support to pass it through Congress it had to come off the table in order to appease enough Congressmen and Senators to get it to pass. Yes there were backroom deals. That though is the price for some votes.

I don’t like it and think the whole thing stinks. Especially with Health Care and the Financial reform. But that is the way Washington, and even your State government works. Yes, Obama could have used his moral suasion. Why he didn’t is beyond me. In my opinion he should have, but I don’t get to tell the White House how to operate and this is what ended up costing the Democrats the election.

Term limits won’t work, as they will just sue to stay in office. They’ve done this successfully in several states,.

The key is simple – Never vote for an incumbent again.

If only 10% of voters followed this rule the career politician would vanish.

Some good politicians would have to be sacrificed for the greater good. Regardless, if you love your congressman, sned him home to do good in the community.

Your idea would have worked if the Dems were in lockstep like the repubs always are. The Dems always have groups within fighting the mainstream so even though it looks on paper like they have the majority, they had blue dogs to deal with who sided with repubs on the major legislation. Many of the blue dogs are/were DINOS and are no longer going to be in congress, but their votes counted. Theoretically, they had lieberman for the 60th vote in the senate, but we all know what a joke that was. The big money passed around by insurance companies went to both sides and did what it was supposed to so you can blame both parties, the insurance companies and the ignorance of people willing to work against their best interests for the failure of the public option or medicare for all.

  • Anonymous

If they had a gathering of 250 people including incoming congress people and their families at the health care informational meeting, I’m guessing there won’t be many more than 1 newly elected person turning down health care. Good for Mr. Crowley for pointing out the hypocrisy of many of these people in campaigning against it, then being the first in line with their hands out when push comes to shove. I wonder if the voters who put them in office who are living with insurance of their own are aware of what’s going on once these people got to Washington.

The problem is, if you remove all those things, then the “average Joe” who gets in to Congress would have a hard time doing their job. Taxpayers pay for all bills related to their government doing it’s job. It’s fair and makes sense.

The problem comes in when very rich people spend their own money to get into Congress. Clearly they are “up to something” since rich people get rich by gaming the system and only care about getting richer. It’s _who they are_. Like Brewster said “who spends millions of their own dollars to get into office unless they plan on stealing it all back.. with interest!.. vote none of the above!”.

The biggest failing of our government is its failing to do the work of “the people”, and instead does the work of the “few” (the group they belong to). The system has been hijacked by the few and they are beating “the people” over the head with it. … just like women in Congress who get the same pay as their male counterparts just voted to BLOCK all women getting equal pay for equal work. They aren’t willing to give the public the same playing field the public gives THEIR EMPLOYEES. …. game rigged.

Until the public stops electing rich, self-serving, pro-corporate ass-hats, we’ll continue to have less while the few gather all the wealth and piss on us.. that’s your “trickle down” right there. No, it’s not a warm summer rain running down your back.

And really.. 10 kids? With a world that’s over populated already, and so many people suffering while trying to fight for what resources there are, what kind of ignorant, selfish prick adds SO MUCH MORE pain and suffering to the world?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

Don’t hold your breath.. When it comes to Tea Bagger candidates, I see two types. Those ignorant enough to actually believe the rhetoric and those who used the ignorance of the typical tea bagger just to get in office. The liars don’t want oversight, and the ignorant don’t understand the financial sector and will avoid it like the plague so as to not reveal their ignorance. They’re stupid, but not _that_ stupid.

28 days? Most educational institutions require a six- or twelve-month period before health benefits kick in. Dr. Harris (can’t you feel the irony right there?) is highly-trained but, it seems, utterly clueless. This does not speak well for his future performance in Congress. Surprised? Neither am I.

  • Anonymous

When Medicare was first passed, the idea was to provide coverage for people who couldn’t get it (because of age or bad health history), or lost it (because their group coverage expired upon their retirement). Medicare wasn’t offered to people under 65 because it was assumed they’d have coverage at work or could buy it at a reasonable price individually.

That was the 1960s. This is now. Something like 50 million Americans are where all senior citizens were in 1965. They can’t get coverage, and/or they can’t afford it. It makes no sense to still provide Medicare to senior citizens while denying it to people under 65.

  • Anonymous

Faux probably won’t mention it. MSNBC will probably do a feature on it.

Blue dog Democrats are proof that the two-party system is silly and unworkable. Ben Nelson and Dennis Kucinich are members of the same party…does that make a particle of sense? What do Rand Paul and Olympia Snowe have in common except a GOP label?

What a different world it would be if every candidate for office ran on his or her own party label instead of declaring allegiance to Democrats and Republicans. Think about it. There would be no Democratic or Republican National Committee, so money would largely vanish from politics (although multi-millionaires could still finance their own campaigns). Representatives could vote their consciences without threats from party leaders, because there wouldn’t be any party leaders. Lobbyists would have to deal with Senators and Representatives individually, meaning K Street-style maneuvering would disappear. Best of all, “straight ticket” voting would be impossible, meaning that candidates would be elected based on merit, not party allegiance.

    Oh, what a wonderful dream!

I completely agree that political parties are out of control and way too powerful. We should go back to individual candidates running on only their own merit and not needing to raise money every day they come to work in congress. How much per day did Rahm say each House member needed to raise per day to keep the job? It was way too much and think how that money could be spent instead of using it to tell your constituents your opponent is a liar.

No, Congress puts together the Legislation, not the President. The President can veto it, but he can only discuss his agenda with Congress, not “set” the agenda. It was either no Health Care Reform, or what we got. Congress would not have done it any other way. If Obama vetoed, there would have been no Bill at all. And it’s a good thing that passed, because the Republicans that are taking over the House would never have passed it. If they try to repeal it, THEN Obama has real power. He can just Veto it.

As members of Congress, these Republicans are employees of the Federal Government, not welfare constituents. Trying to point out their opposition to extending welfare class insurance as hypocritical is thus disengenuous. The GOP is not trying to take away anyone’s employee sponsored insurance plans, however, the great democratic scheme is certainly putting upwards pressure on the cost of everyone’s healthcare and insurance costs.
