PARIS — Scientists at CERN said they had trapped dozens of hydrogen “antimatter” atoms, a technical feat that boosts research into one of the great puzzles of particle physics.

Under a theory expounded in 1931 by the eccentric British physicist Paul Dirac, when energy transforms into matter, it produces a particle and its mirror image — called an anti-particle — which holds the opposite electrical charge.

When particles and anti-particles collide, they annihilate each other in a small flash of energy.

If everything were equal at the birth of the cosmos, matter and anti-matter would have existed in the same quantities. The observable Universe would have had no chance of coming into being, as these opposing particles would have wiped each other out.

In reality, though, matter came to be far more dominant, and antimatter is rare.

But understanding why there is this huge imbalance presents a daunting technical challenge.

Until now, experiments have produced anti-atoms, namely of hydrogen, but only in a free state. That means they instantly collide with ordinary matter and get annihilated, making it impossible to measure them or study their structure.

In a paper published on Wednesday by the British journal Nature, a team at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva explain a method of snaring these so-called antihydrogen atoms.

Experiments conducted in its ALPHA laboratory found a way of using strong, complex magnetic fields and a vacuum to capture and hold the mirror-image particles apart from ordinary matter.

Thousands of antihydrogen atoms have been made in the lab, but in the most successful experiment so far, 38 have been trapped long enough — one-tenth of a second — for them to be studied.

“For reasons that no-one yet understands, nature ruled out antimatter,” CERN physicist Jeffrey Hangst said.

“It is thus very rewarding, and a bit overwhelming, to look at the ALPHA device and know that it contains stable, neutral atoms of antimatter. This inspires us to work that much harder to see if antimatter holds some secret.”

I’m sure the military is on it. But unlike Hiroshima, an anti-matter explosion could wipe out the planet. Isn’t there a mathematical formula out there that explains why the universe isn’t full of ETs – That once a civilization gets to a certain point there is a higher chance of obliterating themselves and a miniscule chance that they’ll grow enough to make it through.

    We’re so fncked!

    Then their heads would explode.

That’s too bad, I was hoping for an anit-particle recount on all Rethuglicons that were elected by money only, voter lintimidations, threats of violence. I can see it now, a Blackwater assault team on every corner, there won’t even be enough space for even a 7-11 store, but, you can bet the will have team on call at all super Wal-Mart Stores…… keeping the peace. ha ha ha.

i am pretty sure that if you carve open the skulls of bush, cheney, wolfie, rummy, and the rest of the neocons, and lets not forget that fucking skank palin. you will find antimatter in its natural state. it has already been proven that it runs counter to all logic and natural precedent.

Is “anti-matter” “dark matter”? Confined within a “webbing” that is the core of the brane by boundaries formed by “dark energy”? Of course, it is said there is much, much more “dark matter” than matter, or does our current testing methods just appear to make “anti-matter” much, much more “dense” than matter? Can “dark energy” effect our testing equipment in some way to account for this anomoly?

  • Anonymous

No anti matter and dark matter are very different

‘Dark matter’, which may or may not exist, doesn’t react with light and is used to explain why the universe doesn’t fly apart. Einstein used the ‘cosmological constant’ to explain why the universe doesn’t fall apartbefore dark matter was hypothesized.

Anti-Matter is a littel trickier to explain. It is the opposite of matter where the center is massive and negative and the electron is replaced by a positive charge which is small like an electron.

Dark matter is not detectable without using gravity. Light and electromagnetism doesn’t react with it.

Dark matter also does not emit black body radiation.

Explain this. If there is more matter than anti matter how is it that anti matter is still around?

    LOL…good one

  • SuccumbingToSanity

I wonder if the annihilation of Glenn Beck with the anti-matter Glenn Beck will leave remnants of a colourless (yet pungent) fluid that is often found in rotting faecal matter…

  • Schmeynman

If all matter were converted to anti-matter, there would no longer be a stability problem.

Get on it CERN; there’s a better chance of achieving this than achieving stability in Afghanistan.

  • Kill Bill

Energy can not be created or destroyed and can only change forms. It may be that matter is returned back to its pure energy state after entering a black hole. That is to say that maybe the missing anti-matter isnt missing its just beyond the event horizon.

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ protobone

When two ‘anti-atoms’ collide in a super-collider, they produce a ‘posi-atom’. You know on account of two negatives produce a positive. Ergo an equation- X = ^X4.7 – thx.4sq…
I don’t know what it might mean.
However, the military will be having some fun with an anti-matter IED. You know, ‘intellectually explosive devise’? Cause IF the U.S. military gets their warmongering mitts on an anti-matter bomb well, oh holy bat shit, our planet will be in some serious trouble then.

  • Anonymous

I can see this having some interesting implications in the energy sector… Let’s be optimistic! Maybe this will turn into a viable alternative.

  • Anonymous

It’s not present naturally. It’s generated in a laboratory.

  • http://twitter.com/shivabeach Shiva

and even if it does exist naturally, consider the space involved. This would be like you leaving Earth today in searching for your twin or mirror image throughout the universe. Remember that and I matter and matter have to be a mirror image

“when energy transforms into matter, it produces a particle and its mirror image — called an anti-particle — which holds the opposite electrical charge.”

it’s easy to make the assumption that those two particles would annihilate each other instantly upon contact. But it’s the contact that is the assumption. We are talking about something so incredibly small that your bedroom would seem like the universe to it

    It doesn’t matter.

Have you ever read the theory that dark matter is not present in this universe at all, rather, it is the gravitational force of another universe on our universe?

  • Anonymous

I can hear the whispers of revolt among christianists everywhere: This is blasphemy!

  • Eyeball_Kid

Ah… “The stars are matter, we’re matter, it doesn’t matter.” — Captain Beefheart.

  • Anonymous

Yeah I have heard that theory. Personally i don’t care for it very much
because that would imply that we are going to merge with those other
universes, because they would expand to meet each other and become
homogeneous. That scenario doesn’t make much sense to me.

At the same time I am skeptical of dark matter. It has gravity but it can’t
interact with ‘light matter’ like us? Gravity is derivative of mass when
you get to the equation used to judge very large bodies, so no mass no
gravity. However F=MA, so a massive object should be able to make force .
Maybe the dark matter is immobile and has no acceleration? But immobile
    relative to what?

I think that further advances in physics will make the concept of dark
matter disappear just like phlogiston, phrenology and junk DNA

I am guessing it takes a lot more energy to generate anti-matter than can be obtained by its subsequent reactions with matter.

Anti-matter bombs would be a trifle unstable, don’t you think?

  • Anonymous

Wait I don’t remember which day God created antimatter….. Anyone remember that passage? Or is that one of the things the three wise men brought Jesus?

  • Anonymous

Antimatter is produced by certain types of radioactive decay and can be produced by collisions using particle accelerators. It is produced in fusion reactions that occur in stars and can be produced at high levels in extremely violent events like supernovas. However, it doesn’t last long because of the annihilation reaction. But the point is that matter is the predominant form of, er, matter in the universe.

In case it matters to you…

Actually, what I don’t understand is why annihilation occurs.

Can only opposite particles annihilate (i.e., protons + anti-protons, positrons + electrons)?

How do positrons and protons or antiprotons and electrons interact?

Why didn’t I learn more physics?

    Does this matter to anyone?
