Former President George H.W. Bush is among 15 people selected to be awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom, the White House announced Wednesday night.

The Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, is awarded for “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

A White House announcement specifically lauded Bush’s work with former President Bill Clinton on charitable initiatives.

The move was widely expected to be seen as a bipartisan gesture from Obama to Republicans on Capitol Hill, fresh off a round of mid-term elections that ended Democrats’ House majority but left them in control of the US Senate.

The announcement was made a day after former President George W. Bush respectfully declined to criticize President Obama, during a press conference in Dallas at the future site of the Bush library.

Others named by the Obama administration include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett, civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, poet and author Maya Angelou, holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein, former AFL-CIO leader John Sweeney and more.

“These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they’ve excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place,” Obama said in a published statement.

Former President Bush, a World War II veteran, also served as vice president to President Ronald Reagan and as director of the CIA.

Last year’s Medal of Freedom recipients included deceased Sen. Edward Kennedy, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, deceased Republican Rep. Jack Kemp, deceased gay rights activist Harvey Milk and 12 others.

    WTF???

C’mon… this is a joke right? It’s really an exploding Medal Of Freedom and at the same time you’re gonna give Clinton one of those exploding cigars, right? That would be FUNNY!!! har har :|

  • Johnny Warbucks

Oh, gawd help ‘em all. I don’t care to read what – I can only anticipate – is a self-adulating/congratulatory POS story. However, I do have to ask, what’s the medal for? In honor of Daddy throwing up on the Japanese back when he was Pres or for spawning Junior? Lord knows the second one is quite the feat.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Obama got a Nobel Piss…errrr…Peace Prize, I guess he wants to pass on the good fortune.

Quid pro quo: The announcement was made a day after former President George W. Bush respectfully declined to criticize President Obama, during a press conference in Dallas at the future site of the Bush library.

This only denigrates the meaning of the medal for the other recipients. Bush Sr never freed anyone. He is an enabler of the enslavement of the American people and the American system.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/5ADH43ZCS3NITAIJKNHHOXH5SY C H

Well if they give it to this man, I might as well get it too. Evidently this is a gesture to a party that would tar and feather the President if they could. And this won’t make a difference except to make the groveling for compromise that much more sickening. And it makes no sense.

    Stupid!!!!

  • Anonymous

I second that WTF! There are so many more deserving of this award. Poppy Bush?!

  • Anonymous

Obama continues to sorely disappoint. I am ready to support a primary candidate to run against him.

G.H.W. Bush was only responsible for the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands in Nicaragua, El Salvador and elsewhere in Central America,……. just for starters.

You know, we seem to be getting more like the British all the time. We have become an oligarchy, and now we have investiture ceremonies. Why don’t we just knight the bugger?

  • Anonymous

Can someone take out a full page ad in the Washington Post to that effect? Perhaps somehow the message will get to him?????????? Perhaps if he just read the Webster Dictionary definition of “leadership” or “lead”? All he does anymore it seems is figure out which way the wind is blowing ( as told to him by someone who does not know what truly happened with the last election….geeze!!) and then head in that direction with the rest of the republicans. He really does not know what it means to LEAD and sadly we all thought he did when he was running as president. He got all swallowed up by the black hole in Washington. I think it started when his kids got a $3500 swing set for the back yard of the White house.

  • Anonymous

Well, I guess if you can’t be one of Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Person(s) in the World,” you can be a Medal of Freedom winner. I doubt you could be both, and with the bar this low, you have to be one or the other.

  • Anonymous

    PUUUUKKEE!!! Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Ronald Reagan sold weapons to our enemies. Broke the law to do it. Lied to the citizens of the United States about it. An investigation into this treason was stopped by Bush Sr, because he pardoned everyone before we ever able to find out why. Did Reagan do it as paying our enemy back the favorite when the enemy held off releasing the hostages in order to help Ronald Reagan win the election? We will never know thanks to traitor Bush Sr.

    Look at these dates:

August 25, 1988 Iraq gasess Kurds near the Turkish borders. What did Bush Sr do?

Oct. 2, 1989 Bush Sr signs National Security Directive 26, calling for closer US ties to Iraq. That is what Bush Sr did.

    How about this:

Jan 1990 Investigations discover $3 billion in unauthorized BNL loans to Iraq. What did Bush Sr do?

Jan 17, 1990 Bush Sr waives embargo placed by Congress on Eximbank credits to Iraq.

Bush Sr then conned this nation into a war with Iraq all the while pretending the Ms. Glaspie tapes didn’t exist.

The first Gulf War was nothing more than a live exhibition of war toys. Bush Sr went on to work for a war profiteering company as did Sec of Defense Dick Cheney.

When a Republican pats you on the back, he’s just feeling where to stick the knife.

As a newspaper boy (delivery kid) back in the ’60s, who delivered the morning edition and evening editions, and read them both daily, I recall the morning of the JFK assassination a news story citing former VP Richard Nixon warning Kennedy to stay out of Dallas.

Nixon was claiming the city was in a very dangerous mood, and it was intended as an adult, and serious, suggestion to JFK.

Shortly before Nixon’s death, he gave an interview which never got much publicity, ‘natch. The foreign reporter questioned him on this warning, and Nixon claimed it was due to three people he had seen the day prior in Dallas: David Atlee Phillips (chief of CIA’s Western Hemisphere Operations and career disinformation specialist), Jack Ruby (who had his name legally changed from Rubenstein when he married into the mob; Nixon had known him when he worked for the House Select Committee on UnAmerican Activities as a private investigator), and young George H.W. Bush.

Nixon wasn’t sure what was up at that time, but he was damned suspicious and actually concerned for President Kennedy’s health.

The banksters, beginning with Richard Nixon in 1960, wanted to choose every present and future president. They failed with that election — probably because old Joe Kennedy, the nation’s youngest bank president and possibly most brilliant criminal mastermind (was suspected of being the mastermind behind Prohibition, from which he, and a number of other Wall Streeters, profited enormously) — interfered with their plans by buying up the occasional ward boss during that election.

Of course, Kennedy turned out quite differently than many might have suspected: his Alliance for Progress in Latin America went counter to United Fruit, later to be changed to Chiquita corporation, his talk of doing away with the oil depletion allowance, his suggestion to increase the financial transaction tax (in effect since 1914, with the establishment of the Revenue Act, and increased during the Great Depression by FDR, later to disappear altogether during the Johnson Administration in 1966), standing up to US Steel (heavily owned, if not entirely, by the Rockefeller family), General Electric and others, and shortly prior to his death JFK sent out memos to the State Department and Pentagon to plan for withdrawal of all US military advisors in South Vietnam.

That, and many other activities on Kennedy’s part, did not sit well with the bank-oil cartel, and especially with the Rockefellers and Harrimans (both David Rockefeller, and Averell Harriman, were zero degree removed from almost everyone involved with the assassination of JFK and the subsequent Warren Commission, the only two exceptions being Oswald, and Jack Ruby, formerly Rubenstein, from whom they were only one degree of separation — they knew someone who knew each of them).

Since at least the Nixon presidency, each and every president has been the bankster choice: Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama.

Over the previous 35 years every president or vice-president has been a member of David Rockefeller’s Trilateral Commission; and that ain’t NO COINCIDENCE. (Including Dick Cheney and George H.W. Bush.)

Just goes to show – there’s only one party with two fake heads, and we join one head or the other, and argue over which head is politically correct, while the one party just moves forward more and more towards a police state. Meanwhile, one head awards the other head the slavery is freedom medal.

I should read the book. It is difficult for me to believe that President Obama is connected with these scoundrels. I think he is constantly being squeezed by these guys or this cartel, but I cannot believe he is one of them. He would not be so hated by the Rthugs if he were one of them. He has championed reigning in big banks and health insurance company rip-offs. Having not yet read the book, it seems that you extrapolated the legacy to Obama. If Clinton and Obama are part of the crime ring, why do the rethugs hate them so much?

he has paid lip service to actually reigning in the banks and health insurance companies. i heard the author of ‘family of secrets’ interviewed on a talk radio show, and his thought was that obama was actually warned off of real reform, and did just enough to keep himself from jfk’s fate.
presidents come and go, the banksters stay. give the people a little ‘reform’ to shut them up for a while, then work the loopholes and it’s business as usual.

That’s political theater, and that’s all that has ever been. Reflect on how much time Bill Clinton has spent with George (pappy) HW Bush, and how the Clintons became worth over $100 million in the few years after he left office (principally from lobbying for all those “free trade” agreements, or the offshoring of all American jobs, and more tax bennies and financial deregs for the multinationals).

Obama spent 12 years in the University of Chicago academic system as a prof or asst. prof., and no authentic dem has ever come out of that place, originally financed by John D. Rockefeller and long known as the true Rockefeller U.

Look at all the members of Obama’s administration who were former members of David Rockefeller’s Trilateral Commission: (p. 13, but please read all the members)

    http://www.trilateral.org/download/file/TC%20list%2011-10(2).pdf

And Diana Farrell (queen of jobs offshoring), Larry Summers, Timothy Geithner (both first appointed by Geo. H.W. Bush) are not the choices of an authentic democrat.

And he left Gates in as SecDef — whatever for? And Mueller in as FBI director– WTF???

Negative, Obama is looking foward to a future Goldman Sachs partnership or millions to come — that’s always the deal.

Ha ha ha ha. George W. Bush DID NOT SUCCEED in winning a second term. John Kerry won the 2004 election, and it wasn’t even that close. Of course, Kerry shouldn’t have been the candidate in 2004, except for the fact that Al Gore was cheated in 2000.

George W. Bush is the only president in American history who was elected AND reelected under fraudulent circumstances. Think about that, Mr. Troll. Disenfranchisement of legal voters enabled his first election AND his second. That’s not a political opinion, that’s a statement of fact based on the evidence.

Why haven’t the American people been told the truth? Because the media were collectively afraid (with just reason) that to tell the truth would engender a backlash from advertisers and stockholders.

Nixon was quoted as saying, “The Warren Commission was the greatest myth ever perpetuated (sic) on the American people.”

I think he meant “perpetrated.” But to give the devil his due, Nixon (who wasn’t JFK’s closest friend) did express his true feelings about the Warren Commission, which had been assembled by LBJ for one purpose only…to eliminate nasty rumors that might have interfered with LBJ’s 1964 re-election campagin. It succeeded, tragically enough.

They don’t hate them. But they’re willing to pretend otherwise in order to marshal political power.

You take the Republicans at face value. That’s wrong. What they’re about is simply being in control. They don’t care about governing. They don’t care about what’s best for the country. They care about themselves. The essence of laissez-faire capitalism is greed, i.e., enlightened self-interest. That translates as profit on Wall Street, and as power in Washington.

    Um…rlau290541…

Anyone who actually believes that continuing lavish tax-breaks to the idle class = “giving tax brakes to those that can actually create a job that produces true goods and services” needs to take Economics 101 – again…

Jobs – and the businesses(*) which provide them – are NOT created or sustained by people opening businesses…they are created and sustained by a large-enough pool of consumers who need, want (and this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART…so read carefully & take notes) and can AFFORD to purchase the product or service that business provides. Most of those jobs have been shipped overseas, so many if not most of the U.S. population is underemployed — too poor and insecure to buy much of anything…except Chinese crap from MallWart.

The wealthy have had their lavish tax-cuts for the last 7 years – including the last 2 years of this current recession – and we’re STILL waiting for all of the jobs they’re supposed to create if they just get their tax-cuts a little longer…or a little bigger?. How long are the WrongWing Pol gonna lie to the gullible Wrong-Wing Voters — and how long are those gullible Wrong-Wing Voters gonna keep standing in the rain, waiting for the benevolence of their wealthy masters, until it dawns on them that they’ve been had?

(*) There are, of course, a few exceptions…the wealthy always have disposable income to spend on luxury items like $20,000 watches and $250,000 autos – but most of those luxury items are manufactured overseas (meaning few `real’ jobs on these shores).

to: Myth_buster, W.C. Fields, and robertlockwoodmills: Wow. I sure have a lot to learn. I thought I was cynical! I am disappointed now. Are you really telling me that my vote did not count? Are you telling me that her majesty $arah might be a cartel rethug, too? Is that how she got in? She seems easier to control than Obama. My husband is now very curious about all these connections. We are ordering today, not Bush’s book. Also, it seems that you guys are saying that my previous posts predicting Jeb in 2012 is more than likely going to happen, no matter how I vote. Maybe the youth of America who did not show-up or mail-in their votes for the primaries this month know more about the inner workings than I. Thanks for the education in reality. This is truly disheartening.

A little insight of the HERO for out younger viewers.

    Bush’s Betrayal

Chester Mierzejewski, an old war buddy of Bush, who said he was angered by the “false assertions” made by candidate Bush when describing the incident, gave a different account.

After 44 years of silence, Mierzejewski, who also was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, told the New York Post that Bush had abandoned his crew to death when there was another choice.

He said he was approximately 100 feet in front of Bush’s plane as the turret gunner for Squadron Commander Douglas Melvin’s plane, “so close he could see in the cockpit” of Bush’s bomber. Mierzejewski’s close wartime buddy was one of the two crew members in Bush’s plane.

According to Mierzejewski, the squadron was in a tight-formation bombing raid against a Japanese radio installation on an island reported to be heavily fortified. He saw “a puff of smoke” come from Bush’s plane which quickly disappeared and was certain only one man parachuted from the plane and that it was Bush, the pilot.

Mierzejewski said the Avenger torpedo bomber was engineered so that it could successfully crash land on water and that Bush doomed his own crew by bailing out and leaving the bomber out of control.

Other World War II veterans also expressed concern about Bush parachuting out of the aircraft. “He had a moral obligation to put that plane in the water in an emergency landing,” Robert Flood, a former B-17 bombardier told the press. “He violated the primary rule for a captain of a multi-crew aircraft: The pilot never leaves the airplane with anybody in it.”

Pete Brandon, a Marine Corps Avenger pilot, who also served in the South Pacific, said an Avenger pilot had two choices: Set the plane down in the water or hold it steady until the two crewmen could prepare to jump.

“In an Avenger, only the pilot wore a parachute,” Brandon said. “The two crewmen wore harnesses. If the order came to bail out, they had to take chest parachutes from a shelf and strap them on – and bail out. The Avenger was very unstable. The pilot had to be at the controls the whole time or it would go right over on its back.”

Steve Hart, then Vice President Press Secretary, described Mierzejewski’s account as absurd. Hart said, “The Vice President has told us time and time again what happened that day. To suggest that the account is inaccurate is absurd.”

What is absurd is the conflicting or missing reports of exactly what happened to Bush’s two crew members. According to the Post, the intelligence report on the loss of Bush’s plane in September, 1944 notes that it had become “standard doctrine” for VT 51, Bush’s bomber squadron, “to make bombing runs on targets near water so as to retire over the water. This puts pilot and crew in position for water rescue in event of forced landing . . . ”

The same document reports, without attribution, that “smoke and flame” engulfed Bush’s engine, and that “Bush and one other person were seen to bail out. The chute of the other person who bailed out did not open.”

The report was signed by Melvin and an intelligence officer, Lt. Martin E. Kilpatrick. Contrary to normal military procedure, the report was not dated and Navy archives were unable to supply a subsequently completed report.

Gunner Lawrence Mueller, who lives in Milwaukee, flew on the ChiChi Jima mission. When asked who had the best view, he replied unhesitatingly: “The turret gunner in Melvin’s plane.”

Mueller’s recollections, jogged by a log book that he kept, support Mierzejewski’s account. And it was noted that Bush’s plane was the only one from the squadron that did not return. Mueller told the Post, “No parachute was sighted except Bush’s when the plane went down.” He also said no one mentioned a fire engulfing Bush’s plane or he would have noted it in the log book.

The Finback, the sub which picked up Bush from his raft in the water, made no report of a fire on Bush’s plane, but did comment on his crew: “Bush stated that he failed to see his crew’s parachutes and believed they had jumped when the plane was still over ChiChi Jima, or they had gone down with the plane.”

About six hours later, the Finback picked up another pilot, James W. Beckman, from the USS Enterprise, who stated that it was known that only one man had parachuted from Bush’s plane. “This decided us to discontinue any further search of that area . . .”

Although the heart of Bush’s story about the incident remains the same, Mierzejewski is adamant Bush’s account is not the truth and blames Bush for the abandonment and deaths of both men.

“I think he could have saved those lives, if they were alive. I don’t know that they were, but at least they had a chance if he had attempted a water landing,” Mierzejewski said.

God, I don’t know if I can handle much more of Obama’s bipartisanship. This is sickening.

Bush the Elder was up to his ears in a number of slimy operations over his life in politics. The one that perhaps should have gotten him hung for treason was the October Surprise that involved secret negotiations with the Iranians to keep the embassy hostages captive until after the 1980 election in order to deny a victory to then-President Carter. This operation involved arranging weapons shipments to an enemy of the American people at that time and later morphed into the Iran-Contra Scandal. Both Reagan and Bush should have been tried for treason.

I wonder if any liberals feel remorse for all the shit they talked over the past ten years only to realize now that George Bush was only a symptom of one monstrous Federal system gone bad.

I hope it felt good to demonize cowboys( even though W never was an actual cowboy, just a new england frat boy). It sure must feel good to look down your nose at common working class folks and say that they were duped into voting for Republicans that didn’t represent their interests. Hope you enjoyed it for 8 years. Now its clear Democrats aren’t any more intelligent but most democrats probably don’t even have the attention span to appreciate the irony.

I agree, this is too much.
    What is Obama thinking?

Bush Sr attacked a small country in order to arrest ONE PERSON!

    (Panama and Noriega)
23 American troops killed and 325 wounded.
Afterward, Panama was lead by essentially the same kind of leader as Noriega.

It cost a small fortune and according to Wiki:
“For nearly two weeks after the invasion, there was widespread looting and lawlessness, a contingency which the United States military indicated it had not anticipated.”

    Sound familiar?
    Do you miss him yet?

  • Obi-jonKenobi

Oh, and at the end of Bush the Elder’s one-term Presidency, he pardoned the all the people that had been indicted by the Iran-Contra Special Prosecutor, Lawrence Walsch. The Bush Administration – and their Rethugliecon allies – demonized Walsch, who was an old-school Republican, for doing his job. Walsch was stonewalled for years in the investigation and had slowly worked his way up the food chain to a couple of major players with the hope that some on them would turn. Bush ended that by pardoning all of them.

The presidential Medal of Freedom for George H Bush is as much a joke as the Nobel Peace Prize awarded the new criminal president Obama.

For the full story about the Bush Crime Family check out “Family of Secrets : The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces That Put It in the White House, and What Their Influence Means for America” by Russ Baker. Excellent full exposure of the whole criminal cabal, their shell companies as cover for CIA covert operations, friendship with the Bin Laden family and much more.

George H. W. Bush once stated he didn’t remember where he was on November 22, 1963 and then concocted an elaborate cover story to “prove” he was not in Dallas . He was connected with George de Mohrenschildt, a shady white Russian emigre, who had befriended Lee Harvey Oswald and his wife Marina in 1962 and did favors for them. Just one degree of separation between “Papa” Bush and the patsy assassin of Kennedy!

Several days ago in a radio interview Russ Baker explained that the Bush family are actually just foot solders for the power elite.

It wouldn’t be very surprising to me if these thugs had an active hand in the false flag 9/11 attacks.

If he was going to give the medal of honor for charitable works Carter and Clinton are more deserving the Bush! He certainly didn’t do anything voluntarily! No previous republican president has done more voluntarily than Carter or Clinton. The ex republican presidents usually just play golf and drink! He is too feeble and old to be much help. I always wondered why anyone would ask him for help and now we know! He needed to have a reason to deserve the medal of honor and this was it. Jeez, sounds like a cheesey award not really an honor any more. First Tenet and now papa bush. wow.

Made a faux pas yesterday. I said I felt former Bush Sr. deserved this medal. I am admitting I was ignorant of Senior’s policies. I only got interested in politics when President Obama ran for office. I was one of the silent majority who accepted what was. I felt that if two people of opposite sides of the spectrum could work together for peace and for the good of the people was enough. I am aware that President Carter has done and continues to do more for charities and for peace than any other President other than Clinton. I have a letter from President Carter on my wall in reply to one I wrote him.

Again, I apologize for supporting this medal because of my political ignorance.
