Ex-Homeland Security secretary’s company lobbies for body scanner maker

The CEO of one of the two companies licensed to sell full body scanners to the TSA accompanied President Barack Obama to India earlier this month, a clear sign of the deep ties between Washington politicians and the companies pushing to have body scanners installed at all US airports.

Deepak Chopra, chairman and CEO of OSI Systems and no relation to the New Age spiritualist, was one of a number of CEOs who traveled with the president on his three-day trip to India, which focused primarily on expanding business ties between the US and the emerging Asian power.

“I am honored to be selected to play a role in this very important cause,” Chopra said in a statement ahead of the trip. “Currently the trade between US and India is only one tenth of the amount of trade between US and China. There is substantial opportunity to improve the trade relations with India for mutual economic gain.”

Chopra’s company manufactures the Rapiscan brand of body scanners, currently being deployed across US airports. He joined the CEOs of such companies as GE, PepsiCo and United Technologies on the trip.

The president announced commercial deals worth some $10 billion during the trip, which he said would add some 50,000 jobs to the US economy. India decided earlier this year to implement body scanners at its airports, in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. (An early experiment with body scanners was quickly scuttled in 2007 due to privacy concerns.)

That a manufacturer of body scanners accompanied the US president on a foreign trip shows the extent of the ties between the industry and the US government. With anger growing at the intrusive news screening procedures, many observers have focused attention on Michael Chertoff, the former Homeland Security secretary whose consultancy, the Chertoff Group, counts OSI as a client.

The original orders for body scanners were made in 2005, during the Bush administration when Chertoff was still head of Homeland Security. Chertoff stepped up his lobbying for body scanners late last year after the attempted Christmas Day bombing.

“Mr. Chertoff should not be allowed to abuse the trust the public has placed in him as a former public servant to privately gain from the sale of full-body scanners under the pretense that the scanners would have detected ‘[the alleged Christmas Day bomber's] explosive,” Kate Hanni, founder of FlyersRights.org, told the Washington Post.

“Airport security has always been compromised by corporate interests,” wrote James Ridgeway at Mother Jones. “When it comes to high-tech screening methods, the TSA has a dismal record of enriching private corporations with failed technologies, and there are signs that the latest miracle device may just bring more of the same.”

The fact President Obama took the CEO of the body scanners on his foreign trip to the country they’re being produced is a matter of common sense and diplomacy for an issue that in reality is seen as positive.

I can agree that nobody should be making a profit off it if they held a public office dealing with this issue but then again lobbyist who use to hold office isn’t really anything new.

    This is interesting:

Michael Chertoff was former Director of Homeland security and second in command at Justice. This is the guy who let off the Dancing Israelis, legally represented the man (Magdy Elamir) who funded the 19 blamed 9/11 Arabs (funny, how the media never brings that up). Chertoff is now bilking the terrorism business as CEO for a company selling body scanners to the Transportation Security Administration.

I researched the name Magdy Elamir and found lots of interesting links.

Also a few political donations are listed here:

For some reason, my factual comment was removed, so here it is again:

The reason Barack Obama is supporting all of the inappropriate molestation at airport checkpoints is because Barack Obama knows that if you have a choice between the molesters and the machines, you will opt for the machines.

Barack Obama is helping his evil friends sell the porno-scan machines. That’s all there is to it.

And, yes, that makes Barack Obama a professional child molester. That is not hyperbole in any sense. It’s a fact.

This certainly is interesting. Quite a few things come to mind here. Michael Chertoff (former head of Homeland Security) has his company, The Chertoff Group, representing OSI (Rapiscan). Now, Deepak Chopra, head of OSI is accommodating Obama to India. As stated in this article “India decided earlier this year to implement body scanners at its airports, in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks”.

The India government has suspected that David Headley, who they say is a CIA asset is named as a planner in the Mumbai attacks.

David Headley was a double agent for the CIA at the time of Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Hmmmm… now would the CIA (and Chertoff) use asset Headley to plan a massive attack in Mumbai and then have the U.S. take advantage of this to sell full body scanners to India? I hate to be that suspicious but so much weird and corrupt crap has happened since 9/11.

    Hmmmmm?

“Currently the trade between US and India is only one tenth of the amount of trade between US and China. There is substantial opportunity to improve the trade relations with India for mutual economic gain.”

Jeebus! Mutual economic gain, my arse! Free trade with countries that have substantially lower standards of living, standards of work, and government subsidies is an expansion of the death trap that Dems (Clinton) and Repubs (W.) have put the U.S. into since the early .90s.

“Contrary to the predictions of its supporters, China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) has failed to reduce its trade surplus with the United States or increase overall U.S. employment. The rise in the U.S. trade deficit with China between 1997 and 2006 has displaced production that could have supported 2,166,000 U.S. jobs. Most of these jobs (1.8 million) have been lost since China entered the WTO in 2001. Between 1997 and 2001, growing trade deficits displaced an average of 101,000 jobs per year, or slightly more than the total employment in Manchester, New Hampshire. Since China entered the WTO in 2001, job losses increased to an average of 353,000 per year—more than the total employment in greater Akron, Ohio. Between 2001 and 2006, jobs were displaced in every state and the District of Columbia. Nearly three-quarters of the jobs displaced were in manufacturing industries. Simply put, the promised benefits of trade liberalization with China have been unfulfilled”.— epi.org/publications/entry/bp188/

If you are an Airline executive read this:

The Airline business has a broken model where they let a fascist government take over part of their operations (security) now they will pay the consequences. Take our family as reference; we are not going to accept radiation and nude picture taking of our members nor sick PAD-DOWNS. The current procedures targets disable persons for sexual harassment my wife has a titanium hip. So the whole family is not flying any more. Members of the family are now buying motor homes, new cars, etc. We are re-adjusting our recreation activities. Even if they fix this mess in the future, the monies for flying are not there anymore the money went into buying new cars (we just bought new car yesterday cash) and motor homes.

If you own airline stock sell them as soon as you can, there is no future in a business like that.

The airlines knew that the TSA was going to implement those machines and start humiliating your customers and you did nothing about it. Where your lobbyists in Washington are, fire them all, you needed someone at the helm of the TSA that understands the airline business. But you accepted the current administration of the TSA and you are now going to suffer the consequences.
Read this, not only you are humiliating your customers you may be killing them.:
Scientists with the University of California at San Francisco were so worried that they wrote a letter to the White House Office of Science and Technology in April, 2010 raising “a number of red flags” on the scanners’ safety.

How can the Democratic Party be so clueless? The Full scan body machines are new as well as the latest procedures designated to denigrate the voters. The voter will remember this and will never vote for the Democratic Party again. What are the Party members worry about? Some stupid position rather than stop the TSA and the molestation of the flying population. We had a great opportunity by having majority all over and we mess-up BIG TIME. Did I vote for the Democrats in this last election? NNNOOO!!!! Will I vote again for the Democratic? Only if the party comes back to its origins and stops the fascist association with big business.

Of course TSA does not care that we object due to moral and religious ground. NAZIs never cared. This is more than FASCISM it is Nazism/Satanic.

Well I have news for them GOD is watching and we are already starting to pray. Let me remind everybody several months ago there were 33 miners in a Chilean mine 700 meters (not feet but meters) a rescue like that was unique never done before. Well a lot of people in Chile and around the world started to pray and they came out all alive. The head of the operations André Sougarret was interviewed after the rescue and he did mentioned how the drilling equipment took and unexplainable turn that made it hit the mine tunnel right in the middle.

Evil forces always start making their move around special dates like Thanksgivings and Christmas. They are so predictable. They usually target old and disable people, women and children. I saw in the internet people in wheelchair getting pad-downed, I saw in the internet a lady with a prosthetic leg asking her to remove her leg. The scan machines are not suitable for disable people, they do not meet the standard (one more reason to make them illegal, I think they target disable people because they probably have a special place in havens and they are envious of them.

Where is the compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? None—totally violated!!!

The Chilean rescuers did not just pray they took action and work day and night until they got them all out, with a little help redirecting the drill; we need to do the same. We are lucky, my wife has a titanium hip she will be a perfect target and we will not travel to see our daughter and grandson, but they decided to drive down and stay with us for a week.

But if you read this comment and you see an old couple that will be lonely during thanksgivings invite them over that day, you can always add some extra plates at the family table.

God Bless us all during this attack to our values.

I know that there quite a few Indians in this world and most of ‘em can not be described as sharp-dressed. Does Deepak insist on the well groomed and professional appearance for his employees?

How did a young Nigerian Muslim without a passport “slip through” security at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport? Not only did his itinerary feature an illogical travel route, he paid cash for a high-priced last-minute ticket and boarded without checked baggage. How?
ICTS International, the security screening company at Schiphol, was founded by former members of Shin Bet, Israel’s civil security agency, and Israeli executives in charge of El Al security.
    Kurt Haskell speaking:
As many of you know, my wife Lori and I were passengers and innocent victims of Northwest Flight 253. We have repeated our story many times to various reporters, television and radio stations ,both across the country and abroad. Our story has never changed… Kurt and Lori Haskell.
Mr. Haskell questioned why officials have not released the Amsterdam airport security video that will undoubtedly reveal crucial information about the “sharp-dressed man” who escorted a disheveled Mutallab to the boarding area. Haskell described the suspected terrorist as appearing to be a “poor black teenager.”
The well-dressed INDIAN MAN did all the talking. He insisted Mutallab be boarded on the plane without a passport and when an airport employee refused to do so Mutallab and the Indian man went to talk with a supervisor. The Indian man tried to pass off Mutallab as a Sudanese refugee and have him boarded despite the fact doing so would be in violation of regulations concerning refugees. In general, documentation must be provided by an embassy in order for refugees to board international flights.
Mr. Haskell did not see Mutallab again until the botched terror bombing inside the plane on the approach to Detroit. He did not know how Mutallab finally boarded the aircraft.
The FBI was not pleased with Kurt Haskell when they conducted a follow-up interview earlier today in Michigan. They showed him close-up photographs of various people, including Mutallab. “They kind of tried to trick me,” Haskell explained. The agents tried to pass off two photos of Mutallab as different people. Kurt asked the agents if they were attempting to impeach his story and smear him.
The Indian man was not included in the photographs.
Haskell asked them why he was not shown a full body shot of the suspect. Haskell was eight rows back from the suspect. The FBI agents did not answer and were displeased with the question. He also asked the FBI agents if it would be more appropriate to bring the surveillance video from the Amsterdam airport instead of still photos. “I don’t think they liked that comment from me,” Haskell added. The FBI said they did not have the videotape.

I was speaking more to what we’ve become as a nation…a DIRECT democracy where 51% rule the other 49% with man-made, arbitrary laws. Call it what you want, but this was not the way it was supposed to be and perhaps it’s the very reason the word “democracy” appears nowhere in the constitution. In fact, it says a ‘republican’ form of government. The founders wrote extensively on the dangers of direct democracies. Wonder why? Tyranny is nothing new under the sun.

But why wouldn’t the President follow up on a business deal involving security scanners for our airports? Especially when it’s an opportunity for positive foreign diplomacy. I understand people are angry about the scanners but that alone doesn’t merit a claim of corruption.

Head businessman? You do realize he’s not the first President to lend his diplomacy for international trade deals?

My point is I think people are letting their anger about the TSA and body scanners bleed into a belief that buying the equipment from India is corrupt when it’s not.

Well considering I didn’t know you were arguing a ‘bigger picture’ by my perception you come off as someone who was misrepresenting a position. I don’t hold an anti-Obama position because I’m genuinely proud of what he’s done to stop the hemorrhaging of jobs that demonstrably is because of the Stimulus and his attempt at reforming health care. My only problem with him is that I feel he didn’t do enough.

  • Johnny Warbucks

The total transitional capability of the synchronized policy of contingency makes it rather awkward for the President to articulate a functional logistical concept that is convenient for all parties while the integrated incremental projection may phase-out.

    Don’t you agree?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EJCHJ2LWM3MGYUGHWB7ALWHE6M Kitty Antonik Wakfer

See the actual letter sent 4/6/2010 by 4 top faculty members of UCSF to Obama’s assistant “for Science and Technology” pointing out the lack of scientific data on the safety of these scanners – http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2010/11/what-scientists-really-think-about-new.html
No report of reply, if any, was received. Obviously the TSA is not required to have FDA approval for these, or at least at the level mandated for all sorts of other devices before being allowed to be sold. (And that doesn’t cover all the chemicals and devices the FDA will not allow residents to purchase for their own usage.)

This commingling of industry and government is nothing but favoritism on the back of taxpayers – and now may involve numerous other parts (including “private”) of an individual’s body too. All of this staged and heavily dramatized fear (theater of the absurd) is to keep the idea of government as a necessity prominent in the mind’s of the majority. What and when will the next “event” take place to quiet the furor against scanners and gropers?

Don’t even THINK about that unless you can propose a better candidate for that office. Because right now, the choice of candidates is: Scary Failin’; Mittens Romney; Haley “Bigot” Barbour; Newt “SlimyReptile” Gingrich; Tim “Duh” Pawlenty; Mike “DogTormentor” HucksterBee; RandomlyPickedFascistBigot. I don’t care how bad our current President is, he is NOWHERE as bad as any of these pigs. I don’t like having to choose the lesser of two evils any more than you do, but I can tell you now that four years of any of this slate of idiots, and this country will be a heap of smoldering ashes.

  • Anonymous

You appear to be suffering from a memory deficit. The TSA was created by the Bush Administration and supported by the Republicans, many of whom have financial interests in the scanner industry. IIRC, Michael Chertoff, former head of Homeland Security, was behind the deployment of these machines, because he stands to make huge profits thereby. Is each incoming Administration to cancel all contracts and plans made by the previous administration? That is common practice in many Third World countries. Should it be de rigeur for America too?

  • Anonymous

Exactly. GW Bush was EXACTLY the same as Bill Clinton, EXACTLY. That’s why, just like during the Clinton Administration, we all made lots of money, we got a peace dividend, things were … wait, what? They weren’t?

    Friends and fellow commenters,

I highly recommend that each and every one of you copy this letter, adjust it to reflect your own attitudes and circumstances, and send it via email and snailmail to each and every PR department of each and every airline, with a CC to the CEO. Also send a copy to your Congesscritters and to your local newspapers. If enough of us do it, even if we only represent 1 per cent of the flying public, we can stir the simmering discontent that the airlines’ and the TSA’s bad practices have caused. It’s time to put a stop to this. ACT!

TSA stands for Taxpaying Serf Attitude Adjustment.

Though that phrase is mine and I have been saying the purpose is to instill a culture of regimentation, since the screening, among other things, does not either image or probe internal body cavities where explosives could be hidden, and is hence either incompetent, or just for show, or to regiment us.

Evidence of the latter is that the screening did not begin last year after the Underwear Bomber. It started, as Rush Limbaugh observed, this year after the Tea Party electoral revolt.
