Deficit commission’s Simpson calls US seniors the ‘greediest generation’

Wyoming Republican Alan Simpson has a pretty low opinion of the people that have paid into Social Security all their lives and now need something back.

The co-chair of President Barack Obama’s bipartisan deficit commission lashed out at seniors Wednesday because they are unhappy with his ideas for reducing the deficit by cutting Social Security benefits while reducing corporate taxes.

“I’ve never had any nastier mail or [been in a] more difficult position in my life,” Simpson told Jeremy Pelzer at the Casper Star-Tribune. “Just vicious. People I’ve known, relatives [saying], ‘You son of a bitch. How could you do this?’”

The draft report released by Simpson along with co-Chair Erskine Bowles proposed raising the retirement age to 69 by 2070. Additionally, 90 percent of Social Security income would be taxable, as opposed to 82.5 percent as is currently projected.

Critics of the proposal have dubbed the group the “catfood commission” because seniors who see their benefits cut would have to reduce their expenses or find additional sources of income.

“We had the greatest generation,” Simpson said. “I think this is the greediest generation.”

Referring to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow as “that,” the commission co-chair blamed political polarization for the attacks on him.

“You don’t want to listen to the right and the left — the extremes,” he said. “You don’t want to listen to Keith Olbermann and Rush Babe [Limbaugh] and Rachel Minnow [sic] or whatever that is, and Glenn Beck. They’re entertainers. They couldn’t govern their way out of a paper sack — from the right or the left. But they get paid a lot of money from you and advertisers — thirty, fifty million a year — to work you over and get you juiced up with emotion, fear, guilt, and racism. Emotion, fear, guilt, and racism.”

One contributor to the liberal website Daily Kos believes that Simpson “doesn’t apparently understand the program that it has been his life’s mission to destroy.”

“[H]is perspective indicates something even more vile: a belief that people’s sole source of income, their very livelyhood, is some sort of mass generosity. It isn’t,” wrote brooklynbadboy. “Instead of working all your life and then spending your elder years destitute, why not take care of the old people now and then when you get old, you’ll get yours. It’s a deal, not a handout.”

I don’t see how you can reach consensus with someone like this. There is no middle ground between people who think Social Security is a government handout and reality. To malign people who have worked their entire lives and kept their end of the bargain, he says to them, essentially “you’re beat.” You cant negotiate with a guy like that. He doesn’t believe in keeping his end of the deal. In fact, there is a word for people who take money and then don’t hold up their end of a bargain: a thief. I say it is that person who is truly greedy.

It’s not the first time Simpson’s comments about Social Security have raised eyebrows. In an August email, he described the program as a “milk cow with 310 million tits!”

Simpson told Ashley Carson, executive director of the Older Women’s League, that those who oppose cuts to Social Security are “Gray Panthers” and “Pink Panthers.”

After his remarks, The New York Times‘ Paul Krugman called on the president to remove Simpson from the deficit commission.

“At this point, though, Obama is on the spot: he has to fire Simpson, or turn the whole thing into a combination of farce and tragedy — the farce being the nature of the co-chair, the tragedy being that Democrats are so afraid of Republicans that nothing, absolutely nothing, will get them sanctioned,” wrote Krugman.

But White House press secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed to reporters that Simpson wouldn’t lose his job. “We regret that he sent that e-mail,” Gibbs said. We don’t condone those comments. But Senator Simpson has and will continue to serve on the commission.”

Simpson later released an email to Carson apologizing. “I can see that my remarks have caused you anguish, and that was not my intention.”

Simpson’s remarks to the Star-Tribune were first noticed by Talking Points Memo.

Once again, Krugman is correct. Obama doesn’t fire Simpson because Obama is in league with Simpson. Obama takes tolerance to a new level. He apparently thinks it’s okay for the GOP to hold a gun to his head. He knows that the GOP will “never” pull the trigger because he essentially agrees with them. For Obama, it’s all theater, even though it’s far from theater for the millions of people who will end up on the short end of the stick when SS and Medicare/Medicaid funds are slashed, when seniors and the disabled will be shopping once again for… pet food.

I’d venture to say that the complaining seniors are ones who are totally or near totally dependent on Social Security and who believe these cuts would take place immediately.

So, instead of clarifying, this is being exploited for its use as generational division. Talk about

“…cutting Social Security benefits while reducing corporate taxes.”

And the idiot hasn’t got a clue why anyone would be upset. The Corporations had the wonderful Bush Jr tax cut under the bullshit that it would create jobs. Corportations made big bucks but no jobs were created, none, not a single job. The Con job is the only job Bush Jr ever did on the people.

Every American can see the money being taken out of their paycheck for Social Security, It’s right there in their face and yet this doesn’t stop the Republicans from lying over and over again calling Social Securtiy an entitlement. Word games is all the Republicans have to offer.

The Republicans borrowed the money from the children to pay for tax cuts and no jobs for these children in the future, Republicans borrowed the money from Social Secruity in the form of I.O.U’s to pay for the Corporate tax cuts it’s time we tax the hell out of the Corporations to pay back those I.O.U’s.

In England they are forcing austerity policies onto the people and person simialr to Simpson made this comment about the austerity policies, “It will do the little people some good”. He has since stepped down for making that remark. But not Simpson.

The People need to wake up and realize the Republicans is not about team work in this nation. The Republicans have only the middle finger for the nation. They are professional whores working only for the Corporations.

Corporations is not a team player in our nation. Corporation is not a team player following the rules of “We the People”. The Corporation and the Republican party has alienated the People of the United States, Under Republican rule the People have no power.

You want power, then vote out all Republicans and you will have a better shot at power

I think Simpson should stop milking the tax payers and give up his rediculous salary (paid by us) and medical coverage or he is just as greedy as the horrible seniors who worked all their lives and paid into Social Security. In fact, if he is so certain that large, high profit corporations still need tax breaks, he should donate his salary and the cost of his medical coverage to them.

  • Anonymous

And what does he care?He is on a permanent Government Entitlement & Cadillac health care program. The son of a B!tch.

  • Anonymous

well if lawmakers like him would stop writing laws for corporations to constanly chop thier wages, benefits and retirment maybe they wouldnt be so depenedent on SS. also they could save alot of money if the health insurance and medical industry wasnt A CRIMiNAL MONOPOLY THAT SUCKS ALL THIER MONEY.! and oh yeah you idiot it is thier money! you goverment morans keep stealing it to pay for your mistakes!

The powers in service to corporate interest are drooling at the prospect of doing in social security. If they had privatised it, and used it as investment, they could have absconded with the cash and claimed it a victim of the mystery of the market place. Failing that strategy, they now create an economic crisis and use that as an excuse to cut social security, breaking what is left of a social contract.

Tax the corporate interests, establish some fair distribution of wealth reflective of the percentage of the population contained in the various classes, and concentrate on the creation of jobs and improvement of healthcare, infrastructure and education, and the country will prosper. Continuation along the path set for us through orchestrated economic crises will only see a small percent of the people reap the benefits from the work of all over the centuries. Resist the solution being thrust upon us by Simpson and insist on those who have profited from the disaster to face up to their civil responsibilities.

If we don’t bring back a more just progressive tax which can more fairly redistribute the money, more crisis will follow, each of which will justify relieving us of services in the cause of satisfying a harsh economic necessity; an economic necessity which was created by those with power for that very purpose.

Simpson is now and has always been a BASTARD. Sorry, Mr Simpson, but making a deal with people and when you have to pay off, you change the rules is ILLEGAL. You should be seriously ashamed of your sorry ass. You goddamned maggot, these people have paid into this fund for DECADES on YOUR PROMISE that you would have the honor to pay them back. What the fuck is it about THEFT that you don’t understand? You fucking bastard! You’ve got yours so fuck everyone else?

So how about eliminating pensions for Congress – retroactively. Let Simpson repay his ill-gotten gains since leaving office, and charge him for any health care benefits he’s received as well.

We’ve been far too generous to these part time government employees. Is it any wonder, with their perks and benefits, that they now consider themselves the privileged class and identify with with their “peers” in business?

Let’s not forget that it was Obama who named this bad tempered curmudgeon as a co-chair of the committee, and support a progressive challenge to his reelection. If enough Democrats oppose his renomination he might get out with only one failed term. Stand up and speak out!

  • kiboshki

Sounds like Simpson actually has no idea how Social Security works. Or, more accurately, he thinks it’s supposed to operate like a Wall Street casino, rather than a stable pension. He is a shining example of the arrogance of Big Biz and corporate whoredom.

However, having said that, I also note that a huge fraction of the currently retiring generation are the very ones who ushered in today’s plague of conservatism. They voted Reagan in and bought into Newt’s “Contract on America”; failed to contain military spending after the ‘defeat’ of the Soviets; idolized the Wall Street bankster & executive class; shamelessly promoted boom-bust economics which resulted our obscene wealth gap; deregulated everything in sight; and turned money-worship into a full-blown religion. They’re also the very ones who repeatedly voted the pro-biz/anti-human Simpson into the US Senate all throughout the 80′s and 90′s.

I hate to be so cynical, but many of today’s seniors are simply reaping what they (or their misguided conservative neighbors) sown. Unfortunately, in doing so, they’ve utterly destroyed my and my family’s economic future as well.

How about some facts. It has gotten better now but people who retired in the mid 1980′s and had paid into SS all of their lives withdrew all of their contributions with 8% interest in the first 3 yrs of retirement. The amount taken out of their checks was very small because their life expectancy was less than 65 years. Now more is being taken out but evidently not enough to cover our retirement and the these existing retirees. We must recognize that any money we receive above what we put in (with a reasonable amount of interest) is in fact a form of welfare.

I’m not sayng that we should cut it. Let’s face it no one can afford long term elderly care. There are plenty of other things that could be cut to be able to subsidize welfare benefits for seniors. (Like maybe welfare benefits for lazy, able-bodied crack heads). But we either have to cut benefits, raise revenue or cut something else.

How to make a manure tea bagger:

    1. Fill a metal bucket one-third full of well-cured manure (you can find these in the senate).
    2. Add water to fill the bucket to the top of his head.

    3. Let him steep for three to four days.
    4. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or other porous fabric into another container.
Add any remaining solids to the garden or toss them into the compost bin.
    5. Dilute the remaining liquid with water so it’s the color of weak tea.
    6. Apply manure tea according to each plant’s requirements (check seed packets and gardening books for details). For best results, work early in the morning or on cloudy days.

Let’s play a game called Find the Right-Wing Circular ‘Logic’ :

One of the criticisms of Social Security has long been “I should have been able to invest it myself; I’ll never get out of SS what I paid into it.” So now Simpson wants to give us back even LESS of our own money, thereby creating a self-fulfilling prophesy?

That’s the way it always works with them. Like calling Obama a Socialist while ten minutes later saying he’s too cozy with Wall Street. Or saying “Government is Broken!” after they’ve just finished breaking it, and have plans to break it more.

    God, they’re idiots.

I’ve noticed some posts here attacking Senior Citizens.

Rachael Maddow has done an excellent story on this. The Republicans talk two different worlds, one local, the other national. In the local level they will say one thing at the national level they will say the opposite. Maddow pointed this out and I have seen it myself watching the Representatives from my state.

The local papers do not point out the above fact. I know this from watching my own local papers and news. We have a politician who says the opposite, note: yes he is a Republican.

Now imagine if you are old and you still read the papers because it is one of the best resources of local news, crime in your neighborhood, the policies of your community, mayor, city council, and look here on page 7 the Senator says the stimulus is working, creating jobs and he is taking credit for it, and he will fight for Senior Citzens and their benefits, and so on. The Seniors are happy with what they read, They don’t need to pay attention to anything else, it’s all there in the paper.

Election time comes. The opposition points out the contradictions of the Republican candidate, But the Republican candidate will retaliate saying it’s all lies, you can read where I stands in the papers. The Republican gets elected and boom there goes the middle finger to all the people he claims he is representing. The Republican is sucking a lobbyist cock in the back room. The people are screwed.

The above has worked for politicans for decades. If you know how to watch, you will see it yourself. The easiest party to catch contradicting themselves is Republicans.

I sure as hell didn’t vote for this scum!! I’ve worked since I was 14 years old and due to a totally crappy economy many times over, have had my savings swiped by wall st. The only thing I have left to live on is SS. Not the original plan, but that’s they way it is. Until the plutocracy is finished sucking the last blood out of the last near breathing body, they won’t be happy. Alan Simpson was always a nasty little man, and yes, he hails from Wyoming, an over-represented state ( total population about 350k) with huge mineral and oil/gas reserves. You should see the way they treat the native americans on the reservations there…training for what they plan for everyone else. I digress…there have been NO decent political representatives coming out of this state. Every where else in the country it’s 2010, in Wyoming it’s somewhere around 1920. I kid you not. Lived there, seen it, hated every stinking cold minute.

The US population was 125 million during the baby boom. Is now over 300 million and by 2040 when social security begins to run dry the US population is expected to be 400 million. The VAST majority of the baby boomers will be dead. The “bulge” will have passed thru the hose and Social Security will be solvent again. What’s the problem?

Presently the Social Security system has a 2.5 Trillion dollar surplus!!! This is the only system in the US government that is actually working.

The problem is the taxes for the wealthiest people have no way to pay for itself. So they have to find a way and what better way than the rob from Social Security.

Think about it. Borrow whatever you need from the most successful program to pay for those tax cuts for the wealthy. The reason they have a date of 2070 is because it’s far enough down the road where the Republicans today won’t be around when the shit hits the fan. That shit will be there is no money to pay back the I.O.U’s the Republicans stuffed in the Social Security box.

If the Dems thought that the 2010 elections were an expression of bitterness and anger, they haven’t seen anything yet. Wait until the Dems get cowered into giving Wall St. access to the Social Security fund. Wait until they cut more hundreds of thousands off unemployment insurance. Wait until the hidden housing bubble bursts again and the B of A crumbles. Wait until Medicaid gets slashed and the ERs get slammed into gridlock.

The economic elites and the GOP, as well as the cowered Dems, have no vision, no foresight, not one consideration of the long term consequences of their economic and political decisions, unintended as they might be. None. They should be wondering what a social and political upheaval will look like when the homeless increase by the tens of millions and the soup lines run out of soup. That’s all on the horizon. But for Wall St. and corporate America, it’s boom time. It doesn’t matter to any of them.

As a senior who has worked my entire life since the age of 13, spent four years serving our country and was injured as thanks, I paid for my parents Social Security which was what they depended on in their last years as well as my my own Social Security since Reagan doubled the FICA in the 1980′s. Mr Simpson, whose position in the United States Senate undoubtedly made him a millionaire has no retirement woes. What a dufas. If President Obama doesn’t fire Mr. Simpson for the disrespect he has shown seniors and all people who have faithfully paid into the Social Security System their entire lives then President Obama does not deserve our respect either. By the way, are we not sure that Mr. Simpson’s first name is not really Homer? Doe!

Let’s also consider that in the 1980′s Reagan doubled the tax to pay not only for our parents but for ourselves. Let’s also consider how many good paying jobs have been sent overseas or people replaced by robotics. The tax revenue from all these jobs has vanished as well. The rich get rid of our jobs and then complain about senios living on money beyond their contributions. That’s BS.

It’s all the same. Pay in now and get it later, or don’t pay in now have it later. The fear must come in to play for those who cant discipline themselves to do the latter. Once again, Obama has proven to be a pushover by not firing Simpson, the most vile Republican creature on the planet. His inflammatory tongue is the scourge of the American public. He never speaks about the greediness of corporations, but he’s all so willing to cut senior citizens Social Security. Regardless of which political party seniors endorse, across the board, they don’t want the Deficit Commission to mess with Social Security. It’s time to cut Defense spending. We don’t need to be in Iraq or Afghanistan tossing billions of dollars into these sinkholes. Obama really needs to fire this turkey.

Still, he is adamant about defending the rich & their “right” not to pay more taxes because that would be “discrimination” and “inequality”

    Oh, hold me back!

First of all to believe that somehow as a conclusion to this commission that seniors today wouldnt receive their kickback is inane and most likely conjured up through the fearmongering of broadcast tv. This is something that would undoubtedly be phased in. And to your first comment- government liabilities and transfers DO count towards the federal deficit, just not the number everyone is accustomed to which is merely the costs of running government excluding long term liabilities and transfer payments. Social security bring the total deficit up to 2-3 times the generally accepted number. Nobody is going to take ur eldery welfare check relax.

DON’T contribute to either major party and don’t vote in 2010. To vote is an exercise in futility. Anything that has become a life line for the ordinary American (S.S. and Medicare) is under attack. Both Obama and the bipartisan congress are willing to let the ordinary American suffer while the wealthy elite are rewarded.
The real gangsters responsible for the bankruptcy of the U.S. are not being prosecuted and jailed. Their bonuses will be outstanding this year.

Congress, Obama and the corporate oligarchy want surplus funds from the cutting of Social Security and Medicare to be available for QE3 and the Wall Street Banksters ongoing rescue. Any surplus money will not be used to reduce the deficit but will be given to the banksters through the Fed.

I agree! If the S.S. fund wasn’t constantly being robbed by our corrupt bipartisan congress (and placed into the general budget) the surplus would be even larger.
    A must read essay: http://www.philstockworld.com/2010/07/17/its-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it/

In the essay you will become informed of how Alan Greenspan and Ronald Reagan were able to increase and take Social Security surplus money. Its covered in the section quoting Allen Smith.
So, when Republicans and Blue Dog Demowimps become upset about the Social Security fund just remind them of how Alan Greenspan, Ronald Reagan and the corrupt bipartisan congress have robbed the fund in the 1980′s.

Alan Simpson must go. With his mindset, he cannot be objective and must not be kept on the commission. Hope that he or any of his family receives social security. Now that the IOU’s are due, the lenders are greedy SOB’s for expecting the money be repaid. The ungrateful wretches should be taken out and terminated! Oh wait, Obamacare will do that. Never mind.

And what a good little republican soldier simpson is! He has no empathy or foresight. Not giving a second thought about the sacrificing Seniors would be making…….and not caring when it is brought to his attention. I’m sure the white house forced him to at least pretend to care and understand. Why doesn’t he recommend raising taxes for the poor while he is at it? Because as a republican he would never think of sunsetting bush’s tax cuts for the rich or cutting the defense spending or completely end the wars and not get our military in any more wars unnecessarily! God forbid the repubs would do whats right, fair and the richs patriotic duty!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IQ7KSF2IVQ5XDKZ4KQE2S7N7ZY Olin

No surprise here. It’s been the goal of the Republican Party to tear down SS and Medicare since the day they were created. Pensions, be they government or private, amount to a contract with beneficiaries, and in the main, republicans are not much in favor of contracts that don’t benefit them, as in large corporations being allowed to simply vacate pension plans during the Reagan Administration. It’s obvious that Simpson is no more interested in true bipartisanism than, oh say, Mitch McConnel… even while he whines about the polarization of this nation.

As for seniors “greedily” expecting a payout from SS, into which they paid their entire working lives, THAT also is a contract. It’s not at all unreasonable to expect either an insurance policy or public policy to live up to its promises.

People pay into social security their entire lives and you call that welfare and/or a “kickback?” Obviously you know nothing about welfare or social security, or probably much of anything else–you’re just spewing on behalf of your masters. And social security brings the total federal deficit up 2 to 3 times? Provide a credible source that supports that assertion or STFU. SIMPSON AND BOWLES THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO MAKE A SPLASH WITH THEIR REPORT, until they read comments from Americans across the country saying NO to social security cuts when there’s no plan to cut RAMPANT wastefulness and obsolete departments and functions across the entire government. The fact that Simpson is complaining about spending $25K of his own money is SAD, especially when he and his comrades in the Senate got wealthy on making deals with lobbyists which are NOT in the interest of the people. Mr. Simpson, just ask Obama and Bernanke to reimburse you — they’ve forked over money to every other elite on the face of the earth….by robbing “the little people”.

Since the entire deficit is owed to the Federal Reserve, a PRIVATE bank owned by 13 elite mostly European families and the Rockefellers, and it was generated unconstitutionally by allowing the FED to print money rather than Treasury, the entire deficit should be WRITTEN OFF as a FRAUD against the people.

That said, Congress NEEDS to CUT SPENDING DRASTICALLY. The tea partiers should be the people on this “commission”. Bowles and Simpson are so old and with the “in-crowd” that they are “out of touch”. If I hear one more politician say they want to cut Social Security (a small monthly stipend for the seniors who paid into it all their lives), instead of the VAST WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES that never go away regardless of being obsolete, I will scream.

Some things that could be slashed with no adverse effect on Americans:
    (1) Dept of Education (worked better at the State and County level – grades continue to deteriorate)

    (2) Homeland Security (REFUSES to do its job of securing the border or deporting illegals. Instead, spends taxpayers money suing AZ, harassing airline passengers, and sending notices to nationwide police departments that returning Vets, tea partiers, patriots, and those with anti-Obama stickers on their cars are TERRORISTS. Allows their agents to insist an airline put a panty-bomber on their airplane with no ID (Christmas bomber). FOSTERED BP poisoning of the Gulf and allowed the Coast Guard, now under their supervision, to cover up OIL, TOXIC OCEAN, TOXIC SEAFOOD, TOXIC AIR, CONTINUED COREXIT SPRAYING, and PEOPLE DYING. Napolitano should have been fired YEARS AGO!

    (3) The FBI and DOJ REFUSE to do their jobs of prosecuting Wall Street and big banks or investigate ForeclosureGate or Fannie/Freddie. The FBI covered up the Turkish Council and Israeli lesbian blackmail of Rep Jan Schakowsky that Sibel Edmonds testified about on Aug 8, 2009, and Schakowsky is STILL Chair of the House “Intelligence” Committee. The DOJ is just plain incompetent and fails to do its job altogether, despite Judicial Watch proof of coverup on the Black Panthers crime.
DOJ spends taxpayer dollars suing AZ against Americans’ wishes.

    (4) Dept of Energy, which despite an oil crisis in 1972 has FAILED MISERABLY in turning the nation into an energy-efficient one in regard to housing and transportation. 100 years of future technology and medical cures for cancer THAT TAXPAYERS PAID FOR was handed over to military-industrial corporations who REFUSE TO GIVE THAT TECHNOLOGY TO THE PUBLIC. With the super-fast advancement of electronics, we should be driving spaceships by now, rather than the same oil-based cars at 25 mpg we were driving in the 50’s. Even electric cars (Volt) are old technology! Where are the air cars from Australia?

    (5) The wars should be ended and the Pentagon blasted for its use of hundreds of thousands of mercenaries like Halliburton, KBR, XE, etc. and for buying brand new trucks when a tire blows rather than stocking TIRES, and for their Israeli Pentagon comptroller losing over $4 trillion just prior to 911 (no investigation, no prosecution – definitely a coverup. The comptroller’s company manufactured remote control systems for planes), and for “losing” another $8 billion last year, and for “losing” planeloads of cash sent to Iraq, and for their ABJECT FAILURE (along with the Red Cross and Clinton/Bush fundraising — where did THAT money go?) to help Haiti in any way, shape or form. THE PENTAGON’S BUDGET SHOULD BE CUT FOR ALL THESE LOSSES IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR’S BUDGET. The Pentagon’s ever-expanding military bases, like the new one they’re planning in Columbia, should be SHUT DOWN and all those soldiers brought home to defend our own nation. Cutting over 800 bases across the globe should save PLENTY. Add all those foreign jobs, vehicles, and equipment we’re paying for at these bases.

    (6) The State Dept under Hillary should STOP building billion-dollar embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and London. Who will use these embassies in the desert and in war zones? Staffs of
over 2000 and security personnel of 500 for each embassy, vehicles, office supplies, gasoline, and equipment would rack up huge savings.

    (7) The Czars and their staffs should be cut. Michelle’s 27 aids should be cut. There should be a BUDGET LIMIT for presidential foreign trips.

    (8) Nancy Pelosi should NOT be given an airplane. All members of congress should fly commercial, and so should the presidential staff.

    (9) $385 billion in social services handouts to illegals PER YEAR…food stamps, SSI (social security they DIDN’T pay into), HUD housing where Obama’s illegal aunt lived, free hospitalization, medicaid, free college education under DREAM Act, free public schools, prison for 30% illegal inmates, FREE LEGAL DEFENSE, building more schools, more prisons, hiring more teachers, more policemen, more court personnel, while they commit murders and rapes of children, form criminal gangs with impunity, drive drunk killing Americans. FORGET the Dream Act! Pass “birthright” bill.

    (10) Cut Israeli foreign aid completely (this is directed to Cantor). Americans are tired of paying for the war-mongering and threats.

    (11) Combine all the competing Intelligence agencies, and cut personnel.

    (12) Abolish the CIA for its 60 years of drug-running, gun-running, money-laundering, and murders of Americans and foreigners alike, to include popularly elected leaders. That agency does NOT represent the values of the people of this nation.

THESE ARE JUST A “FEW” SUGGESTIONS, BUT THERE ARE THOUSANDS MORE….AND THE PEOPLE WANT SOMETHING DONE ABOUT ALL THESE ATROCITIES, rather than cutting old people’s social security. WE’RE VERY ANGRY REGARDING SIMPSON’S AND BOWLES’ CAN ONLY THINK OF SOCIAL SECURITY TO CUT.

All of your comments make sense and would be the way by which a Government For the People and By the People would resolve what has taken place. It’s just too bad that the warning that Eisenhower made to us in the 50′s could not have been better responded to by the Citizens. Eisenhower had a heart attack which ended that message and unfortunately ended the possibility of the opportunities that we once had. Excellent points. The linked article can give anyone in America an opportunity to join in force and start to make changes to our plight. Do not shop at Primary retailers like Walmart and Target. Do not buy new products made outside the USA. If you just must have a foriegn made product find it through a secondary retailer like Marshalls or T.J Max. We are not going to be able to make changes by way of the ballot box or in the streets. It is our buying habits that can bring about change. A week of empty Walmart parking lots will be a message sent to corporation that will be discussed in the Board Room.

The only thing that I am sure of is that China is no more a friend of the Corporations than The USA is. They are concerned with what sells and what doesn’t. They will jump to move back production in the US if Americans will demand it by not purchasing off-shore products

It’s also obvious that they aren’t interested in the deficit , Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit , it is a totally separate self funding program . If they really wanted to fix it lift the cap , problem solved , you notice they didn’t even mention that . If these slime bags were really interested in the deficit they would seriously go after the military , advise getting out of these useless wars and bring the top tax rates back to pre Regan levels , around 70 or 80% . That has been proven to work , austerity never works in a recession , it kills demand by killing buying power . You can only grow your way out , the public has to have money to spend to stimulate business activity . They also didn’t mention closing tax breaks that make it more profitable to ship jobs overseas or penalizing company’s that do , and how about changing our stupid and counterproductive trade policies . Maybe putting bankers in jail that steal us blind wouldn’t be a bad idea either and perhaps confiscating their stolen assets .

It’s not a Ponzi scheme . A ponzi scheme keeps skimming money out so there’s no money to pay back investors who were promised huge paybacks in the form of unrealistic rates of return . Madoff ran a Ponzi scheme . Social Security is a trust or insurance program . One generation of workers is paying in to pay benefits for the previous generation of workers so on and so forth . It does require occasional tweaking but works like any other insurance program minus the profit motive ( because it’s government run ) . You have a common misunderstanding of how the program works usually brought on by to much uncritical listening to right wing prevaricators . There is a cure for this , first turn off Fox News , Limbaugh , Beck or whoever and actually research the subject . It may be painful at first because you’ll be doing something your not used to , it’s called thinking . The Social Security program has worked perfectly for almost seventy years , has never missed a payment and is the reason the elderly are no longer the largest poverty group as they were before the programs inception .

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

I’d be willing to gripe about the greed and selfishness of older Americans…because many of them vote conservative and have no gratitude for the advantages that liberal policies gave them…advantages they have voted out of the hands of the rest of us. They got their slice of the pie…then threw the rest away before we got to the table. So am I bitter…yes…

…but that doesn’t change the fact that Simpson is an elitist asshat with no respect for the social contract that pays his wages along with those Social Security checks. It comes out of our pockets…and it cuts deep for us…but its supposed to pay off later. Losing another five or ten percent of a hundred million dollars isn’t a great burden…but losing an extra five or ten percent of 25,000 dollars is a mutherf*cking bitch! We accept that loss because the benefits come later…and we’re the ones who need them. The cow with 310 million tits is a backwards equation…if Simpson had his way that milk would never reach the 310 million people he’s spent his life sponging off of. To hell with him!

Despite what you claim, Social Security is fully funded through at least 2037; there is no need for the government for borrow anything for Social Security and it adds nothing to debt. Read: http://www.cbo.gov/doc.cfm?index=11943 and look at the facts of what has/is creating the deficit.

If we are really serious about the deficit/debt than let’s get rid of the Bush tax cuts and instantly a large percentage of the deficit is gone. Go back to the tax rates of the Eisenhower or Kennedy Presidencies and we can rid of our debt and recreate the dynamic U.S. middle class, restore the American dream, and re-energize our county.

The Social Security “debate” is a straw man and serves only as a distraction to the real problems. It’s really too bad that some of us refuse tot see that the “elderly welfare check” was earned by U.S. Citizens with hard work creating a better U.S.unlike the self-serving Wall Street financial manipulations that serve only to impoverish our country, our states, our cities, our homes and ourselves.

He eligible for Social Security, he can collects his FERS, he is eligible for Medicare and he calls our American seniors greedy for wanting to get back what they’ve been paying into for decades?
He’s teaches from time to time at University of Wyoming at Laramie, so he’s certainly not hurting for income.

    Dear Mr Simpson,
Until you and your Republican cohorts tanked the economy, I had been gainfully employed producing measurable product in this nation for 35 years. I paid for Social Security under a contract with the US government. I did not make a living pushing little green pieces of paper around playing hide the losses, nor did I make a living off the taxpayer teats as you did. But now you want to change the rules on Social Security because of a political game.
I rebuke you, Mr Simpson, and suggest that if you were anything approaching a decent human being, you would hang your head in shame. To attack the most helpless element of our society in this manner just to show your political stroke is simply reprehensible.

Why does everyone try to put this into the Republican/Democrat box? It has nothing to do with party. The Democrats under Clinton started TAXING Social Security. That was the biggest steal there is. Taxing a tax! Neither party created this problem, the banksters and the Federal Reserve did. Our economy is being destroyed because of corporate welfare and the banksters making money out of thin air and then keeping it for themselves. You can’t pay down the deficit by increasing taxes when we are all taxed to death for what? To support the military industrial complex and their wars and waste? To subsidize evil like Monsanto and the pharm and insurance industries. Why don’t we quit attacking the little guy and attack the real problem? As long as this provokes us to turn on each other, nothing will ever change. Look at the real enemy and he is wearing blue and red.

As long as the wealthy continue to use their power and wealth to enhance their own wealth and power and dominate the media megaphone, things will only get worse for the majority, who will descend further and further in serfdom. A system that cedes control of its wealth to either the poor or the wealthy is bound to fail. Any one who believes they are self sufficient is either deluded or narcissistic. No one is an impregnable island unto themselves. We all need each other. Our children and grandchildren will curse us for letting the dream of liberty and justice for all slip into the dustbin of history. We need to renew the virtues of honesty, patience, courtesy, earned respect and sharing of the bounties from the common weal. Websters unabridged and ad hominem attacks will not do the job. Only reasoned discourse and shared sacrifice will work.

Simpson is just another Rethugli-CON, who can’t stand seeing money paid into Social Security by the working people of this country, and it was the bumbling Repulsive-cons who created the necessity of the Democrats to instill the “COLA” in order to maintain the inflation rate which averaged 15% since the 70s or we who became eligible wouldn’t HAVE TO DUMPSTER DIVE FOR OUR EVENING MEALS!! We can thank the gop’s worshiped “Emperor” Ronald Reagan to melt the “Carte Blanche” Deficit Card to the tune if about 4.5 Trillion Dollars and counting “Bushit-E Ranch, Inc. Charging up the Deficit to another 7.5 trillion with 2 wars on emergency funds and it WAS NOT THE DEMOCRATS DOING “ALL” THETAXING AND SPENDING. IT’S THE RETHUGICONS STUPID!! The right wing is attempting to reframe social and economic issues as moral issues. If you are poor and out of work it is because you are sinful, workshy, and uncooperative with authority. Now, if you are expecting the government to fulfil its contract of social security, well, you’re just greedy. Not of course the generation responsible for the deficits and deregulation in service to greed and power, or the one responsible for guiding the puppet prince into wars for oil interests, or the one that utilised assassinations of elected officials in foreign countries because their policies conflicted with the interest of IT&T or some other corporate interest. No, that was the greatest generation.

Money and wealth are social constructs, they are available to collective restructuring, if we see the need and have the will. The present situation is a conflict between different parties in contract relations with the government. Either they can negate the contract with the wealthy and say that they will not short change the citizens to further the personal and corporate accumulation of power, or, they can turn to the citizens and call us greedy and therefore undeserving of social security. It is a matter of which contract they will honour. Quiet clear that they intend to continue their service to wealth at the expense of the nation. Anyone who protests such betrayal will be vilified as “greedy”, “socialist”, or, more popular with the Tories and certain right wing elements of the Catholic church, “sinful and uncooperative with authority”.

Oh, so according to your logic(?), people paying into social security for their entire working lives was never meant to be paid out to them upon retirement? Then exactly why do you think those social security taxes are deducted from everyone’s paycheck if not for their retirement?

The social security payments were never meant to be a person’s “sole” source of retirement funds; but rather, as a supplement to other retirement savings. So no matter what you erroneously believe, the purpose for paying into social security through our paychecks for the entire time we work IS for our retirement. (In that sense, it is a ‘safety net’ so that no matter what, upon retirement you’ll have some kind of income and not be completely destitute. Life has a way of throwing curve balls when you least expect it such as what happened to all of the people that lost their life savings during the economic collapse through no fault of their own). And social security is not a handout or a kickback; it’s more like a savings account.

Social security has been set up as a trust fund and when you reach retirement age, as long as you paid into it you’ll receive your fair portion regardless of how much other ‘wealth’ you’ve managed to accumulate during your lifetime. It’s your money–you’ve earned it.

All true, but in a willfully ignorant sense of the truth. Bottom line
either we pay in or don’t. In either case nobody is even remotely

Simpson is a ghoul. Social Security has never run a deficit. Simpson’s Republican buddies have borrowed money paid in the name of social security to fight ridiculous wars, and give tax breaks to their wealthy benefactors.

And of course, no one breaks a piggy bank or cashes in a government bond to pay social security. A computer is programmed each time a new recipient joins, and the money shows up each month in the person’s checking acount. Our government simply creates the money, and until those recipients start spending in an inflationary manner, what is the harm? Paying a debt in your own currency, to your own people is not difficult. How hard would it be to pay your debts if you could print money?

I am about as tired of Teaparty crap such as cutting the Department of Education as I am of Simpson and his conservative crap. They don’t call you all Teaparty Republicans for nothing you all stand for the same neoliberal principles and none of you have a bit of sense or any ideas that make sense because you don’t have enough facts to make sense. All you have are a conglomeration of possibilities based on what you believe would be good ideas resulting from what you have heard from some talker on radio or television.

Most of your suggestions actually seem based on propaganda you heard on Fox News in the last three years.

None of what you hear there is news, it is entertainment. Fox went to court to get permission to lie to you on those terms, they argue that what they provide is not news it is entertainment and so they should not have to tell the truth. The judge watched about an hour of Fox News and agreed! So they don’t even have any pretense for saying what they offer is news.

Spend some real time educating yourself, read some real books and stop listening to propaganda that is no way to learn anything.

  • FellOnEarth

Well here’s my two cents on the matter… The wealthiest and highest earning citizens are now entering or are soon to retire. They are also going to be the ones who’s entitlements will require a significant subsidizing from younger workers paychecks. The real problem here isn’t so much the entitlement programs expense, but the disparity between the pay among younger workers and the comparative wealth of the newly and soon to be retired. By comparison, the older generations earned higher incomes and enjoyed a higher quality of life (continuing into their retirement) than their younger compatriots who are currently working. While it is normal for people to earn a greater income as they reach senior level positions and from matured salaries, there has been a notable gap in the earnings of younger workers which haven’t kept pace with inflation or cost of living increases. Furthermore, younger people have taken on too much debt earlier in life which will make it nearly impossible for them to save or invest in retirement strategies that would otherwise supplement a wealthier (and healthier) lifestyle. Such a gap in wealth will also mean that not only will younger people not receive such generous benefits as their elders, but that there has been a notable decline in revenue entering the social security fund at a time when disbursements are going to quickly rise as ‘boomers continue to retire.

I don’t actually have anything against seniors or social security, I believe that it should be kept solvent to help prevent those who need it the most from suffering a life of abject poverty in their golden years. However, it is those who have managed to amass a significant estate of wealth that have less need that those who have been less fortunate. The problem lies with gradual changes in past up to current economic policies and business practices. Businesses have moved away from rewarding variable capital (labor) towards maximizing profits and attracting investment in fixed capitol or are saving instead. Many have also placed their capital in foreign markets where cheaper labor is available. For years now, many businesses have been placing artificial demand for increased productivity among an underpaid and over tasked workforce that just isn’t seeing as much benefit for their efforts.

I think it’s pretty clear what needs to happen to reverse such trends, but seeing as the future generations are already going to be saddled with paying of today’s debt while seeing less of a return on services provided for their efforts, I honestly don’t know how much good it will do. One way or another, this country will be forced into social reform and the younger generations will eventually have their say, that’s if there’s much left worthy of having anything to say about it…

Your Tea Bagger factoids are a little weak here “Freedom”. Old and infirm American citizens were starving back in the good old “Hoover” days. Simpson voted against being able to deduct SS payments from income tax payments, further burdening the working/deduct/payees (American citizens). Social Security has a SURPLUS until 2025. Minor adjustments could remedy this going forward.

Simpson is all giddy about being able to throw out his unchallenged quote “it (SS) is filled with a bunch of IOUs”. The clods in congress have no problem giving IOUs to China and paying interest (treasury notes). If this money has been embezzled to pay for wars, rockets and bombs legal proceedings should be forthcoming. Repay Social Security!

The oligarchy and their lickspittle media puppets have re defined Social Security as a government hand out. It is NOT. Don’t let Social Security be another loss to semantics. Simpson is throwing out these seemingly inane quotes around about a very important subject to the well being of the citizens of the U.S. to see if they will stick. • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HGHFALGGZ2RYXLJIKA6MG7BVMI kathleen

If you lived and worked back in the time Social Security first came out and for some years after, it was set up as a Trust Fund for any person who wanted to put into it. Note the word “wanted” because back then you had a choice to take it or opt out and not have it taken out of your pay. What was taken out was not considered a tax, because it was a savings and did not actually belong to government. It was a volunteer savings plan for individuals. The government was acting as a bank to store your SS savings account Trust Fund.

In the 60′s LBJ had the Trust Fund moved into ‘General Fund’ account and congress began stealing the Trust Fund of Americans. Somewhere along the line, to make it legal I suppose, and to make it all belong to government, Soc. Sec. amounts taken out of your paychecks not only became mandatory but were called a ‘tax’. Now it belonged to government.

As time went on, only congress knew they were bankrupting the SS funds and replacing their
theft with IOU’s. This was one of the best kept secrets in DC and at that time congress worried
about what the people would do if they found out. Well, with more water and events over the dam, it began leaking out and today, with all the problems facing Americans, the mishandling of the SS Trust Fund is common knowledge and people take it with a grain of salt………where is the outrage?

Sooner or later someone, somewhere should know that corporations, entities and individuals cannot do crimes and then bribe congress through heavy lobbying and contributions, make a law after the fact to legalize those crimes, specifically to let the people who committed the crimes off the hook. Such as was done with the telecommunication companies when they spied on people’s phone conversations without their knowledge nor consent, and even those companies agreement with their customers stated in writing that their confidentiality would be kept private. As we speak, congress is in the process of doing that very thing again, ILLEGALLY, to save the butts of the criminal banks and the crimes they committed. Legalizing the banks past criminal activity must not be allowed and this time we had better start applying pressure to all so called elected officials who repeatedly keep selling us and our country down the river.

The one glaring imbecility in Mr. Simpson’s small mind is his small mind set. Small minds are for ever focused on “small” issues. Seniors on SS is a relatively non issue when compared to what Mr. Simpson and his colleagues are guilty of.
    1) 4 TRILLION DOLLAR ON GOING WARS. 2) Billions in yearly aid to Israel and one or two others. 3) By ommission or commission advocating the outssourcing of American investment into NAFTA and other places. The list of “important” issues that matter is long.

Giving billions away year after year to foreign states ,,,building embassies in foreigm countries that cost $500 million each and then turn around and tell American citizens who pay taxes while they are employed that “THEY WILL NOT BE PAID ANY MORE UN -EMPLOYEMNT INSURANCE BECAUSE THERE IS NO MONEY” AND CLOSE TO 38 MILLION AMERICANS ARE UNEMPLOYED…..as a result of the decision of those who make up the Federal Government policy is far worse than the socalled “greediest generation”.

Does Mr. Simpson suggest that the American senior citizen eat cake if they cannot have bread?

But the plan is the opposite of what “civilization” should be doing.. instead of cutting taxes for the richest and telling the masses to bugger off, taxes on the richest, the ones that rig the game in the first place, should be going UP to cover costs of “running the country”.

Of course, the problem is the general public. Just look at how much we pay “professional athletes” to give us something to do on Sunday afternoons. We piss away a LOT of money in this country, and for individual entertainment.. while decrying anything spent on life for others. We’re a really really really sick people in America. Simpson is just the end result of such disease and rot of the soul, he just codifies what the majority of Americans really are.

You work for 45 or 50 years and then when you want to retire in dignity some rectal polyp tells you you’re greedy. “Let them eat beans,” eh Homer?

  • Anonymous

Probably one of the most overlooked bits of all of this. While our military and Congress folks have THEIR retirement/pensions, most of this country (outside of large corporation’s “management types”) had their pensions DISSOLVED by our government so corporations could “be more profitable”. The “solution” was for people to “put money in 401(k) funds”, which is code for “let them invest it in the casino called Wall Street”.. As long as the corporations did well, 40% of this country “kind of” had retirement accounts.

But that poses two distinct problems. Old people that had their pensions dissolved AFTER the decision was made to have people use the Stock Market as a retirement vehicle (those old people didn’t have a chance to invest because they thought they had PENSIONS coming), they are hosed.. and now we see the second major problem with this concept.. the STOCK MARKET IS RIGGED AND DANGEROUS, some people lost most of their retirement money when the market lost 1/2 of its value over the course of a year. Suddenly what had been enough “to get by” was slashed, drastically.. those people are SCREWED.

I’ve not seen ONE bill come through Congress suggesting no Representative ever get a pension again (nothing forcing them to save in the Market like WE do), nothing suggesting they lose their health care and have to pay for their own insurance (the insurance they have now is insurance, but is fought for by the entire government; none of them buy “their own” out there in the “free market”), and nothing suggesting dissolution of MILITARY PENSIONS.

So, yeah.. we, the people, keep paying for “them” while they tell us to fuck off? .. yet, 40% or more of this country SUPPORTS this abuse by the ruling class. Largely by duping them to vote with their RELIGION, which is the worst part.

Correct, “or raise revenue”. Seeing as how we told corporations they no longer had to honor their pension systems and forced everyone to “put their retirement in the Stock Market” (a scam that helped enrich the corporations, duh?), it seems to me that the way to “solve this” is to start putting OBLIGATION back on CORPORATIONS. If they want to do business here, they PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE.

The core problem is we’re stuck in Caveman mentalities here. The few running the corporations want it all while telling everyone else to fuck off. And if it’s not bad enough that they live like gods while they are alive, they want to build dynasties by keeping all that wealth “in their family” after they die? Why don’t THEIR kids have to be subjected to the same things the rest of the world faces?

If you want to be a realist, you have to admit that building dynasties creates an inequality among people. You have kids born of privilege that will never know what anyone else goes through in life, and those privileged kids will end up making all the rules from that unrealistic position (we’re seeing that now, with rich kids from rich families becoming Politicians). To prevent that, you prevent dynasties. 90% of everything over $2 or $3 million per child (capped at 2 children) is taken by the public after you DIE and don’t need it any more. Putting the UNUSED money back in the pot for others to be able to EARN.

And there are a LOT of things we could be cutting instead of Social Security.. how about the Defense Budget, for starters.

Alan Simpson should be stripped of his congressional pension and made to live on Social Security alone. He is nothing more than a pig. But why president Obama would appoint such a pig to a very high visibility, high risk position is outside my ability to comprehend. Obama seems to be a Trojan Horse, rather than the “savior” we were led to believe he was. With few exceptions like Dr. Chu, Obama’s Secretary of Energy, and Elizabeth Warren now heading the Consumer Protection Division of the Dept. of Treasury, Obama has made dreadful choices for his cabinet and administration. One might be forgiven for thinking he has done this on purpose.

I disagree with you completely hawkeye. There is no real Left anymore, at least not that you can actually hear, thanks to corporate media. Karl Rove’s greatest accomplishment for the right was to shift the playing field so far to the right that those who used to be complet wingnuts suddenly became respected commentators on Fox News. The real Left fell compeletly off the media radar–ie they were silenced–and in their “place” came the new left represented by the Democratic Leadership Council (the Karl Rove Wing of the Democratic Party). Under the DLC presidents Clinton and Obomber, we see the end of the Social Safety Net, the destruction of Glass-Steagal which put a firewall between our community banks and the freewheeling investment banks like Goldman Sachs, the emergence of NAFTA and “free trade” aggreements which destroyed the labor movement in America, and Health Care “reform” that delivered us lock, stock, and barrel, into the greedy maw of the “health” insurance industry. With Democrats like these, there really is no need for Republicans at all.

“I don’t depend on my government for anything.” Oh, yes you do. You’re just either too blind or too ignorant to know it.

You don’t keep you money in your mattress because you believe that the government will be there to bail out the financial industry and the FDIC will be there to come to the rescue when the bank you are using becomes insolvent. You depend on the FAA to make sure that the next flight you take doesn’t crash accidentally into another plane on landing or takeoff. You depend on the SEC to guarantee that all the companies you bet on when you are gambling on scottrade have told the truth about their earnings and their future prospects and that others aren’t lying to you about those companies.

You depend on government bailouts of the financial industry, and those banks “too big to to fail and bailouts of insurance companies like AIG that grease the wheels and provide insurance for the risky deals you bet on, because without big government you would have lost a hell of a lot more than you did in collapse of 2008.

You depend on the police department to keep you safe from thieves and to protect your property. You depend on the court system to prosecute all those who would or have harmed you and you depend on the penitentiary system to incarcerate them and protect you and yours from any possible future crimes that such people might commit. Rich people like you claim to be need this protection more than anyone becuase they have so much more to lose. You also depend on the fire department to come to your house to put out a fire if and when you need them.

The company’s you invest depend upon strict enforcement of patents and other business regulations in order to guarantee that their intellectual property which is what you are really betting on when you buy stock is protected. They also depend on the government taking care of those who would copy or sell knockoffs of their products for a cheaper price. You depend on accurate information and the government regulations that guarantee that accuracy, without it you might as well be betting on the ponies. You depend on the government to assure you that someone hasn’t taped into you phones lines or your bank accounts and taken all your money over night in some kind of computer bank heist, and you depend on the court system to save you in case someone defrauds you of some of that money you have accumulated.

So don’t stand around here claiming that you don’t depend on the government for nothing. I could go on and on, but the point is without the government watching out for you and covering your bets you couldn’t make all that money that you claim to have made betting on companies and their future performance.

In fact, without the blessings bestowed upon you by big government you’d still be working until the day you died and you’d die with nothing more than part of a week’s pay and the bills you owe sitting on the table in your crummy little studio apartment somewhere. Because every step of the way from about 1781 until today the government has made the protections you enjoy as a member of the upper class stronger and stronger, while screwing those beneath you.

All you have shown by your series of posts is that you don’t give a damn how anyone else lives or dies, you will continue to pretend that you are some rugged individualist who has made her or his money without any help from the government. When in fact the government made your wealth accumulation possible, and without it you would be begging for pennies or selling apples on a street corner.

Social Security is part of the employment contract. 6.2% is paid into Social Security by the employee and 6.2% is paid by the employer. An additional 1.45% is paid into Medicare. Social Security benefits cannot add to the deficit because Social Security is a “pay as you go” program. Current deductions pay, (with a one year lag dating back to the beginning of the program when deductions were collected before benefits began for retirees,) current retiree benefits. The only reason Social Security is being discussed is because businesses want the 7.65%, period. Everything else is just so much bull. Obviously, Simpson is on the bull side of the equation.

The fact that Simpson remains on the Cat food Commission proves that the Commission is on the bull side of the equation, as well. There is also the possibility that Simpson remains, because it is part of his employment contract.

Social Security is not a gift. The workers and the employers pay for the program. Social Security is part of the employment contract.

The other incentive that leaders are being dishonest about is if Social Security was privatized it would result in a seven to eleven trillion dollar windfall for Wall Street. Therefore, it is understandable that Wall Street should be for it; but it’s difficult to determine why Tea Baggers have antipathy for a program that helps them.

From a report entitled “Accounting for Social Insurance, Revised, published by the FASAB (the accounting advisor for the federal government)
Page 85 “Social insurance is not an employee benefit. The accounting methods for employee retirement benefits reflect the fact that employees voluntarily echange lower wages during their working years to receive certain future benefits. Such an exchange does not occur with social insurance benefits.”
Page 87 “A nonexchange transaction arises when one party receives value without directly giving or promising value in return. In regards to social insurance benefits the federal government gives value to beneficiaries without receiving value in return. The fact that benefits paid are not based on the amount of taxes paid confirms the nonexchange nature of social insurance.”

You sir depend on these things, and are utterly surprised when things don’t work out. Sound about right? I, on the other hand, depend on nothing being given to me. I do the math, question things others don’t, and figure things out myself. At no point in my life do I entrust my life to my government. Thats just fucking retarded given government’s precedent in that department.

You have no idea how wrong you are.

I have no accounts, no bank account, no checking account, no investment account, no retirement account, no credit cards no debit card, or other financial entanglements. No car, no truck. no boat, no motorcycle, no house, no condo, no real estate, no property, no medical insurance, no life insurance, no mortgage, who knows what else I don’t have maybe you can fill me in on all the things I don’t have, you seem to have plenty. But I am not depending on the FDIC, or the SEC or government bailouts or unemployment insurance or any other government program or state or local officials to aid me and since I have earned such low wages throughout my life my social security when I finally begin drawing it will be less than $700 dollars a month so I plan to work until I die.

I haven’t seen a doctor in well over twenty years. Nor, because of my experiences with them on those occasions in my life when I actually had health insurance, do I ever want to see another one again before I die. I have no use for a lawyer, accountant, architect or other licensed professional so I have no need to benefit directly or indirectly from a state or other sanctioning body to guarantee that the person serving me is properly credentialed.

I have lived a life of quiet austerity as a way of minimizing my effect on the environment and the world and to ensure that the destruction I participated in in Vietnam was the last such destruction I ever contributed to directly or indirectly.. I possess nothing but the small amount of money in my pocket, the thoughts in my head, some books, some clothes, a laptop, some music, and some films…that’s about it. I don’t eat at restaurants or buy deli foods so I don’t depend on the health department to keep my food safe. I eat mostly organic and I do hope that the government is making sure that what they say is organic is organic but I have no way of knowing that one way or the other.

I am not depending on the FAA, or the highway department, or any other such agency, because I won’t be flying anywhere anytime soon nor using a highway. I hope the bus is on time tomorrow but if it isn’t, I can walk. Nor do I depend on any government agencies to protect my wealth–I have none–or protect me should some accident or other tragedy befall me. I hope that when my time is finally over, I have the quiet dignity to die peacefully without making a fuss of any sort. I don’t want to linger or be saved. I will welcome death.

I have had a couple of the apartments I lived in robbed and in each case the damage to the owner’s property required the intervention of the police for their insurance purposes. I have never had insurance. In those cases, the police were accusatory and did absolutely nothing to get any of what little property I had stolen back while insinuating basically that the robberies were somehow my fault, even though I had very little to steal (in one case my camera was stolen but because I couldn’t supply a receipt for the camera which I had purchased in a PX in Vietnam nearly 20 years earlier, the police acted as if I was making the whole thing up and kept asking me why I thought someone would take the camera) and other apartments were broken into as well. My father committed suicide when I was still in grade school, and my mother went crazy when I was a teenager and I have been on my own since just before I was sixteen. So long ago I learned that I could not count on anything from anyone, and I haven’t.

So you are very wrong about me. Very wrong! Your indirect dependency on government agencies is far more intensive than mine could ever be. And no matter what you say, when you get defrauded by someone you are going to march right into court and sue them, and don’t even try to tell me you won’t. Whereas I have nothing to lose and nothing to gain. No one is going to defraud me except someone I word for and I have had that happen on several occasions but I have always quit when the first paycheck was missed to minimize my losses. And I am actually much freer in a real sense than you are. You are owned by your greed and your fear and your desire and your ambition. I have none of that! I am at peace and my conscience is clear! I am sorry for the damage I contributed to in Vietnam, but I vowed to do no more damage and I have done what I needed to do to keep that vow!
