Homeland Security shuts down dozens of Web sites without court order

The Homeland Security Department’s customs enforcement division has gone on a Web site shutdown spree, closing down at least 76 domains this week, according to online reports.

While many of the web domains were sites that trafficked in counterfeit brand name goods, and some others linked to copyright-infringing file-sharing materials, at least one site was a Google-like search engine, causing alarm among web freedom advocates who worry the move steps over the line into censorship.

All the shut sites are now displaying a Homeland Security warning that copyright infringers can face up to five years in prison.

According to a report at TorrentFreak, the search engine that was shut down — Torrent-Finder.com — neither hosted copyrighted material nor directly linked to places where it could be found. Instead, the site opened new windows to sites that did link to file-sharing materials.

“When a site has no tracker, carries no torrents, lists no copyright works unless someone searches for them and responds just like Google, accusing it of infringement becomes somewhat of a minefield,” writes Torrentfreak, “Unless you’re ICE Homeland Security Investigations that is.”

As of its last update, Torrentfreak counted 76 domains shut down this week.

Homeland Security’s ability to shut down sites without a court order evidently comes from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a Clinton-era law that allows Web sites to be closed on the basis of a copyright complaint. Critics have long assailed the DMCA for being too broad, as complainants don’t need to prove copyright infringement before a site can be taken down.

News of the shutdowns has some observers wondering whether the US really needs COICA, the anti-counterfeiting bill that passed through a Senate committee with unanimous approval last week. That bill would allow the federal government to block access to Web sites that attorneys general deem to have infringed on copyright.

“Domain seizures coming under the much debated ‘censorship bill’ COICA? Who needs it?” quips Torrentfreak.

However, COICA would allow the government to block access to Web sites located anywhere in the world, while Homeland Security’s take-downs are limited to servers inside the United States. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon said he would place a hold on COICA, effectively killing the bill at least until the new congressional session next year.

The owner of Torrent-Finder.net complained that his search engine was shut down without so much as a court order or prior complaint.

“My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!” the owner said, without being identified in the Torrentfreak article.

Earlier this week, Homeland Security shut down a popular hip-hop music site, RapGodfathers.com, which had nearly 150,000 members. The site claims it is compliant with copyright laws, as it doesn’t host copyrighted materials. However, its users posted links to file-hosting services such as Rapidshare and Megaupload, where copyrighted material may have been shared.

These domains are now “the property of Homeland Security,” writes Gareth Halfacree at Thinq.co.uk, “And there’s no indication that their original owners will ever be able to get them back.”

Its a double edged sword. And its because of Microsoft’s shitty operating systems that are the most insecure, and then the need of people to try and get something for nothing. No free lunch people. Nonetheless censorship and security are opposing terms in some respects.

Wonder if they’ll be shutting down Youtube anytime soon… oh wait of course not, it’s owned by a little U.S. corporation called Google, that also has been archiving books without permission online. They’re being sued of course… but it seems the strong arm of the Office of Homeland Security is selective in it’s definition of what copyright infringement is, while closing down sites that link as opposed to sites that host scans of entire books.

There ya go! They’re moving from spying on the websites to shutting them down. By next week, they’ll be conducting night raids and people will begin to disappear. By X-mas, Martial Law should be in place. By New Year’s the drones will be hovering over.

I hope y’all can see at the accelerated rate that all this is happening. This is the final phase, people. Get ready!

Too late. The experiment with democracy in USA has failed. It was never a serious experiment, not with the Senate, the Electoral College, and the early Supreme Court’s usurpation of veto power over legislation. Recognition of corporate ‘personhood’ nailed the coffin shut. And it’s not just federal. This current lawless rampage by DHS is just an extension of what states have been doing for decades re: abridging our inalienable rights.

Anyone who thinks the Constitution offers protection, lives in cloud-cuckoo-land. Anyone who thinks the current political infrastructure can be overthrown without megadeaths, is floating on the next cloud. Anyone who thinks anarchism offers an answer is also lost in a dream world. Power abhors a vacuum. As soon as one power structure is dismantled, another will brutally take its place. That’s just the fucking reality of us hominids.

For software developers it can be a real nightmare when 100s or 1000s of links are posted all over the net with downloads to the software. If you have to wait for a court order, the problem becomes even worse. There needs to methods to stop infringement. I don’t have the answer, but I somewhat welcome these new attempts to stop sites how profit from other people’s work (such as selling advertising next to illegal download links).

How soon before they start shutting down sites that criticize the TSA screenings? The bill that would have given the DoJ the power to shut down sites is dead in the senate, so now they just declare they have the power anyway. This COULD NOT be done without Obama’s sign-off, just like with the TSA screenings….he’s not only kept Bush’s dangerous torture/rendition/detention precidents..he’s taking things to an entire new level. Its not an exaggeration that we right now have a framework for a fascist domestic police state, complete with humiliating mandatory checkpoints and censorship and intimidation of those who criticize the powerful elite….all thats missing are the work camps and hooded night raids.

Fatherland Security strike again. They really have been on a bender lately. I find it endlessly amusing that doing corporate dirty work falls under the purview of the people that are supposed to be devoted to fighting terrorism. Mission creep much?

What doesn’t shock me is the Clinton era DMCA (a bad idea then and still a stinker now) being used as justification for this. There was one hot mess that net-freedom advocates saw coming in technicolor. If you give them authority in broad strokes, it isn’t a question of whether it will be abused…its only a question of when and in what innovative way the abuse will take place.

  • Anonymous

“Recognition of corporate ‘personhood’ nailed the coffin shut”

But that coffin is also being sealed on the self deluding power elites.

The super rich have seldom been overly concerned with their putrescent decadence, their insatiable greed or the dangers of unchecked power.

While they fiddle, wallowing in champagne and caviar, the inevitable historical reaction of the downtrodden will not, this time, depend on mass rebellion,

The power of new technologies are now available to all regardless of social or economic standing and either alone or with a small contingent, any modern day “rebel” can bring down a nation.

Only the blind (or the Bush) fails to acknowledge that one man, Bin Laden, has succeeded in panicking the most powerfully armed nation in the world into hysterical fascism.

The prophetic warning is still seared in flaming letters on the gated walls of privilege as it was centuries ago on the wall King Belshazzar of Babylon before the destruction of his kingdom: “Mane, Tecel, Phares” ! (You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting”).

I wrote earlier that “only the blind … fails to acknowledge that one man, Bin Laden, has succeeded in panicking the most powerfully armed nation in the world into hysterical fascism”.

I should have added that with each passing day, as they murder thousands of civilian men, women and children, the Pentagon and CIA are creating thousands of Bin Ladens and antagonizing millions of citizens around the planet.

And China sits on the sidelines … smirking at America’s historical effrontery.

  • http://www.phplinkdirectory.com David DuVal

When a website or individual repeatedly publishes illegal information that infringes on the rights granted to another, it is hardly “total bullshit” to want to stop them. The main problem is there is not enough technology yet to stop people.

Let’s say someone published every transaction you ever made with your credit card or bank account along with account numbers, and they published it one dozens of websites. I can can say “Too bad. You should have been more careful”, and then take no action.

Granted, we need laws to govern the methods we use.

“(such as selling advertising next to illegal download links)”

The small sites will be shut down, the foreign ones and the large corporate ones with political connections will keep operating. Here is an example of a company that makes a fortune from selling advertising next to illegal download links:

    https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&biw=&bih=&q=the+social+network+file%3Atorrent&btnG=Google+Search

    https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&q=the+social+network+file%3Anzb&btnG=Search

Google is actually a much more efficient way to search than most of the indexing sites, they directly profit from linking to these files, and it is extremely unlikely that the DHS is going to steal their domain any day soon.

The drones are already out. I’m a private pilot, in the last week I’ve seen more than a few predator drones between 6000 and 10,000ft. I tend to see them away from populated areas near small towns. The damn things are a serious hazard, they are painted to blend in with the sky, so if they are at or slightly above you they become difficult to see. None of the ones I saw were armed, but had the pylons to be armed…

I’ve seen these things in every state I’ve flown this week, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, California, Alabama, New Mexico, Arizona, South Carolina, Mississippi. I noted each sighting (in two cases I had to alter my course) on my sectional.

Something is up, the other pilots think it is just heightened security for the holidays. I think something more sinister is in motion.

Amen, If they think, just think they can touch or harm one of Gods servants, God will take them out. He and His people are inviolable, Christ in them is the Holy Ark. No man touched the ark and lived. No man touched or harmed God’s anointed today or yesterday. They will all be taken in their own craft.
7 He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth.
They cannot escape every day’s judgment recompensed upon their own heads, on them and the end Judgment of eternal death fire and brimstone waiting for them on earth and hell.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18)

A noble cause. Shine the light on these wicked men and their wicked deeds. Saddens me, That is wrong, I thought Al Franken would not fall for such wickedness. I have been hearing of some wrong doing by Him but did not want to believe it. God help him. We are supposed to pray for them. God bless them all. Thank God for them, our leaders. When we do Satan cannot direct them, we release His power off of them. The CIA, God bless the wicked CIA, thank God for them. Thank God for exposing them into the light. They must have black mailed Him. That is the mode of operation of the rogue CIA. They tempt everyone with wickedness, drugs women and then they get pictures while the government officials succumb to it. Just like the CIA created Crack Cocaine and taught the gangs how to make it, then arrest them and steal all the money they made.

Well now… what have we here? Are we now expecting that there will be a new justification for stripping citizens of civil rights? Will someone at DHS tell us that they have to protect the rest of the nation from “economic terrorism”?

    How about “file-sharing” terrorism?

Why does “Homeland Security” have to get involved in this kind of legal affair? Is Homeland Security a “super-legal” agency, immune from any Constitutional restraints?

And if they’re testing their power with, of all things, file-sharing, when will they use their “Promis”-like databases and satellite tracking devices to monitor the patterns of thousands, maybe millions of people who exhibit a profile of mere “non-compliance” with existing political profiles deemed unacceptable?

Here is a link below for a Great site to post your view and great observation. Trust in God they will not get away with anything. No one does. God uses wickedness as His sword of correction sometimes, even wicked governments of men; as he did with Pharaoh and Egypt. Did Pharaoh oppressing God’s people get away with anything? Not one thing did Pharaoh get away with. The people of Egypt paid for Pharaohs wickedness with huge losses by God’s plagues. God hardened Pharaoh so he could not repent so the plagues would not kill his son. These wicked ones are being warned to turn from their wicked ways, then they do not God hooks them, makes their heart hardened so they cannot turn. That is what is going on with these wicked rulers, money changers today, they are God’s sword because Americans hate God and his people, just as Pharaoh and Egypt. Pharaoh and His whole army were crushed in the red sea, after they gave all the gold to God’s people, they could carry, they could not carry all the gold they were given so much. Those who humble themselves and get low, turn from your own rebellion, cry out to Christ to deliver you until he does, they will get the gold and deliverance from all this wickedness, and oppression.

Big brother is right around the corner, what with MRI machines being able to tell if you THINK about lying, reading which parts of the brain fire up over known imagery and infrared readers seeing parts of the body heating up when extra blood flows to different areas…

Those scanners we’re bitching about now will be nothing compared the mind/intent reading devices, as easily hacked as voting machines, that DHS is going to start using, fully justified to ‘protect us’.

The CIA is Bin Laden, they stage it all, make sheeple believe what is not.
    http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/esp_sociopol_illuminati_24.htm
“Al Qaida” simply means “The Base.”

It was the base for Arabs who would sign up before entering Afghanistan. Please read Dr. Al Fagih’s interview above. It was the base where Arabs would sign up so they could be tracked down if something happened to them in Afghanistan. There are twenty to thirty thousand names on the “roster” of Al Qaida, many of then are probably very prominent names of Saudi Arabians, and very few would even think of associating themselves with a terrorist organization. The Bush administration was frantic in their search for a label for Bin Ladin’s group and the best they could do was “The Base.” Pathetic.

Here are some names for some very real terrorist organizations, and what they mean in English:
    Al-Gama`a al-Islamiyyah: The Islamic Group
Hamas: An acronym for “Harakat -Al-Islamia” or “Islamic Resistance Movement.” Hamas also means courage and bravery in Arabic.
    Islamic Jihad: Muslim holy war
    Hizballah: The party of God

By your inaction, your slavish servitude to your political overlords, your foolish acquiescence to any and all laws, no matter how much they offended the senses. You abandoned your sensibilities and relegated your responsibilities to the ones who now hold the chains around your necks.

    I DESPISE YOU ALL.

It now makes perfect business sense for anyone that owns a small website and hosts it in the US to host in a foreign country. There are lots of countries that still offer freedom of speech, protection from government harassment, privacy, and presume innocence until proven guilty.

Unless one moderates every comment and forum post, there is no way of knowing that users are not violating some DMCA rule, and years of investment could be confiscated without trial or evidence being shown. At this point, unless you are google or facebook(actually, don’t google and facebook host and incorporate offshore already?), it would not be worth the financial risk to host a social website in the US, when there are cheaper and safer options available overseas. Way to go DHS, forced outsourcing.

On a side note, I have been a member of the Tea Party Nation website for some time now. (I know, but there are serious lulz to be had). They have a ‘friend’ system with invite only groups, and you are allowed to upload video and audio files to your page, or into a group. I have seen more illegal file sharing going on there then any other social site I have joined. People share collections of thirty or forty albums at a time (usually crappy country/pop). Not that I care, but considering the teabaggers are corporate lackeys, it seems pretty hypocritical. I don’t know if Ning knows it happens, but it is a DMCA violation wild west, yet somehow I don’t see the DHS shutting down TPN anytime soon.

The only difference in the parties will be the type of BS they feed voters to pacify them and to receive their votes.
Obama has proven they do as they please and to h… with their promises.
Russia has more freedom than we do today.
Our freedom is whatever this government wishes to let us have for today.
The Bush administration was one of the most corrupted administrations in our history that we know of.
Forget the republicans we know how they stand, But Obama and the democrats never lifted a finger to investigate (which was unnecessary because they even confessed on some crimes) or prosecute any of the crimes from the previous administration and put the same crooks in charge which worked for the banking empire which help cause this economical disaster.
So treason , torture , invading another country’s sovereignty , spending our social security funds ($2.5trillion) , giving our tax money to the banks , sending our jobs overseas is just fine and dandy.
But if they believe you might take copyrighted material from someone, that is a series enough crime to take your freedom , rights , prosecute YOU and shut down any information they will you not to have. Why do you believe even other countries are attacking Wikileaks,,, to stop the flow of information we receive.
H… these Global Empires are stealing our tax money and not paying any taxes every single day amounting to million of dollars.
But U.S citizens are investigated by the IRS in case we might be receiving a $1 more than we should have.
Our every action or movement is recorded 24/7.
Our every key stroke , letter mailed , financially transaction , where we shop , where we drive , what we buy , how much money we spend and for what is recorded.
Yet they do not know what these Global corporation do , make and hide in foreign banks or investments.
These Empires tell them what they want they to know.
The arrogant of the supreme court judges just keeps showing us who is the boss/

Bush’s attorney-general told it like it was.
Some crimes are not crimes to be prosecuted..
Is it hard to guess who they were referring to.

Everyone remember this story because there need be no more proof than this that America is not a constitutional republic. Homeland Security is without due process of law monitoring copyright infringement (which by the way was limited to 10 years prior to, wait for it, 1996).

If an entity called Homeland Security can seize property or censor information without due process of law and that doesn’t remind everyone about the worst of what we were told about the USSR, China or N. Korea, then you are not mentally competent.

As the post below says, Wake up! The DHS is not going to allow you to do that.

The only way is for huge numbers of people to resist. Until that happens, forget it – or realize that you’ll be going to prison, and very likely as a terrorist without any rights, including the right to be charged. If you’re lucky, you’ll become known as a martyr.

If, however, you’re aware of a very large resistance doing just that, then fantastic! But why would you advertise it on Raw Story?

This was true in the big cities during the cultural revolution (mid-60s to Mao’s death).
Today it may not be a smart idea to let loose in those known quarters where the gov is obviously looking on, waiting and watching for dummies to fall into a trap – very much like we have here in our home.
But as for the regular Chinese man or woman on the street, in restaurants, at home – they are as free to say what they like as anyone in the West, maybe even more so because they don’t have a passive culture of TV all day then vainly hoping elected officials will take care of their problems.

    Okay, here’s an example:

On Windows, as an end-user trying to get to a censored site, you can:

    1. Windows Key+R to bring up Run prompt.
    2. Enter “notepad C:windowssystem32driversetchosts”
    3. At the bottom of the list add a new row, type the domain you want to access, then tab, then the real IP address of the server the site resides on.

This is enough to override what the DHS are doing – all that’s lacking is a system to simplify it and to retrieve the unhijacked domain/IP pairings.

What I’m proposing is an application that can interract with the hosts file (to automatically override a domain name if the end-user gives it permission to) and that links to an online database of the pre-censorship domain-name/IP pairs.

To the end-user, the process would be:

    1. Load application.
    2. Search domain name.
    3. Click “uncensor” button next to the domain name you wish to access.
    4. Go to your web browser and enjoy the uncensored site.

Back on the technical side… DNS history is available online to help validate the pairings, they can be peer reviewed, etc. and if necessary, the system can be decentralized and use hashes/etc. for additional validation.

So yes, I do believe it is so easy to get around DHS actions. We just weren’t prepared and we haven’t had a good system in place to index the required information to coordinate uncensorship efforts like this.

Now that the DHS has made it clear how they wish to play the game, it won’t be long before what I’ve described above becomes a reality. If necessary, I’ll develop it! ;)

Speaking of hackers. I may be going out on a limb posting this here, its not really on topic, but I can’t help thinking heres another way that hackers can help restore Liberty. The citizens need an internet of their own. How about one with infrastructure built in, that isn’t tethered to the telephone poles and cell towers of the corporations? Everyone could talk to their nearest WIFI neighbors, and traffic could route outward by agreements or by longer distance community or neighborhood point to point links.1) Deploy IPV6 capable firmware on all capable devices.2) Allow devices to autonegotiate unique addresses as per the NDP or SNDP protocols of IPV6.3) Implement a “routing policy negotiation framework” to auto negotiate routes with all neighbors based on distance, signal quality and other metrics. Basically an “auto negotiated mesh.” 4) Allow preferred routes, node weighting or blackisting, penalize remote nodes for non-routing. With enough bits of encryption, commercial services including gateways back to the traditional internet or telephone networks become possible.5) This network IS NOT intended to be a connection to sites on the existing internet. Rather, it would function as a new, separate network in its own private IPV6 subnet address space. Basic functionality of all nodes would include user profiles, social networking, P2P and file sharing, and – hey if its hackers who finally implement this – then why not built in anonymization and encryption layers for specific traffic as well.6) This network, being a separate network from the current commercial internet, could have two simultaneous DNSes, modelled on the BIG7 and ALT hierarchies of usenet. One can be maintained by regional committees and include its own TLD’s like the BIG7. Devices could use a certificate tied to their mac address to verify this first naming hierarchy. But no reason this couldn’t coexist with an ALT-style name hierarchy as well. This entire “digital citizens band” network and DNS system could be ubiquitous and separate from the internet, and/or could also be accessed from the existing internet as sub-domains of one new TLD if appropriate routes exist.7) Lower frequencies travel farther for a given output power to the antenna. Lower frequencies such as those currently CB radio could be re-used for longer-distance communication on this new network. If the FCC can grandfather all the old TV sets just to commandeer the 700mhz UHF channels to sell the frequencies to Verizon and other companies, then surely the citizens should be able to commandeer some lower frequency bands to share the benefit of increased range. ubiquiti and other wifi vendors already offer devices going into licensed and unlicensed bands as low as 450, 300, and even 180 mhz.8) Soon one will be able to join this network, or a network like it, by as simple a process as a firmware upgrade to an existing router, followed by making friends with your nearest neighbors on the mesh.ALL or nearly all these technologies, including the route negotiation protocol, will essentially be prerequisites anyway of that whole “internet of devices” that the media keeps pushing and that IPV6 is supposed to enable and that will enable an even finer level of granularity of corporate, marketing and government data collection and surveillance of our lives.. So, if the hackers and netizens of the free world dont jump on this idea or one like it first, the moment that “internet of devices” arrives, all it will take is some enterprising hackers to use the exact same tech to create a citizens WIFI mesh.Just a thought.

    there are no ‘terrorists’.

there are private interests who control and operate the mchinery of govt via the power of money, they are a close knit group, and their ultimate goals are religious in nature. making money is secondary but since money is their primary tool, every move includes the requirement that the move make money, and those in the group can position themsleves to that benefit.

What does Homeland Security chasing copyright infringement say about who owns DHS and what it is really for?

I’m not really sure what Homeland security has to do with copyright infringement. as far as I’m concerned, Homeland security and the Internet come together at one point. And that point is where anyone can use the Internet to affect the security of the United States. Breaking into our military computers, affecting our power grids etc. would be considered under the aegis of Homeland security. Not being a police force for corporate entities that overcharge people for their products to start with

  • http://wildernessvagabonds.com Mike Lewinski

Something has changed and I’m puzzled by this. The DMCA requires that copyright holders send a “takedown notice” to offending ISPs who host copyrighted content. Those ISPs then have a responsibility to have the offending content removed and there is a process for disputing the validity of the notice. When did DHS get enforcement power of the DMCA?

I’ve worked for an ISP for the last decade and we’ve received a few takedown notices over the years. Usually they come from the likes of HBO, Sony and other big corporate media conglomerates. Usually the offender is a home user who is running a bittorrent client.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PUACHEGXG2RISIVLLPJGMACULQ Karl

wait, what does protecting the entrenched rights of corporate copyright holders have to do with homeland security? can homeland security make coffee too?

  • Anonymous

Oh this’ll help freedom. An even cozier relationship between big business and big government. Pretty soon the PR industry can start supplying government with great inspiring symbols of power — say, roman style standards, exaggerated faux roman architecture, snazzy new uniforms, special boots … an overarching security department to stop the wildly exaggerated threat of terrorism …

On Windows systems, software can be installed without the user approving it or even knowing about it. That is the nature of Windows. The system is open, which users like for the convenience, and bad guys like for the – well, for the convenience. That is why viruses and malwear spread so easily through the Windows environment.

The Mac OS takes a different approach. The user must enter a system password before anything can be installed. That means even though a piece of Mac malwear can be created, it won’t spread. For instance, a Mac user won’t be infected simply by opening a bad e-mail or visiting a bad website the way a Windows user can be. The Mac user must actively authorize the installation of any bad (or good) software. There are ways to trick gullible people into entering their system passwords using social engineering tricks, but most Mac users won’t be tricked so Mac malwear, which does exist, quickly dies out.

I’ve been using Macs for many years and have never used an antivirus program. In fact, though such programs do exist, they mainly prevent Mac users from passing Windows viruses on to Windows users. Mac users find antivirus apps cause more problems then they solve so few of us use them.

Actually, you don’t need to interact with the “hosts” file at all. You just need to setup a DNS server – a la OpenDNS.com – and re-map the domains to the correct, uncensored IP address.

This is absolutely disgusting. I’m so ashamed of our country right now. On the legal level, this is a total violation of due process.

On the philosophical level, the fact we even that these sites even need to exist is a relic of the pre-digital age. There is such a vast amount of copy-left content, who really needs to download Kanye’s latest bullshit album? Fuck these greedy music label bastards. Music, like all art, should be free. Money should be made via live performances… and it can be, if you, as an artist, don’t sign your rights away to the music labels.

It’s quite simple. First the labels tried to attack music lovers directly. When that failed, they used the political system – corporate personhood – to buy off politicians to do their dirty work.

    RESIST!

Picking off websites for counterfeiting or pirating content is how they’ll begin justifying the shutting down of political dissent on the web.

If homeland security really wants to make a dent in counterfeiting and copyright infringement all it needs to do shutdown Chinatown in Manhattan. There an entire zip code can be summed up with the phrase “Knock-Off Central”. Down there, if it’s branded, it’s bootlegged too.

They are brick and mortar operations, not pages in the ether, it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Hey DHS here’s a head start, Chinatown NYC

Interesting that Chinatown continues to operate openly while single moms and a couple of web sites get fined or taken down.

Im sure this will get little to no mention in the M$M. After all they probably think some subsidiary of theirs will benefit from these shutdowns. Plus add to that that we are in the holiday shopping season and M$Ms primary purpose for the next month is to convince people the economy is getting better and if they are not in the stores shopping until they drop there is something wrong with them.

I figure within 10 years sites like Raw Story will be shutdown for not conforming to excepted standards of free speech. Home land security will shut it down with a message that will read something like this:

“Willful dissent is a federal crime that carries penalties for first time offenders of up to five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and torture. Intentionally and knowingly trafficking in dissent is a federal crime that carries penalties for first time offenders of up to ten years in federal prison, a $2,000,000 fine, and torture.”

  • http://www.phplinkdirectory.com David DuVal

It’s one thing when people share files with each other, but quite another when websites specialize in profiting off piracy. If you steal goods off the back of a truck, and nobody is hurt, is that okay?

We both know it is not okay because we know beyond doubt that a person who doesn’t own the goods on the truck does not have the right to walk onto the truck, take the merchandise and sell it or otherwise profit.

There needs to be certain rules that allow the authorities to stop websites that are blatantly stealing and profiting.

Again, it is a different story when you have two individuals sharing information with each other. And if a crime is committed, it is a lesser crime than a website that specializes in piracy. There just needs to be clear rules for enforcement.

I don’t know who you’re calling dip shit, I’m not wasting my time with someone from the Geek Squad who doesn’t know shit from shineola. Maybe you and Johnny Warbucks need to go back and take computers 101 and networking. You seem to think tracking cookies and their to be maleware. They aren’t. I’ll bet you’re backdoored and don’t even know it or where you computer is connected to at any given time. Your traffic could be going through China for all you know. • Anonymous

You are trying to split a hair. Good you use Linux. Not all tracking cookies or as you say installed crapware can get a connection without your permission to proprietary software unless is from a default install and then its the users fault for not knowing how to do a custom install. That’s the problem all the default networking bullshit but the majority of it isn’t maleware but hacked can be used for those purposes. And get installed through pirated software. And if you know programming like you say, you know its very well possible. Or why all the security updates for printers and anything that connects to the internet? Because it can be modified and send a persons traffic to who knows where.

  • Anonymous

You are essentially arguing the same point I am. I was just trying to bring it to the novice’s attention that you don’t just get infections, trojans, or what have you from torrents. I sure hope you can agree with that fact.

I agree the torrent itself doesn’t give the infection, its the install and the crack that opens the door even if its only to use the infected machine as a router through a legit service and not to steal anything. And I agree the novices or regular user be aware of what they could be getting into thinking something is free. And, I will admit, I speak from experience over the years that I’m wary of any torrent I may download and watch and see exactly who, what and where its connecting too. Microsoft needs to shut off a lot of its default connecting stuff like file sharing, net meeting, etc because most people don’t need it. Glad we can agree.

While I am sad to see torrent-finder go, I, nor should you, think they did nothing wrong. They profited off of these sites (ad revenue) not by offering copyrighted material, but by giving the names and addresses of those who could, and then giving directions on how to get there. Just like I wouldn’t get away with posting a directory to local crack dealers, sites like these can’t facilitate trafficking stolen goods. I want to save a buck like anyone else, but I’m not so naive as to think it’s a right of mine to do so. The only reason we have the opportunity to enjoy the excellent art we are lucky to have, is because these artists are being compensated. Would you go to work tomorrow for free? It is the world we live in, take what you need, pay for what you can, but don’t be misguided into thinking everything was given to us.

As a salaried person who was also on call, this happened to me all the time at my last job. One of my last times on call I was up and working for 48 hours straight over the course of a weekend, so yea I basically worked for free.

There is a lot of assumptions that are made concerning sharing copyrighted material that are not necessarily true in all cases. One is that people who watch/listen to this material for free would actually go out and buy it if it was not available for free. I can guarantee you that that is not true in all cases.

Also while I feel very bad for struggling artists not making as much money because of file sharing, I do NOT feel bad for multimillionaires complaining that they will only make 20 million instead of 22 million because not everyone paid for their product.

CONGRESSIONAL LETTER URGES OBAMA TO RELEASE SPY JONATHAN POLLARD

    November 18, 2010

    Dear Mr. President,

We write to urge you to use your constitutional power to extend clemency to Jonathan Pollard, thereby releasing him from prison after the time he has already served. Mr. Pollard committed serious crimes and he has expressed remorse. Such an exercise of the clemency power would not in any way imply doubt about his guilt, nor cast any aspersions on the process by which he was convicted. Those who have such views are of course entitled to continue to have them, but the clemency grant has nothing to do with that.

We believe that there has been a great disparity from the standpoint of justice between the amount of time Mr. Pollard has served and the time that has been served — or not served at all — by many others who were found guilty of similar activity on behalf of nations that, like Israel, are not adversarial to us.

In summary, we see clemency for Mr. Pollard as an act of compassion justified by the way others have been treated by our justice system. We urge you to use the clemency power in this case.

I agree with most of that (aside from a salaried employee assuming they enjoy a 40-hour work week). I’ve DL’d movies I wouldn’t have dreamed of paying one cent to watch (Paranormal Activity), and I’m not championing the cause for struggling artists…they knew what they were getting into. Also, I agree that the better, wealthier artists don’t feel as much of a sting, but without copyright protection, would our favorite artists still put forth the effort they do and have done? I feel it’s worth a few dollars to ensure another season of “Dexter.” The corporations, on the other hand, as a cumulative tally, are out more like 9 or 10 digits rather than 7. This IS important because, yes, they do have a lot of our money, but they also pay a lot of our taxes and wages. “Copyright infringement” = threat to “national security”??! Appropriate recourse is actions by Department of Homeland Security??!

It’s just another round in the move by federal government to accustom the populace to being policed (herded) in all their interactions. But none of this enforcement of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) can really take place without enforcers, individuals willing to threaten or actually use physical force. Did ICE/DHS send armed agents/enforcers onto the physical premises of the DNS of the particular websites? Did these agents threaten or actually use physical force on the technicians overseeing the servers? Or was it an “official notice” sent to the DNS or even ICANN, something with simply written “threats”?

Please keep something in mind. The politicians and bureaucrats – rulers – do *not* get out into the field and enforce their own legislation/decrees/mandates/etc. Instead they depend on the enforcers to do the dirty work. Therefore the enforcers are the key!! Politicians and bureaucrats simply talk and write, even when it is to give orders – whether to enforcers or directly to ordinary citizens (DNS and ICANN reps in this case).
Who are the actual enforcers of the rules/regulations being passed by ICE/DHS? Who goes out to the DNS and/or ICANN with guns to threaten or carry out physical harm for not obeying ICE/DHS orders?

Strong negative Social Preferencing – withdrawal or refusal of voluntary association with the reasons made public – towards government enforcers who continue in that role after attempts to logically persuade them of their errors (offers of assistance in obtaining new productive jobs is a good idea for those known personally), is the needed step. Public identification (photos, names and location) of these continuing government enforcers will enable others to also Socially Preference against them, thereby increasing the social pressure to change their employment, their major interaction behavior – use cellphone cameras and the Internet to the fullest. This selective (discriminating) association to exclude those who cause harm is a potentially *very* powerful method of non-violent action, referred to as ostracism by many down through the ages. It is included in Gene Sharp’s 2nd volume (of 3), “The Politics of Nonviolent Action”, Chapter 4, “The Methods of Social Noncooperation”.

Even in the current very unfree societies (of which the US is a major one), negative Social Preferencing can be effectively used to influence individual social behavior and the actions of the State. I have written about this practice in general – http://selfsip.org/focus/protestsnotenough.html

It goes without saying that the sooner large numbers of people make negative Social Preferencing part of their own behavior (together with positive Social Preferencing towards non-government related individuals who do provide value), the sooner the number of government enforcers will noticeably decline. And in the process, it is very likely that self-responsibility – including making one’s own food related choices – will achieve the role in human actions that is necessary for a truly liberatous society (in contrast to “libertarian” that has multiple incomplete and/or self-contradictory descriptions and “principles”).

I haven’t had time to read all the comments here, so in case no one has mentioned it…. my thoughts are this. This has nothing to do with copyrights (red herring). It has everything to do with bittorrent being one of largest file-sharing domains on the web 25-55%. Sometime this week wikileaks is going to release over 3 million documents. My guess, the point is to slow down or stop the flow of info. Of which wikileaks has already said will really piss-off some US allies and who knows what else:)

Damned if they do; damned if they don’t. What’s lacking in these applications is a degree of honesty – i.e. COINTELPRO. Public servants have shown little reason to attract respect when applications have all too frequently been associated with lies and political agendas. I shake my head at the manipulators targeting a Manhattan mosque when any educated individual knows that 9/11, for instance, had nothing to do with Islam. But if the average American had showed any ability to reason, George W. Bush would never have been elected in the first place. We all know now how corrupt the system is, but far more a threat to America is a complacent public – for accountability becomes little more than entertainment.

That is criminal government theft. Since when does theft when become righteous, and technological advancement become bad? Torrents, imo, are just plain better. They always download faster, they usually offer many different encoding options on audio/video/text, spread like wildfire through a very resilient technique of splitting up files, and are far more reliable. Not to mention the usual encoding quality-per-space ratio for videos is much better then that of say, iTunes.

This is a perfect example of corperations perpetuating themselves and using government as a tool in slowing technological development. This is nothing other then intellectual materialism. And it’s not even their fault either, they were brought up as children to perpetuate the same societal values and the monetary system. It happens everywhere all over the world and the only way to combat this is through education.

you know, after reading the story and the comments i find it hard to articulate how wrong this whole situation is. i think what bothers me most is that more and more they are using my tax dollars against me and some other decent people. they may have been doing it all along but now its flagrant as hell. the fact that it is is also disturbing because many people in main stream america will stand behind the abuses because they see them as a possible solution for the current crime ridden society we have. no one wants to be a victim of a crime, not theft, not libel, not even intellectual theft. however in their fear they advocate dissolution of the very rights they want protected. as long that is as it is done in the name of making them safer. and of course if it doesn’t directly impact them. we shouldn’t have to pass a new law to keep someone from being harassed to the point of killing themselves. society should step up and treat the offenders as if they were the scum of the earth. instead they are rewarded with their fifteen minutes of tv. time and get to see photos in the newspapers. i can’t remember the point at which we turned and became a people that whine and shout for reduced liberty to garner the feeling of security. i don’t think the problem is good law abiding people committing crimes that we are raging about but that’s the only people being affected by this government interventions. the people are rapidly getting to the point where they need protection from their protectors.

    a) Any Government that imposes this kind of unlawful, Unconstitutional and highly repugnant action by a federl government controlled by unlawful fashist corporate zionist and legislation derived from such evil divers enemies of freedom and liberty, using such evil to perpetuate frauds and compounds other criminal and unlawful acts, means the Homeland Security Act and COICA are both unlawful and when adjudged unlawful and against common right, becomes NULL and VOID!!!
Then there’s the doubts on Obama’s (if that’s even his real name) legitimacy as even a an eligible ‘validly nominated’ presidential candidate let alone be lawfully elected President, surely someone MUST be thinking of arresting, detaining and then investigating that traitor’s actions and taking down this evil empire of Serious Organised Criminals asap??
Ok, so there’s evidence of fake clothes going on sale via some of these domains but since when can a federal agency seize property in this way WITHOUT lawfulk excuse or and legal jurisdiction at all koz these Acts (of shutting down another’s property and our freedom to receive information from such properties) are derived from other unlawful and treasonous acts (Homeland Security Act, Federal Reserve Act, 1913 and UK Parliament Act 1911 etc et al) and again, needs to be diusassebled and arrested asap by lawful agenvies who are ionnocent of such charges!!!
What’s that bible quote? “He who has no sin, throw the first stone?” or summat like that…

stones, in this case, is a metaphor for innocence, and we dont need to prove that we the people are free from such charges against us unless we are ourselves traitors, murderers, thieves and/or Serious Organised Criminals like Tony Blair, Bush, Dick Cheney, et al??

I cant fly to Washington DC or Jerusalem or wherever these traitors hide but if you do, start organising Impeachment and other common laws trials and start publically examining the evidence in theaters, Church Halls, Youthclubs, hotel conference rooms, anywhere with the room and start showing that evid3ence, prove to your audience theat evidence, even in their absence then call and invite your local sherrif, magistrates and police officers, your national guard offciers and their commanders should see this shit I have seen on youtube and eklswehere, publicise those crimes as they have been documented and recorded, then record your own evidence YOU have all found, get it – the truth – out there!!! Your rights and freedoms are at risk and must be protected and serve by these noble and honourable actions – none of us are guilty of such charges against us, so why should we the people suffer from these crimes, like we have done in Iraq, Afghanistan, niger delta or elsewhere where these crimes against all mankind have been committed?? Are the commissioners and advocates of these treasons, war crimes crimes and crimes against all mankind have been Serious Organised Crtiminals for decades??
Have I not been innocent of such High Crimes since the day I was conceived by God?? Are not your parents agents of God and thusly outrank and trump even the evil and repugnat President and all others related and relevent?? I think therefore I am God??

But israel, AiPAC and other rel;event but foreign unlawful and unconstitutional constructs like zionism, DO NOT have the right nor privilege nor benefit of steraling other people’s property, prevent access to our freedom of expression and so-called alleged ‘Copyright infringement’ is itself unlawful and unconstitutional and therefore against common right and hereby adjudged NULL and VOID by those such evil divers acts!!!

Are you lot too dumb to realise that Homeland Security and their so-called ‘Tzars’ and Federal Agencies like ATF, FBI and HSA are thus also here and thereafter adjudged prohibited from committing proscribed and unlawful Acts of Serious Organised Criminals??

We are prohibited from sacrificing babies on the altars of churches these days, so why are you lot allowing and consenting to unlawful Acts of Serious Organised Criminals like Obama, Geitner, Bernanke and others who think they have a ‘divine right’ to commit such unlaewful acts as treason, War crimes or crimes agaisnt any one of us let alone all mankind??

What gives them their provilege to rob you, rape you, injure you, pollute you, inject you with anything or worse, attempt to kill you or anyone you know?? Or even and far worse, to actually prepare to kill you or, again even worse, actually fuikkin kill you as if from on high with God’s alleged blessing??

The God I know would NOT allow such actions to continue ‘on His watch’ so I know they are lying in that regard!!! So why are we the people still calling them President or Prime Minister or Minister, Sinister or Serious Organised Criminals and even worse, ‘Traitors’ working for a whole House across this world of other Serious Organised Criminals and Traitors??

Why all this M.A.D.ness from zionist traitors??

koz they are themselves M.A.D., as they seem to be working towards a plan and a blueprint of Mutually Assured Destruction and that is a symptom of that treason: how else can these Traitors justify their actions except by taking on psychopathic and treasonous minds??

“It’s not treason, you plead?? I say it is when innocents are killed and the innocent victims are called ‘collateral damage’, and they are called ‘traitors’ when they Order and compell and advocate and design and implement treason, war crimes and all the divers evils I and many, many of us have witnessed from many, many divers GOOD sources and testimonail evidence, aq lot of such GOOD and wholesome and freely recorded evidence proves beyond all doubt that these traitors have committed these crimes and have proven without any hesitation at all that they have committed such horrendous crimes as we the people have continued to witnessed, most if not all days here or on facebook or on youtube or elswhere via wikileaks even doirect to my email account!!!

“Let they who have integrity, innocence and peace adjudge those crimes and their perpetrators and decide for themselves, in full public scrutiny, the evidence of these crimes as we the people have seen for decades and record for posterity and for other people yet to be even born, and prove to yourself, the truth of these matters asap!!!”

The evidence I have given above is I can prove the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth and I dont need God to tell me that!!!
That is the truth, second november declartation and call to arms for all innocents of the world!!!

@PeteWa and StumTownHero If you think the libertarians where silent during the Bush era (either of the them) or the Clinton, Carter, Ford or Nixon eras, its because you weren’t listening. As I pointed out, we were being ignored. Certainly that cold shoulder was mostly coming from the press, and thus if you the man on the street didn’t hear what we had to say (if his primary source of information was the mainstream media) it is somewhat understandable. Nonetheless, we were out there. We were some of the first people making use of the Internet for organizing and education. It’s the reason that the Interet, still to this day, as the reputation as a libertarian haven. There were libertarian newspapers on campuses in the 80s (I helped run one of them), party newspapers (I helped run one of them), public broadsides and magazines (I worked on two of them), and academic journals even prior to that. Rothbards seminal works, For a New Liberty was published in 1973. FEE had been freely available to anyone for the asking since the 1940s. Of course, before the word even came into widespread modern usage, Rand, Patterson, Lane, Nock, Hayek, von Mises, Garrett, and many others were writing on various strains of libertarian philosophy and economics, and warning of the growth of government and corporatism in the first half of the 20th century — and being dismissed, mocked, or outright censored, not just in the press, but in academia. They were, however, anything but silent.

This is officially now a Fascist country! Everything hitler did in his day to be called fascist, America is doing that and more. As far as torcher and killing, America does that well. Are they doing it on Americans? They just know how to hide it better. They are controlling all freedom of thought and expression now, the country’s Constitution means nothing anymore. It really doesn’t matter, it’s all over. I will say when the day comes that they have pushed Americans too far, and it WILL come………………all the laws made by trampling on our Constitution and lying to Americans, all the toys they have made to subdue Americans en masse, all of the technology that they have created to enslave Americans….WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. I know from history, what Americans do when pushed into a corner, and I know from human nature what ANYONE will do in that situation. They have created prisons for Americans (hundreds) sporatically all over the nation just waiting for an inevitable uprising from those who won’t be enslaved. I will have to say, it will be a lot harder to keep those prisons under control when people know the real reason why they are locked up, and thats for the sheer reason that they wanted to be free. What they are working up to here is internet censorship and control over freedom of thought and expression, using this “piracy” as an excuse. Just like they claim that hackers and terrorists are a Homeland Security issue and that the internet should be controlled and taken down and people spied on without warrants etc. They are creating these terrorists and then translating the terror into blame on the average internet user, again, giving them an excuse to control you. They create the problem…..they get your reaction (usually as we know lately, lethargy and complacence..or traps for the lazy), the “controlled” media comes on then, telling of the problem and tells America that “the people” have spoken through polls, plants in audiences that they interview, and anonymous emails….that they want the H.S. to take care of the problem by doing something that removes yet MORE of our freedoms. Do a google search on “rockefeller shutting down internet” also “rockefeller internet bill” and you will see the bill and the video with the words right from his mouth what they want to take from you.

I voted for over 40 years now FRIEND , but when you have candidates promising one thing but arrogantly are doing another. Then you have another two to six years left to kick their ass out.
We need a method to recall them when they do not fulfill their promises.
Of course you now have some Judge on the U.S. Supreme court creating laws from the bench instead of interpreting law.
I voted against Bush & republican’s total destruction to our country and citizens , but that didn’t help with Bush stealing two elections.
Bush’s administration committed treason , torture , gave tax cuts to the top 2 percent , let over 8 million U.S. jobs be outsource with illegally starting an illegal and no one made anyone in his administration accountable for it.
With the corrupted electronic voting machines set in place over 10 years ago we do not even know if our votes are counted or counted correctly.
It also doesn’t help with the fact that Global Empire’s money around the world help to pay for candidates to win this election which are the same which help destroy it.
It didn’t help that Obama was afraid to stand up to these republicans as he stated he would.
I voted for Kucinich in the primary and the establishment corporate republicans , the corporate news media and even some of the elected democrats attack him to make sure he went no where.

America has developed some real control issues. The Founding Fathers established America and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in response to oppression and formed the United States of America. Law and law enforcement have become a tool of the rich and privileged to oppress it’s own citizenry from having any sort of productive life. What is the result going to be when there are just rich people and people living in abject poverty and hunger? I’ll tell you what’s going to happen. It’s going to be anarchy. As a social scientist and a reasonable thinker all I can see is the collapse of society in the future and madness. David Rockefeller didn’t want the Internet and we’re going to see it crumble and disappear little by little. Something as simple as a power outage can shut the whole thing down. That will be the true apocalypse. Something as simple as a bug similar to the Y2K scare can do the same thing. Oh well. Stock up on veggie seeds, at least then one can go out to the woods and grow food, The Federal Gov’t is already doing that.

I haven’t given up squat. I have no problem whatsoever with anyone taking down infected, maleware spreading sites including Facebook which is nothing but a nest of infestations. Kind of like kids passing their sickness to everyone is school. I still retain my right to visit any web site I wish, but it makes me proud to see such support for maleware and other nefarious net activity from all you so-called, self proclaimed progressives. eliminating this type of crap is progress, but you people can’t see the forest for the trees. You’re mixing apples and oranges. Its not censorship per se, and they do present security issues beyond your small world.

Another blatant disregard of due process. It’s probably the case that action would have been justified…. if there were a warrant or court order! And I fail to see how copyright violations constitute any kind of imminent thread to national security. These people are getting really
    scary.

This is unlawful taking of property. It may be that a court order would in fact shut down the websites in question (although that seems unlikely given free speech rules), but a domain name is property paid for by someone and as such, government taking of it requires some actual process. Past court decision have definitely sided with a website’s NOT needing to police all the things that others post on the site in order to remain in business.
This needs to be challenged in court.

The Canadian government is doing the same thing in Canada. Right now CBC is removing all comments from its web site. You could post a comment on a story and now it will not show up under the story like before. It was fun to watch the pro conservative posting under several names to give the illusion of support. Now all we have is CBC ( controled by the conservative government) view of a story and no feed back.

Good Lord!! There is no end to what our govt. will do to all of us. Before, it was called the Intolerable Acts that made Americans stand up to tyranny.

Need to read a new book out about Americans taking a stand against federal tyranny. With pat-downs/scans & now websites removed without court orders, it will soon be knocking on our door. It’s a great thriller & I recommend it….it may be our destiny.

[...] Homeland Security shuts down dozens of Web sites without court order The Homeland Security Department's customs enforcement division has gone on a Web site shutdown spree, closing down at least 76 domains this week, according to online reports. __________________ Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. [...]

Really, it IS important to spell things correctly, because words have a completely different meaning if they are misspelled. Not everyone is going to “get it,” when they read through a comment with a misspelled word. You have to have a point of reference, and sadly, some people have little to go on in their educational experience.

So, when someone gently corrects an error, please don’t fly off the handle. It’s not meant as a put-down, it’s not an act of derision. It’s simply meant to help. When I misspell something, and am corrected, I appreciate it. I know most people have to work at spelling. Thank the makers of SpellCheck for the software! (Yes, I DO use it from time to time.) But I was born with an ability to pick up language easily. Spelling comes naturally for me.

I just wanted to put this 2 cents in – in support of NJT. He/she didn’t seem to be criticizing the content, just fine tuning the spelling.

It’s only karma, the way you have treated your most oppressed your prisoners and the insane, becomes they way they treat you now that they have the power-the tables always turn, when you have the power to oppress others you feel so good about doing it-but when they are put in power and do the same to you you get all upset. They will not only give back what they got-but in revenge (which you worship above God) they will make it even worse that what was done to them, and it will soon be as intolerable for you as you joyously made life intolerable for them. That is the law of reality-you get back what you give-it is life showing you your truth-you are too stupid and evil all the while in false pride thinking how superior you are to those you oppress to see the truth.

Having made the spelling error in the first place I feel obliged to say that I appreciate the correction, though I am a bit deflated by the fact that it became the focus of the replies.

My spelling sucks and my grammar sometimes leaves a bit to be desired but fortunately I can place blame for that on my substandard government education.

Typos aside, the manner in which DHS picks and chooses who it goes after leaves a lot to be desired and shows obvious bias towards us and not the real problems we face.

I think you mean “Israel”. The quotation marks have become an important meme signifying that the world cannot take seriously anyplace that A) does not declare it’s international boundaries, B) exercises illegal occupation of another country for 60+ years, C) is guilty of the most heinous crimes against humanity known to the world and D) is run from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, etc. This is not a country but rather a Jewish theme-park for rich Americans and Europeans to exercise colonialism, Apartheid and play act at Supremacy to assuage their massive inferiority complex.
This is why more and more people only refer to the Zionist Death Machine with quotes around it. “Israel”.

  • http://newsfromtheperimeter.com/?p=432 Homeland Security shuts down dozens of Web sites without court order

[...] By Daniel Tencer at rawstory.com The Homeland Security Department’s customs enforcement division has gone on a Web site shutdown spree, closing down at least 76 domains this week, according to online reports. “When a site has no tracker, carries no torrents, lists no copyright works unless someone searches for them and responds just like Google, accusing it of infringement becomes somewhat of a minefield,” writes Torrentfreak, “Unless you’re ICE Homeland Security Investigations that is.” As of its last update, Torrentfreak counted 76 domains shut down this week. These domains are now “the property of Homeland Security,” writes Gareth Halfacree at Thinq.co.uk, “And there’s no indication that their original owners will ever be able to get them back.” Article from RAW STORY Tags: corruption, cyber-warfare, government [...]

sounds great. but i’m talking about leveraging *existing technology*. 802.11 already uses frequency hopping. the heavy lifting is already being done on a daily basis.

the only thing that remains is to leverage all this pre-existing tech to create a new, resilient “citizens mesh” network, and get people started using it.
