The founder of the whistleblower website responsible for releasing thousands of secret documents should be treated as an enemy of the US, according to a former Republican Speaker of the House.

Newt Gingrich became the latest conservative Sunday to suggest that WikiLeak’s Julian Assange deserves to be hunted and executed by calling him an “enemy combatant.”

“I approach this very seriously,” Gingrich told Fox News’ Chris Wallace. “Information warfare is warfare. Julian Assange is engaged in warfare.”

“Information terrorism, which leads to people getting killed is terrorism. And Julian Assange is engaged in terrorism,” he continued.

“He should be treated as an enemy combatant and WikiLeaks should be closed down permanently and decisively,” Gingrich said.

The former House Speaker added that the Obama administration deserved much of the blame for the leaked documents.

“This is a system so stupid that it ought to be a scandal of the first order,” he said. “This administration is so shallow and so amateurish about national security that it is painful and dangerous.”

Gingrich, who is now a paid pundit at Fox News, is just the latest conservative to call for violence in response to the WikiLeaks releasing 250,000 secret US diplomatic cables.

Townhall’s John Hawkins wrote a column last week entitled “5 Reasons The CIA Should Have Already Killed Julian Assange.”

Fox News contributor Sarah Palin took to her Facebook page to suggest that Assange deserved the same treatment as terrorists and insurgents.

“Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?” she asked.

Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told NBC’s David Gregory Sunday that Assange is a terrorist.

“I think the man is a high tech terrorist…he’s done enormous damage to our country and to our relationships with our allies around the world, and he should be prosecuted,” McConnell said.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was caught on video at a book signing at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif. saying that the person that leaked the documents to WikiLeaks should be executed.

“Whoever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason,” Huckabee said. “I think anything less than execution is too kind a penalty.”

Palin, Huckabee and Gingrich are all paid Fox News contributors who are thought to be contenders for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Gingrich indicated Sunday that he was likely to make a presidential bid.

“We’re much more inclined to run than not run,” he said.

This video is from Fox’s Fox News Sunday, broadcast Dec. 5, 2010.

Julian is welcome at my house anytime. Newt Gingrich is not.

  • Anonymous

    take note:

Every person in the media that calls for Julian to be deemed an “enemy of the State” is part of the ruling elite rich; what they are saying is “this man is damaging our ability to keep the American People under our thumbs, to keep the carefully crafted tyranny we have set up that lets us abuse the masses”.

Julian and WikiLeaks are an enemy to OLIGARCHS, not the citizens of the United States (or any other nation). Knowledge is something that should never be locked away in a box to be used against people, especially the people that PAID for that information. The ruling elite are afraid they might lose their strangle hold on this country if we, the peasants, fully understand just how ignorant and juvenile and slimy our current “leaders” are.

Newt, you shouldn’t stop the meds.

Gingrich is an enemy combatant. He’d destroy any freedoms he could just to stroke his own ego.
He is a significant part of that cancer which eats America from the inside out.

  • http://twitter.com/savagelight ThatBostonMan

Are you willing to accept a rape charge for Julian Assange?

If not then you have no business supporting him.

  • Anonymous

No Mr. Ginrich. YOU are the enemy combatant.

  • http://twitter.com/savagelight ThatBostonMan

Not at all. If you haven’t noticed, the government can ruin anyones life just by making a phone call. Not even the government but just some head of an agency within the government who I wont name.

A career as a journalist can be ended with a phonecall, A marriage can be ended with a phonecall, do you understand the amount of power the spy agencies have? They can ruin your life just by making a phonecall.

Do you realize how much these agencies know about you? How much they have to use against you? Just one phonecall to reveal all your darkest secrets to the people you care about most, that is the sort of threat that the government hangs over peoples heads.

So lets not blame Gingrich, or any of these sorts of people. They do not have free will.

  • Anonymous

Ron Paul obviously had enough free will.

Yeah, our military-industrial-intelligence complex has way too much power.

But net let’s not indulge in dis-empowering fantasies of hopelessness and victimhood. Because there’s one thing that We The People still have : numbers.

If millions of us speak the truth, there won’t be enough people in the NSA or the CIA or god knows what alphabet soup agency to make all those “phone calls”. I certainly haven’t gotten one.

  • Boneman

It’s funny how what you said is always SO obvious to We The People and is never admitted in the MSM.

  • Anonymous

There must be information on either Murdoch or Ailes, or they are just taking orders from the “chosen ones”, that they are sending out their minions smearing Assange with a fervor and are all calling for his execution. However, if Assange is a mossad asset trying to embarass the US, then DC is in a “catch 22″ because of the claims Israel is our ally. This is starting to get very interesting !

Newt is right! we ought not know that Pakistan is helping those who kill Americans. That the head of Afghan govt is corrupt and freeing drug dealers, that our State Dept is spying on friends as well as enemies and so on and so forth. You tell em Newt…democracy prevails with you at the helm.

Or do you think your neighbor will snitch?

  • Boneman

I hope this sort of thing like wikileaks becomes more and more prevalent in the near future. High crimes and misdemeanors should not be tolerated in this country. It seems as these oligarchs become more and more brazen the more and more We The People will find out about it. Not that 911 wasn’t brazen enough.

A major Jewish religious figure in Israel has likened non-Jews to “donkeys and beasts of burden,” saying the main reason for their very existence is to serve Jews.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, is considered a major religious leader in Israel who enjoys the allegiance of hundreds of thousands of followers. He also is a former Chief Rabbi of Israel and was quoted by the right-wing newspaper, the Jerusalem Post, as saying that the basic function of a goy, a derogatory word for a gentile, was to serve Jews.

Newt Gingrich’s comments definitely imply that he must be one of the “goys” the Rabbi was speaking about.

@ThatBostonMan- let’s put your “rape” charge in perspective. In Sweden, having unprotected sex can result a charge of rape, even if it is a willing act between both parties. And if I’m not mistaken, there was no assault involved here, as rape would be described here in the ‘States.

Gingrich is towing the classic Republican line…to blame everything on Obama. This party’s relentless pursuit of pointing the finger at anyone and anything but itself will come back to bite them in the ass one day.

If I’m not mistaken, these documents were “stolen” during Bush’s time in power? So why didn’t the Republicans do something about it at that time?

If you hate the Free Speech Clause and the The Freedom of the Press Clause of the 1st Amendment, you might be an authoritarian demagogue.

No military secrets have ever been released by WikiLeaks. Assange and his organization are not the equivalent of the Rosenbergs. These diplomatic cables simply allow the American public to see the true face of our government that the rest of the world sees every day, to see the authoritarian policies necessary to maintain our empire. Empires are never run through the consent of the governed.

We are witnessing the collective cognitive dissonance that arises when a democratic state tries to run an authoritarian empire. Just as in Rome, we will have to choose to keep the empire and eventually succumb to authoritarian rule here or give up the empire and keep our democracy. We are very close to the point of no return.

    repuglicants are hypocrites!!!!!

  • Anonymous

I’d love to have a few minutes alone with my favorite spineless draft-dodger, Newty, oh how I’d love that!

Instead, Obama — unworthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (as are so many of the past reciipients) — should pass it along to the worthiest of recipients, Julian Assange, for resurrecting something called a “free press” and an actual media, for real change.

And if anything happens to Assange, Newty, Huckaboob and that Palin airhead will suddenly have a whole bunch of mortal enemies to deal with overnight!

    Mark my words……

In the reframing taking place, the Newty Newsies refer to “lowly PFC” Bradley Manning.

So how’s about we review his qualifications comparied to republiCON speaker of the house, John Boehner, and a former presidente.

John Boehner was incapable of finishing US Navy bootcamp back in 1968, but still went on to fraudulently and feloniously claim to have served in the US military during Vietnam when he was first running for the House of Representatives —- until the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) called him to task for his perfidy.

Obviously, Bradley Manning, who did indeed finish Army bootcamp, is far more qualified than John Boner.

Now former president George Weasel Bush, only managed to complete four weeks of enlised USAF basic training — also in 1968, I believe (since it last a total of 8 weeks, and usually there may be several days of in- and out-processing, being charitable one would say he lasted only half-way through before washing out).

Yet Bushie’s father pins on his Lt. bars, a direct commission having no prior qualifications???

Obviously, Bradley Manning is far more qualified than George Weasel Bush.

Truth will out, and that is why the financial-intelligence complex running the USA is running scared.

Because we should not simply look at just each release of documents from those being Wikileaked, but begin to observe the overall pattern.

    That is what they fear.

  • Anonymous

Assange is no more an “enemy combatant” that Judith Miller was in supporting lies that lead us to war in Iraq in the NYT. Does Gingrinch not remember how Valerie Plame was outed, then Libby the fall guy’s sentence was commuted?
Before these GOP’ers play fast and loose with covert, non-official cover CIA agents perhaps they should think of the ramifications down the road.

It is historically interesting to note that it was President Wilson who pushed for the passage of The Espionage Act, which he latter used, together with the Sedition Act, to imprison another American hero (Bradley Manning being the hero I’m referring to), Eugene Debs.

Democracy is us electing politicians for office. But how can we make informed choices about who to elect and re-elect if they keep a huge amount of facts and data from us, if they make deals hidden from us, and if they make decisions based on data not available to us?

Assange is not an enemy combattant, though he is aiming at the elites’ ability to keep the population in the dark. His goal seems to be open government.

  • Anonymous

If what these right wing freaks say is even REMOTELY appropriate (which it isn’t) then Bush and Cheney should be executed for leaking Valerie PLame’s identity, which had a MUCH greater real-life impact on real people and real operations and put real operatives at risk.

These Wikileaks documents are mostly just EMBARASSING. If that warrants execution, then the Plame incident DEFINITELY does.

Nothing that Assange released was unknown before the release. This is certainly less substantive then the Pentaqgon Papers and did less harm to national security than Valerie Plame’s outing for purely political purposes. If anyone could be logically accused of treason right now it would be the republican leadership for not supporting our troops by refusing to fund them.

What few Republican nuts and Media refuse to say is Wikileaks has been in business since 1966 and over the years even the US has benefitted from the information with no problems. But now the crimes done over the 8 years of Bush are exposed Wikileak is a criminal. Most of the people commenting are clueless about what a computer is and know nothing about the Tech Age. Law Maker and Judges along with 5 Supreme Court Justices don’t use cell phones or computers. Assange is one of many Chiefs Wikileaks has had and will have. The dumb nuts don’t know the information will be released in a time released manner even if the company is shut down. Remember when Republicans said Obama couldn’t use his blackberry but they didn’t know what it was. One idiot Law Maker said no other President had a blackberry and Bush didn’t have one so Obama shouldn’t either. The World laughed and many Americans got to see first hand how stupid and behind the times our Govenrment leaders are.

The talking point that Assange is an “enemy combattant” or a “terrorist” is an attempt to extend the already extensive invasion of constitutional rights, human rights, and reason itself by the Patriot Act and similar legislation. It is not only un-American and unpatriotic, it is fascistic and downright evil. This man and others calling for Assange’s extra-judicial “execution” or “assassination” are trying to undermine what America stands for. It is they, not Osama and Al Qaeda, that “hate our freedoms” in the words of W. If there are terrorists here, it is them. They are terrorizing the people to gain control over them.

Americans are too lazy to find some website, download diplomatic cables, and read through thousands of the things to form their own opinions. Without some traditional publisher like The Guardian predigesting these cables and telling American readers what was shocking and interesting, this whole story would be nonexistent.

Therefore, the real terrorists here are the British The Guardian, German Der Spiegel, French Le Monde, and Spanish El Pais.

Here’s one Terrorist Mastermind – Andrew Miller – who heads up the Guardian Media Group – this enemy combatant deserves to be hunted down and executed by the CIA:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jul/05/andrew-miller-gmg

I approach this very seriously – information warfare is warfare. Andrew Miller is engaged in warfare. Information terrorism, which leads to people getting killed is terrorism. And Andrew Miller is engaged in terrorism. He should be treated as an enemy combatant and Guardian Media Group should be closed down permanently and decisively. The same goes for those other Terrorist Corporations in the troubled and violence prone Western Europe.

I couldn’t agree more, but terrorism in all it’s forms needs to be eradicated, including terrorist sympathizers. They are the enablers and the future terrorists and they need to be rooted out of their urban caves.

I think that all the readers of the Guardian need to be identified and immediately added to the ‘No-Fly LIst’ and should be questioned by the FBI and have their employers alerted that they are terrorist suspects.

I would say the same treatment should be extended to the readers of the New York Times, but they decided to only publish the gossip parts of the ‘Terrorist Cables’, so they are more like terrorist groupies. Although, all NYT subscribers should have their phones and emails monitored, just in case, and the NYT should not be available on airplanes anymore.

Anyone that commented on web forums, boards or social-media in a positive way about these brutal anti-American terrorists should also be added to the ‘No-Fly List’ including all Raw readers and anyone that has even heard of Reddit. I don’t feel the skies would be safe with people that are not fully indoctrinated in the US government-authorized belief system.

This just shows you how out of touch the status quo politicians really are. They obviously haven’t been on the internet lately. Overwhelmingly, the people of the United States are grateful for the leaks and look at Assange in a positive light, certainly not as a terrorist. I’ve posted on numerous mainstream media websites and 90 plus percent are in favor of the leaks and realize that the gov’t is behaving in this manner because they’ve been caught with their pants down. They’ve been exposed and there is no other way for them to react but in an irrational way. There only advantage has been how the mainstream media has attempted to salvaged some of their reputation by going into damage control-But I honestly don’t think it’s helped much.

Now they are threatening students and government workers to not post on facebook, twitter or even look at the documents. The Gov’t is actually crucifying themselves by doing this. It shows just how crazy and un-american they really are. It shows just how much they desire to control our very thoughts and actions. This is a free country and free countries are suppose to have diverse ideas this is what maintains the balance. If I wanted fascism I would move to a fascist state. Sadly, America is headed further and further away from it’s ideals and drifting more and more into some Whacked Out Orwellian Alternate Reality. In my opinion Newt is a little nutty and delusional if he thinks he has a chance at winning the presidency. The American People have awakened from their slumber and only the mindless would vote for a status quo goon like him.

Freedom only survives in the light of truth and openness. When the government fears it’s citizens so much that we are kept in the dark from their actions on OUR behalf, freedom dies.
As we are told at each and every violation of the fourth amendment, if you have done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear. It’s time the US government lived up to that.

Let’s take a good look at the Swedish women at the heart of the so-called ‘rape’ charges that Interpol is now attempting to arrest Assange for in an obvious effort to silence him. Who are the real terrorists here? It certainly isn’t Assange. Here are a couple of links:

“Yesterday Alexander Cockburn reminded us of the news Israel Shamir and Paul Bennett broke at Counterpunch in September. Julian Assange’s chief accuser in Sweden has a significant history of work with anti-Castro groups, at least one of which is US funded and openly supported by a former CIA agent convicted in the mass murder of seventy three Cubans on an airliner he was involved in blowing up.”

    http://my.firedoglake.com/kirk…/

    http://www.counterpunch.org/sh…

IMO, anyone who supports the suppression of truth and freedom of speech (such as newt gingrich, et al.) is an enemy of the people–we have a right to know what is being done in our name. The accusations that Assange is a rapist, terrorist, enemy combatant, etc., that’s being put out there by predominately republican leaders is transparently bogus. The urgency of silencing Assange only really heated up when he indicated that the next document release was going to be about the banksters/corporations. They’re the ones that are all in a panic and desperate to silence Assange through their foot soldiers, the republican leadership.

Asssange needs us to support, aid and protect him. There is going to continue to be an onslaught of accusations against him–he’ll probably even be accused of pedophilia at some point and other bogus heinous crimes–the purpose of which will be to get the people of the world to turn against him. The real criminals who are at risk of exposure in all of this are going to make every effort (at least at this point) to keep from turning him into a martyr by killing him. So don’t believe the bullshit about him–he’s exposing the cockroaches to the light for all to see.

Assange is obviously not doing this for his own personal gain. He has put himself in extreme danger simply for the sake of exposing the truth. He is a genuine hero and should be treated as such by the people.

Newt ‘Fear Itself’ Gengrich: I will always remember his lecture on fear to the National Press Club. They absolutely ate it up; you didn’t have to be smart or even alert any more just shake like a bowl of jello and say without referring to anything in particular, “We’re in REAL trouble now.” The last accurate report I read of the Newt was that at his Rocky Balboa like entrance to a Republican side show he was unable to fit a belt around his bouncing and out of control corpulence. It is also useful to note that he always speaks from behind some barrier between him and his audience or cameras. With no disrespect to Little People Newt is only 47 inches tall.

AS IN ‘C’ STREET AKA THE FAMILY

  • labman57

Are the WikiLeaks disclosures an act of terrorism? Not by a long shot. There was no threat of violence in the words or actions of Assange.

Is Assange guilty of treason? A bit tough, considering he’s not a U.S. citizen.

On the other hand, is the conduct of Assange some form of patriotism? Again, he doesn’t live in the U.S., so not relevant, nor applicable.

So taking into account the actual content of the disclosed documents and the motivations of Assange, how should we characterize the WikiLeaks phenomenon? Malicious mischief.

As far as the sudden ramping up of web attacks on the WikiLeaks web site, I suspect it has more to do with an effort to prevent the forthcoming banking industry disclosures than the diplomatic documents already released.

Irony. The reactionary right wingers who demand that Obama put a “hit” on Assange are the same hyperbolic folks who are fond of associating the POTUS with gangster-style Chicago politics.

If Assange is an enemy combatant then so is Alan Rusbridger (Editor of The Guardian), so are Mathias Müller von Blumencron and Georg Mascolo Editors of Der Speigel and let’s not forget that well known bastion of Terrorism, Rupert Murdoch owner of Fox News, that has been happy to discuss the content of the leaks too. Sarah Parin, widely tipped as a 2012 Republican hopeful, who famously used a private Yahoo account to send work-related messages, in violation of public record laws (a story broken by Wikileaks) wants Assange “hunted down” presumably to thank him for helping her to go straight and not do it next time.

There is no rape charge against Julian Assange. Period. There is a “sexual misconduct” charge in a foreign country, and that charged is rooted on 1) someone claiming a condom broke during sex and Julian didn’t stop having sex when it did (I’ve had condoms break, and you generally can’t tell when they do, and it’s usually at the END, when the pressure of ejaculation breaks it, by then it’s OVER), and 2) someone saying they had consensual sex with a condom, then she didn’t want to have sex again without one, but she said yes anyway.

There is no “rape”, there is no violence, there is no forcing a woman to have sex against her will.. there is detail that can’t be proved that barely counts as reasonable in the rational mind. These women consented, and are claiming they “didn’t like the idea” at some point, but never said NO.

But, by all means.. keep sucking up the MSM hit pieces and ignoring the facts. That worked out well in 2003 when we decided to illegally invade Iraq.

Rupert Murdoch knows he is ineligible to be President of the United States, so he is looking for a proxy among his hired talking heads. Normally, I would have thought that if Gingrich and Palin are the best he can come up with, Obama is a lock for re-election. But remember Reagan? We all knew he’d be a disaster, thought he was Jimmy Carter’s golden ticket to re-election, and yet he got elected anyway, and sure enough, was a disaster.

There is still a sucker born every minute, and in our country, it appears, from the results of how people responded to paid political advertising and Fox Propaganda, more like one every second.

The question is not whether or not the likes of Gingrich and Palin are qualified for the presidency. You might ask the same question about Yogi Bear. The question is whether or not we as a people are stupid enough to elect one of them. From the results of the most recent election, I’d say, sure. Given enough of an advertising budget, we’d elect Osama bin Laden as long as he ran on the Republican ticket.

I understand your comment but I think it’s more that they enjoy fear-mongering so they can push through their agendas. The elite have always boasted how they love a good crisis. Beware…they might use the leaks as their catalyst to end net neutrality. It certainly would not surprise me. They used 9/11 to destroy many of our freedoms and liberties. In fact with 9/11 they had the Patriot Act completed and ready for distribution a day before 9/11 even happened. They were waiting for such an event. This was also stated in a think tank called PNAC where Cheney & other NeoCons were waiting for an event of a pearl harbor magnitude, so they could have a pre-text to attack Iraq.

He’s not _charged_ with rape, he’s not _charged_ at all, he’s wanted for _questioning_ for “sexual misconduct” (as the would-be charge), not for “rape”.

Using the word “rape” is intentional, misleading, abusive, and in this case, slanderous. Or is it libel, since it’s in print; I forget.

The point is, TBM is playing into a false meme and it should be called out. And it isn’t publicity when the vast majority of those who will hear about Julian for the first time, in connection with the word “rapist”, will forever shut down to any and all valid information associated with that name. This assault on his name is _intentional_, it’s engineered, and it’s part of the PR game that has this entire nation falling off the cliff while the ruling elites (that he’s trying to expose) walk off with all your freedoms and money. They are using psychological warfare, they are tying unrelated negative emotions to the thought of “outing” our criminal leadership, and they are doing it on purpose.

    This isn’t publicity, it’s a hit.

I don’t think that ‘net neutrality’ is something to worry about at least from the fear mongering aspect. The more open and accessible it is the more people will worry about not having that sort of space and become fearful of losing it…if you become fearful then they have won…if you don’t become fearful but grumble a little about it then YOU have won. I watched the 9/11 stuff until I became cross eyed. I made my neighbors nervous. I finally realized that a giant denial machine was out there that just would not stop or listen to ANY reasonable discussion of the subject. All of your observations are well documented and are part of the conspiracy side of things but the other side, the wicked fairy godmother side, just will not stop cackling and declaring war on countries with tribal, aboriginal peoples who control real estate or natural resources that Exxon wants to control or steal. It is instructive to observe now what an insignificant amount of oil for example was corporately dissolved in to the Gulf of Mexico, how quickly the well was taken out of production and reserved instead for our great, great grandchildren’s go carts. The driving public is a favorite whipping boy for the fear mongers. They know that we cannot walk to work, we must drive because we are creatures of the automotive architecture/culture, so our innate fear of walking is a perfect target for these clowns. There could be something far more sinister at play here though, browse the crime scene photos at Dr. Judy Wood’s site. These are official still photos made during 9/11. As a former photographer I can say that still photography engages the observer’s imagination; it permits him/her to draw conclusions that film or video prohibits. Of course it is of no help whatsoever to view any video accompanied with voiceover but that’s something else. See what you think. You may also want to explore the physics of fire compared to the instantaneous heat generated by explosives and depleted uranium. All parts of the puzzle. Good hunting.
