Homeland Security ‘messages’ coming to Walmart, hotels, malls

Shoppers at Walmart will soon have something other than glossy magazines and chewing gum to look at when in the checkout line: A “video message” from the Department of Homeland Security asking them to look out for “suspicious” activity and report it immediately.

It’s part of a new Department of Homeland Security program that could see Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s face on video screens in malls, retail outlets and hotels across the United States.

The Walmart video, which will soon be launched at 230 locations nationwide and may eventually be expanded to nearly 600 locations in 27 states, features Napolitano thanking the retailer by name for participating in the program.

Napolitano then says: “If you see something suspicious in the parking lot or in the store, say something immediately. Report suspicious activity to your local police or sheriff. If you need help, ask a Walmart manager for assistance.”

The video, which doesn’t appear to offer any advice on what constitutes “suspicious” activity, is part of DHS’ “If You See Something, Say Something” program. It was launched originally in the New York City public transit system and, according to the DHS, is about to go nationwide.

Besides Walmart, the program has partnered with Mall of America in Minneapolis, the US’s largest mall, as well as the American Hotel and Lodging Association, rail operator Amtrak, and the Washington, DC, public transit system.

“In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the ‘If You See Something, Say Something’ campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America’s businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the country safe,” DHS said in a statement.

The following video was posted to YouTube by the DHS.

Big Brother Is Watching You Shop. So nice of Mrs. Napolitano to be worried about what might happen to people at WalMart, so caring and comforting. Why, Big Brother really *is* my friend… Now, just look at that brown-skinned man with his children over there; he doesn’t looks suspicious, does he? Well, better safe than sorry — let me make his life hell and report the fact that he’s somehow alive to the WalMart greeter on my way out — it’s the least I can do to preserve the American way of life…

i see my country’s government violating the constitution by interfering in my and other’s rights to pursue happiness, privacy and not be subject to unwarranted search and seizures every day as well as some pretty clear indications that they have lied to me in the past and are lying to everyone still today about what they are doing with my tax dollars, in fact i have heard rumors that they are using it to commit bribery and kill innocent people for some nefarious reasons. i think they might be terrorists,

and they seem pretty suspicious to me, who do i report that to?

That video seems suspiciously like the Stasi from East Germany, I hope people phone and report that they just saw something that looks like a communist conspiracy, and then yell “WOLVERINES” and hang up.

With enough civil disobedience calls like that, the may be forced to take their ‘create a rat’ program back to the corpse of the DDR where it belongs.

So… do you think it is rather suspicious when you see a 400 pound woman buying twinkies, or when a man in lee jeans and a carhart flannel buying toilet paper… what about when a 78 year old lady is buying depends (what can she hide in those????). Watch out for those who have no teeth.. potential terrorists!!! I saw a woman the other day… she was probably about 6 feet tall and weighed at the most 100 pounds. She had on lots of black eyeliner and black lipstick. She wore hideously tight stretch pants and had a black studded jacket. She walked at least 10 feet behind her large “Harley” master… yeah…. Lately I’ve really had enough with the self appointed security Nazis wandering around interfering with normal day to day living activities. These people want to play-act living in a fascist state and imagine themselves as some type of security guard on full terrorist alert. I was recently stared at by a bus driver for reaching into my backpack, and I gave my drivers license number t ship a package. I won’t be cooperating anymore.

These announcements by Napolitano is actually irresponsible, because they will add fuel to the fire of this country going nuts. I predict there are going to be injuries and maybe even deaths as a result of situations getting escalated to absurdity.

  • Anonymous

    Whats walmart getting in return?

We now have an answer to what a fascist police state will look like in America – it will be an undeclared fascist, corporate-state, that privatizes civil rights and privacy to corporations for profit. There’s alot of contracts to be doled out and BILLIONS to be made off check points, internet surveillance, and the general “securitization” of everyday public interactions like shopping and traveling. Its only a matter of time before those contractors in Afghanistan are here “policing” our streets, I guess is sometime around 2014.

The pace of turning into a police state has been given steroids the past few months. By summer we can count on hearing the click click click of the cattle cars and the faint stench of burnt flesh wafting in the breeze.

We need a good enemy. A country presenting a real threat, that exhibits all the charachteristic behaviours that define a repressive authoritarian corporatist state. Maybe then, we would make an effort to demonstrate how unlike those guys we are and actually elevate the principles of a country founded upon the ideals of individual freedom and liberty. Without an enemy however, it seems that we just can’t be bothered with trying to live according to or our principles. Fascism is such a lazy way to control the masses. Effective perhaps, in the short run, but lacking any real effort at addressing the complex issues confronting any effort to create an educated, informed, healthy and happy populace. Instead, they just retreat into the simplistic invocation of fear and the drama of emotionalism over reason.

Walmart has joined the “police state” and, apparently, has volunteered to help enforce the paranoia. Shopped there a few days ago, they sealed off all self serving credit card machines to force customers to submit their cards with license ID for inspection. On the way out the door security stared at me like he just spotted a terrorist he demanded my receipt and inspected my cart. Of course I filed complaint with their management that in many years of shopping they never did this. So reading this post things are adding up that Walmart is one of the top democracy hating corporates actively engaged with supporting and promoting fascism.
They will not make another dime off me!

Where is the sign with the picture of big brother? Is this the same as all the color alerts that Bush kept coming. He did it each time he was in trouble politically. To take our minds off what he was really doing. Remember the shredding of the Constitution, and our rights etc. When there was grumbling, the color code would go up a notch.

Now instead of big brother, we get to see the face of Homeland Security. Our own little big brother. Soon it will be on loud speakers in the streets and parks and homes. And the last thing on TV at night. We have seen the enemy. It is us and our fear.

We are not the home of the free or the brave. We are a collection of paranoid people with the impetus supplied by our own government. Fear makes money. Fear+Capitalism.

    Greetings,

Wanna hear something funny? I have a commercial drivers license though I do not drive for a living. Anyway, I was chagrined to discover that the State had revoked my commercial license because I had not returned a Homeland Security Questionnaire.

Because I can legally sit myself behind the wheel of a large truck, DHS wanted to know whether or not I had ever been convicted of any felony terrorism charges or felony murder and some other questions of that nature. There were boxes to check.

This really made no sense to me as the government expected me to inform on myself (A Scanner Darkly) as a precondition to having a driver’s license. What convicted terrorist, now in the process of planning some new terrorist event involving a truck, would in any universe, turn himself in? Shouldn’t these geniuses know whether or not I’m any of those things? Who! Who got paid to think that up?

Listening to Janet while waiting in line is just punishment – enjoy.

It’s more effective to have screens where the volume can be adjusted. Everybody who tries to do so will be reported to the DHS, of course! ‘Good, law abiding citizen’ don’t try to mute the important security messages. The volume control is a trap, don’t fall for it!

I always wished to live in the US, but now i despise it (the government of course, not the land and the people) and i would never contemplate living there anymore. I would probably have more rights in England or France. I would like to thank the richest 1% for destroying the 200+ years of progress that the great (former) Presidents did. “Fatherland Security in 30′s-40′s Germany also used this spy-on-your-neighbor crap, right?”

Yes, indeed. Next step: Block wardens, ‘law abiding’ citizen who stand by the government, no matter what, and who actively spy their neighbors. Coming soon to your quarters, too!

And, no, that’s no joke. If DHS isn’t ashamed of being so openly Orwellian by annoying you with their propaganda everyhwere, they won’t hesitate to create a volunteer organsisation of amateur sleuths, either. And this will have an impact on public discourse, after the first loudmouth citizen have been hauled in for extended interrogation. I still know the stories from my grandmother, they were even afraid to make critical remarks, or, heaven forbid, political jokes to realitives and colleges who were too supportive of the Nazi party. And they would have NEVER voiced dissent to a stranger! That’s how you get a whole population under control with FUD.

Btw, also expect that soon the DHS will voice that not taking part in the measures, and refusing to call observatons in, will make you suspicous, too, as a possible supporter of terrorists! That’s how the Nazis and the Stasi did it, they pushed people into paranoia so that they would stumble over themselves in their eagerness to spy for the state. It can happen in the US!

  • http://twitter.com/graygoods Gray

Don’t forget, in Arizona that’s already reality! May spread to the rest of the US soon.

  • http://twitter.com/graygoods Gray

WalMart prolly is only the start. How do you want to refuse to listen once this is screening everywhere? By holding your ears and singing “lalala, I can’t hear you”? Are you aware how SUSPICIOUS this would look like?

Trying to ignore the shit won’t help you. Only widespread public protests may stop this madness.

    Mexican Immigrants
    Mexican Immigrant lookalikes
anyone with a hint of Mid East genetics
anyone looking like they have a hint of Mid East genetics
Gays, Lesbians and anyone else that doesn’t fit the proscribed appearance binary
Anyone who might be a Sinner.
    Non-Christians.
    You.

Gee, next time I see something suspicious in my neighborhood, I’ll be sure to call the local Wal-Mart manager. I see suspicious stiff every day, like the alien space ships that have been landing in the high school football field over the last ten years that the cops won’t do anything about. Or those damned kids that insist on curing through my yard instead of using the street. There’s that creepy, quiet guy next door, too. He must be up to something.Nobody ever sees him go outside except to get his mail, or to get in his car and go who the heck knows where. That’s really suspicious. Wow, and you should see the strange pod people in Wal-Mart. Where did the fat females get all that pink spandex? Isn’t that some sort of alternate space suit? I see them every time I go to Wal-mart to pick up another roll of tin foil to make hats for me and my cats. I have 200 cats now and they all need hats. Sometimes they chew them and have to be replaced. What’s with cats chewing tinfoil anyway? Isn’t that suspicious? Why won’t the FBI return my calls? Isn’t that suspicious and down right weird? I’m glad I have someone to turn to now that will listen and take me seriously! Thank God Wal-Mart managers are there for me. Now maybe I can get something done about all this suspicious, weird stuff going on in this town!

Sorry to burst your bubble. Many of the detrimental conditions (framework), of which the Bushites took advantage, were created right under Bill Clinton’s nose, if not with his help. Obama’s presidency reminds me a lot of Jimmy Carter’s — nice guys cannot change anything; if they are smart enough/brave enough to stand up for right things (not right-wing things, mind you), they die.

And the only part the U.S. has really played in all this is that its formation as a “free democratic republic,” full of a bunch of uppity-rebel colonists, became a big snag in the plans– a snag that has taken over 200 years to overcome. Of course France’s revolution also caused a problem; but not to worry, we are all pretty much under control now. As the infamous Banker Rothschild suggested long ago, the nation matters not at all if one has control of the money. It is not about nations. It is about money–ALL the money!

If you wish to escape, may I recommend a huge ranch in Paraguay — if you can afford your own private “security” army to fend off the angry natives. Apparently a few folks have already made such plans.

Jessie Ventura had a show that had this story. There are regional groups funded by the government who collect data on all of us. This includes credit cards, banks, store special cards, agriculture, etc. It is a real Stazi type system that is in place already. It started just after Homeland Security was formed. What is even scarier is that they converted closed military bases into basically internment camps like was used for the Japanese during WWII. Most of them have railroads, air strips, the barbed wire is pointing inwards to keep people in, guard towers and they are ready to house who? This is a fact. If you haven’t watched Jessie’s show’s I suggest you do. It is not outlandish things like politicians are lizard people but facts and questions on these serious topics.

If you are unemployed and eligible in Canada you receive about 20% higher maximum benefits from UI, dependant on income. Housing prices are more stable, the banks didn’t get sucked into the credit default swaps and are als o relatively stable, unemployment rate is 7.6 nationally, according to Statistics Canada, health care is universal for 100% of Canadian citizens whether you can pay the premiums (50.00 to 80.00 per month) or not, Canada is facing a budget shortfall of a whopping $3.05-billion CAD.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dana-Seilhan/526832595 Dana Seilhan

Honestly? All that stuff you thought about us standing for freedom and rights was our propaganda at work. We’ve always been repressive, it just wasn’t obvious because the government didn’t necessarily always use guns. Do some research about the Red Scare in the early to mid 1900s, it’s a real eye-opener. We’ve got a new kind of Red Scare these days and the GOP brownshirts who march under that red flag completely miss the irony. Yes I know the administration is Democrat these days but they’re not the ones who set up the DHS in the first place.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dana-Seilhan/526832595 Dana Seilhan

Stalin had to use guns. He didn’t have television and a media monopoly to control people’s thoughts and perspectives the way we do today. Our fascism is sneakier, and uses the weight of public opinion to accomplish what you used to need guns to do to a country.

It’s been going on for a long, long time here. This is nothing new, only a ramping up of what was already here. Of course, the leftists have been screaming about it for years but no one cared til it was affecting them personally in ways they could not conveniently ignore.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dana-Seilhan/526832595 Dana Seilhan

I don’t think we’re predisposed for that on a genetic level. I think the reality is much, much more complex. I mean, if we weren’t predisposed to prefer freedom we wouldn’t have spent two to three million years hunting and gathering in small tribes. There are still forager tribes left in the world–have you *seen* how they live? All our talk of freedom and liberty and rights, and they put us to shame.

It isn’t that we’re human and that humans prefer oppression. It’s that we’re domesticated and oppression is all we know. And if you start arguing with me now about not wanting to go back and live in a cave, you’re just as afflicted as the rest of us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dana-Seilhan/526832595 Dana Seilhan

Mailer never referred to a genetic predisposition, on the contrary. He implies that individuals are willingly giving up some of their freedom and basic rights, in exchange for security.

In American society fear acts as a social cement and cohesion element. Fear of Commies, fear of Secularism, homosexuals, immigrants etc….and now you have decided to fear Arabs & Muslims. In terms of aspects of developmental psychology, fear also serves to control the uncontrollable. The fear notion of a ferocious potential monster can occasion the fear-reduction of the developing individual: the more the individual can perceive situations of helplessness reflectively, the more the idea of an omnipotent monster can block these feelings of helplessness. Tales of foreigners and evil cultures, then, will necessarily reinforce these fears.

Isn’t this what happened in East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down? The secret police exploited the population into spying against each other, thus increasing distrust, paranoia, and silence. These tactics are deplorable, and can easily be misused by bigots, who think that people don’t look “normal.” I am appalled what the Obama administration is falling prey to. He caves into Republican demand for tax cuts, and his stature with a tail between his legs is less comforting. God help us if a Neo-conservative fascist takeover is not in our future? A great movie XIII is a serious study of the very real danger of a fascist governmental coup of America. What is going on? Obama seems to be an appeaser of the Right, while at the same time attacking our civil rights of privacy, undue searches and seizures.

    Greetings,

    Ah yes, what to do?

We see ourselves in events that are not unlike a runaway truck coming down a mountain road. If enough of us stand in the road then we can, by the weight of numbers, bring the truck to a stop but it will crush many of us underneath.

I’ve made arrangements for myself and my family to remove myself from the mountain altogether as I am of the opinion that the truck is unstoppable. Americans are too divided, uneducated and subservient to authority to offer any kind of resistance what-so-ever. Furthermore, with no sense of community, the people will 100% turn on each other the next time some Black Swan event appears that disrupts food or energy.

My advice to everyone would be to downsize, downsize, downsize and get ready for a time when what you need is carried on your back.

This is how China lives. Funny how we’re becoming a police state just like them, when we owe them more money than we can ever pay back. I’m guessing that this is so when China takes us over, they’ll already have assumed control over our population and people will say “oh, this isn’t much different than what we had before when we where ‘America’. “

You are right Walmart always had a security standing by the door but as a matter of policy they “rarely” approached anyone for inspection unless a “bell” rang off or someone was coming in to return an item which was documented. I used to shop with them several times a month for years and never had anyone stop me at the door. Yes, the self serve credit card slide machines were all sealed down with plastic tapes. This means if anyone wants to pay with plastic must surrender it to the cashier with positive ID usually the driver’s license. With Walmart terrible human right, employees, track record and now joining up with TSA to humiliate their customers I am finished with them.

It is terrorist propaganda. Nothing named “homeland security” can be good. There is no tradition in America of describing our country as the Homeland. The Bushes brought that from their grandpa the nazi. It is a German usage that honorable people would not use today because of its clase association with Hitler.

i’ve never stepped foot into that sorry ass excuse for a store. they wanted to open one in my neighborhood, and i did some online research. they lead the numbers in environmental violations, workplace safety violations, anti union tactics, etc. they absolutely decimate local businesses, and cost communities money because their wages are so low, full time workers must supplement their income with social services.
i wouldn’t shop in a walmart if they gave things away.

This will create a public fear, a paranoia among the people. Before long we all will be spying on each other. I agree with reporting suspicious, aondoned packages or such in a public place, but this?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

Yes.. because we’ve had terrorist attacks in Wal-Mart parking lots..

Anyone that doesn’t think Obama and the Dem Leadership is IN ON THE SCAM of turning us into a fascist nation is dead from the neck up.

I just wonder why everyone is content to keep letting things slide until the only solution is a Second Amendment solution. Near 80% wanted a Public Option, we got mandatory insurance. Over 70% want out of Iraq and Afghanistan, we have perpetual war. 90% or more are outraged about being man-handled and irradiated to board a plane, but scanners are rolling out anyway. We have the largest prison population on the planet, EIGHT TIMES the rate of “communist China”.. and now they want to feed propaganda to us at the check-out of one of the only places we can afford to shop, now?

Keep it up. Keep making prisoners and enemies of citizens.. that can’t end badly.

Nah, full body scanners are too expensive and obvious. I’m thinking Minority Report.. though, eye scanners are not a lot better (hardware wise).. what is invisible and tracks everyone? implanted chips. There was a testing of the water a short time ago.. it didn’t go over well, but with the increase in “supervision”, I expect we’ll see a resurgence in the attempt at making this mainstream.

My visa to New Zealand is being jerked around to an untenable state for me, all because the rest of the world dislikes America… I made the mistake of saying “my day to day life won’t be much different than it is here in the U.S.”, and that sealed my fate. … trouble is, my day to day is not like the average “fat, ignorant American”.. but I got screwed anyway.

Too many people in this country are too ignorant for anything to change. over 60% of the people here don’t even know how many STATES they have in their own country. i.g.n.o.r.a.n.t. If that wasn’t bad enough, they are also stupid.. and you can’t cure stupid.

Get your facts straight. The public option failed but insurance is NOT mandatory nor was that even written in the bill. That’s just GOP rhetoric working on their herd who listen to every word they tell them. We are out of Iraq. The last brigade pulled out in April. And we’re set to be out of Afghanistan next year. But that is a complication in itself. Still, there are way less troops in Afghanistan than there were when Bush was in office.

Dems didn’t want the war in Iraq. That was a whole scheme planned by Bush, Cheney and those cronies. They lied to us about WMD’s and now we’re drowning in debt because they wanted blood for oil.

The prison population is due to this “war on drugs” that began with a Republican president. Now prison unions control the government and dictate who stays and who goes. They let sex offenders and real criminals out while keeping pot possessors in.

Dems aren’t “in on the scam” to turn us fascist. They’re too pussy to take a stand to turn it around because Corporations have the government by the balls.

Yep, if you think about how much the government and business know about you via the Internet, it’s scary. And when Julian Assange of Wikileaks went to the London police on his own last night, he was instead arrested and is being held without bond on alleged improper sexual contact with two women.

Although those charges were previously heard and dropped in Sweden, they are now being revisited. I’m not saying that they couldn’t be true, it’s just suspicious timing.

And now Master Card, Visa, and Paypal will not process any donations going for Julian’s defense, and the court will allow anyone to post any bail for him although several prominent newspaper and others have tried to do so. The United States is also trying to figure out what they could possibly charge him with- even though Julian met with State Department officials prior to the release to redact names that might cause harm.

Julian believes that values that must represent humanity — truth, creativity, love — are overwhelmed and eventually destroyed by institutional hierarchies

Thinking and knowing are two different things. I’ve actually lived in Canada. I’ve waited in months for surgery. My Grandmother broke her hip. They told my father she would have to go home as they didn’t have a bed for her (they toss the old in the trash), so he called the Washington state ambulance service. Payed the New Westminister Ambulance service a kings ransom to driver her to the border, the U.S. ambulance picked her up and she was in surgery in two hours.

Now we have money so we could get that done, but I have sat in a Universal healthcare bed and it’s not as cozy a Mr. Moore, who I think is a fine film maker but not a documentarian, and it sucked.

The banks own Canada, they have since I was a child. You TD Ameri-trade, Waterhouse etc, that’s Toronto Dominian, they own tons of this country too.

Canada has no national debt of any significance.

What exactly IT is I am not sure, but I do know that when California is boiling Vancouver will be nice and warm.

Plus the pot is really fricken good. So I guess is IT better there is a matter of taste.

It was really a baited question tbh.

I’ll personally survive the FEMA camps a lot longer in Canada I am sure. But I have friends there who will hide me.

We have LONG been the most surveilled society on the planet. The Soviets used to laugh at the irony of it. And all of this “watch for strangers and strange things” stuff was in play in WWII and the Cold War, as well; and has been the basis of anti-crime neighborhood watch programs since their inception a few decades ago. I don’t object to citizens keeping an eye on their community for happenings that seem out of place. What I do object to is warrantless searches by local, state, and federal personnel, including so-called “sneak-and-peek” searches, the out-of-control TSA, the UnPatriot Act, ad nauseum — the all but complete erosion of our Fourth Amendment protections — and the tame G-D sheep who are teaching their kids, our future voters and powerbrokers, that upholding the Fourth Amendment isn’t important.

Of course she’d choose Walmart. With the broad base of customers, there will be plenty of people who “look” different. Each report about something/someone strange can then be counted as an investigation/prevention of a terrorist activity. Buying toys for your kids and Asian – bingo you can be reported. It’s a DHS dream come true – lots of calls, lots of reports, very very very tiny risk involved but so much easier than really doing the hard work to find terrorists. As everyone knows, the Post Office already does the DHS legwork. Why not Walmart?

    1) The public option was sold out to insurance and big pharma in a series of not so secret meetings that have been documented and have been in the public sphere for about 2 years now.

    2) The personal mandate for insurance remains once the health care provisions kick in in 2012-2013.

    3) 50 thousand “non combat” troops (who have seen more combat in fallujah and other Iraqi locations) have remained behind, along with 70 thousand Blackwater type mercenaries on the dole of the US gov through no bid contracts.

    4) Afghanistan has been pushed to 2014 at the earliest.

    5) The Dems voted for war, voted to supply the war with cash, and continue to do to this day. They were party to the entire thing. They caved utterly.

    6) Both parties are owned utterly by corporate cash, the political elite of the nation are total monied interests, in the top 2% of the populace and often from dynastic industrial or political families.

There are no Dems and Repubs. There’s only rich and poor.

I am aware of the insurance and pharmaceutical schemes. They are the ones that lobbied hard to get the public option to fail. However, that does not mean Americans are going to be forced to sign up for this type of health care. Those who cannot afford typical plans can still apply for Medicaid. Also, there will be federal subsidies to lower cost for those who can’t pay the high premiums.

There are non combat troops left behind in Iraq that will over time come back home. They are there for security purposes. What I don’t like is Blackwater being there. They are putting the military in danger.

Afghanistan will get pushed back. Like I said, there are complications in Afghanistan. However, Obama will still be lowering the amount of soldiers being sent over to Afghanistan. If you want my opinion on this, we won’t be leaving Afghanistan in 2014 or anytime after.

We all know both parties are rewarded by Corporations. That is not something to be debated. But it’s not as black and white as you believe it to be. If anything, the democratic party is the lesser of two evils. At least many still fight against what Republicans are so willing to take away from us.

I just had a great idea. While you’re in line, if you have to watch the video, tell the cashier that you want to see the manager. When the manager shows up, tell the manager that you time having to watch the Nazi video has just cost you $100.00 of your time, because that’s what you charge for watching Nazi videos telling you to spy on other customers. If you don’t get paid, you won’t, then tell the cashier that you don’t want the merchandise. Then, walk out. A few times of this from a few thousand customers and there will be no more Nazi Fatherland Security videos.

The personal mandate will still be in effect. Subsidies are irrelevant to the point of their being a personal mandate. Yes, there will be.

The “non-combat” troops that are still seeing combat have merely been redesignated as “trainers” or “consultants”. It’s a fun new label that is also largely irrelevant to the reality on the ground. The US government is PAYING to have mercenaries there. The US is attempting to outsource warfare to the private sector. That worked out well for Rome too.

Afghanistan has already been pushed back to 2014. Hell, even the Canadians are staying till then at the behest of NATO. We won’t be leaving Afghanistan ever, it just happens to be centrally located to a nexus of oil pipelines being built to western Europe.

The Democratic party is the lesser of two evils in only one way: as the nation slides ever rightward, they stay 1 bare rung above the GOP in terms of evil. Even if both are drowning in the sewage of corruption, the Dems remain 1 or 2 inches above the GOP in the fetid ichor. Sure, you can technically say they are “better”, but wtf is the point when both of them are over their heads in shit.

  • http://twitter.com/victoria_29 victoria_29

Obviously you are a progressive that has difficulty with reading comprehension. Insurance is MANDATORY-either you have it or you will be fined & possibly imprisoned. Maybe you should learn to read before you decide to run your mouth about something you are quite clearly uneducated about.

If you want to make hometowns safe, start by making children feel safer in schools, and not be terrified of bullies. Then move on to making sure that your own “efforts to make us safe” aren’t treading on our freedoms, and isn’t instead asking us to trade a little of our freedom for a little more security.

Yeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaa! I feel like Slim Pickins riding that nuke right into the ground.

Haha thank you for that laugh. As much as I appreciate the fact you think you know me, I’d suggest you shut your mouth.

“Under the new law, most individuals who can afford it will be required to obtain basic health insurance coverage or pay a fee to help offset the costs of caring for uninsured Americans. If affordable coverage is not available to an individual, he or she will be eligible for an exemption. Effective January 1, 2014.”

Most Americans are eligible for Medicaid or are already enrolled. If you are a medicaid subscriber, you don’t need to change your health care plan. If you don’t have adequate health care, you may get fined 2.5% of modified adjusted gross income for the year; however I doubt that will actually be enforced and most will be exempted and encouraged to become a medicaid patient. You will NOT be jailed! That is rubbish.

As far as Mandatory is concerned, I think that is a highly negative word to apply to this health care plan and I refuse to acknowledge it. This whole law is being implemented to HELP Americans, which Insurance companies don’t want to do. Most Americans that don’t have health care, don’t have it because they either a) can’t afford it, b) were dropped because of pre-conditions, or c) dropped due to becoming a health “liability.” This is rolling out slowly to encourage Americans who can’t afford insurance or pay out of pocket for procedures and expensive brand medications. Everyone should have access to proper health care and this is what this law is- Accessible, affordable health care. Plus, it’s not just buy one health plan or ELSE. It’s giving Americans options of how to obtain care for basic health prevention, maintenance, and procedures. This law is also giving you some right to what all government workers get as far as health insurance goes- AFFORDABLE INSURANCE.

So next time you try to tell me I fail at reading comprehension, maybe you should look at yourself.

I am posting this as an afterthought, after posting my previous comment. You know: that woman warning me to report “something suspicious” and “suspicious activity” scares me more then ANY potential thought of a terrorist attack while I’m out shopping.

Maybe it’s because I have never seen a taliban blowing themselves up in a walmart before…? I never had a plane flown at me while doing my Christmas shopping? (okay, those comments were in bad taste, but I hope it gets a point across).

Besides: as a metalhead, I would probably be one of “those suspicious people” to SOMEONE. I mean a guy with long hair, dressed all in black… c’mon now. And I am such an “evil terrorist” that I recently helped a couple of elderly people (who are complete strangers to me) shovel their blasted sidewalk :/

It’s nice to know I could be reported/arrested/possibly detained based entirely on my looks :/

That is why dimwits join the service. They don’t have to make decisions about wearing clothes, their hair, they have people to blow bugles in the morning, food is dispensed at the same time of day, all vehicles are the same color, type, same oil filter, etc.

My immediate family spans both continents so I know of what I speak.
The premier bank in Canada is RBC. Its about 20 bigger than TD and the largest Canadian company.TD is a close second after all of its US and international mergers over the past twenty years.
As for surgery wait times…if your surgery was of an emergency nature you would have received prompt treatment. Elective surgery is a different story. But you can have socialist health care, albeit with higher taxes, with a guarantee of coverage and high quality treatment with wait times, or pure capitalist health care with a guarantee of swift and excellent quality treatment exactly when you want it, but at a premium that many cannot afford, and with really terrible choices of excessively expensive insurance coverage, a well-established fact. I would most certainly choose the former every time. As for the rest, its a toss-up. Canada’s current minority government is unfortunately extremely right-wing authoritarian, run by Christian fundamentalists with close ties to top right-wing US evangelicals including Focus on the Family and very friendly with Rupert Murdoch. But it is a multi-party parliamentary system and they are blessedly held in check for the time being. I stand by my claim that one is currently better off living in Canada at present. Consider that the Economist rates three major Canadian cites to be in the top ten in the world in 2010 for livability, factoring things like gun crimes, cost of living and all the various metrics.

Hey, I see that in a Walmart and I’ll put one of those smiley face bags over it. Down with BIG SISTER!

They only seek to propagate fear and mistrust of our neighbors. They don’t want us banning together as We The People and defeating them.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

You are absolutely correct. I found that people are somewhat surprised about these bizarre legal actions from Sweden, for example, but these Nordic countries also have very powerful conservative factions. Racism and nationalism is a very significant political wedge issue there as well, as it is across Europe and elsewhere.
But if you want to rate livability by that metric, I can assure you that Canada is nowhere near the authoritarian security state environment that the US now is. Simply no comparison. No Canadian airport fiddles with your junk or looks at your bare ass or makes you take off articles of clothing at airport gates, other than in exceptional and isolated instances.
If you throw things in public the cops may beat you or taze you to death but that is also isolated so far.
I fully concur that this Orwellian nightmare has exploded worldwide, though. It truly has. Cops have gone really ugly and fearsome even in small communities where even there they have this high-tech paramilitary equipment and personnel. Its not pretty.

I aint arguing with you man. I grew up in BC, trust me we bitched about the same shit in Canada we bitch about here.

No Canadian would ever be left on the curb outside an emergency. You are correct the sick aren’t tossed out. But there are plenty of homeless in Vancouver and I think like east Van is now the capital of junky homeless in all of north america. We also protested, we didn’t sit around bitching. Canadians are pretty active.

And I do keep a home in Vancouver, this place goes up in flames…

Honestly man I guess you just come across more negative than I do and that’s kinda scary. I don’t think it’s done yet.

Be surprised what one man can do. Pretty sure Einstein figured out how the universe worked in some back room clerks office, not a University or Corporation.

I don’t think this is over by a long shot, I think it’s just finally getting started. This shit has been going on forever, long before today’s empires existed.

But when I was a kid it was the french Canadians, now it’s the Christians, it’s always been walking that edge.

If I was going to raise kids I would do what my dad did, move them to Canada after they were born here.

Yeah, I admit I am anything but optimistic.
But I am guardedly optimistic about the potential of the potential of Wikileaks and their kind. I think its mighty fine to strip away the pretenses that any of us live in a “democracy”, a myth that the media continues to perpetuate. I really hope that some future leaks take a massive dump right in the middle of a major network anchor desk obliterating once and for all the patently absurd “liberal media” meme that has enjoyed such traction for the past 30 years.
I heard tonight there are now 700 mirror sites. I seriously wonder if this thing is unstoppable. What are they going to do, shut down the internet, on which they are reliable for banking, infrastructure, the military, the government? That won’t happen.
I wish Wikileaks all the success in the world.

I speak as an expat in the UK. What has become clear to me is that there are different ways to suppress. The US methods are now the most obvious, but trying to escape – at least, to the western capitalistic world – isn’t the panacea one might hope. Here, the banks have far more control than in the US. You cannot cash a check (cheque) unless you have a bank account – you can’t even take it to the bank it’s drawn on. Getting a bank account is an intrusive process. Checks are always held by banks for a few days, and you know who gets the float.

The scanners are coming over here, too. You can expect they’ll hit Canada. There’s too much money to be made in them for it not to happen. The suppression techniques used in one country, such as intrusive body searches without cause, are rapidly picked up by others. For each area in which things seem freer in one place, there’s a lack in another. But each is catching up to the others. The UK is getting tasers and cops are more and more armed with guns. In Germany, buying herbs from America is likely to cause you to receive a drug charge, because most are classed as drugs. It’s happening everywhere.

Take it one step further.. create a website called mindyourownbusiness.com, all those that dont want big bro/sis in your walmart, post a comment, have a counter or something on the website to show the support, get the word out on facebook and any other community you are apart of, also have all the walmart phone numbers listed on this site so you can call your walmart and let them know you wont be shopping there anymore, now get a group of people together that do just what you said Thomas, the only way walmart will keep this from happening is if their bottom line is affected for the long term. How does that happen? Stop shopping there.

It wasn’t the first Apple Computer commercial. It WAS the first Macintosh commercial, but Apple made other computers before the Mac, and advertised them. It was probably the most remembered commercial of the 20th century.

There’s two things we can do, everybody: 1) Stop shopping at Wal-mart; 2) Sue the $!&@ out of Walmart and any employees for false arrest/detention, if such happens to you (God forbid).
