Exclusive: Private sector attacks on WikiLeaks set ‘scary precedent,’ corporate whistleblower declares

Wendell Potter, the former communications chief for health insurer Cigna who turned whistleblower and exposed the insurance industry’s most deceptive practices, has come out in defense of secrets outlet WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange.

In an interview with Raw Story on Monday night and Wednesday afternoon, Potter said he certainly finds similarities to the Pentagon Papers released by Daniel Ellsberg during the Vietnam War.

“Well, it takes me back,” he said. “The Nixon Administration came after Ellsberg and tried to shut it all down and tried to intimidate the news media. There are a lot of parallels here.”

Potter called the freezing of WikiLeaks accounts in recent days by corporations such as MasterCard, VISA, Amazon and PayPal – Amazon after calls from US senators including the chair of the homeland security committee Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and PayPal at the request of the US State Department – “a disturbing trend.”

“This kind of action, this kind of involvement is dangerous,” he warned. “What’s most important is freedom of information. So I think this is a disturbing trend.”

Potter, who is currently a senior fellow on health care for the Center for Media and Democracy and author of the newly released book Deadly Spin, which details his transformation from health insurance spinmeister to whistleblower, said that he understands concerns about the possibility of sensitive documents being released.

But he pointed out that “a lot of this information that is now public is important for the public to know.”

Asked to respond to claims by some members of the Obama administration and the news media that the WikiLeaks documents have revealed nothing of importance, Potter called that “nonsense.”

“I think that’s entirely wrong,” he said.

“If they were revealing nothing of importance,” he explained, “why would the media pay attention to it at all? Why would The New York Times be writing stories about it?”

Potter added, “It is information that has not been publicly disclosed before, so I think that’s nonsense.”

He also said that the denial of service attacks to shut down WikiLeaks and federal government and corporate actions to squelch WikiLeaks’ hosting and funding sets a “very scary precedent” for the future of free speech on the Internet.

“Clearly what’s at stake is whether or not the Internet really can become the medium that serves the public good and lives up to its potential,” Potter said.

“If it is shut down in ways that we’re seeing right now,” he cautioned. “I think that Americans should be very alarmed.”

He added, “And so should the rest of the world for that matter.”

As for calls to arrest Assange, or even to assassinate him, over the disclosure of WikiLeaks documents, which is separate from allegations of sexual misconduct for which Assange is ostensibly now in custody, Potter also strongly disagrees and underscored the value of his work.

“In terms of what he’s doing to make public documents available, it serves a purpose,” he noted. “And if The New York Times and other publications are publishing them and we’re learning from them, I think that’s important and I don’t think he should be arrested [for that].”

Potter said he wouldn’t necessarily support the release of every detail that’s been disclosed by the leaks and acknowledged that governments may have some secrets better left unrevealed.

On the other hand, he said, “It’s important for there to be freedom of information. In my view, that’s paramount.”

He also said the controversy over WikiLeaks raises a vital question for our democracy, one he believes that warrants a vigorous national discourse.

“We really ultimately need to have a conversation about how much all this is really necessary. What are we really accomplishing by all the secrecy and all that’s going on that is not publicly disclosed?”

[Editor’s note: Look for more from our extended interview with whistleblower Wendell Potter next week, including new revelations about his national apology to documentary filmmaker Michael Moore for being involved in the smear campaign against “Sicko,” Potter’s shocking account of manipulating the news media over the years, and how he would encourage other potential whistleblowers to step forward.]

Truth teller! Wendell Potter deserves the Medal of Freedom, and should be Majority Leader in the Senate!

  • Where goeth sanity?

I, personally, see Assange as The Everyman, and the corporations attacking him as the cockraoches who scurry when the light is turned on.

We must push back against this type of “corpgov” action by large corporations that seek to quash free speech. These weasel corporations need to understand they’re pissing off their customer base when they bend to guys like Lieberman. He’s the one who should be investigated, not the NYT.
    Free Julian Assange! See this:

If only wikileaks had taken right wing positions on everything, it would have been safe. Now the Freedom Loving Republican Party of America is willing to openly call for a person’s death, and supposedly Open Web advocates like Twitter are willing to censor and basically corall discussion. Remember this is the same twitter that was advertised as the Iranian Student Movements Savior.

If Wiki is “revealing nothing of importance”, then, WHY is the US government and every major corporation even pursuing him????? They’re sort of playing the ol’ “elephant in the room” trick now.

    Disturbing Trend is an understatment:
    1. The initial official reaction was “nothing new”, designed to diminish the value of the information.
    2. The next stage was to develop outrage about the mere fact that the information was released. Nothing was denied, not one word was used to qualify the information or create an alternative context for any situations. The documents were effectively given an improbably high level of authenticity.
    3. Then followed the hate campaign. General all-out war on Wikileaks. While this is going on, the incredible slopfest which permitted the accessing and distribution of American classified documents is getting no level of attention. The people who should have been monitoring security issues haven’t been charged with jaywalking.

The government loves to mark stuff as “classified.” It’s an essential part of Washington intrigue that makes people with clearance feel important. The problem is, all those people work for the taxpayers. We’re their bosses. Our elected representatives supposedly act in our stead, but what is classified and what isn’t gets caught up in party politics, so the taxpayers lose their right to know.

A classic example is Sibel Edmonds, an FBI translator who came upon “classified information” that Turkish businessmen were bribing Congressmen. The Bush administration invoked something called “state secrets privilege,” and Edmonds was threatened with prosecution if she spoke out. She also lost her job. If WikiLeaks had been around at the time, it couldn’t have happened.

What happened to the promise about Government being more transparent? I see the opposite happening. And isn’t it fishy that some woman, tied with the CIA, claims rape?

this guy has inadvertently exposed the whole ‘new world order’, corporate elite cabal. besides his actual leaks, we are seeing a concerted, international effort by world leaders to bring him down, as he exposes their complicity in corruption and deception. europe, the middle east, america, etc. the curtain is being lifted, and these maggots are terrified that people will see the scope of their mayhem, and the interconnectedness of it all.

good for him, but like warren beatty’s character in ‘the parallax view’, i’m afraid he doesn’t stand a chance.

these companies have been read the riot act by the puppeteers, and they will fall in line or else.

Pay attention to your timeline. It’s NOT the feds who are lifting a finger to go after him, because they KNOW he’s not doing anything illegal. It’s NOT illegal to publish this info. It’s NOT illegal to be in possession of it, either. It’s also NOT treason when the guy in question is NOT an American citizen. It’s not the state dept that is actively going after him, even though it’s THEIR info that’s been spilled.

It’s BOA. Bank of America. Notice that Julian was out and about until he said that he had gigs of files of THEIRS. Suddenly, there are charges pending, there is a “hold for questioning” but no arrest warrant issued, and now he’s in jail. NO charges have been filed, but the man in under arrest.

It’s not the political stuff, it’s the CORRUPTION stuff. It’s the bankers having it on files as to WHICH politicians they have bought off, whose palms they have greased, where they have thrown illegal money, what illegal deals they are making, who they are screwing. IT’S ALL ABOUT MONEY. If Julian is killed, it won’t be a gov’t hit man that does it. It will be a big money scum bag. Mark my words, this is a big money doing.

All the more reason why I want ALL the shit to hit the proverbial fan. I can’t STAND huge money.

I just canclled my Amazon and Paypal account as well. It’s an outrage that these private companies are breaching their own policy to attack a journalistic organization that has committed no crime. And at the bidding of that pathetic self-serving jackass Joe Lieberman? I gave them a piece of my mind, and will not be using them in the future.

It is becoming clear how seemingly innocent power players like Visa and Mastercard, fear the truth as if they have something to hide. Are they afraid whistleblowers in their own organizations will disclose the same type of corruption that seems almost ready to be disclosed of Bank of America? Amazon was the real suprise to me, until it was revealed that Joe Lieberman had his arm-breaking tactics in the shadows. Recently Keith Olbermann gave Obama a tongue lashing, and now, I’m waiting for Olbermann to set his target on Lierbermann with his abuse of power over Homeland Security. I can hardly wait, until Olbermann’s acid tongue goes after the sob now wanting the the New York Times to be investigated. What is Lierberman afraid will be disclosed by these secret cables anyway?

We are suffering terrorist attacks, and they are from our corporations and our government. Financial institutions have made an illegal attack on Assange, and who will discipline them? They own their regulators. They seek to set us up to be scared to say anything for fear of the banking world coming down on us.I expect anyone identified as opposing them will lose points off their credit score.

What is interesting is that the SCrOTUS Citizens United ruling basically said that money = speech, and free speech should not be suppressed. This opened the coffers of corporations to spend as much money as they wanted to, to influence American elections, in many cases with out and out lies.

Fast forward about a month and you have corporations suppressing peoples free speech rights by not allowing them to spend THEIR money (AKA free speech in SCrOTUS’s eyes) to support an organization that is spreading the TRUTH!

    Seriously WTF?

This not only an issue of free speech and unfettered access to the truth, but Democracy. And these are the reasons that Wikileaks is being persecuted. This corrupt government like all corrupt governments does whatever they can to hide truth. A government is only as open as they are forced to be. No government plays by rules unless a vigilant and free press along with citizens, hold their feet to the fire.

Governments do not want us to know what they do in our name. Secrecy is the rooted desire of all country’s. And openness is the hobgoblin of our country. We are not an open society. We tremble on the brink of fascism. WE are only marginally free, and the government can take it away anytime they want. Either gradually or quickly as under Bush, and sustained under Obama. So if we are not prepared to exercise our rights, our voices and our demonstrations against these suppression’s, than we will go down quietly and without a fight.

This is what they want. That we allow them to take our rights and Democracy quietly.

Anyone which can say we have a democracy in this country today , does not have a clue what it means.
Obama’s Change and transparent government has turned out to be one of his lines of BS.

““Well, it takes me back,” he said. “The Nixon Administration came after Ellsberg and tried to shut it all down and tried to intimidate the news media. There are a lot of parallels here.””

The problem is that, 40 years later, the ‘news media’ is nothing more than the spinmeister (to use their own term) for the corporate government. No need to intimidate them, they’re only happy to oblige and immediately engage in the required propaganda campaign.

This is a jingoistic society. The idiots hear jingo and repeat them ad nauseum not putting any thought into what they’re saying or having a clue as to what what they’re saying, simply repeating what they hear, like a parrot. So, if they hear that this is a democracy, by golly, that’s what they’re going to repeat. That’s all there is to it.

Might I add or Visa, PayPal/Ebay and Amazon… I’ve dumped most of these and cutting back on Visa

It is interesting to note that these cables that “don’t have anything of interest” in them are generating quite a bit more “push back” than the Iraq or Afghanistan documents. Telling how Visa/MC/PayPal etc suddenly have all kinds of reason to dump WikiLeaks, while organizations involved in kidnapping, torture, mass murder, etc get a pass.

Potter is a national hero, not that you hear about it much in the “media.” Assange is a planetary hero, same problem. If you like having a nice reputation, don’t fool around with things like truth.

  • Anonymous

What scares me is that the news media in the 70s could whip the news media of today up one side and down the other. Now it just takes a call from some Joe “Lieber”man flunky to get the news media in a flummox and the corporate toads’ collective knickers in a knot. Forget Nixon’s thugs who were actually tough. All it takes now is DroopyDog.

Wendell Potter is a welcome breath of fresh air who has been able to point out what’s obvious but ignored by the media for the most part. No one who watches Fox has any idea who Wendell Potter is. He is Wikileaks, and Wikileaks is him. They just ignore him because he didn’t get involved with two Swedish women.

When you think about all of the shit that’s been going on, in health care, war, the country’s financial structure, local political shenanigans, and all of the people involved therein, there are thousands of people who are watching Mr Potter and Mr Assange who may also decide to reveal secrets that need to be aired. I hope that this is just the beginning of that process. Let loose the dogs of war, and cry havoc.

Unless you get a call from a staffer working on the Committee for Homeland Security…fuck Lieberman.

Actually, just this week I wrapped up my coursework for my graduate degree in English literary studies; since you brought the subject up, I specialize in contemporary (post-Marxist) theory and contemporary textual studies. I don’t consider myself uneducated. You would do well to refrain from making snap judgments about people on the internet; it damages your cause, even if it is simply trolling. Skilled trolls know better.

First, I want to distinguish between liberalism and leftism. Liberals do nothing to alter the basic socioeconomic reality; leftists, on the other hand, are committed to making socialism happen. Second, I acknowledge that liberals (not leftists) and conservatives are, on a very basic ideological level, more or less representative of the two poles that constitute the binary logic of capital (which always gives the appearance of choice, but which nevertheless offers only ultimatums, as in electoral politics). Even the ultra-right and the ultra-left share a history of common strategies, which the new left of the twenty-first century is coming to terms with. Today, however, we know that the old tactics no longer work, and the only people employing authoritarianism today are those in power. Although liberals wind up inadvertently sustaining the status quo–i.e. leftists are rallying to support WikiLeaks and liberals are not because they can’t imagine political activity outside of the comfort of an armchair–only conservatism contains the large bloc of people who unapologetically support police state and totalitarian tactics of the kind that have resulted in our permanent foreign wars, the cyberattacks on WL, the persistent calls for outlawing WL and murdering Assange, etc. So I acknowledge that to be conservative does not necessarily entail totalitarian logic, just as a few libertarians and conservatives have stood up in support of WL and the freedom of the press. In that respect, there is common ground in supporting WL for both the left and the right. However, the WL agenda is decidedly leftist, as it reveals the widespread criminality of the world’s governments, and especially our own, with the result that U.S. imperialism has been concretely, irreducibly exposed. This is a leftist maneuver.

So, as private citizens corporations can choose not to do business with human citizens (or groups of individual human citizens or non citizens), just as individuals can choose not to do business with a corporation.

Yet, somehow that relationship isn’t quite equitable. Go figure.

Something is wrong when one citizen’s “Free Speech” has more weight in our society than the Free Speech of another citizen, not by virtue of communication, debate, and rationed decision but by law.

  • Anonymous

You assume that they are in fact, different. The overlap at this point between the government, corporations (and both of their fronts, organized religion) is very much almost complete.

  • Anonymous

Um, it’s just as likely to go the other way, too. Take a look at the board members of the few corporations that own the major news conglomerations. And with whom the socialize, and to whom they donate.

After the media onslaught which brought us the Iraq war, as every major media outlet joined the bandwagon, I think, as Mr. Potter does, that the organized attack on the Wikileaks websites, it’s founder, and any one reading the cables, is too Orwellian. As readers interested in what happens in the world, I think that these documents provide good insight into the workings of many governments, not just our own. Mr. Assange has peeled a layer of duplicity from the diplomatic hypocrisy which we call international politics. There were too many people with access to this information to account for it’s ‘top secret’ designation. If anyone’s to blame it is the people in charge of their security.
