Leaked e-mail shows Fox boss tried to slant ‘news’ programs

The Washington, DC managing editor at Fox News appears to be caught red-handed in the art of spinning.

As the health care debate was reaching a high point last year, a leaked e-mail shows Bill Sammon asked his news department to refer to the public option as the “government run option.”

Later that evening, Fox News flagship news program, Special Report with Bret Baier, used the very phrase Sammon had requested.

The e-mail, obtained by the liberal watchdog Media Matters, indicates that Sammon sent the request after Republican pollster Frank Luntz said that polls show the “government option” was opposed by the public.

According to the report at Media Matters, in August of 2009 after Fox News’ Sean Hannity used the term “public option,” Luntz encouraged him to say “government option” instead.

“If you call it a ‘public option,’ the American people are split,” Luntz said. “If you call it the ‘government option,’ the public is overwhelmingly against it.”

“It’s a great point, and from now on, I’m going to call it the government option,” Hannity replied.

Luntz also claimed that the “government option” would be “sponsored by the government.” In fact, the proposed public option bills would have funded the program with the fees paid by those who enrolled in it.

Only a day before Sammon sent the e-mail, Brett Baier had referred to the “public option” as well as the “government-run option.”

An e-mail titled “friendly reminder: let’s not slip back into calling it the ‘public option’” was sent to Baier and other Fox News reporters the next morning.

“Please use the term ‘government-run health insurance’ or, when brevity is a concern, ‘government option,’ whenever possible,” Sammon wrote.

“When it is necessary to use the term ‘public option” (which is, after all, firmly ensconced in the nation’s lexicon), use the qualifier ‘so-called,’ as in ‘the so-called public option,’” he continued.

“Here’s another way to phrase it: ‘The public option, which is the government-run plan,’” Sammon said.

That night, Baier and Fox News reporter Jim Angle followed Sammon’s script. Baier referred to the public option as “government-run health insurance” and “government-run health insurance option.”

Angle called the proposed program “a government insurance plan, the so-called public option” and “a government insurance option.”

Fox News has repeatedly said that Special Report with Bret Baier is an objective news program.

“Fox argues that its news hours — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays — are objective,” The New York Times reported. Other hours of the day feature opinion shows like Glenn Beck and Hannity.

“The average consumer certainly knows the difference between the A section of the newspaper and the editorial page,” Michael Clemente, the channel’s senior vice president for news, was quoted as saying.

The Daily Beast‘s Howard Kurtz asked Sammon to comment on the leaked e-mail.

“Sammon said in an interview that the term ‘public option’ ‘is a vague, bland, undescriptive phrase,’ and that after all, ‘who would be against a public park?’” Kurtz wrote. “The phrase ‘government-run plan,’ he said, is ‘a more neutral term,’ and was used just last week by a New York Times columnist.”

“I have no idea what the Republicans were pushing or not. It’s simply an accurate, fair, objective term,” Sammon said.

Prior to becoming Fox News’ Washington managing editor, Sammon was the White House correspondent for The Washington Times where he was often thought of as President George W. Bush’s favorite reporter.

“Six-foot-seven inch Bill Sammon–nicknamed ‘Superstretch’ by President Bush–enjoys more access to the commander-in-chief than any other journalist,” Sammon’s bio bragged. “Sammon has spent hours with Bush in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One–even in the President’s sprawling Texas ranch. As Senior White House Correspondent for the Washington Examiner, Bill Sammon travels with Bush wherever he goes and was with him on September 11, when his presidency was utterly transformed by the terrorist attacks.”

In October, sources told Media Matters that since joining Fox News, Sammon’s pressure to “distort” and “slant news” had made some in the newsroom uncomfortable.

“Since Bill Sammon assumed the role of Washington managing editor and vice president of news at the beginning of the Obama Administration, pressure from Fox management to produce stories that lean toward a conservative agenda, and distort news in some cases, has found its way into coverage, the sources said.”

Text of Sammon’s leaked e-mail follows

Exactly, Fox manipulates the news to favor the republicans. This report should be no surprise.

Your expectations are low. Telling the truth is easy.

Fox has a tough job for themselves, telling all those lies and managing to keep them straight. It takes a lot of creative talent to put together a news show when you have to fill it with lies. I’m sure they have a crack creative writing team that is ready to fabricate Armageddon in 5 minutes if you give them a chance.

From now on, every post I make on any blog is going to start with the words, “God, I hate the Republican leadership.”

FOX PROPAGANDA AS PRACTICED BY RUPERT MURDOCH

“Propaganda must always address itself to the broad masses of the people. (…) All propaganda must be presented in a popular form and must fix its intellectual level so as not to be above the heads of the least intellectual of those to whom it is directed. (…) The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses. The broad masses of the people are not made up of diplomats or professors of public jurisprudence nor simply of persons who are able to form reasoned judgment in given cases, but a vacillating crowd of human children who are constantly wavering between one idea and another. (…) The great majority of a nation is so feminine in its character and outlook that its thought and conduct are ruled by sentiment rather than by sober reasoning. This sentiment, however, is not complex, but simple and consistent. It is not highly differentiated, but has only the negative and positive notions of love and hatred, right and wrong, truth and falsehood.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_propaganda

Today’s deviant breed of morally and socially depraved Republicans are the same kind of people who claimed that they didn’t “know” that Adolph Hitler was an “evil” man or that the “information” that Joseph Goebbels was “crafting” for them was a pack of manipulative “lies”.

From a misguided sense of propriety, Obama feels the need to enable today’s Republican leaders by referring to them as his “colleagues”, but they are every bit as dishonest and corrupt as Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Therefore, I hate them.

Frank Luntz is a sleaze bag. He was instrumental in getting “welfare” renamed “entitlement. It’s like when the United States renamed their “War Dept” to “Dept of Defense” it’s a cute way of making all our military conflicts look like defense rather than offense.

Other spins is “death tax” “anchor babies”. There is a whole list and Frank Luntz has a book filled with spin words. He even has a book of spin words for the Zionists in Israel and a how to fuck over the public debate with con job rhetoric.

Frank Luntz services isn’t about what’s best for this country. He is whore, a slut, he will accept as his clients any john that is looking for ways to screw the public and Fox Fraud News is one of the clients in Frank Luntz’s black book of johns.

Fox “News” is slanted? How could this be? They lie? OMIGOD!

  • Anonymous

This is nothing new for Faux. Murdoch has admitted that Faux lied in 2001-2002 in order to get Ameticans to support the Iraq war. A recent court decision gives Faux the right to lie without a penalty. Additionally, nothing can be done about it.

  • Anonymous

“If you call it a ‘public option,’ the American people are split,” Luntz said. “If you call it the ‘government option,’ the public is overwhelmingly against it.”

Exact same policy, of which most people had no idea what it was about, and by simply changing the name of it, all the morons instantly decide it “must be bad! has the word gubmint init!”.

THIS is why this country is doomed. Too many ignorant, arrogant dipshits having opinions on things they know absolutely nothing about.

This isn’t news. Fox News editors have been telling their newscasters and opinionites what to say for over a decade. I love how the title of this article says Sammon “tried” to slant news. No. He blatantly ordered that they slant news regarding the health care bill.

After everything else Fox has done…this is kind of a letdown. We’re jaded now…we need more explicitly bizarre behavior from Fox before we even notice anything out of the ordinary. Want to shock and surprise me? Hosts screaming for blood…nah…been done. Applauding incredibly corrupt businessmen/politicians…damn…already been done. Exclusively stumping for one party while railing exclusively against the other…crap…outta luck, seen that too.

Hmmm. Well, theres always hope. Maybe one day they’ll hear that some Democrat claimed the sun rose in the morning and set at night…and promptly devote 24/7 coverage in their quest to prove that Dems always lie and the sun actually rises at night. That might be enough to make me notice them being more ignorant than usual.

Rick: “Guess we better shut them down. They’re dangerous.”

“Outfoxed” was based on reports from two former Fox employees. They explained that a dictum comes down from the top every morning about how to present news. When we invaded Iraq, the story on Fox wasn’t about the morality of the invasion, or whether WMD existed…it was about how DEMOCRATS were divided on the subject.

When a Republican is caught doing something crooked or immoral, he’s identified on screen as (name) D (for Democrat)-(state). This has happened far too often for it to be an accident. Later Fox says, “Oh, it was a mistake.”

Unfortunately, pointing out to Fox viewers how slanted and dishonest its coverage is does no good. Fox is preaching to a choir of liberal haters…retirees, rednecks, and ex-military types. Whatever confirms their prejudices against “libs” is music to their ears. It’s the new McCarthyism, except “liberal” has replaced “Communist” as the slander du jour.

Subject: friendly reminder: let’s not slip back into calling it the “news”

    1) Please use the term “most powerful name in news” or, when brevity is no concern, “scaring white people for fun and profit” whenever possible.

    2) When it is necessary to use the term “reality-based world” (which is, after all, firmly ensconced in the nation’s lexicon), use the qualifier “so-called,” as in “the so-called reality based world.”

    3) Here’s another way to phrase it: “objective reality, which is a big government liberal plot to destroy our God-fearing nation.”

    4) When newsmakers and sources use the term “shills for the GOP” in our stories, there’s not a lot we can do about it, since quotes are of course sacrosanct.

    5) Whenever we can slip it in, please refer to the “Tea Party” as the “Fox Party.” We need to be fair and balanced, and that is one perfect way to do it.

Millions of Americans hear this right-wing mendacious propaganda and believe it to be true.

They hear no or minimal push-back from leading figures on the “other side” and the corporate media stays silent.

Sharp people who do see through the lies and propaganda speak out but they get no play or their voices are silenced or muffled by the corporate din.

Allowing a “news” media to control the message undermines the power of the Bully Pulpit. Obama could have campaigned on the public option, changed the dialogue, and forced Congress to answer for any reluctance to offer this to the American people.

Same thing for finance reform, etc. The guy has been AWOL – huddling with his “insiders” and the big money boys from Wall Street. He deserves a primary challenge like no one else in recent history.

There’s more to this than meets the eye going on. If you notice, the uber right-wing has denounced everything governmental, and praised everything private. They want the government out of everything, including restricting business, education, transportation and energy, and in favor of putting all of it into the private sector. In other words, the very society Ayn Rand was so endeared to. Completely eliminate the public sector in favor of the private, creating two separate and distinct classes: the haves and the have nots. Individuals would pay for everything, from the air they breath to the education they get to the roads they drive on, to the private sector. No more social security; no more medicare or medicaid; no more safety nets of any kind. Earn, pay up, or die.

What was Public health care? The only government health care is the VA system, where doctors are government employees. Some countries have that, for example Canada. But that was not proposed for the US system. It was always about who runs the medical INSURANCE. Yes, I would go for a Government Health Insurance “option.” The Government is more efficient at bureaucracy than the private sector. It’s the private sector that likes to expand everything to make more profit, and inefficiency is very profitable!

In general, anyone who is surprised by this is either hopelessly oblivious/disengaged or already brain-damaged beyond hope from watching Fox News already! Still, it’s a useful revelation for the few folks who care about integrity in media and would erroneously still cling to the hopelessly lazy, dull-edged false equivalence “pundits” often draw between Fox and MSNBC. Not only are they extremely careful about factual reportage at MSNBC (with *zero* inclination to just make stuff up and serve it out as factual red meat to masses), but there’s *no* spin-meister/overlord there telling the hosts how to slant their “message” since there is no single, simplistic, lockstep, “Sieg-Hiel” chant going on 24/7 to synchronize their brainwaves and enforce the kind of martial regimentation required at Fox (note their very un-Fox like tendency to speak their minds against the admin when the facts of the day demand it…something never, ever seen at Fox since their message was essentially scripted and approved in realtime by Rove et. al. during whole W deception of the country and subsequent debacle…and now the equally-scripted historical revisionism which is determined to make it all look OK). The effectiveness of Fox would make Goebbels proud of his art.

Fox news is the more outrageous form of propaganda to hit the airwaves in years, and they can give Rush Limbaugh a run for his money, in the vile spewed out in a toxic dump poisoning the American psyche. But don’t let this blatant form of propaganda fool you into thinking that the so called Liberal mainstream media fares any better. The Bush Administration got a 8 year honeymoon, as large corporate owners of the news media essentially gagged the press into giving Bush a free ride. They may seem more subtle, yet, the true tragedy for democracy has been the transformation of the News Business into “Show Business.” Now, we have news anchors strutting their stuff as celebrities hobnobbing with the rich and powerful. Members of the same country clubs, and exclusive societies, they are practically “bed mates.” The news today on all mainstream television networks, has been shortened into soundbites, polished, edited, and slanted in a pro-corporate ideology. It is a sad state of affairs, but Wikileaks is the only source of truth to emerge of late; once the duty of the journalist to discover but now a confirmed failure for the past few years.

Their rantings are not through the roof. Even Spongebob Squarepants gets more viewers than the highest rated Fox show, as does PBS. Fox may be high for cable, but even Katie Couric and the lowest rated news show on the public airwaves gets 2X as many viewers as the best Fox show. And Rush Limbaugh plays with numbers (as does Dr. Laura, O’reilly, etc.). Limbaugh will say he has 10 million listeners. But, that’s cumulative, he’s adding every day’s listeners even though they’re usually the same. And a lot of Fox is a captive audience (i.e. military radio and television). I was at the DMV renewing my license and the television in the waiting area had Fox on it. I asked that it be changed and was told by the manager that he liked Fox, so everyone listened to Fox. He didn’t want liberal crap being played at the DMV. This was a government employee in a government building. I contacted my state rep. Next time I was at the DMV the television was playing game shows.

Fox has the highest ratings, but it’s a narrow plurality, not a majority. Their viewership is loyal, not because Fox presents news objectively or offers insight, but because it doesn’t. If it did, the stereotypical Fox viewer (retired military or retired from a military contractor, pro-gun, anti-gay) would tune out. Fox is simply feeding red meat to a bull…and bulls aren’t all that smart.

I am surprised that some well educated communications lawyer has not found a way to challenge Fox Television Stations Inc. fitness to hold licenses for the Fox OWNED and operated television stations in:

New York City, Secaucus, New Jersey, Los Angeles (2), Chicago, Gary, Indiana, Philadelphia, Dallas – Fort Worth (2), Boston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. (2), Houston, Detroit, Phoenix (2), Tampa – St. Petersburg, Minneapolis – St. Paul (2), Orlando – Daytona Beach (2), Baltimore, Austin, Texas, Memphis, and Ocala – Gainesville, FL.

With all of their issues and blatant misrepresentation of news I’m certain their fitness to hold these valuable licenses in the public trust could be contested. Hurt them where it counts. In their bank account. 27 Television stations are worth a chunk of money.

That case you referenced was about the NETWORK reporting. I am talking about the local Fox owned and operated television stations. I am certain there are many instances where the public trust has been violated on a local level. The network as a content provider is held (or not) to a different standard than the locally owned and operated outlet..

Local television stations and the local (or not) news they broadcast are a completely different issue. There is a way to stop this gross manipulation and misrepresentation of the issues without infringing on Fox News right to free speech.
Think “Death by a thousand paper cuts”. If enough challenges are presented the Fox legal department would be kept busy protecting the mega-phone. The FCC even in it’s weakened form still has a lot of weight at license renewal. They still take seriously “Public Service Responsibility of Licensees:.

Please tell me, then, where Sammon is wrong about this. You can’t. He’s correct. All of this nonsense over a non-story like this. Do you honestly think the term “Public Option” wasn’t methodically chosen (i.e. run by pollsters and focus groups) by those who advocated it because they felt those words would appeal to the masses? Come on…get real. This is so hypocritical. Grow up, lefties. At some point, you’re going to have to come to grips that you’re out of the mainstream.

Fools believe FOX news is the mainstream, and lefties will remain out of that sewer.

Why do the Rightwing conservatives hate the “we the people” part of our government so much? In a democracy, “government run” is by the people, though the Republicans have worked tirelessly to undo that.

    1. I don’t waste time criticizing faux spews.
    2. Until you practice law in the U.S. don’t deign to instruct anyone about
which definition is used. Unless and until adjudicated as unconstitutional,
any definition within a law pertains to and is used within the context of
    that law.
    3. Your patience will be rewarded, only if you are accurate or correct.
    4. Definitions withinb the law count.
    5. Sammons is a shizbott. If he had shit for brains, he would be a silent
    and odorless fart upon discharge!

Get outta here! Fox is too honest to slant the news. Ain’t they supposed to be fair and balanced over there? That’s what I heard.

They are as they purport themselves to be: fair to reactionaries and
    balanced with distasteful lies.

The only people this would come as a surprise to are the folks who actually believe Faux News. But then again, they’ll just dismiss these findings as “left-wing propaganda.”
