‘The Empire’ is ‘being threatened by a slingshot in the form of a computer’

Traditional lines of communication between the people and the press have fallen into such disrepair in America that a whole new approach is necessary to challenge the military-industrial-governmental complex, according to a former CIA analyst sympathetic to WikiLeaks.

“The Fourth Estate is dead,” Ray McGovern, of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, told Raw Story in an exclusive interview. ”The Fourth Estate in his country has been captured by government and corporations, the military-industrial complex, the intelligence apparatus. Captive! So, there is no Fourth Estate.”

McGovern explained that the term the “Fourth Estate,” known today as the news media in the US, was first coined by 18th century British statesman Edmund Burke. Burke is said to have pointed to the balcony in Parliament and lauded the print media of his day for being the safeguards of democracy.

“That was very powerful back then,” McGovern said. “And just a century later you get Tom Paine, James Madison. You know what Thomas Jefferson said? He said if we have to make a choice between having a government and having a press, I’ll go for the press every time. He understood that any government without a free press will resort to despotism.”

McGovern, a CIA analyst for 27 years, whose duties included preparing and briefing the President’s Daily Brief and chairing National Intelligence Estimates, said that he preferred to focus on the First Amendment battle of WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange than on the current “cyber war” in which WikiLeaks is embroiled.

McGovern said that modern people can now become informed through what he termed “The Fifth Estate.”

“Luckily, there is a Fifth Estate,” he said. “The Fifth Estate exists in the ether. It’s not susceptible of government, of corporations, or advertisers or military control. It’s free. That is very dangerous to people who like to make secrets and to make secret operational things. It’s a huge threat. And the Empire – the Goliath here – is being threatened by a slingshot in the form of a computer and a stone through these emissions thrown into the ether to our own computers.”

“It’s quite amazing,” he added.

“Will the United States and its slavish allies present in Sweden… succeed in making such an object lesson of what happens to an organization and a person – a demonized person – namely Julian Assange? What happens to them if they defy the Empire if they break the rules which they have?” McGovern asked.

He also questioned Attorney General Eric Holder’s handling of the WikiLeaks founder’s case in the wake of habeas corpus being thrown “out the window” by the previous administration. Specifically, he wondered what Holder, the highest law enforcement officer in the US government, meant by the federal government using “other tools” to get Assange and shut down WikiLeaks.

Assange’s attorney said Friday that he expected his client to be indicted by the US.

“The broad hint is the extra-judiciary tools,” he said, referring to the news media. ”And yet not one of those stenographer correspondents sitting before him there has the guts to say, “What do you mean ‘other tools?’ You going to assassinate the guy?”

McGovern continued, “They’re just letting it hang out there like other stuffed shirts like Jeff Merrell at the Pentagon [who says to the effect,] ‘Everything is on the table. We don’t rule anything out.’ Well, you know that reflects the state of the defunct Fourth Estate. That’s precisely why you need people to be able to get out of the framework of the Fourth Estate and to the new.”

McGovern also noted the demise of the Fourth Estate, with an anecdote about the 30th anniversary of the Pentagon Papers’ release in June 2001, months before the 9/11 attacks.

He said that at the reunion, most of those in attendance did not believe the press would publish such information were it made available today.

“They went down the line, two guys from the [New York Times], two guys from the [Washington Post], and they all said, ‘I don’t know,’” McGovern said. “I’m looking at that, and I’m thinking, ‘Holy shit!’”

He continued, “The amazing thing was that these people still had a lot of self-identification with these newspapers – some were still actively employed by them. And not only did they say this, but there was no hint of embarrassment or remorse. It was just the way it is today.”

Even while the Fourth Estate may be dead, WikiLeaks learned one important lesson from Daniel Ellsberg’s release of the Pentagon Papers, McGovern admitted. That lesson was to tell the news media that the documents are being given to more than one outlet at the same time.

WikiLeaks addressed that question by making sure that when they gave documents to the Times, they said The Guardian, Der Spiegal, Le Monde, and El Pais also had them, McGovern said.

“These guys are very, very clever,” he said. “As you can see, I wish them all the success in the world.”

McGovern said that WikiLeaks’ benefit is that it gives people the chance to become informed and place a check on government. He added that WikiLeaks’ information on the wars is the “ground-truth,” in that the data came from the American troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.

McGovern said that WikiLeaks — or outlets like it — has the potential to make the world safer to the degree American people get exposed to this information, draw adult conclusions from it, and pressure the US government to change its policies.

“You have no doubt about the authenticity of what these people are reporting, and it’s a new ballgame once these things become accessible to the American people,” he said.

Here is Milton Friedman’s plan (begun in the 70s) all laid out that will help destroy the middle-class: Tax cuts for the wealthy, the institution of free-trade (i.e., offshoring), privatizing government, deregulation of financial institutions, the elimination of Social Security and the control of the MSM by corporations.

With regard to the last, viz., control of the MSM by corporations/military-industrial complex, Wikileaks is on the barricades fighting to save the world from total enslavement. Revolution doesn’t have to wait anymore. We can work to destroy the corporate/military industrial-complex now, on the Internet. We don’t have to be slave workers of nothingness. REVOLT!

Forget all the Drama about the Cables…

The issue is the Imperative to Prevent the Bank Data being released.

The National Interest and the Secrecy of the Banking Act is to be Invoked to arrive at the Threat of Permanent Incarceration without Trial should Release of that Data remain within the holder’s ability.

Black Suits in London will prepare the Threats.

So we head for a true Mexican Standoff whilst the World spectates.

The fourth estate has been dead since Clinton gave us the “media consolidation act”, which should really be called the “sell out the country’s future act” instead. That is the reason we have NO real news in this country, Clinton SOLD US OUT. And without a free and honest press, you do NOT have a real country.

Folks, the game is over, as it sits now. We have NOTHING to show for the stewardship of my generation, and I do apologize. I tried to keep it from happening, as did lots of other people, but the money won out. The party’s over, turn off the lights and go home, if you still have one.

Kinda sicko that the tittle of one of Friedman’s books, The Tyranny of the Status Quo, is so wrong and opposite of its main objective, to slander liberal/progressive theories/policies as tyranny. As we can see very clearly now, the tyranny of todays status quo is pure corporatism and shows what a phony blowhard Friedman was.
Just like Reagan, he is propped up as a hero and a scholar, both were pathetic chumps.

It was dying/rotting on the vine before the Telecom Act of 1996, but you’re right. Clinton and Gore pushed that act through congress and it has been a disaster. Reagan did his part years before that by dumping the fairness doctrine.

    Edit:

Ray McGovern has ben a patriot for many years; having “gone Native” with us on the Left, I’m surprised he hasn’t faced those “other means” referred to by the CIA and DOD.

WIKI: we have to support its agenda at any cost. Perhaps more of the 854,000 (!) US feds with Top Secret clearances will whistle some more if WikiL survives the onslaught of all the western powers.

I beg to differ. The “Fifth estate” is non existent due to the barrage. Information is now SO plentiful that trying to determine what IS true is like trying to distinguish between two grains of sand on a beach. Question: Which website is telling us the truth? Answer–Whichever one we choose to believe. Flooding the internet with WIKI like sites containing false information would have stopped Assange in his tracks, (if that’s what one wanted to do). My point is, however, there is simply no means for the average person to ferret out what is real and not real, true and not true.

Please don’t use newspaper for your cavies! It’s not even good for that as it can impact their guts &/or disrupt the bacteria within that help the cute little herbavores digest their food! For the same reason I would not use it in my garden…google what is in newspaper due to the processing of paper pulp, I guarantee you won’t want it in your tomatoes or carrots…

It *is* still good for paper mache.

I remember the decline of papers well. Used to be my wife and I would look forward to a Sunday morning drinking coffee and trading sections as we each finished one. Then the stories started looking more and more like…embedded product placement. Then the daily edition became thinner and thinner, finally resembling a ‘free’ paper, the ones that are primarily ads. Then they stopped delivering to the house. All the while, we noticed more and more stories that we’d read about online were either not included in the local paper (which by then had been bought out by a regional behemoth) or had the most peculiar slant applied. Remember that time period when all the old school editors, reporters and TV talking heads were either fired or retired? That was the sign of no return.

In the end, the Fourth Estate was done in by the parasitic life form known as the corporate boardroom. The host is still alive, but it does the bidding of the invader.

This is for the RAW “newbies”

“The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money and more power.
They claim to be superpatriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjugation”

There is a method and that is what makes the powers that be so angry. For instance your suggestion that the internet be flooded with false info won’t work because the computer is so powerful it can detect one byte of difference from the original. To determine the original is simple, it is called “hash”.

The documents are released to several news companies. Each company can compare the hash, if all matches. Then the information becomes more reliable.

As for your other point that the average person cannot ferret out what is true and not true. You are missing the point of the Wikileaks event. Take the Iran election for instance. Because of technology the average Iranian was able to sent information out of the country. This became a problem to the Iranian rulers because they could not suppress the news of election fraud and riots.

The Wikileaks incident is very similar to the Iran situation above. The government is trying it’s best to stop information flow. It is up to us to fight back against tyranny. The U.S can no longer point the finger at Iran for suppressiong information i.e the election incident because that would be the pot calling the kettle black.

Don’t give up and become cynical that one cannot ferret out the truth. If you do then you will be a sheep. Keep fighting for that truth and keep doubting. You can do it. Think of the people of Iran and people all over the world that is fighting to get the truth out and they risk their lifes doing it too.

No, it is not dead. It has become undead – a zombie that is remote-controlled by governments and corporations, but apparently still alive, although not with a functioning brain of itself. As such, it worse than if it had been dead. If it were truly dead, it would leave a vacuum that something else – something better – could fill. That is why they will never let the fourth-estate completely die, but will forever hold it on some life-support and let it do some old tricks from time to time. Nothing dangerous, just enough to maintain the good and fuzzy feeling of having the fourth estate guarding the society.

Your concerns about quantity of information are perfectly balanced by the crowdsourcing effect. YOU don’t need to find all the juicy bits of news. This is why we have social networks and websites like this one. EVERYONE is out there poking around at the information that’s out there and we ALL are posting links and telling each other about the cool stuff that we are finding. This is a totally fascinating phenomenon and it is completely unique in the human experience. We are just getting started with this new concept of information.

    Yeah,
TV is a dead source of journalism, leaving print media, which is dying fast. During the Vietnam War years the same thing happened until finally the NY Times kicked up the Pentagon Papers.

Street protest began in 1966; 5 years later the PP came out and started the ending of the war, which Nixon stopped in 1973.

Rather than virtually go out of business, the Times and Post may refocus and initiate change, albeit SLOWLY.

IMO, Wiki global leaking alone won’t do it.

The fact that websites like this one exist is proof that the Fifth Estate is alive and well.

If RawStory isn’t counter cultural enough, try perusing this lovelies:

    http://www.projectcensored.org/

Sure, the average Joe might never get his hands on info like this.

Unless you print it off for him Frank. You, me, everyone who reads this website, we are the grease in the wheels of the Fifth Estate. It is up to us to cut through the apathy and show people how much their government is screwing them.

I’m not a newbie, but I had never read that quote before. So, I looked the man up on Wikipedia. Wow, he was seriously ahead of his time – and he knew about what would happen when Fox News became a force to be reckoned with.

  • jimbo92107

Oh, bullshit. Quit fear mongering. If there is one thing you should have learned by now, it’s that humanity finds a way to communicate. Ban swearing, you get euphemisms. Stifle the press, you get Wikileaks.

Block the internet…well, we’ll see. But it won’t be the end of the game. That ignores history. Our species depends on information to survive. Otherwise, our civilization cannot function. Even the rich aren’t that stupid.

Don’t worry Com Cast and many other corporations are working diligently to end the free and open internet, you can see the cancer creeping in even now and the FCC will make sure it takes hold and is here to stay.

  • Anonymous

Jimbo, I don’t see any “fearmongering”, this is happening now. While you might be right in the very long run, if we don’t stand up now against TPTB bashing revelations of the truth, we’re going to have a lot of pain, misery and suffering for the next 10-20 years.

I really hope the U.S. doesn’t take the step of indicting Assange, otherwise many following this event may become unhinged.

    Free Julian Assange!

My understanding is that Wikileaks did not give the documents to the New York Times, that The Guardian in the UK passed them on to the NYT.

Now I regret ever giving Google the business.
Especially since they are connected to Viacom and in the process of destroying ‘net neutrality’.

    True…
The Guardian explained that for legal reasons they thought it was better insurance if a US media site was included.

Your response minimizes the seriousness of this issue. If you really are not just a shill then you should be ashamed of yourself. If there is no internet to communicate freely through then what? Do you really in your mind believe that the police state would allow you to find “another way” like printing pamphlets (you would be arrested) or organizing protests (LOL), or resistance meetings (will be called “terrorist cells”)? Don’t count on returning to BBSs either. They will be infiltrated too, since all communication is monitored anyway. Without the right of “free speech” there will only be silence, and then what will you know?? Nothing, that’s what. With a sweep of your hand you imply “no need to worry” “don’t worry something will come along” “no need to do anything” “they won’t win” “don’t worry, be happy.” It’s people with your mindset that contributed to the rise of the Third Reich.

Dear editors: several of the quotes have glaring mistakes. I really appreciate the work that you guys do, but seriously, you lack good proofreading. This is an important story and an important event: I want people to take RS seriously but many won’t when they see this kind of shoddy editing. After all, you already have this totally ugly site counting against you. (But, like an ugly child, we love you anyway.) Keep up the good work!

Wow, most people don’t know how knowledgeable what he’s saying is. Conventional news outlets being replaced using technology is an older conclusion then what most believe.

There’s even been science fiction based on it. Does anyone remember the Max Headroom movie or series? They used a matrix like operators to help support the journalist/reporter while Big News fought Big News using news as currency in ratings.

Simply put, technology can allow anyone with a pocket video camera or privileged information to fill the roll of reporter. If more people pick up on that in a mass scale then you wouldn’t even need a WikiLeaks. Big News’s role would be to gather and organize from available information to conceptualize it much like an investigation.

The Fourth Estate is not dead, its parts are becoming more virtual with technology.

Good point, but when you taint the news to be seen and controlled by corporations then it is nothing more than propaganda. Which is what we have now, so I am not nearly as optimistic as you. Wish it was true. Reality says otherwise.

You are wrong wrong wrong. Electronic media is much easier to censor and manipulate than printed media. Anyone can own a printing press. The internet is a labryinth of gates and switches. The bandwidth is heavily dependent on the switches and the content being switched. Think of what it would be like if every water main in a city was separately owned.

Good argument, however the weakness lies in the fact that not enough people will take the time to visit these posts. Unfortunately the most recent election is filled with examples of too few people visiting truth-telling sites, while the masses, like sheep, went ahead and voted the Faux News party line. If the Fifth estate were truly powerful, Alan Grayson would still be in office, for example. Instead the voters chose a Republican lackey.

  • Anonymous

Good post. However the masses won’t invest the time and energy to research the truthiness of an argument, a position, or a politician. Too often politicians are elected because the won a “beauty contest”. Elections are just vast PR campaigns paid for by powerful interests.

Great job, Mr. McGovern. I’ve been thinking the past couple days about the oath of office which executive branch officers have to take. It says “faithfully,” which I think is often forgotten. The executive officers must faithfully execute the laws of the US. In other words, they must first learn the prevailing law and then follow the existing interpretation. Anything less is a usurpation of power or illegal. All executive officers need to have faith not in the Lord but in the system and they must have faith that the system will operate as it was designed. It’s when executive officers are either on a power grab or they don’t like limits laid down by the law that executive officers apply their own interpretation of the law, which is so prevalent today especially regarding Wikileaks and the entire Bush Administration are cases in point. Obama is just an embarrassment and a debacle, but too many Americans are also to blame. I’m referring to those Americans who think they are special or qualified.

Exactly. This is exactly why the internet trumps the traditional newspaper. People can post their opinions, leave links to more information, call out what they see as slanted, spun, and biased information that some other people may not have the knowledge to pick up on.
I learn so much more from the posters here than I ever do from the news article itself.
I also can spot a troll from a mile away, which gives me perspective on what their agenda is. (How ya doing ThatBostonMan, OldAtlantic, etc…?)
If I leave a comment that pisses lots of folks off, I find their vitriol the next morning in my inbox. Which I appreciate very much. Sometimes I stick by my opinion, other times I realize that I was wrong.

Luckily, 99% of politicians cant program. So they are at the mercy of the geeks.

True, but the thing about money is it’s kind of like Frodo’s ring. It WANTS to be found and found by those without the moral compass to use it wisely.

If you do away with those at the top, you will just create a bigger problem with their children, or those who take their place in the corporation. No, violence isn’t the answer, but making sure by legal means that they are not allowed to pull the shit they have been is a far more effective way to deal with them. Kill them and you create martyrs, who are far harder to kill off than the memories of a live man.

The thing is, unlike Nelson Mandela, who did 27 years in prison only to emerge and become president, these people have NO moral compass. They are not in things for the benefit of anyone but themselves. He had a moral compass, he was not in things for himself. They are. Lock them up for treason and let them rot. Show film of them in prison to deter their fellow crooks. Life in prison is FAR worse than death, I’m pretty sure. Death is quick, life takes, well, a lifetime.

Already way beyond an unquestionably Fascist USA?

    Mussolini’s 1923 definition of fascism :

“In a 1923 pamphlet titled ‘The Doctrine of Fascism’ he wrote, “If classical liberalism spells individualism, Fascism spells government.” But not a government of, by, and for We The People – instead, it would be a government of, by, and for the most powerful corporate interests in the nation.

    US Vice-President Wallace’s 1944 definition :

If we define an American fascist as one who in case of conflict puts money and power ahead of human beings, then there are undoubtedly several million fascists in the United States. There are probably several hundred thousand if we narrow the definition to include only those who in their search for money and power are ruthless and deceitful. … They are patriotic in time of war because it is to their interest to be so, but in time of peace they follow power and the dollar wherever they may lead.”

    In September 2000:

American neocons Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, Richard Perle, Scooter Libby, et al pimped nascent Hitlers into strategic government posts and published their “Mein Kampf” under the title “Project for a New American Century” subsequently bolstered through the exceedingly unpatriotic “Patriot Act” enacted by a mostly gutless, soulless congeries of profiteering Congressional puppets.

Hitler’s, Mussolini’s and Stalin’s brands of fascism were just benign prologues to the super technologically empowered fascist secret state which has evolved from those earlier twentieth century political nightmares.

Know your fascist state: it is deadly, it is here.

It is Orwellian, to be sure. Personally, I liked what I saw in London and Cambridge, yesterday. It was a great protest, a “take it to the streets” brawl. We had those kinds of protests in the ’60s, as I remember, but to young to participate. I think we will eventually need to rise up and shout back at the corporate-government rulers who get their marching orders from Goldman-Sachs, GE and Proctor and Gamble. Our country may or may not be slipping into a Fascist mindset, but we must act before we are enslaved in super low-wage jobs, like serfs.

It’s disconcerting to see such a logically inverted argument.

“Anyone can own a printing press.” Really? Like, who in your neighborhood? Nobody. Printing presses are extremely expensive, and the really big, industrial ones (like newspapers) are owned by large corporations.

“Electronic media is much easier to censor and manipulate than printed media.”
Actually, censorship of electronic media has proven very difficult. Ask the RIAA. Ask the Pentagon. Ask anybody that has tried. It’s a royal bitch.

As for manipulation, that’s hard, too. Anybody can lie, and lots of people do, but it takes a concerted, well-financed effort to deceive large groups of people, literally to alter their perceptions of reality. We’re talking mega-churches and Fox News.

“The internet is a labyrinth of gates and switches.” You don’t know much about computers, do you. Your statement exposes a level of ignorance about internet technology approximately as profound as that held by the crooked ignoramus from Alaska, Ted Stevens. How intelligent do you think these “gates and switches” are? They’re closer to water faucets than to discriminating censors.

Here’s the thing that Julian Assange realized: In order for the secret conspiracy of world rulers to operate, they need an efficient, high-speed system of communication, ie, the internet. And they need to hide their dirty data from you and me, The Angry Mob. If somebody like Wikileaks can find a way to make that system too risky to use, that makes it difficult for secret conspiracies to survive.

If, on the other hand, the secret conspiracy says, “Okay, we’ll just shut the whole fucking internet down,” then guess what? That means they can’t use it, either. The reason: Every large, coordinated system has lots of inter-operating parts, and they all need to communicate. That means even the most secret conspirators don’t do all their own work. They have to hire grunts like you and me to do their typing and thousands of other details. That means one of their grunts might just save a little of the dirty data on a pen drive (or whatever’s available), and pass that along to The Angry Mob.

“Think of what it would be like if every water main in a city was separately owned.”

Sorry, that statement is incoherent. How does this apply to the monopolies that already own the communication infrastructure? How does this apply to community owned wifi? It’s disconnected from reality, now and in the future.

When I tell you that humans find a way, I did not say it would be an easy way, or a peaceful way. The rich and corporations will not give up their stranglehold on America without a fight. Are you ready? Am I? It’s time to ask ourselves this question.

There’s a whole collection of progressive radio online. If you go to this link: http://radiotime.com.

There’s a ton of internet radio online and there is a link to progressive radio like Thom Hartmann, Ed Schulz, etc. I use it because the Thom Hartmann show is a rebroadcast on our local progressive station and I can find his show directly from Portland, OR and now Washington DC. Of course, if you miss something or don’t have access locally, it’s a good resource.

I get all of my news from either the internet or John Stewart. Although, I still subscribe to the Sunday edition mostly for the coupons and sale ads. There are still local news stories available from the paper online so instead of wasting paper, I just go to their website.

The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. She traces everything from the 1970′s on – including how Friedman’s economic doctrine was practiced in Argentina and Chile and now, it’s here!!! It’s well worth the read.

    To Hologram5:

You wrote: “I know a lot of people that refer to Obama as Bush lite”

Obama is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, one whose fangs and claws have been sharpened by the immense accretion of discretionary powers gained for the unitary presidency by both democratic and republican fascists.

Obama and his Republican allies are not “Bush Lite”, they are Bush enhanced.

As I said earlier: Know your fascist state: it is deadly. it is here.

Parts of the system have already shifted to a separate physical backbone. Secure satellite wireless also gives them another controlled medium. What’s left is like the system of highway backroads. The conditions and checkpoints can be as onerous as they want. The pieces are already in place to render out internet a communications backroad.

“‘The Empire’ is ‘being threatened by a slingshot in the form of a computer’”

Does this mean that now the Palestinians have a shot at those Israeli tanks with their slingshots?

“RayMcGovern Exclusive: The Fourth Estate is dead, former CIA analyst declares Traditional lines of communication between the people and the press have fallen into such disrepair in America that a whole new approach is necessary to challenge the military-industrial-governmental complex, according to a former CIA analyst sympathetic to WikiLeaks.”

Ahem…Mr. McGovern, Sir, it’s not just the lines of communication between the people and the press that have fallen into disrepair, you know?

“McGovern said that WikiLeaks — or outlets like it — has the potential to make the world safer to the degree American people get exposed to this information, draw adult conclusions from it, and pressure the US government to change its policies.”

And that, my friends, is the reason why the government wants to shut down WikiLeaks and silence Julian Assange. A stupid population is easier to control and lie too.

  • TheDevilCanDance

Ray Mc Govern used to be the CIA analyst responsible for the president daily briefing.
He is not your average crackpot. I have been waiting for years for MC Govern personal opinion on the 9/11 conspiracy issue, As a very prudent & wise man, he never spoke about it until a couple of years ago. I am paraphrasing what he publicly said

” after years of careful personal researches and exchanges with friends & former colleagues, and as a former CIA analyst for more than 30 years,I came to the conclusion that the events of 9/11 are very suspicious…..& I cannot exclude the possibility that individuals linked to the government or involved in the highest spheres of national decision making, may have something to do with these events….”.

Americans, pay attention to what he has to say, he may be a Mc Govern, but he is the real Mc Coy.

    President Woodrow Wilson 1916
“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the civilized world. No longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”

I was drafted for the Vietnam war way back a long time ago. I went in kicking and screaming by enlisting, burning my draft card and jail was not an option, and Canada seemed so far away. I felt robbed of my chance to protest in the college protests going on at the time. They were real then. I ended up in South Korea and saw Nixon run out of office. When I got out, the protests had died down. The press was real and powerful as evident by the great journalism of Woodward and Bernstein. The press turned ugly under the Clinton administration and seemed to have been hijacked. I was finally sure of this when under the Bush Administration the press seemed to disappear altogether, they had become cheerleaders for the Iraq war. I guess you could call this war profiteering. There were still journalists as war correspondents who gave their lives trying to give us the real story. But, for the most part, the 4th Estate has been swallowed up by large corporations who only have one mantra, profits and more profits, and now demand tax cuts. Now, we have the internet still in its infancy relative to its technological promise and potential, and threatens the very monopoly of information distribution once held by the 4th Estate. No longer is an audience seduced into a hypnotic trance of being passive observers, now we have ordinary citizens thrust into the light transformed into active participants all in the blink of an eye, in a new world of electronic democracy , the power elite tremble in their boots.

Maybe he means that the internet, in the form of any computer willing to post the truth, is rendering their carefully cultivated system of mass-indoctrination somewhat unstable.

She was not computer literate and but she did want the latest news even into her illness that took her, so I was pleased to help her even if she was old school.

Add to all this, that Silverstein wanted to replace the towers, but culdn’t because the projected cost was prohibitive because of the building materials used in the original construction. Reports had access doors sealed for two weeks before 911. There was a CDI(Control Demolition Inc.) barge in the East River on 911, which was used to clear the evidence, so that it could be quickly disposed. Cheney was involved in the acceptance testing of a fly by wire commercial aircraft system, 1 year before 911. Its use would have left signatures. Hence the simultanous military ops on 911, and the sequestering of tower recordings. Experienced commercial pilots couldn’ t reproduce the tower flights in a flight simulator.

I love Ray McGovern. I read his work in the run up to the Iraq War and in the years after it began. I had the priviledge of hearing him speak in Seattle. He is a patriot in the class of Zinn and Chomsky, only with CIA and government experience that only enhances his credibility. He is one of the most honest men alive today. If there were more like him in government, our country would be far better off.

I couldn’t put it down but then I like history & politics. At the time of the assasination/murder/suicide of President Allende, I was taking an honors class in Marxian Economic Theory (that was the only time they offered the class) and one of the RA’s teaching the class had just returned from Chile and shared his experiences with us in the class. I also worked in the Dept. of Economics so I had alot of debates with some of these economists. Pinochet’s coup was financed by the US (Nixon, Richard Helms, ITT, CIA, FBI). This also was the reason that the CIA and FBI could no longer share information. Further, the CIA was “supposedly” not to participate in any cases in the US and the FBI was also restrained from working outside the US.

It’s a pretty powerful message and what happened then in Chile, is happening now in the US.

That’s because it’s not true: Marvin was on the board of directors with Securacom until 2000, securacom was not in charge of security at the WTC; that was the Port Authority, and Wirt Walker III is not related to the Bush family.

However, the lamestream media did report all this, but note that they, too, get the “Wirt Walker is a “distant” Bush relative” claim wrong.

Your intentions are well-meaning, but I hope you’ll verify stuff you see on Youtube from now on so that you know the facts in detail.

McGovern is correct for the moment, but there are laws in place now, all over the world for dire censorship. At any moment, the President of our country can shut down the ENTIRE net if he/she feels justified. Communication from the outside ceases. A huge vacuum is created. Freedom thwarted.

What governments NEVER seem to get, even after passing draconian legislation to shut the people’s mouths and ears, is that there’s always another way to get information out into the open. We are ingenious, nothing is impossible. Not even through fear.

    “SAFEGUARDS OF DEMOCRACY”
I believe that the transparency our leaders talk about is a term they use to make us think that that they are sharing important information with the American people. NOT !
we are having the ” THE NEW WORLD ORDER” shoved right down our throats weather we want or not! the Constitution has a paragraph to protect us from corrupt government leaders
    see quote below:

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably
the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism,
it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government,
and to provide new Guards for their future security.

HERE IS A QUOTE FROM ONE OF HITLERS HENCHMAN :
    Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering

“It is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter
to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament,
or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.
It works the same in any country.”

My last straw with the national M$M media happened last night, with Bernie Sanders. Sanders, a US Senator spent over 10 hours giving an amazing speech yesterday about the destruction of the middle class, and he was completely ignored on the evening news. Instead they dragged out Clinton to support the miserable legislation they are trying to ram down our throats.

I remember the coup and how it was one of the many things that sparked the Church Committee hearings and reform legislation. It all happened just as I was starting out after High School (college came later for me). The coup and other, similar activities formed my low opinions of the various intelligence services at the time and, unfortunately, I’ve seen no reason to change them since then.

I agree with your assessment, we’ve seen this movie before. I don’t think it’s a repeat, I think it never really stopped, despite the law. Its recent recrudescence is just a symptom of the more open contempt that the ruing class holds for the ruled. The uppercrust just doesn’t see any reason to pretend that we’re a democracy anymore and that attitude has trickled down to the help. I mean, nobody asks the sheep if they *want* to be sheared, do they?

“draw adult conclusions” seems to be the operative phrase.

It is concerning how many people are blindly criticizing wikileaks and anyone who supports wikileaks.

I am slowly coming to an unwelcome realization – a democracy of apathy and blind faith ruled by an elite using fear to direct people is a very, very dangerous thing. We see it to some extent in India, though not the fear part so much, but this response from America has seriously got me concerned about its increasing influence in our country as well as many other parts in the world.

The Indian masses have never had an issue with whistleblowers. In fact, our ‘masala’ culture makes them practically revered. Yet, there are many Indians blindly parroting out things like lives endangered and diplomatic privacy, etc. Its honestly scary. I do hope that those adult conclusions start manifesting real fast.

It is looking like the fourth estate took along the masses to its grave with sheer brainwashing.

Which is by design, of course, that not everyone will get their hands on this information. The most disenfranchised of the world (and in this country) do not have regular internet access…not to mention the freedom/ability to sit and really internalize all of it by doing the reading, the research. It’s a lot. It takes a large mind to wrap your head around this, and and even larger one to come up with intelligent solutions.

It all comes back to people “making adult conclusions.” Not everyone is starting at a baseline where they can grasp it all. How do we make it accessible?

I applaud Mr. Mcgovern, for seeing the leaks are a necessity in today’s world! Our Government has become increasingly closed off to the people. Actually encouraging thru the media to believe the news as it is told to them. Doesn’t have to be the truth or even close to the truth! The Government encourages the general public to believe and not think about what they are being told. In some cases the American public is relieved to not have to think or worry if it is even the truth! Many members of the media have betrayed their country because they report what they are being told to report. truth or not! Julian Assange is a hero and so are the people on the Internet who refuse to let him be silenced!

Hey Jason, Can you tell me exactly where, or how, the Bible tells us slavery is okay? I bet you can’t, because it doesn’t. Maybe you will point out to one of the passages that says “Slaves, obey your masters.” The complete passage continues with “and not just when he is watching you, but even when he isn’t” And who said this passage, oh great knowledgable JasonA? Since I am sure you don’t know I will help you, it was Paul. He said it several times in his letters to various early Christians. The Bible is a book given by God to help people live their lives. Israel was basically a slave nation to Rome at the time. He was trying to help them survive! And that passage probably has as much or more credence for workers today, many of whom work very hard in under payed jobs. Or don’t you think people don’t feel like slaves today, even though they may be paid, kind of. Only a luney leftist like you would, somehow, construe this to be an endorsement of slavery. It makes me wonder what your last name is JasonA. Is there only three letters in your last name, the last two the same letter?

Exactly where, or how, does the Bible say slavery is okay? I bet you can’t tell me, can you? Because it doesn’t. You may point to one of the passages that says “Slaves, obey your masters”. The rest of the passage says “and not only when he is watching you, but when he isn’t also.” And you seem to know so much about the Bible, oh knowledgable JasonA, so tell me who said this. Since I am sure that you have no clue, I will help you out. Paul said this several times in his letters to the early Christians. You see, Israel was basically a slave nation to Rome at this time. The Bible was given to us by God to help us live our lives. And those particular passages probably have more credence today than ever, with many people working their tails off only to be crapped on by the boss and the government administration, or don’t you think people in that situation feel like slaves? Only a luney leftist like you could somehow construe that as the Bible condoning slavery. It makes me wonder what you last name is JasonA. Is there only three letters in your last name, the last two the same letter?

You’re just now figuring this out?? Where’s YOU been? The erosion of the “4th Estate has been taking place since the late 70′s and early 80′s. Conservative think tanks have had it in for the Mainstream Media since the fall of Nixon, when 2 reporters took him down in a little scandal called, “Watergate”. Ever since then, it’s been “kill the messenger (media)”. And the “librul media” barrage began. The Fat Man, ElRushbo, took up the mantle in the early 80′s, and Faux News, led by Roger Ailes, took it even further in the 90′s. Now, “librul media” is the norm in conserva-talk and conserva-think. Even Frank Luntz has figured it out and actually talked about the two polarizing views in American politics on Faux News with Hannity. He even acknowledges that there’s two sets of facts out there, and we now watch the news to confirm our beliefs, not to be informed. I’ve been arguing this for over 5 years now, but my conservative friends refuse to get it. Or they just won’t admit it.

“As for your male and female slaves whom you may have; you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round about you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you, to inherit as a possession forever; you may make slaves of them, but over your brethren the people of Israel you shall not rule, over one another, with harshness.”

    Levitcus 25:44-46.

Your rant is exactly what I have been saying for a long time: religion is nonsense and perpetuates the darker side of human nature. And brings out the worst in people. I dont give one hoot about Rome or Israel. But I do care a lot about the USA…you should try, but I know you will not succeed, to cast off the yoke of ignorance and join Century 21.

Other, more enlightened than you, commentators on this page have given you Bible references proving my point. Here is one more: Exodus 21:2-6 There are others. Now dont forget to go to church tomorrow and meet up with your fellow haters and co-delusionists.

I know what you mean, but 2001 was when the wash out of the 4th estate or whatever you want to call it, just became palpably eggregious. Read up about Allen Dulles, Grand Wurlitzer and Operation Mockingbird. Not that this shit is even necessary; one does not have a come-up in the news biz unless you already have the censor living IN YOUR HEAD. And by this I of course don’t mean some sort of implant, if you don’t know how far you can go you don’t go far. HA!

When Holder speaks of “other tools”, he means something illegal. Bush threw the Constitution out the window, and the government and the house and senate, and the people in this country allowed it. By their spineless quiet, they allowed and enabled it. That is how it was done.

And this President has failed in his duty to rectify what Bush did. So his lack of Constitutional ethics will encourage further assaults on liberty. And further administrations will continue to break the law, because there is no penalty.

So this government or some other, with our assist will take this man down. Either by illegal means or assassination. Take you’re pick. This world is corrupt. And this country we live in is one of the worst. It is shameful for us, because we have a Constitution and we know better. That is our shame.

It appears that George Orwell’s book 1984 was 30 years too early should have been 2014. In a world where Truth is wrong and Lies are correct, where everything is about control of others one gets worried as to what is going to happen next. If we put together the ‘so called agreement’ of the Cagun Greeny Conference, the news according to our government and the real truth from wikileaks, we finish up with a World Government (control) over the world’s people dumbed down by a press that cannot be trusted

He’s not a journalist – he’s a whisleblower. I (and anyone in their right mind no longer trusts journalists….but research the base facts instead).

Right wing has been controlling the air waives – both radio and TV for decades despite the protestations of the loonies like $arah and the Faux crew.

well no, WaStConcerned, i disagree on a technicality. words have meanings, and when embarrassed authorities are trying to criminalize activities, we should be especially cautious.

    Legal Dictionary
    Entry: whis·tle·blow·er
    Function: noun
: an employee who brings wrongdoing by an employer or other employees to the attention of a government or law enforcement agency and who is commonly vested by statute with rights and remedies for retaliation —compare QUI TAM ACTION — whis·tle·blow·ing /-i[ng]/ noun

from this definition private manning (deserving of the medal of honor) is the whistleblower – not assange. manning could not present the data up his chain of command and expect the illegal activity to be exposed, so he then presented the data to a publisher of such information in hopes public uproar would rectify the situation – a function that used to be performed by the 4th estate (for a public that gave a shit), but that has been compromised by the act of 1996 and the constant crippling of the FCC and all our regulatory agencies in favor of corporate profits. The free press has simply been shuttled to the internet.

so instead of prosecuting american war criminals; the torturers and those who gave the orders to torture or to engage in the wholesale massacre of civilians – the full legal and political resources of the united states of america are being directed at asserting and weaving a charge of “receiving stolen property” at assange.

so now truth is the sole legal property of the government liar – a curious concept for a country that calls itself a representative democracy – and but another disgrace to this administration – but all governments need the cover of legitimacy for their criminal activities. hey president constitutional lawyer! i want my habeas corpus back!

Correct. It is a whole new situation as the American people realize our government consistently lies to us and the news is not the news as it is comparable only to any other despotic country’s propaganda machines. Americans know the difference between freedom and tyranny even when tyranny is wrapped in the flag with a huge “safety” pin on it.

Why doesn’t he mention HOW the 4th estate died? The CIA has a representative in EVERY media outlet across America, who decides what news gets “out” and what is is “allowed” to go through. I have personally experienced this. This is the reason we get so little truth from our media. It is completely controlled.

1.One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.
2.Any honest examination of the national life proves how far we are from the standard of human freedom with which we began. The recovery of this standard demands of everyone who loves this country take a hard look at himself, for the greatest achievements must begin somewhere, and they always begin with the person. If we are not capable of this examination, we may yet become one of the most distinguished and monumental failures in the history of nations.
3.Those disputing, contradicting, and confuting people are generally unfortunate in their affairs. They get victory, sometimes, but they never get good will, which would be of more use to them.
    4. Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution of new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.
5.I have always thought that one man of tolerable abilities may work great changes, and accomplish great affairs among mankind, if he first forms a good plan, and cutting off all amusements or other employments that would divert his attention, make the execution of that same plan his sole study and business.
    6. The great secret of succeeding in conversation is to admire little, to hear much; always to distrust our own reason, and sometimes that of our friends; never pretend to wit, but to make that of others appear as much as possibly we can; to hearken to what is said and to answer to the purpose.
    7. I sincerely believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs.
8.If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them, will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.
9.The art of illuminism lay in enlisting dupes as well as adepts and by encouraging dreams of honest visionaires or the schemes of fanatics. By flattering the vanity of ambitious egotists. By working on unbalanced brains or by playing such passions as greed and power to make men of totally divergent aims serve the secret purpose of the sect. People with money were welcomed but kept oblivious of actual secrets. The purpose is to win power and riches. To undermine secular or religous government and attain the masters of the world.
    10. Evils’ (satan, wicked people, big government, banks, cults,) greatest trick was convincing you (people) that he did not exist.
