Exclusive: US empire could collapse at any time, Pulitzer winner tells Raw Story

America’s military and economic empire could collapse at any time, but predicting the precise day, week or month of its potential demise is unattainable, according to a former New York Times war correspondent who spoke with Raw Story.

“The when and how is very dangerous to predict because there’s always some factor that blindsides you that you didn’t expect,” Pulitzer-winning journalist Chris Hedges said in an exclusive interview. “It doesn’t look good. But exactly how it plays out and when it plays out, having covered disintegrating societies, it’s impossible to tell.”

He explained that he learned this lesson as events unfolded around him in the fall of 1989. Then, members of the opposition to the Soviet Empire told him that they predicted travel across the Berlin Wall separating East from West Germany would open within the year.

“Within a few hours, the wall didn’t exist,” he said.

Hedges was one of the 131 activists were arrested in an act of civil disobedience outside the White House yesterday, even as Obama was unveiling a new report citing progress in the Afghanistan war.

Speaking to Raw Story on Wednesday night, he said the signs of US collapse are plain to see and compared the country’s course through Afghanistan to Soviet Russia’s.

“We’re losing [the war in Afghanistan] in the same way the Red Army lost it,” he said. “It’s exactly the same configuration where we sort of control the urban centers where 20 percent of the population lives. The rest of the country where 80 percent of the Afghans live is either in the hands of the Taliban or disputed.”

“Foreigners will not walk the streets of Kabul because of kidnapping, and journalists regularly meet Taliban officials in Kabul because the whole apparatus is so porous and corrupt,” he said.

One day after this interview was conducted, reports hit the global media noting the CIA’s warning to President Obama, that the Pakistan-supported Taliban could still regain control of the country.

Hedges predicted that President Obama’s war report released Thursday would “contradict not only [US] intelligence reports but everything else that is coming out of Afghanistan.”

His prediction came startlingly true: the CIA’s own assessment was said to stand in striking contrast with President Obama’s report.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, insisted that the US controlled more territory in Afghanistan than it did a year ago.

‘A corporate coup d’état in slow motion’

Hedges said he attended the protest and planned to get arrested because he is against the corporate powers that have enveloped the nation.

“We’ve undergone a corporate coup d’état in slow motion,” he said. “Our public education system has been gutted. Our infrastructure is corroding and collapsing. Unless we begin to physically resist, they are going to solidify neo-feudalism in this country.”

“If we think that Obama is bad, watch the next two years because these corporate forces have turned their back on him,” Hedges warned.

Hedges, author of “Death of the Liberal Class,” said that his vision of America is one with a functioning social democracy, which stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of the corporate state.

“American workers, as they are repeatedly told, will have to become competitive with prison labor in China,” he said. “That’s where we’re headed, and all the pillars of the liberal establishment are complicit in this.”

“At least if you get sick in the UK, you don’t go bankrupt or die,” he added.

Hedges said that another pressure point is the US dollar, which he pointed out had been dropped by Russia and China in favor of modified ruble/renminbi exchanges.

“A few more deals like that, and our currency becomes junk,” he said.

Hedges continued, “As long as we have relative stability, these lunatic fringe movements can be held at bay, but if we don’t undertake serious structural reform, which we’re not doing, then it is inevitable that we will come to a tremendous crisis – economic and political as well as environmental.”

This video, featuring portions of a speech given by Chris Hedges, was shot outside the White House on Dec. 16, 2010.

Arrrgggghhh!!! Stephen C. Webster, you’re not doing a very good job of editing.

This is a perfect illustration of why I can’t / won’t forward Raw Story’s articles to anyone else. It’s a real shame!

Seems every generation has their “this is the end!” crowd. I’ve always known something was going to break here in the U.S. given the push for corporate fascism, but when I heard that the fear seemed to be a generational thing, I put it out of my mind.. until 2001 through 2003. After we were attacked (with the help of either incompetence or vile collusion of our Government) in 2001 -everyone- knew something was serious… as we slid into 2003 and the illegal invasion of Iraq, watching the lies and bullshit on TV and seeing how many morons in this country lapped it all up, I knew the end was, in fact, on the way.. it was just a matter of time.

Of course, “end” is a relative term. I don’t know how “far down” we’ll go; I doubt we’ll be doing Mad Max in neighborhoods near you (and me).. that’s just not how things work. But it isn’t going to be pretty, the long hard rebuilding after the crash.

We have land for food.. we have mountains full of minerals for production.. we have a crapload of space to grow shittons of hemp for textiles… we just need to take ownership of those things/spaces back from the few that are holding them hostage today. The ultimate outcome of the long running abuse of this country will probably result in a Democratic Socialism by the time all is said and done. I just hope I’m still around to see it when it finally happens.

    OK,OK…..bring out the soma:

    Soma in Aldous Huxley’s
    Brave New World

“Benito was notoriously good-natured. People said of him that he could have got through life without ever touching soma. The malice and bad tempers from which other people had to take holidays never afflicted him. Reality for Benito was always sunny.”

“you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma.”

“the warm, the richly coloured, the infinitely friendly world of soma-holiday. How kind, how good-looking, how delightfully amusing every one was! ”

“Swallowing half an hour before closing time, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds.”

“All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects.”

“I don’t understand anything,” she said with decision, determined to preserve her incomprehension intact. “Nothing. Least of all,” she continued in another tone “why you don’t take soma when you have these dreadful ideas of yours. You’d forget all about them. And instead of feeling miserable, you’d be jolly. So jolly,”

“”Don’t you want to be free and men? Don’t you even understand what manhood and freedom are?” Rage was making him fluent; the words came easily, in a rush. “Don’t you?” he repeated, but got no answer to his question. “Very well then,” he went on grimly. “I’ll teach you; I’ll make you be free whether you want to or not.” And pushing open a window that looked on to the inner court of the Hospital, he began to throw the little pill-boxes of soma tablets in handfuls out into the area.”

For a moment the khaki mob was silent, petrified, at the spectacle of this wanton sacrilege, with amazement and horror.”

“Free, free!” the Savage shouted, and with one hand continued to throw the soma into the area while, with the other, he punched the indistinguishable faces of his assailants. “Free!” And suddenly there was Helmholtz at his side-”Good old Helmholtz!”-also punching-”Men at last!”-and in the interval also throwing the poison out by handfuls through the open window. “Yes, men! men!” and there was no more poison left. He picked up the cash-box and showed them its black emptiness. “You’re free!”

“The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work. Three men with spraying machines buckled to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air.”

    ”Hug me till you drug me, honey;
    Kiss me till I’m in a coma;
    Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny;
    Love’s as good as soma.”

My blog name is what I stand for and have marched for since 1966. The D.C. stand in the snow by military veterans and other patriots may become as symbolic as Geo. Washington crossing the Delaware River.

If you watch the heroic event more than once and really study faces and stances, you can truly see people putting themselves at risk, something few are willing to do.

After awhile all the blog talk and invective, though well-meaning, is lost in a sea of chatter down a rabbit hole. More non-violent protest is essential — before the next wave of demonstrators appears, the ones who are REALLY pissed and fed up and go underground to make bombs and use weapons.

God help us all if this level of hell-raising returns. The nat’l security state is ready for it and will defend the establishment in brutal fashion. But SOMETHING has to get people off their butts. Maybe seeing brave older men and women face the music will encourage younger people to put down their little screens and GET REAL!

According to the mainstream media all of the conditions in the US are like paradise.
The Military Industrial Complex is more profitable than ever in it’s history.
The Pharmaceutical industrial complex is more profitable than ever before.
The large banking institutions are paying the largest bonuses than they have ever paid before.
The wealthiest 2% are in a tax utopia and they are acquiring all of the bottom 98%’s assets.

My faux news tells me that Chris Hedges does not know what he is talking about.

Wo, be a bit nice. As a person who writes 12 hours a day for a living without being able to make a particularly comfortable living out of it, I understand where mistakes come from.

Chris Hedges does incredible work these days. I wonder how frustrated people like Hedges and Stephen Kinzer must have been while working at the New York Times.

You forgot this one, which kills two birds with one stone: “Hedges said that another pressure point is the US dollar, which he pointed Russia and China has dropped…”

RS: good at reporting, bad at editing. I understand that editing is a tremendous task, but almost every story I read has several glaring errors.

Pretty bleak, eh? The thing that galls me is that we as Americans have to compete with “prison” labor in China…. really? I’ll research that statement. I don’t know anything about prison labor in China, but if that really is the case, that China has made it’s economic gains by exploiting their prisoners, then how can we win? We can’t!….. back later with an informed opinion.

Obama has embraced Bush’s foreign policy, war policy, even his Secretary of Defense. Looks like we can trust neither party to “change” anything. Yet, during the Clinton years, Jim Baker and Warren Christopher rigged the system so that no third party candidate could ever do what Ross Perot did in 1992.

Now, with the TSA, “Homeland Security” (nice Nazi ring to it, **Heimatslanddienst**), and SWAT teams everywhere, do you think they might be expecting a revolution?

When the government fears the people, you have liberty. When the people fear the government, you have tyranny.

It is a reflection of the corporationms taking control of America and the message they allow Americans to hear, kind of like FOX news watchers becoming stupid after watching FOX news for any length of time.

As a U.S. citizen it gives me no pleasure to say that it (collapse) can’t happen soon enough — so much innocent blood and so much suffering, ALL unnecessary, tracing directly to us, especially over the last 10 years.

I’ll say it again, IT CAN’T COME SOON ENOUGH.

    Joe,
    I love your optimism.

IMO it’s hard to say what may come (except, as you note, Max won’t show up). The 60s produced some egalitarianism and civil rights that lasted for a few years. Then the godforsaken “conservatives” returned to screw it all up again — but with some positive results remaining for citizens.

A big difference between then and now is we were the King of All but now we’re teetering economically as the great change engine of history arrives, and we’re controlled by economic forces and powers beyond our grasp.

I predict more heavy drug use, social destruction (families, homelessness) and a depressed, beaten-down civil reaction — until people finally, out of desperation, hit the streets, at risk, to protest for change.

It will get ugly unless true anomie is here. Wishfully, our nat’l character of fighting back, MAY FINALLY resurface.

If it doesn’t, IMO we will see lots more poverty and crime, like in Eastern Europe and many other places, wherein so many are on the take and/or scrambling to stay alive and feed families. Basically the middle class becomes the lower m. c. and the lower m. c. drops, etc., not exactly the American dream.

Last, I strongly believe protest in the streets can force change — but it’s risky business that goes far beyond blogging. People will have a choice — get shit on or stand up and fight.

Okay, I’ve read an article that supports his statement. And I am appalled that we cannot do much about it from our end. What are we to do except spread the word, and pressure our government to lobby the UN to condemn China for their practices, and press for fair trade not free trade. We need to ask ourselves whether the cheap prices we get for consumer goods imported from China are really worth it? China sold it’s people the dream of Marx’s worker’s paradise and got slavery instead. We were sold the capitalist dream of free trade and wound up supporting communist totalitarianism! Free trade would be fair trade, if we were trading with free countries. I know it would hurt, but the only moral thing to do in this situation would be to cut off all trade with China until these abuses end. A UN sponsored embargo would do the trick! I know it’s radical, but something has to be done!

Anyone who is looking objectively can see it coming, how can a society that is so self consumed and indifferent to the rest of the world last, we are destroying our resources and our ecosystem in the name of profit. Killing in the name of corporate profits, the exploitation of the poor and sick. The world is also over populated and growing, something has to give the stress is growing higher and higher across the globe. Face it when 9/11 happened it set of the inevitable scenario. THE END OF THE EMPIRE

Thank God Hedges finally said “physically resist.” We’ve seen that contacting our representatives generally gets no results. Ordinary protests around the country–and even those by people like Stewart and Colbert–are either not covered or barely covered. The media does not give us the truth, just speculation or two opposing sides arguing with no facts presented.

However, if we pay attention and just look around, we can see the collapse now. I have many friends who are barely scraping by or who are just broke. Some of them are educated professionals. I’ve already learned to live on less with Social Security, and have managed to build up a supply of basics as well as alternative heating–so that gives you an idea of how bad it will become.

And since the clowns in Congress will not address our problems, the choice boils down to (1) hiding out in the woods or (2) revolution.

Actually, it’s fairly well known that China does indeed use slave labor for it’s businesses. And you’re right, we CAN’T compete against that. We were NEVER SUPPOSED TO. This whole last 30 years in this country have been a huge race to the bottom, with education, justice, and sanity going right down the toilet as quickly as the righties and the rich thought they could get away with it.

The thing is, if you look at everything they have done to us in the last 30 years, it’s pretty clear that it’s all been a definite plan. They lowered our wages, took away our benefits, raised prices on everything, bad mouthed American workers at every chance, dropped the tariffs that USED to keep business competitive for 200+ years, dropped taxes on businesses, gave them breaks for shutting down and moving factories to foreign countries (47,000 of them during W’s time ALONE), and a whole host of other things that were DESIGNED to destroy the living standard we had built up. This ENTIRE thing was done to us ON PURPOSE. And that is the part that kills me, this WAS ALL PLANNED.

We were NEVER intended to compete with the third world. We were ALWAYS intended to lose, lose lose. And we have. Only those whose plan in being used right now have gained a fucking thing. And that was ALWAYS the way it was supposed to work. I saw this coming 30 years ago. What the hell is wrong with everyone else?

Wilson Clark, Paul Erlich, David Brower, Mother Earth News… hell, even Thomas Malthus, explained this long ago. Any damn fool who reads the news sees it coming now. So I’m not sure this is much of an exclusive. I lived off grid from 1980 to 1995 because “I saw it coming.”

I just hope we’re all wrong, and something will wake us up–though it’s hard to imagine what, beyond an invasion from another planet.

The saddest part to me is that it really doesn’t have to be this way, if we’d stop killing each other and start working on things that actually matter to humans. It does please me immensely that countless hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, are doing the latter, even though they don’t generally make the headlines.

Not sure of the exact amount, but I think a Chinese worker gets $3 a day and in places like Malasia/Bangladesh it’s 25 cents. And I have also heard China uses slave labor, but not sure where you would go to confirm that. In any case, we cannot compete with those wages unless Congress changes the laws here (like tariffs and tax credits for corporations that outsource. And since Congress is bought by the corporations, don’t expect any changes.

    Rhetoric of the wealthy:

    We rule you.

    We Fool you.

    We shoot you.

    Rhetoric of the working class.

    We feed all.

Labor is what feeds the world and produces the wealth. Labor is what holds the floor up on their backs while the rich dances on it. Labor makes the chair, the rich sits idle. The rich sells the chair for profit but the profit isn’t in what the chair is sold for, the profit is in the cheap labor.

Labor is what is feeding the world. Who picks the beans from the fields? Not the rich. They sit on the porch drinking lemonade. The rich are unproductive.

The reason the nation collapsed in 1929 and today is the rich didn’t want to get rich being productive they wanted to get rich gambling.

Investment is a lie. Merge with another company and reduce the work force. One can say investment was in the merging but it didn’t create jobs, rather it created “downsizing”. Every merger resulted in downsizing, not jobs creation.

Another reason why the word “investment” is a lie is because it can also mean gambling. Buying stocks is called investment but it is actually gambling. A get rich scheme. Creating a bubble ie. housing market, is a know when to hold em, know when to fold em. If you bail out before the bubble bursts you hit pay dirt. But this investment isn’t productive. Crashes such and 1929 and today is never productive. America is hurt by it.

Monopoly Capitalism is the link-up between high finance, corporations and the government aka the United States. This monopoly in stocks, shares and state loans aka bail outs is exported outside the country into countries like China where cheap labor aka we feed all, is found.

    Hows the War doing?

In time of war everyone is told to identify with the State. To go against this is treason against the state.

But is your country in danger? or the ruling class? The ruling class alone owns the State and controls all of society with its own class interest.

Are the workers defending their own interests, their own state, their own class in the front line trenches?

I love the phrase a corporate coup d’etat. It’s very real. But the main problem with it is that corporations are so stupid and shortsighted they couldn’t organize their way out of a paper bag if they didn’t have tons of money and credit to grease their way along.

Can someone please explain to me why we would even want to have an empire of any sort?

It’s very simple: Cut our military to 1/4 it’s present size, withdraw from all foreign bases and get our economy strong again.

No other option is sustainable. Thanks, George W. for a whole bunch of expensive NOTHING.

Not too long ago our government had a structure that was supportive of the middle class and used equalizing factors such as tariffs to guarantee a stable environment for a domestic manufacturing base. The proceeds of these tariffs was a large portion of the financing of the federal government. The dissolving of these protections for the US population has substantially shifted our wealth to the top 5% on the economic ladder.

I have been keeping an eye on the mass arrest story, Rawstory.com picked it up at 4:30. Not one single corporate news outlet website has mentioned it yet. Obviously any reporting on dissent is being suppressed. America will be lucky to make it to 2011. My heart is broken, I am afraid for my family, and afraid of my government.

You’re missing the part where “free trade” is benefiting exactly those it was intended to benefit. And it set it up by giving ignorant, selfish idiots “more junk” to buy cheaper, while telling them that “the more you by the better of a person you are”.

Consumerism is a disease. Seriously, honestly, truly a disease whereby the consumer is convinced that “buying that one other thing!” will make them “happy”, will fill the void in their broken soul. There’s a reason all the commercials on TV are about happy fun stuff, about being popular, being desired, being accepted, but only if you “buy this thing”. … so making all that cheap crap from China available to us, we fell into their trap and got hooked on buying more cheap crap.

Happiness is not about the amount of crap you own. But try telling that to Fox Nation or, in fact, 75% of this country. Have you seen the literal stampedes at Wal-Mart and other “made in China” bullshit stores this time of year? People are literally dying to buy more crap they don’t need, hoping it will _finally_ make them (or their dysfunctional kids) happy.

Nothing will be done because the top 2% are getting richer than ever before, and they control the very groups you call on to “fix it”… Their response? “But we already did, and it’s working very well”.

We need an entirely different mindset as a species, and we only do that when we become well educated, enlightened, and understand that “money and (alleged) scarcity” are the real problems… and are being used to enslave the masses for the benefit of the few. If you want a freer world where true freedom exists for everyone, you change gears and focus development on self-replicating production systems and more advanced robots. Once humans are not needed for production at all (our current problem is we’re in limbo where we still need substantial human labor, but not enough to keep everyone employed), THEN we can completely realign our world. Until then, we’ll be fighting the few who are holding the planet’s resources hostage and forcing us to live under a dead paradigm.

http://www.thevenusproject.com and http://www.thezeitgeistmovement.com .. For humanity, we’re stuck in a waiting game. Where we need to get to is kind of clear, and it is just as clear that the few benefiting the most won’t let us get there.. for now.

Welcome to Americorp. This is the land where liberals are criminals and the lower class is a parasite. Where, if you don’t watch Fox News, you don’t know the truth; education is socialist; speaking in complete sentences is too confusing; Walmart is your one stop shop for everything; McDonald’s is nutritious; and insurance companies tell you you aren’t eligible for care because you can buy drugs at Walmart and take care of yourself.

    From another post I made:

In my mind the sooner we realize that we are a second-rate thoroughly broke (and broken) country the better, then we can slash our military budget to be in line with those around the rest of the globe, the Chinese can take over the mantle of world policeman, and we can avoid any more useless and stupid wars. I’m not seeing the benefit of being the world’s sole “super power”. We can then focus our efforts on being the country that we claim we are.

I have thought many times over the last year that I should (if I had any money to do it) buy a whole bunch of Saudi Riyal (their currency) which is, if I am not mistaken, currently fixed to the dollar, and which will, upon decoupling from the dollar when the dollar’s value plummets and inflation grips the US, skyrocket in value. Backed by the massive oil reserves and revenue of that country, I feel the Riyal would be a sound investment. Now, if I just had some money, or a job, or some hope. I feel really bad for my kids, bringing them into this shit.

You’ll note that the “heating question” is not about actual resources, but access to them. The few are holding them hostage. We need to free the resources if we’re ever to get out of this mess. http://www.thevenusproject.com gets into it quite well. We need to shed this monetary system because it is only serving the few. We need to change the way we view the world and planetary resources if we’re to service everyone.

I was reading the chapter in “Dismantling the Empire” detailing the wanton destruction and looting of Iraqi antiquities during and after the invasion when he died. The chapter seems allegorical and is all the more heartbreaking for it : The antiquities are really the Iraqi people who were brutalized, murdered, tortured, jailed, blown to bits and burned by the hundreds of thousands, all justified by carefully crafted lies, and for absolutely nothing. So let there be no misunderstanding : The American people more than deserve whatever shit storm Nemesis is sending our way.

I have read Mr. Hedges book, “Death of the Liberal Class”. It is a very frightening glimpse of what has and is occuring in our Country. The Corporations of this country have led us to the tipping point of our society becoming a totalitarian regime, where democracy cannot survive the powers of the corporate world in collusion with our “leaders” of both Parties. The Wars we are fighting are not what we are led to believe by our government not by the general media, its nothing more than an attempt to help make corporations achieve more profits.

During the presidency of Reagan, America went from being the greatest creditor nation in the world, to the greatest debtor nation in the world. Where did all the money go? To the coffers of wealthy multi-national corporations, to invest in building up manufacturing in 3rd world countries, to blow up a lot of places and do a lot of nasty research, oh yeah, and to support the lifestyle Americans haven’t been able to quite afford since 1980.

“Can someone please explain to me why we would even want to have an empire of any sort?”

Erm, because it requires little kings, and the top 2% like being little kings over the serfs? .. If you mean “we”, the people.. we don’t want an empire, we just want to live our lives. Knowing that is how the little kings abused us into their ability to build an empire. If we want to get back to just “living our lives”, we’re going to have to act outside of what we ‘want to do’, but the little kings know basic psychology and know the average serf will never do that unless things get _really_ bad.. and even then, MOST won’t do shit… not with guns and sonic cannons pointed at them.

And you know what helps the little kings the MOST? convincing the masses that “it’s OK to suffer now, you’ll be rewarded after you die” is something they can believe in. Religion facilitates this shit more than anything.. “pray for change [but don't act]“.. “god loves you more [even though you're suffering and he won't do shit to stop it]“.. it goes on and on. Sane, rational societies are near impossible to control like we’re being controlled.

which is exactly why so few are willing to put their lives on the line. Would be heroes will be killed one by one, and no one will know about it. It becomes a futile waste of life and a sacrifice no sane person would be willing to make under current circumstances. Too many people glued to the idiot box and being fed lies on a regular basis, not enough truth and honesty being displayed for all to see.

There’s a reason the 1st Amendment protects the press, and a reason the ruling elite took control of it all.

Actually, Limbaugh said it all when he spewed “FDR is dead. His policies live on, but we’re in the process of doing something about that”. They want to get rid of the very policies that made us such a strong, vibrant country for a while. They are foolish and greedy to the point of national suicide. As long as THEY stay on top, they don’t give a flying rat’s ass how low they drive the 98% of us, THEY ARE ON TOP. And like Aesop said many centuries ago, “it’s better to rule in hell than serve in heaven”. They REFUSE to cooperate, they INSIST on ruling. It doesn’t matter to them that we slide right down into third world status from first. These people are the biggest traitors one could possibly ask for. I think they should all be locked up in their own for profit prisons and left there to rot.

The 60′s were just a convenient excuse to destroy our society. They don’t believe in democracy, freedom or anything else that we supposedly live for. They believe in ORDER, with THEM at the top and everyone else kissing their asses just to survive. Don’t kid yourself, this is all about MONEY and POWER, nothing else.

I believe in the Pendulum Theory of History and Empires. America is resilient, but it will hit a major economic/social/cultural bottom, much like that of a desperate alcoholic. The question is will we as a people have the guts to accept that and really change? Will we take to the streets? Will we face naked ugly truths on many levels about ourselves and our society? Will those of us who’ve bought into the shill of hatred of Liberals; of Big Government; of ‘high’ taxes’ of all the Corporate and Right Wing memes, finally see and accept the utter crap sandwich they’ve gleefully eaten for so long? I don’t know. Facing ugly truths is difficult, but no impossible. It’s happened before. The wild and horrific abuses of the Gilded Age didn’t last forever; Karl Rove’s Eternal GOP Majority faded quickly. The British Empire faded and contracted. Such a contraction of the American Empire and Ego wouldn’t be so bad either, but only if we finally grew up as a society and found our souls again. I don’t think I’ll live to see it. The Pendulum swings very slowly, but I’d like to have faith in my children and their generation. I’m teaching them what I can. Merry Christmas, all…

“I feel really bad for my kids, bringing them into this shit.”

That’s why I don’t want kids. I don’t understand how rational people could bring children into this miserable existence under these current circumstances. And it completely befuddles me how someone could have 6, 8, 10 kids.. Destroy the planet, much?

I have one daughter.. a serendipity I suppose.. and I’m doing my best to show her how to see beyond what’s being shown to her by this dysfunctional society. She does good, mostly, but texting and facebooking and other intentionally fabricated distractions make me wonder where she’ll end up. We have way too much ADOS in this country.. Attention Deficit.. Unless people start rising up America it is all over. You can see that our basic needs like education are being gutted to the point that local communities will have to close them. Basic services like Police, Fire and public works are being slashed. When progressives/liberals sat home on election day they didn’t realize that they sealed the fate of this country. Reagan opened the barn door slightly and bush left it fully open to let foxes in to destroy this country. I blame reagan and the right wing media for lying to people to think and vote against their best interests. RIP AMERICA.

He mocks me when I give leftover food to the homeless. So he throws the food away so I don’t see it . He is of the ilk that the bottom feeders need to die. Survival of the fittest. I hate it but keep my mouth shut because I have to pay my bills. Unfortunately those lucky souls still working probably feel like I do that we are lucky to have a job but inside we are seething. But I take comfort in the knowledge I am better than him in my heart.

When that happens to peons, we file bankruptcy. Don’t celebrate the end of America because if we go down, we take the rest of the world with us and we’re in a better position to survive on what we can produce than almost any other Country in the world. America could live on used consumer goods for a decade before we’d need to replace and 10,000 cottage industries would spring up overnight. It wasn’t that long ago that our Great grandparents opened up this country in ox carts. We can do it again if we have to.

The major part of the corporate coup d’état occurred on September 11, 2001. We MUST have an independent investigation into what happened on that day in order to save our Country.

    INVESTIGATE 9/11 NOW

It’s time for the whole world to stand up and help Americans save our freedom and constitution.

And by the way, CORPORATIONS ARE NOT PEOPLE……..AND DO NOT HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS…….like the corporate owned U. S. Supreme Court crazily tries to tell us.

Well Davey. Our money went to the corporations who have built new factories in the two largest populations in the world. There is a reason why we do not have an investigative news system in this country. If we saw what is happening in China and India we would look around and say “Why are we not rebuilding our infastructure” 1980 National Debt less than a Billion. The RayGun revolution was a corporate coupe. We are no better off than the USSR was in 1988.

The only positive thing I can see about it is that as our united soverign states in America begin to split up, Cali will be able to get all the welfare states off our backs and the ingnorant who live by the propoganda they get from the media and from their Fairy Tales they think are true can hit bottom. All that “I am Blessed” crap goes away real quick when hunger and despair kick in.

Just like the response from this christian fairy tale believing country when attacked, the downtrodden masses when hungry are not going to turn to their invisible providers for help. They are going into the streets where they will meet our corporate army who will collect them and take them to our corporate prisons where they will be fed the genetically engineered foods, seafood from the gulf and at some point good ol’solient green.

Merry Christmas Davey. I hope you enjoyed all the years that you did not have a clue as to what was happening around you. start growing your own food and get a bike, we will be the least traveled people in the idustrialized world. welcome to the New World Order, now take a number and go sit down

“We’ve undergone a corporate coup d’état in slow motion,” he said. “Our public education system has been gutted. Our infrastructure is corroding and collapsing. Unless we begin to physically resist, they are going to solidify neo-feudalism in this country.”

It’s time for a general strike. Stock up on food, water, and batteries folks. He’s right, we have to stop corporate hegemony.

Corporations, especially banks and energy companies, have to be limited in size by law, and must be legally excluded from politics.

The media have to give equal time to all candidates.

I absolutely agree with you: “Would be heroes will be killed one by one, and no one will know about it.” I have had much anxiety, grief, depression about not doing something – with my body (?) – to make a final stand. And then I think the same sentence you wrote. It doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t matter. It won’t matter. Hell, probably a majority of Amerikans think things are just ducky. And I have friends (former?) who still believe Obusha will save us. The only thing sustaining me now is my immediate family, the earth community, Joe Bageant, Carolyn Baker and the many writers, thinkers, journalists who are fighting the good fight. I am glad I never had children.

“We’ve undergone a corporate coup d’état in slow motion,” he said. “Our public education system has been gutted. Our infrastructure is corroding and collapsing. Unless we begin to physically resist, they are going to solidify neo-feudalism in this country.”

This guy is confused. You cannot be a part time revolutionary. I will repost what I said previously in regard to these amateur revolutionaries who think getting arrested is fighting or makes a difference.

“Typically speaking it does not make sense to be a subversive as an American citizen because you already have an ID card, a license, social security number, phone number and all that. They already know everything about you so you can never be an effective subversive.

The effective subversives will be Mexican gangsters, foreigners who come with false identities, who don’t have friends, who don’t have lives to leave behind, who spend years training in camps for subversives where they learned what they need to know. Professional subversives are not kids coming from their safe suburban neighborhoods who think in their 20s they want to take on the government who had 20+ years to gather information about them, who knows where they live, what they look like, what their name is, has their DNA and finger print and can track them on satellite and through all technical means.

I hope you understand that if Americans can’t do something basic like start mafias and gangs without being locked up in prison, what makes you think they can fight a revolution under that kind of law enforcement scrutiny, and under that kind of counter intelligence? Look at a prison and you see all the subversives who thought they could fight back and stand up for themselves, they are the casualties of the revolution, and the ones who aren’t in prison are dead.

I guess because most of them are poor and black or brown, nobody recognizes the history of the whole situation. When white teenagers start trying to be subversives they’ll find themselves facing the same shit and of course they wont know how to deal with it.”

“Revolutions aren’t led from the bottom, they are lead from the top. Until the establishment decides it’s time for a revolution then you’ll just have a bunch of subversives who will be locked up and killed off.

If these subversives had any power we’d see some positive effects from their actions. The fact that we don’t means they are loud and powerless. Siding with them will just speed up your demise unless there is a truly organized resistance and in that case it wouldn’t be people online, it wouldn’t be hackers, it would be people with the power to kill, willing to die, and highly educated, rich, etc. Essentially it would be the intelligence operatives trained to lead revolutions, and the rich benefactors.

I’m not an intelligence operative. I’m not a revolutionary. I’ve never shot a gun, I don’t know how to make IED’s, I would just get killed. So would the majority of you. Let the professional mercenaries and soldiers handle it and stay out of it.”

That’s right, we are in the latter stages of a concerted effort to destroy the last vestiges of the middle and working class and of democracy in the U.S. This is more than mere greed or the irrational exuberance of the speculative class. This is about establishing a 21st century neo-feudalism where the vast majority of people become not serfs bound to the land (as in medieval feudalism), but are instead bound by debt that they labor to service for their entire lives. We have devolved from citizens, to consumers (fueled by debt), and finally into debt slaves.

This interview with Michale Hudson succinctly describes this process:

    http://michael-hudson.com/2010/12/deficit-hawks-one-two-punch/

Michale Hudson is one of the few economists who consistently identifies the realities surrounding the gutting of the American economy by the parasitical financial oligarchs. Unlike most economists, he is an economic historian and brings an insight and perspective that few others seem able to do.

This is not directed against the American people but against the syndicate which was allowed to highjack the United States government. The real terrorists are deep within your own structures. A flash event will be generated for use that will create a political and economic vortex. The 21st American Revolution just started. It is all inter-connected. The Asians are the ones who will push the US over the cliff after the bankers themselves stepped to the edge by blowing themselves up. The WikiLeaks information comes from several hard drives from DeutscheBank and Goldman Sachs. The hard drives where handed over by a Goldman midlevel banker whom the European authorities had in custody in reference to the Euro 350 billion fraud Goldman Sachs engineered for the Greek Govt’s Treasury Department. The evidence that is piling up all over the place is incomprehensible. The big break was a top Kaupthing Bank executive from Iceland & Luxembourg, who led the investigators to the right back doors to lift data out of the systems. They found that the mega-banks are operating a shadow world with its very own bookkeeping and back-office set up, all totally off-balance sheet and out of sight and reach of the regulators. Those two systems, the overt and covert, have disconnected and are ripping the system to shreds. It is basically a mega-Madoff scheme that they are running, only a thousand times bigger. Madoff’s game was a satellite office that blew up when it was not properly supervised. The blowback was and is horrific since the entire system is now cratering.
The WikiLeaks site is being fed the information obtained from deep inside the system. There are people inside who very well understand that the system can only be brought down from the inside out. Witness how they hit Hillary Clinton by exposing her spy instructions to the US diplomats worldwide. In the latest Wall Street Pentagon Papers, the people were told that data was allegedly released by the babyface soldier, of rank private.. The papers reveal a $12 trillion unauthorized grant to global bankers as the hidden part of the TARP Fund used for buying up global assets after the price ambush following the Lehman Brothers failure. The flow of data comes from the top, not the bottom. The data grab required access with three passwords to enter the archives, something only known to 4-star generals at the Pentagon. The access was not through hacking but through opendoor access with proper credentials. Beware of a military Coup d’Etat going on in America and no one gets it. Next, WikiLeaks will next go global and viral in pure decentralized fashion. Thousands of WikiLeaks will be set up in lightning speed that will be fed from a central invisible source, which then publishes simultaneously all over the world. Their counter-attack retaliation against those who assisted on the WikiLeak crackdown is impressive [credit card companies]. Things don’t just happen; they are allowed to happen. Problem-Reaction-Solution.”

◄$$$ THE WIKILEAKS SCANDAL COMES FROM INSIDE THE USMILITARY WITH PASSWORD CLEARANCE AND THE USBANKS FROM ABSCONDED DISK DRIVES. THE BANK SOURCE EXTENDS FROM A FAILED ICELAND BANK AND PROSECUTION WITH THE KAUPTHING BANKER, WHO HAS TURNED STATE EVIDENCE. A PLOT TO RESTORE THE USGOVT FROM INSIDE SOURCES IS UNDERWAY. A BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD & EVIL IS APACE IN A GRAND BLOWBACK AFTER 911 AND THE $TRILLION MORTGAGE BOND FRAUD. A SOURCE WITH GREAT TIES TO BANKS, MILITARIES, AND SECURITY SYSTEMS PROVIDED SOME INSIGHT. $$$

“The Anglo American fraud and genocide cartel will be exposed. WikiLeaks was just a teaser. The Boyz took the bait, exposed their reaction profile, and aligned the forces, leaving it vulnerable. We agree on not having kids. This is a complete mess we live in. A bowl of shit.

That being said, I don’t take seriously people who know nothing about the life of real subversives talking about how they want to stand up to government. This guy should go live in Mexico and discuss with the Mexican drug cartels how to go against government.

If he’s afraid to sit with these people or if he cannot speak spanish and several other languages he will be completely useless as a subversive. He is a cheerleader.

Real subversives wont speak just english. Real subversives won’t be afraid to kill and have been trained to kill. Real subversives don’t have families, don’t have names, don’t have identities and I mean it in the literal sense. Real subversives don’t love, don’t fear, and most importantly real subversives don’t work day jobs where they pay taxes to the government they claim to be fighting against.

None of the vocal liberal types are real subversives because if they were they wouldn’t be talking to the media. Do you think gang members are going to talk to the media about their plans for revolution? Do you see whats left of the italian mafia doing that? or the triads? or al qaeda? They are paramilitary forces and they have their own intelligence and their own army.

The problem with dealing with “the people” and “revolution” is none of us got to sit down with the Godfathers of the various mafias to discuss who will get what when they take power. So unless you are seated at the table of the underworld elite, you’ll be a peasant after the revolution just as you were before.

I apologize. I’m not attacking the writer; I’m attacking the editor, who proudly put his name on this article.

I let 99.9999% of the errors I see slide, but I occasionally have to let off a little grammar- and spelling-related steam or I’ll end up in a loony bin. Now that it’s out of my system, I feel a little better (except I always feel guilty afterward).

Just yesterday at the local market a guy was arrested for making “terrorist threats”. He was angry at being fired and said he was going to “do something scary”.

The line between pissed off citizen and terrorist is actually quite small these days. No accident if you ask me………….. Example: just how long has FOX been running the TV show Cops? That show was designed to showcase Americans rights being tossed out the door. It was designed so that Americans would get used to our Fascist State.

Then again maybe it is not a conspiracy; Put enough like minded people in power and they don’t even have to talk about their total disdain for the Constitution.

    ODOAFII,

You are right on the money with your observation of interdependence. I laugh every time I see some writer or talking head try to pose China as a threat to America. They have no understanding of the economic relationship between the two countries when they say those things. China is more dependent upon us for their survival that we are on them for our credit line.

Over 30% of their total GDP is shipped to the US and over 40% of their financial assets are dollar denominated. If they got into a trade war with the US their economy would collapse. If they tried to dump US bonds not only would they be cutting their own fiscal nose off to spite their face the resulting drop in the value of the dollar would reduce exports to the US leading to a economic meltdown in THEIR country.

Ya see my friends China is not OUR economic drug dealer they are our BUYER. If they tried to stop selling their goods to our economic markets the withdrawal symptoms would be severe and in a country on the edge of drowning in its own sewage and currently choking on its air the only thing keeping the society from erupting in mass protest is their economic expansion and the lure of consumerism. If that expansion has even the slightest hiccup and you WILL have a 2nd cultural revolution!
As for the demise of America…well that started when Bill Casey flew to Paris to make the deal with the Iranians to hold the hostages until after the 1980 election. When and how it ends is as Mr. Hedges says is difficult to time. I can only hope that we split into three or four countries; East Coast, West Coast, The South and the Red Central states. I get GREAT satisfaction knowing that the South and Central Red states will have to get by without the wealth of the two coast countries.

I have one daughter and one granddaughter. Granddaughter and I are working on her learning how to survive with little money. What worries me is that my generation is the last to have any understanding of how to cut back. From the middle of the Baby Boom on, they don’t have a clue.

Hey aghast – I have two friends that bailed out to Costa Rica and they love it. One went before I bailed out to Russia and the other after I’d been out of there for some time.
I’m staying here and never returning, at least not against my will. Living is so easy outside of the land of fear mongering and Big Brother! Have you noticed that only in the US there is talk of terrorists under every bed and around every shadow? And they are the only country that has the ‘fear of god’ and is the only country that even mentions that one world government. I have been out of the states long enough to see that even the daily advertising there is part of the psyops and helps spread the fear of everything.
Besides, I have clean food, free of very inexpensive medical (my choice) and just last week friends of my wife’s family butchered a beef cow and we were given 20 kilograms of prime beef – no hormones or chemicals – only grass fed.

This Nation is IMHO to broken to fix. Most of The People are all on mind neutralizing medications, drugs or alcohol to bother to fight.

Does anyone want to guess why there is a push to make pot legal? Because it saps your desire to fight. A stoned nation will NEVER rise up against their Government.

Just six years ago I told people that our economic collapse was engineered and underway. I was told to move to another Country if I did not love the U.S.A.

I love my “Homeland” I would fight to defend it from any enemy on our soil. One small problem. While this may be “Homeland” it sure as hell does not belong to me or anyone that thinks like me.
