‘Homeland’ security coming to hotels, malls

WASHINGTON – The United States is stepping up security at “soft targets” like hotels and shopping malls, as well as trains and ports, as it counters the evolving Al-Qaeda threat, a top official said Sunday.

A year after a foiled plot to bomb a US-bound passenger plane, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told CNN’s “State of the Union” program that other places and modes of transportation must now be scrutinized.

“We look at so-called soft targets — the hotels, shopping malls, for example — all of which we have reached out to in the past year and have done a fair amount of training for their own employees,” Napolitano said.

Since an attempted bombing on a packed Saturday night in Times Square in May, New York, for example, has installed hundreds of security cameras as part of a plan to triple the number of cameras to 3,000.

In September, the city activated some 500 new surveillance cameras at its three busiest subway stations — Times Square, Penn Station and Grand Central.

“The overall message is everything is objectively better than it was a year ago, particularly in the aviation environment. But we’re also looking at addressing other areas,” Napolitano said.

As extremists struggle to circumvent tighter security at airports and search for new avenues, she said US officials were looking to step up broader measures.

“What we have to do is say, well, what other ways are they thinking to commit an act, because our job is not only to react, but to be thinking always ahead, what could be happening,” Napolitano said.

“And so we have enhanced measures going on at surface transportation, not because we have a specific or credible threat there, but because we know, looking at Madrid and London, that’s been another source of targets for terrorists.”

Suicide bombers killed 52 people aboard a bus and three London Underground trains in 2005.

And in Europe’s worst terror attack, 191 people were killed and nearly 2000 injured in Madrid in March 2004 when 10 backpacks filled with nails and explosives went off on four trains during morning rush hour.

“It means, as we make the land borders harder to cross from a land border crossing standpoint, that we need to be looking out into our coasts and to the waters,” said Napolitano.

Last Christmas, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a young Nigerian who claims to have been trained by Al-Qaeda operatives in the Yemen, failed to detonate explosives concealed in his underwear on a packed transatlantic airliner as it came in to land in Detroit.

The US authorities responded by installing new screening machines and initiating draconian body searches at airports.

Napolitano said international travelers in the United States also face tight intelligence screening even before they reach the boarding gate.

In the US we need to stop with the smoke & mirrors approach of “homeland” security (sounds way too much like “fatherland” and you know the rest.

What about “soft” targets like chemical plants in proximity to densely populated areas? What about security on the ground crew at airports? If there was a “real” terrorist threat, wouldn’t these be more important than big brother cameras at shopping malls?

The day is coming that to enter a Mall or other public venue will require us to be scanned or “patted down” to “keep us safe.” The Police State is here to stay… We lost the “War on Terror” as it is “We The People” who are now being terrorized by our own government.

Isn’t it great to live in a democracy???

Yep, fascism has come to America.

Now we won’t escape DHS’s presence in our lives. Malls, trains, bus stations, subway platforms, libraries, etc will be under surveillance by DHS. Soon they’ll know what type of underwear you wear and what books you buy & sign out at the library. Your entire medical history will be on their profile of you. Other biometric info will be presented to some DHS employee once you step outside your home, much like the movie Minority Report starring Tom Cruise.

Sadly, now that I think about it, this is already happening. Our government believes we will simply sigh and accept it. What’s worse, many will.

Land of the free, home of the brave my ass.

Our gov’t looks at the Brits and their mouths start to water. They would LOVE to have cameras on every street corner, watching us from the minute we leave the house and until we go back home. This is insanity. They can’t search through the info they have already, and now they want to spy on us even MORE? They can pretty much guarantee that they will miss whatever clues might be there, just because there is SO much CRAP they have to look at.

They won’t be happy until they are watching and listening in on every minute of our lives. So much for freedom, and I hope that I BORE THEM to death.

… This is not about security . This is about controlling the population by any means necessary . Fear is the tool of choice . Stay scared and don’t ask any questions . That’s what the authorities need you to know .

FINALLY… a way to stop the creeping crud called malls. Will Homeland Suckurity dismantle the ugly things and return the neighborhoods to some dignity?

And send all those trinkets back to China. All you need is an organic grocery, a few independent retail stores and the internet. Done. Life goes on quite well.

I wonder when “big business” is going to realize that “bigger business” and Janet the Child Molester is after them also? Like the mob, it eats its own, eventually. (What am I saying, “like” the mob?)

Back when I wrote that they should install security pat downs as medical procedures at the malls I was being sarcastic. It was a joke. Ms Napolitano, please don’t misunderstand my criticism, and expansion of paranoid imaginings of an invasive corporatist state, as instructions for expansion of intrusive security measures. It was only intended as a sarcastically extreme scenario. Jesus, before you know it they will be installing scanners on bridges and tunnels into New York City. ooops, sorry about that NYC.

America’s domestic spy program focuses on malls now. Guess there weren’t enough vegan and anti-war groups to spy on. Now we can focus on teenagers buying trinkets in dollar stores. What a waste of money. Terrorist groups operate in the open in America and Fatherland Security looks the other way.

Ok to answer this question you may think I am some flake.
The answer can be found in the tactics that these neurotics are taking in so called protecting us. They use FEAR to motivate us. The fear of death is the strongest motivator there is and is our first most primal instinct.
Any ways to get to the point, Love is the answer and alleviates fear. Somehow give love a chance by getting people to love each other thus you eliminate fear.
You love them by telling the truth like wikileaks is doing. By helping them lift their spirits and burdens . By giving them a vision of a world that they would like to live in and then lead them there. By going to the courts and trying to get justice. By demonstrating peacefully and leading others. So many ways but it will only cost you, your life
Are you ready for this? Can you walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

I disagree that there is nowhere to go, or that resistance is futile. There are plenty of places to go if you are well-off or creative, e.g., there are opportunities to teach English in lots of places.

Resistance is not necessarily futile either. That is the message of modern epics like Star Wars and LOTR. People will eventually rise up, but often only have incredible hardship and with great difficulty.

So chose whether you want to take the relatively simple way out, or be a patriot and stay and resist oppression in the belly of the tiger.

Great post canadaeh, it’s a shame that thinking like your’s is considered radical, when it ought to be the norm.

A battle is won by defeating an element with it’s opposite. Water stops fire, generosity stops poverty, love stops war. Yeah, you gotta protect yourself, and the place you live, but when you do it in a humane way that respects the rest of the world, you have a lot more friends helping so the burden is lighter.

When enough individuals do the right thing, a critical mass is reached and things will change. You want change? Change yourself. If you HAVE changed, be an example to others.
Those words were paraphrased, and I don’t remember who to credit them to which is too bad because, I think they constitute the most important idea on the planet!

Happy New Year, Let’s work this SHIT OUT!

If you dislike it, go back in time and get the supreme court to have made a more honest decision – like an honest one. and while you’re at it, consider the evils of your personal voting decisions. But I suppose from your comment that your big concern is the possibility that business (selling chinese crap) in malls may decline.

What utterly dishonest bullshit. Napolitano would have us believe that it’s for national security when in actuality it’s a Big Brother move.

The next step is, “Your papers, please.”

We’re treading on dangerous ground when the government uses ‘double speak’ against it’s citizens. This has been planned for years now and 911 made all this possible thanks to the Bush Crime Family.

Honestly, I fear for my family, relatives and the younger generation. More specifically my nieces and nephews and those under the age of thirty. As for my wife and I, we can take care of ourselves in case of a fascist takeover of our government. We’ve made plans.

I never liked malls anyway. I’m glad the government is doing all it can to make them obsolete.

Its just too bad they have to rely on fabrications and phantoms to end what is merely an aesthetic blight.

If terrorists really wanted to attack Americans in malls through out the U.S., they could have done this starting the day after all the airports implemented higher security measures in response to 9/11. And since there hasn’t been a single terror attack at a mall in the U.S. over the past 9 years, one can easily conclude that terrorists really aren’t all that interested in attacking Americans. The police state is here and most Americans are so stupid that they are in favor of it.

The police state would *not* be here if very few, if any, individuals in the US were willing to be employed as government enforcers carrying out the orders of Department of Homeland Security, or any other branch of the State.

Please keep the following in mind always. The politicians and bureaucrats – rulers – do *not* get out into the field and enforce their own legislation/decrees/mandates/etc or even their own opinions. Instead they depend on the enforcers to do the dirty work. Therefore the enforcers are the key!! Politicians and bureaucrats simply talk and write, even when it is to give orders – whether to enforcers or directly to ordinary citizens (via snail and email pronouncements for the latter).

Strong negative Social Preferencing – withdrawal or refusal of voluntary association with the reasons made public – towards government enforcers who continue in that role after attempts to logically persuade them of their errors (offers of assistance in obtaining new productive jobs is a good idea for those known personally), is the needed step. Public identification (photos, names and location) of these continuing government enforcers will enable others to also Socially Preference against them, thereby increasing the social pressure to change their employment, their major interaction behavior – use cellphone cameras and the Internet to the fullest. This selective (discriminating) association to exclude those who cause harm is a potentially *very* powerful method of non-violent action, referred to as ostracism by many down through the ages. It is included in Gene Sharp’s 2nd volume (of 3), “The Politics of Nonviolent Action”, Chapter 4, “The Methods of Social Noncooperation”.

Even in the current very unfree societies (of which the US is a major one), negative Social Preferencing can be effectively used to influence individual social behavior and the actions of the State. I have written about this practice in general – http://selfsip.org/focus/protestsnotenough.html
There is much more that can be done beyond groaning, hand wringing, clenching jaws and writing online comments of complaint. One need not – and should not, if thinking in one’s own long range best interest – accept as inevitable the latest government pronouncements in regards to “security” plans.

That is very hopeful thinking. While there may be, I do not know of any totalitarian regime that ran out of secret police. Nor am I aware that the Nazi’s had trouble finding enough concentration camp guards. In the U.S., you can look at the most extreme and hateful political candidates, or the apparently least intelligent, or the relatively most insane who seems disconnected from reality, and very meaningful segments of the population almost inevitably are there to support them if they are associated with a major political party, particularly one starting with an R, and rarely with less than 30 percent of the voting public at an extreme. Relying that the government, should it be taken over by bad elements, not be able to find enough participants to round you up, oversee your confinement or torture you is not a very good plan.

I haven’t watched television since last century, which is well over 10 years and counting. I cannot express to you the peace and quiet alone that abandoning television and its incessant 24.7 commercial droning has brought to our household. I don’t miss the so-called entertainment. Anything worth watching is available commercial free on video. I do not own a working television. My only televisions are pre-digital and are used solely as a hookup for the nintendo and ps3. The only time I am ever exposed to television is when I visit the doctor’s office, which thank heaven, is infrequently. When I do, however, I find a seat furthest away from the endless din and try my best to ignore it. I do not miss television whatsoever.

Things that kill more people than terrorism every year:
    - Dogs
    - Bad seafood
    - Falls from ladders
    - Tylenol
    - Undercooked meat
    - About a thousand other, more realistic threats

This is an absurdly disproportionate response to a minor threat.

In today’s world of instant communication via the Internet with virtually all parts of the globe, let alone across the US, the technical capability to publicly identify government enforcers and their supporters is considerable as well as communicating one’s actions of negative Social Preferencing. Consequently, the capability for successful dissuasion of large numbers of actual enforcers from government employment by ceasing to voluntarily associate with them is far greater than any that was attempted in the past. And this same dissuasion applies to those simply considering such employment.

After actually reading my linked article, I strongly suggest that you read some of the historical instances of successful social non-cooperation – French and Norwegians against the occupying Germans, for instance – keeping in mind the added enormous advantages of today’s technology.

Lastly, why would you even *want* to voluntarily associate or exchange any value with a person who is or would be a government enforcer or even support such people/actions?

The BBC did a documentary on Al-Qaeda. It explains that Al-Qaeda was an invention by the US justice system to be able to prosecute terrorist suspects under the laws that had been used to prosecute the Mafia. In order to do that the terrorists had to be part of an organization, and so Al-Qaeda was invented. Google: bbc al qaeda does not exist

    Greetings,

You know, there wouldn’t have been any of this if they had followed the less intrusive rules they had in place before. Why was Abdulmutallab let on an airplane without a passport? Why didn’t someone realize that Nigerians traveling without luggage or a passport holding a one-way ticket paid for in cash, shouldn’t be allowed to fly to the United States? How come I have to suffer an invasion of privacy just to go fly somewhere because they guys have to initiate “draconian” measures in response to their ineptitude? Why am I being punished for their mistakes?

Guess what, it isn’t going away. Each of these new measures, whether it be cameras in our cities or naked peek-a-boo in our airports, is here to stay. Not only that, these guys are allowing lobbyists to write tens of thousands of pages of new laws – laws the Congress doesn’t even bother to read, that are slowly setting a legal framework to enslave the poor.

Those with money will still get to live in the land of the free as they can afford to jump through every loophole in the 150000 pages of federal and tax law that govern us. I don’t believe a single human could ever read all of it.

I see were you’re coming from, but have you considered the abolition of net neutrality? If the powers that be see net neutrality as something that is working against them, then they will abolish it. As I write this, it’s almost certain that Homeland Security is reading someone’s emails and listening to someone’s conversation on a cell phone.

It’s also possible that government enforcers could be your next door neighbor working undercover without exposing themselves to this fact.

However, people are smart enough to get around the laws and communicate ‘illegally’ using the net by hacking though government filters.

*Sigh* I feel like we have to watch out for ourselves by looking over our shoulders at the intruding government. I honestly never thought I’d be writing something such as the above.

True enough about McCain/Palin. We would have been better off though, as this way they’ve taken the slow, deliberate route and made use of a “constitutional scholar” to make sure all those pesky rights are taken away nice and legal and the law changed to fit.

Not far off. I’m guessing quite a bit of mall-land real estate could be transferred to the banks once business falls off enough.

Not far off. I’m guessing quite a bit of mall-land real estate could be transferred to the banks once business falls off enough.

There is no invasion of privacy when you follow a being that is everywhere and knows everything. As for abrogation of rights, that’s the way an individual would think, not someone dedicated to the good of the flock. Seriously, why do you think Christianism (hate based theism) has been doing so good lately? People have been raised to think that way. It’s 1984 pushed through the pulpit, man…

“What we have to do is say, well, what other ways are they thinking to commit an act, because our job is not only to react, but to be thinking always ahead, what could be happening”

For the record the “they” in that statement are all of the people who finally decide to go nuts after “our” government puts the final nail in our economic coffin and hands we “citizens” over to the corporations as uncompensated slaves for sustenance. There is not, nor has there ever been a Al-Qaeda, Easter bunny or Santa claws.

Your comment suggests a interesting possibility.

Terrorists need a concentration of individuals to make their violent acts effective. If consumers decide to avoid crowds and shop at smaller stores outside malls so they won’t be part of a target, stand-alone retailers might have a bright future. And the possibility of being bombed or groped also might send travelers to their cars rather than public transportation. Both of these could raise the demand for gasoline and increase the western presence in the oil producing regions. Infidels in Arab lands is what set-off the terrorists in the first place but their response to it may only make it worse.

That is a fantastic idea — the only impediment being the Republicrat political “leadership” in the country who are not doing this for terrorism purposes, but rather to keep all of us under surveillance. They are not putting microwave cannons on the backs of Humvees to combat terrorism — those are for us.

Not only that, it’s just not conducive to soliciting bribes. Can you even imagine Obama embarking on a campaign to stay away from big box multi-national retail empires to shop at the local mom&pop stores? WalMart is from Arkansas, don’t forget.

If people decide to drive more, they’ll be installing surveillance equipment on every block under the pretense that someone could load up a vehicle with explosives. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, if we let people like Napolitano run without resistance, we’ll soon make the former Soviet Union look like Haight Ashbury in the 60s.

That’s because they have something to protect, and it isn’t protecting us from terrorists. Let’s face it: as bad as it is, far more people die quietly every year from the flu than from all the terrorists attacks so far combined. Far more die of simple lack of health care, yet we aren’t spending this kind of money throwing the health insurance CEOs in prison for fraud.

They’re peddling that fear so we readily accept being monitored, like a flock of fucking sheep. They want to monitor us — our movements, our conversations, our emails, our web searches, our library records, our hard drives, our postal mails, our very bodies — because they know that the wealthy have a lot to protect, and once the shit hits the fan, there’s going to be a lot of very unhappy Americans who had the sheer audacity to think themselves above living in a discarded appliance carton outside some McMansion and shitting in an open ditch.

They now have a term for fighting for what’s ours: “home grown terrorism.” We heard Sean Hannity and the idiot chorus on Fox calling anyone who didn’t support Bush’s war for oil a terrorist, so it doesn’t take an act of violence, merely speech that violates the fascist guidelines.

Oh, by the way,. it wasn’t infidels in Arab lands so much that caused their radicalization, but infidels who support brutal dictatorships who sign oil deals to enrich themselves and to pay their goons to subjugate the population with force — not to mention the Arabs we decide to slaughter with our own hand or by equipping Israel with weapons.

The Terrorists must be so jealous of our Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
UAV’s easily fit into the millions of shipping containers that enter US ports each year.

Blow up a supermarket, a few suburban homes, a couple gas stations – all in one month, from the comfort of your computer console. Make Americans fearful of shopping for food, staying home, or buying gasoline – constant fear from death from above. Give a whole region depression and insomnia.

I hear it’s working great in Pakistan.

You are correct. I read a comment following the story in the Wash. Post about lawmakers taking ‘campaign contributions aka bribes’ while key votes are going on. Just more of what we already know but specific examples.

The comments following the piece were good. One suggested we make this year, 2011 THE YEAR of PROTEST.

I have been making a list of protests that i intend to carry out. First- I won’t shop multinational corps and i will inform them of that, frequently.
Second- I will continue to tell every business with Fox News on a public tv why i am not spending money in their place.
    Third- Fuck Flying, I’ll drive.
Fourth- spread the word. It is probably our last chance to take a stand.
Fifth- I am listening for suggestions from others. I’m old but i can still stand in the street with a sign. Pete Seeger is still doing it. God Bless him.

The Answer to 1984 is 1776. They are not helping us or protecting us they are only killing our country one step at a time. The Evolutionary Death of American is beginning to crumble before our very eyes. We must peacefully but aggressively resist a police state / surveillance society before we lose everything that makes this country great. The “HOMELAND SECURITY” (a nazi term) is going to have a fight on their hands if they feel they can strip of us of all of our decency and constitutional rights under the guise of National Security. When I use the term “fight” I don’t mean literally, I mean a fight under the law of the land through peacefully but aggressively protesting and resisting these draconian measures. Study after study after study have demonstrated that the surveillance cameras “DO NOT” provide additional security or curtail crime. And isn’t amazing that whenever a crime does occur when the gov’t or police overstep their lawful boundries the cameras were mysteriously not working. So much for accountability.

What was all this crap about the ‘great lame duck” Obama had. Anyone notice what his HSA is up to?
“Al Queda”, directly translated , means “the database”. We continue to use this bogeyman chase to justify the police state. IF anyone believes that all these 19 year olds, set up and bribed by the FBI to push the button on fake explosives are a “threat”, I have a bridge for them. And if anyone believes there is anything worth preserving in the democrats or Obama administration, I will argue with them as well. Notice there is no challenge in this article to the ridiculous premise that this is “justified” because of the “elevated” threat – apparently the administration is unaware of how widespread the ridicule for the FBI “stings” actually is. More likely, they just don’t care.

Despite all the cries of “Police state” and “Big Brother” active surveillance is the wave of the future. Count on it. Passive surveillance, where crimes get recorded on video and reviewed after the fact is going to be outdated. Security is going to be one of the top industries and employers.
It’s going to be the job of millions of people to sit and watch monitors and to alert the police of anything suspicious or any crime taking place. Police response is going to be immediate.
The technology is there, it’s happening, and that’s the way it’s going to be despite any and all objection.

What you failed to mention is that bin Laden was, and probably still is under the CIA. Another interesting note, Operation Northwood (A CIA op proposed during the 60′s) bears a striking resemblance to what happened on 9/11. The only real difference to that op and what happened was that Muslim extremists were blamed, instead of Cuban’s.

They control communication, the constabulary, and spy at will. They used the power, at the beginning of the Iraq ramp up, to block west coast nuns, heading to DC to demonstrate against war with Iraq. A group of patriots, just staged a protest and were arrested, with nary a report from the oligarchs media. If a serf falls in a field, and no one hears them cry out, does it make any difference? Communication is the true gold, of freedom and power. Without balance, there is anarchy, or tyranny. The oligarchs will be relentless in their efforts to stifle the internet, and control the message. They are already pushing to abolish the FCC. They have the money, to pay stiffs like Limbaugh and Hannity, hundreds of millions of dollars a year to shill for them, to a brainwashed, go along to get along audience.

We can stop the mall stuff fairly easily – buy everything (or as much as you can) online. Also notify ALL the stores in your mall of what you will be doing. When the stores in the malls see a large drop in sales, THEY will force the Gestapo to leave (and/or the mall will close for lack of business).

  • Mr. Neutron

It’s interesting that Operation Northwoods and Operation Mongoose are so unknown to 99% of the American public:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

These 1962 documents were only made public on November 18, 1997, by the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board, so it’s only been 13 years or so for Americans to find out about them and digest what this means. Takes time for knowledge to filter out to the Heartland.

Back in 1962 they were proposing using unmanned drone aircraft that would be painted and numbered to exactly duplicate civil registered aircraft, so they could blow it up for propaganda purposes, to outrage Americans and get them onboard for a war with Cuba .. and that’s just one of many such proposals.

The plan was drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signed by Chairman Lyman Lemnitzer and sent to the Secretary of Defense. The plan was rejected only at the level of President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Imagine what happens when these kinds of plans are presented to Republican Presidents, especially ignorant ones like George W. Yeah, imagine what new propaganda tricks were possible in 2001, to get the American public outraged and calling for a war, after W. was elected based on a rightwing Supreme Court decision that overturned the Florida election results.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ADGTKVZCFU2SNNTINJJ6VCYEUU Cowboy Bebop

    Note to all Yanks!!!
If you are interested in stopping all so called ‘Terrorist’ activities, the solution is very simple and straight forward. No need for massive ‘security’ expenditures, suppression of human rights and so on……simply STOP murdering other people, STOP invading and destroying their nations and STOP pillaging and plundering their lands!!! In other words stop your evil criminal activities and your support for them and then perhaps the world will become a safer place for everyone.
Besides these so called ‘security’ measures are as much for enhancing the ‘safety’ of Amerikans as Amerika’s murderous barbaric wars are for ‘Freedom’ and ‘Democracy’. There is no relation whatsoever. This enhanced ‘security’ is to strengthen the police-surveillance state apparatus for purposes of political and social repression.

  • http://www.bobcatarts.com Robert Gandy

If I can see it attached to a building or on top of a pole, it’s in the public space. Things in the public space invite questions:

Is anyone documenting where these new surveillance state cameras are popping up and displaying them on maps?

What is their effective range and resolution?

How long are the images/video stored, by whom, and how are they analyzed?

    Are they actively monitored?

Do they record audio as well?

There is no need for secrecy on these cameras in the visual public space. In fact, it’s better not to hide what they do and how. I need to know the spec’s on these cameras for my own safety. If I know where they cover and how far, I can choose to travel within these areas, knowing I’m being watched and protected. Would I rather carry a cash deposit for my business to the bank along a route that is watched by police or along one that the police can react to after the fact?

Of course there are also all those pesky “rights” that need protecting, or something…

Because I oppose all forms of violence & bloodshed. That’s why. And anybody who resorts to those measures is not on the same side as I am. It’s only through Peaceful Civil Disobedience will we achieve the results we desire. The power is in knowledge, our voice and using the laws of the land to bring about real change. Yes the system is flawed but if we continue to unite we will have certain victory in the end. I’ve chosen my side of non-violence and I encourage “ALL” to do the same. In fact, I never had to make a choice…I’ve always been on the side of right.

Doesn’t matter. Government surveillance will continue to expand until it is everywhere- including right outside the mom and pop stores. Today, that bitches’ face may be on the Walmart monitors, tomorrow “big sister” will be on monitors everywhere.

Today, people say “just don’t fly”; but tomorrow there will be checkpoints at train stations and bus stops. Then random pedestrian friskings and roadway checkpoints.

This is just another step in the encroaching American police state. The American people need to “draw a line in the sand” and say NO MORE. This tyranny needs to stop.

While I agree with comments here, about being overly careful in shopping malls is unnecessary.
Well, turn the situation around, what if, they didn’t think of putting more security cameras and then something tragic happened again, we’d all be yelling at our government, asking for Janet Reno to step down because she and her department were not dilligent enough! Can’t have it both ways – I’d rather be cautious than be like a bull – full speed ahead. Just look at what might have happened in NYC this past spring with that car bomb. Good thing people start to take notice of unsual vehicles, etc. It certainly saved lives.

There was a mobile watch tower in the parking lot. There were cops everywhere, on scooters – all dressed in black, with helmets, cruising throughout the mall. There were cops in the restrooms. I’ve never seen anything like it but it sure looked like police state tactics. It was horrible. The first time I see a monitor with big sis barking out “messages” in walmart (or any other retail outlet) it will be the last time I set foot in that store.

“next you’ll be telling us that an US/Israeli attack on Iran will DIMINISH our coward’s security rather than ENHANCE it”

    Damned right it will

The price of oil will quadruple overnight

The terrorist response will make 9/11 look like just another day.

Without UN approval the rest of the world will boycott us too.

Yeah just destroy our economy and start another world war just to soothe your itch.

The NY example was caught by a taxi driver. The cameras and scanners just make big money for the manipulating fear mongering low life that sells them. Those dirty fascists do not save lives… they kill — Their “unnecessary” war on Iraq was “based on a series of lies”, and it killed more than ONE MILLION Iraqis, mostly women and children, There was “zero” real intelligence linking Iraq to 9-11. Wolfowitz and others will surely be put on trial for their colossal crimes in pushing that monstrous war.

Just read what Joint Chiefs chairman Gen Hugh Shelton says about that war.

“You are demented for thinking that Big Brother is your cuddly protective friend.”

Demented, perhaps, but he’s no friend of mine.

I’m making the argument for full disclosure about what the cameras do, who runs them and how, since they aren’t going away any time soon.

I demand transparency for these devices and their masters, as transparency of my actions and my life is demanded of me.

You bring up a great point: If you know where I am, then you know where I’m not. Why do a no-knock search when I’m home? Why not wait til you know I’m gone? It’s easier to plant evidence that way (for example).

I am not in favor of the all-seeing eye. I’m not afraid of it, either.

There is a difference between the vigilance of aware citizens and a surveillance state.

One is security by the people, for the people. The other is securing the people, but in the shackles of a controlling government.

I would rather have freedom with a little uncertainty than certainty without freedom.

I’m with you Michael Gaston. Don’t need or want TV;haven’t for years. Only trouble is, now with budgets getting crunched everywhere, public libraries are getting closed, too. So far the radio is still an available safe source of news and enertainment (except for the loss of Dave Niehaus).

A Suicide bomber makes any and all cameras and scanners null and void. Oh wait, at least they’ll know what he looked like after wards? Epic Fail. The entire underwear bomber is nothing short of a joke. A guy gets on a plane without a passport, in another country, and all of a sudden it’s treated as a break down in our country? Does any one stop and THINK for just one moment all the ways in which someone can kill MASS amounts of people? How about just making a remote control plane and flying it into a sports stadium? For the sake of length, I’ll stop there. Point made.

I hope people are not this naive regarding the war on terror. If you actually think that terrorism is a full fledged war on the United States, you better wake up and do your homework. Most all of it is CIA sponsored. Rather than believe me or refute me, look it up. Look up Al-Qeada CIA Tim Osman.

Don’t be a freaking loser who just schleps through life believing what you want to believe because it makes your happy little world go around. Turn of the TV and detoxify.

The Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, these societies were also security states. The only reason a country needs such security is when the country is oppressing people, either domestically or as a colonial power. If the U.S. was not running roughshod on the world, there would be no need for this. Bring our troops home, close the bases overseas, stop the wars, and *** let the corporations pay for their own cost of doing business. *** Once that is done the U.S. will become, once again, as safe as Switzerland, or New Zealand, or any of the other non-military, non-colonial, non-interventionists wealthy countries. Heck, we would probably even be able to go back to society that doesn’t worry about locking its doors and windows all the time. Corruption starts at the top, but it trickles down fast. When a country’s presidents seeks the power to murder indiscriminately, it only sets a precedent for every thug on the street that murder is acceptable.
