At least 94 journalists died in violence this year, the International Federation of Journalists said Friday, adding that Pakistan was the most dangerous place in 2010 for media workers.

“Journalists and media personnel remain prime targets for political extremists, gangsters and terrorists,” the Brussels-based organisation said in a report, adding that another three died in accidents over the past 12 months.

The death toll came at the hands of “targeted killings, bomb attacks and crossfire incidents,” it said.

In 2009, the total was 139 journalists.

The IFJ said 15 media workers died in Pakistan this year, adding that the majority of the annual fatalities comprised “victims of violence connected to the insurgency war in Pakistan, the drug war in Mexico as well as the political unrest in Honduras.”

The list was issued two days after Danish and Swedish intelligence agencies said they foiled an attack plot against the daily that published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

“Nearly 100 journalists killed is a heavy loss which ought to stir the world governments into action to offer better protection to journalists,” said Jim Boumelha, IFJ president.

The full list is available on the IFJ site.

It is cause for alarm when Freedom of Press is under attack at such high levels.

God bless the Bringers of Light. I was taught in a journalism class about how reporters used to protect one another by exposing the secrets of any government that harassed them. These days… we take such killings almost in stride. Sad,,, I hope their families are proud of their sacrifice. This has been a hard year for journalism, as the MSM and governmental control are trying to shut down the freedom of the web. We fight over net neutrality in the states, while in other parts of the world writing half of what we do would get us thrown in jail. I believe we have a moral obligation to use what freedom of the press we have, and one way to do so is to protect journalists in other countries. I correspond and write about Zedan Huessein, in Egypt, a respected opposition journalist who has been tortured and jailed for very civil activities. I am not sure what little light I can shine will make a difference, though I am told it has.. certainly helps him feel less alone.

I would like to see articles about all of these journalists. Such a book coming out yearly would be a powerful lesson for any would be journalists, and a reminder of what a great gift freedom of expression really is. Most of the artists I know in Chicago would be jailed for their views in a lot of countries who are allies with our politicians.

—I agree about the idea of a book coming out with this information every year being helpful in revealing the importance of our freedom of the press. It is too bad that nothing is sacred when it comes to war, whether it is a matter of women and children, religions and society pratices, the use of confinement and torture, or the threat to the innocent journalists who are only there to keep the world honest,…may God save us all!!!!!!

—I wanted to be one of these journalists many years ago,…I guess it wouldn’t have been a good career choice in today’s world?! My prayers, admiration and sympathy go out to them and their families,…the living who are still struggling to bring us the truth and those who have been lost to us in the course of these struggles. May God give them strength and protection and forgive us all for losing our sense of humanity! Remember the word, PEACE????
