Real-life ‘superhero’ squad fights crime in Seattle

A Seattle man who calls himself “Phoenix Jones” appears to have taken 2010′s comic book film “Kick-Ass” to heart.

Like the main character in the independently produced hero fantasy, Jones has taken it upon himself to dress in a colorful outfit and roam the streets looking for crime.

And on Sunday night, while trolling the streets of the Seattle suburb Lynnwood, he found one.

A man, who asked local reporters to identify him only as Dan, said his car was almost broken into by an unknown criminal when out of nowhere a masked man in a “skin-tight rubber, black and gold suit” rushed in and chased the crook away.

His heroics caught the attention of KIRO Eyewitness News, which went up-close with Jones, the self-named “Guardian of Seattle.”

He carries mace and tear gas, and a stun prod for fighting off criminals. Jones’s outfit was also equipped with stab plates and bullet-proof material, he said.

Jones is just one of a team that calls itself the “Rain City Superhero Movement,” which calls to arms regular citizens who are sick of waiting for others to take direct action against criminals. They base their principles on the “Real Life Superhero Movement,” a website formed after comic book icon Stan Lee’s television show “Who Wants to be a Superhero?” caught on in 2006.

“Officially, a Real Life Superhero is whoever chooses to embody the values presented in superheroic comic books, not only by donning a mask/costume, but also performing good deeds for the communitarian place whom he inhabits,” the “movement” declared on its website. “You don’t necessarily need to engage in a violent fight to be a crime fighter – you might patrol and report whatever crime you see. So basically, terms like ‘good deed’ or ‘crime fighting’ are open to various interpretations.”

Adherents are encouraged to take action in their communities by posting flyers about missing persons, handing out food and clothing to homeless people, raising awareness of unsolved crimes and even donating blood.

The “Rain City” group first made waves in November, when Seattle police were notified that costumed vigilantes were paroling the streets under names like “Buster Doe,” “The Green Reaper,” “Thorn,” “No Name, “Gemini,” “Catastrophe,” “Penelope” and “Thunder 88.”

Back then, “Phoenix Jones” was sporting a different outfit, with a mask, fedora, black cape and tights: more like something seen in “The Shadow” than “X-Men.”

When Jones was interviewed by the local police, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer noted, he was not in costume and claimed that it was being repaired after he was stabbed while fighting a drug dealer. Police said they weren’t sure if he was really injured or not, and warned him that future crime fighting endeavors could cost him his life.

“I don’t condone people walking around on the street with masks,” Jones was quoted as saying. “Everyone on my team either has a military background or a mixed martial arts background, and we’re well aware of what its costs to do what we do.”

Local police have encouraged Seattle residents to avoid getting involved with actively fighting crime, urging them to report suspicious activity by dialing 911 instead.

This video is from KIRO Eyewitness News in Seattle, broadcast Jan. 5, 2010.

This is hilarious but discouraging, considering that these misguided nerds have chosen to valorize policing instead of rebellion. The fantasy that informs the kind of superhero comics reflected in Jones and others may appeal to the disenfranchised, but at its core there lies a pining for the mythical strictures of some benevolent and just Law. In my mind, this kind of fantasy can only end in the self-defeat of ideological masturbation.

Wasn’t this already tried once by a group who dressed in red coats and wrapped themselves in the same sort of crime fighting and self described guardian angels over thirty years ago whose leader was eventually charged with assault and battery? I can’t wait until these guys attack someone who has locked their keys in their car and is simply trying to retrieve them using a coat hanger.

Their identities will be revealed when they appear in court to face a lawsuit!

I reside in the Phoenix,Az area whom just canceled their camera based traffic control devices
I cant understand with all the gangs, illegals, drugs, and more serious crimes going on here.
The police is back on the streets to focus on traffic issues. if you have ever driven in the phoenix area the speeding is the most problem here and the camera control system took care of that.
it just doesn’t make sense to use the highly trained police to focus on minor traffic issues.

It’s great for citizens to fight crime, even more effective without the costume.

Imagine if, a large percentage of the time, criminals in the act were seriously hurt or killed?

Cops aren’t in favor because they hate competition, and lower crime makes them less necessary.

    Kickass!

I find it sad when “superheros” have to come out to fight crime because the citizenry has ousted police and other protectors due to their reticence to pay enough taxes to support public protection. WA state, like many others, rejected taxes on just about everything and put limits on them – even though it takes MORE money to supply protection now than every before.

When citizens finally get their heads on straight and vow to pay for the services they need instead of refusing, then the budget will balance and things will right themselves. Now we have a deficit in critical thinking and the “me, me, me” syndrome that needs to stop. Pay for what you use!

but, but, but, traffic cameras infringe on our ‘FREEDOMS”!!!!!!

So much for the freedom NOT to get hit by a speeding car…..or walk on the streets without injury…….and those pesky police can ignore our immigration issues when they are overwhelmed with important traffic monitoring…….

I have three questions for you to answer… if any of them are no then your argument is invalid. Is Washington State a right to carry state? What is the number of violent crimes in the state compared to the number of police? Do people have the right to defend themselves or others if they see a crime and know they can stop it?

See helping your fellow man is not a crime. Ever hear the story about the girl that was killed and no one called for help even as she screamed because they thought someone else did it and they didn’t want to get involved?

Shut up dude. If you think you are that cool, why don’t you design a suit or a mask for yourself and do what he does best, keeping crime rates on the low? Plainly, you just talk your mouth off without realizing his contributions to the society. The cops ain’t that efficient most of the time, so vigilantes like him are definitely needed to keep the neighborhood safe. Sometimes I wonder if a person as fat as you can even fit inside the hot rod in your picture. Hahaha. Take that for criticizing him! You are such a dumbass for talking without thinking.

Scroll down a little bit and read my additional comments. I kinda atoned for my sins. Your point of people wanting something to believe in, let it be you. You don’t need a costume. If you have corrupt police in Lynnwood you need a video camera. Get some like minded people like yourself, get a plan and let the Lynnwood mayor, chief of police and any local news station know that your fed up with the bullshit and tell them what your going to do about it. It starts with you. I do get it because I’ve done it. Day’s after 9-11-01 some morons I worked with were planning to bomb a local factory and kill replacement workers. Not only replacement workers but if some locked out workers were killed in the process it would be considered by them “collateral damage”. Their plan expanded to killing people they were mad at where we worked. They were going to blame it on Muslim’s. Fortunately one of these morons was talked out of it and came to me for help. I worked 8 months undercover. One moron get’s off because he supplied information and the other moron went to federal prison. I lost my job, got sued, and was stabbed in the back by the very people my actions saved. You might ask: would I do it again? I would. You might ask: Where was the government when I was getting screwed? Watching. They didn’t need me anymore to lay in a cornfield with a guy with automatic weapons and bombs, so goodbye. Didn’t wear a costume but I did play a role. Now back to you: If your on this blog reading these stories and comments your not a sheep. Believing in something or someone starts with you, you don’t need a costume. No one is going to take you seriously. People who become sycophants to guys in costumes or politicians or preachers or rock stars or actors or fascist with AM radio shows also become the sheep that follow the guys who drive the Roll Royce and that’s what got us here. Some people go through life without ever having an original idea or independent thought. That’s not you, your here reading these stories. Google, Fred Frigo. Tony Walker, Mansfield, Ohio

I must say that I respect what you have done. The problem with what you suggest is that the mayor, police chief and the circuit judge are all the same… Corrupt as all get out. This is something that I cannot fight alone. I need the entire city to be involved in this and getting that to happen is like pulling teeth if you get my meaning, or will take an act of congress and we all know how that will fare… Anyways brother, keep up the good fight, we can and will prevail if we all stand together…

I agree completely. However, in my view, that a flawed idea or structure contains within it some positive aspects does not redeem the idea as a whole. I believe that if people want to be heroes, then they will commit to activism and promoting an active, democratic life among the citizenry that is opposed to state power and not caught up in what I view as a misguided pursuit of the Law that is complicit with, rather than subversive of, the status quo.

  • http://www.websemiotics.com/ Comrade Seidl

Thanks Brother for your comments and understanding. Get yourself a video recorder and a digital audio recorder, read your state laws to see what if any limitations or restrictions your state has. In Ohio you don’t have to tell someone your taping them. Document everything. If you find find and document evidence of public corruption contact the FBI. (I never had issues with agent’s, good guys doing their job) If you have any problems with “moving it forward” let me know. Contact me via FaceBook. Same name and you’ll recognize the pic. I’ll leave you with this: “I am but wounded, not slain. I shall lie me down and rest awhile then rise to fight again”. Plutarch 46-120 C.E.

Wa state is a right to carry state.
Can’t answer yes nor no to question # 2 –
Yes, we have the right to self defense.

When you have a robbery and call the police, we now get told that we have to file a report online and that they do not have the personnel to pursue the case at all. No one comes to the crime scene. Anything less than a violent crime is now virtually ignored. These have nothing to do with guns nor violent crime.

Guns are abhorent to me and guns in the hands of citizens “trying to protect” when they don’t have the training nor the decision making process to determine who needs to be helped or shot is patently ridiculous. Getting involved is NOT the question, it is the process of that involment that is potentially much more dangerous.

For jaywalking? More like punched in the face. What I’m trying to get at is that “crime” is whatever the state decides it is & they should be fighting the OTHER “crime fighters”, the piglice osiffers who are doing such a terror-able job that those they supposed to be protecting feel the need to do the job for them.

  • Anonymous

Personally, I think this guy and his colleagues are to be commended. “Don’t get involved” is the scumbags dinner bell. The cops are, on a GOOD DAY a deterrent and enforcement force. At best. But they can’t be everywhere all the time and I don’t think most of us would want them to be. Phoenix Jones and his crew are getting out there and making a difference in the community.

As for the people calling them idiots or saying that they should be inciting rebellion rather than enforcing laws there’s two things to consider. First off; it’s always easier to talk trash than to get off your @$$ and actually DO SOMETHING. It’s also more pathetic and sad.

Second, well more like 2 and 2A: Inciting rebellion against the current legal system does more harm than good. Ask the nice people in Somalia and other failed states how much they enjoy living without rule of law. What we’ve got may not be perfect but it’s significantly enough better than the alternative that people risk their lives every day to live under it. Something to think about

2A Is Comrade Seidl HONESTLY suggesting that holding up signs and chanting at a mass protest does more good than handing out food and blankets to hungry homeless people or stopping an assault or robbery in progress?

Ignore the haters Phoenix and Co. Keep up the good work!

Exactly you have to keep moving it up the chain. It would take some major doing to actually know how corrupt as far up as it goes, but not impossible. Here where I live, the old police chief got ousted because a active murder investigation that had people giving first hand information went unsolved when the murderer was known by a lot of people and swept under the rug. A new chief was brought in when we got the other guy out and we now have the original primary suspect under arrest and being prosecuted for murder. So yeah, get out there find that evidence and go to the fbi.
