JPMorgan Chase & Co. executive and former commerce secretary William Daley was chosen Thursday to be President Obama’s new White House chief of staff, according to published reports.

Sixty-two year old Daley is brother of outgoing Chicago major Richard Daley and has close ties to former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and outgoing White House senior adviser David Axelrod. He will be replacing interim chief of staff Peter Rouse.

Rouse stepped in when Obama’s first chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, decided to run for mayor of Chicago.

“Bill Daley is a man of stature and extraordinary experience in government, business, trade negotiations, and global affairs,” Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue said. “He’s an accomplished manager and strong leader. We look forward to working with him to accelerate our recovery, grow the economy, create jobs, and tackle America’s global challenges.”

Daley serves on JPMorgan’s Executive Committee in charge of Corporate Responsibility and is a board member of the pharmaceutical company Merck.

He was also US Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton administration, where he helped shape the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and worked on trade relations with China. He’s currently a board member at the centrist Democratic think tank “Third Way.”

Daley joined JPMorgan in 2004 as Midwest Chairman, and in 2007 began to lead the firm’s efforts in corporate social responsibility.

Tapping a corporate executive for the key position at a time when the nation is focused on the economy would cast the president as a business-friendly centrist, serving as an olive branch to conservative critics while inevitably irritating his progressive base.

Some liberal Democrats complain that the White House is too cozy with business, arguing that corporate special interests have held undue influence over the outcomes of key initiatives such as health care and financial reform.

“This was a real mistake by the White House,” Adam Green, the co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said. “Bill Daley consistently urges the Democratic Party to pursue a corporate agenda that alienates both Independent and Democratic voters. If President Obama listens to that kind of political advice from Bill Daley, Democrats will suffer a disastrous 2012.”

The Obama administration has been in the midst of a staff shake-up in recent weeks.

President Obama’s new senior adviser David Plouffe starts work Monday, replacing David Axelrod. Press secretary Robert Gibbs also announced Wednesday that he would be leaving his position in early February.

Despite leaving the White House, Axelrod and Gibbs said they both plan to help with Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012.

Obama will hold a press conference at 2:30 pm EST to announce his decision. Raw Story will have the video embedded in this story shortly thereafter.

This video is from Fox News’ America Live, broadcast Jan. 6, 2010.

It was obvious he would be the pick as soon as he made the short list. Sadly predictable.

Is it possible there is such thing as a ‘decent Daley’? Like saying an ‘ honest republican’…I know there is such a thing, but it seems like a misnomer.

JP Morgan Chase has just announced the purchase of the White House, including the physical assets, intellectual properties and all Executive Branch authorities. JP executive William Daley has been tapped to oversee daily operations. No decision has been made on whether to retain Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but is expected to surpass recent agreements between Goldman Sachs and FaceBook.

    Hope a Dope.

If you still have hope you’re a dope.

We are a conquered people. Arguing whether it is a democrat or republican is as relevant as whether it was a foreign or domestic car that ran you over. It’s a distinction that makes little difference to a dead man.

COS Daley’s bonus for 2011 is expected to exceed $500 Million, regardless of what happens to the DEM party as progressives search for a home.

There’s an old joke about the Daleys, specifically the mayor.

Seems China wanted to upgrade their voting system and found a good deal on old voting machines that Chicago wanted to get rid of. When the election was held, the Chinese were surprised to find out that Richard Daley won.

Obama probably used the same voting system for this jerk. Hang on to your wallets as Wall Street is coming to steal more from every working American. Obama is worthless as a leader and acts more like the slaves from the old South. When his ‘masser’ calls, Obama is yelling “Yes Sir, right away Sir.”

    And the theft continues…

The main problem in our nation is corporate control of government and neither Obama nor the republicans oppose that. We desperately need a viable third-party candidate for 2012 (and 2014, 2016, 2020, 2024, etc).

    Great………..(not)

Thought I would share some news about foreclosures in Mass.

    http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=176615

    [snip]

Massachusetts’s highest court is poised to rule on whether foreclosures in the state should be undone because securitization-industry practices violate real- estate law governing how mortgages may be transferred.

The fight between homeowners and banks before the Supreme Judicial Court in Boston turns on whether a mortgage can be transferred without naming the recipient, a common securitization practice. Also at issue is whether the right to a mortgage follows the promissory note it secures when the note is sold, as the industry argues.

    [Snip]

The wheels of justice turn slowly, but they do turn. We shall see how the Massachusetts Supreme Court rules on this one. Incidentally, The State Attorney General backs the borrowers.

Obama, the first black republican president. I’m just tickled pink that the Chamber of commerce ceo Donahue is happy. Because gosh darn it, I wouldn’t want the rich unhappy now! I wish the republicans would hurry up and impeach obama! I’m tired of the peons having to sacrifice so the wealthy can have more, especially to the detriment of our Country! I hope the Dem’s will offer some challenge to Obama for 2012. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume obama will be re-elected or is the fix already in? Obama is another gwb. He may be able to speak the english language better, but he is not doing what is in America’s best interest and is most likely just another figure head for who ever is in the back ground pulling the strings.

The Morgan-British Fascist Coup Against FDR

Simultaneous with the Hitler coup in Germany, London-directed Morgan and Mellon interests were involved in organizing an attempted fascist coup in the United States against President Franklin Roosevelt.

Smedley Butler blew the whistle on the gangster capitalists in 1933. Their coup attempt in 2011 meets with better success.

    From the link below:

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Monday night in an interview with a radio host back home, came to a stark conclusion: the banks own the Senate.

“And the banks — hard to believe in a time when we’re facing a banking crisis that many of the banks created — are still the most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. And they frankly own the place,”

So who gives a flying f%@k? The party does nothing but play tag team with the Rethugs to sell out the people. Democrat/Republican is a phony division used to placate the proles. The real two parties are the Have-Mores, representing the top 2%, and everyone else. The 98% need to wake up and realize how we’re being gamed by the oligarchs.

Over a million people went bankrupt last year.

Ever since Reagan poverty in America has increased, the middle class shrunk and the rich got richer, the poor got poorer.

The so called Democrats since Reagan are actually right wing Democrats. Bill Clinton knew how to say the right words, but words means nothing, what counts is what is actually done and what was done was this: The Republicans wanted to get rid of the safeguards put in place by FDR’s watch. These safeguards were put there to prevent another crash like the one experienced in 1929. Clinton said okay we will get rid of the safeguard. This paved the way for the current crash we are experiencing.

Bush Jr I need not say more. We all know the damage he has done. America under Bush Jr’s watch is became a Herbert Hoover repeat, America crashed.

Obama is without doubt a repeat of the right wing Democrat. The rich is still getting what they want.

Republicans gained power because they distorted the issues. They regained power via fraud.

We are now in the beginning stages as to what Hitler’s and Mussolini’s fascist state looked like at the start of their regime.

The new governor of California is going to subject that state to austerity programs aka rob the poor to pay the rich. This movement will spread nation wide.

The left is taking a beating because it cannot compete with the machine of disinformation that the right owns. At this point I can only say, “The people will take a lot of abuses before they ever get off their ass and revolt.

    Conservatism Kills.

Likewise Obama should hire the CEO of the largest health insurance company to oversee insurance reform. Also Obama should hire the author of the torture memos to write new laws to make it easier for TSA to do it’s job, and have TSA expanded to staff all gas stations and drug stores since terrorists might buy gas and chemicals to make bombs. And instead of the public electing congressmen, Obama should just have corporations appoint lobbyists to fill those seats. And taxpayers should be taxed on their food and rent to pay for the congressional lobbyists’ multimillion dollar salaries because corporations shouldn’t have to pay them because that would be a conflict of interest.

I think you would really enjoy A Renegade History by Thaddeus Russell. It has enlightened me to the fact that we are so programmed to be Good Citizens that we don’t really know how to act up. Each culture that came here has been assimilated, much like the Borg on Star Trek assimilited people, so they would not act in their own self-interest. We no longer know even what our self interest is…and we work hard each day to bring home a check that will pay our rent and feed us….so consumed are we by just surviving, not raising any dust (as that next unemployed person might be me), not acting out – that sadly we conform and say “ah it is just a wee bit more inconvenient – they will stop soon”. They are not going to stop…let us act up and see if it works.

In some cases he should. It’s about what the individual can bring to the table to accomplish mission objectives. If it’s the military should you not bring the best sharpshooter in the world in to take out a terrorist because that sharpshooter is a former mercenary or former this or that?

The best man for the mission is still the best man for the mission. Would you rather Obama have selected Richard Daley? If you expect Obama to get anything done he needs people with expertise at business. I’m not saying either Daley is not corrupt, I’m saying everyone in Washington is corrupt and it’s just a matter of being corrupt and competent vs corrupt and incompetent.

Karl Rove was corrupt and competent, he got his agenda pushed through congress. Daley may be just as corrupt but if he is competent then more good will be achieved than if he is incompetent. I think the only thing that matters in politics is whether or not you accomplish your objectives.

Are you one of the people who were against the tax cuts for the rich? Those tax cuts bought DADT repeal and a bunch of other bills.

I only care about what you accomplish. “progressives” like you don’t care if nothing gets done, because you are too concerned with feeling good about what you are doing.

I’m saying feel like shit but get the job done. Daley might make you feel like shit, but you know he will get bills through Senate and signed into law. Democrats still control the Senate. If you get what you want why care if the person who gives it to you is corrupt? I don’t care who or how, as long as in the end the objectives are met or surpassed.

Wow!!! Did he also announce that he will not be running for re-election??? There is nonwY he will get enough voters to turn out for him as long as he keeps making moves like this…

I have never been more disappointed in a person in my life… It may be my own fault because I blindly thought Hilary was the corporatist and Obama was moderate populist… Yes he passed wallstreet reform but only 10% of what needed to be done – same thing with healthcare… A true leader would have promised criminal investigations of bankers, trader, hedge funds, and government for their role in the economic collapse. He also would have had criminal investigations into the Bush administration, the military and military contractors/suppliers. Those two investigations would have turned up enough corruption, theft over charging to cut the deficit in half!!!!

  • http://www.socialistcafe.com SocialistCafeDOTcom

    Thanks for asking!

Socialist is a broad term (as are liberal and conservative). I know of some today who are also afraid of the common people. Not many, but some. And yes, many are, by today’s standards, puritanical (I try not to hang out with them too much. They always seem sad).

Franklin has to be judged by his time. There wasn’t any such thing as capitalism, or a modern working class, Karl Marx wasn’t even born until 30 years or so after Franklin died. But for the 1700’s he was left wing – a believer in the common good, a person who felt that government could accomplish great things. The point might be that our history is being re-written. According to current right-wing dogma the founding daddies were all greedy, corporate libertarians.

So if Franklin were alive today would he be a socialist? Maybe yes, maybe no. Now, Thomas Jefferson…

Business as usual for Wall Street and the Banks. Only in America will the people allow themselves to be robbed and stripped of their liberties like quiet little sheep. The kids have been dumbed down and don’t know the history anymore.

If can’t be texted, isn’t fun or fast food, they have no interest except when told to be afraid. This sure don’t look like the America I grew up in and served for.

The Nuclear Family has exploded and been replaced with serfdom and perpetual debt. The American Dream is DEAD.

Well, while you’re going down that road, I suppose Obama (were he not the corporatist Manchurian candidate he has turned out to be) could simply have declared martial law and sent all the Republicans to concentration camps, and then ruled by decree.

That would get things done much more effectively, but it wouldn’t look decent, that’s for sure.

These people (elitist politicians and corporate piggies) are playing this game only for themselves.

There are too many problems at home to mention i.e. homelessness, joblessness, U.S. waging war around the globe, failing education, crumbling infrastructure, poisoned environment, inadequate healthcare etc.

Yet the political corporatocracy seems to be only concerned with creating more favorable operating conditions to expand their operations.

These piggies are making *record profits* (largely due to privatizing their profits and socializing their losses) while the majority of us are seeing our savings, pensions and assets disappear. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that our disappearing wealth is contributing to those record profits.

I get that Wall Street is the priority but what about Main Street?!? Where are the jobs? Can we use some of the trillion$ being wasted on unnecessary wars to help us out here at home?

    Where is the outrage?

I’m a hopeful person but I’m digging deep to find it.

Paraphrasing KRS-ONE 2 years ago: “America was on the verge of revolution, then they put up this black man and we all like….(reclines in relaxed pose)

There were people talking about this years ago. And none of them practically on the “left” or “right”….it is the “kooks” you guys laugh at…that speak of the Open Conspiracy, the Bankster/Elite’s New World Order…..that were right all along.

The truth is not on TV, unless you first study public relations and propaganda and how it is used, constantly.

You will never save this country from the corporate world socialism scheme we are going down with ANYONE that is endorsed by the mainstream media or funded by corporate America.

Want to tear down the Empire? Default on the debt like the “radicals” are talking about. The empire would be liquidated overnight. (Along with your 401k) Ron Paul 2012. Destroy the Fed, Destroy the Elite’s Stranglehold, not strengthen it, as the left’s agenda always does.

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!”

Howard Dean, whose progressive credentials are unmatched, is DELIGHTED with the Daley appointment. You all should ask yourselves why.

Daley’s Wall Street gig was actually heading up a charitable portion of it devoted to educating women in Africa.

But mainly this is smart as an appointment because it gives Obama someone whom Howard Dean says is deeply progressive yet who knows the mentality of the business world and its stooges in the House and Senate.

He was cool and totally believed in social programs, taking care of the ill and poor and setting up libraries, fire leagues and the like. I just was surprised that he felt there were rable that needed to work much harder and he was fairly rigid in that regard. Actually – most of the founder fathers believed (as the Constitution states) that the US could raise funds for such things as care of the poor and public services….guess the repugs just don’t read that part.

What a difference a year makes!

Remember when Obama used to say things like this: “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president,” Obama told ABC’s “World News” anchor Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview in January of 2010.

Evidently he changed his mind and is now going for the mediocre two-term deal!

But the Chamber of Commerce is raving about the choice! They love it!

And if the Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic about the chief of staff pick I bet they really like this selection to replace Lawrence Summers:

“Gene Sperling Expected to be Tapped for Top Economic Post

President Obama is reportedly preparing to name Gene Sperling the new director of the National Economic Council, replacing Lawrence Summers. Sperling served in the same post under President Bill Clinton. He is currently a special adviser to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner. During his time in the Clinton administration, Sperling is credited with helping to create the Earned Income Tax Credit, which has become a key part of the federal government’s anti-poverty policy. Sperling has been criticized by some for his ties to Wall Street. In 2008, he earned nearly $900,000 at Goldman Sachs, where he was hired to help run a charitable project at the bank. He earned an additional $158,000 in speaking fees that year. The economist Dean Baker has criticized Sperling for supporting financial deregulation during the Clinton years and for not recognizing the danger of the growth of the housing bubble.”

    Thanks again to Democracynow.org

Looks like a two-fer for the Chamber of Commerce and their business buddies and nada for the average American!

The revolving door continues with the chief of staff: Wall Street – Federal Reserve – White House, interchangeable.

It’s crystal clear now why no one from Wall Street, at least to my knowledge, has gone to jail for the fraud they perpetrated on the American public.

    In other words, WE’RE FUCKED!

A man from a company, that engineered the Federal Reserve Act, in secret, on an island off the east coast.

A man from the Clinton administration, that ended up getting Clinton, the moniker, “the best republican president we could have elected”

The economic flogging, of the wage slaves, will continue, and accelerate.

Or we could choose not to require incentives like pets. We could instead do what needs to be done, hold our own selves to better standards and accept the necessary sacrifices and adjustments, in accordance with the character of the responsible 21st century citizens we aspire to be. We certainly don’t need political parties to dangle carrots in order to entice us to care.

Wrong-as usual TBM. Ohio just got itself a new governor-a very corrupt and mean spirited jerk intent on destroying what’s left of the middle class, currently on a union busting binge and licking his chops to exploit our natural resources. The man he replaced was decent. But he lost because our voting machines are rigged (proven) and without a landslide he stood no chance of winning as too many dems and independents sat home on their asses when they should have been voting for the only chance Ohio had. The new sign should say “Welcome to Mississippi”…

I think the key is your phrase “mission objectives.” Whose mission objectives will be accomplished? The government just made the biggest bank bailout in history, and now the Big Banks are a lot closer to running government. Imagine if the CEO of British Petroleum was appointed to head the EPA. Whose mission objectives will take priority?

Another one from the old schoolboyz network. When will it stop? I suggest to neither vote republikan nor democratic, but Mike Montagne for President instead, founder of people for mathematically perfected currency/economy. After all America is a Republic and the people can vote for President who they want. No more bs.

    Yay…Another Bankster WHORE!

Besides his role in NAFTA, Daley as Chairmen of the Chamber of Commerce fought for deregulation of the derivatives market (right before it caused the global economic meltdown.

Smack in the face of main street. Brutal!!

This time Obama hit a home run. He got himself another banker boy and a lad from Chicago…he must miss Rahm who knew all the good things to do and all the good words with which to smack down that pesky progressive base.
