Pentagon official: Martin Luther King would support Iraq, Afghan wars

An Obama administration official said that nonviolent icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would “understand” and “recognize” the need for the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan if he were alive today.

In a speech commemorating the late hero days before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, the Department of Defense’s general counsel Jeh C. Johnson imputed highly questionable views to the civil rights leader.

“I believe that if Dr. King were alive today, he would recognize that we live in a complicated world, and that our nation’s military should not and cannot lay down its arms and leave the American people vulnerable to terrorist attack,” Johnson said.

Johnson claimed US service members are helping the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, noting that Dr. King spoke out in favor of acts of kindness.

“I draw the parallel to our own servicemen and women deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, away from the comfort of conventional jobs, their families and their homes,” Johnson said, adding that the “dangerous unselfishness” of the troops would make Dr. King proud.

The claim sparked controversy as critics were quick to note that Dr. King was an ardent anti-war activist who spoke out against military interventions.

Investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill called it “[o]ne of the most despicable attempts at revisionist use of Martin Luther King Jr. I’ve ever seen.”

Salon’s Justin Elliott remarked that Dr. King’s “political philosophy, as outlined in his landmark 1967 speech against the Vietnam war, strongly suggests that he would be an opponent of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, for that matter, the secret wars in Yemen and Pakistan.”

In the speech, Dr. King lamented “the most powerful nation of the world speaking of aggression as it drops thousands of bombs on a poor, weak nation more than 8000 miles from its shores.”

He called the United States “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today” and said: “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

The Pentagon release goes on to note that Johnson, an African-American, is a graduate of Morehouse College, Dr. King’s alma mater, where he attended school with Dr. King’s son.

… no one seriously suggest that we ” lay down our arms ” and open ourselves to attack , the Pentagon lives in their own paranoid , super secret , ( and the taxpayer pays ) reality , and the more we as a people are sucked into it the worse off we are . These multi-decade wars are not defensive , they are offensive , in every way . These wars are bleeding US dry , and segments of the Pentagon can’t see the forest for the trees . …. Dr. King was anti-war , no matter how some general wants to twist it .

Dr King would NOT be for ANY war, it’s pretty goddamned pathetic that this military scum would even CONSIDER saying such OBVIOUS BULLSHIT. Dr King would have seen this fucked up “war” for what it is: An excuse for those in positions of WAR PROFITEER to screw the rest of the world for PROFIT. And excuse for the powerful to ruin the lives of YET ANOTHER GENERATION. He would have seen how it’s those in power who have and ARE fucking EVERYTHING UP for the good of the very few who are PROFITEERING off of EVERY part of society. War is just another part of that theft.

Shame on this military loving dirt bag. LYING does NOT make things true, regardless of just HOW much the bastards keep playing their games. Sorry, fucker, some of US are FAR smarter than YOU are, and YOU have just proved that to EVERYONE. For you to try to justify TWO illegal OCCUPATIONS with the life and words of a great man is PATHETIC and SICKENING. Goddamned LIAR!!!!

This POS,[An Obama administration official - not a Bushy] Jeh C. Johnson, is perpetuating the myth that American people would be vulnerable to terrorist attack if we left Iraq and Afghanistan. The administration is getting so panic stricken with loss of public support it has to resort to invoking speculation about what MLK would have done.

To me that means we are leaving sooner than later and it is about money not security. But I am disgusted that Obama would use the same BS about “vulnerable to terrorist attack.”

I watch the lehrer hour on TV down under when I can. I see the ages of the men who have died over there. 80 -90% are under the age of 23. A young fellow isn’t even good in bed until he is 23 (except you and me of course) and these young boys certainly haven’t had enough sex to say, ‘OK, I can die now.’ What a waste. Life has so little value in America.

Interesting, they got a black man to say these lies about Dr King.
I am sure a white man would not be allowed to get away with it.
    Way to sell out, dude!

Jeh Johnson is either a psychopathic liar, a fool, or both. I am SO sure MLK would support a war in Iraq is which the white folks have killed about 1,000,000 brown folks based on lies promulgated by a draft-dodging drunk-driving Texan and a draft-dodging drunk driving Wyomingan.

    As if.

Wow! MLK must be turning in his grave right now!

His family should sue the Pentagon for libel. If ever there was a guy that wouldn’t endorse warmongering and who was against injustice and oppression that would be MLK. How much lower can the corporate government of the US get?

I figured with this guy being so ‘connected’ to King he might have quoted him saying he supports things like destroying a block of houses because you see a suspicious person run into one of them. I am shocked there are people going to actually believe this hogwash, but thats how propaganda works

It’s easy to assume that some one who is no longer with us would think. I highly doubt that he would have supported a war that attacked a nation, killing and maiming hundreds of thousands of people and that was based on lies. Both wars have treated human beings like a throw away commodity. Johnson proves he has no clue who Mlk is and what he stood for. I agree with Scahill and anyone with an ounce of brains knows who is speaking the truth. I believe MLK would have been demonstrating long ago against these wars and the atrocities committed. This is just more rewriting history and trying to justify the criminal acts of the bush adm. and now Obama’s. MLK would have been horrified!

No, MLK was against war profiteering and using young black men as bullet-catchers for the CEO class.

As such he would be 100% against the Republican’s permanent war for profit on the brown people of the middle east.

To all you Republicans that read this: Obama and the Democratic Leadership are all Republicans in disguise, and are therefore included in the over-arching term ‘Republicans’.

1 “The past is prophetic in that it asserts loudly that wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows. One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

“We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. How much longer must we play at deadly war games before we heed the plaintive pleas of the unnumbered dead and maimed of past wars?”

    2. “If we assume that life is worth living and that man has a right to survival, then we must find an alternative to war. In a day where vehicles hurtle through outer space and guided ballistic missiles carve highways of death through the stratosphere, no nation can claim victory in war.”

Both of these statements were made by Martin Luther king, Jr. He opposed violence. He opposed wars. He opposed injustice everywhere it has a home. No “Johnny Come Lately” can rewrite King’s history or his philosophy. Johnson cannot undocument Martin Luther King, Jr.s life as its recorded.

    From the Salon article:

Johnson goes on to argue that American soldiers play the role of the Biblical Good Samaritan cited by King because they “have made the conscious decision to travel a dangerous road and personally stop and administer aid to those who want peace, freedom and a better place in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and in defense of the American people.”

Yeah, after they bomb the shit out of them? After they play random target practice on them? AFTER THEY ABU GHRAIB them?

This is fucked up on so many levels. Mr President, you must address this. And, no, not your mouthpiece, smarmy Gibbs.

Talk about shooting oneself in the foot. Horrible exploitation of a great man to justify the atrocities of war. I was young enough to see Martin Luther King’s great speech ” I have a dream.” I was forever inspired by a man who pushed the country forward in peace. He was vehemently against the Vietnam War. He believed in nonviolent resistance to tyranny. Rewriting history, a dangerous slippery slope by this Dept. of Defense turd, and the tea party’s desire to rewrite the history of our Founders. In World War II Berlin, they burned books, the hallmark of Fascism. Thank god, you can’t burn “electrons” the messengers of knowledge.

The chain reaction of evil–wars producing more wars — must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

    ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have condemned any organizer of war, regardless of his rank or nationality.

Nothing good ever comes of violence.

Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows.

The bombs in Vietnam explode at home; they destroy the hopes and possibilities for a decent America.

    ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

    ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

We must concentrate not merely on the negative expulsion of war but the postive affirmation of peace.

    ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.

    ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in the struggle…your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

This is just the latest spin from Conservative Jerks who seem to reinterpret history the way they see it rather than it’s opposite. It’s as if they can’t accept reality so they create one brick by brick and wall themselves in. MLK and many many others in the Civil Rights era put their own lives on the line to tear down the Jim Crow laws, harassment of voters, and physical violence from hate groups that at the time were considered mainstream in some parts of our Country !!!! The Military is loaded with conservatives of all stripes, and Johnson proves this extends to African Americans as well as other minorities. Johnson should be locked in a room with audio, video, and text copies of speeches from that era and then perhaps he wouldn’t be so quick to twist a pacifist into a fascist…. There is no floor/bottom where Conservatives draw the line..they just keep plowing through ……mindless.

Only a total loon would make a statement like this. As others have pointed out, Martin Luther King Jr. was against war, against imperial wars, against wars against brown people, against violence in general. It is clear throughout his speeches, his personal papers, his public commentary, his life example.

How any conceivably SANE person could possibly construe the public record of Dr. King Jr. to argue on behalf of a pointless, wasteful, disastrous, imperialistic war that is simply fueling terrorism, enriching military contractors, slaughtering innocent people, and spawning rage against Americans across the globe is beyond me, but I guess if someone is enough of a psychopath they could make such claims about anything. What’s next, Gandhi would have agreed with nuking Iran?

Pentagon fixing to get its gig in afghanistan nixed pretty soon is trying to set up the next project to justify its ridiculously exagerated budget. There is a reason why they volunteered to be the first ones to chop their budget with a mere 58 million, Please…1/3 of the federal deficit is theirs!!!!

I just watched on Hulu a narrative on My Lai, and what’s sad, ironic or funny is that the foot soldiers in the infamous Charlie Company said the same thing as this guy–i.e. that they were there to help the people of Vietnam and they were there to bring freedom and so on, but that lasted oh, about one month, and then it was everyone other than us is the enemy.

Jeh C. Johnson is out of his freaking mind. Dr. King would spit in the face of Barack Obama and then he’d denounce the Pentagon for it’s genocide.
Johnson puts a whole new ‘spin’ on crass, servile, and asshat.

Everyone one know that Dr. King ( the gastroenterolgist, black guy civil rights leader dude and fine billiards player who was assassinated in Memphis) was a MAN OF WAR!

He loved the Civil War. He’d take different sides in civil war board games, first with the South and then with the North.

Let’s face it. America is a stupid country. There is no hope for America. It’s utterly perverse, killing bakers and herdsman it Afghanistan who have no idea why, all of a sudden, bombs are raining down on them.

Osama Bin Ladern ….the mythical, imaginary enemy of the United States would be well placed as a observer of U.S. politics on Fox News.

This is Barack Hussein Obama’s vision of America. He is insane. Mr. Obama and his henchmen at the Pentagon have not one clue as to what MLK would do, but IL”m sure he would not support the genocide that this country has committed in Irag and Afghanastan. Unlike Mr. Obomber, who is nothing but a tool of the MIC and Illuminati, MLK had a brain AND humanity that has escaped Mr. Obama’s persona completely. Obama, like Bush, is a warmonger and war criminal, a murderer and a liar.

Not anymore. In the next few months when you have a discussion with someone who is pro-war, I bet they will pull out their new ace card and say, ‘But Dr King would support this war.’
That is what the statement was designed for.

Please. Shut down 98% of the Pentagon. Permanently.

This is actually worse than what Obomber said on the Peace Prize about MLK. Sick..

““He ought to ask: ‘What would Martin Luther King do? And what would Martin Luther King say?’ And if he only listened to King, he would be a very different president than he’s turning out to be so far. I think we ought to hold Obama to his promise to be different and bold and to make change. So far, he hasn’t come through on that promise.” The late Howard Zinn on Democracy Now!

As offensive as it is to be brought to parse the anti-rational assessment MLK would approve of our current wars, is the suggestion any of the Bush administration or their punditry and their news service, were an intellectual match with King.

A great many people smelled a rat in the lead up to the war.

Some fewer, though many, knew that to some certain extent, falsity was behind the campaign for war.

Are we to imagine a Martin Luther King living in isolation and unable to intelligently place the wars in a political context or a broad historical context?

Are we to imagine the nation’s preeminent campaigner for peace might have been one those who believed every word out of the administration, would have not availed himself of the wider news services and been unaware of the ugly inconsistencies, the starkly limited reasoning, evidence and rationale of the Bush administration’s push for war?

Are we to believe Martin Luther King would be for one moment, baffled by the on-running mouth of Donald Rumsfeld or the slippery mumbo-jumbo of William Kristol?

Pentagon official: Martin Luther King would support Iraq, Afghan ……

Here at World Spinner we are debating the same thing……

It’s strange how some people can evoke King name to support anything. He would have been a Beck follower (according to Beck), he would have been a conservative (according to conservatives), he would be a war mongerer according to this guy. King was famously anti-war and did not express support for any war that was occurring when he was alive

Yep, and old MLK would welcome the Police State we have found ourselves living in as of late.
He would also embrace warrant-less searches, torture, indefinite incarceration, rampant police brutality and let’s not forget preemptive strikes on sovereign nations.
This dumb ass Jeh Johnson should have suggested that MLK would have more than likely been considered an “Enemy of the State”……….Oh wait………..MLK was considered a Terrorist, and that’s why he was murdered.

Dr. King was totally opposed to the Vietnam war (100 %) and that may have been a factor in his death…..J. Edgar Hoover not only disliked him for his civil rights activities but he brought his HATRED of Dr. King to new heights when MLK spoke out so fervently against that totally senseless WAR…….And now you would say such a STUPID thing,,,It shows how totally ignorant the author was to say he would support the present wars which are even more immoral and wasteful with even more carnage than Vietnam….Quit trying to rewrite history when there are many of us who lived thru those days and know better……………….Charles Belenchia

    >An Obama administration official said that nonviolent icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would “understand” and “recognize” the need for the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan if he were alive today.

The bullshit just got too thick.

Did you know that Coretta Scott King and a U.S. jury both agree that MLK was killed by the government, specifically a U.S. Army sniper team? Please research the work of Dr. William Pepper Esq., who represented the King family in MLK’s wrongful death suit.

At the time of his death, MLK was about to lead a mass “poor people’s march” on Washington, and the government was fearful of it culminating in popular revolution.

This speaker is a lying sack of shit. The contention that MLK would stand for war is beyond the pale. He was a true follower of the teachings of Jesus the carpenter from occupied Palestine. His enemies killed him because they feared his power, yet they had all the guns. What did they fear about him? Both he and Ghandi won their battles with a greater power than guns.
The wars the speaker claims King would have supported are racist, amoral, duplicious. They are wars of terror intended to take the property of others and subjugate them. Exactly what MLK fought against.

Afghanistan maybe, but certainly not drone plane attacks in Pakistan that are killing some terrorists but are probably killing even more innocent men, women and children.

W’s Iraq? No Fing way he would have supported that. The first one yes, but not the second one.

But all this is besides the point. The really offensive part is that this military idiot actually thinks he “knows” what MLK would think about these things.

I agree most of this, but it is foolish to say that MLK’s enemies were the only ones with guns.

Look up the Watts riot, for example. A lot of people feared “black militants” and “the Black Panthers” still scares a lot of old white people and it was a very real group back then with plenty of weapons.

That’s why Fox “news” spent so much time and energy fabricating a “New Black Panther” “movement”. They knew that just the words “black panthers” would provoke a Pavlovian response within their typical viewer.

It’s skillful mis-information that is unfortunately working too much of the time.

Neither Ghandi nor Jesus won anything without weapons. Whether they had a non-weapon power greater than the weapons used during their times is a matter of opinion.

In fact, shortly after Jesus died, came two bloody uprising of Jews against Romans. And when MLK was assassinated, there were wide-spread armed riots in black neighborhoods. Even before Ghandi died, India and what became Pakistan were fighting each other with weapons.

Sure they both preached non-violence, but it didn’t happen.

This is a DOD spokesman, the DOD is a militant organization that wants endless wars, which they now have & are not going to give up easily.

And although this is under the Obama administration, he pledged to let the generals run the wars, aka let the DOD have their wars.

This just more disinfo & revisionist history from the right-wing.

Johnson probably believes every word he says. After all, Jeh C’s experience isn’t that of most American blacks. Although MLK probably never used the term, some of his more radical contemporaries might have called Jeh an ‘Uncle Tom’.

Having a black president in office is, well, refreshingly white. His agenda is no different from the ‘base’ that elected Bush. America continues to rain destruction on some parts of the world. It still maintains a threat posture to other places. Both situations MLK was fully cognizant of, and thoroughly opposed to.

I didn’t know MLK either, but sensing his belief in the other JC, I would imagine that, although the target may have changed, the warfare still would have cried out for his protest and dissent.

After the black members of Congress, so overwhelmingly voted for those wars and Mr. Powell and Ms. Rice helped carry out the policies, I thought that black people in power, since Dr. King, had lost all empathy with the downtrodden of mankind.
I had the audacity of hope that Mr.Obama would now see Afghanistan as he saw Iraq as an unnecessary war,

Now to have a black official spouting jingoistic language in honor of Dr.King is quite unbearable.

I would advise Mr. Johnson to seek a job in Vice President Cheney’s law office.
