Discussing Democratic leaders during a June broadcast for the Republican Fox News Channel, conspiracy host Glenn Beck told his followers they would have to “shoot them in the head” in order to bring an end to an alleged “communist” agenda.

“They believe in communism,” he said. “They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.”

A transcript of Beck’s show was still available on the Fox News website. (Screenshot.)

In the very next breath, he mentioned then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), claiming her “George Washington” was “Karl Marx.”

For context, more of Beck’s contentious statement is reflected below:

“Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government.

“I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don’t. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep’s clothing — change the pose. You will get the ends.

“You’ve been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.

“They are dangerous because they believe. Karl Marx is their George Washington. You will never change their mind. And if they feel you have lied to them — they’re revolutionaries. Nancy Pelosi, those are the people you should be worried about.

“Here is my advice when you’re dealing with people who believe in something that strongly — you take them seriously. You listen to their words and you believe that they will follow up with what they say.”

Beck has long proved highly controversial as a media figure popularized by the Republican Fox News Channel. He’s previously joked about poisoning Pelosi and once claimed that President Obama wants to enslave white people.

His litany of outrageous comments and often completely fabricated narratives led many advertisers to stop supporting his program and at one point last year his show found itself without even a single underwriter in Britain, where it has been kept on the air nearly 11 months with no advertisers.

A changing environment for political speech

In the wake of a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which left six dead and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, many in the media have criticized increasingly violent rhetoric from pundits and politicians.

It didn’t help that days after the shooting, Beck issued a call for peace on his website, next to an image of him holding a handgun and posing as if he were a character on a television action-drama.

Some have even accused Beck, among others, of being a direct inspiration to killers who allegedly adhered to some of his more extreme political fantasies.

One California man, Byron Williams — who was arrested after opening fire on the police officers who discovered him in the process of donning a bullet-proof vest — later claimed he wanted to “start a revolution.” His targets were two groups Beck had made out to be antagonists: the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Tides Foundation.

Williams’ targeting of the Tides Foundation was especially indicative of Beck’s inspiration: they were almost completely unknown until he began claiming the foundation was somehow behind a massive communist conspiracy to kill Americans.

The Tides Foundation is actually a non-profit group that awards grants to other non-profits committed to progressive initiatives. Financing from Tides helped form People For the American Way and the ACLU’s Campaign to Defend the Constitution, among others.

Following the incident, Tides Foundation CEO Drummond Pike urged advertisers to drop Beck or come to terms with potentially one day having “blood” on their hands.

The alleged shooter in Arizona, Jared Loughner, did not appear to have a well defined political ideology, but was known to have adopted some ideas propagated by the extreme-right Sovereign Citizens movement. Loughner’s YouTube account further insisted that all people have the right to print their own currencies, castigating the Federal Reserve as an evil.

This video is from the Republican Fox News Channel, broadcast June 10, 2010.

Beck wont’ be gong anywhere any time soon. Rupert WANTS his sorry, lying ass there. Beck hasn’t had a single sponsor in Britain for 11 MONTHS. Who do you think is paying for that time? Rupert, that’s who. And he doesn’t mind losing money at all, look at the first 5 years of Faux noise, which lost about $100 million PER YEAR for those first 5. Rupert doesn’t give a flying rat’s ass about the truth, or civility, or social justice at all, he cares about his MONEY, and nothing else. And the fact that he keeps Beck on proves that it’s making him money SOMEWHERE, or he believes that it will.

Folks, looking for decency from Murdoch is like looking for milk from a bull. It just ain’t there.

There is no evidence that someone as mentally deranged and damaged as Glenn Beck could have known what he was saying let alone understood that someone might take his words seriously.

In any event, when Glenn Beck said shoot them in the head he was speaking metaphorically and meant that his listeners should go shoot Karl Marx the titular head of the socialist regime in America.

And besides guns don’t kill people nor do words, people as unbalanced as Glenn Beck and frustrated because they still don’t have a job or their own radio and television program, in this booming economy where the current unemployment rate is, at 9.4 percent, higher than Russia’s do.

So its really no one’s fault if a few loose screws sink a bridge every once in while; we must never take away a person’s liberty to say any wacky thing that pops into their mind, even someone as despicable as Glenn Beck, he is a necessary additive to our national dialogue; where would we be without him? He and Rush, the Chinese mocker/talker, both are!

They must not be silenced, ever! It’s the first amendment!

This really comes down to Rupert Murdoch and why he should be stripped of US citizenship and deported back home to Australia. I keep saying that and funny how so many say it is nice to dream. Murdoch is quite clearly an enemy of America, it is as clear as it gets.

This is about that fucking scumbag Murdoch more than Beck, and how the FCC has become toothless. No one should be allowed to say such garbage on television in the USA. Free speech has limits and Murdoch has gone way beyond those limits.

Kudos to WJM51 for explaining the fact Murdoch wants Beck to spew this crap.

Why do you think this is about Glenn Beck? It is really about the people who pay him to say what he says. They are in control of his message and they are the ones you should be angry at. He is just a well paid buffoon, happy to take their money and play the idiot role that the rabble love so much.

A month ago I had a guy wearing a Blackwater shirt tell me he was going to murder me because I sneered at his mercenary wannabe attire.

They’re out there. Angry, violent and unhinged. Rupert Murdoch’s goal is to stir them up to create chaos and overthrow the government.

We’re ants and Fox News is his magnifying glass. Don’t look for a reason from Murdoch, the Koch brothers and the rest, they are just bored rich kids who want to break shit.

I didn’t know they were mutually exclusive categories. I thought I could be angry at Glenn Beck and Murdoch…I guess I was wrong.

Give me a story about Murdoch and I’ll tell you how much I hate what he does, but since this story appears to be explicitly about Glenn Beck and what Beck actually said, I thought it was appropriate to use my time to rant on him.

I’m sorry I was incorrect in doing so!

There is a class of people for whom “truth hurts”. These are people who have dropped out of the school of life. The ability of their brain to learn, and accept new information, has atrophied. This process starts in school, you see the ones who think “learning is hard” because that’s what’s been drilled into them. They see that their parents clearly didn’t get anything from school and so they have no expectations either. These people end up with the dull boring mundane jobs that many “intelligent” people find intolerable. Television is “bubble gum” for these people’s minds (thanks FLW) and the messages from people like Glenn Beck are appreciated because they don’t require any work from the learning processes in the brain. The message goes directly to the fear center in the back of the brain, which is always paying attention, so it’s the easiest way to stimulate someone.

Good thinking. Murdoch and his businesses are protected by the government and his allies in it, so he wants to overthrow it; chaos would make this oligarch vulnerable. But “he just wants to fuck with shit.” Yeah, that’s how he got so rich and powerful: by sabotaging himself out of boredom.

It’s costing Murdoch a hell of a lot of money to have Beck spew this crap, at least in England. Murdoch wants to be Josef Goebbels–the publicist for the international fascist/corporatist regime. But first, Murdoch needs to help the fascists/corporatists take over. That’s where Beck comes in.

I had a dream that I rounded up all the fox and AM radio right winger mouth pieces, yeah rounded them up, kidnapping is such a harsh word. So I round them up, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Coulter, Malkin, Levin, Savage, Michael Reagan and the good doctor Laura. I need Dr. Laura there because what I’m about to do will require a doctor. The doctor doesn’t have to be a medical doctor, but a doctor should be on sight. I’m not a brute. I want to afford them the same medical care they would afford us. Anyway I tie them to chairs, straddled reverse and hobbled to the chairs and then starting with Rushblow, with all the other participants watching I dig into that fat mouth on that fat face and extract his tongue with my long needle nose pliers and as he’s making all kinds of weird noise, jibber jabbering, sounding like he’s making fun of the Chinese, I snip that lying tongue off with my dull rusty Wiss metal snips. Oh! What’s that? Someone crying? Why it’s none other than Gwen Beck, ain’t so tough now are we Gwen? I got something special for you. I pop his pinkie toes off with a rusty wood chisel, I make him put on a pair of red stiletto heels, two sizes too small. ” Act out your favorite scene from Spiderman the Musical Gwen” I cry, “act damn you, act for the rest of the class”. I’ve really been trying to think good thoughts since the Gabby Gifford’s shooting, but when I see this despicable rat shooting off his moronic mouth it is a bit difficult to remain civil. This menace to society is going to end up having his own message wrought upon him; what goes around comes around so the saying goes?

There’s always a market for those willing to debase themselves as thoroughly as Beck does.

Consider Beck a media version of the traveling freakshow geek who bites the heads off live chickens, and his audience of easily-led-by-the-nose sheeple as those willing to pay handsomely for the privilege of watching Beck’s mental spasms.

I have a dream too that the O man realizes that Faux News is an enemy combatant and sends them all to GITMO, where Hannity finally gets to make good on his promise to be water boarded.

Would it be that much of a stretch to say that Limbaugh is advocating sedition? I think he would actually benefit from 2 years down in the Cuban sun. They have the “guests” on strict calorie diets and he might finally get under the Obese BMI rating.

I believe Beck and Fox News through inbreeding and selection of irrational and incoherent thinkers/speakers have proven the efficacy of dysgenics. A legal means should be found to sterilize them.

    Quote from Wikipedia:
“Dysgenic mutations have been studied in animals such as the mouse[3] and the fruit fly.[4][5] The term dysgenics was first used as an antonym of eugenics — the social philosophy of improving human hereditary qualities by social programs and government intervention. [6]“

Beck’s religion is pure mythology (actually, it’s pure made up BS) and his beliefs about the Founders are based purely on random thoughts swirling around in his mixed up brain. He’s never read the Federalist Papers and has no idea what lead to the Revolution.

Glenn Beck told his followers they would have to “shoot them in the head” in order to bring an end to an alleged “communist” agenda.

The Holocaust was a solution to a percieved social problem, how is Beck’s solution any different? The answer is there is no difference.

When you kill your opponents you are stating you don’t believe in democracy. Republican politicians have been waging war against democracy, crosshairs, lock and reload, if the ballot doesn’t work the bullet will, don’t kill all the Liberals leave a few and stuff them in a museum, shoot them(progressives) in the head. All these statements are Republican statements and they are statements of hatred toward democracy, These statements are said out in the open.

The Preamble to the U,S Constitution says, “We the People” what this means is that all government officals from all three branches are to work for the benefit of the people and only for the benefit of the people. Our officials are not doing their job because they are working for the benefit of the owners of production, which goes against the Constitution, Read again, “We the People”. The government was formed for the benefit of the people not for the benefit of the owners of production.

Republicans hating the people, hating the Constitution, hating democracy and being opened about it. The tories aka Republicans have won with the help of Osama Bin Laden, their hero.

You cannot possibly learn anything of value, let alone “what is really going on in this country” — a totally hilarious assertion, BTW — when nearly everything that is presented as being “fact” is false, and the rest is deliberately distorted.

The “right track” of which you are speaking is the track upon which run the boxcars…. boxcars and cattlecars carrying away your former friends, neighbors, and co-workers… the “right track” that people like you deeply lust after… the “right track” that people like you believe — delusionally — will usher in the return of Jayzus. .. and if you get your way you and your delusion-driven dullard friends will gleefully exterminate three-quarters of the population. We’ve already seen Part I of this “snuff flick,” and so we already know who the perps are: the religion-drunk eliminationist haters.

The problem — one among a near-endless litany of problems — is that Jayzus *still* won’t show up even after you gleefully exterminate all of those people that you so virulently hate… and then what?

    Then what?

An incomplete description though. He is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict who has a background that includes several years as a shock jock during which time he did some profoundly cruel things to draw attention to himself.

“A couple days after Kelly’s wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, ‘We hear you had a miscarriage,’ ” remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. “When Terry said, ‘Yes,’ Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce [Kelly] apparently can’t do anything right — about he can’t even have a baby.”

Put that into the context of Beck’s respective anti-empathy and anti-social justice crusades. He’s a sick little man.

From my understanding, he makes 35 million a year to bring levity and joy (and let’s not forget love and compassion) into the living rooms of real Americans. Remember, he is also trying to help these people to hate unions (because they are communistic) and just trust their Executives that it is better to have an unlivable wage job than a livable wage job because money corrupts. and he does not want his sheep… I mean audience corrupted. There are people who spend their lives in local bars, day in and day out (God knows how they support themselves) who call my wife and I socialists, even though we own and operate four small businesses and don’t have time to scratch our asses. The cognitive dissonance is enough to give one a headache.

Merely having a book as one of many in a list posted on a myspace page does not qualify as being “a fan” of said book. There’s no evidence that he actually read any of the books listed.

But you’re actually suggesting that the act of reading a book is a contributing cause — even a proximate cause — to a shooting? Why don’t you already understand how preposterous that suggestion is?

Taking a step further out into the realm of witless, babbling foolishness, you want to suggest that the act of reading Marx, specifically, is that particular contributing cause…. when every undergraduate studying Political Science in the United States (and likely worldwide) is assigned numerous of Marx’ writings, including “The Communist Manifesto.” So by your strange notion, we should have had thousands of similar shootings, every week, for several decades now.

Your attempt at advancing what seems to aspire towards being an “argument” is laughably inept and vacuous.

You conflate the First Amendment right to speak with a government-issued privilege of licensed broadcasting. No one has any constitutionally-protected “right” to say anything — at all — over the airwaves or cable. And yes, the FCC does, in fact, exercise regulatory authority over cable, and has since 1962.

Such speech in broadcast and cable media has received customary equivalence-to-Press (equivalence to newspapers and magazines) treatment… but it is a matter of custom, and not a matter of settled law. In fact, the Supreme Court has decided (in the Red Lion case) that the FCC does retain legal authority to regulate content in both over-the-air broadcast and cable programming, even if the FCC chooses not to exercise that authority.

Typically, the FCC hears mostly from the industry, and not usually all that much from individual citizens… but if there was a popular groundswell of outrage at all of the violence-inciting inflammatory rhetoric coming from reich-wing hatetalkers, then the FCC would likely be pushed into exercising its authority.

I don’t believe it. This can’t be true, I tell you. Beck is full of rational ideas and solutions to the nation’s problems. He makes Ghandi look like Stalin. This man is a patriot and we need more of them. Damn. I forgot that I got over the rectal-ctanial inversion and left the repuke party years ago. My bad. Lo siento.

Liberals as communist, not even close. The fascist right on the other hand, are pretty close. Consider that both communism and the fascist capitalistic oligarchy to come are both corporatist style governments with only one “right” way to think. Both want to police the thoughts and morality of everyone in their state. Both want to spread their “revolution” abroad. Both despise freedom of speech, unless it is with agreement of the official lies and BS. Both call freedom slavery and slavery freedom. Both believe in the class war. And this is without me even giving it much thought. Is it any wonder these guys are obsessed with communism, they are just envious and waiting for the day to create their right wing version of it. A true “Billionaire Playboys Paradise” where the rest of you can fear the thought police while they frolic with their wealth.

The real story here is that some liberal whiner sat through seven months of Beck audio before arriving at this ‘gem’ and crowing triumphantly, “AHA!” Seroiusly?
It’s BS to take someone’s rhetoric and then interpret it literally. It’s a tactic of born of an immature and self serving attitude. Try this in a debate and you would swiftly lose face to your opponent.
Glen Beck is a smart, observant, witty character who happens to be opposed to you ideologically. No one gains a position of prominence accidentally. Deal with it, but grow up a little. Expend your energy to make change in an arena that means something.

    WRONG!

HERE IS THE GLENN BACK TRANSCRIPT IF ANY OF YOU FUCKTARD LEFTISTS GIVE A FUCK ABOUT TRUTH:

    WRONG!!!!

NO RAW STORY, YOU ARE WRONG!!! YOU ARE AS BAD AS FOX NEWS, AS BAD AS WHAT YOU HATE!!!

STEPHEN WEBSTER IS A FAT, STUPID PARTISAN HACK WHO HAS NO FACT-CHECKING SKILLS!!!

RAW STORY IS WRONG AGAIN AND AGAIN AS THEY TRY TO FAN FLAMES OF HATE!!!

Granted, its hard to understand WTF he was talking about, but here is the transcript and YOU ARE 100% WRONG AND PATHETIC:

Just because you in Washington and you who are so out of touch with life in the media, just because you don‘t believe in anything doesn’t mean nobody else does. We do. You know why you’re confused by this show? It’s because I believe in something. You don’t.

Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government.

I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don’t. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep’s clothing — change the pose. You will get the ends.

You’ve been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.

They are dangerous because they believe. Karl Marx is their George Washington. You will never change their mind. And if they feel you have lied to them — they’re revolutionaries. Nancy Pelosi, those are the people you should be worried about.

Your ranting pointless insults do nothing to bolster your cause. Your use of leftist signifies a simplistic binary outlook that relies on good/bad, left/right, and dem/repub. This demonstrates an overly simplistic world view where you believe broad statements can begin to encapsulate the amazing complexity of the modern world.

Go read some books that are more objective in nature, and return once you have actually attained the intellectual integrity you so wish to see in others. Right now the quality of your discourse is simply depressing. I hope you have someone close to you that cares enough to point out how alienating your tone and tenor is. If you maintain this level of expression you will not have many close friends or perhaps no friends at all.

    FROM THE ONION:
Political Pundits Surprisingly Good At Getting Inside Mentally Unbalanced Shooter’s Head

NEW YORK—According to media analysts, the nation’s TV commentators and political pundits have proved uncannily accurate when describing the deeply disturbed inner thoughts of accused Arizona gunman Jared Loughner. “It’s strange, but when it comes to getting inside the mind of this human being who seems to possess no empathy, sense of morality, or hold on reality, and who is motivated only by personal animus and self-glorification, the nation’s major political pundits have been amazingly adept,” said Horizon Media analyst Bob Cullen, who has studied extensive tape of commentators on all major TV news programs and found their remarks on “what the killer is thinking” to be consistently thorough and detailed across the board. “It’s almost as though they have some way of knowing, firsthand, exactly what this demented and highly dangerous individual with the eyes of millions upon him is going through.” Researchers at Horizon Media also reported that a number of prominent TV pundits appeared to be mimicking the exact same chilling gleam in Loughner’s eye for what they could only speculate was “dramatic effect.”

umm Raw Story did a pretty good job of presenting what Beck said. I see nothing of false journalism here. They cut out some of his rant but left what is important. And that is that he is pitting Dems up against Republicans and inciting violence.

Why are you trying to defend him anyway? This isn’t partisanship. This pointing out a fact.

And by the way. Talking in caps doesn’t get your point across any better than spitting in someone’s face while talking frantically. It just makes you look equally as insane as Beck.

Oh, apocalypto your poor misguided fearful soul who is led by the false prophets of greed. Let me enlighten you… again. The threat to this country has never been socialism or communism. It has and will always be Corporate Fascism. Try these quotes on for size:

“I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of the moneyed corporations, which dare already challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country.” – Thomas Jefferson

“History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and it’s issuance. – James Madison

“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.” – Abraham Lincoln

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it comes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism – ownership of government by an individual or by a group.
We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace–business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me–and I welcome their hatred.” – FDR

“… there are no limits to which powers of privilege will not go to keep the workers in slavery.” – Mother Jones

But there is a reason why one of the most powerful corporatist in the world hired him. To keep poor fearful souls like you dumbed down. One of essences of freedom is to not be conquered by fear. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out — is this wrong?”

FAIR did a great piece of Glen Beck and his hate-filled rants. The folks at FAIR are great. They take a topic, examine it, dissect it, research it and put out this incredibly well-documented pieces that wrap the entire controversy in one tidy little page. Here it is:

    Beck: Murder Fantasies Are Funny

    http://www.fair.org/blog/2011/01/19/beck-murder-fantasies-are-funny/

Appearing on the Today show this morning (1/19/11), responding to questions about his frequent murder fantasies (a specialty of Fox News personalities), Beck told host Meredith Vieira that he was just being funny. Beck said the host should ask Jon Stewart and the Simpsons the same question. “Comedy is comedy,” he explained.

    [...]

Vieira did not point out that while Beck is a political commentator, the Simpsons is a cartoon, and Stewart is a comedian who is not known for fantasizing about the murder of people with whom he disagrees.

“RAW STORY IS WRONG AGAIN AND AGAIN AS THEY TRY TO FAN FLAMES OF HATE!!!”

….and I suppose you deny fanning the flames of HATE with every post you make?

I suppose you advocate that you factcheck every single premise that you make? (obviously not, since you don’t seem to have very many facts at hand and only presupposed “truths” that you have absorbed from your trainers). I find it very interesting that your “truths” change from the actual source to your interpretation of them.

You are wrong that dems want revolution (except to kick the corporations out of our governing) – we don’t even want to take your guns….as we definitely are NOT communists nor socialists if you look up the actual definition. ……but, you just go on believing in the tripe put out there by the republican PR factory of lies…….

“you’re” in “you’re going to have to shoot them” is referring to Democratic leadership having to shoot the communists.

I usually don’t respond to my own comments but rather than answering each responder individually, I will this once answer myself.

You all do realize of course that this is irony, I am mocking the first amendment and second amendment pro-gun, pro-Beck, hate-spewers do you not? From most of the responses it doesn’t appear you do! Oh well!

  • Anonymous

I thought that the FCC also controlled cable but when I wrote a few days ago that the FCC should take action against Beck, Murdoch and The Fox Entertainment Channel most responders claimed that the FCC didn’t have any jurisdiction over cable channels. My response to those who wrote me that it didn’t have this control at ThinkProgess was “It should.” So if you are correct, since there seems to be some controversy whether they do or not, I am happy to read this.

If someone advocated shooting Republicans in the head, over interstate airwaves, it would be appropriate for the government to investigate. Under Bush-Chaney the Justice Department was used to defend torture.

Moreover it is not the mere size of the government, it is its policies and action. The “size of government” argument was constructed to attract unsophisticated voters.

That’s a good point. He’s not advocating shooting a Democrat or a Republican, just someone who adheres to what is currently an unpopular political theory. It’s really not something to be concerned about, and its certainly in line with what the Founding Fathers envisioned. Right or not, at what point does it become necessary? When all peaceful forms of change and protest are stripped away, violence becomes the only way. Would you surrender your right to speak out or would you fight for it? Democracy has often been born from revolution or the elites desire to avoid it by conceding some power to the masses.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

With one caveat, “Beck is telling people to go after the Democrats who are *perceived* communists and Marxists”, which means anyone you don’t like or might be suspicious of, like say the entire population of a federal building or a lefty church, as we’ve seen in the past.

I had no idea you were going to be so intimidated by a few words that should be in common usage. I am often sobered by the insistence that a few uncommon words an elitist makes. It is that kind of anti-intellectual behavior that holds us back from open and honest discussion on issues of import.

You might want to pause for a second and realize that some people just write or speak differently or using an altered lexicon from yourself. It is not word choice but instead the focus of your thought and intent of your action that make you wise or not.

I feel honest sorrow for Apocalypto not for his beliefs but for the form his expression has taken. He could have stated that people of an ideological bent often blind themselves to inconvenient contradictions and that people need to not pass judgment on someone based on one or two excerpts chosen by someone with a partisan tilt. While this argument wouldn’t really work well to defend Glenn Beck, due to the amazing amount of times he has engaged in bombastic rhetoric, it is at least a salient point that does work for the vast majority of people in the world. Instead Apocalypto choses to use his speech to express a base and divisive screed that certainly adds nothing to a discussion but in a selfish way helps him feel better about the obvious frustration he is feeling. I hope the caps laden post frenzy he went on helped him calm his mind a bit. The shame is really in the tone.

I wish him and yourself the best. Please pause in the future and realize that not everyone needs to be your friend or your enemy. Most times they are just people with differing or similar viewpoints that cannot be captured by the myopic categorizations of Democrat or Republican, Leftist or Rightist.

We are all people with similar interests, and goals in life; not some absurd bogeymen that you saw on TV, or heard on talk radio.

I live in a small town with a little AM radio station that plays Glenn Beck. I called them yesterday and talked to the programming manager and gave him this Glenn Beck quote and asked if his station is trying to incite one of our local citizens to go kill Democrats. By the way he defended Beck I could tell he’s a disciple. One thing he did tell me to do was to listen to the show and tell him where Glenn Beck is inciting violence.
The idea of listening to Glenn Beck is repugnant to me. BUT I realized I do need to listen but not for the reason the programming manager gave me. I need to listen in order to find out what local businesses are advertising during the show. Then I need to put pressure on those businesses, hopefully with the help of some of my fellow Democratic activists, and ask them not to support this crap on our local airwaves.
    That’s what we can do.

Once again the truth is distorted to push an agenda. Ask yourself who is going to have to shoot who? Don’t let someone else tell you and then believe it without looking into it first. If it is not important enough to research yourself then it certainly is not worth limiting ANY of our rights over is it? The quote about dropping the radical pose for the radical ends in the video came from Van Jones and the context of the WHOLE thing is that the democrats in question(not all of them) are typical politicians who think they can use crazy violent radicals and communists to get votes and then not deliver on their promises to those groups. Glenn was stating that if those crazy radical groups are double crossed by those democrats then those radicals will turn violent and the only way to stop them will be to shoot them (the radicals NOT the democrats) in the head, but those radicals will shoot back. He was NOT advocating violence he was warning the democrats that they are playing a dangerous game with crazy people and it will not end well. I am certain that I will be customarily attacked for this post, but so be it. Hopefully there will be some thinking people who will read this and if they think it is worth talking about then maybe they will do the research and see the original article for what it is.

While I personally fall into the group Glenn points out as being used by Democrats towards their own end; I would like to note that very few people on the radical left are equipped or inclined towards violence. I don’t think any of us have expected much from mainstream Democrats since at leasts LBJ. With that said I find it difficult to believe that Democrats have to worry about the left aligned radical groups targeting them. Any real wack-a-doo on the left would still target a Republican over a Democrat any day. It has nothing to do with one being good and the other bad but more to do with a gradients of pandering towards wealth, and the Republicans firmly support property, and corporate rights over those of common citizens.

With a different sampling I would say that Beck had a point. Comically enough I would say that if you said the same thing about Republicans using the Tea Party’s to ride to power I would say that I think the demographic of the (wack job) right is such that they would target a Republican due to thoughts that they were a “Traitor” or a “sympathizer”. The rights main issue is that they still identify and have common cause with politically viable candidates that are supported by a major party. Any long term member on the left doesn’t really identify themselves with 95% of the democratic party, and without that identification there is nothing to leave you alienated or with a feeling of betrayal. Especially not one that is strong enough to overcome our predisposition towards non-violent ends.

This all could just be my obvious bias seeping through but I think its not.

Glenn Beck is about as qualified to be a pundit as my Uncle Joe Bob. I have this niggling at the back of my mind that this is all schtick. Certainly, anyone can tell that he doesn’t have the education, facts, research, ability, logic or good sense to actually put forth a sane argument that will withstand scrutiny. He hasn’t been able to so far and it’s not looking good for the future. But if this isn’t comedy — and the fact that there are people out there who take him at his word and are willing to act on his idiocy — is more than concerning, it’s dangerous. And Fox News (God only nows how they can dare call themselves that) is responsible for what spews out of his mouth. If this nut job isn’t reined in, I foresee something truly horrible happening in response to his reprehensible and nonsensical spoutings.

I’ve previously made comment that ten years ago that the feedback from the murder of that abortion doctor would have been enough to take Glenn Beck off the air. Since that murder there has been more violence threatened against Beck’s targets. With the media now being controlled by corporations I think it’s time to sit down and consider the intent in allowing Beck. Limbaugh, Palin, O’Reilly, Hannity and the other right wingers who name names and talk violence against those individuals to continue doing so. I believe that the outrage against these individuals is misdirected and that it’s time to hold their corporate masters responsible.

You are no different from Glenn Beck with your vituperative comments. You make (mistaken) assumptions about people and then run off your mouth thinking how clever you are and how everybody will agree with you. The reason’s for the left’s failure is due to a muddled message that often does not connect with a majority of people. I am personally devastated by the election results. It is the self-righteousness and ignorance of people like you that the left has received the bad it has. All I said was that demeaning someone’s religion was out of bounds since it a deeply personal matter that nobody has the right to run down, especially for cheap political advantage. What an unfortunate belief. I am a nontheist myself but believe in the freedom of the individual to choose whether he wants to follow the tenets of a particular religion. You sound as intolerant as the right wing in this country.

I am going to reach back to the 2004 Bush campaign when people were arrested for bumper stickers and tee shirts. Anyone who defends Beck is a hypocrite to the tenth power. “No Blood for Oil” tee shirts got people arrested by republicans but, “They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.” is free speech? Such complete fucking bull shit needs to be talked about everyday because the nuts want to run the asylum again.

Are you serious? Olbermann is nothing like Beck! Never once did Keith encourage violence or try to rouse his viewers to do anything but learn and vote. Keith didn’t have to use hateful violent rhetoric because he has a brain. When a person has a brain they don’t have to spew all the demented and violent hate speech to make a living……….they use their intelligence. Beck has no brain left, he rants and like the rest of the republican talking heads, promotes violence and hate. They don’t have any integrity, morals or standards. They have no intelligent Ideas so their shows are just nonsense and their viewers are on the lower end of the IQ equation. Keith’s show being cancelled has more to do with the neocon’s controlling the media in this country than anything else. Our news is being controlled by big corporations and we live in a world governed by the military/Industrial complex. I have a feeling the rest of the liberal commentators will soon follow.

a “leftist version of Colbert”? I’d heard a rumor that some right-wing bozos actually believe that Colbert is “one of them”, but I couldn’t imagine ANYONE could be THAT clueless.
But you are, aren’t you? I mean, you really ARE!
And “drum circle”? “VW Bug”? “black panthers”? Sorry, you are neither clever nor witty. You are, however, pathetically lame and worthy of ridicule.

If you are just part of the left then you are not part of the group Glenn is talking about especially if you are against violence. He is talking about the extreme elements that do want to use violence to achieve their goals, but were willing to see if they could use stealth instead. While I think he is right in what he said I will say that you are absolutely right in your thoughts as well, but with the clarification that just like not everyone on the left is a violent radical, not all of the tea party supporters are either. You sound like someone who would realize this, but obviously not everyone reading these posts does so I just wanted to clarify. And no I am not a tea party supporter I am conservative, but my affiliation with Jesus is more important to me than any party.

One persons terrorism is another person freedom fighter. Terrorism is inevitably used by the weaker party of a fight against the stronger side. Powerful states don’t need that root, because they have so many other ways to enforce their way. Whether such terrorism is legitimate or not, is another story.

When are you going to retract this story full of obvious lies? I mean, seriously, you link to the transcript, yet you take the word of a hyper-partisan hack as if his interpretation of what it means is unquestionably true instead of reading it for yourselves and finding his interpretation to be utter bullcrap. You Leftists are so gullible.
