The international human rights group Amnesty International has sent a letter to US Defence Secretary Robert Gates calling for the “inhumane” conditions of US army private Bradley Manning to be reviewed.

Twenty-three year old Manning, who is accused of leaking information to WikiLeaks, has been held in a solitary cell for 23 hours a day and deprived of a pillow, sheets, and personal possessions since July 2010. He has been classified as a “maximum custody” detainee, which requires him to be shackled at the hands and legs during all visits, despite having no history of violence.

“We are concerned that the conditions inflicted on Bradley Manning are unnecessarily severe and amount to inhumane treatment by the US authorities,” Susan Lee, Amnesty International’s Programme Director for the Americas, said in a media advisory.

Psychologists for Social Responsibility (PsySR) has also sent a letter to the defense secretary, asking him to “rectify the inhumane, harmful, and counterproductive treatment” of the Army private.

Solitary confinement has been used in US prisons since the 19th century, but has become more prevalent with the rise of for-profit supermax prisons in recent years. Studies have found that, depending on the prison, anywhere from 0.5 percent of US prisoners to 20 percent of prisoners are kept in 23-hour-a-day solitary confinement.

The PsySR letter noted that the UN Committee Against Torture has expressed concerns about the use of solitary confinement in US prisons, and noted that, unlike supermax prisoners, Manning has not been convicted of any crime.

He worked as a low-ranking army intelligence analyst in Iraq before being arrested in May. He was later transferred to the US Marine Corps base at Quantico, Virginia.

It was widely believed that Manning provided WikiLeaks with thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, as well as 250,000 US State Department cables. He was charged with “transferring classified data” and “delivering national defense information to an unauthorized source.”

“Manning has not been convicted of any offence, but military authorities appear to be using all available means to punish him while in detention,” Lee continued. “This undermines the United States’ commitment to the principle of the presumption of innocence. The repressive conditions imposed on Manning breach the US’s obligations to treat detainees with humanity and dignity.”

He was placed on suicide watch for two days last week against the wishes of the jail’s psychiatrist, lawyer David E. Coombs told the The Washington Post.

Salon‘s Glenn Greenwald argued that the conditions in which Manning is held “constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture.”

“[T]he accused leaker is subjected to detention conditions likely to create long-term psychological injuries,” he wrote.

Greenwald’s concerns were also shared by Amnesty International and PsySR.

Even McCain wrote once that solitary confinement is worse than any form of torture. THIS IS THE TRUE FACE OF THE EVIL EMPIRE! Obomber the peace laueate once again shows his hatred for humanity and democracy. Once declaring to a zombie like crowd that he will make it easier for wistleblowers to reveal disgusting truths, he now takes a soldier who was sworn to defend what this country used to stand for and is making sure that he won’t even be mentaly fit for trial. Demonic.

While two men who condemned over 4,000 American military to die IN Iraq and hundreds more in Afghanistan, while declaring two illegitimate wars, and collaterally killing and injuring millions more are alowed to walk free, this man cannot even walk freely. America is doomed as a compass of morality. It’s not even a Crackerjack box compass of morality.

It shows how far we’ve come in our long but steady slide towards fascism that the last remaining differences between us and China are evaporating. We’re torturing people, and now we’re keeping political prisoners, and subjecting them to cruel and inhumane treatment.

Manning is a political prisoner. Assuming for the sake of the argument that which has not been proved, that he the source of the recently leaked material, he has committed no crime, on the contrary. Exposing official lies and corruption is not treason, it’s political activity and free speech. That makes Manning a political prisoner.

Obama, this is on your hands. If you are allowing this to happen, you are to blame. My fellow, progressives, liberals, socialists (whatever) please take a look at the man we voted for. His promises were hollow, his politics are horrific, and he is pretty close to being as corrupt as bush. I know you are still going to rationalize your support for him, but please open your heart and take a look at what is happening on his watch.

He stood up to a criminal organization, i.e. the United States government. And while it may not play out well, he had the balls to do it. It needed to be done. The U.S. is one of the worst criminal governments in recorded history and deserves every expose coming its way.

I don’t know what Bradley Manning’s motivations were in choosing to act as he did. I don’t know if he’s a hero or not. I don’t think it matters. What matters is that his human rights, civil rights, and legal rights are being violated in an appalling and outrageous way.
When one person’s rights are violated everyone’s are in jeopardy. The rot creeps out from the center. We’re all witnesses to the way this has been happening in our lifetimes. I’m glad Amnesty International has taken up Manning’s cause.

  • Anonymous

First of all Manning hasn’t been charged with any crime, let alone convicted. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Secondly, even assuming he was behind the recent Wikileak, he “stole” nothing. The US government still has the documents. At best, Manning made copies. Copying is not stealing.

Finally, We The People only permit our government to keep secrets for legitimate purposes of security. Covering up for criminality and corruption is not a legitimate reason for secrecy. Which means that to the extent that the published documents reveal government illegality, their classification was illegal and therefore null and void to begin with. Manning or any other government employee is under no legal obligation whatsoever to keep illegal secrets.

No. He “saw something (i.e. the murder of journalists) and said something.” He did precisely what Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano urges all Americans to do.

  • Anonymous

They have to torture him. Manning is not the guy who leaked the stuff. He’s a Private. He doesn’t have the security clearance to leak anything except the menu for the week. By making Manning insane the boy can’t defend himself. And, since torture of prisoners cannot be considered in the defense, he will make a good scapegoat.

This is Justice in America. Sucks, don’t it?

Pvt. Manning advances the cause for justice. Most likely, he will spend years in prison without being convicted of a crime. He has been tortured. He will be tortured more. When the time comes, he will be emancipated. It’s up to “us” to select that time. Who, then, are “we”?

Remember everyone. Words are meaningless, action is what gets things done.

We are all letting this happen, we are all responsible.

If everyone who’s currently sitting at their computers angry about this decided to get up and do some walking on the subject.. things would not be the way they now are.

The military/government clearly want Bradley Manning to commit suicide and one should question their motive. I have no idea if he leaked anything and the government hasn’t presented evidence of that – let alone a case. We know that there is a man, Lamos, involved who has a criminal history and appears to be an outright con artist so his words must be entirely dismissed. The government has used these confidential informant/snitches and made unconscionable deals with them that have, in fact, sent innocent people to prison. They also receive money. Not giving Bradley Manning a pillow and sheets does NOT keep him from committing suicide. Au contrare and anyone that says otherwise is a bald faced liar – including the men who should be court marshaled over this situation. Asking him to respond to anything every five minutes is TORTURE. Hopefully, Bradley Manning hires a civil attorney and puts these people permanently out of business. It appears that they are covering up criminal conduct. I agree – they are creating long term damage and they are the scum of the earth and ought to drag themselves out of Bedrock and into reality. We’ve all seen the video. Reuters described the video. Don’t bother telling me that what we read with our eyes, we can’t see with our eyes which appears to be the government’s deranged logic.

I heard on an independent radio program last night a political science professor, who had just written a book, talking about what the historical timeline was for the schism from a relatively “balanced” government between Labor and Business interests, to what is now a Business-controlled government.

And here’s the interesting part. He said the start of Labor’s decline wasn’t because of Nixon’s election in and of itself. He said Nixon would today be considered a center-left politician because his policies are far more left (on Labor particularly) than Obama’s are today. He also said, rather, that it was the actual manner and chaos of the fall of Nixon, and the “opportunities” that were presented to Business interests BECAUSE of his fall, that prompted and encouraged the organizing of vast numbers of Business groups, lobbyists, and $ to WDC on a scale that had never been done before.

I’d never heard or seen the Nixon “scenario” stated in such a way as to present his Presidency and all of it’s associated follies as the catalyst for the “Business Roundtables” environments we have today. It was fascinating to hear. I tried to find the program and the radio station on the net, but couldn’t. (It was an independent station 90.3 on my dial, not an NPR, and I think from Monterrey.)

Of course it is torture. They want a confession. We know that it is impossible he did what is claimed if there had been any security at all, and that what they really seek is for him to make up a story connecting him to Assange. That is why the Swedish farce against Assange is still being used to hold him. They want to break manning so he will bear false witness.
Watch for Assange to be disappeared.

I think as long as the military is saluting Barack Obama as an illegitimate
CIC, they have no right to expectation of privacy or respect. As long as they
are supported by tax money of civilians and use that money to follow orders
to wage illegal wars, (including in the US against American citizens) they
should suffer whatever it takes to make them answerable to their support
hierarchy, We The People, whether from Assange or from a citizen of the US.

    A couple of quick references:

Judge Laurence Silberman… the catalyst for that cabal of wealthy interests you’re speaking of, Acting Attorney General during the transition of the Nixon Administration to the Ford Administration, and the official tasked with reviewing all of J. Edgar Hoover’s secret files.

Richard Mellon-Scaife… scion of the Mellon banking family, once one of the wealthiest dynasties in the world, with controlling interests in Gulf Oil, Alcoa, Koppers Chemical, and Mellon Bank (Pittsburgh, PA), of course.

David Brock’s “The Republican Noise Machine,” a book published in 2004 which explores the set-up of that cabal in detail.

If the secrets Bradley Manning released were really that sensitive, why aren’t the people who allowed him to have free, unsupervised access to all that information in jail with him? Information that sensitive should never be that accessible to a single low level person. In short, Manning, regardless of guilt, is a scapegoat.

It is truly shameful to make somebody “live” this way when they have not even been tried or convicted. His solitary confinement conditions are meant to act as a warning to anyone else who might have any truth to pass on to the people of the United States. Fear of ending up in a Gulag kept the Soviet citizens quiet and in line. Eventually the whole state crumbled. I fear that we are going down the same path. Remember, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. The same thing applies to the so-called Patriot Act. They are making for a fearful people, not a free people. I blame the corporations which control the political process as well as those cowardly politicians who will say nothing and do nothing about it.

That’s nice, I’m sure you took your time to write that out. But you’re missing the point. I’m not talking about if it was just or not or who is wrong or right in this, You can say he’s innocent all you want but you have no proof that he is, only hatred for the government. here’s the thing though, NONE OF THAT MATTERS. My comment came not from a pro or anti-wikileaks standpoint. It’s just common sense that this would happen you take sensitive information from one of the worlds biggest governement and make them a global laughing stock and expect them to just walk back to class with their pants down around their ankles? of course there’s going to be ‘inhumane’ treatment. WE HAVE A TORTURE ISLAND and there you’re guilty until proven innocent. I hope for the best for the kid, I really do but if you didn’t see it coming you’re blind. OH NO OUR GOVERNMENT HAS SECRETS….what’s new? there’s not a governemt on this planet that doesn’t have secrets. because they’re run by humans and there’s not a human on this planet that doesn’t have secrets To expect a completely open government is like expecting the moon to rise at 2 in the afternoon.

Sooooo how did YOU and the United States government think committing war crimes was going to play out? Committing war crimes and continuing to do so is okay with you????? You don’t WANT that exposed?????? What kind of sick fuck are you?

  • Anonymous

How did I think it was going to play out? The same way it plays out for most every country that commits war crimes. People find out, people get internet mad, people don’t actually change anything. Oh, look I’m right. You found out, Instead of taking political action against the people you’re angry at you sit at your computer and decide to direct your anger towards someone who has as much power as you do and completely take a comment out of context. what kind of lazy fuck are you?

Maybe it was too neutral for you to understand since you’re so to one side, I’m not saying he was wrong or right. I’m not saying they were wrong or right. What I’m saying is say you saw a group of cops shoot a kid and you say hey I’m going to tell EVERYONE you shot a kid. How would you expect those cops to respond? It may be wrong what they’re doing but it’s common sense that it was going to be the outcome. That was all I was saying. If he’s innocent I hope he gets out of there soon. If he’s guilty I hope they show compassion and stop what they’re doing to him and just put him in a regular prison (because stealing is stealing and he knew the consequences of his actions when he joined the service, what he did was ballsy but still a crime in the united states. no this isn’t saying the united states isn’t guilty of it’s own crimes but see if you can go arrest the united states.)

If you’re really that pissed off and aroused by overusing question marks then go actually DO something about it instead of bitching from your keyboard.
