WASHINGTON – Barack Obama on Saturday urged entrepreneurs to focus on the needs of America and “make their mark.”

“If we make America the best place to do business, businesses should make their mark in America,” the President said in his weekly radio address.

“They should set up shop here, and hire our workers, and pay decent wages, and invest in the future of this nation,” stressed the president. “That’s their obligation.”

Obama is scheduled to address the Chamber of Commerce on Monday in what analysts see as a bid to smooth over their contentious relations of the past.

Last year, the chamber opposed Obama’s health care reform, his drive to change Wall Street practices as well as other legislative initiatives. The group also gave millions of dollars in campaign donations to Republican candidates.

The White House publicly responded by publicly accusing the chamber of funneling money from overseas to US political candidates.

Obama said that in his speech on Monday he would stress that government and businesses have mutual responsibilities and that if they fulfill these obligations together, all Americans would benefit.

“Our workers will succeed. Our nation will prosper. And America will win the future in this century just like we did in the last,” he predicted.

The address was one of a series of speeches given by the president recently that were aimed at promoting business in the country.

It came after government statistics made public Friday appeared to show the jobs market was heading in the right direction, but at the wrong velocity.

The private sector added 50,000 jobs, offsetting the loss of 14,000 payrolls in the federal and state governments.

Jobs were added in manufacturing, a key engine of the recovery from recession, up 49,000, and in retail trade.

Sectors typically affected by inclement weather such as construction shed 32,000 jobs.

Most other major industries saw little change in employment over the month, the Labor Department said.

This video is from the White House, broadcast Feb. 5, 2011.

Businesses have no obligation to do anything. That’s what freedom is about. They are free to succeed or fail on their own merit, and seeking their own goals, given that they do not coerce or defraud any consumer. Beyond that, STFU and business people will stop laughing at you. Profit-seeking in a free market that operates under the framework of a functioning legal system almost always has the exact benefit Obama is trying to promote. Going about it that way, though, comes off as a bit bossy for the sake of his image, and misinformed.
Business owners will not do what they see as being detrimental to their existence, so give them time, and the average is that they will do what makes sense, when it is prudent. Everyone that has been crying to the skies that businesses aren’t hiring enough (which seldom seem to be business owners themselves) are conveniently not addressing the cause of this behavior, which is a contracting/correcting economy. The world is the way it is for many reasons. You can’t change this with hopes and dreams. And all the talk about “America winning this century as we did last” is pretty outdated thinking for a self-described progressive man. We’re all flying around on this rock together; isolation and protectionism is not the optimal economic framework either for our own success, or that of the world as a whole.

“Obama urged entrepreneurial focus on America”

Does he mean like the Communist Chinese are trying to do with a California-based aviation company that wants to bid on US Defense Contracts? And guess what folks, this fucked up government will most likely award contracts to the fucking COMMUNIST Chinese! I mean shit, the COMMUINIST Chinese are already selling civilian aviation components here. Why is that allowed?

Obama, you really are an ASSHOLE! We already did that, and then the jobs were sent to China and other low wage paying countries by AMERICAN PISSANT BUSINESSES.

As I keep saying, all IMPORTED PRODUCTS must be tagged with a high tariff that will make it cheaper to produce here than overseas.

Kindly get your head out of your ass, get the jobs back here, and make the fucking corporations and companies not paying their fair share of taxes pay the fuck up!

And please, stop mouthing off with the meaningless entrepreneurial bullshit!

Sure, why don’t I open a coffee shop, ya little SH!T! Why don’t we all do that? We can’t start any other business because every multinational corporation in the world makes so much money they could squash anyone like a bug who tried to do or make ANYTHING that they do. As long as monopolies exist, no one will ever have a chance at making a decent living. The ONLY way to tackle the issue is break up corporations on the international level… And you, you piece of sh!t corporate wh0re Obama, had a chance to do this at the G20 a couple of years ago and you didn’t! So go fnck yourself!

Fixing the economy is a relatively simple task. Been done many times before all over the world using PROPERLY IMPLEMENTED Keynesian stimulus spending. It’s a very straight forward process.

The are 5 examples of Keynesianism fixing economies in the past 80 years. If you don’t know what they are you shouldn’t be commenting on economic matters at all.

The reason right wingers must pretend Keynesianism doesn’t work is because it requires tax increases on the rich. Obama is not using PROPERLY IMPLEMENTED Keynesian stimulus spending. Thats why the economy is not recovering and why he will probably not get reelected.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Business people are a tiny minority

Business will employ the people at a decent living standard or the people will do what they did / are doing in Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen ect.

In other words they will get in the street and prevent the businesses from being able to make money. Seen the Egyptian stock market lately genius ?

    entrepreneurial focus?

The big banks crashed the economy. The big banks got bailouts, The big banks give themselves bonuses for taking 364 days off of the year. One of those days in the 365 days is when they actually show up in the office to see if someone is still dusting the frame of the painting in their office.

The entrepreneur needs to borrow from these predators and your speech sounds like a cheap commercial plug for the banks that crashed this nation.

Reaganomics failed. It’s a loser. We all suffered. Stop sucking up to the cheap B actor who pretended to be president. Reagan pushed this nation toward the cliff. Bush Jr pushed the nation over the cliff. Milton Freidman should be kicked into the streets of Haiti so he can suffer for all enternity his own shock treatment.

Get rid of this stupid state created legal creature called “Corporation is a person”.

A “Corporation is a person” is a lawyer’s tricked out language of blah, blah, blah supported by screwed up Conservative judges that doesn’t know a piece of paper from flesh and blood. Cut a state legal paper it doesn’t bleed you stupid right wing fucks. Cut a newborn baby it bleeds you stupid right wing suck rich man’s shit off the ground clowns.

Get rid of this Corporation as a person status and the power will be back in the hands of the people and the Republican Party will wither and die because they are not the party made up of People, they are blood suckers for Corporations.

Once the people gain control of their own nation, once the people realize Fox Fraud News is a 24/7 impersonation of Billy Mays screaming in your ears and turn that station off for good; other than a sick truck driver at home in his trailer and it’s 3 in the morning. Once the nation is truly Power to the People again. Then this nation will turn for the better.

Make Reagan the loser go extinct and you will have sunshine again.

Yet business owners like me can’t make enough to hire workers because of gas prices, cost of living, taxation, fees, payroll tax, energy, etc.

And Obama is surrounded and caters to the offshore bankers who are in a Feudal system against the people by artificially controlling energy and attempting to ram through “Carbon Taxes” through Fascist Government.

Tell Obama’s insiders about “Entrepreneurship”. It’ll soon be illegal to start your own business without permission from General Electric or the EPA.

The Government and their sponsored minions in high Corporate positions won’t share the pool of money.

Obama is a joke if he thinks taxing people to Serfdom will make his Entrepreneur Utopia come along. And I’m not talking about taxes on the ‘rich’ I’m talking about business taxes to mostly Middle Class sole owners. Only IDIOTS think ‘rich people’ create jobs or are entrepreneurs.

You say you want Entrepreneurs to thrive Obama? Well then stop inside deals to ‘established’ Corporations and stop Government from putting a boot on the necks of people who want to actually HIRE people and invent or expend.

The Government is the goalkeeper and THAT is the damn problem.

I don’t know who pulled that “50,000″ jobs number ouf their butt, but the data I checked indicates somewhere between 32,000 to 36,000 jobs, and exactly how many of those are temporary, or part-time is in dispute.

Like the majority of Americans, I’m deeply tired of those endless phony stats, which don’t check out when one closely examines the BLS data online (always with those magical “adjustments” which create numbers) and ADP payroll data (which is somewhat more accurate, but not by much).

And to that douchey who claimed America wasn’t a “police state” — please bother to read the news about the Bush administration’s rounding up and indicting protesters prior to the repub-CON convention and Dem’s convention.

And the Obama Administration’s jailing of whistleblowers, as in Bradley Manning and Bradley Birkenfeld, and the harrassment of numerous others (Drake, Edmonds, etc.).

And the crooks running the FBI, CIA, DIA, CIFA, etc., etc., etc.

Just because you can’t make a go of your own business doesn’t mean that the world’s against you. There are a lot of business people in America who are doing pretty well theswe days because they’ve taken profitable advantage of the tax breaks and stimulus money that have flooded the economy in the last two years. There are intelligent people in business and unintelligent people in business, government policies have nothing to do with IQ.

At an average clip of 150,000 people young adults entering the job market each month, there is no net creation of jobs, at that level.

The 9% number is artificially low.

    http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/unemployment-charts

Take your pick, which rate seems more “right”, and reflective of the mood out there, among people you know, etc.

  • Anonymous

Ok let’s get this straight–the private sector added 50,000 jobs–the government sector shed 14,000 jobs that accounts for the claim made in a story yesterday that 36,000 jobs were created but then this story says that the construction sector shed another 22,000 jobs which cuts the new jobs down to only 14,000 yet just yesterday the government said the unemployment figure dropped .4 percent from 9.4 percent to 9 percent.

At that time I showed that if 36,000 jobs represented .4 percent of the unemployed that Could not have more than 846,000 unemployed people in the United States. Using these new numbers we get unemployment figures that are much smaller. For 14,000 jobs to represent a .4 of one percent drop in unemployment we would have to have a total number of unemployed of only 329,000 people in America.

Even more surprising if 329,000 people represent 9 percent of the work force, we only have a total workforce of 3,655,500 people. So for these figures to be in the least bit accurate all around we would only have a little over 3.5 million people in a country of 306 million of so working–no wonder we are continuously being told that Social Security and Medicare are in trouble!

  • Anonymous

what bunk! we have 9.4% unemployed who still get an unemployment check and 9.2% long-term unemployed no longre getting that check. that is 19+% {http://www.shadowstats.com/} yet, when we presented SBA with four, count em, 4 sound business plans for startups… imagine our shock and dismay to find that NOT ONE THIN ROOSEVELT DIMEOF THE ‘STIMULUS’ WENT TO SBA OR STARTUPS!

now the only conceivable way to put 30 million back to work is by a massive, $4-6 trillion 4-6 year crash program to back a million or more new startup businesses. and what could these do for us? well, for starters, they could repair our crumbling infrastructure which GAO estimated in 2005 was in urgent need of $3.5 trillion.

but instead of seizing the assets of the firms and execs who demolished the economy with their schemes… nada. more tax cuts for the cozy. no convictions of the crooks. this country is unaware that the other shoe is about to drop. then there will be no doubt this is a depression, and nothing great about it.

Frankly, given all the barriers to entry that the states and Federal Government (and local governments and zoning boards) have put in the way of small business-

There is no way we are going to see a resurgence of entrepreneurial businesses in the USA. Why would you put what little savings you had into a business where the government taxes you so heavily and then tells you how to run it. The paperwork alone is so odious that most small businesses hire people for that, costing them thousands and thousands a year just to file tax and employment forms. And its not like there are loans for most new businesses, its all out of pocket or on credit cards.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/42THFKXIPMJHQBIH6OPI4RVIDY Thebes

Oh, and this concept of government and businesses (corporations mostly) having “mutual responsibilities”. That used to be called Fascism.

  • Greg Eckhart

    That’s stupid.
In a monopoly economy run by a few corporations, any ‘enterprise’ that is successful will simply be collapsed because they can let it grow to the point of competition.
All ‘new’ corporations have been spawn in the areas of the economy that didn’t exist, like computer technology. In a very short period of time, many companies either disappeared or got gobbled. The traditional industries are the result of combines and mergers with precisely the point to CONTROL the market…not provide for it’s own competition.
    Dumb rich guy.

At ground level, entrepreneurship means “entering the market”. If a single inventor can’t do that, nothing happens anywhere else of an entrepreneureal nature. If a good innovative product can’t find investment funds, the market cannot be entered. Period. Talk to the Chamber of Commerce, the banks, the Fed, big business all you want. It won’t happen.

It will take 22 million jobs to get us back to 5 percent unemployment and 105,000 jobs per month to keep up with new entrants. Government is still giving tax breaks to companies that outsource jobs. Government still refuses to force employers to us E-Verify (to stop employment of illegals) and government still allows and encourages business to use H1/Green Card/Guest workers. Neither party will do anything about illegals or guest workers or outsourcing because both parties are owned by the multinationals.

Do you know the fees of running a business. The multiple things we have to fill out and red tape we have to get across? It costs TIME, and time is money.

Also the cost of living creates overhead. Gas Prices, Shipping because of those prices, insurance or NON insurance for an employee which has to apply as an independent contractor, and other things..

If Obama wants to have an “Entrepreneurial” revolution of sorts, maybe he should listen to Middle Class people who actually START businesses. Not Corporate BILLIONAIRES who think ‘business’ s having some big factory pump out trinkets.

And maybe we can also dispel the myth once and for all that GOVERNMENT should create jobs.

WRONG, we the PEOPLE, should be allowed to create jobs from our own ideas with as little hand holding from the Gov as possible. THAT’S the only way to make it grow. Or else you put a noose around us and people expect Government to furnish or create.

That’s it exactly. Government is what we make it. Right now we have bad government because we’ve let Conservatives have too much control. It’s worse than that actually. Most here still “hope” rather than do. Most still say, what are THEY gonna do about it, rather than what am I going to do today to make this existence a life worth living.

People are indeed listening to this corporatist rather than their hearts.

Apparently we Americans have become quite comfortable accepting the lies told over and over again by our leaders and their globalist string pullers.

Ask yourself, when did the American Entrepreneurs throw in the towel? The answer of course if NEVER.

It’s always been the government policies that have eviscerated this once great nation and stymied our growth, never the will, determination or inventive nature of our people that our social structure allowed to produce.

It wasn’t an entrepreneur that passed NAFTA, nor was it an entrepreneur that created our incredible trade deficit.

It was the millionaire boys club that people keep sending to DC. They’ve lined their pockets while fleecing ours and continue to do so.

The phrase “Made in USA”, once the norm on packaging coast to coast is now seldom seen on any packaging of manufactured goods we buy.

Every purchase of something that says “Made in China” on the box is a sign of our acceptance of these policies and lowers our countries ability to be self sufficient while also curtailing our people’s ability to be the nation that brought real goods to the world.

All we bring nowadays are bullets, bombs, and destruction in the name of securing the national resources of other countries for the globalists to distribute, oh, wait, I meant to keep us safe from “terrorists”.

I say the terrorists we should working to eradicate are right here in Washington DC.

But now that this stooge currently at the helm has said a few words on the matter I can go to bed now, knowing everything will be OK on Monday, NOT!

Rent is up, while housing prices fall. Since people have lost their homes landlords have a glut of customers to rent to hence the increase in rent. My apologies for the confusion. Regarding Gas, heating oil, all have been on a steady increase for several years. As each peak season ends, the price never falls back to the previous low, only a portion of the low.

As far as economies one that should be at last looked at is the German model which is a social democratic based system.

Entry into business costs money and most don’t have the capital to start a new business. Only 5% of new business succeeds. Large corporations have made many areas impossible to compete in and the barriers that congress has put up on behalf of big business inhibit small business startups and growth. I used to contract IT but it’s gone overseas as well as most of my engineering friends jobs. Intellectual property is not a growth area and more of it is going to China (who has more patents this year than the US). An idea in manufacturing is going to overseas where the means of production are cheaper.

What wasn’t said by the President in his SOTU address is that Americans that don’t have the qualifications that are not going to college are out of luck as well as those that do go to college but don’t have the grades or a major that is in demand.

I really would like America to get back to creating ideas and being at the forefront of technology, but without the means of production, few people will benefit.
