WASHINGTON – More than 15 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans were unemployed in January, far higher than the national jobless rate and the highest since the government began collecting data on veterans in 2005, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday.

That rate could go even higher if the U.S. military begins winding down operations in Afghanistan and a flood of veterans return home looking for work, a veterans’ advocate said.

“These numbers need to be a wake up call for all Americans because there is really no excuse for this,” said Todd Bowers, deputy executive director for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

The government said 15.2 percent of veterans were out of work in January, up from 12.6 percent the same month a year ago. This compares with a overall U.S. unemployment rate of 9.0 percent seasonally adjusted and 9.8 percent without adjustment. The government data for veterans is only presented without adjusting for seasonal differences.

Join the military and get ahead in the job market…

What a crock of shit. More like join the military and never land a job again.

Only the dumbest of the bunch would slap on that farce of a uniform to become an imperial killer thinking they are getting ahead. Army clowns in particular, I knew it was going to hell for the army when they made everybody wear a black beret, a once proud symbol of honor now standard issue to “boost their ego’s”…..

Damned near all of them in now are in with exemptions, from insufficient education, all the way up to felony convicts.. The military has become Americas short bus. Little surprise they can’t get jobs or hold them.. What did you think you would have coming home sending these mush-headed morons repeatedly into two intensive counter-insurgency wars???

I retired from the army in 1995 on a medical discharge shortly after my first re-up. So, F U, I know what I’m looking at. The guys and gals coming out today have NO job skills, NO discipline and poor communication skills, they were all just truck drivers and trigger pullers.. Very few had a technical MOS, at the end of the day it seems they all just ended up as 88m and 11b in function, with older private contractors doing all the real technical work.

These chickens are coming home to roost. And there ain’t enough hen scratch to go around.

Wow, that is stunning! If the national unemployment rate is around 9% and the REAL unemployment rate is closer to 25%, then the veteran rate of 15% must be closer to 32% or so. Very sad.

I wonder what the civilian jobs that Senator Patty Murray is thinking about are. Is there somewhere where there is a lot of opportunities to enter the work force. It is too bad that those that were sold on “Serve Your Country” did not realize that they were serving the coporate masters that control the Federal Government.

Our jobs have been out-sourced and the products are allowed to enter this country without Duty or Tariff because of the New World Order forces that completed their takeover during the twelve years of GOP rule from 1981 – 1993. These veterens will come to realize that the industry of America is war and it’s workforce is soldiers.

When the workers of this country decide that they are the country and that the public good becomes the driving force of our direction instead of coporation profit then we will get jobs back. Until then, the idea is why educate the population in this country if we are to be the enforcement wing of the New World Order

Today, I had the displeasure of running into one such hero who eagerly booted my car because my meter overrun by 5 minutes. He is very proud of doing this a robbing his fellow citizens of $75 because according to him “it pays his bills.” So I said, next thing, they’ll be telling you to kill people and the son of a bitch looked me in the eye and said proudly “Oh, I’ve already done that. I’m a blah blah blah” to which I said “beautiful, you fuck people and you kill them to. Nothing like a paid killer.” The shameless mother fucker actually laughed and began to sing!

So fuck them all! See if I have any sympathy for them.

every job that goes on a state run job source is presented to vets first and held closed to public for 2 days so that vets get first choice on any job so either they haven’t been told or they’re on R&R for a while when they get home.

Maybe someone should have told them that while they were away fighting for the American way of life, their leaders were exporting jobs to China.

  • Taleisin

When they say ‘support the troops’, they mean ‘support the war’.

Maybe they should go work for Mubarak, they already have experience oppressing Arabs.

Remember, wave your plastic flags made in China to “support the troops” as their federal leaders betray them and ignore them.
