Fresh off a recent controversy about his potential conflicts of interest in the Citizens United decision, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas faced new questions this week about his judicial impartiality. This time, legal ethicists raised questions about the lobby group launched recently by Thomas’ wife, Virginia.

Critics say Virginia Thomas’ activities at Liberty Consulting could easily create a conflict of interest for her husband whenever he rules on a case affecting one of his wife’s clients. And they argue Virginia Thomas’ political involvement is yet another sign of the “politicization” of the nation’s highest court.

Justice Thomas “should not be sitting on a case or reviewing a statute that his wife has lobbied for,” Monroe H. Freedman, a legal ethics expert at Hofstra Law School, told the New York Times. “If the judge’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned, that creates a perception problem.”

Virginia Thomas’ activities “show a new level of arrogance of just not caring that the court is being politicized and how that undermines the historic image of the Supreme Court as being above the political fray,” Arn Pearson, a lawyer for progressive watchdog group Common Cause, told Politico.

According to its website, Liberty Consulting is dedicated to “effective advocacy and assistance on behalf of those liberty-loving citizens and organizations who wish to preserve limited government, free enterprise, national security, individual liberty and personal responsibility.”

Virginia Thomas “plans to leverage her 30 years of experience as a Washington ‘insider’ to assist non-establishment ‘outsiders’ who share her belief in our core founding principles and values,” the website states.

In an email sent to congressional chiefs of staff last week, Thomas described herself as “a self-appointed ambassador to the freshmen class and an ambassador to the tea party movement,” Politico reported.

Thomas is indeed an “insider,” having worked as an attorney for the US Chamber of Commerce in the 1980s and a policy analyst for then-House Majority Leader Dick Armey in the 1990s, before becoming involved in the tea party movement in recent years.

It was as the head of the tea party group Liberty Central that Virginia Thomas began attracting high-profile criticism. She stepped down from the group last fall, after a public spat with Anita Hill, the lawyer who accused Thomas’ husband of sexual harassment during his confirmation hearings in 1991.

Thomas sparked controversy when she demanded, in a phone call, that Hill apologize for her testimony. After Hill refused to do so, Thomas admitted it was “probably a mistake” to have made the request. She stepped down from Liberty Central soon thereafter, but denied the move had anything to do with the Hill controversy.

Common Cause last month filed a request with the Department of Justice to investigate Thomas’ role in the Citizens United ruling, arguing that the justice’s ties to conservative groups such as those run by the billionaire Koch brothers may have compromised his objectivity. The group leveled the same allegations against Justice Antonin Scalia. They hope to have the two justices disqualified from the ruling.

Justice Thomas found himself yet again at the center of unfriendly attention when it was revealed that for 13 years he had failed to report his wife’s earnings on annual disclosure forms he is required to file. Thomas amended the statements going back to 1997.

Whether or not Virginia Thomas’ latest venture will be successful remains to be seen. Politico reports a level of hostility among Republicans towards the supreme court justice’s wife, with some viewing her as an opportunist cashing in on her husband’s high-profile name.

“Ginni’s reputation around town is now even more of a fake entitled woman who is only here because of her husband,” an unnamed source told Politico.

Her husband did not report her income of 680.000 a year from teabaggers for five years but he was allowed to redact the last 20 years of income tax , the same thing wesley snipes went to prison for I believe..He needs to be impeached..

How hard is it to impeach a Supreme Court Justice?

    This guy sure deserves it.

The guy sits there case after case, never asks a question,

Ginni and Slappy wont to live like wealthy people and his pay check isn’t doing it. An offer was made by the Koch Bros. for Slappy’s vote to violate the Constitution. Rather then had over big bucks the agreement was to pass the money to Ginni by using the Tea Party as a front. No one has bothered Senator Hatch as his kick back money goes to his fake charity. Slappy just does as he’s told and Ginni now makes sure he gets paid for the votes. Don’t look for Scalia, Altio or Roberts to say anything as their kick back money is funneled also. Alito’s wife is making the Family money from Koch Bros. by doing speeching events. Scalia is the smartest of them all his money goes right to the bank in Italy where the IRS can’t touch it. Roberts has a brown honey and a wife who’s a lawyer with kids he never sees. Roberts was told to get ready for his appointment as he had to look like what some call the ideal American Family. Roberts got married to a chosen woman and quickly adopted two kids for the part. One slip was his vacation with his brown honey when he had the heart attack with no family around. Those freelance reporters caught the picture of the honey looking out as Roberts was taken away to the hospital. But as quick as he recovered he continued his vacation with the pretty brown honey on his boat. Why do all these white powerful men seen to have the hots for the brown or foreign honey woman but spill so much racism. I guess Storm Thurmond is the only white man who went black and couldn’t go back.

You have got to be kidding. Remember Tom Daschle and his second wife, lobbyist Linda Hall? This music has been played for decades. How many Clinton appointees to the bench had spouses and family members who were high-dollar advocates of every issue under the sun? Does Mme.Justice Ginsberg recuse whenever ACLU issues arise (that’s where she used to work)? Will Sonia Sotomayor recuse when health care comes up?

    Get real.

We exist in an economic model that is designed to impoverish us. You already know that. But what you have forgotten is that the “system” in which we operate is based on one fundamental principle, faith in that system. Once you decide to step out of the system , one..step..at..a..time, one progressively realize that ultimate truth; their model of wealth transfer only works as long as you choose to believe in it and participate in it.

This is not as easy mental state to achieve. I am nearly there and I can tell you it is enlivening, energizing and absolutely the greatest contribution one can make to one’s own spiritual journey to Truth.

I’ve started writing about it in a way that might make sense to some. The concept I am developing is called Disintermediation. You can read about it here, if you desire.

It is easily seen in the perniciously politicalized Supreme Court. Yes, it can happen here.

Thomas did not include in his new submissions any information about Ginni’s work for Liberty Central, a tea-party-affiliated group. The group’s 2009 990 tax form did not include any payments to her and she stepped down from her official role with the group in November.

All the information can be found by googleing Ginni and her non disclosed taxes. I understand people who will excuse this crime because their either Tea Party supporters or just think because a person hold a title their above the law. Those who have been audited might think different knowing a lawyer and US Justice doesn’t feel it’s important for him to follow the same rules. What was the shocker is Ginni’s income hasn’t been reported in 13 years but Slappy did amend it as he sent it to Chief Justice. Wonder how many people in jail for not doing the same thing,

Thomas was a colossal joke played on the country. The anti-abortion conservatives wanted him in and figured correctly that because he was black that liberals would have a hard time voting against him. His qualifications were minimal and he was embroiled in the Anita Hill crap. My take at the time of his nomination was why not dump him and find someone better qualified for the court and without all the accusations of moral sleaziness and harassment?

He’s proven that he’s not qualified and just parrots the conservative partisan line and his wife is another batshit crazy teabagger that probably stuffs his head with Glenn Beck paranoid bullshit. He should recuse himself from everything that comes to the court.

I guess we’re stuck with the asshole and his fucked up wife though. Thank you GWH Bush.

He has however, as far as I know, done his job well and faithfully voted anti-choice on all abortion issues that come up. That was his sole mission.

Justice Thomas “should not be sitting on a case or reviewing a statute that his wife has lobbied for,”

-No, that is far to simplistic for the way Corporate Citizens are set up to block their owners from liability. He should not be sitting on any cases or reviewing statute for anything his wife has lobbied for, nor should he have anything to do with any cases that affect anyone who shares a boardroom with the directors of the Corporations his wife works for. And so on. Corporations are so interlinked today that they cannot be called individual entities except in the legal sense of incorporation. And they exist solely to shift wealth from the masses to the elite, same as they ever have.

We like to believe that our courts live in a neutral bubble. That is a lie. Judges who are elected run under an (R) or (D) next to their name – hardly a sign of neutrality. A judges actions and beliefs are discerned by those around him or her, the functions they attend, etc…

Which is why there are multiple members on The Supreme Court. To dilute those partisan political activities that judges tend to engage in. That time is over. This Supreme Court has demonstrated their conservative tendencies to mold their vision upon the public.
