A state senator in Alabama said Monday his call for Republicans to “empty the clip” on the issue of illegal immigration was taken out of context.

At a Republican breakfast in Cullman County, Alabama, last weekend, State Sen. Scott Beason reportedly urged his fellow Republicans to “empty the clip and do what has to be done” to enact stricter immigration laws, the Cullman Times reported.

Beason has since been flooded with angry calls denouncing the remark, which came in the wake of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson last month. That tragedy saw 19 people shot and six killed, including a nine-year-old girl, sparking a debate about the use of violent metaphors in American politics.

Beason on Monday told the media the comment was taken out of context, and he did not mean to suggest violence against illegal immigrants.

“No way was I urging anyone to do harm to Hispanics or illegal immigrants,” Beason told the Birmigham News. “I would never do that.”

The first-term senator and veteran of Alabama’s House of Representatives explained he had told a joke about the difference in how Democrats, Republicans and southerners reacted to being held up by a mugger.

“I began telling the story about a family visiting a big city when some guy with a knife or gun jumps out from behind some bushes and comes at them,” Beason said. “The story talks about how a Democrat handles the situation, I think I said the Democrat tells the guy he’ll put together a charity basketball league or something to raise money to help him. The second family, that father [the Republican] has a gun but takes only one shot. The third family, and that father [the southerner] also has a gun, but he empties the clip. He solves the problem.”

In his speech, Beason faulted the state’s Democrats for what he said was a lack of interest in addressing illegal immigration, and suggested that the issue came down to electoral politics.

“Democrats do not want to solve the illegal immigration problem because they know, this is a fact, that when more illegal immigrants move into an area, when their children grow up and get the chance to vote, they vote for Democrats,” he said.

Many commenters at the Cullman Times reacted with hostility to Beason’s remarks.

“Republicans control the Alabama Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, governor’s office, Cullman County Commission and have controlled these for several years, so who really is to blame,” wrote user “alan bolling.”

“The guy should apologize to Congresswoman Giffords, Christina Taylor Green and everyone else who had a clip emptied toward them in Arizona,” user “disapppointed GOP” wrote. “Can’t blow this off as playing to the GOP crowd.”

    Further comments by Beason:
“No way was I urging anyone to do harm to Hispanics or illegal immigrants. I was clearly referring to the paper clip box on my desk. It’s you damn media types and liberals that always blame us Christian Republicans for everything.”

Any mention of how Reagan gave amnesty during his reign which really opened the flood gates? How about how W deported fewer illegals and prosecuted fewer businesses who hired illegals than Clinton or Obama? Of course not. Facts always get in the way of a conservative rant.

Absolutely unacceptable for a representative to make such a abhorrent statement. Whether his statement was taken out of context or not, we all have a responsibly to choose words that will clearly and concisely portray our intent and this is especially true for an elected official. Furthermore, his joke was entirely tasteless. (Just what does a knife wielding attacker have to do with immigrations?) He owes all Democrats, Republicans and Southerners a heartfelt apology. As a Southerner, I can assure the Senator that most Southerners do not feel this way, no matter what our views on immigration are. And he most assuredly owes all immigrates, legal or otherwise, the biggest apology. It is time for all reasonable people to call-out these bigots and demand a higher level of discourse from all elected officials. Enough is enough.

So, does this mean that when some illegals are shot, we can charge Beason with inciting domestic terrorism? Even if the charge doesn’t stick, it will send a message to the other dumb idiots to either think before speaking or not speak at all. Bring him up on charges of inciting domestic terrorism, democrats, if you have the balls to come out of hiding, which I doubt.

    “empty the clip” ?

I find the ‘joke’ as repugnant as the reference to the joke. “Emptying the clip” into a knife wielding mugger is murder. Plain and simple. Once you have stopped an attack with a shot, you stop. But then again, this twit is probably such a lousy shot he would probably miss after emptying his clip. Though I get the feeling he is playing with an empty clip already.

Sorry man, there is nothing else that you can mistake that statement as saying. Using gun rhetoric has become clearly intentional. “Emptying the clip” is not as not as common as “taking aim”, you have to think about using a gun before saying it. Please don’t tell me that he was using it in terms of a paper clip that would be “removing the clip”.

Clearly the GOP has decided to incite and play up to the least common denominator in this country. These people basically think that anyone who believes contrary to them is an animal who doesn’t deserve to live. Beason’s sheet must have been at the cleaners that day because those words were better suited for a Klan rally.

Oh and Beason’s joke is a bit off. The Repug wants the guy to jump out of the bushes at him so he can kill him.

Huh, when Beason tells that joke, does he picture the man jumping out of the bushes as a white guy?

  • 7rob7

    “… African Americans as muggers…”

Where did you read that? Do you have access to a different transcript than RawStory posted?

There is nothing in that “joke” about African-Americans: only that the way to “solve” the “illegal” immigrant “problem” is by gunning it down with every bullet in the clip.

    THAT is the “dmn” point.

(Well, that, and that conservatives from the South are trigger-happy, but that’s yesterday’s news.)

  • 7rob7

Wait… You mean there are other kinds of republicans?

  • Anonymous

So he uses an analogy about killing a robber and says we need to “solve the problem” before immigrants have children. Then, when he receives bad press, he states that he didn’t intend any violent rhetoric??? Well, dude, I am pretty sure you meant for violence. There are a million different ways to say “we need to solve the immigration problem” without saying you should empty a clip into immigrants and then telling a story about killing a mugger….Hey everyone, we should send democrats to the gas chambers, it’s our final solution against liberals. Of course I mean that metaphorically.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2BL2BMGKRQFI5RE66OP2H2ROLU James a Polk

Okay, Mr. Beason, let’s keep it in context and analyze what you’ve said. Since you were talking about “illegal immigration,” and we all know that we’re NOT talking about White Canadians sneaking in through Michigan or, somehow, White Swedes swimming the Rio Grande, then we are talking about brown people. So you’re saying that the brown “illegal immigrants” come here to steal money from–and kill–white people, because, let’s face it, there aren’t a whole lot of brown or black Republicans…and it seems that this kind of “joke” is always told by a white guy (I’ve never heard Michael Steele or Marco Rubio rip a joke like that). So don’t go around saying that the perpetrator in this scenario is a drugged out white guy. It doesn’t fly.

Another way of looking at this is: Jesus is walking with his disciples. A guy pops out in front of them and demands some silver. A) Jesus talks to the guy and gets him to see that God’s Law (The Universe’s Law) is that what he does to another, he does to himself. We all have sinned and perpetuating sin is not blessed. B) Jesus pulls out a gun and shoots first before asking questions. C) Jesus pulls out a gun and “empties the clip.” Jesus chooses A, and one of his disciples asks, “Lord, why didn’t you just blow this motherf***er away?” And Jesus turns to him and says, “Thomas, what do you think I am, a Southern Republican?”

More to the point? I suppose that a lot of Democrats and Progressives will try to find the more peaceful way of ending something that is complicated.

Looks like this ignorant piece of shlt emptied a clip into a squirrel and then draped it over the top of his head.

The second family, that father [the Republican] has a gun but takes only one shot. The third family, and that father [the southerner] also has a gun, but he empties the clip. He solves the problem.”

What is wrong with these people in the South? Beason is certainly advocating violence against immigrants. This quote above would be hard to “unexplain” in a court of law, especially the line about southerner who “empties the clip.” This is a threat with deadly consequences.

In the south low information rednecks can no longer hang black people as a form of recreation, so to take the place of lynching, I suppose they will feel justified in a new recreation: shooting anyone that looks like an immigrant. Too bad Beason can’t be prosecuted for “jokingly” making this statement that leaves me shaking my head.

The problem in the south seems to be an empty intellectual clip and inability to hit the broad side of a barn when electing public officials . It’s rather scary when you stop and think this is the mentality and quality of individual southerners consistently choose to represent them in public office . It would seem to me the problem is this guy obviously represents the attitudes of his constituents . The real problem is the empty chamber between the ears of the people that keep voting these clowns into office .

Will someone please inform the GOP that illegal aliens don’t vote. It is hard enough for us citizens to use our voting rights with the GOP chicanery machine.

Rethugs are always crying and pointing.

Also, ask the GOP why they did NOTHING during all those years they were in control. Ronald Reagan let them in for cheap slave labor, and $hrub went along, because he needed to keep up his drug trade.

This is the reality of political discourse in our country today. It’s unfortunate that there’s an entire party that subscribes to a thrid-grade mentality — it leaves fewer of us to lead America towards a better future. Time and time again, the heavy lifting falls onto the capable shoulders of progressive Americans. If there’s any cosmic justice, these people will be judged by the same God which they claim to behold.

Illegal immigrants are scabs and leftys like myself have always opposed scabs.

I don’t like his analogy but i agree with the goal of deporting illegals. We also need to jail the people that employ them. Left wing labor organizer Cesar Chavez held protest march’s against illegal immigrant labor. Left wing talk show host Thom Hartmann has spoken out against illegal immigrant labor. Illegal immigrants have the most negative effect on poor working americans because those are the people whose jobs they take. The americans at the bottom are being hurt the most.

If you claim to have compassion for illegals then your compassion is very selective since illegals are hurting the poorest americans the most.

  • RichWa

I don’t know if what he said frightens me more or the fact he sees nothing wrong in what he says? Perhaps he should tell the joke this way:

MONOPOLISTIC CORPORATE GREED is “hurting the poorest Americans the most”; not the immigrant guys/gals working two to three “minimum wage” paying jobs, while living in a commune of a dozen or more who couldn’t pay the rent without the contributions of their fellow minimum wage earners.

Why don’t you just admit that YOU would never work ONE “minimum wage” job let alone two or three, while living a cramped communal life with absolutely no privacy or personal space. Imagine yourself working your butt off doing multiple menial jobs with minimal sleep in that environment.

The people who have to work extremely hard just to survive have a much different perspective than the people who somehow imagine that an American working ONE minimum wage job can survive financially in America today.

Could you afford the life you have today if you were making only $8.25 per hour? Would you be able to pay your mortgage, your rent, own a car, buy gas, buy auto insurance, buy health insurance, buy clothes for you kids, eat at Red Lobster or vacation at Disneyland?

This is kind of funny…(primarily white conservative) businessmen consistently hire and pay “illegals” under the table to avoid paying Americans better wages and benefits, while simultaneously ratcheting up anti-immigrant fear and rhetoric to garner the votes of the same Americans they stiffed for work. How efficient.

That joke was HI-larious. I have a funny joke, too. A family visits the big city with his family. The Democratic family gets mugged and they turn over their money. Then they go home no worse for wear and a story on how shitty the big city is. The Republican family gets mugged and the father pulls out a gun. But since he a craven Republican he is so scared that he shoots himself in his foot. The mugger gets the money and the gun. The Father goes to the hospital and his insurance declines the claim because they do not cover self-inflicted wounds. The Republican complains to his republican elected officials but he is told to pull himself up by his bootstraps and loses his house and declares bankruptcy. He cannot work anymore so he must live on government handouts and his Republican friends won’t talk to him anymore because he “mooching off the Government”. The southerner family get mugged and the father pulls out a semi-automatic, empties the clip, kills the mugger and then steals the muggers money. He gets caught, goes on trial for killing the mugger and is found guilty. He is sentenced to 30 years in jail. He appeals the conviction on the grounds that he is a sovereign citizens and that the laws of an illegal government does not apply to him.
His appeal is turned down and he serves out his thirty years in jail. His wife divorces him and remarries to the fathers friend from work, who adopts the kids.

    Problem solved!!!
    HIII- larious!!!

What is selective about calling out the casual use of violent language in our society? In context, his “joke” makes the point that republicans and specifically southerners prefer to solve problems by shooting people who are “the problem”. Is it possible to approach a problem without “attacking” it? Why choose the words “empty the clip” when talking about illegal immigrants? It’s a question of maturity when grown men can’t talk about legitimate problems in our society without using war analogies and violent imagery to make their points. I’m sure he represents his district well and the freedom loving, God fearing people he represents didn’t bat an eye and can’t wait to “lock and load” the big guns in preparation for the war against illegal immigration and the evil liberals who hate America.

May I just correct one thing? By raid you mean they broke into the wrong house because they thought it was a drug dealers house and they wanted to steal the DD money. Then they killed the father, the 9 year old and wounded the mother. Most likely because they didn’t want to leave witesses, but that is just conjecture on my part. But hey, Shawna Forde and group were patriots keeping us safe from “those type of people”. The laws of the “true patriots” are different from “those type of people”.

What I like best about this is how RIDICULOUS his analogy is. So the person who “solved the problem” is the one who grossly over reacted, probably shot a few people in the vicinity because of stray bullets and lack of thinking something through, and probably just saw a shiny object in the hands of minority thinking he was about to get stabbed by an illegal immigrant. Really, it was just an Italian guy with a pastry knife in his hand. He shot BUDDY the cake maker!!!

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

Yeah…the usual standard ‘gun-related imagery’ to fluff up an otherwise soulless turd and make him look like a hero. The most boring trick in the GOP lingo handbook. It’s the intellectual equivalent of the dumb guy who buys a huge truck with no muffler and squeals the tires every time he takes off. All thunder and no lightning.

And the Latino vote used to carry elections for Republicans in several key states…including FL…until it became popular to just dump all over them 24/7. They don’t vote Democratic on auto pilot…they’re largely culturally patriarchal, religious, pro-life, anti-gay rights etc etc…perfect republicans…but they will vote Democrat because it beats voting for the right wing dipshit who said that they should all be detained at random and deported on any excuse available.

I’m no fan of a porous border…but I refuse to be any part of the asshat brigade and its thinly veiled Nazi race purity fantasies. Good immigration policy will have a better path to legal entry…stripping the ‘coyotes’ of their role in human smuggling, while keeping the door open to documented workers, students and residence seekers.

  • VJBinCT

We need a ‘Smith and Wesson Line’ to replace the Mason Dixon Line, where no weapons are allowed up North without adequate screening, safeguards, and registrations. In the South, gun ownership would be required and voting would be at gunpoint. Those bringing illegal guns up north would be shipped to Mexico to serve as gardeners 25 years to life.

  • Anonymous

Only a southern republican would use that vernacular. If the headline was” Politician says empty the clip”, I would have bet my house on him being a republican and a southerner. When is the south going to evolve and catch up with the rest of us. And what the heck is that on his head?

  • dlindem

What an unfortunate choice of words and analogies. No wonder the repubs are in the toilet!

Some southern Republicans (not all) are idiots.

    I’ll vouch for that.

Im sorry but there is nothing to “take of of context” with the words “emptying the clip” ….he knows and we know exactly what he meant. He is just pandering to the freaking 1% of “Americans” who are idiots, oh yah and the “tea” party.

  • Anonymous

That would be fine with me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mdetrano Marc DeTrano

I thought “yeah, ok, maybe this was taken out of context”…until I read the analogy. This guy has violence on the mind. Furthermore… his conclusion of the analogy is all wrong!! The Democrat who sees the attacker as a person, and looks for rehabilitative solutions to help not only him, but others along the way, is the one solving the damn problem. The southerner and the Republican only eliminated a symptom that will come back again tomorrow. Hey, thanks for clearing up your thought process for us Senator.

  • http://twitter.com/Covert4Liberty Brimstone Hill

Hey asshat, Just because someone is a southerner does not make them ignorant or violent.

You’d best be content with higher illegal immigrant numbers; Rand Paul is pushing for a $500 billion federal cut this year, including $23 billion to DHS. Bye bye half of Border Patrol and CBP.

  • Anonymous

Naw, mindboggeling is right. So, if you are not stupid, and you’re not a Rethug, you better move.

  • Peter Baisley

Nah. We elect them vice-president. Just ask Dick Cheney. He outed a CIA agent and ended up getting re-elected.

  • Anonymous

Beason on Monday told the media the comment was taken out of context, and he did not mean to suggest violence against illegal immigrants. “No way was I urging anyone to do harm to Hispanics or illegal immigrants,” Beason told the Birmigham News. “I would never do that.”

^^ Bull f-ing shit. His mugger analogy proves that statement false. He is equating illegal immigrants with being muggers, and saying that the bible belt will solve this “problem” by putting bullet holes in them. Might I add that he’s implying the south is easier to manipulate into performing violent acts because of their loose gun laws and high ignorant, uneducated population… I also have to point out his false portrayal of Democrats when put in a high stress situation like “mugging.” Everyone I know- Dems, Independents, Republicans all included- wouldn’t stand there and take being “mugged;” no we’d kick their ass and send them to jail. So thank you Senator for a gross misrepresentation of what “pussies” liberals are. But since this dude is basically using mugger as a synonym for illegal immigrant, I can see where he’s going. He’s turning liberals, who are pro civil liberty (aka giving illegal immigrants opportunity to enroll in schools, etc.) into wussies throwing their hands up , giving in to anything. While republicans and their southern counterparts take the reigns and are tough in “solving problems.” Disgusting.

“Democrats do not want to solve the illegal immigration problem because they know, this is a fact, that when more illegal immigrants move into an area, when their children grow up and get the chance to vote, they vote for Democrats,” he said.

^^ NOT A FACT! It is a well known FACT that Latinos are divided 50/50 for both parties. Only in the 2008 and 2010 elections did Latinos vote mostly democrat because of the GOP stance on illegal immigration. It’s also a FACT that Dems are trying to solve this “problem” by making it easier to make a living in the U.S. when it is a well known FACT that illegals are heavily exploited by Corporate America. They make OUR clothes, handle OUR food all for little to no money in extremely dangerous conditions for extremely long shifts and no worker’s comp… not to mention Corporate America KNOWS this and LOVES that they can get away with enslavement while lobbying in Washington to get people to hate the Latinos for “taking your jobs” when they take jobs clearly NO AMERICAN would ever take! all while outsourcing more jobs to 3rd world countries and China… Oh and let’s not forget to mention the FACT that Corporate America has a deal with law enforcement about this “problem” whereby they stage raids every week to send a certain percentage of illegals back to Mexico when Corporate America knows the very next day many more will come to take their place!

  • overdoneputaforkinit

Over reaction is how angry people with sadistic tendencies who also lack empathy can express themselves. They seek employment which gives them the authority to contact people with physical force. They can do a lot of harm using violence to the limit of the official rules of their employment, while carefully staying within official policy.

  • overdoneputaforkinit

I say let’s target Sen. Scott Beason when he comes up for re-election, and do what ever is necessary to make sure he isn’t re-elected and even empty the clip to make sure he isn’t elected again. Of course I mean that metaphorically.

  • Anonymous

Obviously, Mindboggeling, that thing on his head is his asshat. Why do they think that being bald is going to cost them votes? Or maybe he’s just trying to keep his brain warm. It probably doesn’t get good circulation. Just suggestin’ . . .

Not only have the Republicans controlled the Alabama legislature, etc., keep in mind that the GOP also had the White House for eight years, along with a majority in Congress for 12 of the past 14 years.

What exactly have THEY done relating to illegal immigration in that timespan?

    Nothing.

  • Anonymous

Something I woulod love to ask Mr. Beason to explain, considering his slam of the Democrats:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement will deport approximately 400,000 illegal aliens in fiscal year 2009, up 10% from 2008 and 25% from 2007 – the last two years of the Bush Administration. The majority of the illegal aliens deported are criminal offenders who were identified through ICE’s Secure Communities program.

  • Anonymous

Mr. Beason, under Obama deportations are up and so are prosecution of employers of illegal immigrants (something that was non-existant under Bush). The republican party however wants to end prosecution of employers and concentrate on deportation of the employess so the employers can renew their slave workforce every couple of years. By the by illegal immigrants are usually very religious and therefore very conservative they would vote rtepublican if they could vote.

In this season of “Reagan was the greatest president ever” I find this right-wing assault on illegal immigration highly amusing. Has the GOP forgotten Reagan’s amnesty program for undocumented foreigners, or do they continue to live with blinders on? I’d really love for someone on the other side to explain this to me….

I know, pro hominem complaints are unworthy of civil discourse, and he certainly has it coming, but that is just about the worst rug I’ve ever seen. And he has to tilt his head forward so it won’t fall off! Oh, and he’s a total jerk. If we see him elected to anything ever again, even in cringe-making Alabama, then his confidence that everyone around him is stupider than he is will have been justified.

I don’t think Southerners are inherently violent or ignorant, that is more a problem of nurture vs. nature. However, based on the esteemed lawmaker’s comments, I am going to assume that Southerners couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn if they need to “empty the clip” to put a bullet on target and solve the problem.

So you tell a “joke” about a southern conservative “emptying his clip” into a criminal undesirable, and then you say we need to empty the clip on illegal immigrants. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT US TO THINK THIS MEANS? What the hell do you think some impressionable brain-dead christian conservative exercising his second amendment rights is going to think???

The take home message here is in this guys desire to be seen as tough and that fact he is anything but that.
He makes a remark with a lot of violent dog whistling in it..thinking he has a sure crowd. He gets called down and rather than take the tough approach and stand up..he tries to walk it all back with tired “taken out of context” bunk.
Bottom line, this guy has never seen tough in his life. He is another soft skinned, cowardly GOP’er trying to look like Rambo. Problem is, Rambo was a fake too.

Yeah, you know those Republicans. Stir up the crazies and then say they had NOTHING to do with violence when it happens. I would much prefer the illegals than the Republicans. At least the illegals TRY and use some common sense. Republicans only seem to use hate and greed.

If a mafia godfather had instructed his crew to “empty a clip” on the opposition across town, and someone did it, that would be enough to get him convicted of murder.

These politicians and media figures know better than ANYONE how crazy their followers are. This kind of talk goes beyond reckless. It’s ordering a “hit job”.

What ever. The only US President ever to grant blanket amnesty to illegal immigrants is Ronald Reagan, a Republican. The Immigration and Reform Control Act in 1986.

Actually, in reality, Reagan gave illegals amnesty. The Immigration and Reform Control Act of 1986. Not Democrats. When a Republican candidate says he’s trying to emulate Reagan, it’s code for “vote for me amigo”.
