Progressive fans of the Huffington Post aren’t too happy about the site being acquired by America On-Line. Now, they may have another reason to lament the purchase.

A source close to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, a former Google executive hired in 2009, told Business Insider that while he “calls himself a libertarian,” Armstrong is in fact “one of the most conservative people around.”

Armstrong’s personal politics were largely unclear due to a lack of public statements. He could not be reached for comment on this story and a message left with AOL’s corporate relations department went unreturned at time of this story’s publication.

Armstrong has also donated to a number of politicians including New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, and according to records available online he also gave to Republican Thomas Herrmann in his 2010 run for Congress in Connecticut. Armstrong’s wife has also donated to Republican causes, Insider added.

Herrmann dropped out of his congressional bid mid-way through the local Republican party’s primary.

The Internet provider, which has been steadily losing subscribers for years, has been trying to re-brand itself as a content provider by launching sites such as the local news site Patch and and the citizen-journalism site Seed. In addition, AOL owns numerous other sites, including Engadget, TechCrunch, Moviefone, MapQuest, Black Voices, PopEater, AOL Music, AOL Latino, AutoBlog, StyleList, and more.

“Our motto right now is ‘great content with great ads,’” Armstrong said on PBS’s NewsHour Monday. “We see the internet needing to have a cleanup of how it looks and feels in the next progression of it. It hasn’t changed much in the last 15 years.”

AOL agreed to purchase The Huffington Post for $315 million, approximately $300 million of which will be paid in cash and $15 million in stock.

An informal survey of 500 Huffington Post commenters conducted by The Daily Beast found that 81 percent opposed the acquisition while only 19 percent expressed some optimism about it.

“We made HuffPost and we are being abandoned,” one commenter wrote. “They will aim for the center. That’s where the big money is.”

Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post’s co-founder and editor-in-chief, has been trying to downplay the importance of partisan politics after the announcement.

“We don’t see ourselves as left,” Huffington told Politico. “And I think it’s one area where news consumers are ahead of the media, because they know that continuing to see everything that’s happening as a right-left issue is missing what’s happening, and is also making it much harder for us to be properly informed.”

AOL has also agreed to create the Huffington Post Media Group, which will put Huffington in charge of all the company’s editorial content.

Huffington said her website will continue after the acquisition “on the same path” it has been for the last six years, although now much faster.

“This is truly a merger of visions and a perfect fit for us,” she added.

Huffington was married to oil millionaire Michael Huffington, a close Republican friend of the Bush family, who represented California in US House of Representatives in the 1990s and unsuccessfully ran for the US Senate in 1994.

The couple divorced in 1997, and in 1998 Michael Huffington revealed that he was bisexual.

Following her divorce, Huffington, who used to campaign for her husband as a staunch religious conservative, switched to liberalism.

She launched The Huffington Post in 2005, shortly after Raw Story began its work, pitching the site as an alternative to conservative news websites like the Drudge Report.

Sounds like we are going to be getting some HuffPost refugees !
I am going to get myself an orange tan and refuse to negotiate until we have border security.

  • Anonymous

Why should this surprise anyone, if Zsa Zsa Huffington isn’t a fucking plant I’ll kiss Dick Cheney’s necked’ nasty old white’azz at noon in Times Square.

  • Anonymous

Never was a fan of Huffington Post to begin with. Who doesnt know Arianna is just a money/power hungry republican disguised as a liberal.

  • Anonymous

Well I made it in before the wall went up. HuffPost is already censoring comments which question the merger.

  • Anonymous

I haven’t trusted Arianna Huffington for a couple of years now. No surprise she’s just another money-grubbing corporate fascist hag & phony. I have despised aol for 15 years and now I’ll chuck HuffPo into the same trash can.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PCHLMPBJKYTW3LJBHZEZMO3TXQ What Ever

I gave up on the Post when they started that silly ass adolescent badges thing. The site has become a superficial supermarket tabloid in any case.

  • Anonymous

The censorship on that site was already out of control. It’ll just get worse.
    For example this site
will automatically be censored – try it.

  • Taleisin

There has been a growing number of complains posted here over the last few week.
I’m glad you made it over. :)

  • Anonymous

Agreed. The badges are/ were a complete joke. What are they ? 12 ?

  • Anonymous

That guy looks like a jerk.
Anyway, all media is controlled. People can call me a raving lunatic or just ‘out of touch with reality’ but the reality is that there are many realities, the government just chooses which reality to showcase. People should not rely on media to tell them the absolute truth of what goes on in the world.

  • mjcc1987

Good for her. HUFPO is her company and she has decided that more money is far more important than the loyal followers that have made her. Money over principles all the time.

Me think’s she gonna get up with flea in a few years

  • mjcc1987

Censoring like crazy and with no rhyme or reason. I think they are going to have a lot of problems in the next year and I suspect Arianna will abandon AOL/HUFFPO within a couple of years, it was be renamed never to be seen again.

  • Guest

Poor (ha, ha) Arianna Huffington. Where will she be holding forth from now? Fox (Rupert Murdoch) News? Who else will give her the time of day? Jesse Ventura nailed her a while back…

What a phony leftist she is.

No surprise. Anyone who believes that Arianna Huffington is a liberal is uninformed. She is an opportunist who made the rounds of talk shows in the 90s trashing Bill Clinton.

  • Anonymous

Anybody who thought that Huffington was a liberal is uninformed. She is simply an opportunist.

  • ThorsteinVeblen2012

Progressives have constantly been gamed by cynical manipulators for profit. MSNBC who used Olbermann for rating and now having dumped him are reigning in the message. Huffington Post who touted themselves as progressives and became increasingly less so until they made this final sell out. John Edwards cynically used a populist theme to woo progressive voters. Barack Obama who was elected on “hope and change” did neither. The Democratic Party is based on this kind of cynical manipulation of populism. There is a well of progressive sentiments in this country that is cynically drawn from when it is to the advantage of likes of Arianna Huffington. Clearly that message is manipulated when needed and subverted before it generates the critical mass to create real change.Where is the antiwar movement today? The wealthy benefactors who promoted “hope and change” have drowned hope in Grover Norquist’s bathtub. All they have done is push the already fattened pigs from the trough so they can get their turn at gluttony.Arianna is now a fixture on the talking heads circuit. She’s cashed in her chips. Just another phony progressive who sold you out.

Huffington :Post started out on the left but slowly and surely the control phreaks managed to gain control and steer them to the right. I quit HP a couple of years ago as I saw them as Repig Lite…

  • NadePaulKuciGravMcKi

Why did HuffPo censor Jesse Ventura’s 9/11 article after publishing it?

  • Anonymous

I tend to be a cynic even before this acquisition of Huff-post by Aol. It is just more of the right controlling the media. I will probably still read the articles, but with a lot more cynicism. I’m disappointed in Arianna for making this deal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rambotheshark Robin Cooper

Uh oh… with the AOL money behind Hufffington Post TMZ might have a rival.

  • ce2756

I also dropped HuffPo. After being censored for the ‘crime’ of posting well reasoned and civilly worded comments, I figured they were trying to become some kind of propaganda machine to pacify the progressives. I deleted my history and account with them after giving the ‘editors’ a clear explanation why.
Oh well, I guess it’s just another example of how flexible Arianna’s standards are when there’s money on the table.

  • Anonymous

I voted my feelings about the AOL merger by dropping my account on Huffing ton Post. There are other alternatives to read.

Yes, everybody is doing better now that they read Raw Story headlines and then set their keyboards afire going “Plutocrat here, Plutocrat there, here a Plutocrat, there a Plutocrat E

    EVERYWHERE a Plutocrat!!!”

    You’re all very very wise.

Well, Arianna was a rightist before she became a leftist.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BJLAKC34S4NQH35LUADJYJRV4I Glenda

Arrianna Huffington is a total phoney. She was a leftist in Greece, came to America, met a Republican who ran for office, married him (he was ultra rich) and had two kids with him. Found out he was bi-sexual (he’s gay) and divorced him and got a huge settlement. She was hard right ranting like all other RWNJ’s and even “toured” with Newt Gingrich. She’s no different now. She’s about the money, not about the policy nor the idealogy. She’s been everything under the sun – puts her index finger in the air and figures out which way the wind is blowing and hits the Go button. That’s not flexibility, that’s indecision or opportunism at its worst or best, depending on which one she is at the moment.
She has a “radio program” with Mary Matalin. Who can listen to those two screeching slags talk about anything whatsoever? Can’t get past the voices, let alone either’s phoniness to even listen to their “message”.
I always say bought and sold is bought and sold and Huff-Ho should know.

  • Anonymous

Hey everyone, Oldsmobile’s going to buy out Yugo! Buy stock now!
Hilarious but sad. Huffpo’s been driving readers away for years with its celebrity tongue-washings, censorship, and enthusiastic support of sleazy pols and their sleazy politics. AOL is about as vital as Betamax. Investors should flee in panic.

  • Anonymous

It appears the reich wing is working undercover to destroy the progressive news in this country. Starting with MSNBC and now this. They are cunning aren’t they? They are taking over and will destroy what little progressive media we have left. But on that bright note I am happy at Current hiring Keith and they are not a public company.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3NVQSZZC5IM66JEOCSFJUV7FCE Jacques G

Well, as I’ve said- sellout. So now instead of calling it “Huff-Po”, we can call it Huff-Ho. Just another rag to sell out neo-CON propaganda. AOL- going the way of 8-track.

  • David R Velasquez

Either Armstrong is betraying the rightwing or he is set to betray Arianna.
Either way, it means he’s someone not to be trusted.

  • David R Velasquez

Certainly you can sift your own sense of the useful from what the rightwing AND the liberals have to offer.

  • David R Velasquez

I guess probably why I’ve never trusted liberals (as opposed to those who declare their beliefs unequivocally) In the age of mergers and media consolidation we’ve just witnessed that Arianna and the Huffpo have a pricetag.

  • mjcc1987

    lol, huff-ho

I wonder if we’ll get a huff-aol cd in mail soon with a trial offer :)

  • Anonymous

I heard about his site from a HP user. It appears to be fun. Hp lost its appeal. Censorship is rampant. It takes forever to get a simple comment posted.

  • mjcc1987

I don’t know what your problem is, but I’ll bet it’s hard to pronounce.

I went cold turkey off Huffpo about 9 months ago and it has been at least 3 whole years having never clicked into Drudge. good riddance. AOL is a killer app alright!!

  • mjcc1987

Well, not only is it hard to pronounce, it’s deeply intertwined with an inadequacy psychosis

  • Richard

well we will soon see what kind of shift occurs in huffpost…….. if it starts to drift to the right…… there will be a lot of progressives/liberals bail…

Nope. She couldn’t sell me out.

Saw her years ago on Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect and immediately recognized her as an ignorant blowhard.

    Never liked her, never will.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

As opposed to Arianna Huffington, who is a milktoast liberal who censors anything about 9/11 or the Kennedy assassination that doesn’t fit her worldview? Not much change there. Maybe this is more of that “change we can believe in” we heard rumors about not so many years ago.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

You mean censoring Jesse Ventura and turning it into a National Inquirer clone wasn’t enough?

  • Hassan i Sabbah

I was going to start a site called something like Sludge, but all the good rhymes have already been taken. It’s quite an industry.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gregory-Martin/100000564476826 Gregory Martin

Comcast takes over MSNBC and suddenly Olberman is gone, AOL takes over HuffPost and the same thing will gradually happen. Our monied overlords will buy up and neuter every left-leaning news/opinion site in order to make their own opinions the prevailing ones. Subvert the paradigm and go underground with a new digital samizdat!

  • otherjerseyguy

    RIP Huffington Post.

This explains why Huffington’s “monitors” have recently clamped down (deleted) on postings that are not Politically Correct. With Keith Olberman going to Current TV and The Raw Story’s journalist approach to the news, progressives will increasingly pass on Arianna and AOL.

  • Guest

Can someone explain to me how this is a good thing?
I am always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt,
but I feel that this deal smacks as a little hypocritical on HP side.

Is anyone really surprised that this guy donated to the GOP?

  • cannotvote

315million for hufpo – reeks of a power purchase, especially in this day and age! It was a cash deal, where did the money really come from, does she lose the use of her name if she pulls out of the company, ‘cos it turns right wing – so many questions, so much doubt and so many other sites more deserving!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6VIII2XPU4HUPLANTLEJGSYN7A jARED

HuffPo always seemed like a bit of a trojan horse as it was. How much porn news can you dump on top of politics before no one takes it seriously? Not much at all. Obvious business is obvious.

  • Anonymous

Why don’t you grow up, boor?!

And why don’t you use English instead of puerile gibberish?

  • Anonymous

If I grew up, then I’d be just like you.

Just like all the other grown-ups.

Filled with their fancy vocabulary and their casual tossing off of French phrases.

    Tossing off, now, bye bye!

  • Anonymous

They are the same as dead to me. Their news has often shown a slant toward simplified stories for the ignorant, and everything Sarah Palin says in covered there. They waste a great deal of space on pablum. Silly pictures of frivolous characters we are expected to care about, always fully clad, even though the headlines pitch them as scantily clad. Their product reminds me of Life magazine. Mostly pictures, not so much facts.

  • Anonymous

    Irrational. Illogical.

    “Fancy vocabulary”? “Puerile”? It’s about 9th or 10th grade-level, I’d guess.

“Casual tossing off of French phrases”? It’s called having an education. You should try it.

Checked with a friend’s teen son. He says “puerile” is a perfect description. Not even he would write such a pathetic statement.

By the way, if his translation is accurate: Leave me out of your homo-erotic fantasies.

First, I definitely prefer women. Second, if I preferred men, that would still disqualify you, little boy.

Oh, and I seriously doubt you have a sack, seeing as you obviously have nothing for it to hold.

Not surprised you’d be prone to using the word “tossing.” So appropriate for a tosser like you.

I’ve never known anyone willing to announce such an intention publicly.

  • Guest

I’m not going back to that website anymore, I think. I’ve had enough of right-wing media. Sounds like this is what Huffington Post is rapidly becoming.

  • Anonymous

Huffington was always about Huffington…The “…Post” did not matter too much. It was a means to an end!

  • Anonymous

I can tell you this… if you dare say anything that even smacks of the “truth” regarding 9/11 you get banned from their site for life. If you believe as I do that 9/11 was planned and perpetrated by Israel and the US Government, and was a false flag operation, you will never be able to post there. Almost “any” conspiracy is banned.

She knows who butters her pancakes:

Are you moving back to Huffyville, arianna?

  • aquarius2

For months the Huffington Post has published articles critical of Obama and his administration. I wondered about that but the most telling thing about this sale is the comment section. The comments are highly moderated and have a high percentage of right wind crazy. It has been a rather slow but continuous swing to either the middle or right wing slant. It is going to get worse. Another voice which will be denied for the left.

  • Anonymous

Huffington is a life long conservative going all the way back to her school days and her writing for The National Review. She fools some uninformed people into thinking she might be a little liberal because at times she sounds like Ron Paul’s love child.

  • CaptainHowdy

This is only meaningful to those idiots that are still brainwashed enough to believe that there is any substantive difference between the two organized crime syndicates that are pillaging this country.

Roy Sekoff was on Sgt Schultz last night. After assuring the Sarge that HuffPo would still be a progressive bastion, Sekoff went off on this long spiel about HuffPo reaching new audiences with AOL’s resources, and really are issues like the the deficit a right or left issue?

I saved it on the DVR. If you run the footage in slow mo, you can see the exact point where the Sarge’s heart breaks, as Sekoff explains HuffPo’s sellout in a roundabout way.

  • Anonymous

It’s called selling out to the man (establishment).

  • Anonymous

WTF?! AOL is still in business? Really? What do they do?

The Huffington Post refused to post a critical comment (though not hateful) that I made about the article Mark Penn wrote after the last election. I promptly deleted my account and only visit the site for the occasional bit of infotainment. They have succeeded in creating “FOX Left” to lull liberals into feeling like they are not alone: you know, “FOX for smart people”. Problem is that they further the divide and conquer tactics favored by the oligarchs to keeps the PEOPLE from pulling together and directing their collective anger and action towards THEM. Fox news has been so successful at fooling their audience that they no longer even try conceal their tactics. Could it be that the HuffPost feels the same way?

  • Anonymous

huffington Post was the classic bait and switch. It started out with good, incisive content. It was birthed in the throes of Iraq/Afghan war pangs.
Look at it now. The comment section is a joke. Naked celebrity pictures dominate the eye-field.
It became just another rag. Total sell-out.

I guess, in the end, one really is who you sleep with,,,. Maybe that is why she is in a hurry to make a buck while trying to placate those who really helped make her famous. She says “thanks”, but prefers money. And, sells it out to one of her “buddies”. Very contemptable.

In the past couple of years, HuffPo has moved towards just being Politico with T&A. The PopCulture crap had begun to creep seriously outside of the righthand column. And the *never* ending coverage of the Wasilla hillbilly was making me puke.

As soon as the AOL buyout hit the news I deleted bookmarks and iPad app.

Kids! They have no sense of privacy – not even their own.

That’ll be my name for him from now on: Tosser. (He’ll probably have to look it up.) He’ll deny it, possibly try to eradicate it – though he was too stupid to edit out the lie he told about protesting at the capitol (where McGovern and others were arrested). He’s not very bright.
