UPDATE: Keith Olbermann announced Tuesday late morning on Twitter that he has accepted a job as Chief News Officer of Current Media, the parent company of Current TV.

Original story unfolds below…

WASHINGTON – Liberal former MSNBC star Keith Olbermann is reportedly taking his talents to Current TV, the channel led by former Vice President Al Gore and businessman Joel Hyatt.

The New York Times scooped in a story published Monday night that people “familiar with his plans pointed to a possible deal with the public affairs channel Current TV.”

Olbermann’s spokespersons and Current TV executives declined to comment to the Times but didn’t deny that a deal was pending. One source told the paper that Olbermann would have equity stake in Current TV.

Olbermann’s public relations firm said in a press release he would make the announcement regarding his next move on Tuesday in a private news conference.

The former top-rated MSNBC anchor shocked his fans by abruptly announcing his departure three Fridays ago, although it was later revealed that Olbermann had long been battling with MSNBC executives by that time.

But don’t expect to see Olbermann launch a show right away — his exit contract reportedly included a clause banning him appearing on television for at least six months.

A cable channel that went on the air in August 2005, Current TV is known primarily for its public affairs broadcasting and hosting some television series. Its ratings have been far lower than MSNBC’s.

News reporters at CurrentTV.com proffered no knowledge of the move Monday, also expecting the announcement Tuesday.

He has always been a refreshing change from the same old and tired pundits on regular corporate TeeVee. You know, the same old dolts like George Will and William the Bloddy Kristol and the whole lot of them.
Good news he was able to dodge his no compete contract and get back to work! Bravo!
And on Current he will be able to really cut loose compared to MSNBC.

  • Anonymous

Love that song, and the rest of that album!

  • ladygeek

Actually, I was thinking that he might go to liberal radio since that wouldn’t violate his non-complete clause. Most of the time, these things aren’t legal but if they wanted to force it, they’d have to keep paying him to fulfill their part of the bargain. Working in high tech, everyone has to sign these things – even me – but they couldn’t enforce that contract clause unless they paid me for the year that I couldn’t work for a competitor.

I’m not a lawyer, I don’t want to be a lawyer because I was married to one and I’m still barfing after 25 years.

HA! What did I say?! Was I right or what?

Great move for Keith. He is smart, talented, visionary, perspicacious, pugnacious, pointed,
He is the “Man for all Seasons” Godd luck Keith. I will miss you on MSNBC. I have always enjoyed your incisive wit and extra -sensory brains. Onward and Forward, Mon Ami!

When I first heard that Al Gore was launching a liberal TV channel I was hoping we would get a liberal Fox news. Instead we got a left-leaning political MTV-ish channel that appeals to – Well I’m not really sure who it appeals to. I’ve tried to watch it, but rarely find anything compelling enough to warrant going back for more.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this signals a move in the direction of converting Current into a real liberal news channel to compete with MSNBC . If Keith could bring along a few other commentators and perhaps they can begin doing some actual news, this could have a lot of potential. We’ll see.

  • Anonymous

    What did you say previously?

  • Anonymous

This is awesome. He gets to build up this channel into hopefully a true Progressive News outlet. Since Comcast bought MSNBC you have to wonder if they will squelch the voices.

  • Ignatzfattis

Three months ago when Keith was suspended I posted that he should move over to Current TV, and two weeks ago, when he quit I posted-and I know I am quoting myself here, which is pretty cheesy, but I would say it again:”Last time this happened I thought it would be really interesting for them to make a spot for him over at Current TV -Al Gore’s company. I know it’s not a news channel, but an hour of news commentary and some Thurber would round things out I think. At least he could say what he wants there, and it very well could boost it’s viewership by quite a bit -who knows, maybe Rachel and the rest will follow and we can stop watching the GE channel. I’d flip over there for Olbermann, but I gotta watch Rachel wherever she is.”

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    I recall that. Good call.

“I’m not a lawyer, I don’t want to be a lawyer because I was married to one and I’m still barfing after 25 years.”

LOL Come on, tell us where the body is buried.

Current has had some excellent cultural programs that show what’s going on all around the world. They do need some more programming, though; they repeat too many shows.

I’ve never seen them get political, like Olbermann was on his show, and I don’t think he would fit in on that channel. Maybe he’ll get off his high horse and start doing shows on regular people instead of politicians. If he gets good at it, maybe he could become like Bill Moyers, showing how politicians decisions affect people.

  • Anonymous

you don’t need to wonder, they already have… they fired him immediately b/c his contract ran out and to send a message to the others…

  • Anonymous

No one knows that for sure. I heard that Zucker had his back and once Zucker left, Olbermann was out. Surely it could have been Comcast but I don’t think anyone knows for sure.

And I watched Kieth a day late on my computer — I live in the middle of Russia and am ahead of the states by quite a few hours.
My only plea is that this new station also broadcast on the web! Please!!!!!!!!

“A cable channel that went on the air in August 2005, Current TV is known primarily for its public affairs broadcasting and hosting some television series. Its ratings have been far lower than MSNBC’s.”

The old media is no longer relevant and is on its way out.

  • Taleisin

‘…the channel led by former Vice President Al Gore and businessman Joel Hyatt.’
What? Des he lead it like a political party or does he co-own it? Your language is a bit odd.

I guess its time to ask all of the cable companies to start adding CURRENT TV? Right now, mine does not offer Current TV.

  • enorceht

maybe taking that exec job will give him a chance to set up new program formats … stealing some unhappy liberal news/commentators … and i’m hoping in six months we’ll see a dr. johnny fever / wkrp moment when they announce the new formats (such as when he gets on the air the first time after the format change, Johnny comes alive, signaling the change with a loud drag on the playing record and literally folding the record album in half.) but it might have to be a cd/dvd

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/QCOLME2YGHQK2YATXQFQ677Q34 Frances T

Current TV has some interesting documentaries not just from the US but around the world. I recentlly saw a story about a skinhead couple that discovered they both had jewish heritage and converted to Judaism. Keith will be an executive, which could me he could shape programming there as well as have his own show.

  • Anonymous

Their website is great. I always check it every day. Far as the TV station they don’t show any news that I know of. They used to have a show that would show with Laura Ling and Euna Lee where they would travel the world and report on different cultures. That was pretty good until they were detained in North Korea.

They went to Iran where I found out Iran is leading country in nose jobs.

All the women get them. They have some beautiful women in Iran.

I can guarantee that their ratings will go up. I am so happy for Keith and I truly thank Al Gore for his wisdom in this choice.

Yahoo! Cant wait for Keith to hit the airwaves again, and speak truth to power! I am so excited as Keith, Rachel, Ed, an Lawrence were the only ones on corporate owned television who delivered us the real news. I am sure all the stuff knew about, but prevented from speaking on MSNBC, will loosen his lips again on Current TV. Now we have to find out which corporate network actually delivers Current TV?

  • ladygeek

He’s on his 6th wife – i think that’s punishment enough for him. You’d think he’d stop being in CA, a community property state.

  • tsuki

Current TV needs to live stream to TV like Al Jazeera English does.

  • ladygeek

I think that’s great. I haven’t really watched Current but I might start now.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, this should help Current TV get lots of new viewers. Where Keith goes, the left will follow! Let’s hope that the Worse of the Worst gets expanded to a full hour! That would make for great news.

  • ladygeek

MSNBC might turn to the right anyway with this stupid merger. That net neutrality went the way of the dinosaur. How long til the tin foil hats drop from the sky?

Good luck to KO! This is a very interesting development.

They have to go up. Can their ratings get any lower? This will hopefully be the straw that broke the camel’s back that is CurrentTV.

As good as Olbermann was when attacking Bush, he has been equally as bad covering up for Obama’s Bushite policies. I suppose this news department will churn out anti-2nd amendment, pro-Global Warming Alarmist, and pro-Global Carbon Tax reports regularly as it obsessively covers for all Democrats and never holds any of them accountable for anything. His total viewership was actually quite low even on MSNBC so I do not think this will move the meter greatly.

He could be a great force for good if he would lay off the inane rage-filled attacks on Ron Paul and would actually question Obama’s policies from time to time.

  • HelenRainier

Odd – I heard KO criticize BO many, many times. You couldn’t have been watching over the past two years.

  • HelenRainier

    AMEN!

  • Anonymous

He has questioned Obama’s policies several times….You must not have watched much.

  • WitsEnd66

Current TV at the very least is free from corporate control.  Real patriots pray
more for more free press to sustain democracy, not less.  Guess that tells me
    where you stand.

This would be a huge grab for Current TV… If Olbermann really does have a stake it will be interesting to see if he can turn Current TV into a cable powerhouse.

I’ll be discussing Olbermann’s big move on my talk shows, TPN following and Watercooler on http://www.thepulsenetwork.com at 9 AM EST and 12 EST LIVE, or anytime on-demand.

Although Keith Olberman carried less water for the current right of center Democratic Leadership, for the most part, the rest of them including Rachel Maddow and especially Ed Schultz, ultimately fall in line.

I remember it too. I admire your intuitive sense. However, I haven’t watched a single minute of MSNBC since Keith left. Nor has anyone else in my house. Sorry Rachel! As far as I am concerned she lost my attendance when she hung Keith out to dry. I understand why she did it and why she felt she had to do it, but still she did it. I have always had mixed emotions about her anyway, even when I listened to her on Air America, I would sometimes turn her off. It’s not so much her topics as her delivery. And she is just a little bit too military oriented for me. She really likes the Armed Forces.

I like her sometimes but she can wear on me, too. Especially, the repeating, explaining everything three or four different ways, and the occasional over-the-top level of goofiness that she evokes. Once she even had to come back the next day and apologize because the story was presented in a such a goofy manner that few understood what she was trying to say. I would watch her again if she moved to Current TV but as far as curtailing my MSNBC boycott to watch her–nah!!! Give me Amy Goodman over Rachel Maddow any day of the week!

MSNBC was no bigger then CurrentTV when he took the job there.

  • Anonymous

BS try watching his show, hell go look at some of his special comments, like after Obama sold out and gave the rich more money they do not need. Olbermann and Maddow alone in the first 6 months of Obama’s presidency were more critical of Obama then Fox was in the 8 years of the Bush administration. You would know this if you watched his show at all, which is why I know your pulling this crap out of your butt, because if you did watch you would not have to be told this fact. Go back to Fox they will make you feel all better as they lie to you and you vote against your own best intrest and that of your children and grand children.

I love the description of Keith in this article…

Barack Obomba was criticized for being a liberal by the GOP.

Barack Obomba was heavily criticized for his policies by Keith Olbermann.

Keith Olbermann is labeled a liberal by this article.

Amazing how lazy lapdogs in the Four Stooge Media and their minions just can’t exist without being able to flail the old archaic brickbats of “liberal and conservative” around. I really don’t think that they can communicate at any level without utilizing those terms. These words have lost all such meaning from their original intent that they have now mutated into verification codes for some paranoid members of the tribes. Move on…There’s now independent, corporate and progressive. Get out of the Dark Ages.

  • Elim

Current TV is included in DirecTV’s basic package, lucky me.

One of the conditions of his employment had better not have been to promote global warming from time to time. Anyway, I can hardly wait to see if he makes a success of Current’s news division, or if he wrecks it.

  • Anonymous

What an idiot take on Olberman. Either your ignorant or you are trying to act like someone stupid. Why would you care about making a comment with such a lame response. Olberman’s got balls, brains, and reveals the truth about the corporate suck asses in our government.. unlike the disinformation crews on FOX news channels that are traitorous lackeys for the the corporate right that are trying to control people.

  • Elim

He’s got brains alright. But his balls are coming from somewhere I don’t understand. His behavior is why he had to leave MSNBC.

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/why_olbermann_gone_baby_gone_gXqDdby2BSYdd4hvQ2OlNL/1

He has no friends or allies because he burns everyone that comes near him. He’s got to keep everyone at arms’ length just to be able to work with them, so if he can do the same thing for Current that he did for MSNBC under those conditions, great! I’ll be watching. If not, it will be interesting to watch how this one builds up, then unravels.

  • Elim

I remember. How did you know?

  • Elim

What did Rachel do that was wrong? She was either kept in the dark by Keith, or she was asked not to say anything. Keith wasn’t fired. He left because MSNBC had changed too much for his liking.

  • http://twitter.com/DrMatthew Dr. Matt

It’s amazing how lazy lapdogs use obtuse monikers for our President Obama.

  • ladygeek

I haven’t read much over there or watched. But it is a “relatively” new channel so this might very well be a “start-up” organization. Sometimes it takes a while to get things tuned and running smoothly. I’ve worked in start-up ops but I’d say 3 out of 4 organizations went broke (one got sued and lost and the company went up in smoke). But, since he really did build up MSNBC, he should know most of the in’s & out’s and build this one. I still watch MSNBC but I think it was foolish to fire him. This is going to end up being a whopper of a business failure.
