WASHINGTON – Freshman Rep. Allen West (R-FL), who won his House seat partly by bashing the stimulus and government spending, this week hailed stimulus-funded projects for creating jobs and boosting economic growth.

“It’s time for incumbent Ron Klein to admit his ideas just don’t work. The stimulus failed to produce jobs,” West said in a campaign ad last fall.

But in a recent interview with attorney Ed Pozzuoli, the video of which was clipped by Think Progress, West praised two stimulus-funded projects in his Florida district for their potential to “turn around” the economy.

“Just had a great opportunity sitting over and talking to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport director. They’re going to bring in that new southern runway,” West said. “You think about the jobs that will create. You think about the increased revenues. I mean, $2.7 billion a year. That’s what that airport brings in. And when you bring it in together with the world’s largest cruise port? Now we’re talking about how we’re going to turn around South Florida.”

The Ft. Lauderdale Airport received $5.6 million in stimulus funding, and the Port Everglades seaport, which West also referred to, was granted $190,000.

West, who has been hailed by some conservatives as a rising star in the GOP, announced Wednesday that he will give the keynote speech in the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington this week.

West’s contradiction reflects the rhetoric-reality gap among voters with regard to government spending: they love to rail against it broadly, but they appreciate it when the money is spent in ways that benefit them.

Republicans roundly criticized the Obama administration’s economic stimulus package as a failure in the run-up to the 2010 midterm elections, a position that appeared odd after it was revealed that many of the anti-stimulus GOP lawmakers praised stimulus-funded local projects in their districts.

It’s bad enough that all reslugliCONs are predictable hypocrites. It”s worse that so many ignorant dumbasses keep voting for them, and blaming the resulting problems on Democrats.

  • Guest

WELL SAID! Although the Democrats are FAR from blameless.

  • Guest

    No surprises here….

It sure didn’t take him very long to demonstrate that he’s a lying hypocrite.

Rep. West was against it before he was for it.

    Hypocrite or just stupid?

West is a rising star in the gop? Well, I guess comparatively speaking he might be as their standards are pretty low.

I don’t understand why we the people can’t do something about Thomas remaning on the high court with a wife who is so pig headed…..There has to be some laws that helpgovern the High courts. If there isn;t then we had better get some. No One is Supreme in this world.

The dumb shit didn’t think he’d get caught with his blatant hypocrisy? Almost as dumb as the other repub house freshman who got caught trying to date some girl on craigs list and turned in the most likely quickest resignation from congress ever.

You have electricity and Internet access and a computer and the money to afford them all and the free time to type in your comment, perhaps it IS working for you.

What Republican/Tea Partier isn’t a hypocrite. Incentives to get the economy moving are ‘bad,’ unless it benefits them. Homosexual sex is ‘bad,’ unless they feel the need to have it. Lying and distorting one’s record in office is ‘bad,’ unless they’re in a tight race and a bit of negative campaigning is all that’s needed to turn things around (in their eyes, at any rate).

Racism is ‘bad,’ unless that aforementioned Republican or Tea Bagger is on a local school board, and is suddenly in a position to undue a busing program that has actually been proven to be successful.

Republicans and Tea Partiers are convinced that America has moved into the new age of Color-blindness, and all people are created equal.

Just make sure to tell the African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, immigrants, women, or poor about this, because they may not have gotten the memo yet.

I think that before a Bagger takes an “Oath of Office” they need to take econ 101.

  • http://www.rawstory.com/ Stumptownhero

The label “Rising Star” in the GOP means that one is “telegenic” NOT intelligent. See also Michele Bachmann, Sara Palin and Paul Ryan.

Only the Blue dogs like Blanche Lincoln are this hypocritical!

  • Dolmance

Then again you could call them a bunch of lying hysterics too.

  • DesertSun59

Look, it’s pretty clear by now that whenever a Republican opens their mouth, this is what spills out:

    1. Whatever it is they are dissing the loudest is what they’re doing.
    2. Absolute lies.

Either way, they’re not worth listening to.

  • Anonymous

    Can’t it be both?

  • Anonymous

How can you tell a Republican is lying? He/she is running for office.

  • Anonymous

Republicans are required to take the hypocritic oath when they are sworn in.

  • Anonymous

They probably think econ 101 is how to make cookies to dip in their tea.

When I saw that story on The Final Word I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair.

I’m hoping for a video that comes out catching them in a three way.

Now this is what I call a two-faced Republican asshole. His asshole, the thing he talks out of, is on his neck, his real face is in the back side of his underwear.

    Disgusting politician. Period.

National high speed electric rail with commuter spurs. We produce the steel and aluminum. We build the cars and upgrade and add terminals. Creates manufacturing and construction jobs. Creates service and maintenance jobs after construction. Provides alternative to air and automobile travel. Use hydrogen and natural gas busses for short haul. Build thorium proton reactors for additional electric power. Automobiles and the interstate highway system are inherently energy inefficient and wasteful. National mass transit is the most reasonable path forward. Offering the best balance between the competing forces of ecology and energy supply.

    Listen, reason, respond.
Do as you would have done.
    First do no harm.
    Love one another.

    oooooooooo! Nice!

How many times did I read before the last election that this guy should run for president? More times than I can count but he really should switch parties to the Dem side. I’m shocked, shocked to see the number of posters who are so quick to blame Republicans for all the world’s ills. It’s not just Republicans, IMO, look what the present administration has done to sink this nation into bankruptcy. A pox on both their houses, Dems and Reps alike. One group is no better than the other as far as the taxpayer is concerned. They are there primarily to line their own pockets. Did you ever see a poor DC politician? No and you never will.

One of the chief complaints about the “stimulus” was that it was a huge package of pork projects used to pay off political allies of the Democrats, and that it wasn’t targeted correctly. It sounds like this project, improving theport and airport in order to expand economic activity in the area, is what the stimuls shold have been doing. I’m not getting behind Congressman West, because I think he’s being politically expedient, but this is the type of project that the stimulus, IF YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE ONE ANYWAY, should have funded. Not turtle tunnels and bike paths.

  • Anonymous

Without the stimulus we would be buried in a depression right now. The recession began in December of 2007, something 99% of Americans evidently do not know. And the constant whining about the stimulus, or better yet, the bank bailout (which was signed by Bush, not Obama), via the teabaggers and other conservatives is nothing but disingenuous political drivel.
I’d also like to know where these people were during the eight years Bush held the White House or the six years while the GOP held the majority.

  • Anonymous

Another Politician that spouts out one thing and then changes their wording after elected.
Stimulus-funded projects did NOT create an Long Lasting Jobs in the USA. We got a few temporary jobs out of stimulus-funded projects that gave people FALSE Hope.

Racists. You’re all racists. West is black.
