Comedian Bill Maher took on Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck in an appearance Tuesday night on MSNBC’s “The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell.”

The host of HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” said O’Reilly’s interview with President Barack Obama before the Superbowl was “astounding” and disrespectful, and forced Obama to swallow a great deal of “guff.”

The Fox host interrupted the president 42 times in the 15-minute interview, as O’Donnell recently revealed on his show.

“I just feel like the most difficult part of his job must be to squelch the rage that somewhere must be inside and say, I’m the president of the United States. You don’t talk to me like this. I’m not some left — I’m not Al Sharpton, you know. I won this job,” Maher said.

“And Bill O’Reilly, who claims he’s such a patriot, how unpatriotic to treat a president that way. How does that look to other countries when you’re interrupting and belittling.”

Maher also called Fox host Glenn Beck “a bad joke” whose primary objective is to stay on the air, surmising that as the reason for his conspiracy theories and “apocalyptic politics.”

“He’s got a little bit of a messiah complex,” the HBO host said. “So I don’t think he cares how he stays on top.”

Maher also responded to criticisms from “The View” host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who accused him of expressing “ignorance and hate” in a joke he made about her during his Friday show.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” Maher said, laughing. “First of all, it’s a joke. And not even that bad a one… There is a line that can be crossed where you get into mean, bitter, chauvinistic — I didn’t even approach it.”

“Let’s just say I wouldn’t put [Hasselbeck] on the intelligence committee,” he said.

Fox News security should be visiting Maher soon. He should be veeeerrry scared.

I am very grateful for the existence of Bill Maher in our cultural discourse.

  • http://twitter.com/RavenWytch RavenWytch

That interview was atrocious. And Bill’s right, it was unpatriotic. Bill’s been making calls on his show for the left to reclaim patriotism, and I’m completely on-board with that. The GOP has had a stranglehold on what they think it means to be patriotic and it’s time we take that back for the rest of us.

After Maher’s embarrassing appearance on ABC’s This Week, he has quite a bit of gall to criticize another pundit’s intelligence. I’m a progressive, and I don’t know or care anything about The View or Hasselbeck, but Maher ain’t no rocket scientist.

How odd that Maher doesn’t view himself as unpatriotic for the things he said about George Bush. Oh, wait, Maher believes in the double standard. A journalist should not allow the person being interviewed to dodge questions. O’Reilly should have been even tougher, especially in the face of Obama’s big lie that he did not raise taxes. So all those healthcare taxes are an illusion? And the increased taxes on tobacco are just imaginary.

  • Anonymous

There would be a double standard IF Maher had ever interviewed Bush (under the guise of a news channel) and had disrespectfully interrupted him 42 times. Dingbat!

  • Anonymous

It’s not about intelligence only, it’s about ignorance, and willful ignorance at that. Can’t we even tell the difference any more? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see reason, to be logical, to be humane, respectful and to be properly informed. If the average person only took the time to understand that most of the media has a vested interest in keeping us dumb.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. I like his viewpoints, but he is not very smart on issues. What makes his show great are the guests. On occasion he will have some mental midget entertainer on, but in general always good discussion. And New Rules is usually outstanding. He is not a rocket scientist, but he is quite a bit smarter than Elizabeth Hasselback. Just like she is a lot smarter than Rosie O’Donnell.

Bill Maher is what he says he is. A comedian and entertainer. He does those quite well, and with the HBO forum he can go into areas restricted by commercial TV. Real Time is a great show.

  • Phil E. Drifter

I think Maher is wrong for mentioning anything about any host of the View. None of them are politicians, and as deluded as any of them are, they are entitled to their own opinions.

When one starts flinging poo like a monkey, one automatically loses the argument.

I’m having less and less respect for Maher as time goes on, even though I was incredibly impressed with “Religulous.”

  • Anonymous

Actually, Maher’s comments were about intelligence, weren’t they? And on This Week he was far from properly informed.

  • Anonymous

One moment, there — there is a huge difference in criticizing the POTUS in commentary, and showing deference to the POTUS ***in person***. Maher was not saying it was unpatriotic or unacceptable to criticize Mr. Obama (at least in this interview) — he was criticizing Bill O’s behavior to his face, which WAS patronizing and dismissive. O’Donnell went on to show that not ONE thought of Mr. Obama’s went uninterrupted, in fact he had been interrupted an average of once every 19 seconds! I hope that Middle America recognized the arrogance (surely his conservative base never will, and will in fact applaude Mr. Obama’s come-uppance by their alleged middle-of-the-road hero).

  • Anonymous

He was referencing the interview. If an MSNBC host treated Bush as such, they would be calling for them to be tried for treason.

I have no problem with Maher’s attitude as a commentator. And whenever Maher interviews someone, he is always respectful. As a commentator he is not, nor are most commentators from Left and Right. But you have to be respectful. Chris Wallace and Shep Smith of FOX are respectful. O’Reilly is a disrespectful punk. Mr. Kinky Loofah Sponge sex talk is a bully. A married man acting as such is not “respectful”. The only reason Mr. Morals did not catch more hell for that was because the lady got paid HUGE bucks to keep quiet. Total hypocrite. And one thing for sure, O’Reilly is clearly not too bright. Coupled with being a disrespectful bully, it explains his popularity on FOX.

  • Anonymous

Point taken. I thought Maher was an odd pick for a Sunday morning talking heads show, and after his appearance I wondered why he didn’t have the sense to decline the invitation to appear. I despise George Will, but he had Maher for brunch that day.

lol Bill Maher is concerned that O’Reilly didn’t treat Obama with respect? How did Maher & the media treat President Bush? He was treated like shit by the press. Hypocrite.

  • http://www.rawstory.com/ Stumptownhero

What makes Maher funny are his WRITERS! Without them he would just be another NYC comedian bitching about politics.!

  • PrissyPatriot®

I used to think Bill was too much of a chauvinist-having Coulter and other bimbos on his show. Turns out he really isn’t and he gets better with age.

  • Anonymous

Yes, but he also does a lot of his writing. And the material still has to be delivered. Stewart, Colbert, Leno, Letterman, etc., all comedians have writers.

Some people just know how to tell a joke well. Like some actors can make a script good, and some can ruin it.

  • Anonymous

I did not catch that one. I hardly ever agree with George Will, but he is a lot smarter than Bill Maher, yes.

Maher refuse to appear on TV?…….I think he loves the attention.

Yep. A lot of us in Minnesota came to that conclusion after seeing what happened to Sen. Wellstone. And Michael Connell, the IT man who was about to testify regarding the alleged vote rigging in the 2004 Ohio election. Shows what the Bushs and the political elites are capable of. You can only hope one of them gets into a Toyota that has that sudden acceleration problem.

Dimitri Sokolov,What ‘media’ are you referring to? Bush was given nothing but softball questions. He was never called out on his crimes-not once-except by Maher-and for that, he lost his job.

He does tout himself as a “comedian.”

    Hey! Look!
It’s one of the e-democrats attacking his fellow e-republican again!
Although one would have thought the REAL issue for people who MIGHT be closer to Maher’s politics is WHY Obama would even appear on Bill O’Reilly and the much bigger question that Obama’s FREQUENT appearances on questionable media entertainment programs has ALREADY diminished Obama’s respectability and by way the Office of the Presidency?

I mean Obama’s REASON for appearing was to raise his personal profile as a Democrat with a mainly Republican TV audience — not to do ‘Prez’ stuff.

Maher is just plain wrong — it’s perfectly acceptable to make good TV and Obama can’t simply move in and out of his celebrity persona to FOOL people to support his Presidency based on nothing more THAN his celebrity and charisma. Maher is the first guy to tell anyone that places like Fox are the last places where ‘issues’ with Presidential support.are discussed in a proper public forum.

If Maher was honest and consistent, his wrath would be for Obama NOT DOING HIS JOB — instead of OReilly doing his…..

  • http://www.theaccidentalteacher.net Accidental Teacher

Come on guys. What did you expect?? O’Reilly acted like O’Reilly – a pompous self-righteous ass, playing to his base. You didn’t really expect otherwise?? The best thing about the pre-Super Bowl interview was that it exposed O’Reilly to a wider audience. And while he may be a hero to his right-wing Fox News audience, his boorish behavior didn’t go over so well to the broader audience of more typical Americans. The scary thing to me: O’Reilly compared to Beck and Hannity, is considered one of the more reasonable (read as: but still a crazy motherfucker) Fox voices. And while during interview I wished emotionally, Obama had gone after the mean-spirited schmuck, I must admit in retrospect, Obama by taking the high road made O’Reilly look even worse.

Bush was a piece of shit who practically destroyed the country; he failed on 9/11, he lied us into two wars, he wiped his ass with the Consittution, and he was never even legitimately elected in the first place. Bush should long ago have been given a blindfold and a bullet, so fuck off with your bullshit false equivelancies between GWB and Obama. Fucking knuckledraggers…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KYXM5QF7OHZNHXRRS7JX26NRQY Jamie Kelley

You two fools – boudin and MrComments – should try pulling your heads out of each other’s asses. Bill Maher is undoubtedly intelligent and Elizabeth Hasselbeck – or anyone as small-minded and ignorant as she is – is not. Maher can hold his own in any forum, and if you’ve bothered to keep tabs on George Will’s track record as it relates to the bullshit he spews on This Week, you’d be kissing his ass a lot less. He’s an imbecile.

Nah. I won’t go away just because some mentally challenged slob wishes it. You mean those two wars that Obama is continuing? How about the second biggest attack on U.S. soil under Obama, when the nutcase Islamist psychiatrist in the military offed 32 people, despite the fact that he had been spewing Islamic extremism for years? Not legitimately elected? I guess you missed the part where the press did a recount and came up with Bush winning, even if you have contempt for the U.S. Supreme Court. I am afraid you are the primitive in this debate. One day, you may learn to spell “Constitution.” Thereafter, maybe you will learn what is in it.

She’s the wife of a pro-football player.. she’s on the View because they needed another pretty face to balance out the old curmudgeons on the show and the last pretty face they had was “too liberal” and spoke her mind too much.. so they got a pretty, yet vacuous, blond conservative up there to keep stirring the pot.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

Ah, how uncritically thinking some people are.

Maher hasn’t interviewed a President. Maher DOES interview people on his show, and he DOES let them finish their statements, and he DOES take them to task when they dodge a question.. O’Really, on the other hand, steps all over the people he’s interviewing and intentionally cuts people off when he realizes the lie he’s telling is about to be destroyed by the person he’s interviewing.

“A journalist should not allow the person being interviewed to dodge questions. ” … and yet, O’Really is not a Journalist, he’s a partisan hack talking head.

  • Anonymous

I said Stewart and Colbert had writers. They do. What the hell is your point? Stewart is of one of 14 writers for his show. Colbert is one of 18. Letterman and Leno have writers too (for their monologues). And ALL of them do their own writing and improvising as well. Letterman making jokes during interviews is spontaneous humor, it is usually not written. The monologues are.

When did I imply they were the same “caliber”? Stewart and Colbert are superior to Leno and Letterman. But they all have writers. My point was that almost every comedian has “writers” for their monologues and bits. How does an accurate statement translate into me not knowing what I am talking about? And note I said “almost every”, so don’t bring up someone who writes their own monologues and say I “don’t know anything about it”.

George Will is an a-hole, but he is smarter on issues than Bill Maher and would make Maher look foolish in a debate not because he is “right”, but because he knows more about things. Will has an MA and PhD from Princeton. He taught at Harvard and has edited Journals. I think his political views are absurd, but he is smart. Jon Stewart has the savvy and intellect to out-debate George Will, but Bill Maher does not. There have been many times Maher had a guest make a point I disagreed with and could have easily countered, but he got Maher flustered and he had no response. As a viewer I get frustrated with seeing that happen. I think his show is great and he is smart, but he is not THAT smart on issues, and he will be the first one to tell you that.

So tell me, what did I “spout off” about that you take issue with, because my statements are all accurate.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

Maher never interviewed Bush.. so you’re comparing apples to oranges to suggest there’s no worm in your apple? .. by the way, Maher also criticizes Obama, he just doesn’t disrespect him to his face during interviews. In fact, Maher has many interviews with people on his show, and treats them all with infinitely more respect than O’Really treated the President.

    idiot.

How is it lowering yourself to do an interview for one of the main talking heads on one of the major networks? He said he wanted to reach across the isle – that wasn’t just to Republicans in Washington, it’s to Republicans across America as well. He wants to work with them too. And they watch Fox News.

He’s given them the info straight from the presidents mouth, rather than letting Fox pick statements from other speeches, and take them out of context, or pausing the tape to talk shit on the president.

Real Dolt – He’s the president and whether you like Fox or not (I personally do not), if he’s going to represent himself as being even-handed and open-minded to other people’s views, he has to endure meeting and being interviewed by people with whom he might disagree.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dorothy-Banks/100001470098554 Dorothy Banks

The media and pundits set the tone to disrespect Barack Obama when he was a presidential candidate. They treated him like he was a joke, as they did with Al Sharpton, Republican Alan Keys and Jesse Jackson. Prior to them was Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who ran for president in 1972. They were all black candidates.

When Obama was elected president, critics, the media and pundits turned up their disrespect volume. They accused the president of wearing “mommie jeans” when he threw out the ball the world series. They said he threw ball like a woman. The media and pundits got angry because they could not make the president go over the deep end, showing them that he was just another “angry black man.” Of course they could then say he is too emotional to hold such a high office. Critic Maher has done of put-downs and name calling of President Obama.

The media, critics and pundits have said, and still say, the president does not understand what it takes to be president. He doesn’t have that fire in his belly. Daily Show host Stewart called him “dude” in an interview. Critics, pundits on TV and radio seldom address Obama as President Obama. Whatever he says, critics and pundits feel that they– none of which have been elected to a political office–can say it a better way. Rachel Maddow rewrote his first State of the Union address to say what she wanted to hear. She read it on her MSNBC show.

I don’t have the space to cover all the incidents of disrespect and names the president has been called. O’Reilly was following the lead of critics, the media and pundits during his interview with President Obama. Remembering an interview that he conducted with Bush, I went to YouTube to find the 11/11/2010 interview, ready to count the times he interrupted Bush.

Of course OReilly made himself a part of the interview, and regularly voiced his opinion. He allowed Bush to complete responses without interruption. I had pencil and paper ready to write them down. The few that I counted were not forceful, and hardly classified as interruptions. He flattered Bush, and disagreed with him a couple of times. O’Reilly was not the same with President Obama. He was extremely rude, and egotistical enough to solicit compliments from the president. He belittled himself instead of President Obama.

When he asked the president about the media and people hating him, I also remembered him asking Bush a similar question: “How you feel about the media hating you?” He did not say “the media and people.” Clearly O’Reilly had an agenda with his planned “gotcha” interview. If he intended to catch President Obama off guard, saying something that would catapult O’Reilly into the media eye for a day or two, he failed the task.

Intellectually, President Obama is 10 cuts above his critics, fellow politicians, the media and pundits who have told the world that you don’t have to respect this black president. He does not represent “us.” He is a foreigner, a Muslim. If he says anything about your country or leaders that you don’t like, demand that he apologize. That’s what we do in America.

    Feel Better?
So why did the US President want to talk to a “a chauvinistic, pretentious lying ASSHOLE”?
Why did the Democratic President give the network, which you quite rightly criticize BTW, furnish them with all that credibility, ratings and advertising cash when he clearly knows they are not a supporter of him or his agenda?
Seems to me Obama might be working at cross purposes, no? Hyping the very media outlets that ultimately works to cost him credibility, support, respect and works to undermine every political initiative he has try to promote?
    But ya….I’m retarded!!???!!

No, Maher can’t hold his own. Jon Stewart can, Maher can’t. I can think of countless times when Maher was stumped on his show by things that I could easily have refuted. He misses a lot. That’s just a fact by watching him. He reads something off a card, and if someone disputes it he rarely is able to follow up. Stewart can, he is smarter and does more research. Maher does not do all the research and has been embarrassed many times before. I hate seeing that because I like him and find his show great, but it happens. Just this week he let that Egyptian lady walk all over him. She never even answered his question. She accused him of “FOX Newsing” her by asking for an answer to the question. She continued to interrupt him and not answer the question. At that point HE should have told HER that she was “FOX Newsing” him.

A good example is his absurd reaction to the 9/11 Truth hecklers. Yes, his common sense and instinct accurately tell him they are “out to lunch”, but if he had to actually debate them he would probably lose (which explains the hostile reaction, insecurity). And I’d be sitting at home knowing how to counter those clowns, while he would be having a very difficult time because he probably does not know all the facts.

You said Maher was intelligent and Elizabeth Hasselback was not. I said Maher was a “quite a bit” smarter than her, so what was your point in making that statement? I agreed with you.

And Will does have an MA and PhD in politics from Princeton. His viewpoints are depraved, but he is smart. He has written some nice books (“Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball) was excellent. But specifically show me where I was “kissing George Will’s butt”. I don’t see that in anything I wrote above.

I think you’re confused. He said he would not extend bush tax cuts and did anyway. You have to raise taxes now. Our tax brackets are too low and skewed to favor the top 2%, hence one big reason why this economy is in shambles. Increased taxes on Tobacco were voted on in the house and senate and passed. Increase on healthcare PREMIUMS have nothing to do with the president and everything to do with Insurance Companies. They’ve actually progressively (or regressively, depending on how you look at it) gutted medicare. Less than 5% of your taxes go in to medicare. Not a big deal. However, a huge percentage of your taxes go to the Military Industrial Complex. Think about that.

I think more REAL journalists should have been more tough on Bush on his BIG FAT LIES about Iraq and Afghanistan; Guantanamo Bay; increasing Government more than ANY president has ever done; violating the Constitution by pushing through the Patriot Act then pissing all over the document by saying “it’s just a piece of paper.” Not to mention the fact that oil monger deregulated the industry 500 fold among other industries like mining, agriculture, the banks, etc. He FUCKED us over big time, handing us over to a giant Corpocracy, and for some reason you people have quickly forgotten that!

boudin (ace commenter), says Maher himself shouldn’t be criticizing Hasselbeck because he himself was “wrong” on a news show about seven months ago; he said that Brazil was turning to suragcane/ethanol production to wean themselves off of oil.

    He was fact, correct:

By 2008 consumption of ethanol fuel by the Brazilian fleet of light vehicles, as pure ethanol and in gasohol, is replacing gasoline at the rate of about 27,000 cubic meters per day, and by February 2008 the combined consumption of anhydrous and hydrated ethanol fuel surpassed 50% of the fuel that would be needed to run the light vehicle fleet on pure gasoline alone. This is another example of Obama reaching out his hand across the aisle in friendship to the republicans and they come back and slap him in the face. Maher is right, but Obama opted to do the interview. He still doesn’t get that they don’t care about him. They want him to fail even if it means the country will fail. They just don’t like having a black man in the white house who will make any of the dumbass republican president look bad. STOP WORKING WITH THE FREAKS! They are never going to like you! Or work with you! Stop bending over for them!!!!!!!!

Who the f*ck cares what Bill Maher says about anything?!?! As far as O’Reilly goes and the president goes, why don’t people look at it this way: We didn’t elect a KING! This man needs to answer to the country. Show the office respect? Sure. But does that mean ask the guy a question and let him drone on and on for 10 minutes saying whatever he wants without interjecting? Absolutely not.

Look, if someone can’t handle actually having to answer questions without filibustering, they shouldn’t be in the office. O’Reilly interviewed Obama before, so he knew what he was getting into. And Obama handled himself fine. So what, exactly, was the problem?

You’d think people would appreciate actually getting answers beyond the political-speak that so characterizes what we hear nowadays. But to Bill Maher, that’s unpatriotic. Go away, Maher. No one cares.

The president certainly “answers to the country,” but what does that have to do with him also trying to cross the aisle and have a reasonable and civilized conversation with someone who obviously denigrates him at every turn.

Are you saying that, because president Obama is president, he (or anyone for that matter) should be interupted 42 times during an interview?

O’Reilly, and not president Obama, was trying to fillibuster, as always, and I think the presidet handled it in a fair and intellectul manner.

I never touched on WHY Obama was there so your point is irrelevant. But if you want my opinion on WHY he was on Fox Noise; it’s probably because he’s still pandering to the right. He has since he stepped in to office and won’t stop giving in to their greedy, psychotic wants and “needs.” Obama isn’t the first president to do these appearances by the way. Clinton started them pretty much…

And if you want my 2 cents, I really don’t think Obama is doing himself any good by going on Faux Network because those people watching will NEVER hear the truth! Just like you.

Bill M needs to calm down. First, Bill O kissed his ass hard at the beginning and the end of the interview. Secondly, it’s better that he didn’t just toss softballs at Obama. He needs to answer some questions posed by a differing view. I for one like to see how he responds.

  • Anonymous

No, it’s actually showing the country that you have the guts and intellect to stand up to those who spend every waking hour denigrating the office of president.

Read Pinhead and Patriots and you will gain insight into O’reilly’s interview style. Had Mr Maher read and educated himself, he’d have had a better answer. There is a difference between interrupting and keeping someone on point. Obama tends to get preachy and drag on conversations and speeches. He should be kept on his toes. People make it too easy for him. Sheesh, act like someone threw a shoe at him or something…

“But does that mean ask the guy a question and let him drone on and on for 10 minutes saying whatever he wants without interjecting? Absolutely not.”

and that’s your perception of how O’Liely conducts interviews? politely keeping people on topic in a timely fashion? .. cause to sane people used to having real dialogs and listening to people’s real thoughts, I’ve come to understand that you can’t listen if you’re interrupting.. you’ll make presumptions without facts .. the only reason to do that is because you don’t actually want anyone to hear what’s being offered.

“This man needs to answer to the country. Show the office respect? ”

And the country will never get an answer when the person being asked is never allowed to finish a thought. And it isn’t just respect to the Office, it’s simple common courtesy and decency and how adults have discussions. … but, I don’t suspect many right-wingers have ever actually had an intellectual discussion or honest debate in their lives. In fact, I’ve only met one self-described “conservative” that I DID have a very nice conversation with, in a bar, over drinks with a random stranger.. and it turned out that he and I agreed on most topics with only two differences (the core ideological differences of what it means to be left/right).. he thought business could probably better direct the economy (in absolute terms) and didn’t think welfare was a good idea (I almost had him switch teams over the ‘minimum unemployment rates to maximize profits and how that’s fine if you don’t let people suffer for it’, but he had to leave for an appointment). No yelling, no name calling, no vitriol, and we both let the other fully explain their ideas.. because, how can you refute a position an individual has if you never let them tell you THEIR opinion?

By pretending that trampling someone’s comment is dandy, by twisting it to “drone on for 10 minutes”, you’re showing that you don’t really want an honest debate, honest discussion, honest exchange of ideas. Your distortion and obfuscation makes your dishonest intent clear.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

Another dishonest person.. “answering questions” can only be done if you’re allowed to speak. If you constantly cut someone off, you are intentionally blocking answers.. that’s not seeking an honest conversation, that’s trying to assert your own opinion over someone else.

And if you want to see examples of “softball questions”, go back and look at any of the scripted interviews of Bush.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

“keeping on point” by talking over someone usually means you’re trying to frame the conversation and/or direct it to a dishonest place. Most things in life are not simple, black and white, and require showing the pieces around the puzzle bit you’re holding.. but reference, reality, the bigger picture, those things shatter most right-wing positions.. which is why they avoid it like the plague. Nice little 30 second sound bite quips for the short attention span public. Life doesn’t fit into a 30 second sound bite, though.

Here’s how Bush handled himself with O’Reilly:

Starting with the economy, O’Reilly hammered away at Pres. Bush (in language, not tone). “How did you not see this coming?” he said, and several times jumping in to say “you’re wrong, you’re wrong.”

But when O’Reilly pressed Bush to answer questions about the current policies that are extensions of his past policies, Bush relented. “Ask him, I’m the retired guy,” he said. “You’re trying to drag me into the current affairs, and I don’t want to be drug in to the current affairs.” (In other words…I was asleep at the switch.)

But what you started and what you were involved with didn’t end when you left. It continues. So the people, when they get an opportunity to hear you and read your book, they want to know about the current state of affairs.

Bush ‘s response: “(I’m here)…for this brief moment, to talk with my friend, in order to sell books.”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OCRR6QNKHSZDWSROQ74M46DNG4 Jacques

That is interesting especially when the same can be said when talking to someone on the left. I’m still trying to find a liberal who will answer the question “Why aren’t $3 gallon gas prices under Obama a big deal when they were under Bush” without hearing “OMG BUSH WAS AN IDIOT…OMG WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION…OMG IRAQ WAR”. To which I always say “Ok, but, back to my question about gas prices?” “OMG BUSH WAS SUUUUUUUCH and IDIOT”

And Joe, Really, I spend a great deal of time reading and researching things on my own, which most don’t do. I listen to Glen Beck, and I listen to NPR. Then i go and read and educate myself to form my own opinions.

Listening to Obama speak sometimes is irritating. Because I can guarantee you that asking him a question about the gas prices would yield a 45 minute response where 92% of it would have nothing to do with gas prices and the other 8% would have to do with who knows what.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OCRR6QNKHSZDWSROQ74M46DNG4 Jacques

In debate, one gives the opportunity to retort and respond…this was NOT a debate. It was a question and answer session. This 15 minutes could have turned into a 2 hour conversation. And let me tell you, coming from someone who is naturally verbose, Obama can go on for days.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LXN3MEDAJMUGTQQHH5JFLP7EYU Zog The Obvious

You probably don’t get the angry reaction about gas prices under Obama from Liberals because the high gas prices did not originate here, they originated under Bush because of his policies (OMG IRAQ WAR, among others).

Could Obama do better? Yes. Does he take criticism from the Left about his performance? Yes.

    Try again.

Those engineers, architects and physicists who work with this technology every day and are highly skeptical of the idea that planes brought down the WTC buildings are routinely laughed off as being “crazy wackos” (Bill’s words). Bill, in his infinite wisdom, who has absolutely no education or qualification in engineering/physics, believes that his sheer sense of reason trumps the collective education and experience of all those professionals. There was not anywhere in my post that I stated that Bush was a good guy or that he didn’t totally contribute to this mess. I DIDN’T ask for my taxes to be cut and I didn’t ask for rich peoples to be cut either. In fact, I have repeatly said and will restate here for you – I am happy to pay more taxes so that people can have health insurance, jobs and some peace. I would also like the end of wars – which when Bush supported then I protested…and now will protest them under Obama. What makes them okay under the current President. Where are the Peace marches with him in office…GONE that is where – cause we have to be okay with what Obama is doing. Well WRONG is WRONG and he is WRONG. I voted for him, I contributed money to his campaign and sadly I believed what he said when he was running. Now I see it was all a lie and I WILL not be quite just because he is a Dem.

OH so the $1.20 Cent gas increase from when Obama took office means that this continues to be Bush’s fault?

P.S. Note that many of the things Bush did – Obama continues….how do you justify that…how is that okay. It is NOT and don’t give me the BS that the war in Iraq is over – it is not…just ramped down for now. Did you notice Guantanamo is STILL OPEN FOR BUSINESS. You guys jump on me – but you don’t think about who you are really angry at.

Ouch ohh wow a little angry are we? The Dems have been in power in Congress for quite a while and you remember Mr. Clinton don’t you – he was a Dem…so stop blaming the Republicans….they are ALL THE SAME – don’t you get that. They are both whores to the Corporations – dancing for the dollar bills. So when you talk about being a willing slave to the corporation – take a good look in the mirror sir…a good long look.

  • Anonymous

Are you speaking to me Daltonll? Of course the recession is Bush’s fault…much of what is wrong was started by Bush and was BAD, is BAD. I protested it then LOUDLY and I marched for PEACE. I can not now stand and watch the evil continue. Obama must stand up and the dems in Congress must stand up and stop the evil…the evil. If they will not then I will protest as I always protest evil when I see it.

O’Reilly is a classless douchebag sent by Faux to continue its project of tearing down this president… by whatever means necessary.

Of course O’Reilly was going to show Obama unvarnished disrespect… while, in stark contrast, his whole network basically lip-loved both Bush and Cheney and that whole criminal administration on air — and still do — and then hired a lot of them after they left office, thereby creating a shadow opposition-government-in-exile with a gigantic media megaphone. Easily the most blatantly and unapologetically seditious thing ever done in all of American history.

First of all, Jon Stewart is not immune to it either. He destroyed Betsy McCaughey in an interview, but he missed a huge reply to an idiotic comment she made. It happens. But not much to Stewart.

Recently when trying to compare what the US does on energy to other countries, Maher said that Brazil had “got off oil in the last 30 years”. He said that on Real Time AND to George Will in another forum. Sorry, but that was just a dumb thing to say. It’s not true. Not even close. Brazil is the #7 consumer of oil in the world. Meanwhile Brazil HAS made tremendous strides in reducing consumption through hydroelectric (Itaipu Falls, etc.) and sugar ethanol. He could have made that point, but instead he told a flat out lie and lost credibility. Additionally, how can he not now that Brazil just discovered on the the biggest oil fields in the World, and also has other newly discovered fields. They are developing them and will be using the oil. This was a very basic thing he got completely wrong, and I was sitting at home wanting to say “Bill, put a lid on it, you are looking foolish”. Now he might have meant to say off “imported oil” (they are energy independent), but that still is a horrible comparison to the US. We have very little oil, Brazil has an enormous quantity of it. If Brazil did not have all that oil, they would still be importing lots of oil.

He also once said “Do you know we have pipes carrying natural gas in this country that are made of wood, I’m not joking”. I almost spit my coffee out on that one.

Christopher Hitchens had Maher speechless when Hitchens said Saddam was working with Al Zarqaiw and Al Qaeda to kill Kurdish leaders. Unfortunately HBO has pulled that and many other clips from youtube, so it is not easy to access examples. Saddam was enemies with Al Qaeda. The CIA spent two years analyzing links between them. They found zero. Maher should know this and should have shoved that in Hitchens face.

Andrew Breibart (flaming a-hole) challenged Maher to name something at a Tea Party event that was offensive. Maher could not come up with something.

Here is Maher when he said (7:13 mark) that the media is not pro Israel, and that Israel is about to be destroyed by rockets from the Gaza. I could not believe what I was hearing
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lt2AtJzfxs&feature=related

I do know that Steven Moore has said some idiotic things that Maher could have destroyed Moore on but missed the opportunity. I can’t find the clips.

I also know Maher keep repeating that the tax cuts to the wealthy only affect those making over $200,000. That is not true. They only effect “taxable income” over $200,000. Big difference. Plus he gives the impression that if you make over $200k your taxes go from 36% to 39.6%. Again, not true. It is “taxable Income” first of all. Second, your tax only increases on the income over $200k. He gives the impression that the 39.6% applies to all of your income.

Tell you what, I will save the link to this comment watch this weeks show. I will post a comment as soon as I hear something I think Maher missed. It’s easier than trying to find clips..

And again I am in no way trashing Bill Maher and saying he is stupid. He is smart, but not extremely smart. And in fairness, when on live TV it can be difficult to have good recall.

As a white male I believe the main issue is his background and race. Let’s face it we are still in a racially divided nation. President Obama represents a drastic change to the status quo of white males in powerful positions. I really feel the backlash coming from the “tea party” and other groups are because of his race. I’m not sure people realize what a drastic change to go from over 200 years of white male presidents to an african-american president. This really brought out the wackos!

The main difference was that Bush presided over a disaster, his own Presidency. Even most Republicans have no choice but to admit that now, or look like idiots. I never saw Bush get interviewed by a so called “journalist” with as much obvious disdain as O’Reilly. If you did, name it.

  • Anonymous

You are a confused person. Bush Jr had nothing but softball questions and flattery by the interviewers. He even admitted that all he had confront was softball questions.

If there ever was a time where Bush Jr went through what Obama went through in that O’Reilly incident the right wing media and Fox would play that over and over non stop for eternity never letting anyone forget and always lecturing the interviewer.

I believe the high gas prices (really high energy costs) were at issue in the 2007/2008 timeframe was because they helped tank the economy. My feeling is we are headed there again, so give it time. This is the #1 threat to recovery. If you want to assign blame, it belongs to every President and Congress since Nixon. Pretty much each of them recognized and vocalized the problem but proceeded to do nothing, probably because of all the juicy oil money. The oil is drying up as predicted a half century ago and will get progressively more expensive. In the final analysis, it will only matter what a given politician did or did not do to help get us off of oil.

Presenting only statistics regarding the federal income tax when addressing our tax structure is disingenuous at best, outright dishonest, at worst. Many folks pay more in FICA than they do in income taxes.
Effective taxation rates are the only measure of burden, and our rich pay an extraordinarily low effective tax rate of @ 17%, SLIGHTLY higher than the effective tax rate of the poorest Americans @ 16.3%, and less than half the effective tax rate shouldered by working folks at @ 37%.

They ARE crazy wackos. You have no idea what you are talking about. I am a structural engineer with 30 years experience in NYC construction, and I can tell you beyond a doubt that 9/11 Truth is full of it on their “controlled demo, missiles, standowns”, etc. 9/11 Truth has told more lies than Dick Cheney, and that is quite an accomplishment.

Not one demo contractor in the world thinks WTC Towers were a controlled demo. It was logistically impossible. Tope down progressive demo is the OPPOSITE of a controlled demo. I am fed up with people like yourself thinking you are “experts” on construction and demolition just from looking at some idiotic websites that give bogus info.

Remember there are lots of “experts” (lawyers, “educated people”, etc.) who think Obama was born in Kenya and who have analyzed his birth certificate and know “beyond a doubt” that it is a forgery. I know your response will be that these people are either nuts or have a political agenda. Well, I agree…..and that is my point. Same for 9/11 Truth. And many in Truth don’t buy the controlled demo idiocy, they just want a new investigation, which is fine because so do I. But I want an investigation in reality, not some Comic Book theory.

I mean, don;’t you find it odd that the only news commentator that has ever given 9/11 Truth credibility is FOX News? Shouldn’t that tell you something? Even websites like Pacifica, as radical as you can get, don’t buy 9/11 Truth’s fiction tales.

So give it a rest and stop being suckered by a bunch of losers who are grabbing attention. Try actually analyzing what those BS artists are peddling.

Glenn Beck is and always was a complete idiot. This closet homosexual never went to college and never knew anything about World History, American History, World Religions or the US Constitution. People need to wake up to the fact that this fool is just another uneducated charlatan who does not possess a single ounce of journalistic integrity. He is certainly not a conservative. In short, he is just another opinion pusher which is why he blends in so well with the bigots on Fox News Network. This idiot climbed in bed with Satan a very long time ago as lies, half truths, fear and hate are his only products that he has for sale and he is making big money off of impressionable fools who love being told what to think. Glenn Beck is simply a product of mormon cult theology that he mixes with cherry picked parts of Catholicism, New Age Religions and his personal core as a washed up, dry alcoholic. This makes Glenn Beck one very screwed up moron who sold his soul to the lowest common denominator of personal stupidity. Beck consistently demonstrates all the unstable behaviors of a dry alcoholic which include grandiosity, judgmentalism, intolerance, impulsivity, ADD, indecisiveness and blindness to truth. In short, Beck, Limbaugh, O Reilly, Hannity, Palin, O Donnell, Coulter and others like them who think they are conservative are all guilty of perverting truth, history, facts, religion and the US Constitution when they open their big mouths.

This is interesting. What is a pro-corporate neoliberal? I’ve never heard the term before. I’m not asking to be facetious, I’m genuinely interested. It’s insane to think 9/11 was an inside job or allowed to happen to give us a reason to go to war. I’m a 25 year Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician and you’re right MrComment, the kind of operation it would have required to bring down those two towers would have been impossible to pull off covertly. I’ve watched those films and those so-called experts need to get the money back for their degrees.

I’m sure there are regular Fox viewers (just like there are plenty of Huffington Post readers) that believe in 9/11 Truth but I’ve watched Fox quite a bit and never heard anyone on there push the notion. Think about it, that’s like blaming George Bush. Do you think they are going to do that. The only people that are cynical enough to believe such non-sense are people on the extreme fringes of the left and right who believe thousands of their fellow countrymen would stand by and not come out and say something while their government directly or indirectly let thousands die. Islamic fundamentalist want to kill everyone who isn’t, even other Muslims. The evidence is around us every day. Why is that so hard to understand?

I did say Fox “commentator”. I was not plural. I agree that the rest of them rightfully dismiss 9/11 Truth. But their Legal Analyst Andrew Napolitano did say otherwise. Here is the clip. This is just plain irresponsible.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/24/andrew-napolitano-fox-bus_n_788219.html

And on the demo, it’s not just the “covertness” that would have been impossible. To time all those consectuitve floors of explosives would be impossible. Things don’t instalntly fall at free fall. They need to accelerate first. You would need explosions way down ahead, and the timing would be impossible. Additionally, there would not be a need for it anyway as the part that collapsed, the Interior Space (between Perimeter and Core) had no columns whatsoever from grade to roof (“tube in tube” construction). Yes between your Demo expertise and my construction and engineering expertise, it is not hard to figure this out. In fact, not one demo contractor in the world has said WTC Towers were a controlled demo. It is in fact an idiotic notion. But many in 9/11 Truth know they are wrong. But they are so deep into it, they can’t back out. Plus they like the attention and are selling a lot of books…….

And yes, people will rant about how our policies breed a lot of hatred in the world, but then deny that it could possibly cause terrorism. They can’t have it both ways. I know people who met bin Laden on construction project walk-thru’s (he was part of the family biz then) in Saudi Arabia back in the late 70′s and early 980′s. They said even then he just had a disdain for any Westerners.

I see a lot of rambling on a blog. One part says there was too much debris, one says not enough debris. They reference that Please tell me the point they are trying to make. I’ll point out a few things that I think they are trying to address, because frankly it is a lot of babbling:

WTC Towers were 95% “air”. So it should come as no surprise that the debris pile would not be 30 stories tall. And WTC Towers went 6 stories below grade. The part of WTC Towers below grade was well reinforced (unlike above grade floors, below grade floors had columns in interior space), and not part of the progressive collapse.

Regarding toxic debris, there was tone in WTC. Ceiling tiles, burning plastic, the 4″ lightweight concrete slabs (turns easily to dust), insulation, fireproofing, carpet, paint…….. and much of it contained asbestos. What the hell was the point of referencing toxic materials, like that was some kind of “surprise”.

Fires and heat? Some landfill fires have burned for years. And Centralia has been on fire for over 30 years. As to intensity of heat, again, no surprise. 22 Tons of aluminum. When subject to heat it melts, and can cause big time thermitic reactions with common building materials. Pretty basic science.

This clown says it was a “nuke”? Are you effing kidding me? How was it set off? Just on one floor? The whole building had nukes? How exactly did that happen. And were these new nukes that did not contain radiation? That whole theory is is beyond idiotic, and makes 9/11 Truth actually look somewhat sane. I feel like I just wasted about 10 minutes of my life responding to your post.

If you have other questions, just ask. But please don’t send a link of some imbecile ranting about nukes when he has no substance or merit to his claim. A link is fine, but please make your point so I can address it.

His attack on 9/11 Truth and their controlled demo and missile idiocy was warranted. Those theories have zero merit. 9/11 Truth has told more lies than Dick Cheney. They have no credibility whatsoever.

42 times in 15minutes is A LOT, but what does Patriotism have to do with interrupting what you think to be complete crap? Surely it would be unpatriotic to just let t go on. I didn’t watch it so don’t know what he said but still, I’d like to know what “Patriotic” means to Billy boy.
