The purchase of the Huffington Post by AOL left many of the progressive writers and readers that made the site into a powerhouse looking for a new home.

Adbusters magazine set out to unite those disaffected former supporters of Arianna Huffington’s flagship site by suggesting they use social media to promote alternatives.

“Socialite Arianna Huffington built a blog-empire on the backs of thousands of citizen journalists,” a post at Adbusters begins. “She exploited our idealism and let us labor under the illusion that the Huffington Post was different, independent and leftist. Now she’s cashed in and three thousand indie bloggers find themselves working for a megacorp.”

But the Huffington Post is not Arianna’s to sell. It is ours: the lefty writers and readers, environmentalism activists and anti-corporate organizers who flooded the site with 25 million visits a month. So we’re going to take it back.

We’ll stop going to her site. And we’ll stop blogging for her too. Then we’ll give birth to an alternative to AOL’s HuffPo by using the #huffpuff hash tag to tell the world about our favorite counter-culture websites and indie blogs.

“We are the ones who built the Huffington Post. And now we will be the ones who will huff & puff it down,” Adbusters concluded.

A quick search of the social network Twitter indicated that the hashtag #huffpuff was already being used to propose alternatives.

“My favorite @HuffPost alternative is @therealnews. Join the #huffpuff boycott!” Ben Lucyk suggested.

“Following #HuffPuff? Try @therealnews | @truthout | @buzzflash | @factcheckdotorg | @CatoInstitute | @Truthdig | @AlterNet,” James Young tweeted.

Al Giordano, publisher of Narco News, pledged to no longer provide content to the Huffington Post.

“As long as I live and breathe, this online newspaper – Narco News and its pages – will never be sold to a profit-making venture,” he wrote. “Somebody has to set a higher standard around this water cooler called the Internet.”

Arianna Huffington’s new role as editor in chief of AOL sites has also caused some conservative bloggers to take their business elsewhere. Matt Lewis announced Tuesday that he was leaving AOL’s Politics Daily for The Daily Caller.

“As a conservative (albeit, an admittedly iconoclastic one), it is vital that I maintain the freedom to call them like I see them,” he wrote.

An informal survey of 500 Huffington Post commenters conducted by The Daily Beast found that 81 percent opposed the acquisition while only 19 percent expressed some optimism about it.

“We made HuffPost and we are being abandoned,” one commenter wrote. “They will aim for the center. That’s where the big money is.”

Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post’s co-founder and editor-in-chief, had been trying to downplay the importance of partisan politics after the announcement.

“We don’t see ourselves as left,” Huffington told Politico. “And I think it’s one area where news consumers are ahead of the media, because they know that continuing to see everything that’s happening as a right-left issue is missing what’s happening, and is also making it much harder for us to be properly informed.”

Huffpost is nothing but lightweight tabloid journalism designed as a click magnet to generate advertising revenue.

    A colossal waste of time.

Historically speaking, AOL has been extremely right leaning – and if anyone here has ever posted, or tried to post a comment on an article/issue that doesn’t fit in with their ideology there’s about a 99% chance the comment is never approved or quickly voted down. Lately, the Moderators at the Huffington Post have been adopting similar strategies. This marriage will finish-off whatever Liberal/Progressive slant they have left and I am sure it will change gradually – attempting to hook as many of their subscribers into accepting their new strategy/Ideology.

It’s extremely sad, but this is another shining example of where money trumps truth and fairness, and as usual, money is again being used by Corporate America to silence those of us whom continually demand truth and justice.

I wonder if that organization will continue the panic-stricken embargo on 911 and ban people such as former Governor Jesse Ventura from simply asking questions about 911? Cowardice stinks and I have not been to HuffPo since.

I stopped visiting HP long ago. In addition to their inexplicable and seemingly arbitrary censoring of serious comments, HP long ago began publishing way too much fluff and titillation for my taste. Given their obvious drive toward mass entertainment, the AOL acquisition not only makes perfect sense, but seems like the fulfillment of a destiny.

  • Anonymous

Well, it has finally been said. HuffPo was not a Left site. Arianna is bright, but she is not a liberal. She just doesn’t like the present configuration of the Right. HuffPo was extremely censored (you never saw a negative comment about her, or the fact that she never got over Hillary’s defeat and the rise of Barack Obama). This move is who she is, and she gets to do that. But she was never, ever a bastion of liberalism.

I’m disappointed. I shouldn’t be, but I am. I admit that I click on the fluff some of the time and I do find it disappointing that such junk is featured so prominently at her site. I do read the hard news there too though, a lot, and I think it’s well done. I am a little fearful of this move though. I think she’s a progressive. I find that her views consistently put her far to the left of the talking heads on the Sunday shows where she is sometimes invited to make an appearance. I’m hopeful that she’ll change AOL rather than letting it change her but I know my optimism might be overly optimistic. If she does sell out more while at AOL, I will stop going to Huffington Post.

  • Stephen Martin

That kind of stuff creates more hits, traffic, ad revenue, etc. Just ask Matt Drudge. “End of the World” headlines along with links on oil and Oprah. You make a site TOO newsy and people will think it’s boring…(I’m talking the masses). Don’t kill the messenger.

  • Anonymous

Is the CEO of AOL a right wing stealth Tea Party/Republican shill? Does he want to try and save his sick company and weaken the message of those seeking a more just, peaceful and green world? I think so. However, the left needs a few mass audience sites to make a difference in this great debate and battle for the rational minds in this country and the world. If HP crashes and burns, then we might end up with hundreds of small sites just echoing in the ears of their limited audience. Capital rich folks like Gore, Soros and friends should get behind a few sites and help launch them forward. When HP received the $25 million from Oak, the big venture fund, the purpose and future of HP was etched on the deal. The whole game at that point was to cash in. I would not be surprised if Murdock, our greatest threat to humanity and the planet, was behind the scenes of this sick merger.

Huffington Post was never anything BUT sold out. It was born as a sell-out, designed for profit in the great corporate tradition.

  • Anonymous

My homepage was huffpost 5 minutes ago… now it is Raw story.

I hope the word will get out and that all the people who’ve been contributing to Huff Post will stand up Egyptian style and make AOL feel stupid when they see they only bought the web address and not all the contributers or people who click on the site… I hope people can have enough backbone to just not go to the site…I’m telling everyone that I know… But most people in America have shown they don’t really mind being bought or sold.. So, it is doubtful that many will be able to stop clicking as they habitually do… We shall see…

  • Stephen Martin

I have had an adversarial relationship with AOL since it’s inception as an “internet provider” when in fact they were an “internet filter”. When they started, I had Earthlink as my isp and kept it at that even though “everybody” had AOL. This is when “WWW” and all those internet addresses were just too much for people, so AOL could sort it out for you and tell you where to go.

They once had a problem with a story about gay people and didn’t run it. It caused some commotion and they had to backtrack, and post the story. There have been other incidents where AOL stood in the way of news and I’ve just never been interested in them or having them as a server/filter of the world. I decide what I want to read, not an ISP.

Not sure if term liberal is accurate to describe site that censors arbitrarily and without explanation. I can’t tell you how many times I waited hours and hours in vain, to see comments that I spent serious time posted. Even after attempts to “clean-up” my posts, many never made it thru the “moderating process”. I can’t tell you how fucking frustrating it is to try to adjust one’s writing to fit undefined and capricious standards. Fuck all the HuffPost bullshit! Boy that felt good. It’s nice to find a place where one can actually feel free to write unfettered by small minds and big egos.

Try OpEdNews as well. It’s left leaning, fair and tough. Its run by Rob Kall and regularly features top writers such as Chris Hedges, Michael Winship, Cornel West, Bill Moyers. Jeanine Molloff has a piece connecting the dots from the Gifford’s shooting to the Tea Party, to Mainstream GOP and Tea Party Leaders who are documented leaders/members of white supremacist and neo nazi groups. The documentation is undeniable and the piece fries Palin, Dick Armey, etc. Title: Giffords’ Shooting, Tea Party Hate Speech and Mainstream GOP.

For the last thirty years, the system has often lurked violently to the Right and ‘those’ Liberals simply moved along with it to stay relevant and useful to power and corporations.
The ‘liberal’ serves the same purpose as the clergy used to….if power fucks up, steals too much, kills too many people, breaks it’s own rules, sins, honor…they send out their priests to talk the people down and RATIONALIZE oppression.

A couple of years ago Rachel Sklar among others posted on Huffington Post how Hugo Chavez was an anti-Semite. It seemed a massive pile-on by Jewish advocates to portray Chavez as another Hitler and perhaps deserving some gunboat diplomacy in response. Huffington Post was giving a lot of space to the accusation. With only a little bit of investigation I discovered that the Chief Rabbi of Venezuela, Pinchas Brenner, was part of the coup in 2002 and was at the Presidential Palace along with the right wing cliche who briefly took over. What was remarkable was that not only was this man not arrested but he holds the same job to this day as the Chief Rabbi. The question that begs itself is why didn’t the Venezuelan Jewish Community send him packing? The riff between Hugo Chavez and the Jewish community does not lie on Chavez’s lap but rather on the Jewish community’s complicity in a coup.I never saw any more posts by Sklar or the others on the subject after I posted my response. The issue seemed to disappear perhaps for fear of raising the larger question. When I want to read what douchebags like Alan Dershowitz and Rachel Sklar have to say I’ll look them up. I don’t need the Huffington Post to present them as part of “fair and balanced” reporting.

I stopped reading it a while ago. Huff Post has been leaning Right for about six months now. Now, if only we could get all of us liberals to abandon Obushma and the Corporacrat Party as it appears everyone is doing with abandoning HuffPo.

Other than massive gatekeeping and censorship the fake Democrat, fake “almost left of center populist” so-called “Coffee Party” slaves filled with boot-lickin, servile Obushma worshipers and Democrat Party apologists were as bad as the Teabaggers and RethugliKlans on all fronts like being totally motivated by fear, distracted by scapegoats, selective memory & doublethink, etc…. in short, cheerleaderish sheep… the “lesser evil”/”lesser standards” sect who showed themselves to be no more evolved than the drool & crayons Teabagger sect only they’re better at spelling.

Honestly, I had a radio show as well as “hope” for 5 years, 4 under the real Bush, but the boot-lickin’ Obushmabots stole all of my hope and I quit, Jeff Farias quit, etc…. it’s not JUST that the networks we’ve had were poorly run with capital and then poorly run without capital because I KNOW we showed up and broadcasted with very few people streaming and it was fine that the new venue wasn’t promoted properly but when cave after cave after cave came and Democrats were swallowing half ass talking points and getting fat on bellies full of lie THAT WAS IT!

We liberals need our own media. We liberal ALSO need out own party… but who wants to do more than just talk about it? EXACTLY.

I’ve found that when it comes to sitting on your ass and bitching on the internet there’s a lot of takers eager to get going but when it comes to moving beyond self-fulfillment and requires actually getting up off of your ass and doing something you can count who shows up on one hand. Until THIS changes I have as little faith in my fellow liberals as I do with the lobbyist-owned Democrat Party.

Yes, I use “Democrat Party” because they find it to be insulting. Compared to the Democratic Party of my grandfather they DESERVE to be insulted.

Welcome to all of you HuffPo refugees.

Here at RAW posts are not taken down due to political content, however if you get overly personal with another poster or use profane language out of context then expect to get censored.

You will find that like most progressive sites we have a few resident righties like Broccoli Rob and Tropic girl, who may or may not be a girl, who provide for a good bit of intellectual gymnastics. Add into the mix the libertarian views of Iconoclasm and The Devil Can Dance and we have the full spectrum of political ideology here @RAW

In addition to thoughtful commentary from Dorothy Baker, Yvenno, Pagasae among many others, you will find boat loads of humor to help you get through your day in a world dominated by Wingnut media like RAW’s very own Denny Crane who is always good for a laugh regardless of the subject.

Schroll, read and enjoy one of the Original Progressive sites on the net!

No I don’t work for RAW, I just enjoy a place where I can learn from my fellow progressives

CEOs of multi-national corporations use the same logic as you’re using when they layoff American workers to boost profits and pay themselves bigger bonuses by hiring Chinese slaves. No doubt that a worker who gave 15 of their best years to Caterpillar, GE, etc. feel like a used rubber no different than the HuffPo posters and bloggers.

But no… the odds are overwhelming that whether it’s a corporation or a blog there’s no equity accrued from your participation nor any value held from the owners & staff for its most devoted users/employees.

Remember, should you ever invest your time in something be it a job or what YOU *thought* was activism and community and all of the sudden you’re out, you’re meaningless and worthless and everything you invested is negated with one cashier’s check YOU forfeit the right to complain because seeing as that is what you’re advocating people do here should you complain then that would make you a hypocrite.

Money and activism don’t mix. Activism sites don’t get 24 million visitors a month nor do they get $300M checks. If you want an “Activism” site funded by big business visit mybarackobama.com where people are happy to bust their asses for a cause only to be sold out to the highest bidder.

We must find a new term to describe us. “LIBERAL” is no longer useful, as the Koch/Conservative/Murdoch b***ards have poisoned that well. I was playing piano last night, and introduced to a Korean mother, who also dislikes NYC Mayor Bloomberg (as I do.) Her husband is a cop, and she is in some sort of NYC Korean Cop advocacy agency position. But she said the word LIBERAL as a distasteful thing. It’s then I knew, that tho she and I are on the same side of things, her mind was incapable of divorcing the term LIBERAL from something she knew, but didn’t know why, she hated. We need a new LABEL. Not LIBERAL.

How can you watch Current TV when your cable company doesn’t carry it? What good is Keith going to it when most of us won’t be able to see him. Help me out here.

  • RottenJohnny

Sheesh . . . give me a break. Why don’t people wait and see what happens before abandoning a ship that is probably not sinking anyway. Talk about rush to judgment.

  • sophie

There’s “no real difference,” between someone with critical thinking skills, and someone who lacks them. Moving on…

  • Dravazed

Huffington’s ironically named “moderators” tipped the hand as to what that site is really about. A nastier bunch of self-promoting shmucks would be hard to find. They are simply Arianna without the makeover. So now the mask has slipped, and hopefully at least a few people have learned something from the experience. Huffington Post is no longer on my computer…how about yours?

  • Anonymous

    Well said.

I quit visiting Huff-poo long before Obama took office. The intellectually dishonest mind-guards on the site made a habit of attacking any criticism that didn’t fit its agenda…. criticism of Israel comes to mind. One asshat I remember would, on comments even mentioning Israel, mockingly respond “DA JOOOS, DA JOOOS, it’s always their fault”. The picture was clear to me – it was a site for latte-liberals and corporatists who didn’t want their world-views fucked up with anything messy.

Someone above got it right…..the regulars will probably feel right at home in their new AOL crib.

  • Winski

Ya know… When Huffington first came on the scene some years back, she sounded like Michelle Malkin.. a RABID, foaming-at-the-mouth right-winger that had a huge problem with anything progressive. She has spent many years, trying to convince her readers and staff that she had an epiphany and was now a completely converted progressive. Trying to say all the right things to the crowd and write the things that her handlers thought would make her look more and more like a solid progressive –

SHE FAILED and now we have proof. Hard to re-paint those spots…

  • Dravazed

You mean the system that is collapsing around us? Doesn’t that suggest something to you? Oh…maybe not. Sorry to have disturbed your slumbers…

  • Anonymous

Better get that cash as soon as you can Arianna. AOL stock has been taking a dive. Contributors leaving, readers leading, not much time left.

If you like the old HP, you’re going to love the new one. Look forward to even more fluff and pro-corporate/elite propaganda than ever before there.

  • Anonymous

Well, well, well….the game goes on doesnt it, including the ridiculous left/right theater fed to America by media sources including the polarizing Huffie Post and Fox News of the world. Yes, you played the game just like they baited you into didnt ya? Now, everyone is upset it got sold? Why do you think HP was created in the first place?

    Sobering?

Are you starting to scratch your head about what you have really been propping up all these years? Starting to re-examine where it has all gone wrong?

Yes, HP was already a pushover for the govt and their puppeteers…the big banks, the massive corps. You helped create more demonization, more pitting one against another, more dividing and conquering, more left/right baloney, and more cursory reporting of real issues. HP couldnt even properly report on the most oppressive institution on the planet – debt based monetary systems propagated through private centralized banking schemes.

    Shame, shame, shame.

Didnt you know they always eventually eat their own?

I suggest as you all rush for the exits that you really take stock of what you actually created here. I would offer you may not find its all that pretty a picture, so please, please dont rush out and create more of the same!

Aim higher….much, much higher. Look around you. Look at the pain and suffering. Look at all the demonization….the recipe for the sheep of our society to justify their heinous treatment of people (and definitely the sheep media). Left vs right? Obama has more Wall St. criminals in his cabinet than anyone in the history of our govt including the Bush regime….and people still talk of the left vs the right? How naive of us. Where did the left go while their guy wages broader war on the world? While their guy promotes soul crushing cap and trade schemes only the big boys will survive through (just like BP and Exxon, and Soros told him to), and massive debt that cannot never be repaid making slaves of us all? What do you think this does to the third world, the less well funded types?

How are people this unaware of reality still at this point?

Yes, please do some soul searching before you rush out and re-create the same old lapdog media equation somewhere else.

My apologies. I am just so sickened by this whole lack of awareness to the obvious that my words have a bit of venom of their own.

She started out as a conservative pundit. It was an easy switch to make.

    From wikipedia:

She became known as a reliable supporter of conservative causes such as Newt Gingrich’s “Republican Revolution” and Bob Dole’s 1996 candidacy for president.

  • Anonymous

Really, more of the left/right theater for the masses? Please awaken to the real equation here or simply count yourself, and HP as just another punk to the govt and their puppeteers.

  • Anonymous

I always wondered what part of “leftist” ideology was obsessed with celebrity, fashion and the exposure of women’s breasts; I wondered why Arianna saw herself as immune to criticism; I wondered why so many posts and topics had to be so closely watched and so closely moderated; and I wondered why all posts had to be restricted to fewer than 250 words. But mostly I wondered how it was that some people had “special” relationships with the moderators and could get people banned and unbanned just by exercising their own volition.

Most of these conditions were largely responsible for restricting the conversation rather than encouraging it. In short, it was a highly controlled environment where some people were much more equal than others. And once they started handing out the moderator badges and some people had the power to delete posts at their whim or the whims of their friends, it became completely unworkable!

  • Anonymous

Ariana is an opportunist, used to be a conservative bashes Clinton now a “Liberal” I don’t buy it and I don’t go to HP since the purchase.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I believe they are. Question is, will they learn anything from this that approaches reality, or just run off with more demonizations of the right. To be or not to be….the left/right theater for the masses.

  • Anonymous

Let’s hope that this kills AOL, but Huffington Post will survive. I’m willing to give it a chance, but I’m not optimistic. We’ll have to look closely at the behind the scenes politics, like who (if anyone) AOL gives cash to in the coming months. I read Huff because of it’s contributors, and I always hated the ads but put up with some of them (though Ad Blocks Plus helps cut down on the ads!). Let’s see who writes for the news team. Let’s not forget McClathy–maybe more people will switch to them. Not as swank as Huff, but real news.

You Teabaggers are still more than welcome on HuffPo, more welcome than I or any other liberal, so I rebuke you in the name of Dennis Kucinich and command this white devil to be cast out and return to the pit of FIXED News from which you came!

Throw a temper tantrum and yell “It’s mine!!!” like yall Teabaggers did when a black man was elected president? Yell “It’s mine!!!” like yall did when the piss-poor attempt at giving everyone health insurance?

#1. Thanks for making this easy… almost too easy.

#2. You have socialism and corporatism confused… no doubt this is just one of MANY things you have confused… but when, for example, banks take all of the risk and privatize the profits and socialize the losses this isn’t socialism it’s called corporatism, idiot. What would be socialist instead of bailing out the banks would be nationalizing them, instead of subsidizing and expanding insurance & drug monopolies which is big-fat corporatism to the Nth degree a socialist would have ended the monopolies and made them compete with a national health system.

You’re a corporatist, Arianna is a corporatist and Obushma is a corporatist so please be gone because it’s almost time for Noon Prayer at the US Chamber of Corporatocracy.

The Huffington Post was never my main source for news, and I’m not surprised by the sale to AOL at all. Arianna Huffington has always been a little suspect in my book. Raw Story has been a good source for news, and there are some others out there who truly pursue truthful, ethical, in-depth reporting on issues, with an honest, non-hyperbole approach. • http://twitter.com/RavenWytch RavenWytch

You should have seen the moderation on the merger articles. Nobody could get anything posted. They were falling all over themselves trying to control that narrative.

  • Anonymous

I took Huffington Post off my tabs the day the AOL purchase was announced. Wonder if AOL can still back out…if the page-clicks dwindle to nothing, will they still want HuffPo?

  • Anonymous

    I’m on board with this.

Huffpo was born from the vacuum created by BushCo and the teapugs trying to tear down America and turn it into their own fascist media-controlled state.

Progressives during those times found that >90% of the media public and otherwise, was actually controlled by right-wing corporate interests and thus >90% of the content we would see and hear was distorted through by the corpratocracy.

As in the the days of the wild west, the internet, like the colt pistol became the great equalizer.

Raw Story is also an example of what was born of those days.

Arianna is always one of those players I have watched out of the side of my eyes since she first popped up on the national scene. A right-wing opportunist player that simply saw a path too riches by playing the progressive card. She talks the talk, but has never walked the walk.

I hope my days of getting my information through a filter created by the right-wing are over, for as long as I can stay vigilant to who is actually behind the curtain.

  • Anonymous

I understand far more than you do.

Name me the 30 Democrat Senators who voted to maintain the drug monopoly in the insurance monopoly expansion aka what you call health care “reform”. I’ll give you a hint it was called the Dorgan Amendment. (Note: 30 from “60″ is HALF, BTW.)

Name me the 27 Democrat Senators who voted with the RethugliKlans to kill Kaufman-Brown (I bet you don’t even know what Kaufman-Brown is or who Kaufman and Brown are) which maintained Too Big To Fail in Dodd-Frank.

Name me the amendments Dodd & Frank stripped out in conference and how you can call something “reform” with or without the “historic” prefix when Democrats and Democrats alone stripped all of the reforms except for 1.

In the House Financial Services Committee name the Democrat Blue Dog member who inserted all of the loopholes exempting the $600Tn derivatives market in the committee markup before the bill went to the House floor as a worthless pile of propagandist garbage.

Tell me who repealed Glass-Stegall and via deregulation made FRAUD legal as long as big Wall Street banks do it and then tell me who made sure this is still legal. I’ll give you a hint… both are Corporate Democrats… the first is a DLC Democrat and the second is a New Democrat.

    Question:
Be it “FINREG” aka Dodd-Frank or “HC”R”" aka the insurance & drug monopoly expansion if Democrats were the only one who voted for any of it then why in the Hell does it look like Republicans wrote it?

    Answer:
Because the same lobbyists from the same special interests who write the bills and the checks for the RethugliKlans write the bills and the checks for the Democrats.

Now, do YOU understand how the system REALLY works???

HuffPo definitely started out as a liberal blog. The left blogosphere built and supported that blog and Arianna knows it. The first few years on the site were great. Great bloggers and excellent stories. Most of them rarely post there anymore.

The last couple of years have been insufferable on HP. First they came up with that ridiculous badge system, then allowed regular commenters to become moderators with the power to delete posts. HP moderators have gotten absolutely ridiculous and they constantly delete comments that violate no site policy. You can’t even use the words ‘Arianna’ or ‘Huffington’ on the site and God forbid you post a complaint about the moderation, you’ll be banned. The of course the site has been overrun with conservative trolls.

I finally couldn’t take it anymore and deleted my account a couple of months ago. There are many many better blogs on the net that have integrity.

Maybe you should try, and I mean try, reading Dean Baker’s excellent book, “The Conservative Nanny State How the Wealthy Use the Government to Get Rich, and Stay Rich”, where in it, this Liberal Progressive Economist explains exactly how Capitalism has destroyed this country. Those reforms were achieved by the working class, who pressured “liberal” politicians into passing them, mainly as a result of pressure from the real left. Look what’s happened to liberalism now that the pressure is off: Clinton, Obama, who are tools of the capitalist class.

They are all a bunch of Phil Och’s, “Love Me, I’m a Liberal”-liberals:

    Phil Ochs

I cried when they shot Medgar Evers

    Tears ran down my spine

I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy

As though i’d lost a father of mine

But Malcolm X got what was coming

He got what he asked for this time

So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.S.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
    But don’t talk about revolution
That’s going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I’m glad the commies were thrown out
    Of the AFLCIO board
I love puerto ricans and negros
As long as they don’t move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

    The people of old mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can’t understand how their minds work
What’s the matter don’t they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I read New Republic and Nation
I’ve learned to take every view
You know, i’ve memorized Lerner and Golden
    I feel like i’m almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There’s no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, i’m a liberal

I vote for the democtratic party
They want the UN to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I’ll send all the money you ask for
But don’t ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, i’m a liberal

Once i was young and impulsive
    I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But i’ve grown older and wiser
And that’s why I’m turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, i’m a liberal

Sorry but there isn’t a liberal alive who would think it was neither funny nor cute to select a username of “Rupert Murdoch” so the only people who would buy into you being a liberal are the same short bus riders who believe Obushma is a liberal.

Besides, a real liberal would know that another liberal posting something can only be speaking for him/herself BECAUSE we goose-step to no one’s music. A liberal knows the term “herding cats”… where as when group-thinking Rethugs and Democrat apologists speak they are, IN FACT, speaking for EVERYONE in their group which is evident by the usage of IDENTICAL words and phrases called “talking points” and this is the only language allowed to emerge from their mouths or keyboards because when language is controlled thought is controlled and, evident by your post, they react rigidly when they come across thoughtcrime such as what I posted.

Wrong approach…. Huffington post needs to be a cable news channel on television…. the majority of americans watch Fox News on television and that’s where they get all their news. Fox News has been dumnbing down America … why do you think the elections go so badly. Americans are voting against their best interest because they don’t have time to read the Nation and Mother Jones, and don’t know they are watching conservative propaganda. There seriously needs to be a moderate/left news channel… Olberman got censored…. I’m all for Time Warner & Huffingtonpost putting on a news channel, if this country is going to survive the conservative/murdoch takeover and retain its democracy.

I totally agree with your take on HP. (I can’t begin to count how many of my comments have been thrown in the trash for reasons which totally escape me.) You mention “many better blogs on the net that have integrity”. I’m curious as to which ones have become your favorites.

“In all seriousness, the AOL deal highlights the superdouchery of the superposters or whatever the hell the goody-two-shoes are called on Huffhoes comments. ”

I found these so-called “superposters” to be a kind of irritant, and it somehow supported the notion that Huff Po was/is going elitist. This AOL deal reinforces that for me. They will lose my eyes on their ads. Too bad, in a way, since the site has been carrying a lot of news and has had some really good and articulate bloggers both left and right.

Despite some notion that the country is somewhat in the center, that’s center-left based on polling on social issues, and also most in the center or center-right are not passionate or, often, well informed on issues. That fact will hurt the “new” Huff Po, deservedly. AOL? Give me a break!

I agree… but only after Americans, or at least Democrats, do what the Egyptians are doing and demand real choice and competition in our electoral process otherwise we take an abandoned factory and then go to jail for trespassing. :)

We can take abandoned factories all day long but with Obushma recently letting China off the hook for currency rigging and doing nothing about the incentive to outsource ON TOP OF giving billions in bailout money to outsourcing multi-nationals like Caterpillar, GE, etc. subsidizing their outsourcing it would be futile even if we could operate because we can’t compete with neither slave labor nor devalued currency much less skyrocketing costs from our own government-protected monopolies.

First of all, what’s with the “world of warcraft” speak? Seriusly, get outside and play catch or something. “Seeing the light” begins with getting out of your moms basement.

Secondly, You made three assumptions/personals insults, all of which are wrong and stupid. I am not an idiot, a tea partier (by any stretch of the imagination) or a corporatist.

Third, what are you even talking about when you say “teabaggers yelled it’s all mine”, and what does Obama’s race have to do with anything.

Fourth, when it comes to healthcare, the opponents never yelled “it’s all mine” they yelled “read the freakin’ disastrous bill before you vote on it”, dumbfuck.

Fifth, I was against bailing out the banks, but it appears that they are all paying the money back with interest. Shitty situation, but may turn out ok, and probably had to be done to prevent a global economic meltdown. The banks should have been better regulated BEFORE the crisis so that, their demise wouldn’t lead to global economic demise. By your rationale, someone shouldn’t get treated taken to the ER if they were driving to fast when they wrecked.

Sixth, there is no way for private companies to “compete” with a taxpayer subsidized system of any sort. I’d explain that to you, but I’m pretty sure you are too dense to grasp it.

  • Anonymous

    I hear ya.

What is sad is Obushma is the same way… hence the reason monopolies were expanded and protected, wealth has been transferred from classrooms and infrastructure (read taxpayers) exceeding $5 TRILLION to Wall Street and the Obushma Tax Cuts for the Rich were passed via a “Democrat” regurgitating Rethug talking points.

Dead on, Bill. When there’s lots of money involved those who stand to profit or maintain/increase their power will say ANYTHING to justify it… be it Arianna Huffington or Barack Obushma.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. The increasingly centrist and corporatist tone of Huffpo over the past year or two was upsetting to many. Remember, people, voting with your feet is the only kind of voting that counts anymore. Don’t like it? Don’t go there. I might stay on for a while just to see how crazed it gets, but I can’t get behind anything to do with AOL, which used to be the home for all the technoilliterate crazies for years.

I disagree. Progressive voices will NEVER be silenced, not for long. The history of this country is full of examples of the brutal treatment of progressives. We’re not cowards. We came to our progressive positions in hard-fought battles all along the way. Progressive viewpoints are far from common or popular. If we’ve survived everything else they’ve thrown at us for the last 300 years, we’ll survive whatever they’ve got planned for the next 300. This progressive is never giving up.

Arianna is a political dilettante, tabloid journalist and opportunist. But I quit commenting because of the moderators and their arbitrary censorship but when this news hit I went back and deleted my account. It was interesting to note that while reading a news story there were several comments about friends dropping off the radar and indeed I’d lost several myself.

My alienation to AOL – which was always a bulletin board portal with internet access – was the timeouts and then when I canceled my subscription it took several months before they finally stop charging me for the service and issued a refund. I’m betting that down the line HuffPo will begin charging for “premium” content.

I totally agree with most of your points, but I do believe you’re exaggerating the “banned” business. I’ve been a regular commenter there for years, and I know that if you use the words “Arianna” or “HuffPo,” your comment will be moderated, but that doesn’t mean that it will be deleted nor does it mean your account will be banned. However, they have gone over the top with moderation, and it’s a relief not to be there, quite frankly, where you have to watch every word.

I doubt that. I think she is sincerely liberal in her views. And I’d rather see her on the air than Bill O’Reilly or his ilk any day. The problem is, like most liberals, it seems she cannot get beyond supporting the democratic party as the only response to all our political problems–and it is clear that BOTH parties have sold We the People down the river, since both are heavily influenced by corporate lobbying.

Your reply is in direct opposition to the facts of the times in which these improvements to our society were made. In the 30′s working people were liberals, socialists and even communists. Conservatives were almost exclusively Capitalists and the educated elite therefore your dismissal of liberalism as the founding ideology upon which all progress has been made is flat out WRONG

TR & FDR were avowed progressives/liberals as was LBJ as was the Democratic party of the late 60′s and early 70′s. You need to get some uncensored history books and LEARN who was behind the changes and who was LEADING the charge.

Yes Slick Willie and the O man plowed/ plow middle ground but they are hardly conservative. (see Supreme Court nominees)

  • Anonymous

Right on! (Love your posts BTW)

It’s easy to switch from a Rethug pundit to a Democrat pundit seeing as they’re both bankrolled by and wholly-owned subsidiaries of the same 6 industries who fund the duopoly. The only challenge comes when they have to remember which side of which culture/base-motivating issue they’re on (God, gays, guns, abortion, etc.) because the insignificant stuff is where the ONLY difference in the duopoly lies and for the few where you can still tell any difference whatsoever maintaining this illusion and the sectarianism that stems from it is the only thing protecting the corporatocracy from an all-out revolution.

I was boycotting HuffPo before the AOL sell out because of their 1st Amendment sell out and I’m also boycotting Facebook because they’re owned by Goldman Sachs and more intrusive into people’s privacy than George W. Bush.

Yeah, the censorship is what ran me off… mod abuse… reminds me of the 2005 Great Purge on Randi Rhodes’ message board… except that I was purged from RRMB but left HuffPo in disgust.

But yes, I’ve seen many sites like RRMB & HuffPo who espouse liberalism everywhere except in their own policies.

  • Anonymous

I agree 100%, the moderators on Huff Po go well beyond ‘moderating’ into downright censorship, deleting comments that do not violate the TOS of the site at will. Yes the site had become plagued with con trolls too. Disgusting, and the badge system, again just ridiculous. So many good progressives have left the site. I deleted my account the day I heard the merger. I had a lot of good friends there, and I shall miss them, but I will not waste my time commenting on a corpratist site.

“”She exploited our idealism and let us labor under the illusion that the Huffington Post was different, independent and leftist. Now she’s cashed in and three thousand indie bloggers find themselves working for a megacorp.”"

Sounds like Obama. He “exploited our idealism and let us labor under the illusion that… [he] was different, independent and leftist.” “Now [he's] cashed in (become president) and is letting the “megacorps” run the country.

“We don’t see ourselves as left,” Huffington told Politico. “….. continuing to see everything that’s happening as a right-left issue is missing what’s happening…”

    Sounds like Obama.

Sadly, the rank and file left is just as easy to manipulate as the tea partiers.

I never thought much of Fluffington Post, thought it was fluff flavored as “leftist” (playing the role of “leftwing website” including shilling for Obama) meant to generate revenue. Its sale to AOL fits the pattern, and I hope it has awaked more gullible people to its insidious nature. Please abandon this website now – Let it Die.

I’m looking for Raw Story to upgrade its look and act more like a replacement for HuffPost, sans all the celebrity “news” and corporate “info-mercials”.

You could do it with only a bit more effort associated with style and more outreach with regard to blogging!

  • My3Cats

AH is wherever the money, celebrities and attention are. I never liked her. She’s a phony socialite who has a tremendous talent for trending, cashing in and garnering attention. She’s against whoever because the “against” is what draws in capital. I remember her vitriol against Bill Clinton and the Democrats back in the 90′s. Back then she was all over Newt Gingrich. She pretends this “spiritual awakening” to the left, but it’s the left that’s brought her boat loads of cash and ever more powerful celebrity.

  • Natalie Smith Parra

My Ariana story: She contacted ME (a single mom and struggling writer) to ask if I would write a short piece for her book On Being Fearless. I agreed to do it and I spent three days writing. Ariana, in the end, was afraid of the story because it named Ezola Foster (Pay Buchanan’s former running mate) who had sued me when we taught together at Bell High School. I called her sidekick Agapi to ask if I could at least get paid a nominal amount for my time. Instead of money, Ariana thanked me in her book. Wh00p.

Then I saw the pictures of Ariana’s house in Vanity Fair, and I looked around at my tiny place that I could barely afford, and I knew that Ariana Huffington was no good! So, Ariana, if you’re reading this, please pay me for the three days I wrote for you!

  • Anonymous

I have no doubt considering how tight the moderation was getting there. When you have to try to parse every word when commenting, to make it past the censors, it is time to leave the site. I truly like this site’s flow of commentary. Very refreshing.

  • Anonymous

I think reclaiming a word would be energy wasted.
You’re 100% correct, imo, as to why she can’t divide the two,
but with a new term (like Progressive, but….) we could hit the ground running, and push for our agenda, instead of just pushing to get back to square 1, and THEN start pushing all over again. Tea Party got a pretty good bump due to the “New Thing” factor….

  • Anonymous

We have seen all we have to see, as a former regular to the Huff Po, the moderation had become censorship, they would post stories, and then be so tight that your comments would hardly make it through, and then all the right wing fanatic trolls. Remember, Ariana was a conservative pundit in the 1990s. Around the turn of the century, she started adopting more liberal views. One has to wonder was the progressive side of the equation only a market decision she made to maximize profits – with no real substance beyond milking an up and coming electorate. Three hundred and fifteen million dollars seems to be the price tag she needed to swap ideological benches from grassroots diva to corporate darling.

I have officially abandoned huffpo – I’ve been sick of that site for a long time but the AOL buy was the final straw.

    Yep…I hale from The Cleve.

I like the Current TV site A LOT. It’s really cool, you can build your own page. THEY do the moderating, not commenters. Moderators even jump in the convo. They have badges but they don’t display anywhere but your own page. You have an email box so you can send prive e-mails to other commenters. A lot of HP regulars moved over there.

  • Anonymous

It wasn’t always the case, but very recently HP has been threatening people who post comments complaining about the Mods with banning. I know at least one reg who was and had to make up a new sock. I’ve seen with my own eyes them deleting posts complaining about the moderating and it’s happened to me. I am not exaggerating.

  • Anonymous

Go to the Current TV site and register. A lot of former HPers went there when they heard KO was going to be on Current. Their site is really cool. You get your own page with an email inbox for private convos w/other commenters. They have badges but they don’t show up in your box when you comment or really mean anything, they’re just listed on your page. The moderating is done by the site, not commenters and they’re very liberal, no unreasonable censorship.at all.

Why not give AH a month to deposit the check, and see if she’s going to share the proceeds of the sale with the writers who made HuffPo what it is?

AH is only a sell-out if she caves to advertisers’ requests to kill or influence stories. Maybe she truly believes that truthful, progressive news can be a good business?

All I’m seeing & hearing here is a lot of projection, and assumptions about what AH is going to, or not going to do.

Authors who contributed to HuffPo did so knowing what they were getting — no $$, but exposure. Has there been any communication from AH to the HuffPo authors? Has she sent out an email saying, “Thank you for your past contributions to HuffPo. I certainly hope that you will continue contributing, and now we have the financial resources to compensate you for your writing.”

I realize that when it comes to news & media, the cynics are usually correct; but in this case, it seems prudent to give AH the benefit of the doubt — for a month, at least.

  • Red Raleigh

Jeez, HuffPo jumped the shark a long time ago. Just look at all those tabs! And every day there’s a new blaring 2-inch red headline. They have one of the worst comment engines that’s heavily moderated. It’s really morphed into a bizarre Enquirer-like site.

My initial reaction to the news of the sale was dismay. AOL may be a “brand” but not so positive. Remember all the people who lost their computer’s data because of AOL’s proprietary software? Even now their mail service is sub-par. I think these bloggers have a point, and while I don’t blame Arianna for “cashing out”, I feel AOL may have bought another pig-in-a-poke. It just won’t be the same under the “AOL umbrella”. Sort of like MSNBC with Comcast and without Keith.

All I can say is that I hope you are right and I am wrong. We live in scary times with scary people calling for elimination of things in our country that make it great. For instance the other night I was watching on PBS a documentary about the making of the Panama Canal and I was struck with sadness that PBS funding for shows like that could be eliminated because republicans in congress don’t want tax payers to pay for public TV and viewpoints. They are talking about doing away with social security, medicare, head start, food stamps, etc. Through their deep pocketed media empire they are convincing a large portion of this country to think defunding these programs are a good idea to cut the deficit when all it does it hurt the American people. That is why I fear that we will be silenced as the right wing thugs will continue to brainwash people into thinking and voting against their own best interests.

I wonder how many progressives have actually researched the realities of what it takes to get a viable third political party up and running, not to mention getting enough third-party candidates elected in order to gain a majority in Congress? My guess is not many. Getting a third political party up and running, along with enough electable third-party candidates that could form a powerful coalition within Congress strong enough to actually effect meaningful change could take several years to achieve–not to mention the huge amount of money it would require. Frankly, I don’t think we have that much time left. So I agree with you that the best strategy for effecting meaningful change within just a few years would be to work with what we have today and MAKE it work for us. Indeed, in that regard, liberals/progressives could learn a great deal from the teabaggers.

Something else the progressives could learn from the republicans in general is the value of maintaining a united front. The democratic party and their progressive base always fall prey to divide and conquer political strategies. It’s very disheartening to me that so many progressives are so easily duped into turning on their own. You don’t hear republicans–teabagger or otherwise–constantly threatening to abandon their party. But if things don’t happen fast enough to suit liberals/progressives, their answer is to immediately abandon their party (by threatening to form a third-party or vote for an unknown third-party, or simply stating they’re not going to vote at all). Instead of strengthening their resolve to fight harder to make the democratic party better by electing people that represent liberal/progressive values in both their words and deeds–no, too many liberals/progressives just give up and walk away. It’s that kind of self-defeating short-sightedness that guarantees that the republican ideology will prevail. (I’m also suspicious of the motives of some of the RS posters that work so hard to convince people to vote third party or not vote at all–because that plays right into the republicans’ political strategy of eliminating votes for the democratic party–if they can convince democrats not to vote or to vote third party, it’s a win for them.)

Well, the internet has a mountain of free content and nearly free space in which to write. HP only gave it’s citizen journalists a name under which they could publish their work. There are, fortunately, places they can go to accomplish the same goals they had while writing for and reading the HP.

OK, you can’t answer my questions and you don’t know when to quit….

    *sigh*

    You asked for it..

1-A. I never played “warcraft” unless you want to count being an 0331 Marine (That means Infantry, machine gunner) humping a 23lb M-60E3 machine gun all over Hell’s Creation until an AK round “ventilated” my upper left thigh leaving me in physical therapy until I was discharged. Does that count?

1-B. I don’t have a basement, we don’t have them in North Texas due to the clay soil… but I’m in my first home with 4 bedrooms, 3-car garage, granite counter tops, gameroom, media room and just under 4,000 sq ft. I’d argue that my closet with espresso-stained wood cabinetry, 36 built-in drawers and 42 linear feet of rods is nicer than anything you have.

    2. OK. So you’re a boot-lickin’ servile Democrat Party apologist. If you knew anything you’d know that idiots, Teabaggers (they’re called TEABAGGERS not tea partiers, there brain surgeon), corporatists and Democrat apologists are the same damn species… at least, to a party/person loyalty-oath free Liberal.

    3. With Teabaggers, Obushma’s race has to do with EVERYTHING or are you too slow to catch on that they just up and started giving a shit about the Constitution and spending when a black man was elected after the white man who proceeded him shit all over the deficit and squandered a surplus and wiped his ass with the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Common Article III, UN Convention Against Torture, Title 18 USC, etc. I’m guessing you didn’t notice the Teabagger House Caucus defeating the Patriot Act renewal last night because the idea of Obushma having the intrusive power Bush wielded was too much which is either because he’s black or he’s a “Democrat”. Maybe you missed that bit of news trying to teach me something, huh? LOL

4-A. “Keep your government hands off my Medicare” was just one sign carried by a Teabagger that liberals laughed their asses off at for months so if you’re not a Teabagger, corporatist, idiot, etc. and you’re in my circle on the Left I don’t know how you missed that “it’s mine!” bit. What about Teabagger’s claim that Obushma was going to take their insurance and give it to undocumented workers and Rush’s claim that “Obushmacare” was backdoor reparations? Did you miss that too? There’s many other examples like the white lady crying about getting her country back but I don’t have the time to list them all.

4-B. Yes Rethugs were screaming read the bill… and for months on my radio show I was screaming at Democrat loyalists to read the bill… because I READ the bills… I read HR 3200, HELP Cmte and the final version that was more right wing corporatism than the right wing proposed in 1993 led by Gengrich & Tauzin.

    Question:
In the most “robust” versions of the so-called “public option” – HR 3200 & HELP – tell me about the grandfather clause and the essential benefits clause and what that did for citizens with “pre-existing coverage” as well as the poorest of citizens who work full-time for say Wal-Mart yet are enrolled in Medicare and what changes they would have faced should these loopholes have been passed because one group would get no change and the other group would have gotten a change but no in a good way.

Seeing as you didn’t answer what I asked you to tell me about Dorgan, Kaufman-Brown, etc. I won’t hold my breath for you to answer this question, either.

Hell, just tell me what Sen. Baucus said in the Senate Finance Committee when he refused to let Sen. Wyden’s Free Choice Amendment get a vote on the committee?

5-A. I’m sorry… the vastness of what you either don’t know or are conveniently omitting to make your point overwhelms what few factual points you did present. They’ve almost paid back TARP with interest…. TARP is 2% of the $25 TRILLION in loans and loan guarantees.

QE1, Quantitative Easement (1) from 2009 was $1 TRILLION in inflationary money printing from the Fed that was handed over to Wall Street under Obushma with no strings attached.

QE2′s $600Bn is set to be handed to Wall Street from the Fed in March 2011.

Yes, it’s EASY to pay back $787Bn in TARP when you use $1Tn from the Fed a year later to pay back TARP so that dumbshits like you can post the dumshit you posted as well as letting you pay yourselves record compensation.

    Question:
Tell me what TAF, TALF, CPFF among others means, give me the price tag and then tell me why someone “so well informed” as you think you are have no idea what these things mean?

    Question:
If everything is being paid back, with interest, as you soooo erroneously stated then why is another bailout for Wall Street, this one being $600Bn coming next month?

5-B. Banks WERE better regulated for the nearly 6 decades BEFORE the meltdown… and then Bill Clinton repealed Glass-Stegall by signing the Gramm/Leach/Bliley Act (1999) and passed the Commodities Futures Modernization Act (2000) which legalized greed and fraud and CAUSED the crisis. Odd, someone who thinks they know enough to talk down to someone else should have know this fact.

    6. DUH private insurance companies can’t compete with single payer… that was the whole point in we liberals wanting single payer and the REASON I brought it up and phrased it the way I did which OBVIOUSLY you were too dense to pick up on.

I got a pry bar in the garage so when the roads thaw out I’ll come free you from the cross you climbed up on and nailed yourself to this morning. Now, if I assumed something wrong about you that’s my shortcoming but you replied to me in the manner you did and set the tone for this exchange, there servile one, and I believe in reciprocity – The Golden Rule – meaning you talk to me instead of talk at me and actually contribute something I’ll engage constructively but if you try to be cute I know I’m much cuter than you could ever be in your wettest dream. See, I didn’t cuss you as you did me and it’s not that I’m afraid of you by any means it’s just that I’m not letting myself get down to that level because I know myself and once that line is crossed I can only have 1 goal and when you add up training, testosterone and being able to push/pull more than my body weight in every direction this is a place I cannot go and be responsible so, let me be clear, you’re not even worth enough to get me to even get me pissed enough to cuss. LMAO

I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude regarding boycotting HuffingtonPost because Arianna sold it to AOL. It could be a good thing for both Huffington Post and Arianna if it provides wider distribution/availability/visibility to HuffPost and gives Arianna a hand in molding AOL content. She’s shown herself to be a solid proponent of progressive ideas and shouldn’t be thrown under the bus because she made HuffPost a success and sold it to some corporation looking to expand their influence. More power to her.

Ask yourself why AOL would want to change the successful model they just paid millions to purchase.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZYBTYW2TZW6PQEIUXAD2SPIK5U CAROL JERRAM

I removed my HuffPo bookmark the minute I learned of the AOL purchase. I’ll never go to the site again. But we need one replacement, not a dozen replacements which dilutes our power. That just accomplishes what the right wanted when they bought the site.

What a bunch of baloney. The left is greatly indebted to Arianna. She gave us a place to congregate, to learn, to improve our arguments and develop are thinking. She gave us the needed access to organize on occasion. She gave us breaking news with perspective to build on. She built something hugely important. She is remaining after the purchase to see that the brand is improved, not marginalized. She is not making the same mistake that Turner made with CNN. She still weilds control. This is a manufactured story. Those that are whining, perhaps, do not have the talent to hang on and are being replaced by sharper minds and better contributors. The left should be championing this, for growth is essential in combating the corporate TV media and talk radio empires.

I didn’t delete Huffpo from the favorites, but it did get moved into the Corporate news sub-folder of News favorites with Faux, ABC, CBS and CNN. I only go to those sites on occasion, usually to see what the corporate news wont follow or what parts of the stories they conveniently leave out. So, bottom line is that I may not NEVER go back, but it wont be several times a day(or even once a week) anymore. Fuck you corporate media.

  • Anonymous

What a knee jerk reaction. Did you read that Arianna maintians editorial control of HuffPost? Why would you abandon something before you even see what materializes? AOL knows what they bought and knows who supports the Post. Do you honestly think they would attempt to measureably rebrand it thus throwing away exactly what they bought? That would be like Rupert Murdoch buying MSNBC, turning it into FOX and expecting to keep the same viewers. AOL bought HuffPost as an investment that they want to grow and changing the core of HuffPost would destroy that investment.

  • Anonymous

I abandoned huffpo a long time ago, the censorship on that website is incredible. If you dare mention anything negative about Arianna Huffington it is struck down. If you even tried to post anything about her ugly blackberry/airplane incident it was censored right away. That sounds a hell of a lot more authoritarian than liberal or progressive to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dorothy-Banks/100001470098554 Dorothy Banks

Money talks and bullshit walks. Arianna Huffington and her partners had a right to sell Huffington Post. That’s business. The site will still have thousands of posters. The site doesn’t belong to the people. It provides a place to vent frustrations that posters can’t do on TV or in the media.

I don’t understand the “we made you, we can break you” attitude. It’s silly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Zentrails/100001475536421 Bob Zentrails

Actually Arianna was a Repub before she turned fake Lib and is now just returning to her roots.

    No surprise here.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NO4EXXA4CF5SCNMNNV4UX2WK6Y Scott

If she intended to share with the community, you would think it would have been at least mentioned in part of the press releases. By not even touching on the idea, even after the criticism has come out, it kind of reinforces the “She’s in it for the money, and thinks she made the site alone” theory. People whom she associates with had to know that selling to a large corporation would go over poorly in the progressive community, so even if greed and megalomania make her want to not share or acknowledge the people who drove traffic to the site, its a horrible business/PR move.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Zentrails/100001475536421 Bob Zentrails

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NO4EXXA4CF5SCNMNNV4UX2WK6Y Scott

    Silly?

    Actually it’s pretty simple.

Web site value is derived from traffic, which sells ads. It is not silly to say taking away the traffic will ‘break’ the site. Go progressives, fight corporate controlled news(propaganda).

  • Anonymous

Combating corporate TV media empires? Just what do you think AOL is, in fact they have proven by their previous campaign of refusing to let people cancel their subscriptions, that they are one of the worse corporate offenders. What planet do you live on? Maybe you are one of those censors over their on HP.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NO4EXXA4CF5SCNMNNV4UX2WK6Y Scott

MSNBC isn’t what it should be to progressives, and that is because GE(now Comcast) owns it. It may not have editorial ‘control’ on content, but it can kill stories that hurt it’s bottom line.

Now Huffpo has fallen down and joined the ‘almost progressive’ news agencies, how DLC.

  • Anonymous

You are just wrong. The bloggers and the comment-ors made the HP, the PROGRESSIVE ones at that, not the administration apologists, or the right wing trollies, or the moderators with badges turned censors. AOL has lost 315 million in share value since announcing this deal, and Huff Po has lost many regulars, I don’t think it was such a hot move for the Huff Po. Now Arriana will pocket dozens of millions on the deal, but I wager the site will be on a long down slide without the progressives, just like this administration.

It’s now fully absorbed and assimilated into the propaganda machine of the NWO elites. Most of the MSM is part of that, getting the people to wage a war against each other, getting them to focus on fighting each other so they don’t concentrate on what is being done right before their eyes to bring a one world government, currency, and religion upon all mankind. P.S., If the NWO elites believe the things written on the Georgia Guidestones (and I believe they do), then, they’ll have no problem with initiating a nuclear confrontation and killing massive numbers of people to accomplish that goal. We’re closer to that time than most of you think and/or realize. Amen.

I’d really like to see an expose about HuffPo’s comment moderators vs. the fantasy that it offers an open forum for liberals.

A few weeks ago. Arianna got into a minor airline scrape — she kept working on her Blackberry after the “turn electronic devices off” announcement, wound up talking with police after her flight landed.

In no time, a “HIGH PRIORITY ALERT” was posted on an internal HuffPo message board for moderators:

“Please make sure not to allow any comments about the airline incident involving AH this past weekend. It is off-topic on any article.”

    http://tinyurl.com/4hzr44u

That’s a very minor example of the kind of censorship HuffPo’s been practicing for a long time, and which increased tremendously in the last few months apparently to help the AOL deal.

HuffPo’s image as a “bastion of liberalism” is a sham.

I agree with this article. I wrote Arianna probably four times asking why she would not support Kucinich. No reply, not once. She wrote him off before he got out of the starting block–a self-fulfilling prophecy if ever there was one..

My humble suggestion to readers: Go to OpEdNews.com. Rob Kall is doing an amazing job on an infinitesimal fraction of the Huffington Post.

As for Arianna, I hope she donates her millions to good drinking water for third world kids. Based on things I recall reading, I expect she could save 600 million kids this year.

Why would a Huffington, a moneyed debutant, have any real connections to progressives? Like Glenn Beck, she can change her wardrobe and her political leanings in an eye blink – ur contract signing. Those who got sucked into her tail wind should be more careful in the future. These people like Huffington are about money and market. AOL prepare to have your stock prices take another tumble – in the age of the internet, corporate control of the news will become increasingly problematic.

  • http://twitter.com/InYourFaceRadio In Your Face Radio

“We don’t see ourselves as left,” Huffington told Politico. “And I think it’s one area where news consumers are ahead of the media, because they know that continuing to see everything that’s happening as a right-left issue is missing what’s happening, and is also making it much harder for us to be properly informed.”

She’s lying!!! She’s using the right/left unity paradigm t justify taking money from the CEO who supports Republicans. She took a far left position when she ran for Governor in Cali.

  • Anonymous

It’s another move to co-opt the Left, just like the Dems have been doing for years; quietly and cleverly shift a progressive movement to come under corporate control while doing slight of hand to make people miss what is going on right before their noses. Heading over to Puff-Po to cancel my membership. Long live RAW!

I love this story … February 9, 2011, Republican Rep Christopher Lee was found to have been responding to personal ads on Craigslist posing as a 39-year-old divorced lobbyist using his real name, sending shirtless photos to strangers.Lee resigned from office today issuing a statement saying “I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately.” No plans for a special election have yet been announced.

I am proud to say that I was BANNED from the Huffpost after I criticized the now gone Larry Summers and other cabinet members who were too stupid for words. The president’s power lies with the competency of his cabinet members; his appointments and the constant community organizer drone of his addresses turned me off, permanently off.

I only go there when Raw links me there. It’s because I despise Ariana Huffington’s speaking voice. Comparing a blogger/poster to the American working class is bullshit. Are you really that important? ‘Cause if you are then it really shouldn’t matter upon which domain name you publish. What’s stopping you from creating “www.SensiScholarPost.com?”

So pull yourself off that cross before THEY persecute you any more. 95% of HP was crap anyway.

Due diligence. Anyone spending 30seconds researching Arianna’s past would not have been surprised. How long ago was she an elite conservative? How many works has she plagiarized? The name alone “Huffington Post” conveys delusions of grandeur.

Holy crap! You have WAYYYYY too much time on your hands!

I didn’t bother to read your tripe, but I got as far as the part where you were bragging about your house.

First of all, Thank you for your service to our country. Sincerely, I really appreciate the sacrifices that you guys have made.

Secondly, I find that when people brag about their financial situation (or their intelligence, or their dick size) they are a little insecure about it. Nevertheless, I’m am glad that you have been able to do so well for yourself on a serviceman’s salary. However, I’d be glad to compare my net worth with you any time ;)

EDIT: I skimmed the rest of your rant. Without getting into details, let me warn you that a little information can be a dangerous thing. I have degrees in economics, finance, and accounting. I have been working in the field of economics and finance for nearly twenty years after spending a couple of years in accounting. You seem to have at least a rudimentary understanding of the topics you brought up, but I won’t tell you how ignorant you are about soldiering, and I’d offer you the same advice regarding the field of economics.

I read their FAQ on censoring and they actually can and do perm block comments by IP Address. The moderators were more about directing and controlling the debate then acting like moderators. I called Bill Clinton a sociopath and “that was all she wrote” as the saying goes.

Correct. You do not understand. There were dozens of citizen bloggers who posted lots of content. That was the site only fresh content. Patience might count. The big thing is whether AOL is seeking change and rather than influencing Huffington Post they bought it to influence AOL, which is indicated by the change in editorial leadership. I never had a post modded out, always focused on issues rather than people and did so pretty aggressively with a definitive social democracy bias.
It should be obvious that a more social, people orientated approach wins on the internet, sure there are for profit right wing web sites but they get pretty low hits, terrible comments and pretty much lose money, only surviving on behind the scenes donations from corrupt corporations.
Not that people shouldn’t swap web sites, however, the focus should be on monitoring AOL to see whether they shift to centre left and whether their hate filled far right wing comments are eliminated.
So it really doesn’t matter which way Huffington Post goes (as an aggregator it is readily replaceable) what counts is how much AOL shifts to the left, looking to the future, rather than focusing on the past with the dying of old age Fox not-News audience.

  • Anonymous

When Huffington Post banned me for daring to question the official 9/11 myth in the comments I thought it was a clear indication of a corrupted agenda. Then they invited Jesse Ventura to write but censored his (expected) take on the same issue. More than a need to protect readers from such thought, it seems that was part of their appeal to sociopathic corporate Person like AOL. May all writers of conscience now avoid it like the plague.

arianna huffingtons pieces were always of high quality, the problem is that some editor schmucks turned the huffpost into a cess pool, with their badges, censorship, agendas (like the one’s you speak of), and other things directly flying in the face of the fundamental beliefs of true progressives. I deleted my account months ago and found a reasonable home here that does not censor. I will never participate in any online organization/publisher that censors based on political leanings. The HP started as a reliable forum for discussion of progressive political and social issues. It quickly degenerated into a feeding frenzy of adverts posing as articles, National Inquirer style headlines bearing little resemblance to the actual article content, and inane pieces, such as their Top Ten XXX, written by apparent idiots. I moved on months ago. There is a need for a publication which embodies the principals and philosophy of the original HP.

It used to be that you would see hundreds or thousands of fans. You don’t see them anymore. I also left. I got tired of the comment pending and seeing a comment disappear within two minutes. Strange though, I never saw a comment disappear if I said something critical about Obama, but a comment would never appear if I was critical about Palin, Boehner, McCain or other high ranking republicans.

I guess the HP will become a place like Yahoo, and that is just not a great place to have a fair and engaged conversation. HuffPo’s been in a graveyard spiral for some time now, IMO. I’ve had to choke down a lot of irrelevant infotainment blather that panders to the cult of lightweight celebrity, goofy religious nonsense and fraudulent pseudoscience there the past couple of years while casting about for a few meager, seemingly progressive crumbs. I’m much more impressed with Paul Jay’s “Real News Network”, especially his ongoing coverage of the Harper regime’s police state attacks on progressives at the G20 summit in Toronto last June.

Arianna has revealed herself what she really is – an amoral, gadfly opportunist who doesn’t give a gnat’s ass about principle or people who really need help; an already obscenely wealthy woman who needlessly enriches herself in a time of widespread deprivation and struggle. So much for Third World America, eh, Arianna? Whether it’s $20 or 315 mill a whore by any other name…

I’ve de-listed HuffPo from my bookmarks and canceled my profile after being there nearly six years; I won’t be back.

How so? They had a free community by which to exchange information so the fact she profited immensely from it doesn’t mean those who utilized the site for free were “suckers.”

I’ve already stopped reading HuffPo and will continue to do so. I think my comments have been heavily censored recently and I still don’t understand why HuffPo never had any science section, but then again people think I’m a conspiracy theorist. I’ve read truthout, which is a decent site, but my question is why did you include the Cato Institute? To my knowledge it is hardly a liberal think-tank. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Dave, you’re a very wise man. I totally agree that very often comments are far more informative than the article. Totally.

I was wondering what was up when I saw some highly dubious people posting there? I forget who exactly because I don’t follow trash. In other words, I’m way beyond caring what establishment folk think or want. But it was when HuffPo added about twenty sections, including the ludicrous College, that I suspected something was wrong, but the best evidence was when Howard Fineman appeared.

  • Anonymous

I Agree and felt the same way. Hell I was there last week and found a “Combat Fighting Section.” It is mimicking the original AOL in that they tried to build their own internet so people would not leave their site and therefore lose their sponsor ad clicks. Way too much crap there now, sometimes you cannot quickly find current political news because the front page is filled with celebrity crap, ‘news of the weird’ stories, etc.

  • Anonymous

I agree we should sue HuffPo. I really believe that the left should start suing corporations and politicians. I’ve been tinkering with suing Obama for failing to enforce the Constitution, particularly the equality clauses, allowing corporate interference in the political process, and the illegal and phony wars on terra’ that I think have a deleterious effect on my life and for that and other reasons I’m entitled to damages. Of course the entire Bush administration should be sued for effectively wrecking milllions and millions of people’s entire lives.

  • DriveBy

The Left, unlike the Right, does not need a watering hole. I see nothing wrong with reading the Huffington Post if it remains a news gathering website, and does not become something colorless like CNN.

  • Anonymous

I know that may sound wacky, but the truth is that our political, economic and judicial systems are all broken and so unless the decent people in America are willing to revolt maybe a massive attack on the judicial system is just one way to make our voice heard and a peaceful way to bring down the whole illegitimate military regime masquerading as a civilian government.

After 5 years and two months, and multiple “badges”, I deleted my account on HuffPo yesterday. This only after 10 of my 12 posts were censored in the past 3 days, all of which contained very tame language but mentioned Fox News by name.

Hope HuffPo’s advertisers are paying attention.

With Olbermann’s elimination, moving Ed Schultz late into the evening for most of us in the Eastern or Central time zones, and Comcast’s takeover of NBC Universal, there is a move afoot by the right to stifle those of us who would disagree with them.

MSNBC easily has the ratings to qualify for a slot in any standard cable TV package, yet they will continue to keep MSNBC off to the side, and during late evenings and weekends, run “Lockup Raw” and other useless programs instead of actually running news programs during those times to compete with Fox.

When they play with the media like this, we are reminded why Net Neutrality is so important.

    WTF???

How refreshing to be able to post without using Morse Code. The censorship at HP is beyond ridiculous and is pretty much pointless unless you’re into using a Stepford Wife mentality. Not this girl!! Don’t even get me started on the seemingly schizoid flip flopping of Arianna.

I’m sick of HP. After being banned numerous times over NOTHING, this merger will only make it worse. Have you ever read AOL comments? They are rude, obnoxious and insulting. I’ve been a member of HP since 2006 and it’s become the National Enquirer II, not only the articles (10 stories front page on Palin/Bachman today!) but the posters. Like someone below says … it used to be you’d see posters with thousands of fans. Now the numbers are low…because Progressives like me keep getting banned, over nothing. I hope this merger destroys HP…I really do. So long AH. You can take your Moderators and stick it where the sun don’t shine.

Dear Raw Story, Today HP has a perfect example of what NOT to do (aside from increasing misrepresented headlines): A grown man crying about the closing of his library. It is one thing to explore the significance of the closing. However, the story focuses on the man’s crying. HP had a chance to examine the significance of library closings in a country that already lags behind the literacy rates and levels of other developed countries. Instead, HP chooses to ignore the person’s loss of intellectual stimulation and in its stead plays up the fellow’s difficult in containing his response. HP is now relying on immature youngsters and totally dull witted adults. RS, do not resort.

Uh, she was not our support, dough-dough head. It is the kind of thinking in your statement “abandoned” that puts the concept of dependency without scrutiny on media in the hands of those who lack analytical abilities, such as your self. Let me translate: your statement is kin to making fun of someone wearing a hat because you do not know what cold weather is. O, you are speaking out of your derriere.

Maddow recently did an analysis of the two conservative “parties”. One is the Authoritarian Conservative concept. This person’s comments springs from this kind of thought. As if anyone to the left of middle NEEDED the authority/umbrella/daddyism of HP’s shelter for voicing thoughts. You can see this analysis on the Feb 8th Maddow show. Peace to you, PlaneJane.

I will continue going to huff,,I think this is a ridiculous article. Sounds like a bunch of little kids mad because someone else is going to be playing in our neighborhood. Best part is AOL is very right and it will show them there are other points of view rather than Fox. Look at those people on tv last night from Iowa talking about how our president is anti-american, socialist, letting our country down. They got all the talking points from people on Fox like Beck, O’Reilly, Palin and the rest of them. I say, maybe the polls they take on AOL will be a bit more balanced now.

You don’t read my posts, you don’t answer direct questions and instead of talking to me you’re still talking at me.

Secondly, I described my house because you came with the “Mom’s basement” and “warcraft” shit in your first post to me starting this exchange on a shitty note with personal attacks instead of addressing substance.

Serviceman’s salary? Take your “thanks” and shove it up your ass seeing as you clearly look down on members of the military because the pay is low. My guess is this is one of many reasons you never served along with being either not patriotic enough, love of self trumping love of something bigger or simply being a big ol’ pussy. I’m betting on the latter…

I never really addressed economics… my comments, if I recall correctly, were germane to legislation and trillions in loans and loan guarantees in response to your claim that the taxpayers have been made whole which is NOT the case. We’d talk about this but you refused to engage ANYTHING of substance.

Judging by the context of your posts, unlike you I read every word AND responded to every word, you are my elder yet by your behavior you’d never fucking know it. One would think that with your age estimated in the 40s – 50s and three degrees as you posted that you’d be more mature.

My guess is you are mature but the safety of the internet lets you act in a manner I know you wouldn’t do in person because you’d get fucked up. As your junior let me advise that a real man doesn’t say anything anonymously they wouldn’t say face-to-face like a bitch would do. For those, like you, who know they’re not going to get their ass kicked because they’re posting anonymously on the internet and this empowers them to use language they wouldn’t use in a face-to-face conversation it makes you of the same ilk as the Mom’s basement dwelling warcraft players in my eyes because talking the kind of shit you talked aint any goddamn different from playing a computer game cuz that’s all the fuck this is… your “warcraft” substitute where you can be a self-appointed bad ass without breaking a sweat or bones.

So, this is all I have to say to you. I hope you think about your behavior and how it’s bitch shit to say something online you wouldn’t say in person and I hope it benefits you to start a conversation next time on the subject matter in lieu of personal attacks and I think you owe it to your age and your 3 degrees to grow the fuck up. I realize you’re just doing a bitch’s job and that’s who you are and all you know but given a choice I’d rather have had a real discussion and left the conversation with some respect for you and whatever substance you brought to the table but you ruined this on your first post but, hey, that’s what bitches do and the internet is full of your type.

No, the comparison isn’t bullshit from the perspective of workers/bloggers, posters, etc. who dedicated themselves to something – in this case an illusion – and felt they built equity in something only for it to be squandered. I can sympathize with this sentiment even thought I was never “attached” to HuffPo like a lot of people who were believers. I learned long ago that community and activism don’t mix on for profit websites as their emphasis is on revenue whereas the activist is focused on the cause and communities are focused on the community itself. There’s no middle ground and this isn’t a pleasant fact to learn for those who were committed and LITERALLY wasted time believing in an illusion.

I created a grassroots progressive news junkie site in 2005 where we organized some of Camp Casey, created some radio shows that got syndicated, assisted by helping other radio shows and a few other things but we didn’t have Arianna’s money and NEVER did ANY of it for money. You can’t see it, apparently, but those who are upset about HuffPo weren’t in it for money, either. They’re upset because to them HuffPo was bigger than money and this can be a bitter pill to swallow.

I’m not on a cross, you are, I’m not upset in the slightest because HuffPo’s gatekeeping censorship isn’t something I condone so I’ve boycotted that site for a while now. You’re the one telling others how they should feel where as I was defending them because I understand where they’re coming from and believe they’re entitled to vent without someone telling them they’re stupid for being upset.

Wow, nasty. It’s not like everybody doesn’t know that’s the truth anyway. Gun, car, big bad dog – all well known penis extensions. Let’s see how it shakes down as HP turns into AOLite.

  • Anonymous

Hmm. I did not know that. I mean, I complain about the mods fairly regularly, and I’ve never been banned, although years and years ago, one particular mod seemed to be following me around and I emailed HP and complained, and the harassment stopped. And they did suspend my account once, but that was a long time ago, too. I guess I’ll have to take your word for it, since I’m not planning to spend a lot of time there any more.

McClatchy is much better in terms of real news. I only went to Hufflepuff for the conversations with the commenters. Now that most of them seem to have left, what’s the point? Raw Story carries much more news, TruthDig, AlterNet, and BuzzFlash have a much more liberal/progressive take on things. HP isn’t carrying anything everyone else isn’t carrying. Except maybe the tons of Palin material.

  • Anonymous

It might not die, but it’s pretty severely wounded. It’s already pretty rightshifted.

I don’t think anybody who was paying attention ever thought she was progressive. It was obvious that she saw a market, and being a savvy marketer, she filled it. But, you know, seriously, look at the people she hangs out with. They’re the richie riches, not the progressives.

We seem to be in agreement, though perhaps I’m a tad more optimistic that Huff will remain as a progressive leaning source. You’re right–it doesn’t carry anything that can’t be found elsewhere. It may take more than one site to get access to the commentators, but there are alternatives. I’ll be watching Keith on Current tv; I can keep up with the news without the Huff. Adriana may regret having cashed out.

  • Mr. Fusion

While I like the first part of your post, I’m wondering about the second. CNN isn’t a bad outlet when you want something straight, without the bias. Yes, occasionally, they overkill on the balancing act, but generally, they are neutral. Since Olbermann left MSNBC, I haven’t watched more than 15 minutes total of the network.

Soon, this will be the only comment allowed on HP:

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/YVBA25ZZJYN5C44WGILY6P4X34 Raven

HP has been getting more and more harsh with censored comments over the past year. It has also been turning to more mindless mush garbage that has nothing to do with real news and open debate. If Sarah Palin farts it ends up on the front page there. There are too many other real news web sites out there for me to be wasting my time on HP’s mindless corporate chatter. The recent terror attack in Russia didn’t even make news there, even though it was a leading story on almost every other web site. One last tip from a former HP frequent commenter. Never ever say anything bad about Israel. No matter how nicely you word your criticism, your comment will not get posted or it will be deleted.

I too used to write on the Huffpo. But for months now, I have been elsewhere. Huffpo was part of the Comedy Central move to the center that was held in D.C. and detracted and deflected the strength of the true liberal march scheduled for the same month. I haven’t gone to Daily Show or Colbert or Huffpo hardly at all since.

It didn’t take the sellout to AOL to get it as to what was happening. Now that those guys are finished making their bucket of money, maybe we can go BACK to supporting some of the sites we almost killed off by going to HUFFPO?

LIKE BUZZFLASH. They had to team up with Truthout to remain alive because we quit going there.

Truthout is a good site with good video, which sites must have, and upgrading the Buzzflash site has not happened since they hooked up with Truthout. But Truthout still reads like DemocracyNow! (which I love) rather than a magazine like Huffpo.

So what we really need is a Buzzflash/Truthout/Rawstory/RealNews… coalition of sorts.

And we need to keep it Liberal… distinctly.

oh yes… I can’t possibly remember all the sites I have bookmarked…. I used the ones above to illustrate different approaches to the news rather than choose them specifically.

  • Anonymous

I could no longer get my comments uploaded, no foul language, no attacks, I’m just just real fed up with the way the Democrates have caved on every issue and believe it’s time to let them go to the people they have been pandering to for the last two (20?) years to get the money and votes they need to get re elected. I’m sure the rich conservatives and other assorted wingnuts will line up to help them out.

In some ways, CNN is the worst of the lot. It always presents “both sides”of the issue as if both sides are equally valid, and they themselves have no additional independent facts available to them, or any opinion on the matter. That’s not what journalists do. That’s not what a news organisation does. Global warming, for example, is too important an issue for “both sides are equally valid” kind of crap. Get some real climate scientists on. Debate the actual facts, not opposing points of views. Don’t want to write an entire essay here but our entire MSM is crap designed to make Americans uninformed, stupid and ignorant.

  • Mr. Fusion

I mostly agree. The only part of your post I would change is the word “debate” and use “discuss”. News shouldn’t be a debate to see who can make the best argument. I do believe that is what you are driving at.

    I can’t believe they’re still in business.

Oh Jeebus guys! HuffPo has been a hack site for years. The true progressive & lefty writers have been buried under a ton of woo and crap. If this is what it takes to get the good writers loose and publishing somewhere I’ll actually read again, I think it’s a good thing. AOL can pay millions for something that will be completely devalued by their owning it, and I’ll be highly amused. “We don’t see ourselves as left,” Huffington told Politico. What “we” are you talking about, rich lady?
