A Republican congressman from western New York announced his resignation Monday after a gossip website published a shirtless photo he sent to a woman who posted a Craigslist personal ad.

According to a report at Gawker, Rep. Chris Lee (R-NY) responded to an ad a 34-year-old woman posted to Craigslist’s “women seeking men” section, sending her pictures of himself and claiming to be a 39-year-old, divorced lobbyist. Lee is married with one child and is 46 years old.

Lee’s office confirmed to Gawker that it was his email address that was used to correspond with the woman.

“I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents,” Lee said in a statement circulated to the media. “I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”

Gawker reported that Lee responded quickly to a January 14 ad challenging “Craigslist men” to prove they don’t all “look like toads.”

Lee responded with a fully-dressed picture of himself and the comment, “I hope I’m not a toad.”

When the woman responded with “Are you sure that’s not a photo from a JCPenney ad?”, Lee responded with “Here … I just took one. I’m relaxing at home.” That message was accompanied with a photo of Lee topless in front of a mirror, flexing his right arm.

Gawker noted that the conversation was “relatively banal” but his “support for ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and vote to reject federal abortion funding suggests a certain comfort with publicly scrutinizing others’ sex lives.”

Lee was first elected to New York’s 26th congressional district, which includes parts of the suburbs of Buffalo and Rochester, in 2008. A special election to replace him hasn’t been called yet.

Another stupid criminal Republican thinking with the wrong head.

  • Anonymous

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell ha ha!
You can find almost anything on Craigslist if you search and wait long enough!

  • Anonymous

    ahahahahhahahahahahaaaa…..

  • Anonymous

Another family values candidate no doubt.

“Here … I just took one. I’m relaxing at home.” That message was accompanied with a photo of Lee topless in front of a mirror, flexing his right arm.”

My question, what was he doing with his left arm/hand in front of the mirror?

  • Anonymous

Evidently a decent, honest GOP isn’t one of those things that can be found on Craigslist.

  • Anonymous

This guy took over for tom reynolds who was at one time an insider and a rising star in the republican party. His failure to deal with mark foley lead to the beginning of his downfall. Now Lee comes home to Buffalo with his tail between his legs and someone else gets to try. I just hope the governor gets to appoint his successor so we can get a democrat in there. Buffalo doesn’t need another clown in that seat.

  • enorceht

proves the repugs feel they are above their “constituents” … next up will be boner and his “fraternizing” with lobbyists …

    The corruption is incessant.

  • BobSanDiego

Republican sex scandal fails to shock anymore, but the stupidity and the hypocrisy is always stunning. He’s only the first, with Boner up next.

  • Anonymous

Another good christian republican bites the dust due to lust and Ego! My My! The republicans sure are a horny lot aren’t they? I feel bad for his wife and kid, but by now there must be a a good christian republican wives, who have been screwed over by their lying bastard husbands, support group.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3ETFGMQ3B7VD4AAMILBBEVMCWE JasonA

A decent, honest GOP is not to be found..anywhere. It is a contradiction.

  • http://twitter.com/InYourFaceRadio In Your Face Radio

HEHE … He put the M .. in MORON

  • PrissyPatriot®

Why there are women who want to have sex with republicans is beyond me- I find republican men a repulsive lot. Agreed they should form a support group, but then they may figure out that refusing to put up with that kind of man makes you labeled the much feared “feminist”, even if you’re a good cook and mother LOL.

  • Anonymous

The comments are to funny and so right. I really can’t stop laughing but I will agree Boner is next as he’s on the prowl with his new title and extra spending money given by taxpayers. Wonder who else will join the resign team bet all this will be blamed on Obama.

  • http://biscuits007.wordpress.com/ skulzwerks design studios

Seems that Lee put the dumb ass in moron. WTF was this fool thinking? Wait a minute, Lee must think he’s “special” and might not EVER get caught. Oh yeah…

Apparently the congressman got the memo too late. You know the talking points memo that says Republicans are the party of family values, Christianity and principles.

    Bad move, Booboo. Bad move.

  • Anonymous

What a dumbass. He should have followed precedent and just opened up a gay brothel out of his DC townhouse. Had he done that, all would have been good!

  • Anonymous

Typical Republican… even screwed up at having an affair. His wife must be ashamed to be married to such a failure.

  • Anonymous

Anyone remember some guy named, um, Clinton? Oh wait…he didn’t resign! I guess getting blow jobs in the oval office with an intern isn’t quite as bad as sending pictures to some chick on CL. Yeah…that’s it.

  • I. M. Agoste

    Idjit.

  • Anonymous

Oh, THAT makes it okay, then. One bad example doesn’t excuse his actions. You can bet this wasn’t the first time something happened. It’s just the first time someone ratted him out. And you can bet that if this WAS the only thing he’s done, he wouldn’t be leaving. There is something bigger still and he doesn’t want anyone looking around to find out what that might be. He’s leaving before the REAL shit can hit the fan.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZJOV5K2ZXCJRHWALX3I6CT2U6U Toujoursdan

What kind of moran [sic] uses his real name and the email address linked to his Facebook account to troll for extramarital sex on Craigslist? That is some world class stupid.

  • Anonymous

Hypocrisy 101 is never a good way to run one’s life. This “family’s values” republican should resign because he doesn’t have enough guts to divorce his wife, tell the truth to the other woman nor his constituents or to stick it out. He’s a wimp in all caps! I bet he voted for the Iraq war too.

  • PrissyPatriot®

We remember and didn’t like it or the mess the media made over it and Ken Star drooling “then what happened, Mr President”. But he didn’t advertise to get it…

  • Anonymous

    Rep. Chris Lie (toRy-NudeYikes)

Since you tories are so fond of out-sourcing, maybe we ought to try bringing in some politicians from other countries at cheaper rates to take your place. I know they could do a better job than what they are throwing at us now a days.

  • Anonymous

    Gotta love those “family values!”
What is really great is that now he will forever be known as “The Craigslist Congressman.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/rmorganhazard Bob Hazard

Yeah, and I remember how you republicans got all high and mighty about it. This is the standard you idiots set. You and Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig, David Vitter, John Ensign, Joe Allen….

Now let me get this straight this “jerkwad goes on “Craigslist trying set up a little side action and his “old lady bust him as well as the chick he’s trying to score with. Also he uses his real name and e-mail. Do I have this right so far????? All my life I have always considered Rethuglicans to NOT BE particularly bright but this A$$hole is in a class all by himself and after all this he never got laid.

This is a new email going around, purportedly from a DC airline ticket agent who deals with Members of Congress and other elected officials a lot. It’s clearly a joke, but honestly, can’t you imagine most of this being said WORD FOR WORD by some most of these idiots.

A DC ‘airport ticket agent’ offers some examples of ‘WHY’ our country is in trouble!

    1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman (Carol Shea-Porter) ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn’t get messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!)
    2. I got a call from a Kansas Congressman’s (Moore) staffer (Howard Bauleke), who wanted to go to Cape Town. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information, and then he interrupted me with, ”I’m not trying to make you look stupid, but Cape Town is in Massachusetts ..”
Without trying to make him look stupid, I calmly explained, ”Cape Cod is in Massachusetts , Cape Town is in South Africa .”
    His response — click..
    3. A senior Vermont Congressman (Bernie Sanders) called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando . He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state.

He replied, ‘Don’t lie to me!, I looked on the map, and Florida is a very THIN state!!” (OMG)
    4. I got a call from a lawmaker’s wife (Landra Reid) who asked, ”Is it possible to see England from Canada ?”

    I said, ”No.”

She said, ”But they look so close on the map” (OMG, again!)
    5. An aide for a cabinet member (Janet Napolitano) once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas .. I pulled up the reservation and noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas … When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, ”I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to drive between gates to save time.” (Aghhhh)
    6. An Illinois Congresswoman (Jan Schakowsky) called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:30 a.m., and got to Chicago at 8:33 a.m.

I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois , but she couldn’t understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went fast, and she bought that.
    7. A New York lawmaker, (Jerrold Nadler) called and asked, ”Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?” I said, ‘No, why do you ask?’

He replied, ”Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I’m overweight. I think that’s very rude!”

After putting him on hold for a minute, while I looked into it. (I was dying laughing). I came back and explained the city code for Fresno , Ca. is (FAT – Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline was just putting a destination tag on his luggage..
    8. A Senator John Kerry aide (Lindsay Ross) called to inquire about a trip package to Hawaii . After going over all the cost info, she asked, ”Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii ?”
    9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman, Bobby Bright from Ala who asked, ”How do I know which plane to get on?”

I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, ”I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these planes have numbers on them.”
10 Senator Claire McCaskill called and said, ”I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola , Florida . Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?”

I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola and fly on a commuter plane.

She said, ”Yeah, whatever, I told everyone on Tweeter I was going there, so now I have to go and you have to get me there!”
11 Mary Landrieu, La. Senator, called and had a question about the documents she needed in order to fly to China . After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded her that she needed a visa. “Oh, no I don’t. I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those.”

I double checked and sure enough, her stay required a visa. When I told her this she said, ”Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!”
12 A New Jersey Congressman (John Adler) called to make reservations, ”I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York .”

I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, ”Are you sure that’s the name of the town?”

‘Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the man.

After some searching, I came back with, ”I’m sorry, sir, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a rhino anywhere.”

”The man retorted, ”Oh, don’t be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!”

So I scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, ”You don’t mean Buffalo , do you?”

The reply? ”Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.”

Now you know why the Government is in the shape it’s in!

  • LeftCoastLeftie

And the whole time the self-righteous Retardlicans on the panel were all f*cking their clerks and aides and maybe even a few small boys, while trying to make a spectacle of the President. And jerking off to the testimony.

  • LeftCoastLeftie

Actually, according to the article, he didn’t get his tail after all.

ReslugliCONs know how to fuck the taxpayers, but they can’t get laid. If George Soros was really the evildoer the dittoheads say he is, he’d have platoons of people following every reslugliCON and teagagger to expose stuff like this. George, are you reading this?

I wonder if Fox put a (D) next to his name and then retract it and then say a new intern accidentally screwed up?

  • LeftCoastLeftie

What a total moran – didn’t he read the REpukelican Manual that says, “if caught in a compromising situation, immediately hold a press conference (with you spouse at your side) and proclaim that you must have slipped, but fortunately you confessed to your god and your spouse, and they’re okay with it, so i will continue to serve my constituents by doing what they told me they wanted, which was to bring down the Marxist-Socialist-Kenyan President who is not like us.”

Remind the crowd that Bill CLinton did the same thing, as did every Democrat member of Congress from the beginning of our Union.

Wait, let me get this straight. A Republican seeking consensual sex with an adult woman… is there a scandal here?

  • Anonymous

Go to Gawker and read his emails. It’s a little bit more than “just a picture.” He was trying to get laid and he’s a married “family values” Republican politician, not a “divorced lobbyist.” He’s also not 39 and his hair’s no longer blond, it’s mostly gray. It was pretty dumb of him to use his real name and an email address associated with his personal Facebook account.

  • Anonymous

Not a chance in the world are any of these stories true. Take my advice: don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.

  • Anonymous

Hard to say. Lawrence O’Donnell was quoting from his resignation statement referring to his use of “actions” and saying he probably didn’t resign because of a picture, especially with people like vitter still in office. Dana Millbank concurred there’s likely more to it, but lee has bowed out at record speed to make the press go away.

  • Anonymous

Liar, cheat, total dumb-ass. In other words, another poster child for all the “family values” Republicans!

Just once I would love to see the guy show up with scratch marks across his cheeks and at least one black eye. I thought spitzer’s wife was the girl to do it, but she just stood there and glared at him.

  • Mr. Neutron

Actually, his first day as a US Representative was January 3, 2009 – although Republicans criticize Obama for needing more than two years to fix the mess Bush made, Republican Representatives take about two years just to figure out the floor plan for the US Capitol building and decorate their new offices:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Lee_(politician)

Then they get down to the business of being corrupt and seeking out sex.

  • Anonymous

How about the memo saying don’t use your own name when you’re married and still trolling for chicks?

  • Anonymous

He’s in the House and only beginning his second term. He’s in reynold’s seat and he DID vote for the war. Lee would have if he’d been sitting there- he’s a republican values kind of guy.

  • Randy Culpepper

Well….he voted in favor of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and he believed in limiting abortion rights, so obviously he doesn’t believe that a person’s sex life is private.

  • Dolmance

Republican Vitter was caught defecating on a woman who he wasn’t married to. The man apologized profusely and the GOP was more than happy to take him back. Hell, they never sent him away. So this guy resigning seems a bit over the top, actually.

In any case, I assume Vitter has learned his lesson and will only defecate on his spouse now. This is good. This is as God intended things. It’s not Adam and Steve who should be defecating on each other. It’s Adam and Eve who should be defecating on each other.

    Peace… God bless…

  • Taleisin

    If they can resign over something as weak as this, why don’t they resign over important things;
like robbing the poor and giving to the rich, or 2 unwinnable wars, or refusing to care for returned soldiers, or torture….. You know the rest.
Anyway, I guess that stuff isn’t important.

He should also appear on the DC Madam’s list of customers and have a wife who shows up at this apologetic press conference in a leopard skin dress. The best part of this story is that he, once again, proved the adage ‘whatever a Republican disses the most or the loudest is what he is doing’.
    ——– /quoted below/——-
He wrote a 2009 editorial for The Tonawanda News lauding legislation he helped pass that warned kids about online dangers. Lee championed the Student Internet Safety Act, which aimed to “educate students about appropriate online behavior, protect them from online predators and promote the involvement of parents in Internet usage”—all lessons Lee perhaps should have taken to heart.

Yes, you are right republicans have no shame. To answer your SS question, yes it is secure, but no matter what anyone says you would not believe it. You probably also think losing almost 60,000 men and women in Viet Nam was a okay because we were fighting against communism.

You, I assume, are an adult and know that adults like to have sex. Clinton and his wife have some sort of arrangement, he is known to have “gotten around” as the young people say. Its so funny that whenever a Repub gets caught doing some hanky-panky, the only thing Regressives can bring up to counter it is something that happened 30 years ago. Its the same line they used for Larry Craig, for Mark Foley, for David Vitter, for Newt etc.
Talk about living in the past!!

I suggest the Rethugli-CONS should try the morgue and while they are there, have the pathologists hang a tag on their toes, shove’m in a refrigeratated box car and send them to Mexico since they love sending American jobs down to bean bandit and Tequilla country.

A psychologist I once worked with told me the same personality traits that make people want to be politicians also make them likely to be philanderers. I suspect the tendency is also somewhat greater among Republicans because the party they’ve chosen attracts individuals who are less socially responsible in other ways as well.

  • Pollgera

I’m waiting to hear that his wife – the one he claimed he was divorced from – FILES for divorce. Please oh please prove to me that she has that much self-respect as to kick his sorry @ss out permanently.

  • Anonymous

HAHAHAHAHA!!! OK, I probably shouldn’t be enjoying this so much, but he’s all up in wimmin’s business about their bodily privacy and then thinks he can get away with being a horndog? Talk about stupid! Hopefully, his wife gets to keep the kids, the house, and most of his bank account. What a schmuck!

  • Anonymous

Had he “succeed” at the extra marital affair, he could still be in office like other GOP.

  • Anonymous

Buying an expensive car you don’t really need doesn’t hurt anybody except maybe your bank account. Lying to strange women about your marital status and availability is for sure going to hurt your wife, your kids, any strange women still hanging around, and yourself. I’m going with red sports car, myself.

Yeah, wasn’t that just delightful? Here’s this weasel supporting DADT and in his spare time, he’s hitting on women outside of his sanctified, sacred HETEROSEXUAL marriage.

  • Anonymous

Gee, so now it’s Barney Frank’s fault some straight pig can’t keep it in his pants? Methinks thou doth protest too much, lad. It’s OK to be gay.

  • Anonymous

Pretty useless when you’ve got whiskey dick. Maybe that’s the real reason he cries so damned much.

  • Anonymous

Supports DADT; tries to keep poor women from having abortions; writes pious-sounding platitudes about Keeping Are Children Sayf From InnerNetz Predators; and preaches “Fambly Valyooz.” Oh, yeah, and sends semi-nekky pikkies of himself to strange women in the hope of a little extramarital slap-and-tickle.

  • Anonymous

Wow, that is … pretty disgusting. But this guy is probably resigning to prevent a lot more serious stuff from seeing the light of day. No Republican ever resigns because of a sex scandal. There’s gotta be more.

  • Anonymous

Only if he spends his time trumpeting his “fambly valyooz,” supporting DADT (despite its repeal), and sticking his nose into the skirts and private business of poor women. Oh, look, he does all three! Case closed!

  • Anonymous

He’s sorry because he got caught.

At least he didn’t pull a Favre and send a picture of his weenie and at least this hypocrite “family values” RethugliKlan is resigning from the get-go unlike Craig, Vitter, Sandford, Ensign, etc.

Oh I don’t think Lisbeth Lyons would agree with you there, but then again some people have bizarre ideas about what constitutes sex — Senator Diaperman Vitter comes to mind. (Ugh – i just threw up in my tea)

OK — the Republican adulterer was caught this time. But, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. I would guess that this wasn’t his first time using Craiglist for his extra marital horn dogging.

No shame. No apology. No guilt (until he met his maker. May he rest in peace)

Forget parties and look at the lies. SS is secure only if you want worthless paper that Bernanke and co. print in the basement. SS says there’s no inflation. Do you believe that too? So no hikes in 2011.

Get over the party hearty and look at the facts. Hayek was right, the worst have risen to the top in both parties. The Tea Party is already getting stiffed in DC, and the country is tanking in debt and war.

  • Anonymous

Christians know we are sinners. It is shameful, to be sure, that we are not perfect – but the shame is ours. That’s why we are so grateful for the saving grace of Christ, and His promise of salvation to all those who follow Him — every one of us sinners. I think Frank is Jewish and I don’t know about Studds. May God have mercy on them and all of us.

  • Anonymous

Nope you’re wrong. He did not rape an underage male page, the page was 17 at the time when age of consent was 16. The young man consented to the sexual relations and willingly agreed to continue the relationship. While it may not have been a good judgment call, it certainly was not illegal. And as I stated before IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO! Wake up old man, its 2011. Time to stop living in the past.
As far as Studds giving the House the bird. Never happened. Just another lie the Regressives like to tell because they have no facts to stand on. Another lie you told is that he didnt apologize. He did, what he did’nt apologize was for being gay, and he shouldn’t have to. It is interesting that whenever Regressives bring up Studds, they never mention Daniel Crane, a Republican who was censured for having sex with a 17 year old female page. Somehow that gets lost in the Regressive memory hole.

    You lose.

CORRECTION The Studds affair with the page happened in 1973. ALMOST 40 YEARS AGO, and you sad stuck in past old timers are still whining about it! GET OVER IT!!!!

He is a social conservative, family values GOP Teapublican that was trolling around craigslist looking to have an illicit affair with an anonymous stranger (Female of course- he is a conservative GOP’er). It is in both the constitution and the new Testament- IOKIYAAR. I thought that this was common practice in the GOP.

I guess because the person wasn’t a prostitute or a lobbyist makes the difference.

Or maybe (shudder) she was a DEMOCRAT!!!! The horror, the horror!!!!

What exactly was Hayek right about?

  • Anonymous

One story I read, maybe at HuffPo, said Boehner had already warned this guy about his partying. So evidently this wasn’t his first foray into extramarital affairs. It might also be the case that one of his other paramours, as some have speculated elsewhere, was ready to drop the other shoe. So in order to insure that the rest of his sordid history didn’t hit the media he decided to cut his political career short. I think this is more than likely the story here. He didn’t quite over the picture or this incident–this was the tip of a much larger iceberg.

He’s a Republican in Congress, does anyone know what they do? They only work from what Wednesday noon until sometime Thursday evening.

They have shorter work weeks than most people have weekends. Doesn’t anyone else remember how they squalled when Nancy Pelosi said they were going to work from Monday noon to Thursday. There were several major stories about all the whining the Republicans were doing. They started crying about her taking them away from their families, it was hilarious. Three day weekends were intolerable!

Wasn’t Jeff Guckart, aka Jeff Gannon, running one out of the Bush White House for a time–did you have any trouble with that Chris?

In a short, brilliant chapter in The Road To Serfdom, Hayek described how, as governments decline into tyranny (something well-known since Aristotle), “the worst rise to the top.” The good people no longer want anything to do with the entire sordid affair. Sure, some (like today) stay on because of the benefits, the lack of demanding work, ennui, they can’t be fired — but those are the munchkins, and they stay bribed. The people on top are ever more brazenly driven by the lust for power and are squalid sorts, and Hayek explains that they are the only ones left who want to be there. The good folks have all said to Hell with it.

It’s worth reading in its brief entirety.

  • Anonymous

I have read “The Road to Serdom” (1944) and the much longer “Constitution of Liberty” (1960) and I didn’t think that Hayek was “right” about anything. My impression on a first reading, was that he was just another disingenuous free market right wing fool who equated money with freedom–a particularly virulent idea that not only has infected the current Supreme Court but has produced an insidious continuing and seemingly unstoppable aggregation of power at the top of the economic ladder in this country that has crippled the economy and left devastation, homelessness, hunger, starvation and serious economic distress in its wake. That you think he was right about anything is sad and says more about you to me than you can even imagine.

  • Anonymous

Hayek is an advocate of economic freedom, to be sure, where the opposite of wealth (money) is poverty. As far as economies go, they should produce and promote production, rather than not produce, and promote poverty, illness, and death.

However, a lot of libertarians I know believe that freedom means economic liberty and nothing else, and I disagree. There is a moral sphere, including the common good, reflected in the Declaration’s recognition of the “laws of nature and of nature’s God” as the founation of our liberties. And happiness is not the enjoyment of material goods, but the pursuit of true liberty and ultimate happiness – salvation.

But that was then, in a culture that Tocquevilled acknowledges as a religious one that celebrated a common sense of the good, from religion to ethnicity to culture. Those days are over, and thus the liberties of earlier days have indeed been diminished. Robert Nisbet once commented that in 1913, the year of his birth, the only contact the average American had with this federal government was the Post Office.

But it is not because of Hayek’s economic liberty that favored corporations and other powerful interest groups (unions, etc.) have prospered while the common man takes on a third job. It is because government has become fascist (bipartisan, please, neither party is innocent). In the 1930s, the American Left saw much to be admired in both the early days of Hitler and Mussolini with regard to the cooperation of government with industry. Hayek condemned that demon both here and there. Washington lobbyists are everywhere, creating preferences for their clients that are, by definition, damaging to the rest of us. They print money, hand it to their pals, who spend it quickly while it reatins its original value. As it devalues, it works its way down to the hoi polloi, who are destroyed because of the government lies about inflation (it’s actually 15% or so), and especially damaging to the poor and those on fixed incomes.

Hayek condones none of this. He does point to a morality outside of economics when he observes the power of the libido dominandi – the lust for power which, unlike greed, never gets mentioned as a vice in Washington because everybody seems to suffer from it.

The notion of “good people” getting into politics is all fine and dandy, but there they encounter Hayek’s sad fact – the worst have risen to the top, and one has to deal with them all day, and it is, for the good person, like the piano player in the bordello — not a happy circumstance even for the virtuous.

The same goes for business, alas, where the notion of serving the common good takers a back seat when the lobbyists hit the Hart Building looking for preferential treatment and privileges.

Now arises the ultimate question: if true liberty were restored, and Americans were told, “ten percent tax rates, tops. Run your own lives, because we’re firing 90% of the bureaucracy and ending 90% of the entitlements. Make your own way, keep your own money, no government favors any more to anyone, we’ll defend the borders and otherwise we’ll stay out of your lives.”

Is the country ready? Can the businesses in the trough survive? How about the 40 million on food stamps and the 40 million on free breakfast, lunch, and dinner snacks at public schools?

Are we really ready for freedom?
