Report claims Chamber hired firm hacked by ‘Anonymous’

WASHINGTON – Lobbyists for the US Chamber of Commerce have been working with firms to develop methods to deceive and discredit the Chamber’s most vocal progressive opponents, according to documents obtained by ThinkProgress.

Lee Fang of the liberal blog reports that the Chamber and its hired firms mapped ways to attack labor and progressive groups that have taken on the powerful business lobby, “in particular ThinkProgress, the labor coalition called Change to Win, the SEIU, US Chamber Watch, and StopTheChamber.com.”

In one document prepared by a group called Themis, US Chamber Watch is singled out as “one of the most active members of the opposition.” It notes that the Chamber, unlike many of its critics, is “politically connected,” making its opponents “vulnerable to information operations that could embarrass the organization and those associated with it.”

A six-point plan to discredit the US Chamber Watch includes depicting it as a pawn of labor federation Change to Win, and tying it to labor leader Andy Stern and Velvet Revolution. It also proposes swindling the group by creating “a false document” about the Chamber’s finances and, once it’s publicized, providing “explicit evidence proving that such transactions never occurred.”

“Also,” it continues, “create a fake insider persona and generate communications with CtW. Afterward, release the actual documents at a specified time and explain the activity as a CtW contrived operation. Both instances will prove that US Chamber Watch cannot be trusted with information and/or tell the truth.”

ThinkProgress reports that the Chamber hired lobbying firm Hunton and Williams and a set of private security companies — HB Gary Federal, Palantir, Berico Technologies –  three of which apparently comprise “Team Themis.”

A Team Themis document said Phase I of the plan to “collect, analyze, and affect adversarial entities and networks of interest” would cost $200,000, and Phase II would cost $2 million.

The Chamber denied any knowledge of “the document” — though it didn’t say which one — and claimed it didn’t hire the security firm that created it.

“The security firm referenced by ThinkProgress was not hired by the Chamber or by anyone else on the Chamber’s behalf. We have never seen the document in question nor has it ever been discussed with us,” wrote Tom Collamore on the Chamber’s website.

Oddly enough, two of the security firms the Chamber is said to have hired — HB Gary and Palantir — made news recently after they were revealed to have devised tactics for Bank of America to discredit the anti-secrecy outlet WikiLeaks.

HB Gary was recently hacked by the cyber-protest group “Anonymous,” which published some 44,000 of its emails on the Internet.

I’ve hated the US Camber of Commerce for a long time…and I still do. Check out the Yes Men video where they hold a fake USCOC press conference announcing their recognition of the need to take action on climate change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QHKcrAfjFw

COC – another rabid arm of the GOP, and designed for the same purpose, to destroy the middle class and remove all protections for the American worker. A task at which they are succeeding primarily because of the incredibly ignorant people who keep voting for them and AGAINST their own best interests. Amazing.

  • Anonymous

These tactics are just plain comical. They’re fighting a losing battle using old world strategies. The media is the message. The internet enables free flow of information. The truth will set us free.

  • Anonymous

According the the COC, work will set us free.

How can an organization with no credibility discredit anyone?

Answer: by hiding their true identity, as codified by the Citizens’ United Supreme Court case.

Yet another heavy blow to freedom by the fascist Benito and his co-conspirators Rastus, Stringbean, Red, and Biff.

Correction: work will set the Chinese free. Us, we have no work, nor are we going to get any in the coming reprise of a “jobless recovery.”

We need to stop calling anything that’s jobless a recovery. The media should report the continual outsized profits garnered via Third World wages and benefits as what it is: the continued collection of wealth upward by harvesting the poorest of the poor who’ll settle for the least, not a fucking recovery.

But the press works for business, not us. Every paper has a “Business” section, but none has a “Worker” section. Of course not! Why would they? They’re just the people who buy their papers, that’s all.

The Chamber of Horrors is one of the top terrorist-tory group in america. Every factory, manufacturer in america would be based either in china, india and their mail box would be in the cayman islands. America would become a homeless shelter with a holey tin roof covering our asses that stretches from the left coast to the right coast if these bastards continue untouched.

“It also proposes swindling the group by creating ‘a false document’ about the Chamber’s finances and, once it’s publicized, providing “explicit evidence proving that such transactions never occurred.”

This is the same ploy that was used to discredit CBS and Dan Rather when they were pursuing the story of how George Bush avoided Viet Nam by joining the Texas ANG, proceeding to fail to keep his flight status current, and eventually avoiding even completing his required service. The records given to Mapes were accurate in content but not in form (the type font was different). As soon as the show ran on 60 Minutes, someone revealed the difference and the rest is history. Very successful in that it took down Rather and created a smokescreen that prevented the truth from coming out of Bush’s use of favoritism to join the Guard and avoid Viet Nam as well as his failure to complete his required service.

Just another example of someone in the corporate world trying to suppress truth. When will the rest of the country realize that the corporate world is corrupt, anti-democratic and anti-American?

  • Ed Dominguez

The US Chamber is pro jobs as long as the labor is done overseas. This chamber is the most anti labor force around. Its funny how they have no problem that Canada, China, and most of the world has free health care. The chamber promotes jobs going overseas, lose a finger on the job overseas never see a bill, here job related finger loss workers comp pays, heaven forbid these ceo’s have to pay into workers comp. Labor cost is not the reason they leave the US, the ceo’s do not like the safety rules they have to follow, #1 biggest cost to these company’s.

And people wonder why we need Wikileaks and the Anonymous group. Instead of calling them hackers and terrorists, we should give them a badge and call them internet police. They are stopping crimes with truth. And if the Chamber of Commerce truly is trying to go after bloggers with smears instead of trying to counter their arguments with truth, then they deserve to be hacked and their documents exposed.

If I were a business member and gauging the pitiful credentials of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, it’s aloof behavior and sounding like a Fox News retard, not only would I distance myself and my business from these charlatans, I would tell them: “I want my money back”!! Your not a promoter, your a “grifter”.

There is no honest factual news or information in America, only oligarch propoganda. They tighten the noose every day. Extending the Patriot Act, funding Blackwater, blocking net neutrality. The mother ship was sited over Jerusalem last week and went virtually unreported. We were their slaves and have always been their puppets. The aliens will soon end the charade reassert formal slavery.

  • Fedupin10

Exactly right. It was Evil Brilliance to provide an exact re-creation of the documents, facts and all, but re-typed with equipment that did not exist at the time. In this way not only could they deny the document, but all the facts it contained as well.

After they shot down Rather, we never heard about Bush’s AWOL again.

Large parts of the business community are your enemy.

The “Chamber” proves this. The scumbags that hire MILLIONS of illegal immigrant scabs prove this. The war on unions that business started back when Raygun took office prove this.

    Know who your enemy is.

  • ThatBostonMan

Funny, everybody thought I was joking about the gang stalking “cyber vigilante” stuff.

Like I said, the more the news comes out the more you’ll learn. Yes the US Chamber did hire professional cyber bullies (hackers) to stalk and discredit. And what is worse is you can expect to find that all the big corporations are hiring hackers to do this. It’s not just the US Chamber.

  • http://twitter.com/bujeeboo Sonya Lee

If you own a business and are a Progressive, I hope you do what my husband and I did and drop your local Chamber of Commerce membership. True, the chapters are not the same as the National Chamber, but apparently the Chapters are starting to exert pressure on the National chapter and begging them to knock off the political stuff. It is working.

  • ThatBostonMan

It’s not that simple. It’s more that a few CEOs within the business community have decided that the law isn’t as important as the bottom line. Those CEOs are your enemy. The CEO’s who follow the law are your friend.

If CEO’s of corporations are paying black hats to break the law by hacking into your computer to find dirt on you, or entrap you via child porn and get your door kicked in, damn right the CEO of whoever is behind that is your enemy.

The black hats can be your friend, they are just doing the job they were told to do under pressure.

The white hats can be your friend, but they do a job too as security researchers.

The person who sat in an office somewhere who decided you should be “discredited”, thats the one you should focus on. Leave the cyber soldiers alone as the cyber soldiers didn’t plan any of this and just received the orders.

  • ThatBostonMan

Wikileaks I don’t have much trust in. Anonymous on the other hand has proven me wrong as they actually for once have accomplished something. They helped the Egyptian revolution and Raw Story should do a front page article on that. And they actually launched a real professional counter attack against HBGary federal which was impressive.

There are many undeclared wars in America right now, a war for corporate take over of washington dc, which by all means looks like it is winning or has already won as this president is allowing the bullies to bully without a fight at every turn, a war by big energy to keep out new totally sustainable tech that would make their fossil fuels become once again almost extinct, a banking industry that is in cahoots with the fed to run a ponzi scheme on the US taxpayer, on, and on, people had better wake up, the red coats are here, the red coats are here ……

Many, many small businessmen in construction, landscaping, restaurants and factories have hired the 20 million illegal immigrant scabs in this country. You couldn’t employ than many illegals if lots of businessmen were not hiring them.

They are economic traitors and it’s not just a few bad apples.

The U.S. Chamber has had a long time goal of reducing the U.S. working people to a level where the working people are begging for a job and making no demands. When Nixon was running for his second term the Chamber endorsed him because his platform was close to meeting their goal. The exportation of U.S. jobs will end when we are willing to work at the same level as undocumented workers do.

  • Anonymous

The U.S.Camber has had a long time goal of diminishing the American worker to a level where they are begging for a job rather than expressing what they desire. The exportation of American jobs will probably end when we are willing to work under the same conditions as the undocumented and third world workers of today are experiencing.

Richard Nixon received the endorsement of the Chamber in his 1972 bid for reelection because his campaign platform was in agreement with their goals. Their goal is unchanged.

We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. Sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. “and went virtually unreported.” Really? You couldn’t escape that story! Perhaps if you were living under a rock with no internet access, you missed that story.

Perhaps you’re disappointed that it wasn’t treated as “an event” but rather what it was, literally: Videos posted by un-named person or persons. Unverifiable, easy to fake (ooooh, they added a light to videos from two separate cameras… ohhhh… no human could possibly do that!) And not treated as a real event rightly so…. it has been shown, beyond any doubt, that the ‘camera shake’ is added post filming.

I love it when corporate espionage against citizens gets pantsed in public. There are so many people who believe this sh&t never happens,,,because they didn’t see it covered on Fox…so it doesn’t exist. Fact is, it does exist…and manipulation against advocacy groups is at an all time high, this time by private sector instead of just law enforcement groups. What separates our era from the era of 60s and 70s counter culture is that think tanks and corps are doing their own dirty work instead of just letting the FBI and CIA do it on their own. Interestingly, this makes it a more viable fight…as long as your conscious of it happening. Crucif*ck these bastards with the evidence of their own crimes.

I have never had any dealings with the CoC, but I once owned a store in a town where the local chapter was very active. One day, the owner of the restaurant two doors up from us hosted a free luncheon for the Chamber and hundreds of business owners and their friends showed up for the free eats. I didn’t attend because I wasn’t a member, but later on I talked to the owner and one of his waitresses. He said they brought several times the number of people they had promised and he lost his shirt on all the food he had to provide, and he would never do another thing for the Chamber again. She told me that only one person, out of all those rich people who ate the free food, had left a tip. After that, we started calling them “The Chamber of Horrors.”

You’re right, for the most part. Here’s the deal with Blago. He actually had the guts to raise the minimum wage, and he wasn’t afraid to demand Walmart cut their bullshit. I supported that. Now I ask, could Citizens United and the Chamber of Horrors be teamed up using electronic harassment techniques on targeted individuals? Are you microwaving your neighbor?

If so why isn’t this domestic terrorism?

Or is it that the (false science) DSM-IV-TR is used to make people who point such things out into mental patients. The reality is the bastardized law enforcement, won’t admit invisible physics and electronics are exploited to spy and even cause pain, torture and death and it’s really tough to prove such things while at the same time being forced to undergo psych eval so they can lock you up on the funny farm for the rest of your life.

You couldn’t hire that many illegals if Americans wanted the jobs they take. I know, This economic traitor has hired many. And at wages of $15-$30 an hour. This probably doesn’t match your world view but it is a fact.

I’m just telling you the truth, but “you can’t handle the truth” This is not cheap labor, as I said fifteen to thirty dollars an hour. We do construction in Philadelphia of townhouses with a mostly Brazilian workforce. They are honest and work hard and we have not had any success with hiring local people for construction in Phila.. Most do not like physical labor and drop out quickly. This is not something new, much of the discussion on immigrant jobs has centered on the fact that Americans don’t want certain jobs, this is true.

If people are walking away from $30 an hour construction jobs it is because the boss is a complete abusive asshole. Sorry to burst your bubble but I know plenty of white, American construction workers who would b e happy to work for that. Of course I have seen a lot of bosses who shout out $15 to $30 an hour, actually pay $10/ hour and you have to fight them for that. They claim the remainder is benefits or count their unemployment insurance and FICA payments as wage. That dog don’t hunt.

Thirty was our most experienced carpenter. At this stage in the economy we are obviously doing less building but $15 is the lowest we pay, no one in the city can survive on much less. I imagine you are not in a large city. We do not take wages out for fica and unemployment insurance. We have not done well with american workers, one took a job at depot part time and was napping and sneaking off site. Another stole tools ($4000 + worth) from a site. It seems like the brazilians are the only ones who will show up day after day and do their job. We are not alone, I heard a radio interview on NPR with a builder in the midwest who said his workforce was mostly immigrant. American workers do not seem to want blue collar jobs. One last detail, for three years I had my lawn mowed by a former contractor (it was not cheap) who just didn’t show up on the fourth year after hemming and hawing about it. Who mows it now? The mexican man who saw the grass looked a little long and came to the door and asked if he could do the job. I would think a local kid would want to mow but could find none. A lot of americans consider manual labor beneath them, especially college educated workers, and it seems immigrants do not.
