The US House of Representatives voted Thursday night to clear the road for an extension of controversial provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act.

The final vote was 248 to 176, largely along party lines. Just 4 Republicans voted against the extension, while only 15 Democrats voted for it.

Under the House bill, the act would be extended until Dec. 8. A vote was planned for Monday.

Democrats protested a Republican plan to hold the vote under the “closed rule,” which prevented amendments.

The last PATRIOT Act extension was passed in Feb. 2010.

Thursday’s House vote paved the way for a second ballot on the PATRIOT Act, allowing it to clear the chamber with a simple majority. An earlier vote failed when it did not obtain a two thirds majority.

The Wednesday vote was 23 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass it under a procedure that allows bills that aren’t controversial to pass quickly.

When the act was first signed into law, Congress put in some “sunset” provisions to quiet the concerns of civil libertarians, but they were ignored by successive extensions. Unfortunately, those concerns proved to be well founded, and a 2008 Justice Department report confirmed that the FBI regularly abused their ability to obtain personal records of Americans without a warrant.

The only real sign of strong opposition to the act was in 2005, when a Democratic threat to filibuster its first renewal was overcome by Senate Republicans.

The Obama administration had called for the act to be extended for three years, two years longer than Republicans were seeking.

As a US Senator and candidate for the presidency, Barack Obama never actually argued for a repeal of the Bush administration’s security initiatives. Instead, he’s consistently argued for enhanced judicial oversight and a pullback on the most extreme elements of the bill, such as the use of National Security Letters to search people’s personal records without a court-issued warrant.

A prior version of this article said the House had passed the PATRIOT Act extension.

The late night vote designed to hide their criminal acts from the people, it’s no surprise are leaders are selling us out again for the corporate masters they work for. Our once proud nation is a mere shadow of it’s past greatness.

My capacity for outrage gets tested on a daily basis. Where is the goddamn public outcry about shit like this? The fucking sheeple almost piss me off more than the fucking politicians. Its up to us that are awake to awaken those around us. Lets all commit to speaking about this to at least 10 of our friends/acquaintances. I hate email spam from friends also but this deserves to be emailed to all on in your address book. We exist in the modern day equivalent of early Nazi Germany, and remember what they became. The really, really fucked thing is that the US is not the only nation running down this path. It includes most of the European nations as well. The only solution to this is going to be whats going on in Egypt now.

Poor Barry. He didn’t get the extension to 2013 he was asking for. Or the permanent extension he really wants, as he continues to make a mockery of the term, “Constitutional Scholar.” Phony assed jerk.

  • CozmicSeer

Notice how when they don’t get their way, they just keep introducing the bill until it gets passed. But if it’s something that actually does good for the country, then it gets voted down and dropped and doesn’t see light for a long time, if ever. These people seem hellbent on destroying our country, one bill at a time. What do you think the founding fathers would have to say about this government and what we should do about it?

The Patriot Act……………Ha ha ha ha ha. There are no patriots, except for missiles named “Patriots “. And I think we used one to shoot down a Brit airplane, “Brits furious at ‘friendly fire’ deaths”….

Ah, so the Republicans are content to make “special rules” when they hold a majority, rules that only need a majority vote to pass. But the Dems wouldn’t clean up the filibuster for 3 years and let the Republicans dictate direction even though they didn’t control even ONE branch of government?

And the Dem leadership wonders why the public doesn’t support them more.. The answer, of course, is the Two Party Lie and the Dems almost got totally nailed on it (thanks to Dean giving them all 3 branches of government.. that’s why he got canned, he was too good at his job and almost blew the cover the Plutes hide behind).

Instead you are going to vote for half assed half measures in either direction. You KNOW Republicans and Democrats are both frauds. Cross-referencing the list at MSNBC and the outcome of the vote, the following is a list of Tea Party-backed candidates voting for the bill (Patriot Act reauthorization):

Tim Griffin (AR-2), Paul Gosar (AZ-1), Steve Southerland (FL-2), Allen West (FL-22), Sandy Adams (FL-24), Bob Dold (IL-10), Adam Kinzinger (IL-11), Marlin Stutzman (IN-3), Todd Young (IN-9), Jeff Landry (LA-3), Dan Benishek (MI-1), Tim Walberg (MI-7), Michelle Bachmann (MN-6), Vicky Hartzler (MO-4), Renee Ellmers (NC-2), Frank Guinta (NH-1), Joe Heck (NV-3), Michael Grimm (NY-13), Steven Chabot (OH-1), Bill Johnson (OH-6), Steve Stivers (OH-15), Jim Renacci (OH-16), Tim Scott (SC-1), Jeff Duncan (SC-3), Trey Gowdy (SC-4), Mick Mulvaney (SC-5), Scott DesJarlais (TN-4), Bill Flores (TX-17), H. Morgan Griffith (VA-9), Sean Duffy (WI-7), Reid Ribble (WI-8), David McKinley (WV-1)

That’s thirty-one out of forty voting for the bill (77.5%), eight voting against, and one no-vote. Despite the eight nay votes, Tea Party-backed candidates overwhelmingly supported an extension of the PATRIOT Act.

Note that the list include the “beloved” Alan West and Michelle Bachmanm.

There is no proof or evidence that gay marriage negatively impacts anything. And in the states where it is legal, NOTHING has happened to hetero marriage. This is just criminal Republican BS.

The GOVERNMENT telling you what to do with your body; aka trying to overturn Roe V Wade by allowing States to circumvent Federal Law as well as Citizens United that they got their RW and Teal Party (Thomas) counterparts on the SCOTUS to hand to them.

Maybe there is a discrepancy in what you think the teabaggers are.

Just maybe the republicans hijacked the teaparty movement and turned it into what it is today.

Maybe the 2 party system is a total fraud that offers the illusion of choice, but actually provides only for a single agenda.

How poetic the Republicans who gave us the original Patriot Act have just organized their Constitution reading brethren into a valiant force for more of the same Constitution busting legislation. Where is the power of Ron Paul to stop this. He must not be much of a leader if he couldn’t even hold his teaparty cohorts in line on this Constitution busting vote.

I sure hope so, last time his faithful sheeple contributed something like $6 million in one day. I hope they pour even more of their hard earned money down this same hole next time. More evidence that P.T. Barnum was onto something.

They voted for Obama because they were sick and tried of the transfer of Power and wealth to the Global Monopolies, Mostly foreign corporations today.
People believed that Obama would be better than the criminals we had.
But it looks as if one of two things have taken place.
Obama was a Trojan Horse sent by the republicans and all we have heard from him and the White House is complete BS or There has been a coup of this government and no one can change the corporate policies they wish to push down our a…looks as if one of two things
The only d… way there will be a change in the concern and policies from the elected officials is the way that the Egyptian citizens have just shown us.
Why should they change their actions or policies they are creating historical profit , wealth and overwhelming power for these Global Empires and the elite.
You do not see any of them on the streets , losing their jobs , losing their homes or benefits and living in a third world environment conditions.

GOD BLESS DR . RON PAUL ALEX AND THE REST OF YOU ,YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE

  • Robert Shaftoe

Well, when it was just Ron Paul, yes, I agree, most of what you were about, I agreed with as a Progressive. But it got out past your movement. You let people like Sarah Palin take your movement and co-opt it.

Now, I’m not saying the Progressive movement is in any better of a situation, but, the ORIGINAL Tea Party people, the ones I see around campuses supporting Ron Paul and CALLING the War Criminals out on both sides of the aisle; aren’t the ones I’m referring to as Tea Baggers. Those are the Ron Paul ilk (not to be confused with the Rand Paul thugs who like to stand on other Americans’ heads).

Really though, how much of a movement AGAINST corruption were these folks against it? Well look at how your WHOLE movement has been co-opted. When I heard Sean Hannity call himself a “Libertarian” I knew it was all over for the real Libertarian movement.

I know Libertarianism well, I used to be one. Then I realized that collaborative things humans have always done, like building parks and highways and having a Post Office and police and fire departments; were things Libertarians (even their leadership) were calling “Socialist”.

But really, REAL Libertarians and Progressives/Liberals probably should come to realize how much common ground we have:

    - we all hate corruption
    - we all hate the Patriot Act
    - we want the government/Corporatocracy out of our bedrooms
    - we want the Fed investigated
    - we want the wars to end
    - we want accountability from our goverment at all levels
    - End the War On (some) Drugs

But will we tackle the issues like Corporate Personhood? Are Libertarians so far down the river that they can’t see where the Citizens’ United SOTA decision will be the ruin of our society?

I mean, if Ayn Rand was flexible enough with her beliefs to collect Social Security (while railing against this same sort of system, and others collecting it); one can only hope that Libertarians and Progressives will finally really work together to over-throw the bastards.

Agreed. As I said elsewhere in this thread, the Ron Paul ilk doesn’t hold much more of a solution than his more numerous and less hypocritical brethren on the OTHER side of the aisle (like Kucinich and Sanders).

What sort of coalition has Ron Paul put together within his own party? Hell, his buddy Michelle Bachmann won’t give him the time of day now that they put Ms Crazy Eyes on TV every day.

Who does Ron Paul Caucus with in his own party? If he’s such a movement builder, where are the other members of Congress giving RON PAUL deference?

    (crickets)

Ron Paul had the ball and his Republican buddies took it from him and now they’re fighting over who gets to be quarterback,

I’m telling you, Ron Paul’s biggest problem is he kept that damned (R) next to his name.

  • Robert Shaftoe

Also, if the Tea Party is no longer what you want it to be, why are you part of it?

Why do you defend it if you feel what it is today has been ‘hi-jacked’?

What does the Tea Party have to do to get you to actually leave it?

What does the Tea Party REALLY have to do to garner your support, if you will already defend them as they are???

Obama shows that he serves Bush and Cheney and their masters by supporting this. I will never vote for him now. Now I think you may be trying to show a comparison between Barnum’s business ethics/rhetoric and Ron Paul receiving money from people who WANT him to campaign for a political office… Well that’s just a lousy statement to make as they are clearly not the same. Keep tryin Einstein

Sadly, the Progressives and Libertarians have no voice in Congress.
They have fake Progressive and fake Libertarian reps mouthing platitudes, and doing every single thing they can do to advance a corporatist agenda.
There may be a few independent cusses that manage to sneak in every once in a while, but they are schooled pretty quick on “the way things get done”.

  • Robert Shaftoe

Why didn’t he just run as a Libertarian. Screw the Dems and especially screw the Republicans.

This is why so many Progressives didn’t think Ron Paul was sincere, because he wouldn’t put enough daylight between him and the GOP. He really could have too, and he would have had way more cross-over votes too. But instead, he got PWNed by Sarah Palin who rides up front on the tea Party Express.

Ron Paul fans are learning the lesson many of us Obama voters are learning: it takes more than ONE person to change this country. You really need a movement and you need it to be big enough to over-come the corporate interests which are propping-up the corruption in our government.

Get BIG BUSINESS out of government, and you’ll have less reason to complain about a transparent government OF, BY, and FOR the PEOPLE.

Egypt gets this, why can’t we? It will be interesting to see what happens to Vodaphone in Egypt. Probably more than what happened to AT&T when they spied on Americans.

One lowly citizen would expect less. As the persons who inhabit the halls of democracy are devoid of soul and slavish in devotion to those who lavish funding upon the sycophant who is most eager to perform for the client. The brazen nature of all political circus, supported by private multi media multi-national propaganda organizations, now indicates that the oligarchs have crafted the well functioning plutocracy.

There is huge profit in the burgeoning security and defence private partnerships with government. The Congress has become that which the government once ridiculed as a blatant example of a failed state, the accompanying corruption and power serving itself. Here again, the State and the associated private partners continue to violate the protections of the Constitution, in the name of security, which serves only the elite and powerful and continues to suppress and deny the rights of the majority of citizens.

Obama has no honor. How could someone who behaved like a man of the people during his campaign and then align himself with fascist corporatists once in office have any honor? Constitutional scholar my ass! We should all be in the mall in Washington waving flags and threatening revolution until every member of Congress who votes for the police state is driven from office.

  • Anonymous

It’s hardly enough to say that people should protest only to repeal the Patriot Act; what about the DHS? Or what about the illegal CIA? Or what about every predatory corporation? Or what about billionaire mayors who raise costs and fees on the people? What about totally corrupt politicians and citizens? What about ridiculous wealth disparities? What about access to adequate health care? What about illegal wars or the gross enrichment of US generals and former politicians? What about corporations interfering with my voting rights? If corporations don’t vote, they don’t get to lobby my congress members. By the way, if you need a creed for the revolution it’s this: fairness, justice and freedom.

Mr. Shaftoe, with all due respect, the minute you start praising Ron Paul, I don’t understand how you are any different than any other white militia movement. The difference between anarchists and libertarians is that anarchists believe in a society without leaders while libertarians think there should be no government or society. Ron Paul is a libertarian who has no business in government because ultimately he does not believe in government if he did he could not be a libertarian.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure you can say that Ron Paul believes we all should be free. I bet he thinks that some are entitled to more freedom than others. How do I know? Well, if he’s a libertarian as people like to say he is, then I’d have to believe that he thinks that people should pretty much be left to their own devices, and thus, I imagine he thinks it’s okay if we implement this libertarian thingy on the people starting now, and if we did I wonder if he would first make sure that we all start off equal or do those who are already in possession of everything get to keep what they have so that the playing field won’t be exactly level. The point is that if you really believe in freedom for all, you have to make sure that those who come into this world have an equal opportunity as their predecessors. Therefore, it’s unequivocal that you must ensure that nothing is owned by those who are dead or let the dead transfer their wealth into the next generation. Otherwise, those who have everything would simply continue to rule as they do now–as slavemasters. Somehow, I bet Mr. Paul vociferously believes in property rights and does not believe in freedom but rather ownership.

  • Anonymous

Yes, and the time periods are comparable. Many like to say that Mubarak is the problem and he reigned for 30 years, which is a lot like how America has gone stagnant 30 years ago starting with Ronnie Raygun. The more astute viewer knows that the military has been running Egypt for about 50 years, which is a lot like in the US of A when the US went the way of the military in 1947 with the passage of the NSA. That was the seed which sprouted into the broken, failed state known as America.

Not voting could be the answer, particularly when it’s the establishment who seems to be the ones encouraging us to vote. I did not vote in 2010 and I will not vote. I think we should make our votes count by demanding to be paid for our vote, just as our congress persons do. I think we should make our politicians pay us (a lot) for our vote, especially when we all know that Citizens United supposedly authorizes corporations to buy elections. The demand for my vote is a living wage.

I guess you missed the part where Obama wants to have it extended for 3 years instead of 2.

    IDIOT…

  • Anonymous

It’s sort of like alarm bells were set off in my head when Obama warmly reflected on Ronnie Raygun during the campaign, but I was told not to worry. When I really gave up on the man was when I heard that Mullen, Petreaus and Gates were staying, which I think was announced on the day of the election or the morning after. Of course, when I found out that he essentially kept many Bush officials in place and Bush’s contemptible and illegal policies in place, I knew for sure that he was toast. I was one of those who shouted into the wind that we could not give Obama time because then it would be too late. I’m not happy to have been vindicated but I am happy that the Egyptian revolution has exposed how craven Obama is and the whole world is on notice that he is an abomination or pox upon us.

You guys are funny,,, The Patriot Act is never going to be shutdown without a major fight. Why
Because they have an 8 year 800 billion dollar head start in infrastructure. Private contractors like Lockheed, IBM, VErizon,AT&T, major security company’s like Pinkerton, and CACI, bureaucratic agency’s that receive huge budgets for building the Nation Wide Stasi , like DHS,FBI, that created the TSA and Infragard. You can not scan 10,000 cell phone calls per minute and 10000, emails per minute per county without a major investment in hardware. Thats how many calls and emails are scanned in Tampa Florida every day.All the major cities have this technology, and if you need warrants signed by judges to scan 20000 hits an hour , it aint ever gonna happen. So , the choice is here, shut it down completely , or we will become a communist country. And their in lies the rub, do the billion dollar unconstitutionally stasi company’s win, or we the people.
Follow the defense departments private security contracts for the spyocracy, county by county, state by state.
Thats why the Patriot Acts keeps passing, its worth 100s of billions of dollars, and that buys a lot of lobbying.
I expect our greedy whoring politicians to cave, and the executive to follow orders fro the global elite, but the Supreme court? And our corporately owned free press, have sold us out.

We are done, put a fork in us, short of a bloody revolution, and I think its coming.

Obama supported the Patriot Act even as a candidate for president, and he still does.

Companies that sell us security machines we don’t need love to lobby for this anti-democratic law. They cash in big time and the republican politicians are the ones really cashing in. That’s why they started the illegal mass murders in the middle east.

“”National Security Letters to search people’s personal records without a court-issued warrant.”" ~ That is what Mubarak did in Egypt and is a direct violation of the 4th amendment.

Those 4 tea party guys who flip flopped suck. They suck even more than the neo-cons who voted for it initially. I really had a little bit of hope that there would at least be public debate.

I’m done with the tea party, as a group they won’t create change and this really proved it for me.

No America has not suffered enough yet to realize they are NOT
    FREE, and certainly not Democratic!

I believe that there is going to be a financial crash that will force a revolution unless the Obama government gets off its ass and brings about changes and restores Democracy once again.

    America must change direction

    - End the Phony War on Terror
    - America do unto others as you would have done unto you!
    - remove the un democratic Patriot Act
    - restore the constitution
    - bring back balance between the wealthy and the poor
    - stop fighting and remove troops and weapons from Iraq and Afghanistan.
    - stop the war against Pakistan
    - bring the troops home from the hundreds of military bases around the world.
    - be a good citizen of the United Nations, and work to bring real peace to the world
    - work to eliminate all nuclear weapons from everyone
    - move quickly to an oil free energy program
    - bring in a single payer health program to cover ALL your citizens
    - put the environment at the top of the agenda
    - stop creating ever more weapons of war.
    - work with the world to bring population under control to allow for the all other species room to live, and survive.
    - eliminate Genetically Modified or engineered Food that is counter to nature, and is poisoning the worlds food supply
    - eliminate the FACTORY FARM and bring back local food production with natural pest control, natural food and humain animal care, and eliminate chemical pest control that is destroying the soil
    - ensure that all schools including the Universities teach morality, ethics, and integrity in order to graduate.
    - ensure that the environment is always taken into account
    - etc, etc. more caring legislation

This Patriot Act thing..pisses me off as much as escalating in Afghanistan and tax cuts for the wealthy….I don’t care what any body says I blame that Corporatist jerk presently residing in the White House…Obama is no better or worse than Bush was………..I am totally disgusted…think about what the last two administrations…(at LEAST, the last two) have done to the “people and the Constitutional rights of the people…. and you will hear the same complaints echoed in the people of Egypt…who just threw out their greedy, arrogant, plutocratic (Corporated) “Government officials”…..

The GD (Godly designed) Piece of Paper is more important then the Patriot Act, the Statue of Liberty or even the Aholes in the house. Tear the GD Piece of Paper Completely or Suspend it and the Red from our Stars and Stripes will flow onto the ground up to the Horse’s Bridle. And afterward Our great Constitution will still survive but her Enemies and their loved ones will all be gone with the wind, forever. Amen.

If the House renews the Predators Act I think we might see more of what just happened in Egypt. People, it is time to bring these predatory oligarchs to heel, the world has become too small for the elite few to feed on the blood of the masses.

On second thought, it’s time to pink slip 90% of our elected personnel, they are not doing the jobs they were hired to do, and when they actually do any work it’s so far below performance expectations any other employer would have fired them on the spot.

Merely teaching a course makes you a Conswtitutional scholar????? What learned papers has he written. Has he argued before the US Supreme Court? You libs are really a joke. How many people who are not even full-time faculty are teaching Costitutional Law? They are all scholars?

Once again, it’s YOU’RE an idiot. Not “your”. Every time you exhibit your lack of basic English skills, you, and by implication Ron Paul supporters in general lose any credibility they might otherwise deserve.

On second thought, even if you were to learn the difference between “you’re” and “your”, you STILL wouldn’t know when to use commas or when to use periods, would you? Punctuation is a TOTAL MYSTERY to you, isn’t it?

And finally, “PEOPLE LIKE YOU”?? Such a infantile, boorish phrase only confirms what I’ve long suspected:

    You’re an idiot.

I agree completely, I always say, all these monkey games are nothing but creating new business, never anything else. There’s no global agenda, no strategy. Show me one US politician whose strategy and state thinking ever involved anything but his own campaign. Meanwhile, the economy needs constant dope, constant artificial injections, so they come up with Y2K, then it ends, they need to come up with the next big hit. Global warming was supposed to be one, but didn’t fly. Now security has become a big success, indeed shower of billion dollar budgets and such. It’s as obvious as it’s pointless, because behind all this eavesdropping there’s absolutely no big plan, and it’s nothing but another excuse to steal tax money. TSA has not caught a single terrorist ever, but continues to grow. JTTF’s do nothing else but create “cells” from the thin air. That’s the way economy is developing in this country in this decade, and you can’t just go and kill your economy in one decree.

Sure I did, look at Ron Paul, I figured at least a few of the tea party
folks would be libertarian like him.

Put simply, the Founders wouldn’t even recognize our government as the type they created. Sadly, I could argue that this has been true for nearly one hundred years now.

  • Anonymous

Well, if you look at the Patriot Act and its passage history in 2001, 2005, and 2010, you’ll find that 95 percent of both parties have, at one time or another, supported it.

That ought to tell you something. I think it’s time for the State legislatures to propose an Amendment to the Constitution to impose term limits on Congress. God knows the Congress won’t impose it on themselves.

I am forced to agree with GavinInTucson, but it is not too late to do better -

I propose that we should support a movement to BOYCOTT the next Presidential election.

As was amply demonstrated by the last election when Obama deceived us all with his phony talk of change, there really is no choice in US elections anyway, its either stooge of rich masters R or stooge of rich masters D. By boycatting the election, the these traitors to the American people will see that their deception has not convinced the majority of us, and they are playing a dangerous game. It will also deprive them of being able to claim a popular mandate for their “election”

P.S. I too am apalled by the 60′s/70′s generation that started out special then sold out, but even more so by what mental and moral deficients the children of that generation in large part seem to be.

Support a movement to boycott the next presidential election.

The U.S. government colluded in the murder of over 3000 of its own citizens on 9/11 and is now using the Patriot Act to protect itself from the repercussions.

    Proof?
Just watch the collapse of WTC Tower II. The top 20 or so floors of the building tilted at a 25 degree angle but did not fall to the side. This would ordinarily be physically impossible, but these floors above the plane strike instantly disintegrated in mid-air as soon as they began to tilt. Why?
The one and a half hours that elapsed between when the WTC attack and the Pentagon attack proves government involvement. Do they expect us to believe that the most powerful military in the world is unable to defend its own headquarters from an unarmed aircraft, given an hour and a half warning?
