WASHINGTON – US President Barack Obama said on Saturday he was determined to carry out budget cuts needed to improve America’s balance sheet, but insisted on making key investments in the country’s future.

The president unveils his spending blueprint on Monday, with White House officials saying it will freeze annual domestic spending for the next five years and help the United States reduce the budget deficit by more than $400 billion over the next decade.

“We’ve stripped down the budget by getting rid of waste,” Obama said in his weekly radio address.

“For example, we’re getting rid of thousands of government-owned buildings that sit empty because they aren’t needed,” the president explained.

“I’ve also proposed freezing salaries for hard-working government employees, because everyone has to do their part. And I’m going to make sure politics doesn’t add to our deficit, by vetoing any bill that contains earmarks.”

But Obama said his administration was determined to continue making what he called “job-creating investments” in roads, high-speed speed trains, and broadband Internet connections.

He also emphasized the need of creating new industries like clean energy and biotechnology, improving schools and making college more affordable.

“So, after a decade of rising deficits, this budget asks Washington to live within its means, while at the same time investing in our future,” the president stressed. “It cuts what we can’t afford to pay for what we cannot do without.”

The comments came after the US Treasury Department reported Thursday that the budget deficit in January was $49.8 billion, a 16.8 percent rise from a year earlier but less than had been expected.

The number was encouraging as analysts had forecast a figure in the range of $59.5 billion.

Nevertheless, expenditures grew 11.3 percent year-on-year in January, faster than receipts, which increased only 10.2 percent.

It was the 28th consecutive month that Washington spent more than it took in in taxes.

Overall, the US national debt has now reached $14 trillion with a $1.5 trillion yearly government deficit.

Paying 800,000 dollars for porno scanners in every airport is sacrosanct, but feeding the poor and keeping them warm can be gutted from the budget at the drop of a hat.

Obama sure has his priorities straight.

Should be worried about foreign spending before domestic spending. Should be cutting puppet dictators allowance before government workers. Would love to see this neolibral do something about the FED. Or live up too your promises to end war that could in itself bankrupt us. If not GTFO!

  • http://twitter.com/OMGWhatDidWeDo Trevinla

So, you wanna cut some fat from he budget huh??

How about cutting elected officials’ salaries to the median income of the USA… How about getting rid of elected officials’ GOLD PLATED pensions… At least until over 50% of the country is receiving a pension… Or maybe cutting the medical coverage to a simple checkups and physicals coverage until the whole country has access to the same benefits as the elected officials!

Where else in America does the employer have worse benefits than the employee…

And, get rid of subsidies to any company that pays their CEO more than double their lowest worker and/or has more than 5% gross profit…

And remove all tax deductions from any company that has less than three times as many workers in America as they do outside America… And/or make any company that sells anything in the US have an American subsidiary that pays taxes based ALL earnings made in America… Gross earnings!

War is waste in more ways than financially. THAT should be number one with Pentagon budget number two followed closely by pensions for out-of-office politicians third.

    WELL SAID, Trevinla!

Oh, are he and the worthless Dems and Republicans resigning!

If it’s not military cuts, it’s not waste, generally speaking. These traitors will cut everything we need as a people and continue supporting the things we don’t. I guarantee they won’t cut welfare to the oil companies, wall street and companies like koch and halliburton who turn around and slip a few billion in the political coffers that keep them rolling in fascism. They will cut funds needed to take care of those average people that got screwed by their wall street pyramid schemes with less and less sane rules. The conservative movement has proven to fail both economically and socially. It’s too bad there are millions of dumbed down Americans who don’t even realize it.

If “everybody” is doing their part, Obambi, you are going to have to RAISE TAXES ON YOUR BILLIONAIRE MASTERS. It’s that simple.

We see right through the rhetoric you and the GOP have espoused. We do. We see how you all keep calling for “sacrifices” and “cuts” and everything but raising taxes on billionaires and corporations. Even your idol Ronald Reagan had to raise taxes, in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987. Yes, he did. Yes you can.

    ON THE RICH. Do it.

You’ll feel liberated. Believe me. Your chances of reelection are slim as things are already, so be bold and push to turn the country around for the better. It even worked for the people you’re either emulating or worship: Eisenhower, Clinton, and of course, St. Ronnie.

And yet he signed on for the Bush tax cuts. Fools to the left of e, fools to the right of me.

Great, Obama! Stick with it, and as always, start here:

OMAMA says: “I’ve also proposed freezing salaries for hard-working government employees, because everyone has to do their part.”

YEAH, everyone has to do their part: except the weathy who need their tax cuts so they can have more and more….

If this continues, we will be in the streets too: sooner than later.

I will never vote for him again bc of this.

That makes me real nervous. Since ending the tax cuts for the richest 2% would have been the best start to his cutting the budget. By extending the bush tax cuts he raised the taxes on the poor. Then he announced he wanted to cut funding to help low income people with their heating bills. We have already heard that he is open to extending the age of Social Security benefits. When Obama talks cutting the budget he is talking about taking money away from the people who need it the most. He doesn’t mention stopping the wars and cutting the military budget, but always dumping on the poor. I simply do not trust Obama anymore.

“and help the United States reduce the budget deficit by more than $400 billion over the next DECADE. (emphasis added)”

Senator Rand Paul has come up w/ a plan to reduce it by $500 Billion THIS fiscal year! Not 5 or 10 years from now (after we’re bankrupt) Look (Google) it up yourself.

If McCain had attempted even one-tenth of what Obama has already pushed through there would be protests from coast to coast. At the end of Bush’s term the public was near boiling point. Obama has managed to throw ice water on every progressive cause, most especially peace. He sure was the right man for the job.

Apparently all that’s needed to placate Americans is to switch the label and add a shiny new coat of paint. Perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising since politicians are just brands, and brand loyalty is cultivated from birth. Despite pretensions to the contrary, Democrats are really no smarter than Republicans. They both vote against their own self-interest while claiming the enemy tribe is being bamboozled. Democrats claim that the right is ruled by fear, yet all you have to do to cow the supposed left is hold up a scarecrow like Sarah Palin. They’ll vote D every time. Why SHOULD Obama cater to “progresives” when he has nothing to fear from them?

Personally I think voting is overrated anyway. As Alexander Berkman put it in the early 20th C, the United States has never been a democracy but is the vilest plutocracy on the face of the planet.

Now it’s devolved into a kleptocracy. “Austerity” is nothing less than the looting of the public for the benefit of the super-rich. I’m not sure there has ever been such a brazen, immoral ruling class in human history. At least during the middle ages and the robber baron era there was some sense of noblesse oblige and honor. They also had ignorance as an excuse.

Obama strikes me as a psychopath. Just like Dick and Rummy and W. He has dead eyes. Presumably he’s been groomed for a high position since his stint with the CIA (sorry, “consultant firm for multinational corporations”). Brzezinski, Kissinger were his mentors. Ronald Reagan is his hero. The man is a snake.

Is WAR SPENDING considered ‘waste’ Obama?

  • Mr. Neutron

“It cuts what we can’t afford to pay for what we cannot do without.”

Military bases in 140 out of 200 countries around the globe – do we really need to spend $100 billion every year to continue to occupy Germany, Japan and South Korea ? Do we really need to invade some little country every four years, and run “covert ops” all over the planet to keep a dying Empire staggering along ?

This whole “global Empire” thing has made a few thousand Americans obscenely rich, but it’s ruining the country for the rest of us. Why don’t we cut that waste now ? Why is cutting the military budget in half considered taboo ? Why isn’t that discussed on CNN ?

  • Anders Christensen

Great! So no the question is the definition of “waste”.

I’m sure that in the minds of the powers that pull the strings attached to Obama and the other puppets in the government, “waste” is every dollar that does *not* end up in their fat pockets. Every dollar that helps someone that isn’t already stinking rich. Every dollar that builds a better future. Every dollar that tries to wean the US off that oil addiction which makes the big companies fatter.

I’m sure that even after Bush (and Clinton and Reagan) there is still a lot of “waste” to be taken care of ….

  • Anonymous

The cut in waste should start at the top.
Obama , These Global Empires and the top 2 percent should be slashed starting today.

Why are we still taking these criminal actions and policies they are forcing down our throats to keep happening.

It is becoming worst each and every day.

I do not see the elected officials , the top two percent or the republicans taking a hit on anything.

In fact it just keeps getting better and better for them each and everyday.

What in the …. is the matter with us. We have turned over and laid down for them to beat to death.

Obama and the controlling democrats looks to have been cut from the same d… mold as Bush , Cheney and the republican are.

Mr. President, how about a 10% pay cut for everyone receiving a federal paycheck, including all members of Congress and their staff, your administration, federal employees, federal courts, federal banks, and the military with the exception of enlisted personnel. Let’s call it shared sacrifice at the Federal Level since Main Street has already been sacrificed.

  • Anonymous

10% to someone at the top, especially those who receive other moneys and “contributions” and who have connections to industry, means little. To a clerk, post office janitor, or the like, 10% is the difference between 50% lean ground beef with Coors and the really good stuff, the difference between staying home during a work furlough and visiting the in-laws across state. That sort of decision doesn’t even exist a few levels up.

Hey, you can’t be cutting the military, I mean all these guns need to be used, I mean they’re just there and we need to use them.

Oh, we’re running low on guns so can you plus up the defense budget so we can get some more guns….

  • Jaimie11

That is why taking care of the poor should not be left up to government. We can do that ourselves in our own communities if the money taken from us in taxes stayed in our own pockets to be given to charities we manage for the benefit of the poor and any other cause we wish to support.

Get the government and the rich charities out of our pockets. They do little for which they collect money and only serve as welfare for the rich who make enormous salaries and benefits running them.

Military spending is BY FAR the largest category of US spending.

Obama has INCREASED military spending even about the absurd levels of the Bush II regime.

I’m sure he wants to cut some federal spending, but he wants to give his chosen Corporations even more, borrow more from the banksters and rack up even more debt than the absurd levels we already have. Your great great grandkids will be unable to pay the interest on our “national security”.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/42THFKXIPMJHQBIH6OPI4RVIDY Thebes

Guns are a trivial part of military spending. Most of it goes to high tech purchases, some of them costing more than a large city’s school system for a single item.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KLF5SUA5RDYXG54WWF5SHMVRAI X

Listen, genius, you just spent the last two years explaining how your government stimulus plan would benefit the economy by providing disposable income to real people. Now that you’re going after the wages of government workers, there’s no logical argument left for people to use in support of your policies. Dumb as a board.

  • mjcc1987

Did you think before you posted this?

2,500.00 per month minus 10% is 250.00 per month less. Is that important to someone who makes 30K a year?

20,833 per month minus 10% is 2,083.00 per month less. Is that important to someone who makes 250K a year?

Which of the two would be considered critical to day to day living should that monthly salary be cut by 10%? Um….?

Is a mother of two or a family of 4 any less if they are government employees than say employees of Sam’s club?

  • mjcc1987

    Sigh…. you’re not even worth a response………..

  • Jaimie11

Sanity, I read his plan here – http://vote-socialist.org/p08/questionnaires/alexander.html
There is no mention of the money system. All of his intentions will be overrun by debt if the money system is not first addressed. In my opinion, he doesn’t stand a chance.

And furthermore there are a great many people in the US who are not interested in top down socialism. You understand, with top down socialism you still end up with a 2% class at the top.

  • Guest

I’m thinking more along the lines of the Democratic Socialism aspect (i.e. Bernie Sanders) which, I think, is more like from the “bottom up”. I’m sure you’ve seen Denny Crane’s Socialist post asking people to sign it and give up such things as a fire department, libraries, etc. if they “hate” Socialism. I posted the links because that is where this gentleman seems to be coming from: “People before Profits”.

He does mention a new banking system in link #2.

Crash2parties and mjcc1987 both make good points!

Let’s change this so that every Federal Paycheck OVER $100,000 gets a 20% pay cut on their Paycheck and all their “other” income gets taxed 20%. While we are at it how about State level Politicians “sharing the sacrifice” after all they are the ones that got us in this mess in the first place and now it is time to pay up.

I actually agree with Obama on this point.

He should get rid of the Congress, the Senate, the Supreme Court, the Executive and the Fourth Estate, thereby cutting these wasteful programs. Most especially, the Pentagon and the “black budget”, which now topples 50 billion dollars, should be swiftly eliminated. Then perhaps Americans can live in dignity and peace. And without the whole world minus Canada (or at least 1 quarter of the Canadian population) wanting to destroy “The Great Satan”.

    Seems like a reasonable proposal.

P.S. sorry, I didn’t realize Obama exempted “security” funds. Shit.

You deny that military is our nation’s largest expense?
You deny that our national debt is so outrageous what we’ll be paying interest on it for generations?
Or do you deny that Obama has increased military spending?

My point is taxes should be progressive and not a weapon as you seem to want to use it. Nothing will destroy this country and the very fabric that binds us as a nation than to target each other like this. I’m sorry you simply don’t seem to have the capacity to understand this.

I don’t like EVERYTHING socialized top down. Like I’ve said, you still end up with a 2% ruling class. I am looking for something that puts people in charge of their own lives directly, without the need for bureaucratic intervention.

Cut 400,000,000,000 from the “defense” budget right now and America would still spend more on “defense” than every other country on earth combined. Obama, Democrats, and Republicans are so full of s–t it is absurd. The only people who are more ridiculous are the Americans who don’t understand how insane this is.

  • Mr. Neutron

Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, China, Hungary, the former Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland – all produce hemp at least from the 1990′s. Even if the US laws prevent this versatile crop in the US, the resulting products can still be bought in the US:
