President Barack Obama should have known Egypt was going to have a revolution, according to the ranking member of the Armed Services committee.

Sen. John McCain told CBS’s Bob Schieffer Sunday that the Obama administration didn’t do enough to support democracy in Egypt as protesters in the country were calling for President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

“We should have seen this coming when the Egyptian government failed to move forward with a process of democratization,” McCain began. “The last election was particularly flawed.”

“So a lot of this should have been seen. This administration and the liberal left in America viewed Bush’s democracy efforts as a way or an excuse to go to war. When president Obama refused to support the people in the streets of Tehran when a young woman bled to death — named Neda — before it was a seen by the world and this administration did nothing. That sent a very bad signal to all of these dictatorships.”

“What should we have done?” Schieffer asked. “You’re not saying we should have gone to war.”

“No but we should have spoken up for them just as Ronald Reagan spoke up for the people behind the Iron Curtain, just as throughout our history we have had a fundamental belief and commitment that all of us are endowed with certain inalienable rights,” McCain replied.

“I think the president has handled this situation well,” he added, seemingly contradicting his earlier statements.

“I think that we need to get a transition that really understands that elections are not the answer. We’ve had election after election in places that have been meaningless. It is the apparatus. It is the modalities. It is the education of voters. It’s all of the things that go to a free and fair election.”

The senior senator from Arizona also said that while he had concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood filling the power vacuum in Egypt, the US should be careful to assist the Egyptian people instead of dictating to them.

And his comments are relevant because…?

Really, Obama missed the train on Egypt?

I suppose the whistler speaker would have, had he been elected, seen it all coming down the pike. If not him, then that phony-assed supposed governor who could see Russia from her front door would have seen it coming and then advised Mr. Has Been what was about to happen.

And where has this whistler speaker been the past 30 years during Mubarak’s dictatorship? I never once heard him make the demand for Democracy in Egypt.

    Why is that Mr. McCain?

  • Guest

Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda. How old is this getting?

The farggin’ CIA didn’t see it coming too, my friend, but after being slapped around for 8 years by Bush (you know what that feels like, don’t you John?) and acting like an abused child, is it any wonder the CIA and the administration missed it?

Why anyone would want the opinion from the person who picked Sarah Palin as there VP is beyond me.

This just prooves that the Republicans will say anything even if it makes no sense or is a flat out lie.Why do we care what Grampy Insane has to say anyway? I think he was demented before he was demented.

  • Red Raleigh

UPDATE: I completely screwed this up: Here’s what I meant to say:

The disdain felt by so many on the Left for Bush pales in comparison to the disrespect and contempt shown by Rightwingers & Republicans towards Obama.

Sorry about that. Yes, I’m still a pround member of the progressive far-Left.

    1) What makes you think he didn’t?
    2) What would it matter if he had done? It’s none of his business, it’s the Egyptian peoples and he has no right to interfere.

  • Anonymous

McCain wouldn’t have saw this coming if he were standing right in the middle of Tahrir Square.

  • Red Raleigh

Had McGrumpy been elected President he would probably would have bombed Egypt way before any of this happened, continuing the Bush policy of “invade first – ask questions later”.

  • Anonymous

The disdain we felt for Bush was based on real stuff he was pulling….

in Obama’s case, the wingers should love him, he’s one of theirs. (if they are paying attention anyway)

“Sen. John McCain told CBS’s Bob Schieffer Sunday that the Obama administration didn’t do enough to support democracy in Egypt”

Supporting Democracy and supporting Mubarak are two very different things, Grampy…

Fuck you, McShame, why didn’t you make a stink if you saw something no one else did?

  • Mein Furor

McCain has been making less and less sense ever since the Palin fiasco and he’s becoming less and less relevant. I’ll bet he’s disgusted knowing he’s the person responsible for bringing her into our national political discourse. Like anyone with half a brain, he should have seen that train wreck coming. And why didn’t we hear him bitching about the Bush administration’s failure to see 9/11 coming? And Katrina? And the recession? Etc, etc. He’s lost nearly all his credibility outside the Angry State of Arizona.

  • Phil E. Drifter

Because he lost the election in the biggest landslide since ’80 (Reagan vs. Mondale) and Palin is receiving 100x more coverage than he.

  • TheDevilCanDance

Hilarious, from the semi senile old clown who cannot find his own ass with both hands. Euthanasia….

McCain would have sent two battalions of Marines to quash the protesters.

  • Phil E. Drifter

    “wouldn’t have seen,” just fyi.

ps: i love the new format, Raw!

  • http://smugmug.com/other/anoceanapart Maheanuu

Red, pardon me but you are as full of shit as a 800lb robin….. President Obama has been catching shit from you Reich Wing bastards since he first came on the scene… Birth Certificate, Religion, Race, along with any pitiable excuse that can be dreamed up by you brain dead sons of bitches…

Your John McCain is a Reich Wing Toady, and Mafioso and a charlatan tramp… I would not want to wish him any bad luck, but if he were run over by a drunk while trying to pick up corn on the freeway with his nose, I personally would give the driver a meda..

  • Anonymous

Maybe Obama should have seen that coming like McCain claimed to know how to catch Bin Laden and was going to do so if elected president. “This administration and the liberal left in America viewed Bush’s democracy efforts as a way or an excuse to go to war. When president Obama refused to support the people in the streets of Tehran when a young woman bled to death — named Neda — before it was a seen by the world and this administration did nothing. That sent a very bad signal to all of these dictatorships.” Didn’t McCain sing “Bomb bomb bomb…bomb bomb bomb Iran….like he really cares if a million Nedas die.

  • Anonymous

Remind me, what did McCain say in support of Egyptian democracy before all this started happening? I trust he’s on the record somewhere telling Obama just what he should be doing to encourage support of the Egyptian people.

  • Red Raleigh

I agree. See my correction. Partied too much last night.

  • Anonymous

McCain is a real geo-political genius … for instance, only HE has kept up on the situation on the non-existent Iraq-Pakistan border.

  • DesertSun59

The CIA should have known first, Mr. McCain. Plus, what is he concerned about anyway. Egypt is shedding it’s dictator. That should be a good thing. But apparently McCain is unaware of that fact.

  • Anonymous

well, did mccain see it coming and alert obama? dur… mccain’s been on those psych-drugs for PTSD for 40 years…

  • Anonymous

The Bush Administration and the Republican-appointed Federal Reserve Chairman should have seen the housing fiasco and banking collapse coming and should have taken action to prevent it. The warning signs were pretty clear for years in advance. Had they done so, everyone would still have a job and the government would not be running such big deficits.

  • Anonymous

I’m still waiting for McCain to start acting like an American Patriot and tell Obama where bin Laden is and how to get him. If McCain outs bin Laden like he said he could during the campaign, then perhaps he can start advising Obama on other foreign policy initiatives and hot spots around the world.

But since McCain doesn’t seem to have been out front on the Egyptian revolution, why should he expect anyone else to know what he doesn’t. After all he is the one who claimed during the campaign to have some kind of crystal ball.

But I really like this comment:

“I think that we need to get a transition that really understands that elections are not the answer. We’ve had election after election in places that have been meaningless. It is the apparatus. It is the modalities. It is the education of voters. It’s all of the things that go to a free and fair election.”

My first response is a snarky is McCain talking about Egypt or America? Could be either, couldn’t it?

But on a more serious note, I have ot ask what he means by not having elections. Isn’t that what all this revolution stuff was about–having an election. Is McCain afraid that a hand-picked American stooge can’t win an open and fair election in Egypt? That seems to be about the gist of it, I guess!

  • Greg Eckhart

Last week he was calling ‘democracy spreading in the ME’ as a virus?

Why the change of heart for a guy that attempted to try to pull off a ‘October Surprise’ by having his foreign adviser and lobbyist for the Georgian government, Randy Scheunemann, on the ground while Saakashvili attacked sleeping citizens.
Nobody seem to see that one coming, except McCain who was all prepared with campaign talking notes fresh from 1983.
Dumb fascist rich kid with nothing to offer the world except his except his MIC rubber stamp and ignorant bile.

Exactly, As if he was supposed to make an announcement that a revolution was coming? Additionally, we were probably somewhat covertly involved as well (in support of the Egyptian people). In fact, THAT is how you do it. Not bombing people into submission.

The Clinton Admin had a plan to overthrow Saddam with an internal coup in the 1990′s. It involved keeping the Sunni in power (keeping Iran in check), but putting in a leader more friendly to the US and to the Iraqi people (an actual human being). The Republicans voted it down. They wanted a war. They finally got their way in 2002. It did not turn out well…..

The truth is that McCain wanted Mubarak to remain in power. But now that he is out, he is playing the Republican blame game. No matter what Obama did…..it was wrong.

  • Anonymous

Yes. McCain doesn’t even know if HE is coming or going……..

I love how no one in the GOP is on the same page. Obama shoulda done more, he shoulda done less, he shoulda coddled Mubarak, he shouldn’t have cut aid ( I thought they wanted to cut foreign aid from the budget?). There obviously is no blueprint on how it should have been handled. The whole thing moved very quickly and to keep comparing it to situations that it is not, like the Berlin Wall, is just ignorant. Completely different circumstances and nuances. It’s amazing how far back the Repubs gotta go back to reference their last foreign policy victory. Reagan’s ‘tear down this wall’ speech was 1987.

  • Anonymous

shame that McSame couldn’t have predicted what a “boat-anchor” Palin was for his ticket in 2008.

  • Anonymous

He has become senile and is invoking the ghost of Ronald Reagan, ignoring that RR only spouted demogogic platitudes. Nobody knew what was going to happen in Egypt. No one knows what the future will bring. Well, we do know we’re going to run out of oil and other resources but let’s ignore that for sure.

McCain clueless about Facebook didn’t know the people connected for their demands and it is not the US President’s business to run or tell another country what to do. Yes Bush dictated to Iraq and removed Saddam for personal gain of the countries resources and it had nothing to do with the welfare of the people. Change and inspirational words heard around the World and yes Facebook to get the word out. Time had passed for Hose and it’s passed for McCain too. Senility and venality on parade.

The real question here is why Schieffer wastes his time with John Insane instead of the many better-qualified people he could have had on his show.

  • Obi-jonKenobi

I recall that it was John Insane that stood up and spoke loudly in support of Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia and for the U.S. to push back hard against the Russians in that little dustup a few years back. Even I could figure out that Saakashvili had screwed the pooch when he bombarded the capital of South Ossetia. Yes, the Russians took full advantage of his stupid move but it was clear then to me and clear to the world later after investigations proved this to be the case and Saakashvili to be the aggressor. Yet, it wasn’t clear to Clueless John (and most the NeoCONS) who were all about getting all pushy and bad-assed against the Russians. Now dimwit Schieffer puts him on as an “expert”? Wow.

And, of course, if you look closely at the situation in Georgia, Saakashvili had been armed and encouraged by the Bushanistas (containment of Russia) and I’m sure that made him think he had the power to mess with the Russians by killing their troops in South Ossetia and thus inviting them to strike.

Which rights are those again? I thought he was working on trying to fix the economy which you were probably bitching about him not doing a couple weeks ago.

This coming from the guy that picked Palin as his running mate. LOL

Actually no, Obama should have seen McCain coming.

Grampy “seemingly contradicted his earlier statement.” So, everything is normal?

If you watch the video, at the 2:33 mark, the Old Coot from Arizona craps himself and doesn’t realize it. Then he starts yelling at Schieffer to “Get off my lawn.” Only he doesn’t remember WHICH lawn. Then he pisses himself for the third time today and enjoys the warm feeling and thinks he’s flying one of the jet planes he crashed in the Viet Nam war. He just doesn’t remember WHICH jet.

Clock is ticking, Grampy. Sleep well tonight.

McCain should be the last person to talk about missing something …

  • LeftCoastLeftie

What else do you expect from a guy who didn’t see Charles Keating coming? Didja Gramps? You thought those cash payoffs were for doing a good job? So you could buy more makeup for your c*nt wife? Hey, he said it, not me. He’d tell her again except he doesn’t remember which of his (hers, actually) houses she lives in.

As frustrated and disgusted as I have been with the President’s handling of certain issues and his capitulations to the GOP on others, the fact remains that with each new public utterance by John McCain, I am reminded anew why this angry, bitter old man was unfit for the office he seems to believe was his birthright. My disappointments with the current President have been, in some respects, quite profound, but if I had a chance to recast my vote, it would nevertheless still be for Obama (assuming, of course, the same set of choices as we faced in 2008).

John McCain should not have breathed life into the nightmare that is Sarah Palin..
He has thus lost any credibility that would have justified his criticism of Obama being able to see things in advance (counter to the repeated Republican whine “nobody could have seen that coming”).

1st, why should he have seen it coming and what should he have done about it? Egypt has been in revolt in various forms for years. Why should he have seen it coming McLaim? Is Egypt a US state to you? Could you be any less interesting or relevant?

  • Anonymous

And he should have seen that coming.

Obama’s bad because he weighs as much as a Muslim. Thanks for the chuckle this morning.

Coming – probably hasn’t gotten it up for years; after all, look at Cindy.
Going – Has a good healthy bowel movement every day at 7am; unfortunately, he doesn’t get out of bed until 7:30.

John McCain is the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

It is in fact HIS job to be on top of these things.

HE is the one who failed to anticipate this crisis and report it to his president.

I’m trying to figure this one out. If McCain is so clairvoyant, why didn’t he see the SAM that blew him out of the sky over Hanoi back in 1967? Or even better, why did he pick that pinhead to be his running mate in 2008? Oh yeah that’s right, HINDSIGHT IS 20/20!

I guess it just seems cool to say that someone you disagree with was wrong, even when you weren’t right either. What small modicum of respect that I had for McCain is now really gone.

Love this quote, ‘”No but we should have spoken up for them just as Ronald Reagan spoke up for the people behind the Iron Curtain, just as throughout our history we have had a fundamental belief and commitment that all of us are endowed with certain inalienable rights,’ McCain replied.” Ah yes, and if Obama pushed the issue, and the situation blew up in his face, McCain would have said, “It was a rookie mistake…” and that the President “was too impetuous and mishandled the situation.” Talk about your no win scenario.

The one none of the so called leaders see coming, is the one they don’t even believe can happen, there are literally none of the congressmen or senators who I would spare, or their dirty families . . or grandchildren, but that is just me and my personal opinion. they hate us. . .

John McCain dredges up policies of a 85 year old man who was suffering from dementia, as is McCain, and tries to apply them to now. His time has past, he needs to be put to rest, before he starts selling guns and munitions to the taliban

  • samhoustonTX

John should have seen Charles Keating coming, but he didn’t.

I didn’t know that but it makes perfect sense to me. He’s disgusting!

Not only is John McCain craven but he’s just so out of touch. Everyone predicted this. If Mr. McCain was paying attention he would have seen the prediction that 2011 was going to be the year of the youth. Now, admittedly, I did not read the article because that did not strike me as item of interest (I admit now I was wrong), but my simple point is that someone was aware of a youth rebellion, and someone who was in touch with the people would have been aware of the anti-globalization ferment, the dreary future of our nation going bankrupt due to illegal wars, rising and vast economic inequities and all sorts of other mind-numbing greed and corruption to make anyone sentient aware that something was afoot. It comforts me to know that Mr. McCain is so disingenuous as to accuse Obama of not being aware when he seems not to have been aware himself–there are also reports that the CIA was allegedly once again also not aware–but that this man is responsible for affairs of state should be an insult to every living creature. I’m glad I also got the chance to add that I wonder if McCain is saying that neither nor Obama still didn’t see it coming even after Tunisia? If that is the case, then even I was aware after Tunisia that things were really brewing so it’s hard work to respond to a McCain comment because they either nonsense or half-truths.

Great job, nyupstater. I really liked the part about stating the obvious: Obama is one of them. That’s the funniest part (well, it’s not really funny but what am I supposed to do–cry?).

  • Anonymous

Good point. It is particularly rich coming from Senator “The-Fundamentals-of-our-economy-remain-sound” McCain.

  • Anonymous

O.K. McCain, what would you have done?I know, send a carrier task force over to bomb Cairo, and then an invasion force to subjugate the Egyptian populace. That is exactly how you and your ilk would have responded!!

  • Anonymous

We should invite the Egyptians over to our DEMOCRACY????and let them show us how it is done!!

Oh but he did and he WELCOMED the campaign contributions AND his visits to his congressional office to dee if Johnny boy could get the Feds to back off. I think that is why the House Repremanded the “Maverick”

This ignorant, senile fuck is also the same person who got up on stage and sang “Bomb Iran” during his election campaign. If he had been elected president you know he would have launched missiles at both Iran and Egypt the moment the uprisings began.

Now we’re supposed to believe that he cares about the people of Tehran? Or that he even knows who Neda is? There’s no way you can convince me somebody didn’t write that line for him. John McCain has no idea what’s going on in the Middle-East or anywhere else.

How many Neda’s does he think we slaughtered without mercy in Iraq? Didn’t he say we should occupy that country for 1,000 years? While stating over and over that we should bomb Iran as well. Do you really believe he gives a fuck about the people in Egypt? I’m sorry, but words really do matter. I hate you fucking reporters who print this right-wing propaganda that you hope we will believe. Fuck all you corporate media whores! This has got to stop! It has become completely unacceptable. You are just liars for the system and you’re just as bad as the neocon war criminals who say this shit.
