Lens flare in Egypt video inspires Fox to go full-blown ‘apocalypse’

Democracy is coming to Egypt. To Fox News, this might as well be the apocalypse.

Joking aside, the “apocalypse” is actually, literally what one Fox News website was fretting over recently, asking whether a video of protesters in Egypt unmasked an ethereal harbinger of mankind’s demise.

As a point of reference, lens flare can happen in different ways depending on the type of lighting and camera equipment, but many times it will surface as a series of spots or circles, or an extension or mirroring of a light source in another part of an image or video.

It is not an exotic or rare effect by any means, and can be manipulated by skilled photographers for their own artistic ends. But on Fox Nation yesterday, what was easily explained as lens flare in a video shot amid the Cairo protests became fodder for a sign of the “apocalypse” — which seems to sync up with the network’s overall narrative of late.

Their headline was like something out of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show: “Horseman of Apocalypse Shows up in Cairo?”

“This is an incredible piece of video,” a post with no byline reads. “At the 1:20 mark you clearly see some greenish figure moving through the crowd.

“Between the crowds of protesters and barricades, the video shows a flowing, pale green image that resembles an erect rider atop a horse in Medieval-like barding. The ethereal figure remains for a few moments before floating over protesters’ heads and off the screen.”

Instead of showing a “flowing, pale green image that resembels an erect rider atop a horse,” the video shows a green lens flare bouncing off a burning pile of debris. It moves the same as other light blips on the footage, and floats off as the cameraman moves the lens.

The video apparently came to them by way of Fox and Friends stand-in anchor Clayton Morris.

The same Fox News editorial site mistakenly published a satirical Onion “news” story last November and endured a merciless ribbing on the Internet for their mistake. The editors scrubbed the post and deleted all user comments — many of whom appeared to be replying as if it were a real story.

Commenters on the Fox Nation “apocalypse” post weren’t so easily fooled, but it was impossible to say if the majority were Fox readers or send-overs from social media powerhouse Reddit.com, which promoted the link early Monday.

The Fox News Channel’s various conservative media personalities have been promoting a conspiratorial view of the protests that have gripped the Middle East in recent months, with some hosts alleging that a global Muslim empire has begun to emerge from the unrest, indicating that the West should be fearful of pro-democracy movements.

There was no evidence of any such thing transpiring.

A recent University of Maryland study found that regular Fox News viewers were more likely to believe a number of pervasive falsehoods about the state of American politics and world affairs.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, an unnamed former Fox News employee recently told liberal blog Media Matters that “stuff is just made up” by the network’s employees — a list of individuals that now includes a majority of the leading candidates vying for the Republican Party’s 2012 presidential nomination.

This video is from Euronews, published to YouTube on Feb. 3, 2011.

It’s about the right time for the horsemen to show up. Ronald Wilson Reagan (aka 666, “the beast”) would have just turned 100 (if he could have just remembered to stay alive). Nostradamus probably just “forgot” about Alzheimers, I guess.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hell was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
    — Revelation 6:7-8˄ NIV
The fourth and final horseman is named Death. Of all the riders, he is the only one to whom the text itself explicitly gives a name. Still others apply the names “Pestilence”[9] or “Plague” to this horseman, based on alternative translations of the Bible (such as the Jerusalem Bible). Unlike the other three, he is not described carrying a weapon/object, instead he is followed by Hades. However, illustrations—like those above—commonly depict him carrying a scythe (like the Grim Reaper) or a sword.
The color of Death’s horse is written as khlôros (χλωρóς) in the original Koine Greek, which is often translated as “pale”, though “ashen”, “pale green” and “yellowish green”[8] are other possible interpretations. The color suggests the sickly pallor of a corpse.[4][10] Other translations hypothesize a reference not yet to “greenish”, but “mottled” or spotted.
The verse beginning “they were given power over a fourth of the earth” may refer solely to Death and Hades, or it may summarize the roles of all four horsemen; scholars disagree on this point.

Pretty awesome effect! I’d go so far as to say on par with what Hollywood may have come up with if they wanted to create a ghost apocalypse horseman running through this shot.

But as good as it looks, simpler explanations take precedence.

  • Anonymous

Let’s not be so hasty in criticizing Fox. There’s got to be a rational explanation for this. They probably polled their viewers and determined the majority are apocolyptic thinkers and would enjoy a premonition of the horseman.

They are, after all, in the entertainment industry.

Speaking of Fox and just watching what I could stand of Glenn Beck and his Caliphate Conspiracy, couldn’t make me help but think what would have happened if a major news network would have continually put forth the Loose Change conspiracy theory after 9/11. Would that have even been allowed? How can Fox get away with these stories of total speculation? Why was no one constantly harping on the Bush/bin Laden connection? Why was no one continually harping on Bush rushing the Saudi’s under suspicion out of the country when no one else could fly? There were way more “true” dots to connect than the crap Beck it broadcasting. Unbelievable how they can get away with it. Can’t someone sue them or is this all part of the “plan”?

  • http://twitter.com/TDHunt Trent Hunt

While I am not convinced in total of the validity of the story I will do further research on the Fox web site and all media outlets to get it correct. Of your assertions, what you are doing yourself is laying out a statement of fact without one single item to back up your statement. At this point in time do not get angry and please fight the urge to attempt to insult me by sending a snarky reply. Just prove your point by stating an instance with evidence to back up what you are stating. Please just do not take something that you read or something that someone say and use that as your thesis statement. Plus just so you know I read to numerous to count publications and watch every news show to get all the facts from all sides. Please avoid name calling, if we as human beings can rise above name calling and restart a healthy dialog more topics of intellectual difference would be solved.

Apocalypse-loving Republicans are at it again.

Driving downtown awhile ago, I saw a van parked on the side of a busy street with signs spouting that the end of the world will be on May 21, 2011 (some Family group with a website listed). Question: why do right-wingers WORSHIP DEATH? Of course they do. Whether it’s the Rapture Republicans or the Fox “Big Lie” Republicans led by the crazed Roger Ailes, they all WORSHIP DEATH in one form or another. Or should I restate this that they worship the death of others in one form or another, not themselves, even though their beliefs and policies ALWAYS end up dealing death often to those close to them. So what will happen on May 21st? Nothing. May 22nd will follow, like the sun rising in the east, another day, another fraudulent end-of-the-world target date passed, with the right-wing death fantasy unfulfilled…with the crazy right-wingers rolling out another “rock solid” end-of-the-world date afterward, like has happened countless times before. Of course, it all the die-hard Rapturists were serious about ending “their world” on May 21st, then they would pull a Rev. Jim Jones on that date…and “their world” would end, but only for themselves, leaving all the rest of us out of their insanity. But I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, even the nutty Rapturists, because invariably (like at the People’s Temple, like at the Branch Davidian Waco compound), a whole lot of innocent children end up paying the price for the insanity of some religious fundamentalist adults.

    Hey FAUX NEWS, take heed:

    Democracy—Leonard Cohen

It’s coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
    It’s coming from the feel
    that this ain’t exactly real,
or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there.
    From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
    It’s coming through a crack in the wall;
    on a visionary flood of alcohol;
    from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don’t pretend to understand at all.
    It’s coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
    heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It’s coming from the sorrow in the street,
    the holy places where the races meet;
    from the homicidal bitchin’
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
    From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
    and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

    Sail on, sail on
    O mighty Ship of State!
    To the Shores of Need
    Past the Reefs of Greed
    [. From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/l/leonard-cohen-lyrics/democracy-lyrics.html .]
    Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

    It’s coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It’s here they got the range
    and the machinery for change
and it’s here they got the spiritual thirst.
    It’s here the family’s broken
and it’s here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
    in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It’s coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we’ll be making love again.
We’ll be going down so deep
    the river’s going to weep,
and the mountain’s going to shout Amen!
It’s coming like the tidal flood
    beneath the lunar sway,
    imperial, mysterious,
    in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

    Sail on, sail on …

I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can’t stand the scene.
And I’m neither left or right
    I’m just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I’m stubborn as those garbage bags
    that Time cannot decay,
I’m junk but I’m still holding up
    this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

In the history of mankind there seems to be no other source that has so successfully polluted and distorted so much intellect at one time. And this is why other nations laugh and mock Americans?!?!? I can understand why.

Ah, but real court fools are historically the wisest of men and consultants to the power-that-be. Truly. I am wracking my brain to think of where they DO fit in….even clowns and comediennes are at their best when they understand human frailty. Gosh, What CAN be done with them? Short of ending them to Mars. The Russians have just completed their trip (simulated) to the moon and are now turning back toward earth. Combine that with some interested private space travel agency and they could probably be baffooned into going to Mars to escape the Rapture.

No, they never read the Bible, just heard it from a sermon in a local church; they don’t read ancient Greek, Latin, or Hebrew, therefore have no understanding of the word “agape” — the word used by Christ in the Bible more than any other word… by a landslide. They just cling to the lines like: “gotta take care of your own first” and “killing is okay in the name of national defense (ask King David they say)”. And they definitely don’t understand Revelations, so anytime something “scary” happens it’s just easier to stick their head in the sand and wait.

This is actually a shrewd strategy by the Reich — errr, Right — which discovered in 1980, to its delight, that it could tap into the vast pool of stupidity, racism and superstition in which most Americans dog-paddle through life. The result has been one huge election victory after another, with only a few brief setbacks. With countless radio and TV channels and Fox News itself pumping non-stop religious nonsense to the masses 24/7, America can only go one way — down and to the right. Look out the window. It’s happening now.

Unfortunately, when the Rapture does come, according to Christian mythology, not all Christians are going.

The “green horseman” is at 10:26 into the video. This is the “World’s eyes on Egypt” segment from Feb 2, 2010. Brian Williams and Richard Engel are talking on the right, live video from Tahrir Square is on the left.

Nobody from MSNBC mentions the “green horseman”.

There weren’t many cameramen from the West in Tahrir Square, so many outlets used that same video – but not everybody freaked out over the lens flare and started talking about pale horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Perhaps days later, Rachel talked about how other people, like at Fox, were seeing green horses in camera flares – she likes to find funny things in the media. But I couldn’t find this, if it exists.

“Between the crowds of protesters and barricades, the video shows a flowing, pale green image that resembles an erect rider…”

Has anyone from FOX yet identified whose erection that was?

I wonder why that 144k number didn’t increase as the population of the planet exploded… either god didn’t know there’d be over a billion xtians (and over a billion muslims who also hold the same kind of myths) and that there’d be less than 1/10 of 1% of his “creations” going… or the guys that fabricated the myths (more, the guys that perpetuate them) never adjusted their counts as modern society turned a planet’s worth of inhabitants into single cities.

Got a link to the cable that says someone will work to take down Mubarak this year? If the cable was released then we could all read it, that gives weight to the argument. If there is no cable, then it’s more delusional ranting from Beck. This would be a great time to either put up or shut up :)

I guess it is all about elitism. Everyone does it. (ie, The Jews are the Chosen people) My son goes to a Catholic school that is named after a Christian “holy” war.

144k/ 12 tribes of israel = 12,000 per tribe. The Jews are the sacred 144k and they aren’t going to be raptured, they will be safe from the devastation.

the 144k are the protected jews, not the ones who will be raptured.

Which still tells us that their tooth fairy is terrible at planning… at last count, there were over a million hard-core ultra-orthodox Jews alone — they’re going to be awfully disappointed when they realize that less than one-in-ten of them got anything out of all that fervent praying…

They still have to get through the Mayan Calendar’s Unversal Cleansing on December 21, 2012. That trumps Christians’ and Jewish ideas.

I thought everyone knew that the rapture occurred 1/1/2000. It was no big deal since only a handful of people around the world were called. They were all poor and in remote locations. It’s hard to find truly righteous people, maybe impossible now.

Can we persuade them to chase a comet?

The allure of the rapture is that it is their “get out of death free” card. They are all terrified of death since they know that by their own asserted standards they are all condemned to hell when they die. Rapture fantasy says they go to heaven without needing to die, thus skipping the judgment line.

Can’t somebody assemble a good video production crew, or, I don’t know, maybe a 13 year old with some rockin’ cgi skills, and create a few videos that would convince these people the end of the world already happened, they got left behind and THERE’S NO REASON REMAINING TO ACT ALL GLEN BECK CRAZY-LIKE every frikkin’ day of the week??

I wonder why Fox (Faux) would assume it was the Fourth Horseman? I would have thought the would have made it the Second Horseman: War. The problem is if you read Revelations, there is no Green Horseman. White, Red, Black, and Pale, but no Green

Any yes, I had to look them up in Wikipedia. Hey I may have studied New Testament in divinity school but I am Unitarian Universalist. Revelations is not big in our tradition.

  • http://johnharvey.us/ SgtCedar

I had to laugh when everyone predicted the world would end 1/1/2000. When I studied New Testament in divinity school my NT professor showed us how to prove (just from the clear evidence in Matthew and Luke) that Jesus could not have been born in the Year One. I do not remember the exact years since it was over 30 years ago but based on who is listed as being in all the Roman and Jewish offices in the gospels he could have only been born (I think) between the years 4 and 6 BCE.

In case you don’t know BCE (Before the Common Era) is the same thing as BC (Before Christ). Also before any Right Wingers question why I only mentioned Matthew and Luke those are the only two gospels that even mention Jesus’ birth. If the Romans were anything other than great engineers they were great record keepers.

I do video professionally. This flare is caused by a protective filter that is commonly placed on top of the lens glass. However, in highly contrasted imagery, it causes a mirrored reflection of bright areas as the light is refracted by the filter.

    Fox News. Overreactive moronic fearmongers.

First I’ll preface this with the fact that I am an Atheist. But if there were a rapture and a heaven; if most of the people that were going to be in heaven were the same closed minded Conservatives we have here then you can have your heaven. But I know that can’t be true because in heaven those same closed minded Christian neocons couldn’t hate or spread hate. They would have to love all. Even those that did not agree with them. I know I know. Christians think you must be Christian in order to be a good descent patriot. Growing up I learned at a young age to rely on science and not fables to explain things. Even if it was something that I didn’t want to hear or challenged my preconceived beliefs. I had faith in what was tangible. Not just blind faith. Since then I served in the Air Force, saw combat in Bosnia and Operation Desert Storm, and have been a firefighter/EMT for the last 15yrs. I have on nearly a daily basis put my life on the line to defend, protect , or help others. All while being an Atheist. Imagine that. You do not have to be religious to be a good person or do whats right. Prisons are full of Christians and religious people. We should be judged as individuals not what “club” we belong to. Fox is always reporting FEAR! Fear and 24/7 demonization of the Dem’s and the Left. When was the last time Fox reported anything negative when it comes to a Republican or someone on the Right? Anybody?… When was the last time a Fox News programs DIDN’T report negatively about a Dem or the Left? I rest my case…

I did several albums for a particular 7th Day Adventist Church. I worked with their pastor for hundreds of hours and he knew that I thought everything he believed to be 100% ridiculous – he knew this because I flat out told him so. I asked him once why he continued working with me as he very well knew that I was an Atheist. His reply shocked me: “Church is for the believers but you do business with the pagans – they wont flake out or try to rip you off. Most of us think this way.” In time, we became friends and he had me over to his house on many occasions but his family never once bothered to try to “convert” me as they preferred the company of people that did not live in a fantasy world.

Finally, I love to ask people to give me a short list of Atheists that have started wars? Anyone?

  • Nickelthrower

I was raised Roman Catholic and went to a Catholic school – only the “bad” kids read Revelations. There is way too much evil going on and no patron saints or holidays in Revelations so we didn’t bother with it much.
